Downloadable, printable clothing may be coming to a closet near you. What started as designer Danit Peleg's fashion school project turned into a collection of 3D-printed designs that have the strength and flexibility for everyday wear. "Fashion is a very physical thing," she says. "I wonder what our world will look like when our clothes will be digital."

00:06
In the past few months, I've been
traveling for weeks at a time
0
1157
3351
00:10
with only one suitcase of clothes.
1
4532
2031
00:12
One day, I was invited
to an important event,
2
6892
2159
00:14
and I wanted to wear
something special and new for it.
3
9075
2674
00:17
So I looked through my suitcase
and I couldn't find anything to wear.
4
12140
3413
00:21
I was lucky to be at the technology
conference on that day,
5
16133
2930
00:24
and I had access to 3D printers.
6
19087
2594
00:27
So I quickly designed
a skirt on my computer,
7
21705
2237
00:29
and I loaded the file on the printer.
8
23966
2145
00:31
It just printed the pieces overnight.
9
26135
2155
00:34
The next morning,
I just took all the pieces,
10
28629
2130
00:36
assembled them together in my hotel room,
11
30783
1967
00:38
and this is actually the skirt
that I'm wearing right now.
12
32774
2956
00:41
(Applause)
13
35754
3900
00:45
So it wasn't the first time
that I printed clothes.
14
39678
2783
00:47
For my senior collection
at fashion design school,
15
42485
2365
00:50
I decided to try and 3D print
an entire fashion collection from my home.
16
44874
4483
00:55
The problem was that I barely knew
anything about 3D printing,
17
49755
3457
00:58
and I had only nine months to figure out
how to print five fashionable looks.
18
53236
4775
01:04
I always felt most creative
when I worked from home.
19
59158
2774
01:07
I loved experimenting with new materials,
20
61956
2388
01:09
and I always tried
to develop new techniques
21
64368
2209
01:12
to make the most unique textiles
for my fashion projects.
22
66601
3503
01:16
I loved going to old factories
and weird stores
23
70509
2596
01:18
in search of leftovers
of strange powders and weird materials,
24
73129
4690
01:23
and then bring them home to experiment on.
25
77843
2346
01:26
As you can probably imagine,
26
80590
1483
01:27
my roommates didn't like that at all.
27
82097
2015
01:29
(Laughter)
28
84136
1005
01:30
So I decided to move on
to working with big machines,
29
85165
4113
01:34
ones that didn't fit in my living room.
30
89302
2093
01:36
I love the exact
and the custom work I can do
31
91419
2127
01:39
with all kinds of fashion technologies,
32
93570
2146
01:41
like knitting machines
and laser cutting and silk printing.
33
95740
3692
01:45
One summer break, I came here
to New York for an internship
34
100498
3175
01:49
at a fashion house in Chinatown.
35
103697
2350
01:51
We worked on two incredible dresses
that were 3D printed.
36
106071
3951
01:56
They were amazing --
like you can see here.
37
110598
2241
01:59
But I had a few issues with them.
38
113504
1920
02:00
They were made from hard plastics
and that's why they were very breakable.
39
115448
3668
02:05
The models couldn't sit in them,
40
119897
1537
02:06
and they even got scratched
from the plastics under their arms.
41
121458
3388
02:10
With 3D printing, the designers
had so much freedom
42
125444
3011
02:13
to make the dresses look
exactly like they wanted,
43
128479
3282
02:17
but still, they were very dependent
on big and expensive industrial printers
44
131785
5593
02:22
that were located in a lab
far from their studio.
45
137402
3157
02:26
Later that year, a friend gave me
a 3D printed necklace,
46
141451
3438
02:30
printed using a home printer.
47
144913
2135
02:32
I knew that these printers
were much cheaper
48
147072
2146
02:34
and much more accessible
than the ones we used at my internship.
49
149242
3256
02:38
So I looked at the necklace,
50
152984
1406
02:39
and then I thought, "If I can
print a necklace from home,
51
154414
3463
02:43
why not print my clothes from home, too?"
52
157901
2155
02:46
I really liked the idea that I wouldn't
have to go to the market
53
161108
3037
02:49
and pick fabrics that
someone else chose to sell --
54
164169
2624
02:52
I could just design them
and print them directly from home.
55
166817
4086
02:57
I found a small makerspace,
56
172184
1867
02:59
where I learned everything
I know about 3D printing.
57
174075
2623
03:02
Right away, they literally
gave me the key to the lab,
58
177036
2595
03:05
so I could experiment
into the night, every night.
59
179655
3018
03:08
The main challenge was to find the right
filament for printing clothes with.
60
183260
3898
03:12
So what is a filament?
61
187182
1156
03:13
Filament is the material
you feed the printer with.
62
188362
2432
03:16
And I spent a month or so
experimenting with PLA,
63
190818
2902
03:19
which is a hard and scratchy,
breakable material.
64
193744
3161
03:23
The breakthrough came
when I was introduced to Filaflex,
65
197632
2683
03:25
which is a new kind of filament.
66
200339
1542
03:27
It's strong, yet very flexible.
67
201905
2340
03:29
And with it, I was able to print
the first garment,
68
204269
3834
03:33
the red jacket that had
the word "Liberté" --
69
208127
3448
03:37
"freedom" in French --
70
211599
1195
03:38
embedded into it.
71
212818
1513
03:39
I chose this word because I felt
so empowered and free
72
214355
2793
03:42
when I could just design
a garment from my home
73
217172
2303
03:44
and then print it by myself.
74
219499
2109
03:47
And actually, you can easily
download this jacket,
75
222328
3414
03:51
and easily change the word
to something else.
76
225766
2628
03:53
For example, your name
or your sweetheart's name.
77
228418
2648
03:57
(Laughter)
78
231507
1150
03:58
So the printer plates are small,
79
233040
1726
04:00
so I had to piece the garment
together, just like a puzzle.
80
234790
4078
04:05
And I wanted to solve another challenge.
81
240238
2251
04:08
I wanted to print textiles
82
242513
1545
04:09
that I would use
just like regular fabrics.
83
244082
2505
04:12
That's when I found an open-source file
84
246611
1934
04:14
from an architect who designed
a pattern that I love.
85
248569
2589
04:16
And with it, I was able to print
a beautiful textile
86
251182
2719
04:19
that I would use
just like a regular fabric.
87
253925
2624
04:22
And it actually even looks
a little bit like lace.
88
257167
2731
04:26
So I took his file and I modified it,
and changed it, played with it --
89
261247
3390
04:30
many kinds of versions out of it.
90
264661
2594
04:33
And I needed to print
another 1,500 more hours
91
267654
4184
04:37
to complete printing my collection.
92
271862
2927
04:40
So I brought six printers to my home
and just printed 24-7.
93
274813
3808
04:44
And this is actually
a really slow process,
94
279176
2520
04:47
but let's remember the Internet
was significantly slower 20 years ago,
95
281720
4343
04:51
so 3D printing will also accelerate
96
286087
2325
04:53
and in no time you'll be able to print
a T-Shirt in your home
97
288436
2983
04:56
in just a couple of hours,
or even minutes.
98
291443
2965
05:00
So you guys, you want to see
what it looks like?
99
294826
2320
05:02
Audience: Yeah!
100
297170
1301
05:03
(Applause)
101
298495
1851
05:07
Danit Peleg: Rebecca is wearing
one of my five outfits.
102
302293
3516
05:11
Almost everything here she's wearing,
I printed from my home.
103
305833
4817
05:16
Even her shoes are printed.
104
311079
2251
05:18
Audience: Wow!
105
313354
1152
05:20
Audience: Cool!
106
314530
1165
05:23
(Applause)
107
317766
1755
05:25
Danit Peleg: Thank you, Rebecca.
108
319545
1543
05:27
(To audience) Thank you, guys.
109
321706
2120
05:30
So I think in the future,
materials will evolve,
110
324848
2517
05:32
and they will look and feel
like fabrics we know today,
111
327389
3181
05:36
like cotton or silk.
112
330594
1936
05:38
Imagine personalized clothes
that fit exactly to your measurements.
113
333349
3967
05:45
Music was once a very physical thing.
114
339537
1977
05:47
You would have to go
to the record shop and buy CDs,
115
341538
3024
05:50
but now you can just download the music --
116
344586
2650
05:52
digital music --
117
347260
1159
05:53
directly to your phone.
118
348443
1333
05:56
Fashion is also a very physical thing.
119
350505
2461
05:58
And I wonder what our world will look like
120
353300
2882
06:01
when our clothes will be digital,
just like this skirt is.
121
356206
3344
06:05
Thank you so much.
122
360056
1373
06:06
(Applause)
123
361453
1200
06:08
[Thank You]
