ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Matthieu Ricard - Monk, author, photographer
Sometimes called the "happiest man in the world," Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk, author and photographer.

Why you should listen

After training in biochemistry at the Institute Pasteur, Matthieu Ricard left science behind to move to the Himalayas and become a Buddhist monk -- and to pursue happiness, both at a basic human level and as a subject of inquiry. Achieving happiness, he has come to believe, requires the same kind of effort and mind training that any other serious pursuit involves.

His deep and scientifically tinged reflections on happiness and Buddhism have turned into several books, including The Quantum and the Lotus: A Journey to the Frontiers Where Science and Buddhism Meet. At the same time, he also makes sensitive and jaw-droppingly gorgeous photographs of his beloved Tibet and the spiritual hermitage where he lives and works on humanitarian projects.

His latest book on happiness is Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill; his latest book of photographs is Tibet: An Inner Journey.

But then, if you look in the literatureliteratura, EastEst and WestOest,

03:26
Some people say happinessfelicitat is right now;
48
194000
3000
03:29
it's the qualityqualitat of the freshnessfrescor of the presentpresent momentmoment.
49
197000
4000
és l'originalitat del moment present.
03:33
And that led to HenriHenri BergsonBergson, the FrenchFrancès philosopherfilòsof, to say,
50
201000
4000
03:37
"All the great thinkerspensadors of humanityhumanitat have left happinessfelicitat in the vaguevague
51
205000
4000
"Tots els grans pensadors de la humanitat han deixat la felicitat en un lloc indeterminat

52
209000

de manera que la podien definir... Cadascun d'ells la podia definir amb les seves pròpies paraules".
03:46
Well, that would be fine if it was just a secondarysecundari preoccupationpreocupació in life.
53
214000
5000
03:52
But now, if it is something that is going to determinedeterminar
54
220000
3000

03:58
then we better know what it is, have some clearermés clara ideaidea.
56
226000
5000
seria millor que sabèssim què és. Tenir-ne una idea més clara.
04:03
And probablyProbablement, the factfet that we don't know that is why, so oftensovint,
57
231000
5000
04:08
althoughencara que we seekbuscar happinessfelicitat, it seemssembla we turngirar our back to it.
58

04:16
And that can alsotambé come from some kindamable of confusionsconfusions.

I això també pot ser a causa d'algunes confusions.
04:20
One of the mostla majoria commoncomú onesuns is happinessfelicitat and pleasureplaer.
61

04:24
But, if you look at the characteristicscaracterístiques of those two,

05:32
Now, what, then, will be happinessfelicitat?
79
320000
3000
Per tant, que seria la felicitat?
05:35
And happinessfelicitat, of coursecurs, is suchtal a vaguevague wordparaula, so let's say well-beingbenestar.
80
323000
5000
05:42
And so, I think the bestmillor definitiondefinició, accordingsegons to the BuddhistBudista viewveure,

82
334000

05:53
It is a deepprofund sensesentit of serenityserenitat and fulfillmentcompliment,

For you, that mightpotser be surprisingsorprenent.
86

A vosaltres, això us pot semblar sorprenent.
06:15
Can we have this kindamable of well-beingbenestar while beingser sadtrist? In a way, why not?
87
363000
6000
06:21
Because we are speakingparlant of a differentdiferent levelnivell.
88
369000
3000
Doncs perquè estem parlant d'un nivell diferent.
06:27
Look at the wavesonades comingarribant here to shoreriba.

06:39
So you go from elationelació to depressiondepressió -- there's no depthprofunditat.
93
387000
3000
06:44
Now, if you look at the highalt seamar, there mightpotser be beautifulbonic, calmcalma oceanoceà, like a mirrormirall.
94

06:50
There mightpotser be stormstempestes, but the depthprofunditat of the oceanoceà is still there, unchangedsense canvis.
95
398000
7000
06:58
So now, how is that?
96
406000
2000
I això com pot ser?
07:00
It can only be a stateestat of beingser, not just a fleetingfugaç emotionemoció, sensationsensació.
97
408000
5000
07:05
Even joyalegria -- that can be the springprimavera of happinessfelicitat.
98
413000
4000
07:09
But there's alsotambé wickedperversos joyalegria, you can rejoicealegrar-se in someone'salgú sufferingpatiment.
99
417000
4000
07:13
So how do we proceedprocedir in our questrecerca for happinessfelicitat? Very oftensovint, we look outsidefora.
100
421000
8000
07:21
We think that if we could gatherreunir this and that, all the conditionscondicions,
101
429000
5000
Pensem que si poguèssim reunir això i allò, totes les condicions,
07:26
something that we say, "Everything to be happyfeliç --

07:32
That very sentencesentència alreadyja revealsrevela the doomdestrucció of destructiondestrucció of happinessfelicitat.
104
440000
4000
07:36
To have everything. If we misssenyoreta something, it collapsess'ensorra.
105
444000
5000
Tenir-ho tot. Si ens falta alguna cosa, no funciona.
07:41
And alsotambé, when things go wrongmal, we try to fixcorregir the outsidefora so much,
106

4000

107

07:54
So now, look at innerinterior conditionscondicions. Aren'tNo són they strongermés fort?

Doncs ara mirem a les condicions internes. No són més fortes?

i, fins i tot així, ser completament infeliços.
08:16
The DalaiDalai LamaRenaixement de Lama was onceun cop in PortugalPortugal,

08:19
and there was a lot of constructionconstrucció going on everywherea tot arreu.
114
487000
2000
i estaven construint molt per tot arreu.
08:21
So one eveningtarda, he said, "Look, you are doing all these things,
115
489000
3000
08:24
but isn't it niceagradable, alsotambé, to buildconstruir something withindins?"
116
492000
3000
08:27
And he said, "UnlessLlevat que that -- even you get high-techalta tecnologia flatpla
117
495000
5000

08:44
So now, at the oppositedavant,
121
512000
2000
I ara, tot el contrari,
08:46
we know a lot of people who, in very difficultdifícil circumstancescircumstàncies,
122
514000
4000
08:50
managegestionar to keep serenityserenitat, innerinterior strengthforça, innerinterior freedomllibertat, confidenceconfiança.
123
518000
6000
aconsegueixen mantenir-se serens, confiats amb força i llibertat interiors.
08:57
So now, if the innerinterior conditionscondicions are strongermés fort --
124
525000
2000
08:59
of coursecurs, the outerexterior conditionscondicions do influenceinfluència,
125
527000
3000
És clar que les condicions exteriors influencien,
09:02
and it's wonderfulmeravellós to liveen directe longermés llarg, healthiersaludable,
126
530000
4000
09:06

127
534000

tenir accés a la informació, l'educació, poder viatjar,
09:09
to have freedomllibertat. It's highlymolt desirabledesitjable.
128
537000
5000
tenir llibertat. És el que desitjem.
09:14
HoweverNo obstant això, this is not enoughsuficient. Those are just auxiliaryauxiliars, help conditionscondicions.
129
542000
6000
Tanmateix, això no és suficient. Només són condicions que ens ajuden.
09:20
The experienceexperiència that translateses tradueix everything is withindins the mindment.
130
548000
5000
09:25
So then, when we askpreguntar oneselfun mateix how to nurturenodrir the conditioncondició for happinessfelicitat,
131
553000
6000
09:31
the innerinterior conditionscondicions, and whichquin are those whichquin will undermineminar happinessfelicitat.
132
559000
5000
09:37
So then, this just needsnecessitats to have some experienceexperiència.
133
565000
3000
Llavors, només cal tenir una mica d'experiència.
09:40
We have to know from ourselvesnosaltres mateixos, there are certaincert statesestats of mindment
134
568000
3000
09:43
that are conduciveconducta to this flourishingflorint, to this well-beingbenestar,
135
571000
3000
que afavoreixen aquesta prosperitat, aquest benestar,
09:46
what the GreeksGrecs calledanomenat eudaimoniaeudaimonia, flourishingflorint.
136
574000
5000
el que els grecs anomenaven "eudaimonia", prosperitat.
09:51
There are some whichquin are adverseadverses to this well-beingbenestar.
137
579000
4000
09:56
And so, if we look from our ownpropi experienceexperiència,
138
584000
3000
10:08
they don't leavesortir us in suchtal a good stateestat after we have experiencedexperimentat it.
140
596000
5000
10:13
And alsotambé, they are detrimentalperjudicial to others'dels altres happinessfelicitat.
141
601000
3000
10:17
So we maypot considerconsidereu that the more those are invadingenvaint our mindment,
142
605000
4000
10:21
and, like a chaincadena reactionreacció, the more we feel miserablemiserable, we feel tormentedturmentat.
143
609000
5000
10:27
At the oppositedavant, everyonetothom knowssap deepprofund withindins that an actactuar of selflessdesinteressada generositygenerositat,

5000
10:38
we could saveguardar a child'sinfantil life, make someonealgú happyfeliç.
146
626000
4000
10:42
We don't need the recognitionreconeixement. We don't need any gratitudegratitud.
147
630000
3000
No en necessitem el reconeixement. No necessitem cap agraïment.
10:45
Just the meremera factfet of doing that fillsomple suchtal a sensesentit of adequationadequació with our deepprofund naturenaturalesa.
148
633000
8000
10:53
And we would like to be like that all the time.
149
641000
3000
I ens agradaria sentir-nos així sempre.
10:56
So is that possiblepossible, to changecanviar our way of beingser, to transformtransformar one'sun mindment?
150
644000
6000
11:02
Aren'tNo són those negativenegatiu emotionsemocions, or destructivedestructiva emotionsemocions,
151
650000
4000
11:06
inherentinherent to the naturenaturalesa of mindment?
152
654000
3000
11:09
Is changecanviar possiblepossible in our emotionsemocions, in our traitscaracterístiques, in our moodsEstats d'ànim?
153
657000
6000
11:15
For that we have to askpreguntar, what is naturenaturalesa of mindment?
154
663000
3000
11:18
And if we look from the experientialexperiencial pointpunt of viewveure,
155
666000
4000
11:22
there is a primaryprimària qualityqualitat of consciousnessconsciència
156
670000
3000
11:25
that's just the meremera factfet to be cognitivecognitiu, to be awareconscients.
157
673000
5000
11:30
ConsciousnessConsciència is like a mirrormirall that allowspermet all imagesimatges to risepujar on it.
158
678000
5000
11:35
You can have uglylleig facescares, beautifulbonic facescares in the mirrormirall.
159
683000
3000
Podeu veure cares lletjes o maques al mirall.
11:38
The mirrormirall allowspermet that, but the mirrormirall is not taintedcontaminada,
160
686000
4000
11:42
is not modifiedmodificat, is not alteredalterat by those imagesimatges.
161
690000
4000
11:46
LikewiseDe la mateixa manera, behinddarrere everycada singlesolter thought there is the barenu consciousnessconsciència, purepur awarenessconscienciació.
162
694000
8000
11:54
This is the naturenaturalesa. It cannotno pot be taintedcontaminada intrinsicallyintrínsecament with hatredodi or jealousygelosia because,
163
702000
6000
12:00
then, if it was always there -- like a dyetint that would permeateimpregnen the wholetot clothtela --
164
708000
5000
12:05
then it would be foundtrobat all the time, somewhereen algun lloc.
165
713000
3000
es podria trobar sempre, en algun lloc.
12:08
We know we're not always angryenutjat, always jealousgelós, always generousgenerós.
166
716000
5000
12:13
So, because the basicbàsic fabrictela of consciousnessconsciència
167
721000
3000
12:16
is this purepur cognitivecognitiu qualityqualitat that differentiatesdiferencia it from a stonepedra,
168
724000
4000
12:20
there is a possibilitypossibilitat for changecanviar because all emotionsemocions are fleetingfugaç.
169
728000
4000
12:24
That is the groundterra for mindment trainingentrenament.
170
732000
3000
12:27
MindMent trainingentrenament is basedbasat on the ideaidea that two oppositedavant mentalmentals factorsfactors
171
735000
5000
12:32
cannotno pot happenpassar at the samemateix time.
172
740000
2000
no poden succeïr alhora.
12:34
You could go from love to hateodi.
173
742000
2000
Podríeu anar de l'amor a l'odi.
12:36
But you cannotno pot, at the samemateix time, towardcap a the samemateix objectobjecte,
174
744000
3000
12:39
the samemateix personpersona, want to harmdanyar and want to do good.
175
747000
4000
12:43
You cannotno pot, in the samemateix gesturegest, shakesacsejar hand and give a blowcop.
176
751000
4000
12:47
So, there are naturalnatural antidotesantídots to emotionsemocions
177
755000
4000
12:51
that are destructivedestructiva to our innerinterior well-beingbenestar.
178
759000
3000
12:54
So that's the way to proceedprocedir. RejoicingAlegria compareden comparació to jealousygelosia.
179
762000
6000
O sigui que hem d'actuar així. L'alegria comparada amb la gelosia.
13:00
A kindamable of sensesentit of innerinterior freedomllibertat as oppositedavant to intenseintens graspingagafar and obsessionobsessió.
180
768000
7000
13:08
BenevolenceBenevolència, lovingestimant kindnessbondat againsten contra hatredodi.
181
776000
5000
La benevolença i l'amabilitat contra l'odi.
13:13
But, of coursecurs, eachcadascun emotionemoció then would need a particularparticular antidoteantídot.
182
781000
5000
13:18
AnotherUn altre way is to try to find a generalgeneral antidoteantídot to all emotionsemocions,
183
786000
5000
13:23
and that's by looking at the very naturenaturalesa.
184
791000
3000
i això es pot aconseguir mirant a la naturalesa mateixa.
13:26
UsuallyEn general, when we feel annoyedmolest, hatredodi or upsetmolest with someonealgú,
185
794000
6000
13:32
or obsessedobsessionat with something, the mindment goesva again and again to that objectobjecte.
186
800000
4000
13:36
EachCada time it goesva to the objectobjecte, it reinforceses reforça that obsessionobsessió or that annoyanceirritació.
187
804000
6000
13:42
So then, it's a self-perpetuatingPerpetua processprocés.
188
810000
4000
13:46
So what we need to look now is, insteaden canvi of looking outwardcap enfora, we look inwardcap endins.
189
814000
5000
13:51
Look at angerràbia itselfella mateixa.
190
819000
2000
Mireu a l'enuig.
13:53
It looksaspecte very menacingamenaçadors, like a billowingvaporoses monsoonmonsó cloudnúvol or thunderstormParcialment ennuvolat.
191
821000
6000
13:59
But we think we could sitseure on the cloudnúvol -- but if you go there, it's just mistboira.
192
827000
4000
14:03
LikewiseDe la mateixa manera, if you look at the thought of angerràbia,
193
831000
3000
14:06
it will vanishs'esvaeixen like frostgelades undersota the morningmatí sunsol.
194
834000
4000
14:10
If you do this again and again, the propensitypropensió,
195
838000
3000
14:13
the tendenciestendències for angerràbia to arisesorgir again
196
841000
3000
14:16
will be lessmenys and lessmenys eachcadascun time you dissolvedissoldre it.
197
844000
3000
14:19
And, at the endfinal, althoughencara que it maypot risepujar, it will just crosscreu the mindment,
198
847000
4000
I, al final, tot i que pot sorgir, només creuarà la ment,
14:23
like a birdau crossingcreuant the skycel withoutsense leavingsortint any trackseguiment.
199
851000
3000
14:26
So this is the principalprincipal of mindment trainingentrenament.
200
854000
4000
14:30
Now, it takes time because we -- it tookva prendre time for all those faultsfalles in our mindment,
201
858000
9000
14:39
the tendenciestendències, to buildconstruir up, so it will take time to unfoldes desenvolupen them as well.
202
867000
4000
14:43
But that's the only way to go.
203
871000
2000
Però aquesta es l'única manera.
14:45
MindMent transformationtransformació -- that is the very meaningsignificat of meditationmeditació.
204
873000
5000
14:50
It meanssignifica familiarizationFamiliarització with a newnou way of beingser,
