ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anant Agarwal - Education innovator
Through blended courses Anant Agarwal is pairing online education with face-to-face student-faculty interactions, reshaping the university campus experience.

Why you should listen

In the spring of 2012, Anant Agarwal, a professor of computer science at MIT, taught a course called “Circuits and Electronics.” As usual, it was MIT-level challenging, requiring knowledge of differential equations and calculus. Unlike in the past, though, the course enrolled 155,000 students from 162 countries around the world.

It was the inaugural offering of what is now edX , an online learning venture of MIT and Harvard, which Agarwal helms. Through this nonprofit -- one of the leading forces of the massive open online course (MOOC) movement -- Agarwal aims to make higher education globally available, for free.

Which does not preclude in-person education. On campus, Agarwal is pushing for what he calls blended courses, which interweave digital content and face-to-face interactions. "I see online learning as a rising tide that will lift all boats,” Agarwal says.

Agarwal holds the Guinness World Record for the largest microphone array, and was named one of Forbes' top education innovators in 2012. Find him on Twitter at @agarwaledu.

Anant Agarwal: Why massive open online courses (still) matter

Anant Agarwal: Per què els cursos oberts on-line massius (encara) importen

Filmed:

07:44
You'llVostè ' ll hearescoltar that a lot. That coursecurs has becomeconvertir-se en

van mesclar on-line i en persona,
07:56
and the resultsresultats were staggeringsorprenent.
190
464663
2308
i els resultats van ser impactants.
07:58
Now don't take these resultsresultats to the bankbanc just yetencara.
191
466971
2642
08:01
Just wait a little bitpoc longermés llarg as we
experimentexperiment with this some more,
192
469613
2488
08:04
but the earlyaviat resultsresultats are incredibleincreïble.
193
472101
2161
però els resultats preliminars són increïbles.
08:06
So traditionallytradicionalment, semestersemestre upondamunt semestersemestre,
194
474262
2397
Tradicionalment, semestre rere semestre,
08:08
for the pastpassat severaldiversos yearsanys, this coursecurs,
195
476659
2341
en els últims anys, aquest curs,
08:11
again, a harddur coursecurs,
196
479000
1689
insisteixo, un curs difícil,
08:12
had a failurefracàs ratetaxa of about 40 to 41 percentpercentatge
197
480689
3116
08:15
everycada semestersemestre.
198
483805
1500
cada semestre.
08:17
With this blendedbarrejat classclasse latetard last yearcurs,
199
485305

08:20
the failurefracàs ratetaxa fellva caure to ninenou percentpercentatge.
200
488003
3981
08:23
So the resultsresultats can be extremelyextremadament, extremelyextremadament good.
201
491984
3763
08:27
Now before we go too farlluny into this,
202
495747
3227
Però abans d'anar més lluny,
08:30
I'd like to spendGastar some time discussingdiscutint
203
498974
2652
voldria dedicar un temps a debatre
08:33
some keyclau ideasidees.
204
501626
1149
algunes idees clau.
08:34
What are some keyclau ideasidees
205
502775
1211
Quines són les idees clau
08:35
that makesfa all of this work?
206
503986
2857
que fan que tot això funcioni?
08:38
One ideaidea is activeactiu learningaprenentatge.
207
506843
2227
Una idea és l'aprenentage actiu.
08:41
The ideaidea here is, rathermés aviat than have studentsestudiants
208
509070
2440
08:43
walkcaminar into classclasse and watch lecturesconferències,
209
511510
2186
entrin a l'aula i escoltin la classe,
08:45
we replacereemplaçar this with what we call lessonslliçons.
210
513696
3042
ho substituïm pel que anomenem lliçons.
08:48
LessonsLliçons are interleavedintercalat sequencesseqüències
211
516738

Les lliçons són unes seqüències intercalades

of videosvídeos and interactiveinteractiu exercisesexercicis.
212
518982

de vídeos i exercicis interactius.
08:53
So a studentestudiant mightpotser watch a five-cinc-, seven-minuteset minuts videovideo
213
521663
3179
08:56
and followseguir that with an interactiveinteractiu exerciseexercici.

i a continuació fer un exercici interactiu.

09:05

09:22
The secondsegon ideaidea is self-pacingAuto-ritme.
226
550915

La segona idea és el propi ritme.
09:25
Now, when I wentva anar to a lectureConferència hallsaló,
227
553693
1636
09:27
and if you were like me,
228
555329
1290
i si us assembleu a mi,
09:28
by the fifthcinquè minuteminut I would loseperdre the professorprofessor.
229
556619

09:30
I wasn'tno ho era all that smartintel·ligent, and I would

09:37
InsteadEn canvi, wouldn'tno ho faria it be niceagradable with onlineen línia technologiestecnologies,
232
565356

09:39
we offeroferta videosvídeos and interactiveinteractiu

233
567826
3868
oferir vídeos i implicació interactiva als estudiants?
09:43
They can hitcolpejar the pausepause buttonbotó.

Poden rebobinar el professor.
09:47
HeckDiables, they can even mutemut the professorprofessor.
236
575916

Fins i tot poden silenciar el professor.
09:51
So this formforma of self-pacingAuto-ritme
237
579015
2054
Aquest tipus de ritme propi
09:53
can be very helpfulútil to learningaprenentatge.
238
581069
2625
pot ser molt útil per l'aprenentatge.
09:55
The thirdtercer ideaidea that we have is instantinstantani feedbackcomentaris.
239
583694
3354
09:59
With instantinstantani feedbackcomentaris,
240
587048
1477
Amb el feedback instantani,
10:00
the computerordinador gradesqualificacions exercisesexercicis.
241
588525
1855
l'ordinador puntua els exercicis.
10:02
I mean, how elsealtra cosa do you teachensenyar 150,000 studentsestudiants?
242
590380
2295
Vull dir, com sinó pots ensenyar a 150.000 estudiants?
10:04
Your computerordinador is gradingclassificació all the exercisesexercicis.
243
592675
2294
L'ordinador puntua tots els exercicis.
10:06
And we'vetenim all submittedenviat homeworksHomeworks,

Tots hem entregat deures,
10:08
and your gradesqualificacions come back two weekssetmanes latermés tard,
245
596503
2041
10:10
you've forgottenoblidat all about it.
246
598544
1624
i ja te n'has oblidat, d'allò.
10:12
I don't think I've still receivedrebut

247
600168

10:15
Some are never gradedqualificat.
249
603730
1347
Alguns no es puntuen mai.
10:17
So with instantinstantani feedbackcomentaris,
250
605077
1494
AIxí que amb el feedback instantani
10:18
studentsestudiants can try to applyaplicar answersrespostes.
251
606571

els estudiants poden provar de respondre.
10:20

10:22
They can try it again and try it again,

i això enganxa molt més.
10:26
They get the instantinstantani feedbackcomentaris,
