ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stefan Sagmeister - Graphic designer
Renowned for album covers, posters and his recent book of life lessons, designer Stefan Sagmeister invariably has a slightly different way of looking at things.

Why you should listen

Stefan Sagmeister is no mere commercial gun for hire. Sure, he's created eye-catching graphics for clients including the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, but he pours his heart and soul into every piece of work. His design work is at once timeless and of the moment, and his painstaking attention to the smallest details creates work that offers something new every time you look at it.

While a sense of humor invariably surfaces in his designs, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work; his intimate approach and sincere thoughtfulness elevate his design. A genuine maverick, Sagmeister achieved notoriety in the 1990s as the designer who self-harmed in the name of craft: He created a poster advertising a speaking engagement by carving the salient details onto his torso.

00:31
And at the time I was very superstitioussupersticioso.

En esa época yo era muy supersticioso.
00:35
So, uponsobre landingaterrizaje -- this was still at the oldantiguo HongHong KongKong airportaeropuerto

00:43
I thought, "If I see something good, I'm going to have a great time here in

5

00:56
So the planeavión landedaterrizado in betweenEntre the buildingsedificios

2000
00:58
and got to a fullcompleto stop in frontfrente of this little billboardcartelera.
7

1000
(Risas)
01:06
And I actuallyactualmente wentfuimos to see some of the designdiseño companiescompañías
9
42000
4000
01:10
in HongHong KongKong in my staypermanecer there.
10
46000
2000
en Hong Kong durante mi estancia
01:12
And it turnedconvertido out that --
11
48000
2000
y resultó que --
01:14
I just wentfuimos to see, you know, what they are doing in HongHong KongKong.
12
50000
5000
01:19
But I actuallyactualmente walkedcaminado away with a great jobtrabajo offeroferta.
13
55000
4000
01:23
And I flewvoló back to AustriaAustria, packedlleno my bagspantalón,
14
59000
4000
Y volví a Austria, hice mis maletas.
01:27
and, anotherotro weeksemana laterluego, I was again on my way to HongHong KongKong
15
63000
6000
01:33
still superstitionssupersticiones and thinkingpensando, "Well, if that 'Winner''Ganador' billboardcartelera is still up,
16
69000
7000
01:40
I'm going to have a good time workingtrabajando here.
17
76000
2000
01:42
(LaughterRisa)
18
78000
1000
(Risas)
01:43
But if it's goneido, it's going to be really miserablemiserable and stressfullleno de tensión."
19
79000
6000
01:49
So it turnedconvertido out that not only was the billboardcartelera still up
20
85000
4000
01:53
but they had put this one right nextsiguiente to it.
21
89000
2000
sino que habían puesto éste al lado.
01:55
(LaughterRisa)
22
91000
3000
(Risas)
01:58
On the other handmano, it alsoademás taughtenseñó me where superstitionsuperstición getsse pone me
23
94000
4000
02:02
because I really had a terribleterrible time in HongHong KongKong.
24
98000
2000
02:04
(LaughterRisa)
25
100000
3000
(Risas)
02:07
Howeversin embargo, I did have a numbernúmero of realreal momentsmomentos of happinessfelicidad in my life --
26
103000
11000
02:18
of, you know, I think what the conferenceconferencia brochurefolleto refersse refiere to
27
114000
5000
02:23
as "momentsmomentos that take your breathaliento away."
28
119000
3000
momentos que te quitan la respiración.
02:26
And sinceya que I'm a biggrande listlista makerfabricante, I actuallyactualmente listedlistado them all.
29
122000
7000
02:33
(LaughterRisa)
30
129000
1000
(Risas)
02:34
Now, you don't have to go throughmediante the troubleproblema of readingleyendo them
31
130000
3000
02:37
and I won'tcostumbre readleer them for you.
32
133000
3000
y yo no lo voy a leer para ustedes.
02:40
I know that it's incrediblyincreíblemente boringaburrido to hearoír about other people'sla gente happinessesFelicidades.
33
136000
4000
02:44
(LaughterRisa)
34
140000
2000
(Risas)
02:46
What I did do, thoughaunque is, I actuallyactualmente lookedmirado at them from a designdiseño standpointpunto de vista
35
142000
9000
02:55
and just eliminatedeliminado all the onesunos that had nothing to do with designdiseño.
36
151000
6000
03:01
And, very surprisinglyasombrosamente, over halfmitad of them had, actuallyactualmente, something to do with designdiseño.
37
157000
7000
03:08
So there are, of coursecurso, two differentdiferente possibilitiesposibilidades.
38
164000
3000
Así que hay, por supuesto, dos opciones.
03:11
There's one from a consumer'sconsumidor pointpunto of viewver --
39
167000
2000
03:13
where I was happycontento while experiencingexperimentar designdiseño.
40
169000
3000
03:16
And I'll just give you one exampleejemplo. I had gottenconseguido my first WalkmanWalkman.
41
172000
4000
Y les daré un ejemplo. Había recibido mi primer Walkman.
03:20
This is 1983.
42
176000
2000
En 1983.
03:22
My brotherhermano had this great YamahaYamaha motorcyclemotocicleta
43
178000
3000
Mi hermano tenía su gran moto Yamaha
03:25
that he was willingcomplaciente to borrowpedir prestado to me freelylibremente.
44
181000
3000
que estaba dispuesto a prestarme libremente.
03:28
And The Police'sPolicía "SynchronicitySincronicidad"
45
184000
3000
Y el casete de "Synchronicity" de Police
03:31
cassettecasete had just been releasedliberado
46
187000
2000
que justo acababa de salir
03:33
and there was no helmetcasco lawley in my hometownciudad natal of BregenzBregenz.
47
189000
3000
03:36
So you could drivemanejar up into the mountainsmontañas
48
192000
2000
Así que podía conducir por las montañas
03:38
freelylibremente blastingvoladura The PolicePolicía on the newnuevo SonySony WalkmanWalkman.
49
194000
4000
disfrutando libremente a The Police en el nuevo Sony Walkman.
03:42
(LaughterRisa)
50
198000
1000
(Risas)
03:43
And I rememberrecuerda it as a truecierto momentmomento of happinessfelicidad.
51
199000
5000
03:48
You know, of coursecurso, they are relatedrelacionado to this combinationcombinación of
52
204000
5000
03:53
at leastmenos two of them beingsiendo, you know, designdiseño objectsobjetos.
53
209000
4000
de al menos dos objetos de diseño.
03:57
And, you know, there's a scaleescala of happinessfelicidad when you talk about in designdiseño
54
213000
4000
04:01
but the motorcyclemotocicleta incidentincidente would definitelyseguro be, you know,
55
217000
4000
04:05
situatedsituado somewherealgun lado here -- right in there betweenEntre DelightDeleite and Blissfelicidad.
56
221000
6000
04:11
Now, there is the other partparte, from a designer'sdiseñador standpointpunto de vista --
57
227000
6000
04:17
if you're happycontento while actuallyactualmente doing it.
58
233000
2000
-- si eres feliz cuando lo estas haciéndolo.
04:19
And one way to see how happycontento designersdiseñadores are when they're designingdiseño could be to
59
235000
7000
04:26
look at the authors'autores ' photosfotos on the back of theirsu monographsmonografías?
60
242000
4000
04:30
(LaughterRisa)
61
246000
1000
(Risas)
04:31
So, accordingconforme to this, the AustraliansAustralianos and the Japanesejaponés
62
247000
5000
04:36
as well as the MexicansMexicanos
63
252000
1000
al igual que los mejicanos
04:37
are very happycontento.
64
253000
2000
son muy felices.
04:39
(LaughterRisa)
65
255000
1000
(Risas)
04:40
While, somewhatalgo, the SpaniardsEspañoles ...
66
256000
2000
Mientras que, de algún modo, los españoles
04:42
and, I think, particularlyparticularmente, the Swisssuizo
67
258000
4000
... y, en mi opinión, especialmente los suizos
04:46
(LaughterRisa),
68
262000
2000
(Risas)
04:48
don't seemparecer to be doing all that well.
69
264000
2000
no la están pasando tan bien.
04:50

Last Novembernoviembre, a museummuseo openedabrió in TokyoTokio calledllamado The MoriMori MuseumMuseo,

in a skyscraperrascacielos, up on the 56thth floorpiso.
72
280000
4000
en un rascacielos, arriba en el piso 56.
05:08
And theirsu inauguralinaugural exhibitexposición was calledllamado "HappinessFelicidad."
73
284000
4000
Y su exposición inagural se llamaba "Felicidad".
05:12
And I wentfuimos, very eagerlyansiosamente, to see it, because --
74
288000
4000
Y fui muy emocionado a verla porque --
05:16
well, alsoademás, with an eyeojo on this conferenceconferencia.
75
292000
4000
Bueno, estaba ya pensando en esta conferencia.
05:20
And they interestinglycuriosamente sectionedseccionado the exhibitexposición off into fourlas cuatro differentdiferente areasáreas.
76
296000
10000
05:30
UnderDebajo "ArcadiaArcadia," they showedmostró things like this, from the EdoEdo periodperíodo --
77
306000
4000
05:34
a hundredcien waysformas to writeescribir "happinessfelicidad" in differentdiferente formsformularios.
78
310000
5000
-- cien maneras distintas de escribir "felicidad".
05:39
Or they had this applemanzana by YokoYoko OnoOno -- that, of coursecurso, laterluego on
79
315000
4000
05:43
was, you know, madehecho into the labeletiqueta for The BeatlesBeatles.
80
319000
5000
05:48
UnderDebajo "NirvanaNirvana" they showedmostró this ConstableAlguacil paintingpintura.
81
324000
4000
Bajo "Nirvana" mostraban este cuadro de Constable.
05:52
And there was a little -- an interestinginteresante theoryteoría about abstractionabstracción.
82
328000
4000
05:56
This is a blueazul fieldcampo -- it's actuallyactualmente an YvesYves KleinKlein paintingpintura.
83
332000
4000
06:00
And the theoryteoría was that if you abstractabstracto an imageimagen, you really, you know
84
336000
5000
06:05
openabierto as much roomhabitación for the un-representableno representable --
85
341000
4000
06:09
and, thereforepor lo tanto, you know, are ablepoder to involveinvolucrar the viewerespectador more.
86
345000
6000
06:15
Then, underdebajo "DesireDeseo," they showedmostró these ShunshoShunsho paintingspinturas --
87
351000
4000
Luego, bajo "Deseo", mostraban estas pinturas Shunsho
06:19
alsoademás from the EdoEdo periodperíodo -- inktinta on silkseda.
88
355000
6000
-- también del período Edo -- tinta sobre seda.
06:25
And, lastlyFinalmente, underdebajo "HarmonyArmonía," they had this 13th-centurysiglo x mandalamandala from TibetTíbet.
89
361000
7000
06:32
Now, what I tooktomó away from the exhibitexposición was that
90
368000
4000
06:36
maybe with the exceptionexcepción of the mandalamandala
91
372000
3000
quizás con la exepción de la mandala,
06:39
mostmás of the piecespiezas in there were actuallyactualmente about the visualizationvisualización of happinessfelicidad
92
375000
6000
06:45
and not about happinessfelicidad.
93
381000
2000
no sobre la felicidad.
06:47
And I feltsintió a little bitpoco cheatedengañado, because the visualizationvisualización --
94
383000
4000
06:51
that's a really easyfácil thing to do.
95
387000
3000
--es lo realmente fácil de hacer.
06:54
And, you know, my studioestudio -- we'venosotros tenemos donehecho it all the time.
96
390000
3000
06:57
This is, you know, a booklibro.
97
393000

Ésto es, ya saben, un libro.
06:59
A happycontento dogperro -- and you take it out, it's an aggressiveagresivo dogperro.

100

4000
07:13
You know, that's not a biggrande dealacuerdo to accomplishrealizar.
101
409000
4000
Saben, no es un gran logro.
07:17
It has gottenconseguido to the pointpunto where, you know, withindentro advertisingpublicidad
102
413000
5000
07:22
or withindentro the moviepelícula industryindustria, "happycontento" has gottenconseguido suchtal a badmalo reputationreputación that
103
418000
6000
07:28
if you actuallyactualmente want to do something with the subjecttema
104
424000
3000
07:31
and still appearAparecer authenticauténtico, you almostcasi would have to, you know,
105
427000
5000
07:36
do it from a cynicalcínico pointpunto of viewver.
106
432000
3000
hacerlo desde un punto de vista cínico.
07:39
This is, you know, the moviepelícula posterpóster.
107

07:58
Much, much more difficultdifícil is this, where the designsdiseños actuallyactualmente can evokeevocar happinessfelicidad --
110
454000
9000
08:07
and I'm going to just showespectáculo you threeTres that actuallyactualmente did this for me.

08:42
So this is one.
119

Ésta es una.
08:44
(LaughterRisa)
120
500000

08:50
Now, the way this workstrabajos in the systemsistema is that nobodynadie ever looksmiradas at these signsseñales.
121

08:55
So you're

Así que
08:57
(LaughterRisa)

you're really boredaburrido in the subwaysubterraneo, and you kindtipo of staremirar fijamente at something.
124

09:03
And it takes you a while untilhasta it actuallyactualmente --
