ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ruth Chang - Philosopher
Ruth Chang asks why some choices are so hard — and what that means for the human condition.

Why you should listen

When Ruth Chang graduated from college, she was presented with a choice: Should she pursue a career in philosophy, or a career in law? Soon after finishing Harvard Law School and dipping her toe in the legal world, she regretted her decision and switched paths. She went off to Oxford University to study philosophy and has been a philosopher studying choice, freedom, value and action ever since.

Chang's research focuses on decision-making and the human condition: How do we exercise our freedom through the choices we make? She studies the relationship between reason and value, and how we navigate the sea of pros and cons as we make decisions that shape our lives.

Think of a hard choice you'll face in the near future.

00:16
It might be between two careers --
1

1842
00:18
artist and accountant --
2

00:20
or places to live -- the city or the country --

00:23
or even between two people to marry --
4

00:25
you could marry Betty or you could marry Lolita.

00:28
Or it might be a choice about
whether to have children,
6

2715
00:31
to have an ailing parent move in with you,
7
19287
2472
00:33
to raise your child in a religion
8

00:42
Chances are, the hard choice you thought of
12
30097
2463
00:44
was something big, something momentous,
13
32560
2060
00:46
something that matters to you.

00:48
Hard choices seem to be occasions

00:51
for agonizing, hand-wringing,
16
38812
2402
00:53
the gnashing of teeth.

2461
00:55
But I think we've misunderstood hard choices
18
43675
2209
00:58
and the role they play in our lives.

01:08
the alternatives relate.
24

1849
01:10
In any easy choice,

one alternative is better than the other.

01:15
In a hard choice,
27
62816
1471
01:16
one alternative is better in some ways,
28
64287
2097
01:18
the other alternative is better in other ways,
29
66384
2796
01:21
and neither is better than the other overall.
30
69180
3067
01:24
You agonize over whether to stay
31
72247
2754
01:27
in your current job in the city
32
75001

01:28
or uproot your life for
33

01:31
more challenging work in the country
34
78905
2033
01:33
because staying is better in some ways,
35
80938
2766
01:35
moving is better in others,
36
83704
1386
01:37
and neither is better than the other overall.
37
85090
3968
01:41
We shouldn't think that all hard choices are big.
38
89058
3802
01:45
Let's say you're deciding what to have for breakfast.
39
92860
2413
01:47
You could have high fiber bran cereal
40
95273
2597
01:50
or a chocolate donut.
41
97870
2040
01:52
Suppose what matters in the choice
42
99910
1371
01:53
is tastiness and healthfulness.
43
101281
3047
01:56
The cereal is better for you,
44
104328
2296
01:58
the donut tastes way better,
45
106624
1994
02:00
but neither is better than the other overall,
46
108618
2447
02:03
a hard choice.
47
111065
2168
02:05
Realizing that small choices
48
113233
2046
02:07
can also be hard
49
115279
2093
02:09
may make big hard choices seem less intractable.
50
117372
4027
02:13
After all, we manage to figure
out what to have for breakfast,
51
121399
2801
02:16
so maybe we can figure out
52
124200
1480
02:17
whether to stay in the city
53
125680
1619
02:19
or uproot for the new job in the country.
54
127299
4060
02:23
We also shouldn't think that hard choices are hard
55
131359
4801
02:28
because we are stupid.
56
136160
2532
02:30
When I graduated from college,
57
138692
1794
02:32
I couldn't decide between two careers,
58
140486
1871
02:34
philosophy and law.
59
142357
1570
02:36
I really loved philosophy.
60
143927
3478
02:39
There are amazing things you can learn
61
147405
1629
02:41
as a philosopher,
62
149034
1255
02:42
and all from the comfort of an armchair.
63
150289
3288
02:45
But I came from a modest immigrant family
64
153577
3431
02:49
where my idea of luxury
65
157008
1138
02:50
was having a pork tongue and jelly sandwich
66
158146
2844
02:53
in my school lunchbox,
67
160990
2110
02:55
so the thought of spending my whole life
68
163100
2239
02:57
sitting around in armchairs just thinking,
69
165339
3390
03:00
well, that struck me as the height
of extravagance and frivolity.
70
168729
4148
03:05
So I got out my yellow pad,
71
172877
2250
03:07
I drew a line down the middle,
72
175127
1907
03:09
and I tried my best to think of the reasons
73
177034
1993
03:11
for and against each alternative.
74
179027
3964
03:15
I remember thinking to myself,
75
182991
2244
03:17
if only I knew what my life
76
185235
3087
03:20
in each career would be like.
77
188322
1810
03:22
If only God or Netflix would send me a DVD
78
190132
3745
03:26
of my two possible future careers, I'd be set.
79
193877
3255
03:29
I'd compare them side by side,
80
197132
2214
03:31
I'd see that one was better,
81
199346
1795
03:33
and the choice would be easy.
82
201141
2562
03:35
But I got no DVD,
83
203703
2023
03:37
and because I couldn't figure out which was better,
84
205726
2677
03:40
I did what many of us do in hard choices:
85
208403
2817
03:43
I took the safest option.
86
211220
2878
03:46
Fear of being an unemployed philosopher
87
214098
3017
03:49
led me to become a lawyer,
88
217115
2567
03:51
and as I discovered,
89
219682
1905
03:53
lawyering didn't quite fit.
90
221587
1689
03:55
It wasn't who I was.
91
223276
2264
03:57
So now I'm a philosopher,
92
225540
1805
03:59
and I study hard choices,
93
227345
1709
04:01
and I can tell you that fear of the unknown,
94
229054
3462
04:04
while a common motivational default
95
232516
2890
04:07
in dealing with hard choices,
96
235406
2484
04:10
rests on a misconception of them.
97
237890
2313
04:12
It's a mistake to think that in hard choices,
98
240203
2797
04:15
one alternative really is better than the other,
99
243000
3225
04:18
but we're too stupid to know which,
100
246225
1828
04:20
and since we don't know which, we might as well
101
248053
1707
04:21
take the least risky option.
102
249760
2704
04:24
Even taking two alternatives side by side
103
252464
2743
04:27
with full information, a choice can still be hard.
104
255207
4685
04:32
Hard choices are hard
105
259892
2151
04:34
not because of us or our ignorance;
106
262043
2136
не праз нас або нашую дурноту;
04:36
they're hard because there is no best option.
107
264179
4323
04:40
Now, if there's no best option,
108
268502
2154
04:42
if the scales don't tip in favor of one alternative
109
270656
3919
04:46
over another,
110
274575
1245
04:48
then surely the alternatives must be equally good.
111
275820
3977
04:51
So maybe the right thing to say in hard choices
112
279797
1854
04:53
is that they're between equally good options.
113
281651
3119
04:56
But that can't be right.
114
284770
1185
04:58
If alternatives are equally good,
115
285955
1608
04:59
you should just flip a coin between them,
116
287563
2335
05:02
and it seems a mistake to think,
117
289898
1726
05:03
here's how you should decide between careers,
118
291624
2923
05:06
places to live, people to marry: Flip a coin.
119
294547
3960
05:10
There's another reason for thinking
120
298507
1800
05:12
that hard choices aren't choices
121
300307
2300
05:14
between equally good options.
122
302607
3333
05:18
Suppose you have a choice between two jobs:
123
305940
3280
05:21
you could be an investment banker
124
309220
3207
05:24
or a graphic artist.
125
312427
2518
05:27
There are a variety of things
that matter in such a choice,
126
314945
2946
05:30
like the excitement of the work,
127
317891
2199
05:32
achieving financial security,
128
320090
2286
05:34
having time to raise a family, and so on.
129
322376
2374
05:36
Maybe the artist's career puts you
130
324750
2795
05:39
on the cutting edge of new forms
131
327545
2438
05:42
of pictorial expression.
132
329983
1740
05:43
Maybe the banking career
133
331723
1749
05:45
puts you on the cutting edge
134
333472
1398
05:47
of new forms of financial manipulation.
135
334870
4367
05:51
Imagine the two jobs however you like
136
339237
3079
05:54
so that neither is better than the other.
137
342316
2973
05:57
Now suppose we improve one of them a bit.
138
345289
3092
06:00
Suppose the bank, wooing you,
139
348381
2494
06:03
adds 500 dollars a month to your salary.
140
350875
3389
06:06
Does the extra money now make the banking job
141
354264
3772
06:10
better than the artist one?
142
358036
2592
06:12
Not necessarily.
143
360628
2202
06:15
A higher salary makes the banking job
144
362830
2168
06:17
better than it was before,
145
364998
1965
06:19
but it might not be enough to make
146
366963
2177
06:21
being a banker better than being an artist.
147
369140
3971
06:25
But if an improvement in one of the jobs
148
373111
2654
06:27
doesn't make it better than the other,
149
375765
1809
06:29
then the two original jobs
150
377574
1172
06:30
could not have been equally good.
151
378746
2799
06:33
If you start with two things that are equally good,
152
381545
1982
06:35
and you improve one of them,
153
383527
1858
06:37
it now must be better than the other.
154
385385
2895
06:40
That's not the case with options in hard choices.
155
388280
4622
06:45
So now we've got a puzzle.
156
392902
2718
06:47
We've got two jobs.
157
395620
1676
06:49
Neither is better than the other,
158
397296
1960
06:51
nor are they equally good.
159
399256
2022
06:53
So how are we supposed to choose?
160
401278
2306
06:55
Something seems to have gone wrong here.
161
403584
4635
07:00
Maybe the choice itself is problematic
162
408219
2471
07:02
and comparison is impossible.
163
410690
3270
07:06
But that can't be right.
164
413960
1560
07:07
It's not like we're trying to choose between
165
415520
1808
07:09
two things that can't be compared.
166
417328
2379
07:11
We're weighing the merits of two jobs, after all,
167
419707
3131
07:15
not the merits of the number nine
168
422838
1780
07:16
and a plate of fried eggs.
169
424618
3181
07:19
A comparison of the overall merits of two jobs
170
427799
3291
07:23
is something we can make,
171
431090
2004
07:25
and one we often do make.
172
433094
3962
07:29
I think the puzzle arises
173
437056
2205
07:31
because of an unreflective assumption
174
439261
2319
07:33
we make about value.
175
441580
2320
07:36
We unwittingly assume that values
176
443900
3056
07:39
like justice, beauty, kindness,
177
446956
2555
07:41
are akin to scientific quantities,
178
449511
3114
07:44
like length, mass and weight.
179
452625
4380
07:49
Take any comparative question not involving value,
180
457005
2920
07:52
such as which of two suitcases is heavier.
181
459925
3664
07:55
There are only three possibilities.
182
463589
2685
07:58
The weight of one is greater, lesser
183
466274
3124
08:01
or equal to the weight of the other.
184
469398
2896
08:04
Properties like weight can be represented
185
472294
2292
08:06
by real numbers -- one, two, three and so on --
186
474586
2875
08:09
and there are only three possible comparisons
187
477461
3067
08:12
between any two real numbers.
188
480528
2543
08:15
One number is greater, lesser,
189
483071
2393
08:17
or equal to the other.
190
485464
2735
08:20
Not so with values.
191
488199
2787
08:23
As post-Enlightenment creatures,
192
490986
2305
08:25
we tend to assume
193
493291
1843
08:27
that scientific thinking holds the key
194
495134
2454
08:29
to everything of importance in our world,
195
497588
3252
08:33
but the world of value
196
500840
1457
08:34
is different from the world of science.
197
502297
2077
08:36
The stuff of the one world
198
504374
1714
08:38
can be quantified by real numbers.
199
506088
1852
08:40
The stuff of the other world can't.
200
507940
3433
08:43
We shouldn't assume
201
511373
1451
08:45
that the world of is, of lengths and weights,
202
512824
2633
08:47
has the same structure as the world of ought,
203
515457
3028
08:50
of what we should do.
204
518485
2051
08:52
So if what matters to us --
205
520536
2314
08:55
a child's delight, the love
you have for your partner —
206
522850
3408
08:58
can't be represented by real numbers,
207
526258
2741
09:01
then there's no reason to believe
208
528999
2005
09:03
that in choice, there are only three possibilities --
209
531004
3498
09:06
that one alternative is better, worse or equal
210
534502
3625
09:10
to the other.
211
538127
1980
другой.
09:12
We need to introduce a new, fourth relation
212
540107
4073
09:16
beyond being better, worse or equal,
213
544180
3651
09:20
that describes what's going on in hard choices.
214
547831
3713
09:23
I like to say that the alternatives are
215
551544
2158
09:25
"on a par."
216
553702
1449
09:27
When alternatives are on a par,
217
555151
1600
09:28
it may matter very much which you choose,
218
556751
3175
09:32
but one alternative isn't better than the other.
219
559926
3293
09:35
Rather, the alternatives are in
220
563219
2162
09:37
the same neighborhood of value,
221
565381
2278
09:39
in the same league of value,
222
567659
1999
09:41
while at the same time being very different
223
569658
2525
09:44
in kind of value.
224
572183
1778
09:46
That's why the choice is hard.
225
573961
3478
09:49
Understanding hard choices in this way
226
577439
2362
09:52
uncovers something about ourselves we didn't know.
227
579801
4050
09:56
Each of us has the power
228
583851
2354
09:58
to create reasons.
229
586205
3538
10:01
Imagine a world in which every choice you face
230
589743
3207
10:05
is an easy choice,
231
592950
1690
10:06
that is, there's always a best alternative.
232
594640
2392
10:09
If there's a best alternative,
233
597032
1748
10:10
then that's the one you should choose,
234
598780
1442
10:12
because part of being rational
235
600222
2010
10:14
is doing the better thing rather than the worse thing,
236
602232
2590
10:17
choosing what you have most reason to choose.
237
604822
3216
10:20
In such a world,
238
608038
2062
10:22
we'd have most reason
239
610100
2366
10:24
to wear black socks instead of pink socks,
240
612466
2480
10:27
to eat cereal instead of donuts,
241
614946
1915
10:29
to live in the city rather than the country,
242
616861
1605
10:30
to marry Betty instead of Lolita.
243
618466
2202
10:32
A world full of only easy choices
244
620668
3118
10:35
would enslave us to reasons.
245
623786
3894
10:39
When you think about it,
246
627680
2567
10:42
it's nuts to believe
247
630247
2600
10:45
that the reasons given to you
248
632847
3097
10:48
dictated that you had most reason to pursue
249
635944
4989
10:53
the exact hobbies you do,
250
640933
2758
10:55
to live in the exact house you do,
251
643691
2279
10:58
to work at the exact job you do.
252
645970
3236
11:01
Instead, you faced alternatives
253
649206
2528
11:03
that were on a par — hard choices —
254
651734
3415
11:07
and you made reasons for yourself
255
655149
2771
11:10
to choose that hobby, that house and that job.
256
657920
4622
11:14
When alternatives are on a par,
257
662542
2541
11:17
the reasons given to us, the ones
258
665083
1730
11:19
that determine whether we're making a mistake,
259
666813
2768
11:21
are silent as to what to do.
260
669581
3060
11:24
It's here, in the space of hard choices,
261
672641
3363
11:28
that we get to exercise
262
676004
2481
11:30
our normative power,
263
678485
2679
11:33
the power to create reasons for yourself,
264
681164
2451
11:35
to make yourself
265
683615
1769
11:37
into the kind of person
266
685384
2646
11:40
for whom country living
267
688030
2233
11:42
is preferable to the urban life.
268
690263
2733
11:45
When we choose between
269
692996
1738
11:46
options that are on a par,
270
694734
1699
11:48
we can do something really rather remarkable.
271
696433
3773
11:52
We can put our very selves behind an option.
272
700206
3723
11:56
Here's where I stand.
273
703929
2817
11:58
Here's who I am. I am for banking.
274
706746
3386
12:02
I am for chocolate donuts.
275
710132
3636
12:05
This response in hard choices
276
713768
2543
12:08
is a rational response,
277
716311
2088
12:10
but it's not dictated by reasons given to us.
278
718399
2918
12:13
Rather, it's supported by reasons created by us.
279
721317
6448
12:19
When we create reasons for ourselves
280
727765
2405
12:22
to become this kind of person rather than that,
281
730170
3314
12:25
we wholeheartedly become the people that we are.
282
733484
3733
12:29
You might say that we become the authors
283
737217
2456
12:31
of our own lives.
284
739673
3086
12:34
So when we face hard choices,
285
742759
2452
12:37
we shouldn't beat our head against a wall
286
745211
2222
12:39
trying to figure out which alternative is better.
287
747433
2497
12:42
There is no best alternative.
288
749930
2439
12:44
Instead of looking for reasons out there,
289
752369
2519
12:47
we should be looking for reasons in here:
290
754888
2586
12:49
Who am I to be?
291
757474
2679
12:52
You might decide to be a pink sock-wearing,
292
760153
3156
12:55
cereal-loving, country-living banker,
293
763309
3688
12:59
and I might decide to be a black sock-wearing,
294
766997
3576
13:02
urban, donut-loving artist.
295
770573
3457
13:06
What we do in hard choices is very much
296
774030
2807
13:09
up to each of us.
297
776837
3983
13:13
Now, people who don't exercise their
normative powers in hard choices
298
780820
4651
13:17
are drifters.
299
785471
1615
13:19
We all know people like that.
300
787086
2082
13:21
I drifted into being a lawyer.
301
789168
2150
13:23
I didn't put my agency behind lawyering.
302
791318
2091
13:25
I wasn't for lawyering.
303
793409
2680
13:28
Drifters allow the world
304
796089
2931
13:31
to write the story of their lives.
305
799020
2224
13:33
They let mechanisms of reward and punishment --
306
801244
3903
13:37
pats on the head, fear, the easiness of an option —
307
805147
3840
13:41
to determine what they do.
308
808987
2671
13:43
So the lesson of hard choices:
309
811658
2476
13:46
reflect on what you can put your agency behind,
310
814134
4475
13:50
on what you can be for,
311
818609
2390
13:53
and through hard choices,
312
820999
2770
13:55
become that person.
313
823769
2777
13:58
Far from being sources of agony and dread,
314
826546
3178
14:01
hard choices are precious opportunities
315
829724
3570
14:05
for us to celebrate what is special
316
833294
1931
14:07
about the human condition,
317
835225
1833
14:09
that the reasons that govern our choices
318
837058
2630
14:11
as correct or incorrect
319
839688
1983
14:13
sometimes run out,
320
841671
1662
14:15
and it is here, in the space of hard choices,
321
843333
3223
14:18
that we have the power
322
846556
1689
14:20
to create reasons for ourselves
323
848245
2512
14:22
to become the distinctive people that we are.
324
850757
3578
14:26
And that's why hard choices are not a curse
325
854335
2620
14:29
but a godsend.
326
856955
1650
14:30
Thank you.
327
858605
2671
14:33
