Adam Sadowsky - Creative entrepreneur
As the president of Syyn Labs, Adam Sadowsky merges art and technology to create interactive projects big and small.

Why you should listen

Adam Sadowsky is the president of Syyn Labs -- a collective of talented people that bring aesthetics and engineering together to create really nifty interactive art. Syyn Labs is responsible for a potpourri of interesting gizmos, from augmented reality namebadges to sound-reactive fire sculpture, but are best known for the huge Rube Goldberg machine created for OK Go's music video "This Too Shall Pass" that instantly went viral via YouTube.

In addition to engineering interactive art, Sadowsky serves as COO for the popular Mindshare LA events, where people across disciplines come together every month to share ideas (thought up while the founders were at TED2005).  He is also the co-founder and vice president of the IBD Foundation, providing support to people with Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, having been diagnosed with the latter in 1984. Sadowsky has also worked in software, product design, video games, genetics research, online auctions and even had quite a successful acting stint, sharing the TV screen with both Jason Bateman and Matthew Perry.

00:37
but before we do, I want to talk a little bitpoco about
9
22000
3000
pero antes quiero hablar un poco de
00:40
what it is that they wanted.
10
25000
2000
qué es lo que ellos querían.
00:42
Now, when we first startedempezado talkinghablando to OK Go --

00:48
we were really excitedemocionado because
13

2000
estábamos realmente emocionados porque
00:50
they expressedexpresado interestinteresar in buildingedificio a machinemáquina that they could dancebaile with.
14
35000
3000
00:53
And we were very excitedemocionado about this
15
38000
2000
Y estábamos muy entusiasmados con esto
00:55
because, of coursecurso,
16
40000
2000
porque, por supuesto,
00:57
they have a historyhistoria of dancingbailando with machinesmáquinas.
17
42000
3000
ellos tienen experiencia bailando con máquinas.
01:00
They're responsibleresponsable for this videovídeo, "Here It GoesVa Again."

A fantasticallyfantásticamente viralviral and wonderfulmaravilloso videovídeo.
22

2000
Un vídeo maravilloso y fantásticamente viral.
01:12
So we were really excitedemocionado about workingtrabajando with them.
23
57000
2000
01:14
And we sortordenar of startedempezado talkinghablando about what it is that they wanted.
24
59000
3000
01:17
And they explainedexplicado that they wanted
25

2000
Y ellos explicaron que querían
01:19
kindtipo of a RubePalurdo GoldbergGoldberg machinemáquina.
26
64000
2000
una suerte de máquina de Rube Goldberg.
01:21
Now, for those of you who don't know,
27
66000
3000
01:24
a RubePalurdo GoldbergGoldberg machinemáquina
28
69000
2000
una máquina de Rube Goldberg
01:26
is a complicatedComplicado contraptionartilugio,
29
71000
2000
es un artilugio complejo,
01:28
an incrediblyincreíblemente over-engineeredsobre Diseñado piecepieza of machinerymaquinaria
30
73000
3000
una maquinaria de increíble ingeniería sobredimensionada
01:31

31

3000

01:34
So we were excitedemocionado by this ideaidea,
32
79000
2000
Así que nos entusiasmamos con esta idea
01:36
and we startedempezado talkinghablando about
33
81000
2000
y comenzamos a hablar de
01:38
exactlyexactamente what it would look like.
34
83000
2000
exactamente cómo se vería.
01:40
And we camevino up with some parametersparámetros, because,
35
85000
2000
Y nos encontramos algunos parámetros que...
01:42
you know, buildingedificio a RubePalurdo GoldbergGoldberg machinemáquina
36
87000
2000
01:44
has limitationslimitaciones,
37
89000
3000
tiene sus limitaciones
01:47
but it alsoademás is prettybonita wideamplio openabierto.
38
92000
3000
pero también es algo bastante abierto.
01:50
And we wanted to make sure that we did something
39
95000
2000
Y queríamos asegurarnos de hacer algo
01:52
that would work for a musicmúsica videovídeo.
40
97000
3000
que funcionara en un videoclip.
01:55
So we camevino up with a listlista of requirementsrequisitos,
41
100000
3000
Así que desarrollamos una lista de requisitos,
01:58
the "10 commandmentsmandamientos,"
42
103000
2000
los "10 mandamientos",
02:00
and they were, in orderorden of ascendingascendiendo difficultydificultad:
43
105000
3000
que eran, en orden ascendente de dificultad:
02:03
The first is "No magicmagia."
44
108000
2000
el primero es "Nada de magia".
02:05
Everything that happenedsucedió on screenpantalla had to be
45
110000
2000
02:07
very easilyfácilmente understoodentendido by a typicaltípico viewerespectador.
46
112000
2000
entendido muy fácilmente por un espectador típico.
02:09
The ruleregla of thumbpulgar was that, if my mothermadre couldn'tno pudo understandentender it,
47
114000
3000
02:12
then we couldn'tno pudo use it in the videovídeo.
48
117000
2000
02:14
They wanted bandbanda integrationintegración,
49
119000
2000
Hacía falta integración con la banda
02:16
that is, the machinemáquina actinginterino uponsobre the bandbanda membersmiembros,
50
121000
3000
02:19
specificallyespecíficamente not the other way around.
51
124000
2000
y, expresamente, que no fuera al revés.
02:21
They wanted the machinemáquina actionacción to followseguir the songcanción feelingsensación.
52
126000
3000
02:24
So as the songcanción picksselecciones up emotionemoción,
53
129000
2000
02:26
so should the machinemáquina
54
131000
2000
también la máquina debía
02:28
get grandergrandioso in its processproceso.
55
133000
2000
actuar de forma más espectacular.
02:30
They wanted us to make use of the spaceespacio.
56
135000
2000
Nos pidieron que hiciéramos uso del espacio.
02:32
So we have this 10,000-square-foot-pie cuadrado warehousealmacén we were usingutilizando,
57
137000
3000
Así que estábamos usando un almacén de 900 m2
02:35
divideddividido betweenEntre two floorspisos.
58
140000
2000
dividido en dos plantas,
02:37
It includedincluido an exteriorexterior loadingcargando dockmuelle.
59
142000
2000
que incluía un muelle de carga exterior.
02:39
We used all of that, includingincluso a giantgigante holeagujero in the floorpiso
60
144000
3000
02:42
that we actuallyactualmente descendeddescendió the cameracámara and cameramancamarógrafo throughmediante.
61
147000
3000
02:45
They wanted it messysucio, and we were happycontento to obligeobligar.
62
150000
3000
Querían desorden y nosotros estábamos encantados de complacerlos.
02:48
The machinemáquina itselfsí mismo would startcomienzo the musicmúsica.
63
153000
2000
02:50
So the machinemáquina would get startedempezado,
64
155000
2000
Entonces la máquina arrancaría,
02:52
it would travelviajar some distancedistancia,
65
157000
2000
recorrería una cierta distancia,
02:54
reactingreaccionando alonga lo largo the way,
66
159000
2000
reaccionando a lo largo del camino,
02:56
hitgolpear playjugar on an iPodiPod or a tapecinta deckcubierta
67
161000
2000
02:58
or something that would startcomienzo playbackreproducción.
68
163000
2000
o algo que pudiera comenzar a reproducir.
03:00
And the machinemáquina would maintainmantener synchronizationsincronización throughouten todo.
69
165000
3000
03:03
And speakingHablando of synchronizationsincronización,
70
168000
2000
Y hablando de sincronización
03:05
they wanted it to syncsincronización to the rhythmritmo
71
170000
2000
se quería que sincronizase con el ritmo
03:07
and to hitgolpear specificespecífico beatslatidos alonga lo largo the way.
72
172000
3000
03:11
Okay. (LaughterRisa)
73
176000
3000
Está bien. (Risas)
03:14
They wanted it to endfin preciselyprecisamente on time.
74
179000
3000
Se quería que terminara exactamente a tiempo.
03:17
Okay, so now the startcomienzo to finishterminar timingsincronización has to be perfectPerfecto.
75
182000
3000
03:20
And they wanted the musicmúsica to dropsoltar out
76
185000
2000
Se quería que la música se detuviera
03:22
at a certaincierto pointpunto in the videovídeo
77
187000
2000
en cierto momento del video
03:24
and actualreal livevivir audioaudio from the machinemáquina
78
189000
2000
03:26
to playjugar partparte of the songcanción.
79
191000
2000
tocara parte de la canción.
03:29
And as if that wasn'tno fue enoughsuficiente,
80
194000
2000
Y como si esto no fuera suficiente
03:31
all of these incrediblyincreíblemente complicatingcomplicando things, right,
81
196000
3000
todas estas cosas increíblemente complicadas, correcto,
03:34
they wanted it in one shotDisparo.
82
199000
2000
querían que fueran en una sola toma.
03:36
(LaughterRisa)

(Aplausos)
03:43
Okay.
85
208000
2000
Bien.
03:46
So, just some statisticsestadística
86
211000
2000
Algunas estadísticas
03:48
about what we wentfuimos throughmediante in the processproceso.
87
213000
2000
03:50
The machinemáquina itselfsí mismo has

Y perdimos un zapato de tacones altos
04:20
when one of our engineersingenieros, HeatherBrezo KnightCaballero,
100
245000
2000
cuando una de nuestras ingenieras, Heather Knight,
04:22
left her high-heeledtacón alto shoezapato -- after a nicebonito dinnercena,
101
247000
2000
04:24

102

2000
volvió a trabajar
04:26
and left it in a pilepila of stuffcosas.
103
251000
2000
y se lo dejó en una pila de cosas.
04:28
And anotherotro engineeringeniero thought, "Well, that would be a really good thing to use"
104
253000
2000
Y otro ingeniero pensó: "Bueno, podríamos usar esto".
04:30
and endedterminado up usingutilizando it as a really nicebonito triggerdesencadenar.
105

Y terminó usándolo como un bonito disparador.
04:32
And it's actuallyactualmente in the machinemáquina.
106
257000
3000
Y, de hecho, está en la máquina.
04:35
So what did we learnaprender from all of this?
107
260000
2000
Así que, ¿qué aprendimos de todo esto?
04:37
Well, havingteniendo completedterminado this,
108
262000
2000
Bien, después de haber terminado
04:39
we have the opportunityoportunidad to steppaso back and reflectreflejar
109
264000
2000
tenemos la oportunidad de retroceder y reflexionar
04:41
on some of the things.
110
266000
2000
sobre algunas de estas cosas.
04:43
And we learnedaprendido that smallpequeña stuffcosas stinksapesta.
111
268000
2000
Y aprendimos que las cosas pequeñas apestan.
04:45

04:54

116

los ángulos exactos hacen difícil hacerlo bien.
04:56
And yettodavía, a bowlingbolos ballpelota will always followseguir the samemismo pathcamino.
117
281000
3000
04:59
It doesn't matterimportar what temperaturetemperatura it is,
118
284000
2000
No importa la temperatura,
05:01
doesn't matterimportar what's in its way;
119
286000
2000
no importa qué haya en su camino;
05:03
it will prettybonita much get where it needsnecesariamente to go.
120
288000
2000
05:05
But as much as the smallpequeña stuffcosas stinksapesta, we needednecesario somewherealgun lado to startcomienzo,
121
290000
2000
05:07
so that we would have somewherealgun lado to go.
122
292000
2000
para tener adónde ir.
05:09
And so you have to startcomienzo with it. You have to focusatención on it.
123
294000
3000
Así que tenemos que comenzar con eso. Uno tiene que centrarse en eso.
05:12
SmallPequeña stuffcosas stinksapesta,
124
297000
2000
Las cosas pequeñas apestan
05:14
but, of coursecurso, it's essentialesencial, right?
125
299000
2000
pero, por supuesto, son esenciales.
05:16
What elsemás? PlanningPlanificación is incrediblyincreíblemente importantimportante.
126
301000
3000
¿Qué más? La planificación es muy importante.
05:19
(LaughterRisa)

(Risas)
05:23
You know, we spentgastado a lot of time ideatingideando
128
308000
2000
Ya saben, pasamos mucho tiempo ideando
05:25
and even buildingedificio some of these things.
129
310000
2000
e incluso construyendo algunas de estas cosas.
05:27
It's been said that, "No battlebatalla planplan
130

2000
Se dice que "Ningún plan de batalla
05:29

131

2000
sobrevive al contacto con el enemigo".
05:31
I think our enemyenemigo was physicsfísica --
132
316000
2000
Creo que nuestro enemigo era la física
05:33
(LaughterRisa)
133
318000
2000
(Risas)
05:35
and she's a cruelcruel mistressamante.
134
320000
3000
y ella es una amante cruel.
05:38
OftenA menudo, we had to pullHalar things out as a resultresultado
135
323000
2000
05:40
because of timingsincronización or aestheticsestética or whateverlo que sea.
136
325000
3000
05:43
And so while planningplanificación is importantimportante, so is flexibilityflexibilidad.
137
328000
3000
05:46
These are all things that endedterminado up
138

Todas estas son cosas que no terminaron
05:48

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
