ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fabian Hemmert - Designer
Fabian Hemmert studies the theory and philosophy of embodiment, resistance and thinghood.

Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

Ich bin Doktorand,
00:19
and that meansmeint I have a questionFrage:
1
4000
2000
und das heißt, ich habe eine Frage:
00:21
how can we make digitaldigital contentInhalt graspablefassbar?
2
6000
3000
Wie können wir digitale Inhalte fassbar machen?
00:24
Because you see,
3
9000
2000
Denn, sehen Sie,
00:26
on the one handHand, there is the digitaldigital worldWelt
4
11000
2000
einerseits gibt es die digitale Welt,
00:28
and no questionFrage, manyviele things are happeningHappening there right now.
5
13000
3000
00:32
And for us humansMenschen, it's not quiteganz materialMaterial, it's not really there --
6
17000
2000
00:34
it's virtualvirtuell.
7
19000
2000
Sie ist virtuell.
00:36
On the other handHand, we humansMenschen,
8
21000
2000
Andererseits leben wir Menschen
00:38
we liveLeben in a physicalphysisch worldWelt.
9
23000
2000
in einer physischen Welt.
00:40
It's richReich, it tastesschmeckt good, it feelsfühlt sich good, it smellsriecht good.
10
25000
3000
00:43
So the questionFrage is: how do we get the stuffSachen over
11
28000
2000
Die Frage ist also: Wie transportieren wir all das
00:45
from the digitaldigital into the physicalphysisch?
12
30000
2000
von der digitalen in die physische Welt?
00:47
That's my questionFrage.
13
32000
2000
Das ist meine Frage.
00:49
If you look at the iPhoneiPhone with its touchberühren
14
34000
2000
00:51
and the WiiWii with its bodilykörperlich activityAktivität,
15
36000
2000
00:53
you can see the tendencyTendenz; it's gettingbekommen physicalphysisch.
16
38000
3000
erkennen wir die Tendenz: es wird physisch.
00:56
The questionFrage is: what's nextNächster?
17
41000
3000
Die Frage ist: Was kommt als nächstes?
00:59
Now, I have threedrei optionsOptionen that I would like to showShow you.
18
44000
3000
01:02
The first one is massMasse.
19
47000
2000
Die erste ist Masse.
01:04
As humansMenschen, we are sensitiveempfindlich
20
49000
2000
Als Menschen können wir spüren,
01:06
to where an objectObjekt in our handHand is heavyschwer.
21
51000
2000
01:08
So, could we use that in mobileMobile phonesTelefone?
22
53000
3000
Könnten wir das nicht in Handys nutzen?
01:11
Let me showShow you the weight-shiftingGewichtsverlagerung mobileMobile.
23
56000
2000
Lassen Sie mich Ihnen das gewichtsverlagernde Handy zeigen.
01:13
It is a mobileMobile phone-shapedTelefon förmigen- boxBox
24
58000
2000
01:15
that has an ironEisen weightGewicht insideinnen, whichwelche we can moveBewegung around,
25
60000
3000
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavyschwer.
26
63000
2000
01:20
We shiftVerschiebung the gravitationalGravitation centerCenter of it.
27
65000
3000
Wir bewegen das Gravitationszentrum.
01:23
For exampleBeispiel, we can augmentAugment digitaldigital contentInhalt
28
68000
3000
Zum Beispiel können wir digitale Inhalte
01:26
with physicalphysisch massMasse.
29
71000
2000
mit physischer Masse anreichern.
01:28
So you moveBewegung around the contentInhalt on a displayAnzeige,
30
73000
2000
01:30
but you can alsoebenfalls feel where it is just from the weightGewicht of the deviceGerät.
31
75000
3000
01:34
AnotherEin weiterer thing it's good for is navigationNavigation --
32
79000
3000
Das ist auch gut für Navigationen.
01:37
it can guideführen you around in a cityStadt.
33
82000
2000
Es kann uns durch eine Stadt führen.
01:39
It can tell you by its weightGewicht,
34
84000
2000
Es kann uns durch sein Gewicht sagen,
01:41
"Okay, moveBewegung right. WalkZu Fuß aheadvoraus. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
"Okay, rechts abbiegen. Geradeaus. Hier links abbiegen."
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the deviceGerät all the time;
36
89000
3000
Und das Gute daran ist, dass man nicht dauernd auf das Gerät schauen muss;
01:47
you have your eyesAugen freefrei to see the cityStadt.
37
92000
2000
01:49
Now, massMasse is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
Also, Masse ist die erste Sache.
01:52
the secondzweite thing, that's shapegestalten.
39
97000
2000
Die zweite ist Form.
01:54
We're alsoebenfalls sensitiveempfindlich to the shapegestalten of objectsObjekte we have in [our] handsHände.
40
99000
3000
01:57
So if I downloadherunterladen an e-booke-book and it has 20 pagesSeiten --
41
102000
3000
02:00
well, they could be thindünn, right --
42
105000
2000
nun, das wäre dann ziemlich dünn -
02:02
but if it has 500 pagesSeiten, I want to feel that "HarryHarry PotterPotter" --
43
107000
3000
02:05
it's thickdick. (LaughterLachen)
44
110000
2000
Das ist dick.
02:07
So let me showShow you the shape-changingForm ändern mobileMobile.
45
112000
3000
Lassen Sie mich Ihnen also das formwandelnde Handy zeigen.
02:10
Again, it's a mobileMobile phone-shapedTelefon förmigen- boxBox,
46
115000
2000
02:12
and this one can changeVeränderung its shapegestalten.
47
117000
2000
Und dieses hier kann seine Form verändern.
02:16
We can playspielen with the shapegestalten itselfselbst.
48
121000
2000
Wir können mit der Form spielen.
02:18
For exampleBeispiel, it can be thindünn in your pocketTasche,
49
123000
2000
02:20
whichwelche we of courseKurs want it to be;
50
125000
2000
02:22
but then if you holdhalt it in your handHand, it can leanlehnen towardsin Richtung you, be thickdick.
51
127000
3000
02:25
It's like taperedkonisch to the downsideNachteil.
52
130000
2000
Es wird dann zum Ende hin flacher.
02:27
If you changeVeränderung the graspGriff, it can adjusteinstellen to that.
53
132000
3000
02:31
It's alsoebenfalls usefulsinnvoll if you want to put it down on your nightstandNachttisch to watch a movieFilm
54
136000
3000
02:34
or use as an alarmAlarm clockUhr, it standssteht.
55
139000
3000
02:37
It's fairlyziemlich simpleeinfach.
56
142000
2000
Das ist recht einfach.
02:39
AnotherEin weiterer thing is,
57
144000
2000
Hinzukommt,
02:41
sometimesmanchmal we watch things on a mobileMobile phoneTelefon,
58
146000
2000
02:43
they are biggergrößer than the phoneTelefon itselfselbst.
59
148000
2000
die größer sind als das Telefon selbst.
02:45
So in that caseFall -- like here, there's an appApp that's biggergrößer than the phone'sTelefone screenBildschirm --
60
150000
3000
02:48
the shapegestalten of the phoneTelefon could tell you,
61
153000
2000
kann uns die Form des Handys mitteilen:
02:50
"Okay, off the screenBildschirm right here, there is more contentInhalt.
62
155000
2000
"Okay, hier rechts, außerhalb des Displays, ist noch mehr.
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thickerdicker at that edgeRand.
64
159000
3000
02:57
The shapegestalten is the secondzweite thing.
65
162000
3000
Die Form war also die zweite Sache.
03:00
The thirddritte thing operatesbetreibt on a differentanders levelEbene.
66
165000
3000
Die dritte funktioniert auf einem anderen Level.
03:03
As humansMenschen, we are socialSozial, we are empathicempathisch,
67
168000
3000
Wir Menschen sind sozial, wir sind empathisch,
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
und das ist großartig.
03:08
Wouldn'tWürde nicht that be a way to make mobileMobile phonesTelefone more intuitiveintuitiv?
69
173000
3000
03:11
Think of a hamsterHamster in the pocketTasche.
70
176000
2000
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to checkprüfen it.
71
178000
3000
Nun, ich kann ihn fühlen. Er ist okay. Ich muss nicht extra nachsehen.
03:16
Let me showShow you the livingLeben mobileMobile phoneTelefon.
72
181000
3000
Lassen Sie mich Ihnen das lebende Handy zeigen.
03:19
So, onceEinmal again, mobileMobile phone-shapedTelefon förmigen- boxBox,
73
184000
3000
Also, noch einmal, das Gehäuse in Handy-Form.
03:22
but this one, it has a breathAtem and a heartbeatHerzschlag,
74
187000
3000
03:25
and it feelsfühlt sich very organicorganisch.
75
190000
2000
und fühlt sich sehr organisch an.
03:27
(LaughterLachen)
76
192000
2000
(Gelächter)
03:29
And you can tell, it's relaxedentspannt right now.
77
194000
2000
03:31
Oh now, missedübersehen call, a newneu call,
78
196000
2000
Oh, jetzt ein Anruf in Abwesenheit, ein neuer Anruf,
03:33
newneu girlfriendFreundin maybe --
79
198000
2000
vielleicht die neue Freundin.
03:35
very excitingaufregend. (LaughterLachen)
80
200000
3000
Sehr aufregend.
03:38
How do we calmruhig it down?
81
203000
2000
Wie können wir es beruhigen?
03:40
You give it a patklopfen behindhinter the earsOhren,
82
205000
2000
Man tätschelt es hinter den Ohren,
03:42
and everything is all right again.
83
207000
3000
und alles ist wieder in Ordnung.
03:45
So, that's very intuitiveintuitiv, and that's what we want.
84
210000
2000
03:47
So, what we have seengesehen are threedrei waysWege
