ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ge Wang - Music technologist
Both a musician and a computer scientist, Ge Wang turns ordinary MacBooks and iPhones into complex instruments.

Why you should listen

Ge Wang explores the intersection of technology and music, researching how programming languages and interactive software systems can push computer music from coded beeps and tones to something that musicians can actively play in the moment. An Associate Professor at Stanford University, Wang is the founding director of both the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk) and the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPho). He was named a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 2016 and is the author of Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime -- a 488-page, full-color comic book about design as the art of humanizing technology (Stanford University Press, 2018).

Wang is also the man behind ChucK, a programming language built specifically for sound. He also co-founded Smule, a startup dedicated to musical apps that let people around the world make beautiful music … and connect with each other in the process. Wang is the designer of Ocarina, which turns your iPhone into an ancient flute.

And I think we'llbien beginempezar with just this questionpregunta:
23

Empezaré con esta pregunta:
01:13
What is computercomputadora musicmúsica?
24
61283
1337
¿Qué es la música informática?
01:14
And I'm going to try to do my

25
62620
3780
Trataré de dar una definición
01:18
maybe by tellingnarración you a storyhistoria
26
66400
1731
quizá contando una historia
01:20
that goesva throughmediante some of the stuffcosas

que repasa algunas cosas en las que
01:21
I've been workingtrabajando on.

01:23
And the first thing, I think, in our storyhistoria
29

1812
Lo primero en esta historia
01:25
is going to be something calledllamado ChucKArrojar.
30
73516
2548
será algo llamado ChucK.
01:28
Now, ChucKArrojar is a programmingprogramación languageidioma for musicmúsica,
31
76064
5373
ChucK es un lenguaje de
programación para hacer música;
01:33
and it's open-sourcefuente abierta, it's freelylibremente availabledisponible,
32
81437
2709
es de código abierto, de libre acceso,
01:36
and I like to think that it crasheschoques equallyIgualmente well

01:40
And insteaden lugar of tellingnarración you more about it,
35

Y en vez de contarles más sobre esto,
01:43
I'm just going to give you a demomanifestación.
36
91370

les daré una demo.
01:45
By the way, I'm just going to nerdempollón out
37
93196
1156
Por cierto, tendremos
una actividad nerd
01:46
for just a fewpocos minutesminutos here,
38
94352
1629
durante los próximos minutos
01:47
so I would say, don't freakmonstruo out.
39
95981
2798
así que les pido que no se asusten.
01:50
In facthecho, I would inviteinvitación all of you to joinunirse me
40

2071
De hecho, los invitaría a sumarse
01:52
in just geekinggeeking out.
41
100850

a esta actividad geek.
01:54
If you've never writtenescrito a linelínea
of codecódigo before in your life,
42
102034
3062
Si nunca han escrito una
línea de código en su vida,
01:57
do not worrypreocupación.
43
105096
1186
no se preocupen.
01:58
I'll betapuesta you'lltu vas a be ablepoder to come alonga lo largo on this.
44
106282
3517
Apostaré a que saldrán
adelante con esto.
02:01
First thing I'm going to do is to make
45
109799
1419
Empezaré haciendo
02:03
a sineseno waveola oscillatoroscilador,
46
111218
1833
un oscilador de onda sinusoidal,
02:05
and we're going to calledllamado the sineseno waveola generatorgenerador
47
113051
3034
y lo llamaremos generador
de onda sinusoidal
02:08
"GeGe."
48
116085
2762
"Ge".
02:10
And then we're going to connectconectar "GeGe" to the DACDAC.
49
118847
2090
Luego conectaremos "Ge" a la DAC.
02:12
Now this is kindtipo of the abstractionabstracción
50
120937
1154
Ahora bien, esto es una
especie de abstracción
02:14
for the soundsonar outputsalida on my computercomputadora. Okay?
51
122091
2608
de la salida de sonido
de mi computadora, ¿sí?
02:16
So I've connectedconectado myselfmí mismo into the speakeraltavoz.
52
124699
3200
Me conecté al altavoz.
02:19
NextSiguiente, I'm going to say my frequencyfrecuencia
53
127899
1592
Luego, diré que mi frecuencia
02:21
is 440 hertzhertz,
54
129491
1968
es de 440 hercios,
02:23
and I'm going to let time advanceavanzar
55
131459
3819
pondré una duración
02:27
by two secondssegundos throughmediante this operationoperación.
56
135278
2722
de 2 segundos a esta operación.
02:30
All right, so if I were to playjugar this --
57
138000
4068
Bien, si reproducimos esto...
02:34
(ToneTono) —
58
142068
2672
(Tono)
02:36
you would hearoír a sineseno waveola
at 440 hertzhertz for two secondssegundos.
59
144740
2421
escuchamos una onda sinusoidal
a 440 hercios durante 2 segundos.
02:39
Okay, great. Now I'm going to copydupdo and pastepegar this,
60
147161
3026
Muy bien. Ahora copiaré y pegaré esto,
02:42
and then just changecambio some of these numbersnúmeros,
61
150187
1744
y luego cambiaré estos números,
02:43
220.5, 440 I shalldeberá leavesalir it as that,
62
151931
3960
220.5, 440 lo dejaré como está,
02:47
and .5 and 880.
63
155891
2440
y .5 y 880.
02:50
By doublingduplicación the frequencyfrecuencia,
64
158331
1362
Al duplicar la frecuencia,
02:51
we're actuallyactualmente going up in successivesucesivo octavesoctavas,
65
159693
2517
en realidad subimos
las octavas sucesivas
02:54
and then we have this sequencesecuencia --
66
162210
1337
y entonces tenemos esta secuencia
02:55
(TonesTonos) — of tonestonos.
67
163547
2127
(Tonos) de tonos.
02:57
Okay, great, now I can imagineimagina creatingcreando
68
165674
1906
Genial, ahora puedo imaginar la creación
02:59
all kindsclases of really horriblehorrible
69
167580
1442
de todo tipo de piezas musicales
03:01
singlesoltero sineseno waveola piecespiezas of musicmúsica with this,
70
169022
2398
horribles con ondas sinusoidales
03:03
but I'm going to do something
that computersordenadores are really good at,
71
171420
2912
pero haré algo que a las
computadoras se les da muy bien,
03:06
whichcual is repetitionrepetición.
72
174332
1824
que es la repetición.
03:08
I'm going to put this all in a while looplazo,
73
176156
1704
Pondré todo esto en un bucle de control,
03:09
and you actuallyactualmente don't need to indentsangrar,
74
177860
1296
y no es necesario que dejen sangría,
03:11
but this is purelypuramente for aestheticestético reasonsrazones.
75
179156
2124
es meramente a fines estéticos.
03:13
It's good practicepráctica.
76
181280
1604
Es una buena práctica.
03:14
And when we do this —
77
182884
1580
Y al hacer esto...
03:16
(TonesTonos) —
78
184464
4497
(Tonos)
03:20
that's going to go on for a while.
79
188961
1173
esto continuará mucho tiempo.
03:22
In facthecho, it's probablyprobablemente not going to stop
80
190134
1494
De hecho, es probable que no se detenga
03:23
untilhasta this computercomputadora disintegratesse desintegra.
81
191628
1783
hasta que la computadora se desintegre.
03:25
And I can't really empiricallyempíricamente proveprobar that to you,
82
193411
2699
No puedo demostrárselos empíricamente,
03:28
but I hopeesperanza you'lltu vas a believe me when I say that.
83
196110
3669
pero espero que me crean.
03:31
NextSiguiente, I'm going to replacereemplazar this 220
84
199779
1876
Luego, reemplazaré este 220
03:33
by mathmates.randomaleatorio2f.
85
201655
2806
por math.random2f.
03:36
I'm going to generategenerar a randomaleatorio numbernúmero
86
204461
1278
Generaré un número al azar
03:37
betweenEntre 30 and 1,000 and sendenviar that
87
205739
3140
entre 30 y 1000 y enviaré eso
03:40
to the frequencyfrecuencia of me.
88
208879
2086
a mi frecuencia.
03:42
And I'm going to do this everycada halfmitad a secondsegundo.
89
210965
2100
Y haré esto cada medio segundo.
03:45
(TonesTonos)
90
213065
2942
(Tonos)
03:48
Let's do this everycada 200 millisecondsmilisegundos.
91
216007
2661
Hagamos eso cada 200 milisegundos.
03:50
(TonesTonos)
92

(Tonos)
03:55
One hundredcien.

03:56
(TonesTonos)
94
224745
1612
(Tonos)
03:58
All right.
95
226357
1234
Está bien.
03:59
At this pointpunto, we'venosotros tenemos reachedalcanzado something
96
227591
1944
A esta altura, hemos logrado algo
04:01
that I would like to think of as
97
229535
1070
que daría en llamar
04:02
the canonicalcanónico computercomputadora musicmúsica.
98
230605
4021
"música informática canónica".
04:06
This is, to me, the soundsonar that mainframesmainframes
99
234626
3817
Esto, para mí, es el
sonido que supuestamente
04:10
are supposedsupuesto to be makingfabricación
100
238443
1122
hacen los mainframes
04:11
when they're thinkingpensando really harddifícil.
101
239565
3242
cuando piensan mucho.
04:14
It's this soundsonar, it's like,
102
242807
2093
Un sonido como para calcular
04:16
the squarecuadrado rootraíz of fivecinco millionmillón.
103
244900
3571
la raíz cuadrada de cinco millones.
04:22
So is this computercomputadora musicmúsica?
104
250427
3784
¿Esto es música informática?
04:26
Yeah, I guessadivinar by definitiondefinición,
105
254211
1979
Sí, supongo que por definición
04:28
it's kindtipo of computercomputadora musicmúsica.
106
256190
1205
es música informática.
04:29
It's probablyprobablemente not the kindtipo of musicmúsica you would listen to
107
257395
3008
Quizá no sea el tipo de
música que uno escucharía
04:32
cruisingcrucero down the highwayautopista,
108
260403
1488
en la carretera
04:33
but it's a foundationFundación of computer-generatedgenerado por computadora musicmúsica,
109

pero es la base de
la música informática,
04:38
and usingutilizando ChucKArrojar,
110
266907
2203
y, con ChucK,
04:41
we'venosotros tenemos actuallyactualmente been buildingedificio instrumentsinstrumentos

04:48
Now the LaptopOrdenador portátil OrchestraOrquesta is an ensembleconjunto of laptopslaptops,

La Laptop Orchestra

04:54
Now the reasonrazón we have these
116
282312
1597
La razón de ser de estos altavoces
04:55
is so that for the instrumentsinstrumentos that we createcrear
117
283909
2470
es que queremos que los
instrumentos que creamos
04:58
out of the laptopordenador portátil, we want the soundsonar to come
118
286379
2224
con la laptop... queremos
que el sonido provenga

al instrumento
05:03

120

y al ejecutante,
05:04
kindtipo of much like a traditionaltradicional, acousticacústico instrumentinstrumento.
121
292491
2702
de igual manera que un instrumento
acústico tradicional.
05:07
Like, if I were to playjugar a violinviolín here,
122
295193
1886
Al igual que, si tocara el violín aquí,
05:09
the soundsonar would naturallynaturalmente not come out of
123
297079
2111
el sonido, naturalmente, no saldría
05:11
the P.A. systemsistema, but from the artifactartefacto itselfsí mismo.
124
299190

del sistema de audio,
sino del propio instrumento.
05:13
So these speakersparlantes are meantsignificado to emulateemular that.
125
301964
3207
Estos altavoces se diseñaron
para emular eso.
05:17
In facthecho, I'm going to showespectáculo you
126
305171
1329
De hecho, les mostraré
05:18
how we actuallyactualmente builtconstruido them.
127
306500
2743
cómo los construimos.
05:21
The first steppaso is to go to IKEAIKEA
128
309243
2064
El primer paso es ir a IKEA
05:23
and buycomprar a saladensalada bowlcuenco.
129
311307
1380
y comprar una ensaladera.
05:24
This is an 11-inch-pulgada BlandaBlanda MattMate.
130
312687
3230
Esta es la Blanda Matt de 11 pulgadas.
05:27
That's the actualreal namenombre,
131
315917
1498
Ese es el nombre real,
05:29
and I actuallyactualmente use one of these
132
317415
1422
y yo uso una de esas
05:30
to make saladensalada at home as well, I kidniño you not.
133
318837
2228
también para hacer ensalada
en casa, no es broma.
05:33
And the first steppaso is you turngiro it upsideboca arriba down,
134
321065
3171
Y el primer paso es darla vuelta,
05:36
and then you drillperforar holesagujeros in them,

luego practicarle agujeros,
05:38

05:42
put carcoche speakeraltavoz driversconductores in them

colocarle controladores

139

poner todo eso junto y obtener
05:49
these hemisphericalhemisférico speakeraltavoz arraysmatrices.
141
337559

estas matrices de altavoces hemisféricos.
05:51
AddAñadir people, addañadir laptopslaptops,

Añadimos personas y laptops
05:52
you have a laptopordenador portátil orchestraorquesta.
143
340896

y tenemos la orquesta de laptops.
05:55
And what mightpodría a laptopordenador portátil orchestraorquesta soundsonar like?

So I think a good questionpregunta to askpedir about OcarinaOcarina is,
251
739750
3996
Creo que una buena pregunta
para hacerse sobre Ocarina
12:35
is this a toyjuguete or it an instrumentinstrumento? Maybe it's bothambos,
252
743746
4747
es si es un juguete o un instrumento.
Quizá sea ambas cosas.
12:40
but for me, I think the more importantimportante questionpregunta is,

Pero, para mí, creo que
la pregunta más importante
12:42
is it expressiveexpresivo?

es si es expresiva.
12:44
And at the samemismo time, I think

Y, al mismo tiempo, pienso
12:46
creatingcreando these typestipos of instrumentsinstrumentos
256

No creo que realmente

13:07
You know, this is before radioradio, before recordinggrabación.
267
775337

Ya saben, esto fue antes de

13:09
In the last hundredcien yearsaños, with all this technologytecnología,
268

En los últimos cien años,
con toda esta tecnología,
13:11
we now have more accessacceso to musicmúsica

ahora tenemos más acceso a la música
13:13
as listenersoyentes and consumersconsumidores,

como oyentes y consumidores,
13:15
but somehowde algun modo, I think we're makingfabricación lessMenos musicmúsica

pero de alguna manera, creo que
estamos haciendo menos música
13:18
than ever before.
272
786084
1686
que nunca antes.
13:19
I'm not sure why that would be.
273
787770

No estoy seguro del porqué.
13:21
Maybe it's because it's too easyfácil just to hitgolpear playjugar.

13:24
And while listeningescuchando to musicmúsica is wonderfulmaravilloso,

Y si bien escuchar música

13:26
there's a specialespecial joyalegría to makingfabricación musicmúsica

hacer la propia música genera

un placer especial.
13:31
And I think that's one partparte

Y pienso que parte
13:32
of the goalGol of why I do what I do
279

del objetivo de hacer lo que hago
