ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sarah Jones - Polymorphic playwright
Tony Award-winning monologist, UNICEF ambassador, firebrand and FCC-fighting poet -- Sarah Jones assumes as many roles offstage as on.

Why you should listen

"Chameleon-like" barely describes the astonishing ease with which Sarah Jones slips in and out of the characters in her solo performances -- as many as fourteen personae in her Broadway hit Bridge & Tunnel. Critics marvel not only at her ability to perfectly mimic accents and mannerisms, but also to seemingly reshape her body, down to pupils and dimples, in the blink of an eye.

Jones' performances showcase a biting political awareness, and she has received commissions from Equality Now, the Kellogg Foundation and the National Immigration Forum to address issues of injustice and inequality. She is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has given multiple performances at the White House at the invitation of President and First Lady Obama. Jones is now at work on a new solo show called Sell/Buy/Date, commissioned by the Novo Foundation. She debuted material from it at TED2015. She is also working on a commission for Lincoln Center Theater and a television project based on her characters.

06:48
NobodyNadie can understandentender nothing I'm sayingdiciendo, whichcual is very frustratingfrustrante for me,
130
396000
2000
06:50
as you can imagineimagina.
131
398000
1000
como pueden imaginarse.
06:51
I usuallygeneralmente have to just like try to calmcalma down and take a deepprofundo breathaliento.
132
399000
2000
06:53
But then on topparte superior of that, you know, SarahSarah JonesJones told me we only have 18 minutesminutos.
133
401000
3000
06:56
So then I'm like, should I be nervousnervioso, you know, because maybe it's better.
134
404000
2000
06:58
And I'm just tryingmolesto not to panicpánico and freakmonstruo out. So I like, take a deepprofundo breathaliento.
135
406000
4000
07:02
Okay. Sorry. So anywayde todas formas, what I was tryingmolesto to say is that I really love TEDTED.
136
410000
5000
Okay.
07:07
Like, I love everything about this. It's amazingasombroso.
137
415000
2000
Como, yo amo todo acerca de esto. Es increíble.
07:09
Like, it's -- I can't get over this right now.
138
417000
2000
07:11
And, like, people would not believe, seriouslyseriamente, where I'm from,
139
419000
2000
07:13
that this even existsexiste.
140
421000
2000
que esto existe.
07:15
You know, like even, I mean I love like the namenombre, the -- TEDTED.
141
423000
3000
07:18
I mean I know it's a realreal personpersona and everything, but I'm just sayingdiciendo that like,
142
426000
3000
07:21
you know, I think it's very coolguay how it's alsoademás an acronymacrónimo, you know,
143
429000
4000
07:25
whichcual is like, you know, is like very highalto conceptconcepto and everything like that.
144
433000
2000
07:27
I like that.
145
435000
2000
Me gusta eso.
07:29
And actuallyactualmente, I can relaterelacionar to the wholetodo like acronymacrónimo thing and everything.
146
437000
4000
07:33
Because, actuallyactualmente, I'm a sophomoreestudiante de segundo año at collegeUniversidad right now.
147
441000
2000
07:35
At my schoolcolegio -- actuallyactualmente I was partparte of co-foundingco-fundador an organizationorganización,
148
443000
4000
07:39
whichcual is like a leadershipliderazgo thing,
149
447000
2000
que es como algo de liderazgo,
07:41
you know, like you guys, you would really like it and everything.
150
449000
3000
07:44
And the organizationorganización is calledllamado DADA BOMBBOMBA,
151
452000
3000
Y la organizacion se llama LA BOMBA (DA BOMB),
07:47
A\and DADA BOMBBOMBA -- not like what you guys can buildconstruir and everything --
152
455000
4000
07:51
it's like, DADA BOMBBOMBA, it meansmedio like Dominicandominicano -- it's an acronymacrónimo --
153
459000
4000
07:55
Dominican-AmericanDominicano americano BenevolentBenevolente OrganizationOrganización for MothersMadres and BabiesCriaturas.
154
463000
3000
Asociación Americana Dominicana Benevolente para Madres y Bebés.
07:58
So, I know, see, like the namenombre is like a little bitpoco long,
155
466000
4000
08:02
but with the warguerra on terrorterror and everything,
156
470000
2000
08:04
the DeanDecano of StudentEstudiante ActivitiesOcupaciones has askedpreguntó us to stop sayingdiciendo DADA BOMBBOMBA
157
472000
2000
08:06
and use the wholetodo thing so nobodynadie would get the wrongincorrecto ideaidea, whateverlo que sea.
158
474000
2000
08:08
So, basicallybásicamente like DADA BOMBBOMBA --
159
476000
4000
Entonces, básicamente como LA BOMBA
08:12
what Dominican-AmericanDominicano americano BenevolentBenevolente OrganizationOrganización for MothersMadres and BabiesCriaturas does
160
480000
4000
lo que La Asociación Americana Dominicana Benevolente para Madres y Bebés hace
08:16
is, basicallybásicamente, we try to advocateabogado for studentsestudiantes who showespectáculo a lot of academicacadémico promisepromesa
161
484000
9000
08:25
and who alsoademás happenocurrir to be mothersmadres like me.
162
493000
3000
y que también son madres como yo.
08:28
I am a workingtrabajando mothermadre, and I alsoademás go to schoolcolegio full-timetiempo completo.
163
496000
3000
08:31
And, you know, it's like -- it's so importantimportante to have like rolepapel modelsmodelos out there.
164
499000
4000
08:35
I mean, I know sometimesa veces our lifestylesestilos de vida are very differentdiferente, whateverlo que sea.
165
503000
2000
08:37
But like even at my jobtrabajo -- like, I just got promotedpromovido.
166
505000
3000
08:40
Right now it's very excitingemocionante actuallyactualmente for me
167
508000
3000
08:43
because I'm the JuniorJúnior AssistantAsistente to the AssociateAsociar DirectorDirector
168
511000
2000
08:45
underdebajo the SeniorMayor ViceVicio Presidentpresidente for BusinessNegocio DevelopmentDesarrollo --
169
513000
2000
08:47
that's my newnuevo titletítulo.
170
515000
2000
Ese es mi nuevo título.
08:49
So, but I think whethersi you ownpropio your ownpropio companyempresa or you're just startingcomenzando out like me,
171
517000
4000
08:53
like something like this is so vitalvital
172
521000
2000
08:55
for people to just continuecontinuar expandingen expansión theirsu mindsmentes and learningaprendizaje.
173
523000
3000
08:58
And if everybodytodos, like all people really had accessacceso to that,
174
526000
3000
09:01
it would be a very differentdiferente worldmundo out there, as I know you know.
175
529000
3000
09:04
So, I think all people, we need that,
176
532000
2000
09:06
but especiallyespecialmente, I look at people like me, you know like,
177
534000
3000
09:09
I mean, LatinosLatinos -- we're about to be the majoritymayoria, in like two weekssemanas.
178
537000
7000
09:16
So, we deservemerecer just as much to be partparte of the exchangeintercambiar of ideasideas as everybodytodos elsemás.
179
544000
6000
09:22
So, I'm very happycontento that you're, you know, doing this kindtipo of thing,
180
550000
3000
09:25
makingfabricación the talksnegociaciones availabledisponible onlineen línea.
181
553000
2000
09:27
That's very good. I love that.
182
555000
2000
Eso es muy bueno. Amo eso.
09:29
And I just -- I love you guys. I love TEDTED.
183
557000
2000
Y yo solo -- Los amo chicos. Yo amo TED.
09:31
And if you don't mindmente, privatelyen privado now, in the futurefuturo, I'm going to think of TEDTED
184
559000
3000
09:34
as an acronymacrónimo for TechnologyTecnología, EntertainmentEntretenimiento and DominicansDominicanos.
185
562000
3000
09:37
Thank you very much.
186
565000
2000
Muchísimas gracias.
09:39

10:33
It was like, you know, she was there in the classclase,
203
621000
2000
10:35
you know, she was kindtipo of typicallytípicamente Frenchfrancés.
204
623000
2000
10:37
You know, she was very chicelegante, but she was very filledlleno with ennuitedio, you know.
205
625000
5000
10:42
And she would be there, you know, kindtipo of talkinghablando with the classclase, you know,

630000
5000

11:09
even in the UNNaciones Unidas schoolcolegio.
212
657000
2000
hasta en la escuela de la ONU.
11:11
AlthoughA pesar de que, you know, it was wonderfulmaravilloso.
213
659000
2000
Pero, saben. fue maravilloso.
11:13
The teacherprofesor, HerrHerr SchtopfSchtopf, he never discriminateddiscriminado.
214
661000
3000
El profesor, Herr Schtopf, el nunca discriminó.
11:16
Never. He always, always treatedtratado eachcada of us,

you know, equallyIgualmente unbearablyinsoportable duringdurante the classclase.
216
667000
3000
saben, igualmente insoportable, durante la clase.
11:22
So, there were the teachersprofesores and then there were my friendsamigos,
217

4000
Entonces, ahí estaban los profesores y luego estaban mis amigos

when the time comesproviene for them to startcomienzo think about gettingconsiguiendo marriedcasado,
269
859000

270
863000

14:41
But that's where we had some problemsproblemas.
271
869000
3000
Pero ahí fue cuando tuvimos problemas.
14:44
My sonhijo, he saysdice he is not readyListo to get marriedcasado.
272
872000

14:47
And he has a sweetheartnovio, but she is Americanamericano womanmujer, not Chinesechino.

14:53
It's not that it's badmalo, but I told him, "What's wrongincorrecto with a Chinesechino womanmujer?"
274
881000
6000
14:59
But I think he will changecambio his mindmente soonpronto.
275
887000
3000

15:07
The daughter'shija marriagematrimonio is very specialespecial to the mommamá.
277
895000
3000
15:10
But first, she said she's not interestedinteresado.
278
898000
4000
15:14
She only wants to spendgastar time with her friendsamigos.
279
902000
3000
Ella solo quiere estar con sus amigos.
15:17
And then at collegeUniversidad, it's like she never camevino home.
280
905000
5000
15:22
And she doesn't want me to come and visitvisitar.
281
910000
3000
15:25
So I said, "What's wrongincorrecto in this pictureimagen?"
282
913000
2000
Entonces dije, "¿qué esta mal aquí?"
15:27
So, I accusedacusado my daughterhija to have like a secretsecreto boyfriendnovio.
283
915000
5000
15:32
But she told me, "MomMamá, you don't have to worrypreocupación about boyschicos

15:38
(LaughterRisa)
286

15:41
And I said, "Yes, menhombres can be difficultdifícil, but all womenmujer have to get used to that."
287
929000

15:47
She said, "No MomMamá. I mean, I don't like boyschicos. I like girlschicas.
288
935000

Ella dijo, "No mamá. Quiero decir, no me gustan los chicos. Me gustan las chicas.
15:52
I am lesbianlesbiana."
289

15:54
So, I always teachenseñar my kidsniños to respectel respeto Americanamericano ideasideas,

Entonces, siempre enseño a mis hijos a respetar las ideas americanas,
15:59

291

16:03
(LaughterRisa) --

293
954000

16:14
But she told me, "MomMamá, it's not Americanamericano."
294
962000
4000
16:18
She said she is in love -- in love with a nicebonito Chinesechino girlniña.
295
