ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marcus Byrne - Entomologist
Marcus Byrne is fascinated by the way insects, particularly the intrepid dung beetle, have hardwired solutions to the challenges posed by their environments. Could they help humans solve problems?

Why you should listen

Marcus Byrne is professor of zoology and entomology at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa. His research explores what humans can learn from insects. One of the big questions he's focused on: how can we control alien weeds, which threaten biodiversity? Byrne believes that insects may hold the 'magic bullet' for how to restrain the growth of these plants, which jockey for resources with native flora and fauna.

Byrne's work has also focused on the unique mechnics of the dung beetle. His research has shown that the dung beetle has a highly effective visual navigation system, that allows them to roll balls of animal dung with precision back to their home, even in the dark of night and the hottest of conditions. Byrne wonders: can this beetle teach humans how to solve complex visual problems?

04:06
So clearlyبوضوح this animalحيوان knowsيعرف where it's going
73

and it knowsيعرف where it wants to go,
74

04:11
and that's a very, very importantمهم thing,
75
235675
1885
04:13
because if you think about it, you're at the dungروث pileكومة,
76
237560
2415
04:15

78

04:23
So we gaveأعطى them some more tasksمهام to dealصفقة with,
79

04:27

04:41
So this animalحيوان has actuallyفعلا had the wholeكامل worldالعالمية

04:46
But it doesn't flinchجفل. It knowsيعرف exactlyبالضبط where it wants to go,

85
273402

04:52
So our nextالتالى questionسؤال then was,

04:54
how are they doing this?
87
278562

05:16
is to look at the skyسماء, and so we thought,
95
300859
4219
05:20
now what could they be looking at in the skyسماء?
96
305078

05:23
And the obviousواضح thing to look at is the sunشمس.
97
307342
4109
05:27
So a classicكلاسيكي experimentتجربة here,

05:42
It does a little doubleمزدوج danceرقص,

05:49
What happensيحدث now? So clearlyبوضوح they're looking at the sunشمس.
107
333952

05:53
The sunشمس is a very importantمهم cueجديلة in the skyسماء for them.
108
337679
3262
05:56
The thing is the sunشمس is not always availableمتاح to you,

09:29

And then what we did was we filmedصور them with a thermalحراري cameraالة تصوير.
180
558540

09:37
So what you're looking at here is a heatالحرارة imageصورة
181
562007
4416
09:42
of the systemالنظام, and what you can see here emergingالمستجدة
182
566423
3921
09:46
from the pooبراز is a coolبارد dungروث ballكرة.
183
570344
3609
09:49
So the truthحقيقة is, if you look at the temperatureدرجة الحرارة over here,
184
573953
3279
09:53
dungروث is coolبارد. (Laughterضحك)
185
577232

09:58
So all we're interestedيستفد in here is comparingمقارنة the temperatureدرجة الحرارة
186
582212
3218

of the beetleخنفساء againstضد the backgroundخلفية.
187
585430
2640
10:03
So the backgroundخلفية here is around about 50 degreesدرجات centigradeدرجة مئوية.
188
588070
3944
10:07
The beetleخنفساء itselfبحد ذاتها and the ballكرة are probablyالمحتمل around about
189
592014
2608
10:12
so this is a great bigكبير ballكرة of iceجليد creamكريم
191

10:18
It isn't climbingالتسلق. It isn't dancingرقص, because
193
602486
2703
10:21
its bodyالجسم temperatureدرجة الحرارة is actuallyفعلا relativelyنسبيا lowمنخفض.

10:23
It's about the sameنفسه as yoursخاصة بك and mineالخاص بي.
195
608030

10:27
And what's of interestفائدة here is that little brainدماغ is quiteالى حد كبير coolبارد.
196
611103
4964
10:31
But if we contrastتناقض now what happensيحدث in a hotالحار environmentبيئة,
197
616067
4307
10:36
look at the temperatureدرجة الحرارة of the soilتربة.
198
620374
2150
10:38
It's up around 55 to 60 degreesدرجات centigradeدرجة مئوية.
199
622524
3450
10:41
Watch how oftenغالبا the beetleخنفساء dancesالرقصات.
200
625974
3442
10:45
And look at its frontأمامي legsالساقين. They're roaringlyroaringly hotالحار.
201
629416
4542
10:49
So the ballكرة leavesاوراق اشجار a little thermalحراري shadowظل,
202
633958
2923
10:52
and the beetleخنفساء climbsيتسلق on topأعلى of the ballكرة
203
636881
1934
10:54

204
638815

10:59
we think, and avoidتجنب the hotالحار sandرمل that it's walkingالمشي acrossعبر.
205
643454
5670
11:05
And what we did then was put little bootsالأحذية on these legsالساقين,
206
649124
3932
11:08
because this was a way to testاختبار if the legsالساقين
207
653056
2962
11:11
were involvedمتورط in sensingالاستشعار the temperatureدرجة الحرارة of the soilتربة.
208
656018
3758
11:15
And if you look over here, with bootsالأحذية they climbتسلق ontoعلى the ballكرة
209
659776
3977
11:19
farبعيدا lessأقل oftenغالبا when they had no bootsالأحذية on.
210
663753

11:23
So we describedوصف these as coolبارد bootsالأحذية.
211
667944
2327
11:26
It was a dentalالأسنان compoundمركب that we used to make these bootsالأحذية.
212
670271
2922
11:29
And we alsoأيضا cooledتبريد down the dungروث ballكرة, so we were ableقادر
213
673193

11:31
to put the ballكرة in the fridgeثلاجة, gaveأعطى them a niceلطيف coolبارد dungروث ballكرة,
214

11:35
and they climbedارتفع ontoعلى that ballكرة farبعيدا lessأقل oftenغالبا
215
679729

11:38
