ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Aparna Rao - Artist
A part of the Bangalore-based artist duo Pors & Rao, TED Senior Fellow Aparna Rao works with electro-mechanical systems and interactive installations.

Why you should listen

With the clever use of technology, TED Fellow Aparna Rao creates art installations that let people experience familiar objects and interactions in refreshingly humorous ways. From her sound-sensative "Pygmies" to her 2-person "Uncle Phone," Rao's work encourages participation rather than spectatorship. By combining high-tech and high-art, she imbues her creations with playful expression and quirky behaviors.

Rao studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India, and at Interaction Design Institute in Italy. In 2005 she partnered with Soren Pors and they've worked in collaboration ever since as Pors & Rao.

So here'saquí está a videovídeo.

Aquí hay un video.

You have to imagineimagina the other handmano.

But to us, we're sortordenar of tryingmolesto to evokeevocar

03:27
The nextsiguiente work is DecoySeñuelo.
81
195394
2160
El siguiente trabajo
es Decoy [Señuelo].
03:29
This is a cardboardcartulina modelmodelo, so the objectobjeto

197554
1788
Este es un modelo de cartón,
por lo que el objeto
03:31
is about as tallalto as I am.
83
199342
1904
es tan alto como yo.
03:33
It has a roundedredondeado bodycuerpo, two armsbrazos,

Tiene un cuerpo

86
205346

y su único propósito es llamar
la atención hacia sí mismo.
03:41
So when a viewerespectador passespasa by,
87
209243
1786
Así que, cuando un espectador
pasa por allí,
03:43
it sortordenar of tiltsinclina from sidelado to sidelado,

se inclina de lado a lado,

03:48
as the personpersona getsse pone closercerca.
90
216017

a medida que
la persona se acerca.
03:51
So here is the first testprueba scenarioguión.
91
219384
2524
Esta es la primera prueba.
03:53
You see the two movementsmovimientos integratedintegrado,
92

1889
Ven los dos movimientos integrados,
03:55
and the objectobjeto seemsparece to be employingempleando

y el objeto parece emplear
03:57
its entiretodo beingsiendo in this expressionexpresión of desperationdesesperación.
94
225786
5072
todo su ser en esta expresión
de desesperación.
04:02
But the ideaidea is that onceuna vez it's
got the person'spersona attentionatención,
95
230858
2664
Pero una vez que obtiene
la atención de la persona,
04:05
it's no longermás interestedinteresado, and it looksmiradas for the nextsiguiente personpersona whosecuyo attentionatención to get.
96
233522

ya no le interesa y busca

04:09
(LaughterRisa)

(Risas)
04:12
So this is the finalfinal fabricatedfabricado bodycuerpo of the DecoySeñuelo.
98
240708
3032
Así que este es el cuerpo fabricado
del Decoy, versión final.
04:15
It appearsaparece to be mass-manufacturedfabricado en masa
99

2117
Parece ser fabricado en masa,

04:21
Because we are always workingtrabajando
102

1503
Como siempre trabajamos
04:23
from a very personalpersonal spaceespacio,
103

desde un lugar muy personal,
04:24
we like how this consumerconsumidor aestheticestético
104

2427
nos gusta cómo esta

04:27
sortordenar of depersonalizesdespersonaliza the objectobjeto
105
255174
2072
tiende a despersonalizar el objeto
04:29
and givesda us a bitpoco of distancedistancia
106

y nos da un poco de distancia,
04:30
in its appearanceapariencia, at leastmenos.
107
258977

en apariencia, por lo menos.
04:32
And so to us this is a kindtipo of sinistersiniestro beingsiendo

Para nosotros es

04:35
whichcual is tryingmolesto to distractdistraer you from the things

but it could alsoademás be a figurefigura that needsnecesariamente a lot of help.
111

04:43
The nextsiguiente work is an objectobjeto,

El siguiente trabajo es un objeto,
04:45
that's alsoademás a kindtipo of soundsonar instrumentinstrumento.

que también es una especie

04:48
In the shapeforma of an amphitheateranfiteatro

04:54
So from where I'm standingen pie,

Desde donde estoy,
04:55
eachcada of you appearsaparece to be this biggrande,
118

ustedes parecen

04:57
and the audienceaudiencia sortordenar of takes the entiretodo

05:01
SeatedSentado in this audienceaudiencia are 996 smallpequeña figuresfiguras.

por su propia voluntad.
05:09
This meansmedio that eachcada of them can decidedecidir
124
297374

Esto significa que
cada uno puede decidir
05:11
if and when they want to clapaplaudir,

si quiere aplaudir,

05:22
So when the viewerespectador stepspasos in frontfrente of the audienceaudiencia,

Cuando el espectador

05:24
there will be a responserespuesta.

330680
1962
Así que nosotros
realmente vemos
05:44
at an audienceaudiencia as its ownpropio objectobjeto
138
332642
2297
al público
como un objeto
05:46
or its ownpropio organismorganismo
139
334939
1716
o como un organismo
05:48
that's alsoademás got a sortordenar of musical-likecomo musical qualitycalidad to it,
140
336655
3750
que también tiene
cierta cualidad musical,
05:52
an instrumentinstrumento.
141
340405
1380
un instrumento.
05:53
So the viewerespectador can playjugar it
142
341785
1756
El espectador
puede tocarlo
05:55
by elicitingprovocando quitebastante complexcomplejo and variedvariado,
143

provocando matices musicales

144
345977

bastante complejos y variados,
06:00
but cannotno poder really provokeprovocar the audienceaudiencia

pero no puede

06:02

146

ningún tipo de

06:05
So there's a sensesentido of judgmentjuicio and capriciousnesscapricho
147
353337
2744
Así que hay una sensación
de crítica, capricho
06:08
and uneasinessinquietud involvedinvolucrado.
148
356081
2241
e inquietud en todo esto.
06:10
It alsoademás has an alluringseductor and trap-likecomo una trampa qualitycalidad to it.
149
358322
4109
También tiene una cualidad
seductora, como de trampa.
06:14
So here if you see we're quitebastante excitedemocionado about
150
362431
2120
Así que ya ven que estamos
muy entusiasmados
06:16
the imageimagen of the headcabeza splittingterrible

151
364551
3822
con la imagen de la cabeza que
se divide para formar dos manos.
06:20
So here'saquí está a smallpequeña visualvisual animationanimación,
152
368373
1911
Aquí tenemos
una pequeña animación,
06:22
as if the two sideslados of the braincerebro are sortordenar of clashingchocando
153
370284
4332
como si los dos lados del cerebro
estuvieran chocando
06:26
againsten contra eachcada other to kindtipo of make sensesentido

para darle un sentido
06:28
of the dualitydualidad and the tensiontensión.
155
376643
2535
a la dualidad y la tensión.
06:31
And here is a prototypeprototipo.
156
379178
2568
Este es un prototipo.
06:33
So we can't wait to be engulfedengullido by 996 of them.
157
381746
4802
Así que no podemos esperar a
ser devorados por 996 de ellos.
06:38
Okay, this is the last work.
It's calledllamado the FramerunnersFramerunners.
158
386548
3003
Bueno, este es el último trabajo.
Se titula: Los Framerunners
[Los corredores del marco]
06:41
It comesproviene out of the ideaidea of a windowventana.
159
389551
2519
La idea surge de una ventana.
06:44
This is an actualreal windowventana in our studioestudio,
160
392070
2311
Esta es la ventana real
de nuestro estudio,
06:46
and as you can see, it's madehecho up of threeTres
161
394381
1918
y como pueden ver, está
compuesta por tres secciones
06:48
differentdiferente thicknessesespesores of woodende madera sectionssecciones.
162
396299
2282
de diferentes espesores
de madera.
06:50
So we used the samemismo windowventana vocabularyvocabulario
163
398581
2273
Usamos el vocabulario
de las ventanas
06:52
to constructconstruir our ownpropio framemarco or gridcuadrícula
164
400854
2827
para construir nuestro
propio marco
06:55
that's suspendedsuspendido in the roomhabitación and that can

403681
1942
lo colgamos en la sala y
se puede ver desde ambos lados.
06:57
be viewedvisto from two sideslados.
166
405623
1813
06:59
This gridcuadrícula is inhabitedpoblado by a tribetribu of smallpequeña figuresfiguras.
167
407436
2974
Este marco está habitado
por una tribu de pequeñas figuras.
07:02
They're alsoademás madehecho up of threeTres differentdiferente sizestamaños,
168
410410
2565
Hechas también en tres
tamaños diferentes,
07:04
as if to suggestsugerir a kindtipo of perspectiveperspectiva
169
412975
2426
para sugerir un poco
de perspectiva
07:07
or landscapepaisaje on the singlesoltero plainllanura.
170
415401
2711
o de paisaje
en un único plano.
07:10
EachCada of these figuresfiguras can alsoademás runcorrer backwardhacia atrás
171
418112
2445
Estas figuras también
pueden correr hacia atrás
07:12
and forwardadelante in the trackpista
172
420557
1565
y hacia adelante en el marco
07:14
and hideesconder behinddetrás two adjacentadyacente trackspistas.
173
422122
3557
y esconderse detrás de
marcos adyacentes.
07:17
So in contrastcontraste to this very tightapretado gridcuadrícula,
174
425679
2110
En contraste con
este rígido marco,
07:19
we wanted to give these figuresfiguras a very comicalcómico
175
427789
2421
queríamos darle a estas figuras
una disposición cómica,
07:22
and slapstick-likecomo una bufonada qualitycalidad,
176
430210
2089
como si fueran payasos,
07:24
as if a puppeteertitiritero has takentomado them
177
432299
1839
y un titiritero
las hubiera tomado
07:26
and physicallyfísicamente animatedanimado them down the pathcamino.
178
434138
2741
y las animara en persona
por el camino.
07:28
So we like the ideaidea of these figuresfiguras
179
436879
2280
Nos gustan estas figuras
07:31
sortordenar of skippingsalto a la comba alonga lo largo
180
439159
1536
saltando por todos lados
07:32
like they're obliviousinconsciente de and carefreedespreocupado
181
440695
2088
como ajenos a todo,
sin preocupaciones,
07:34
and happy-go-luckyfeliz-afortunado and contentcontenido,
182
442783
2548
así, despreocupados y contentos,
07:37
untilhasta they sortordenar of sensesentido a movementmovimiento from the viewerespectador
183

07:40
and they will hideesconder behinddetrás the fastestlo más rápido wallpared.
184
448531
4268
y se esconden detrás de
la pared rápidamente.
07:44
So to us, this work alsoademás presentspresenta
its ownpropio contradictioncontradicción.
185
452799
3834
Esta obra presenta
su propia contradicción.
Estas figuras están
como atrapadas
07:48
These figuresfiguras are sortordenar of entrappedatrapado
186
456633
1824
07:50
withindentro this very strongfuerte gridcuadrícula,
187
458457
2147
dentro de un marco
muy rígido,
07:52
whichcual is like a prisonprisión, but alsoademás a fortressfortaleza,
188
460604
2756
que es como una prisión,
pero también una fortaleza,
07:55
because it allowspermite them to be obliviousinconsciente de
189
463360

07:57

08:02
So all these realreal life qualitiescalidades that I talk about

Todas estas caraterísticas
de la vida real
08:05
are sortordenar of translatedtraducido to a very specificespecífico

se traducen en una

08:14
So you see they extractedextraído the motionmovimiento cogsengranajes

Ya ven que extrajeron
