ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Arthur Benjamin - Mathemagician
Using daring displays of algorithmic trickery, lightning calculator and number wizard Arthur Benjamin mesmerizes audiences with mathematical mystery and beauty.

Why you should listen

Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of math at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage in his tuxedo to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding math stunts. It's part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.

Benjamin is the co-author, with Michael Shermer, of Secrets of Mental Math (which shares his secrets for rapid mental calculation), as well as the co-author of the MAA award-winning Proofs That Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof. For a glimpse of his broad approach to math, see the list of research talks on his website, which seesaws between high-level math (such as his "Vandermonde's Determinant and Fibonacci SAWs," presented at MIT in 2004) and engaging math talks for the rest of us ("An Amazing Mathematical Card Trick").

13:50
So, withoutsin any more stallingestancamiento,

Así que, sin más dilación,
13:53
here we go.
332
821000
3000
allá vamos.
13:56
I'll startcomienzo the problemproblema in the middlemedio, with 57 timesveces 683.
333
824000
2000
Empezaré por la mitad, multiplicando 57 por 683.
13:58
Now, 57 timesveces 68 is 3,400, plusmás 476 is 3876,
334
826000
3000
57 por 68 es 3.400, más 476 es 3.876,
14:01
that's 38,760 plusmás 171,
335
829000
3000
eso nos da 38.760 más 171.
14:04
38,760 plusmás 171 is 38,931.
336
832000
3000
38.760 más 171 es 38.931.
14:07
38,931; doubledoble that to get 77,862.
337
835000
4000
38.760; el doble es 77,862.
14:11
77,862 becomesse convierte cookieGalleta fissionfisión,
338
839000
2000
77.862 se convierte en fisión de galletas ("cookie fission"),
14:13
cookieGalleta fissionfisión is 77,822.
339
841000
4000
fisión de galletas es 77.822.
14:17
That seemsparece right, I'll go on. CookieGalleta fissionfisión, OK.
340
845000
2000
Parece que vamos bien, sigo. Fisión de galletas. Vale.
14:19
NextSiguiente, I do 57 squaredcuadrado, whichcual is 3,249, so I can say,
341
847000
4000
Seguimos, el cuadrado de 57, es 3.249, así que podemos decir,
14:23
threeTres billionmil millones. Take the 249, addañadir that to cookieGalleta, 249,
342
851000
5000
mil millones. Cojo el 249, lo añado a la galleta, 249,
14:28
oopsUy, but I see a carryllevar comingviniendo --
343

2000
¡uy!, esto que nos llevamos...
14:30
249 --
344
858000
2000
249...
14:32
addañadir that to cookieGalleta, 250 plusmás 77,
345
860000
2000
y añado eso a la galleta, 250 más 77,
14:34
is 327 millionmillón --
346
862000
4000
da 327 millones...
14:38
fissionfisión, fissionfisión, OK, finallyfinalmente, we do 683 squaredcuadrado,
347
866000
2000
fisión, fisión, vale, ahora, el cuadrado de 683,
14:41
that's 700 timesveces 666, plusmás 17 squaredcuadrado
348
869000
2000
eso es 700 veces 666, más el cuadrado de 17,
14:43
is 466,489, revRdo up if I need it,
349
871000
3000
que nos da 466.489, revisar si lo necesito,
14:46
revRdo up, take the 466,
350
874000
2000
revisar, cojo el 466,
14:48
addañadir that to fissionfisión, to get,
351
876000
2000
lo añado a la fisión para conseguir...
14:50
oh geeCaramba --
352
878000
