ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jonathan Drori - Educator
Jonathan Drori commissioned the BBC's very first websites, one highlight in a long career devoted to online culture and educational media -- and understanding how we learn.

Why you should listen

Jonathan Drori has dedicated his career to media and learning. As the Head of Commissioning for BBC Online, he led the effort to create bbc.co.uk, the online face of the BBC (an effort he recalls fondly). He came to the web from the TV side of the BBC, where as an editor and producer he headed up dozens of television series on science, education and the arts.

After almost two decades at the BBC, he's now a director at Changing Media Ltd., a media and education consultancy, and is a visiting professor at University of Bristol, where he studies educational media and misperceptions in science. He continues to executive produce the occasional TV series, including 2004's award-winning "The DNA Story" and 2009's "Great Sperm Race." He is on the boards of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Woodland Trust.

I'm going to try and explainselittää why it is that perhapsehkä
0
0
4000
Yritän selittää teille,
miksi emme ehkä ymmärrä
00:22
we don't understandymmärtää as much as we think we do.
1
4000
2000
niin paljon kuin
luulemme ymmärtävämme.
00:24
I'd like to beginalkaa with fourneljä questionskysymykset.
2
6000
3000
Aloitan neljällä kysymyksellä.
00:27
This is not some sortjärjestellä of culturalkulttuurinen thing for the time of yearvuosi.
3
9000
3000
Tämä ei ole mikään vuodenaikaan
liittyvä kulttuurillinen seikka.
00:30
That's an in-jokein-vitsi, by the way.
4
12000
2000
Se oli vitsi.
00:32
But these fourneljä questionskysymykset, actuallyitse asiassa,
5
14000
3000
Nämä neljä kysymystä
ovat vaikeita
00:35
are onesyhdet that people who even know quitemelko a lot about sciencetiede find quitemelko hardkova.
6
17000
3000
jopa niille, jotka tietävät
tieteestä melko paljon.
00:38
And they're questionskysymykset that I've askedkysyi of sciencetiede televisiontelevisio producerstuottajia,
7
20000
5000
Olen kysynyt näitä kysymyksiä
tieteisohjelmien tuottajilta,
luonnontieteiden opettajilta
00:43
of audiencesyleisöt of sciencetiede educatorsopettajat --
8
25000
3000
00:46
so that's sciencetiede teachersopettajat -- and alsomyös of seven-year-olds7-vuotiaista,
9
28000
4000
sekä seitsenvuotiailta.
00:50
and I find that the seven-year-olds7-vuotiaista do marginallyhieman better
10
32000
3000
Olen havainnut, että
seitsenvuotiaat tietävät vastaukset
00:53
than the other audiencesyleisöt, whichjoka is somewhatjokseenkin surprisingyllättävä.
11
35000
2000
paremmin kuin muut,
mikä on melko yllättävää.
00:55
So the first questionkysymys, and you mightmahti want to writekirjoittaa this down,
12
37000
3000
Ensimmäisenä kysymys, joka
kannattaa kirjoittaa paperille
00:58
eitherjompikumpi on a bitbitti of paperpaperi, physicallyfyysisesti, or a virtualvirtuaali- piecepala of paperpaperi
13
40000
4000
tai vain laittaa muistiin.
01:02
in your headpää. And, for viewerskatsojat at home, you can try this as well.
14
44000
3000
Ja kotikatsojat,
voitte kokeilla tätä myös.
01:05
A little seedsiemen weighspainaa nextSeuraava to nothing and a treepuu weighspainaa a lot, right?
15
47000
5000
Siemen ei paina juuri mitään,
puu painaa paljon, eikö?
01:10
I think we agreeolla samaa mieltä on that. Where does the treepuu get the stuffjutut that makesmerkit up this chairtuoli,
16
52000
6000
Olemme samaa mieltä.
Mistä puu sitten saa aineksen,
josta tämä tuoli on tehty?
01:16
right? Where does all this stuffjutut come from?
17
58000
3000
Mistä tämä aines tulee?
01:19
(KnocksKoputtaa)
18
61000
1000
01:20
And your nextSeuraava questionkysymys is, can you lightvalo a little torch-bulbsoihtu-lamppu
19
62000
6000
Seuraava kysymys.
Osaatko sytyttää pienen lampun
paristolla ja johdon pätkällä?
01:26
with a batteryakku, a bulbpolttimo and one piecepala of wirejohdin?
20
68000
5000
01:31
And would you be ablepystyä to, kindkiltti of, drawpiirtää a -- you don't have to drawpiirtää
21
73000
2000
Ja osaisitko
tarvittaessa piirtää
01:33
the diagramkaavio, but would you be ablepystyä to drawpiirtää the diagramkaavio,
22
75000
2000
tästä diagrammin,
jos sinun olisi pakko?
01:35
if you had to do it? Or would you just say,
23
77000
2000
Vai toteaisitko, ettei
se ole mahdollista?
01:37
that's actuallyitse asiassa not possiblemahdollinen?
24
79000
3000
01:40
The thirdkolmas questionkysymys is, why is it hotterlämpimämpää in summerkesä than in wintertalvi-?
25
82000
4000
Kolmas kysymys: miksi kesällä
on kuumempaa kuin talvella?
01:44
I think we can probablytodennäköisesti agreeolla samaa mieltä that it is hotterlämpimämpää in summerkesä than in wintertalvi-,
26
86000
5000
Olemme samaa mieltä siitä,
että kesällä on kuumempaa.
01:49
but why? And finallyvihdoin, would you be ablepystyä to --
27
91000
6000
Mutta miksi?
Ja lopuksi,
tämän voit
raapustaa,
01:55
and you can sortjärjestellä of scribblesepustus it, if you like --
28
97000
2000
osaisitko piirtää kaavion
aurinkokunnasta,
01:57
scribblesepustus a plansuunnitelma diagramkaavio of the solaraurinko- systemjärjestelmä,
29
99000
3000
02:00
showingosoittavat the shapemuoto of the planets'planeettojen orbitsradat?
30
102000
4000
jossa näkyy planeettojen
kiertoratojen muoto?
02:04
Would you be ablepystyä to do that?
31
106000
1000
Osaisitko tehdä sen?
02:05
And if you can, just scribblesepustus a patternkuvio.
32
107000
5000
Jos osaat,
niin voit raapustaa sen.
No niin.
02:10
OK. Now, childrenlapset get theirheidän ideasideoita not from teachersopettajat,
33
112000
6000
Lapset eivät
saa ideoitaan opettajilta,
02:16
as teachersopettajat oftenusein think, but actuallyitse asiassa from commonyhteinen sensetunne,
34
118000
3000
toisin kuin opettajat luulevat.
He saavat ne todellisen
maailman kokemuksistaan,
02:19
from experiencekokea of the worldmaailman- around them,
35
121000
2000
02:21
from all the things that go on betweenvälillä them and theirheidän peersikäisensä,
36

37
127000
5000

02:30
And one of the great expertsasiantuntijat in this fieldala, of coursekurssi, was, blesssiunata him,
38
132000
5000
Yksi tämän alan suuria
asiantuntijoita oli, tietenkin,
02:35
CardinalKardinaali WolseyWolsey. Be very carefulvarovainen what you get into people'sihmisten headspäät
39
137000
4000
kardinaali Wolsey.
"Varo, mitä syötät ihmisten mieliin,
02:39
because it's virtuallykäytännössä impossiblemahdoton to shiftsiirtää it afterwardsjälkeenpäin, right?
40
141000
3000
sillä sitä on lähes mahdotonta
saada sieltä pois."
02:42
(LaughterNaurua)
41
144000
3000
En itse asiassa tiedä,
kuinka hän kuoli.
02:45
I'm not quitemelko sure how he diedkuollut, actuallyitse asiassa.
42
147000
2000
02:47
Was he beheadedmestattiin in the endpää, or hungHung?
43
149000
2000
Mestattiinko hänet
vai hirtettiinkö?
02:49
(LaughterNaurua)
44
151000
1000
02:50
Now, those questionskysymykset, whichjoka, of coursekurssi, you've got right,
45
152000
2000
Sitten ne kysymykset,
jotka toki osasitte,
02:52
and you haven'tole been conferringannetaan, and so on.
46
154000
2000
ettekä kysyneet apua
vierustoverilta.
02:54
And I -- you know, normallyyleensä, I would pickvalita people out and humiliatenöyryyttää,
47
156000
3000
Yleensä valitsisin jonkun
teistä nöyryytettäväksi,
02:57
but maybe not in this instanceilmentymä.
48
159000
2000
mutta ehkäpä ei
tässä tilaisuudessa.
02:59
A little seedsiemen weighspainaa a lot and, basicallypohjimmiltaan, all this stuffjutut,
49
161000
4000
Siemen painaa paljon
ja kaikki tämä aines,
03:03
99 percentprosentti of this stuffjutut, cametuli out of the airilma.
50
165000
3000
99 prosenttia tästä,
tulee ilmasta.
03:06
Now, I guaranteetakuu that about 85 percentprosentti of you, or maybe it's fewervähemmän at TEDTED,
51
168000
4000
Olen varma, että 85 prosenttia teistä,
tai ehkä TED:ssä vähemmän,
03:10
will have said it comestulee out of the groundmaa. And some people,
52
172000
3000
sanoivat, että aines tulee maasta.
03:13
probablytodennäköisesti two of you, will come up and argueväitellä with me afterwardsjälkeenpäin,
53
175000
3000
Ja muutama teistä tulee
luokseni jälkikäteen
03:16
and say that actuallyitse asiassa, it comestulee out of the groundmaa.
54
178000
2000
sanomaan, että se tulee maasta.
03:18
Now, if that was truetotta, we'dlyhennys muodosta 'we had' have trucksautot going roundpyöristää the countrymaa,
55
180000
2000
Jos tämä olisi totta,
maata kiertäisi rekkoja
03:20
fillingtäyte people'sihmisten gardenspuutarhat in with soilmaaperä, it'dlyhennys muodosta 'it would' be a fantasticfantastinen businessliiketoiminta.
56
182000
3000
täyttämässä puutarhat maa-aineksella.
Se olisi loistavaa bisnestä.
03:23
But, actuallyitse asiassa, we don't do that.
57
185000
2000
Mutta me emme
toimi näin.
03:25
The massmassa- of this comestulee out of the airilma.
58
187000
3000
Tuolin massa
tulee ilmasta.
03:28
Now, I passedläpäissyt all my biologybiologia examstentit in BritainBritannian.
59
190000
4000
Läpäisin kaikki biologian
kokeeni Britanniassa.
03:32
I passedläpäissyt them really well, but I still cametuli out of schoolkoulu
60
194000
2000
Läpäisin ne hyvin arvosanoin,
mutta silti lähdin koulusta
03:34
thinkingajattelu that that stuffjutut cametuli out of the groundmaa.
61
196000
3000
luullen, että aines tulee maasta.
03:37
SecondToinen one: can you lightvalo a little torch-bulbsoihtu-lamppu with a batteryakku bulbpolttimo and one piecepala of wirejohdin?
62
199000
4000
Seuraava: osaatko sytyttää lampun
paristolla ja johdon pätkällä?
03:41
Yes, you can, and I'll showshow you in a secondtoinen how to do that.
63
203000
2000
Kyllä osaat. Näytän pian,
kuinka se tehdään.
03:43
Now, I have some ratherpikemminkin badhuono newsuutiset,
64
205000
2000
Minulla on huonoja uutisia.
03:45
whichjoka is that I had a piecepala of videovideo- that I was about to showshow you,
65
207000
3000
Aioin näyttää teille videon,
03:48
whichjoka unfortunatelyvalitettavasti -- the soundääni doesn't work in this roomhuone,
66
210000
3000
mutta äänentoisto ei toimi
tässä tilassa.
03:51
so I'm going to describekuvata to you, in truetotta "MontyMonty PythonPython" fashionmuoti,
67
213000
3000
Kerron Monty Python -tyylisesti,
mitä videossa tapahtuu.
03:54
what happenstapahtuu in the videovideo-. And in the videovideo-, a groupryhmä of researcherstutkijat
68
216000
5000
Videossa ryhmä
tutkijoita menee
03:59
go to MITMIT on graduationvalmistumisen day.
69
221000
2000
Massachusettsin
teknilliseen korkeakouluun.
04:01
We chosevalitsin MITMIT because, obviouslyilmeisesti, that's a very long way away
70
223000
3000
Valitsimme MIT:n,
koska se on kaukana täältä,
04:04
from here, and you wouldn'teikö mindmieli too much,
71
226000
2000
joten emme toivottavasti
loukkaa teitä.
04:06
but it sortjärjestellä of worksteokset the samesama way in BritainBritannian
72
228000
3000
Tämä toimii samoin
niin Britanniassa
04:09
and in the WestWest CoastCoast of the USAYHDYSVALLAT.
73
231000
2000
kuin Yhdysvaltojen länsirannikolla.
04:11
And we askedkysyi them these questionskysymykset, and we askedkysyi those questionskysymykset
74
233000
4000
Kysyimme siellä nämä kysymykset
04:15
of sciencetiede graduatesvalmistuneet, and they couldn'tvoineet answervastaus them.
75
237000
2000
vastavalmistuneilta,
eivätkä he tienneet vastauksia.
04:17
And so, there's a wholekoko lot of people sayingsanonta,
76
239000
2000
Monet sanoivat
olevansa yllättyneitä,
04:19
"I'd be very surprisedyllättynyt if you told me that this cametuli out of the airilma.
77
241000
2000
jos selviäisi, että
tämä tuli ilmasta.
04:21
That's very surprisingyllättävä to me." And those are sciencetiede graduatesvalmistuneet.
78
243000
4000
Ja he ovat opiskelleet
tätä alaa.
04:25
And we intercutintercut it with, "We are the premierPremier sciencetiede universityyliopisto in the worldmaailman-,"
79
247000
3000
Me toki muistutamme,
että oma yliopistomme on paras.
04:28
because of British-likeBritish-kuin hubrisylimielisyys.
80
250000
2000
Britit kun uhoavat
mielellään.
04:30
(LaughterNaurua)
81
252000
1000
04:31
And when we gaveantoi graduatevalmistua engineersinsinöörien that questionkysymys,
82
253000
3000
Kun kysyimme asiaa
tuoreilta insinööreiltä,
04:34
they said it couldn'tvoineet be donetehty.
83
256000
2000
he sanoivat, ettei
se onnistuisi.
04:36
And when we gaveantoi them a batteryakku, and a piecepala of wirejohdin, and a bulbpolttimo,
84
258000
4000
Ja kun annoimme heille
pariston, johdon ja lampun,
04:40
and said, "Can you do it?" They couldn'tvoineet do it. Right?
85
262000
4000
ja kysyimme: "Osaatko tämän?",
he eivät osanneet sitä.
04:44
And that's no differenteri from ImperialImperial CollegeCollege in LondonLontoo, by the way,
86
266000
3000
Tilanne on muuten sama
Lontoon Imperial Collegessa.
04:47
it's not some sortjärjestellä of anti-Americananti-amerikkalainen thing going on.
87
269000
4000
Tämä ei ole mikään
Amerikan vastainen lausunto.
04:51
As if. Now, the reasonsyy this mattersasioissa is we paymaksaa lots and lots of moneyraha
88
273000
6000
Niinpä niin.
Tämä on merkittävää siksi,
että käytämme
paljon rahaa koulutukseen,
joten parempi tehdä se oikein.
04:57
for teachingopetus people -- we mightmahti as well get it right.
89
279000
2000
04:59
And there are alsomyös some societalyhteiskunnan reasonssyyt
90
281000
2000
On myös joitain
yhteiskunnallisia syitä,
05:01
why we mightmahti want people to understandymmärtää what it is that's happeninghappening
91
283000
4000
miksi ihmisten olisi hyvä ymmärtää,
miten yhteyttäminen toimii.
05:05
in photosynthesisfotosynteesi. For exampleesimerkki, one halfpuoli of the carbonhiili equationyhtälö
92
287000
3000
Puolet tästä yhtälöstä
on se, kuinka paljon vapautamme.
05:08
is how much we emitpäästää, and the other halfpuoli of the carbonhiili equationyhtälö,
93
290000
3000
Toinen puoli on se,
05:11
as I'm very conscioustajuissaan as a trusteeedunvalvoja of KewKew,
94
293000
2000
ja minä tiedän kasvitieteellisen
puutarhan tukijana,
05:13
is how much things soakliota up, and they soakliota up carbonhiili dioxidedioksidi out of the atmosphereilmapiiri.
95
295000
5000
kuinka paljon kasvit
imevät hiilidioksidia ilmakehästä.
Tätä kasvit tekevät elääkseen.
05:18
That's what plantskasvit actuallyitse asiassa do for a livingelävä.
96
300000
3000
05:21
And, for any Finnishsuomi people in the audienceyleisö, this is a Finnishsuomi punsanaleikki:
97
303000
3000
Tässä suomalaiselle yleisölle
sanaleikki:
05:24
we are, bothmolemmat literallykirjaimellisesti and metaphoricallyvertauskuvallisesti, skatingluistelu on thinohut icejää
98
306000
5000
Kävelemme kaikin tavoin
heikoilla jäillä,
05:29
if we don't understandymmärtää that kindkiltti of thing.
99
311000
3000
jos emme ymmärrä tätä asiaa.
05:32
Now, here'stässä how you do the batteryakku and the bulbpolttimo.
100
314000
2000
Sitten siirrytään
paristoon ja lamppuun.
05:34
It's so easyhelppo, isn't it? Of coursekurssi, you all knewtunsi that.
101
316000
4000
Onpa helppoa, vai mitä?
Te tietenkin osasitte tämän.
05:38
But if you haven'tole playedpelataan with a batteryakku and a bulbpolttimo,
102
320000
2000
Jos et ole leikkinyt paristolla
ja lampulla,
05:40
if you've only seennähdään a circuitpiiri diagramkaavio,
103
322000
2000
jos olet vain
nähnyt piirikaavion,
05:42
you mightmahti not be ablepystyä to do that, and that's one of the problemsongelmia.
104
324000
4000
et välttämättä osaa tätä.
Se onkin yksi ongelma.
05:46
So, why is it hotterlämpimämpää in summerkesä than in wintertalvi-?
105
328000
2000
Miksi kesällä on kuumempaa
kuin talvella?
05:48
We learnoppia, as childrenlapset, that you get closerlähemmäksi to something that's hotkuuma,
106
330000
3000
Opimme lapsina, että jos menet
liian lähelle jotakin kuumaa,
05:51
and it burnspalovammat you. It's a very powerfulvoimakas bitbitti of learningoppiminen,
107
333000
3000
se polttaa.
Tämä on rankka läksy,
joka opitaan hyvin varhain.
05:54
and it happenstapahtuu prettynätti earlyaikaisin on.
108
336000
2000
05:56
By extensionlaajentaminen, we think to ourselvesitse, "Why it's hotterlämpimämpää in summerkesä than in wintertalvi-
109
338000
3000
Tästä johtuen ajattelemme,
että kesällä on kuumempaa,
05:59
muston pakko be because we're closerlähemmäksi to the SunSun."
110
341000
3000
koska olemme
lähempänä Aurinkoa.
06:02
I promiselupaus you that mostsuurin osa of you will have got that.
111
344000
2000
Vannon, että suurin osa
