Why you should listen

Fiorenzo Omenetto is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and leads the laboratory for Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics and Biophotonics at Tufts University and also holds an appointment in the Department of Physics. Formerly a J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory before joining Tufts, his research is focused on interdisciplinary themes that span nonlinear optics, nanostructured materials (such as photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers), optofluidics and biopolymer based photonics. He has published over 100 papers and peer-review contributions across these various disciplines.

Since moving to Tufts at the end of 2005, he has proposed and pioneered (with David Kaplan) the use of silk as a material platform for photonics, optoelectronics and high-technology applications. This new research platform has recently been featured in MIT's Technology Review as one of the 2010 "top ten technologies likely to change the world."

2000
Dankon.
00:17
I'm thrilled to be here.
1
2000
2000
Min ĝojigas esti ĉi tie.
00:19
I'm going to talk about a new, old material
2
4000
3000
Mi priparolos novan antikvan materialon
00:22
that still continues to amaze us,
3
7000
2000
kiu ankoraŭ ade mirigas nin,
00:24
and that might impact the way we think
4
9000
2000
kaj povus influi nian pensmanieron
00:26
about material science, high technology --
5
11000
3000
pri materialscienco, altteĥnikaro --
00:29
and maybe, along the way,
6
14000
2000
kaj eble survoje povas fari ion
00:31
also do some stuff for medicine and for global health and help reforestation.
7
16000
3000
por kuracarto kaj monda sano, kaj helpi ĉe rearbarigo.
00:34
So that's kind of a bold statement.
8
19000
2000
Tio ja estas ia aŭdaca eldiro.
00:36
I'll tell you a little bit more.
9
21000
2000
Mi rakontos al vi iomete pli.
00:38
This material actually has some traits that make it seem almost too good to be true.
10
23000
3000
Tiu materialo fakte havas iujn trajtojn, kiuj ŝajnas tro bonaj por esti veraj.
00:41
It's sustainable; it's a sustainable material
11
26000
2000
Ĝi estas daŭrigebla, ĝi estas daŭrigeblaĵo
00:43
that is processed all in water and at room temperature --
12
28000
2000
prilaborita en nur akvo kaj ĉambra temperaturo --
00:45
and is biodegradable with a clock,
13
30000
2000
kaj biologie kontrolite malkomponebla,
00:47
so you can watch it dissolve instantaneously in a glass of water
14
32000
3000
vi do povas vidi ĝin tuj solviĝi en glaso da akvo
00:50
or have it stable for years.
15
35000
2000
aŭ konservi ĝin stabila dum jaroj.
00:52
It's edible; it's implantable in the human body
16
37000
2000
Ĝi manĝeblas, ĝi enplanteblas en homan korpon
00:54
without causing any immune response.
17
39000
2000
sen kaŭzi ian imunreagon.
00:56
It actually gets reintegrated in the body.
18
41000
2000
Ĝi efektive integriĝas en la korpo.
00:58
And it's technological,
19
43000
2000
Kaj ĝi teĥnike uzeblas,
01:00
so it can do things like microelectronics,
20
45000
2000
ĝi do povas utili en mikrocirkvitaroj,
01:02
and maybe photonics do.
21
47000
2000
kaj eble en lumcirkvitoj.
01:04
And the material
22
49000
2000
La materialo
01:06
looks something like this.
23
51000
3000
aspektas jene.
01:09
In fact, this material you see is clear and transparent.
24
54000
3000
Efektive, la materialo, kiun vi vidas, estas klara kaj travidebla.
01:12
The components of this material are just water and protein.
25
57000
3000
La eroj de tiu materialo estas nur akvo kaj proteino.
01:15
So this material is silk.
26
60000
3000
Tiu materialo ja estas silko.
01:18
So it's kind of different
27
63000
2000
Ĝi tamen iom malsamas
01:20
from what we're used to thinking about silk.
28
65000
2000
al tio, kion ni kutime pensas pri silko.
01:22
So the question is, how do you reinvent something
29
67000
2000
La demando estas, kiel oni reelpensas ion,
01:24
that has been around for five millennia?
30
69000
3000
kio estas konata jam de proksimume kvin mil jaroj.
01:27
The process of discovery, generally, is inspired by nature.
31
72000
3000
Ĝenerale la malkovran procedon inspiras la naturo.
01:30
And so we marvel at silk worms --
32
75000
2000
Kaj tiel ni miras pri silkraŭpoj --
01:32
the silk worm you see here spinning its fiber.
33
77000
3000
la silkraŭpo ĉi tie ŝpinanta sian fibron.
01:35
The silk worm does a remarkable thing:
34
80000
2000
Silkraŭpo faras ion rimarkindan:
01:37
it uses these two ingredients, protein and water,
35
82000
2000
ĝi uzas du ingrediencojn, proteino kaj akvo,
01:39
that are in its gland,
36
84000
2000
kiuj estas en ĝia glando,
01:41
to make a material that is exceptionally tough for protection --
37
86000
3000
por fari materialon aparte rezisteman por protekti sin --
01:44
so comparable to technical fibers
38
89000
2000
do kompareblan al teĥnikaj fibroj,
01:46
like Kevlar.
39
91000
2000
kia Kevlar.
01:48
And so in the reverse engineering process
40
93000
2000
Kaj do en la inversinĝenierada procedo
01:50
that we know about,
41
95000
2000
pri kiu ni scias,
01:52
and that we're familiar with,
42
97000
2000
kaj kiun ni bone konas,
01:54
for the textile industry,
43
99000
2000
pro la teksindustrio,
01:56
the textile industry goes and unwinds the cocoon
44
101000
3000
la teksindustrio ekhavas kaj malvolvas la kokonon
01:59
and then weaves glamorous things.
45
104000
2000
kaj sekve teksas elegantaĵojn.
02:01
We want to know how you go from water and protein
46
106000
2000
Ni volas scii, kiel ekante per akvo kaj proteino
02:03
to this liquid Kevlar, to this natural Kevlar.
47
108000
3000
fari tiun fluaĵan Kevlar-on, tiun naturan Kevlar-on.
02:06
So the insight
48
111000
2000
Do la demando estas,
02:08
is how do you actually reverse engineer this
49
113000
3000
kiel fari la inversan inĝenieradon
02:11
and go from cocoon to gland
50
116000
2000
irante de kokono al glando
02:13
and get water and protein that is your starting material.
51
118000
3000
kaj ekhavi akvon kaj proteinon, la ekmaterialoj.
02:16
And this is an insight
52
121000
2000
Kaj tio estas ideo
02:18
that came, about two decades ago,
53
123000
2000
kiu venis antaŭ proksimume du jardekoj
02:20
from a person that I'm very fortunate to work with,
54
125000
4000
de iu, kun kiu mi havas la bonŝancon kunlabori,
02:24
David Kaplan.
55
129000
3000
David Kaplan.
02:27
And so we get this starting material.
56
132000
2000
Kaj tiel ni ricevis tiun ekmaterialon.
02:29
And so this starting material is back to the basic building block.
57
134000
3000
Tiel tiu ekmaterialo ree iĝis la baza konstruero.
02:32
And then we use this to do a variety of things --
58
137000
2000
Ni uzas ĝin por fari diversajn aĵojn --
02:34
like, for example, this film.
59
139000
2000
ekzemple filmon.
02:36
And we take advantage of something that is very simple.
60
141000
2000
Kaj ni profitas de io, kio estas tre simpla.
02:38
The recipe to make those films
61
143000
2000
La recepto por fari tiujn filmojn
02:40
is to take advantage of the fact
62
145000
2000
estas profiti el la fakto,
02:42
that proteins are extremely smart at what they do.
63
147000
2000
ke proteinoj estas ege lertaj pri kio ili faras.
02:44
They find their way to self-assemble.
64
149000
2000
Ili trovas manieron memkuniĝi.
02:46
So the recipe is simple: you take the silk solution, you pour it,
65
151000
3000
Do la recepto simplas: prenu la silksolvaĵon, verŝu ĝin,
02:49
and you wait for the protein to self-assemble.
66
154000
2000
kaj atendu, ĝis la proteino memkuniĝas.
02:51
And then you detach the protein and you get this film,
67
156000
3000
Malfiksinte la proteinon vi ekhavas tiun filmon,
02:54
as the proteins find each other as the water evaporates.
68
159000
3000
ĉar la proteinoj trovas unu la alian sekiĝante.
02:57
But I mentioned that the film is also technological.
69
162000
2000
Sed mi asertis, ke la filmo ankaŭ estas teĥnikaĵa.
02:59
And so what does that mean?
70
164000
2000
Kion tio signifas?
03:01
It means that you can interface it
71
166000
3000
Tio signifas, ke eblas interligi ĝin
03:04
with some of the things that are typical of technology,
72
169000
2000
kun iuj el la specifaj teĥnikaĵoj,
03:06
like microelectronics and nanoscale technology.
73
171000
3000
kiaj mikrocirkvitaj kaj etskalaĵaj teĥnikaroj.
03:09
And the image of the DVD here
74
174000
2000
Ĉi tiu bildo de DVD
03:11
is just to illustrate a point
75
176000
2000
estas nur por ilustri punkton,
03:13
that silk follows very subtle topographies of the surface,
76
178000
4000
ke silko sekvas subtilegajn surfacajn malglataĵojn,
03:17
which means that it can replicate features on the nanoscale.
77
182000
3000
kio signifas, ke ili kapablas reprodukti etskalajn aĵojn.
03:20
So it would be able to replicate the information
78
185000
2000
Ĝi do devus kapabli reprodukti la informon,
03:22
that is on the DVD.
79
187000
3000
kiu estas sur la DVD.
03:25
And we can store information that's film with water and protein.
80
190000
3000
Kaj ni povas konservi informon, kiu estas filmo el akvo kaj proteino.
03:28
So we tried something out, and we wrote a message in a piece of silk,
81
193000
3000
Ni elprovis ion skribante mesaĝon sur peco da silko,
03:31
which is right here, and the message is over there.
82
196000
2000
kiu estas ĉi tie, kaj jen estas la mesaĝo.
03:33
And much like in the DVD, you can read it out optically.
83
198000
3000
Kaj tre simile kiel en la DVD, eblas optike legi ĝin.
03:36
And this requires a stable hand,
84
201000
2000
Por tio necesas stabila mano.
03:38
so this is why I decided to do it onstage in front of a thousand people.
85
203000
3000
tial mi do decidis fari ĝin surpodie antaŭ milo da homoj.
03:42
So let me see.
86
207000
2000
Ni do vidu.
03:44
So as you see the film go in transparently through there,
87
209000
2000
Kiel vi vidas la filmo eniras travideble tra ĝi.
03:46
and then ...
88
211000
2000
kaj tiam ...
03:53
(Applause)
89
218000
7000
(Aplaŭdo)
04:00
And the most remarkable feat
90
225000
2000
La plej rimarkinda atingo estas,
04:02
is that my hand actually stayed still long enough to do that.
91
227000
3000
ke mia mano nun restis sufiĉe longe senmova por fari tion.
04:05
So once you have these attributes
92
230000
3000
Do, de kiam vi konas tiujn ecojn
04:08
of this material,
93
233000
2000
de tiu materialo,
04:10
then you can do a lot of things.
94
235000
2000
vi povas fari multajn aferojn.
04:12
It's actually not limited to films.
95
237000
2000
Ili ne estas limigitaj al filmoj.
04:14
And so the material can assume a lot of formats.
96
239000
3000
La materialo povas havi multajn formojn.
04:17
And then you go a little crazy, and so you do various optical components
97
242000
3000
Kaj do oni iom freneziĝas, kaj faras diversajn optikajn erojn
04:20
or you do microprism arrays,
98
245000
2000
aŭ faras etprismajn areojn,
04:22
like the reflective tape that you have on your running shoes.
99
247000
2000
kia la reflekta bendo, kiu estas sur viaj kurŝuoj.
04:24
Or you can do beautiful things
100
249000
2000
Aŭ vi povas fari belaĵojn,
04:26
that, if the camera can capture, you can make.
101
251000
2000
kiuj konstrueblas - ĉu la kamerao povas vidi?
04:28
You can add a third dimensionality to the film.
102
253000
3000
Vi povas aldoni trian dimension al la filmo.
04:31
And if the angle is right,
103
256000
2000
Kaj, se la angulo ĝustas,
04:33
you can actually see a hologram appear in this film of silk.
104
258000
3000
vi nun povas vidi hologramon aperi en tiu silkfilmo.
04:38
But you can do other things.
105
263000
2000
Sed eblas fari aliajn aĵojn.
04:40
You can imagine that then maybe you can use a pure protein to guide light,
106
265000
2000
Imageblas uzi puran proteinon por konduki lumon,
04:42
and so we've made optical fibers.
107
267000
2000
ni do faris optikajn fibrojn.
04:44
But silk is versatile and it goes beyond optics.
108
269000
3000
Sed silko estas multekapabla kaj preterpasas optikon.
04:47
And you can think of different formats.
109
272000
2000
Oni povas pensi pri diversajn formojn.
04:49
So for instance, if you're afraid of going to the doctor and getting stuck with a needle,
110
274000
3000
Ekzemple, se vi timas viziti kuraciston kaj pikiĝi per injektilo,
04:52
we do microneedle arrays.
111
277000
2000
ni faras etnadlajn areojn.
04:54
What you see there on the screen is a human hair
112
279000
2000
Jen vi vidas sur la ekrano homan haron
04:56
superimposed on the needle that's made of silk --
113
281000
2000
supermetitan sur la nadlo farita el silko --
04:58
just to give you a sense of size.
114
283000
2000
nur por doni ideon pri grando.
05:00
You can do bigger things.
115
285000
2000
Eblas fari pli grandajn aĵojn.
05:02
You can do gears and nuts and bolts --
116
287000
2000
Eblas fari dentradojn kaj ŝraŭbojn --
05:04
that you can buy at Whole Foods.
117
289000
3000
kiujn vi povas aĉeti en vendejego.
05:07
And the gears work in water as well.
118
292000
3000
Kaj la dentradoj ankaŭ funkcias en akvo.
05:10
So you think of alternative mechanical parts.
119
295000
2000
Do eblas pensi pri alternativaj mekanikaĵoj.
05:12
And maybe you can use that liquid Kevlar if you need something strong
120
297000
3000
Kaj eble vi povas uzi tiun fluaĵan Kevlar-on, se vi bezonas ion rezistan
05:15
to replace peripheral veins, for example,
121
300000
3000
por anstataŭigi ĉirkaŭaĵajn vejnojn, ekzemple,
05:18
or maybe an entire bone.
122
303000
2000
aŭ eble tutan oston.
05:20
And so you have here a little example
123
305000
2000
Jen vi vidas ĉi tie ekzempleton
05:22
of a small skull --
124
307000
2000
de kranieto --
05:24
what we call mini Yorick.
125
309000
2000
ni nomas ĝin eta Yorick.
05:26
(Laughter)
126
311000
3000
(Ridado)
05:29
But you can do things like cups, for example,
127
314000
3000
Sed eblas fari aĵojn, ekzemple tasojn,
05:32
and so, if you add a little bit of gold, if you add a little bit of semiconductors
128
317000
3000
kaj per aldono de iom da oro aŭ da duonkonduktaĵo
05:35
you could do sensors that stick on the surfaces of foods.
129
320000
3000
eblas fari sensilojn, kiuj gluiĝas sur la surfacoj de nutraĵoj.
05:38
You can do electronic pieces
130
323000
2000
Eblas fari elektronikaĵajn erojn,
05:40
that fold and wrap.
131
325000
2000
kiuj faldiĝas kaj volviĝas.
05:42
Or if you're fashion forward, some silk LED tattoos.
132
327000
3000
Aŭ antaŭante la modon, silkajn lumdiodajn tatuojn.
05:45
So there's versatility, as you see,
133
330000
3000
Kiel vi vidas, estas multuzeblo,
05:48
in the material formats,
134
333000
2000
en la materiaj formoj,
05:50
that you can do with silk.
135
335000
3000
kiujn oni povas fari per silko.
05:53
But there are still some unique traits.
136
338000
2000
Sed ankaŭ estas iuj unikaj trajtoj.
05:55
I mean, why would you want to do all these things for real?
137
340000
3000
Tio estas, kial oni efektive volus fari ĉiujn ĉi aĵojn?
05:58
I mentioned it briefly at the beginning;
138
343000
2000
Ĉe la komenco mi koncize menciis ĝin;
06:00
the protein is biodegradable and biocompatible.
139
345000
2000
la proteino estas biologie digestebla kaj akceptata.
06:02
And you see here a picture of a tissue section.
140
347000
3000
Ĉi tie vi vidas bildon de hista sekcaĵo.
06:05
And so what does that mean, that it's biodegradable and biocompatible?
141
350000
3000
Ĉu tio signifas, ke ĝi estas biologie digestebla kaj akceptata?
06:08
You can implant it in the body without needing to retrieve what is implanted.
142
353000
3000
Eblas enplanti ĝin en la korpon sen neceso forigi la enplantaĵon.
06:11
Which means that all the devices that you've seen before and all the formats,
143
356000
4000
Kio signifas, ke ĉiuj aĵoj, kiujn vi vidis, kaj ĉiuj formoj
06:15
in principle, can be implanted and disappear.
144
360000
3000
principe enplanteblas kaj malaperos.
06:18
And what you see there in that tissue section,
145
363000
2000
Tio, kion vi vidas en ĉi tiu hista sekcaĵo,
06:20
in fact, is you see that reflector tape.
146
365000
3000
fakte estas tiu reflekta bendo.
06:23
So, much like you're seen at night by a car,
147
368000
3000
Do, kiel oni estas nokte vidata de aŭto,
06:26
then the idea is that you can see, if you illuminate tissue,
148
371000
3000
la ideo estas, ke oni povas vidi, se oni prilumas histon,
06:29
you can see deeper parts of tissue
149
374000
2000
oni povas vidi pli profundajn partojn de histo
06:31
because there is that reflective tape there that is made out of silk.
150
376000
2000
ĉar tie estas tiu reflekta bendo farita el silko.
06:33
And you see there, it gets reintegrated in tissue.
151
378000
2000
Ĉi tie vi vidas, ke ĝi integriĝas en histon.
06:35
And reintegration in the human body
152
380000
2000
Kaj integriĝo en homa korpo
06:37
is not the only thing,
153
382000
2000
ne estas la sola afero.
06:39
but reintegration in the environment is important.
154
384000
3000
Sed gravas reintegriĝo en la medion.
06:42
So you have a clock, you have protein,
155
387000
2000
Do vi havas horloĝon, vi havas proteinon,
06:44
and now a silk cup like this
156
389000
2000
kaj nun silka taso, kia ĉi tiu
06:46
can be thrown away without guilt --
157
391000
3000
povas esti forĵetata senpente.
06:49
(Applause)
158
394000
7000
(Aplaŭdo)
06:56
unlike the polystyrene cups
159
401000
3000
Ne kiel polistirenaj tasoj
06:59
that unfortunately fill our landfills everyday.
160
404000
3000
kiuj malbonŝance ĉiutage plenigas niajn ŝutejojn.
07:02
It's edible,
161
407000
2000
Ĝi manĝeblas,
07:04
so you can do smart packaging around food
162
409000
2000
do eblas meti nutraĵon en inteligentan pakaĵon,
07:06
that you can cook with the food.
163
411000
2000
kiun vi povas kuiri kun la nutraĵo.
07:08
It doesn't taste good,
164
413000
2000
Ĝi ne bongustas,
07:10
so I'm going to need some help with that.
165
415000
2000
mi do bezonos iom da helpo pri tio.
07:12
But probably the most remarkable thing is that it comes full circle.
166
417000
3000
Sed verŝajne plej rimarkindas, ke ĝi plene recikligeblas.
07:15
Silk, during its self-assembly process,
167
420000
2000
Silko dum sia memkuniĝa procedo
07:17
acts like a cocoon for biological matter.
168
422000
2000
agas kiel kokono por biologia materialo.
07:19
And so if you change the recipe,
169
424000
2000
Kaj se oni ŝanĝas la recepton.
07:21
and you add things when you pour --
170
426000
2000
kaj aldonas aĵojn, kiam oni verŝas --
07:23
so you add things to your liquid silk solution --
171
428000
2000
do aldonas aĵojn en la fluaĵan silksolvaĵon --
07:25
where these things are enzymes
172
430000
2000
kie tiuj aĵoj estas enzimoj
07:27
or antibodies or vaccines,
173
432000
3000
aŭ imunigaj substancoj aŭ vakcinoj,
07:30
the self-assembly process
174
435000
2000
la memkuniĝa procedo
07:32
preserves the biological function of these dopants.
175
437000
3000
konservas la biologian funkcion de ĉi tiuj.
07:35
So it makes the materials environmentally active
176
440000
3000
Ĝi tiel igas la materialojn ekologie aktivaj
07:38
and interactive.
177
443000
2000
kaj interaktivaj.
07:40
So that screw that you thought about beforehand
178
445000
2000
Tiel la ŝraŭbo, pri kiu ni pensis antaŭe,
07:42
can actually be used
179
447000
2000
efektive uzeblas
07:44
to screw a bone together -- a fractured bone together --
180
449000
3000
por ripari rompiĝintan oston --
07:47
and deliver drugs at the same,
181
452000
2000
kaj samtempe provizi sanigilon
07:49
while your bone is healing, for example.
182
454000
3000
por resanigi la oston, ekzemple.
07:52
Or you could put drugs in your wallet and not in your fridge.
183
457000
3000
Aŭ eblus konservi sanigilojn en sia biletujo kaj ne en sia malvarmujo.
07:55
So we've made a silk card
184
460000
3000
Ni do faris silkan karton,
07:58
with penicillin in it.
185
463000
2000
kun penicilino en ĝi.
08:00
And we stored penicillin at 60 degrees C,
186
465000
2000
Kaj ni konservis penicilinon ĉe 60 ° celsiusaj.
08:02
so 140 degrees Fahrenheit,
187
467000
2000
do 140 Farenhejtaj,
08:04
for two months without loss of efficacy of the penicillin.
188
469000
3000
dum du monatoj sen perdo de efikeco de la penicilino.
08:07
And so that could be ---
189
472000
2000
Kaj tio povus esti ---
08:09
(Applause)
190
474000
4000
(Aplaŭdo)
08:13
that could be potentially a good alternative
191
478000
2000
tio povus esti ebla taŭga alternativo
08:15
to solar powered refrigerated camels. (Laughter)
192
480000
3000
por sunenergie malvarmigitaj kameloj.
08:18
And of course, there's no use in storage if you can't use [it].
193
483000
3000
Kaj kompreneble ne estas uzo de konservejo, se vi ne povas uzi ĝin.
08:21
And so there is this other unique material trait
194
486000
4000
Kaj jen estas alia unika trajto,
08:25
that these materials have, that they're programmably degradable.
195
490000
3000
kiun havas tiuj materialoj, ke ili laŭprograme malkomponeblas.
08:28
And so what you see there is the difference.
196
493000
2000
Jen vi vidas la diferencon.
08:30
In the top, you have a film that has been programmed not to degrade,
197
495000
3000
Supre estas filmo programita por ne malkomponiĝi,
08:33
and in the bottom, a film that has been programmed to degrade in water.
198
498000
3000
malsupre estas filmo programita por malkomponiĝi en akvo.
08:36
And what you see is that the film on the bottom
199
501000
2000
Kaj vi vidas, ke la filmo en la malsupro
08:38
releases what is inside it.
200
503000
2000
liberigas, kion ĝi enhavas.
08:40
So it allows for the recovery of what we've stored before.
201
505000
3000
Ĝi do ebligas la rehavon de tio, kion ni enmetis antaŭe.
08:43
And so this allows for a controlled delivery of drugs
202
508000
3000
Tiel ĝi ebligas kontrolatan provizadon de sanigiloj
08:46
and for reintegration in the environment
203
511000
3000
kaj reintegriĝon en la medio
08:49
in all of these formats that you've seen.
204
514000
2000
en ĉiuj formoj, kiujn vi vidis.
08:51
So the thread of discovery that we have really is a thread.
205
516000
3000
Tiel la malkovra fadeno, kiun ni reale havas, estas fadeno.
08:54
We're impassioned with this idea that whatever you want to do,
206
519000
3000
Nin pasiigas tiu ideo, ke kion ajn ni volas fari,
08:57
whether you want to replace a vein or a bone,
207
522000
2000
ĉu vi volas anstataŭigi vejnon aŭ oston,
08:59
or maybe be more sustainable in microelectronics,
208
524000
3000
aŭ eble agi pli daŭrigeble en mikrocirkvitoj,
09:02
perhaps drink a coffee in a cup
209
527000
2000
eble trinki kafon en taso
09:04
and throw it away without guilt,
210
529000
2000
kaj forĵeti ĝin senpente,
09:06
maybe carry your drugs in your pocket,
211
531000
2000
eble porti siajn sanigilojn en la poŝo,
09:08
deliver them inside your body
212
533000
2000
liveri ilin ene de via korpo
09:10
or deliver them across the desert,
213
535000
2000
aŭ liveri ilin trans la dezerton,
09:12
the answer may be in a thread of silk.
214
537000
2000
la solvo povas esti en silka fadeno.
09:14
Thank you.
215
539000
2000
Dankon.
09:16
(Applause)
216
541000
18000

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fiorenzo Omenetto - Biomedical engineer
Fiorenzo G. Omenetto's research spans nonlinear optics, nanostructured materials (such as photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers), biomaterials and biopolymer-based photonics. Most recently, he's working on high-tech applications for silk.
