ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Danny Hillis - Computer theorist
Inventor, scientist, author, engineer -- over his broad career, Danny Hillis has turned his ever-searching brain on an array of subjects, with surprising results.

Why you should listen

Danny Hillis is an inventor, scientist, author and engineer. While completing his doctorate at MIT, he pioneered the concept of parallel computers that is now the basis for graphics processors and cloud computing. He holds more than 300 US patents, covering parallel computers, disk arrays, forgery prevention methods, various electronic and mechanical devices, and the pinch-to-zoom display interface. He has recently been working on problems in medicine as well. He is also the designer of a 10,000-year mechanical clock, and he gave a TED Talk in 1994 that is practically prophetic. Throughout his career, Hillis has worked at places like Disney, and now MIT and Applied Invention, always looking for the next fascinating problem.

Danny Hillis: The Internet could crash. We need a Plan B

Danny Hillis: Internet podría estallar. Necesitamos un plan B

Filmed:

00:34

00:45
ObviouslyObviamente a very smallpequeña communitycomunidad.
9

Obviamente, era una

00:48
There were only two other DannysDannys on the InternetInternet then.

Había otros dos Danny

00:52
I knewsabía them bothambos.

Los conocía a ambos.
00:53
We didn't all know eachcada other,
12

No nos conocíamos todos,
00:55
but we all kindtipo of trustedconfiable eachcada other,
13

pero confiábamos los unos en los otros,
00:58
and that basicBASIC feelingsensación of trustconfianza
14

y ese sentimiento básico de confianza
01:02
permeatedpermeado the wholetodo networkred,
15

01:05
and there was a realreal sensesentido that

y había una sensación real de que
01:07
we could dependdepender on eachcada other to do things.
17
51511

podíamos depender unos

01:10
So just to give you an ideaidea of the levelnivel of trustconfianza in this communitycomunidad,
18
54517
3575
Y para darles una idea del nivel

01:13
let me tell you what it was like
19
58092
1625
les contaré cómo era
01:15
to registerregistro a domaindominio namenombre in the earlytemprano daysdías.
20
59717
4105
registrar un nombre

01:19
Now, it just so happenedsucedió that I got to registerregistro
21
63822
2630
Dio la casualidad que tuve que registrar
01:22
the thirdtercero domaindominio namenombre on the InternetInternet.
22
66452
2460
el tercer nombre de dominio en Internet.
01:24
So I could have anything I wanted
23
68912
1648
Así que podía tener lo que quisiera
01:26
other than bbnbbn.comcom and symbolicssimbólico.comcom.
24
70560
4445
excepto bbn.com y symbolics.com.
01:30
So I pickedescogido think.comcom, but then I thought,
25
75005
3414
Entonces elegí think.com, pero pensé
01:34
you know, there's a lot of really interestinginteresante namesnombres out there.
26
78419

que había tantos nombres
interesantes por ahí.
01:37
Maybe I should registerregistro a fewpocos extrasextras just in casecaso.
27
81405
4209
Quizá debería registrar
algunos adicionales, por si acaso.
01:41
And then I thought, "NahNah, that wouldn'tno lo haría be very nicebonito."
28
85614
3284
Después pensé:
"No, no sería muy bueno".
01:44
(LaughterRisa)

(Risas)
01:50
That attitudeactitud of only takingtomando what you need
30
94593
3629
Esa actitud de tomar
sólo lo que se necesita
01:54
was really what everybodytodos had on the networkred in those daysdías,
31
98222
4044
era realmente lo que había
en la red en aquellos días,
01:58
and in facthecho, it wasn'tno fue just the people on the networkred,
32
102266
3297
y, de hecho, no solo
en la gente de la red
02:01
but it was actuallyactualmente kindtipo of builtconstruido into the protocolsprotocolos
33
105563
2720
sino que en realidad
estaba en los protocolos
02:04
of the InternetInternet itselfsí mismo.
34
108283
1944
de la propia Internet.
02:06
So the basicBASIC ideaidea of I.P., or InternetInternet protocolprotocolo,
35
110227
3859
La idea básica del IP,
el protocolo de Internet,
02:09
and the way that the -- the routingenrutamiento algorithmalgoritmo that used it,
36

3729
y la forma en que el...

02:17

38
121944
2118

02:19
And so, if you had some extraextra bandwidthancho de banda,
39
124062
3013
Así, si uno tenía algo
de ancho de banda extra,
02:22
you'dtu hubieras deliverentregar a messagemensaje for someonealguien.
40
127075
1443
enviaba el mensaje de alguien.
02:24
If they had some extraextra bandwidthancho de banda, they would deliverentregar a messagemensaje for you.
41
128518
2993
Y si ese alguien tenía ancho de banda extra,
enviaba el mensaje de uno.
02:27
You'dTu hubieras kindtipo of dependdepender on people to do that,
42
131511
2014
En cierta forma dependíamos de la gente
02:29
and that was the buildingedificio blockbloquear.
43
133525
2664
y ese fue el bloque constitutivo.
02:32
It was actuallyactualmente interestinginteresante that suchtal a communistcomunista principleprincipio

02:39
but it obviouslyobviamente workedtrabajó really well,
47
143683
3070
pero, obviamente, funcionó muy bien
02:42
and we all saw what happenedsucedió with the InternetInternet.
48
146753
3443
y todos vimos lo que ocurría con Internet.
02:46
It was incrediblyincreíblemente successfulexitoso.
49
150196
2272
Tuvo muchísimo éxito.
02:48
In facthecho, it was so successfulexitoso that there's no way
50
152468
3297
De hecho, tuvo tanto éxito
que no hay manera
02:51
that these daysdías you could make a booklibro like this.
51
155765
3588
de que en estos días pudiera
hacerse un libro como este.
02:55
My rougháspero calculationcálculo is it would be about 25 milesmillas thickgrueso.
52
159353

Mi cálculo aproximado
da unos 25 km de espesor.
03:01
But, of coursecurso, you couldn'tno pudo do it,
53
165519
1174
Pero, claro, no se podría hacer
03:02
because we don't know the namesnombres of all the people
54
166693
1790
porque no sabemos los nombres
de toda las personas
03:04
with InternetInternet or emailcorreo electrónico addressesdirecciones,
55
168483
3074
que tienen Internet
o correo electrónico
03:07
and even if we did know theirsu namesnombres,
56
171557
1532
e incluso si supiéramos los nombres,
03:08
I'm prettybonita sure that they would not want theirsu namenombre,
57
173089
2433
estoy casi seguro de que

03:15
So the facthecho is that there's a lot of badmalo guys on the InternetInternet these daysdías,
59
179818
3702
Pero el hecho es que hoy en día
hay mucha gente mala en Internet,
03:19
and so we dealtrepartido with that by makingfabricación
60
183520
4171
y lo sobrellevamos mediante
03:23

63

pequeñas cosas que
no son realmente Internet
03:31
but are madehecho out of the samemismo buildingedificio blocksbloques,
64
195923
1971
pero que están hechas de los mismos
bloques constitutivos;
03:33
but we're still basicallybásicamente buildingedificio it out of those
65
197894
2240
básicamente todavía construimos
03:36
samemismo buildingedificio blocksbloques with those samemismo assumptionssuposiciones of trustconfianza.
66
200134
4267
con los mismos bloques y las mismas

03:40
And that meansmedio that it's vulnerablevulnerable
67

2722
Eso significa que es vulnerable
03:43

en un procesador.
06:48
And the way the InternetInternet workstrabajos is
134
392178
2272
El funcionamiento de Internet
consiste en que
06:50
the routersenrutadores are basicallybásicamente exchangingintercambiando informationinformación
135
394450
3567
los enrutadores básicamente
intercambian información
06:53
about how they can get messagesmensajes to placeslugares,
136
398017
2590
de cómo pueden entregar
mensajes en ubicaciones
06:56
and this one processorprocesador, because of a brokenroto cardtarjeta,
137
400607
3898
y este procesador,
debido a una tarjeta dañada,
07:00
decideddecidido it could actuallyactualmente get a messagemensaje
138
404505
2009
decidió que podía entregar un mensaje
07:02
to some placelugar in negativenegativo time.
139
406514
2688
a alguna ubicación en tiempo negativo.
07:05
So, in other wordspalabras, it claimedreclamado it could deliverentregar a messagemensaje before you sentexpedido it.
140
409202
3983
En otras palabras, alegó que podía entregar
un mensaje antes de que lo enviáramos.
07:09
So of coursecurso, the fastestlo más rápido way to get a messagemensaje anywhereen cualquier sitio
141
413185
3150
Por supuesto, la forma más rápida
de entregar un mensaje
07:12
was to sendenviar it to this guy,
142
416335
1876
era enviarlo a ese tipo
07:14
who would sendenviar it back in time and get it there supersúper earlytemprano,
143
418211
3547
que podía reenviarlo a tiempo
y entregarlo súper rápido
07:17
so everycada messagemensaje in the InternetInternet
144
421758
2856
y así todos los mensajes de Internet
07:20
startedempezado gettingconsiguiendo switchedcambiado throughmediante this one nodenodo,
145
424614
3242
empezaron a conmutarse por este nodo
07:23
and of coursecurso that cloggedobstruido everything up.
146
427856
1516
y, claro, eso obstruyó todo.
07:25
Everything startedempezado breakingrotura.
147
429372
2155
Todo empezó a romperse.
07:27
The interestinginteresante thing was, thoughaunque,
148
431527
2040
Lo interesante fue que
07:29
that the sysadminssysadmins were ablepoder to fixfijar it,
149
433567
1840
los administradores pudieron resolverlo
07:31
but they had to basicallybásicamente turngiro everycada singlesoltero thing on the InternetInternet off.
150
435407
4782
pero tuvieron que apagar toda Internet.
07:36
Now, of coursecurso you couldn'tno pudo do that todayhoy.
151
440189
1398
Ahora, por supuesto,
hoy no se puede hacer eso.
07:37
I mean, everything off, it's like
152
441587
2394
Apagar todo sería como
07:39
the serviceServicio call you get from the cablecable companyempresa,
153
443981
2232
afectar el servicio de
su compañía de cable
07:42
exceptexcepto for the wholetodo worldmundo.
154
446213
3761
pero a nivel planetario.
07:45
Now, in facthecho, they couldn'tno pudo do it for a lot of reasonsrazones todayhoy.
155
449974
2059
Pero, de hecho, eso hoy no se podría
hacer por muchas razones.
07:47
One of the reasonsrazones is a lot of theirsu telephonesteléfonos
156
452033
2622
Una de las razones es que
muchos de sus teléfonos
07:50
use IPIP protocolprotocolo and use things like SkypeSkype and so on
157
454655
2969
usan el protocolo IP
y tienen Skype y cosas así
07:53
that go throughmediante the InternetInternet right now,
158
457624
2069
que están montadas sobre Internet
07:55
and so in facthecho we're becomingdevenir dependentdependiente on it
159
459693
3282
y nos estamos volviendo
dependientes de eso
07:58
for more and more differentdiferente things,
160
462975
1792
cada vez con más cosas
08:00
like when you take off from LAXFLOJO,
161
464767
2938
como cuando uno despega
en Los Ángeles,
08:03
you're really not thinkingpensando you're usingutilizando the InternetInternet.
162
467705
1881
uno no piensa que está
usando Internet.
08:05
When you pumpbomba gasgas, you really don't think you're usingutilizando the InternetInternet.
163
469586
4116
Cuando bombeamos gas, no pensamos
que estamos usando Internet.
08:09
What's happeningsucediendo increasinglycada vez más, thoughaunque, is these systemssistemas
164
473702
2125
Pero estos sistemas, cada vez más,
08:11
are beginningcomenzando to use the InternetInternet.
165
475827
1867
están empezando a usar Internet.
08:13
MostMás of them aren'tno son basedbasado on the InternetInternet yettodavía,
166
477694
3050
Muchos todavía no se basan en Internet
08:16
but they're startingcomenzando to use the InternetInternet for serviceServicio functionsfunciones,
167
480744
2536
pero están empezando a usar Internet
para funciones de servicio,
08:19
for administrativeadministrativo functionsfunciones,
168
483280
1905
para funciones administrativas,
08:21
and so if you take something like the cellcelda phoneteléfono systemsistema,
169
485185
3063
y si tomamos el sistema
de telefonía celular
08:24
whichcual is still relativelyrelativamente independentindependiente of the InternetInternet for the mostmás partparte,
170
488248
4320
que en su mayor parte aún
es independiente de Internet,
08:28
InternetInternet piecespiezas are beginningcomenzando to sneakfurtivo into it
171
492568
2959
se están empezando a colar
partes de Internet
08:31
in termscondiciones of some of the controlcontrolar and administrativeadministrativo functionsfunciones,
172
495527
3804
en materia de funciones
de control y administrativas
08:35
and it's so temptingtentador to use these samemismo buildingedificio blocksbloques
173
499331
2330
y es muy tentador usar
esos bloques de construcción
08:37
because they work so well, they're cheapbarato,
174
501661
2264
porque funcionan muy bien,
son muy baratos,
08:39
they're repeatedrepetido, and so on.
175
503925
1100
se repiten, etc.
08:40
So all of our systemssistemas, more and more,
176
505025
2772
Todos nuestros sistemas,
cada vez más,
08:43
are startingcomenzando to use the samemismo technologytecnología
177
507797
1780
empiezan a usar la misma tecnología
08:45
and startingcomenzando to dependdepender on this technologytecnología.
178
509577
2067
y empiezan a depender
de esta tecnología.
08:47
And so even a modernmoderno rocketcohete shipenviar these daysdías
179
511644
2425
Hasta una moderna nave espacial hoy por hoy
08:49
actuallyactualmente usesusos InternetInternet protocolprotocolo to talk
180
514069
2726
usa el protocolo de Internet para hablar
08:52
from one endfin of the rocketcohete shipenviar to the other.
181
516795
1816
desde un extremo de la nave al otro.
08:54
That's crazyloca. It was never designeddiseñado to do things like that.
182
518611
3186
Es loco. No fue diseñado
para hacer estas cosas.
08:57
So we'venosotros tenemos builtconstruido this systemsistema
183
521797
3117
Hemos contruído este sistema
09:00
where we understandentender all the partspartes of it,
184
524914
3110
del que entendemos todas sus partes
09:03
but we're usingutilizando it in a very, very differentdiferente way than we expectedesperado to use it,
185
528024
3698
pero las estamos usando de maneras muy,
muy diferentes al uso esperado
09:07
and it's gottenconseguido a very, very differentdiferente scaleescala
186
531722
2439
y está adoptando una escala
muy, muy diferente
09:10
than it was designeddiseñado for.
187
534161
2171
de esa para la que fue diseñado.
09:12
And in facthecho, nobodynadie really exactlyexactamente understandsentiende
188
536332
2676
De hecho, nadie entiende exactamente
09:14
all the things it's beingsiendo used for right now.
189
539008
2263
todos los usos que
se le está dando ahora mismo.
09:17
It's turningtorneado into one of these biggrande emergentemergente systemssistemas
190
541271
2503
Se está volviendo como esos
grandes sistemas emergentes
09:19
like the financialfinanciero systemsistema, where we'venosotros tenemos designeddiseñado all the partspartes
191
543774
3481
como el sistema financiero, del que hemos
diseñado todas sus partes
09:23
but nobodynadie really exactlyexactamente understandsentiende
192
547255
2606
pero nadie entiende cabalmente
09:25
how it operatesopera and all the little detailsdetalles of it
193
549861
3227
su funcionamiento, todos
sus pequeños detalles
09:28
and what kindsclases of emergentemergente behaviorscomportamientos it can have.
194
553088
2719
y qué comportamientos
emergentes pueden tener.
09:31
And so if you hearoír an expertexperto talkinghablando about the InternetInternet
195
555807
3133
Así que si escuchan a un experto
hablar de Internet
09:34
and sayingdiciendo it can do this, or it does do this, or it will do that,
196
558940
2695
y dice que puede hacer esto,
o que hace esto, o que hará aquello,
09:37
you should treattratar it with the samemismo skepticismescepticismo
197
561635
2461
deberían tratarlo
con el mismo escepticismo
09:39
that you mightpodría treattratar the commentscomentarios of an economisteconomista about the economyeconomía
198
564096
4415
con el que toman los comentarios
de un economista que habla de economía
09:44
or a weathermanmeteorólogo about the weatherclima, or something like that.
199
568511
2267
o un pronosticador que habla del tiempo,
o algo por el estilo.
09:46
They have an informedinformado opinionopinión,
200
570778
2648
Tienen una opinión experta
09:49
but it's changingcambiando so quicklycon rapidez that even the expertsexpertos
201
573426
2541
pero todo cambia tan rápido
que incluso los expertos
09:51
don't know exactlyexactamente what's going on.
202
575967
1818
no saben con exactitud
lo que sucede.
09:53
So if you see one of these mapsmapas of the InternetInternet,
203
577785
2692
Así que si ven uno de
estos mapas de Internet,
09:56
it's just somebody'salguien es guessadivinar.
204
580477
1666
es sólo la conjetura de alguien.
09:58
NobodyNadie really knowssabe what the InternetInternet is right now
205
582143
2198
Nadie sabe realmente cómo
es Internet ahora mismo
10:00
because it's differentdiferente than it was an hourhora agohace.
206
584341
2741
porque es diferente de
lo que era hace una hora.
10:02
It's constantlyconstantemente changingcambiando. It's constantlyconstantemente reconfiguringreconfigurando.
207
587082
2801
Cambia constantemente.
Se reconfigura constantemente.
10:05
And the problemproblema with it is,
208
589883
1514
Y el problema con esto es que
10:07
I think we are settingajuste ourselvesNosotros mismos up for a kindtipo of disasterdesastre
209
591397
3341
creo que estamos preparando
una especie de desastre
10:10
like the disasterdesastre we had in the financialfinanciero systemsistema,
210
594738
2795
como el que tuvimos
en el sistema financiero
10:13
where we take a systemsistema that's basicallybásicamente builtconstruido on trustconfianza,
211
597533
5344
en el que tomamos un sistema construido
básicamente sobre la confiaza,
10:18
was basicallybásicamente builtconstruido for a smaller-scalea menor escala systemsistema,
212
602877
2621
pensado para un sistema a pequeña escala,
10:21
and we'venosotros tenemos kindtipo of expandedexpandido it way beyondmás allá the limitslímites
213
605498
2909
y lo expandimos mucho más allá de los límites
10:24
of how it was meantsignificado to operatefuncionar.
214
608407
1996
para los que fue pensado.
10:26
And so right now, I think it's literallyliteralmente truecierto
215
610403
3268
De modo que ahora,
creo que es literalmente cierto
10:29
that we don't know what the consequencesConsecuencias
216
613671
3505
que no sabemos cuáles
serían las consecuencias
10:33
of an effectiveeficaz denial-of-servicenegación de servicio attackataque
217
617176
2434
de un ataque certero
por denegación de servicio
10:35
on the InternetInternet would be,
218
619610
1773
sobre Internet
10:37
and whateverlo que sea it would be is going to be worsepeor nextsiguiente yearaño,
219
621383
1874
y, cualquiera fuere,
será peor el año próximo
10:39
and worsepeor nextsiguiente yearaño, and so on.
220
623257
1408
y peor el siguiente, etc.
10:40
But so what we need is a planplan B.
221
624665
2549
Por eso necesitamos un plan B.
10:43
There is no planplan B right now.
222
627214
1632
Hoy no hay un plan B.
10:44
There's no clearclaro backupapoyo systemsistema that we'venosotros tenemos very carefullycuidadosamente keptmantenido
223
628846
3503
No hay ningún sistema de respaldo claro
que hayamos mantenido con mucho cuidado
10:48
to be independentindependiente of the InternetInternet,
224
632349
1946
para independizarnos de Internet,
10:50
madehecho out of completelycompletamente differentdiferente setsconjuntos of buildingedificio blocksbloques.
225
634295
3066
que esté construido completamente
por distintos bloques constitutivos.
10:53
So what we need is something that doesn't necessarilynecesariamente
226
637361
3013
Necesitamos algo que no necesariamente
10:56
have to have the performanceactuación of the InternetInternet,
227
640374
2734
tiene que tener el rendimiento de Internet,
10:59
but the policepolicía departmentDepartamento has to be ablepoder
228
643108
1517
pero el departamento de policía tiene que poder
11:00
to call up the firefuego departmentDepartamento even withoutsin the InternetInternet,
229
644625
2523
llamar a los bomberos incluso sin Internet
11:03
or the hospitalshospitales have to orderorden fuelcombustible oilpetróleo.
230
647148
2565
o los hospitales poder pedir combustible.
11:05
This doesn't need to be a multi-billion-dollarmultimillonario governmentgobierno projectproyecto.
231
649713
4614
Esto no tiene que ser un proyecto
gubernamental de miles de millones.
11:10
It's actuallyactualmente relativelyrelativamente simplesencillo to do, technicallytécnicamente,
232
654327
2748
Técnicamente es relativamente fácil de hacer
11:12
because it can use existingexistente fibersfibras that are in the groundsuelo,
233
657075
3802
porque se puede usar las redes
de fibras que hay en el terreno
11:16
existingexistente wirelessinalámbrico infrastructureinfraestructura.
234
660877
1959
y la infraestructura
inalámbrica existente.
11:18
It's basicallybásicamente a matterimportar of decidingdecidiendo to do it.
235
662836
2765
Sólo es cuestión de decidir hacerlo.
11:21
But people won'tcostumbre decidedecidir to do it
236
665601
2484
Pero no se toma la decisión de hacerlo
11:23
untilhasta they recognizereconocer the need for it,
237
668085
2379
hasta que no se reconoce
la necesidad de hacerlo
11:26
and that's the problemproblema that we have right now.
238
670464
1498
y ese es el problema
que tenemos ahora mismo.
11:27
So there's been plentymucho of people,
239
671962
2783
Ha habido muchas personas,
11:30
plentymucho of us have been quietlytranquilamente arguingdiscutiendo
240
674745
3044
muchos de nosotros
hemos planteado en silencio
11:33
that we should have this independentindependiente systemsistema for yearsaños,
241
677789
2918
la necesidad de un sistema
independiente durante años,
11:36
but it's very harddifícil to get people focusedcentrado on planplan B
242
680707
3009
pero es muy difícil hacer que
la gente se centre en un plan B
11:39
when planplan A seemsparece to be workingtrabajando so well.
243
683716
3674
si el plan A parece funcionar tan bien.
11:43
So I think that, if people understandentender
244
687390
3429
Así que creo que si la gente entiende
11:46
how much we're startingcomenzando to dependdepender on the InternetInternet,
245
690819
3054
lo mucho que estamos
empezando a depender de Internet
11:49
and how vulnerablevulnerable it is,
246
693873
1977
y cuán vulnerable es eso,
11:51
we could get focusedcentrado on
247
695850
2106
podríamos focalizarnos
11:53
just wantingfalto this other systemsistema to existexiste,
248
697956
3024
en crear estos otros sistemas,
11:56
and I think if enoughsuficiente people say, "Yeah, I would like to use it,
249
700980
3077
y creo que si hay suficientes personas
que digan: "Sí, lo usaría;
11:59
I'd like to have suchtal a systemsistema," then it will get builtconstruido.
250
704057
3010
me gustaría tener un sistema así",
entonces se construiría.
12:02
It's not that harddifícil a problemproblema.
251
707067
1423
No es un problema tan difícil.
12:04
It could definitelyseguro be donehecho by people in this roomhabitación.
252
708490
3235
Definitivamente, lo podría
hacer la gente de esta sala.
12:07
And so I think that this is actuallyactualmente,
253
711725
4359
Y creo que este es en realidad,
12:11
of all the problemsproblemas you're going to hearoír about at the conferenceconferencia,
254
716084
3179
de todos los problemas que
van a oír en esta conferencia,
12:15
this is probablyprobablemente one of the very easiestmás fácil to fixfijar.
255
719263
2678
este probablemente sea
el más fácil de resolver.
12:17
So I'm happycontento to get a chanceoportunidad to tell you about it.
