ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Apollo Robbins - Gentleman thief
Apollo Robbins will take the phone from your pocket and the ring off your finger, then hand them back to you and (maybe) show you how he did it.

Why you should listen

Pickpocketing is a triumph of craft: a distracting touch with one hand, while the other hand gets to work, and the next thing you know ... where's my wallet? Apollo Robbins is a modern master of picking pockets, possessor of a subtle understanding of human attention, a taste for classic crime, and something he calls "grift sense" -- which, as he told the New Yorker , is “stepping outside yourself and seeing through the other person’s eyes, thinking through the other person’s mind, but it’s happening on a subconscious level.”

Robbins makes a living as an entertainer, speaker and television personality, and he also is the founder of Whizmob Inc., a collective of misdirection experts -- including reformed criminals -- that schools military and law enforcement leaders in fraud and scam tactics. Robbins has also collaborated with academics in his quest to understand how awareness and attention can be manipulated. He's co-author of a 2011 paper that explores something he noticed in his countless hours of practice: people's eyes are more easily misdirected to follow a curve than a straight line.

00:12
Do you think it's possible to control someone's attention?
0
586
4770
Croyez-vous qu'il soit possible de contrôler
l'attention de quelqu'un?
00:17
Even more than that,
1
5356
1144
Et plus encore,
00:18
what about predicting human behavior?
2
6500
3316
si on pouvait prédire le comportement humain?
00:21
I think those are interesting ideas, if you could.
3
9816
2219
Ces idées me semblent intéressantes,
si c'était possible.
00:24
I mean, for me, that would be the perfect superpower,
4
12035
2127
00:26
actually kind of an evil way of approaching it.
5
14162
2417
00:28
But for myself, in the past, I've spent the last 20 years
6
16579
3164
Par exemple, pour ma part ,
j'ai passé les 20 dernières années
00:31
studying human behavior from a rather unorthodox way:
7
19743
3502
à étudier le comportement humain
de façon peu orthodoxe:
00:35
picking pockets.
8
23245
1956
en vous faisant les poches.
00:37
When we think of misdirection,
9
25201
1540
Lorsqu'on imagine des apparences trompeuses,
00:38
we think of something as looking off to the side,
10
26741
2304
00:41
when actually it's often the things that are right in front of us
11
29045
2728
00:43
that are the hardest things to see,
12
31773
1205
soient les plus difficiles à voir,
00:44
the things that you look at every day that you're blinded to.
13
32978
2963
00:47
For example, how many of you still have your cell phones
14
35941
2166
00:50
on you right now?
15
38107
2564
cellulaire sur eux présentement?
00:52
Great. Double-check.
16
40671
1241
Parfait. Vérifiez à nouveau.
00:53
Make sure you still have them on you.
17
41912
1326
Assurez-vous de les avoir encore sur vous.
00:55
I was doing some shopping beforehand.
18
43238
2935
J'étais en train de magasiner auparavant.
00:58
Now you've looked at them probably a few times today,
19
46173
1801
Vous les avez sans doute regardés
à quelques reprises aujourd'hui
00:59
but I'm going to ask you a question about them.
20
47974
1452
01:01
Without looking at your cell phone directly yet,
21
49426
1917
Sans regarder votre cellulaire,
01:03
can you remember the icon in the bottom right corner?
22
51343
4441
01:07
Bring them out, check, and see how accurate you were.
23
55784
2756
Sortez-les, vérifiez, et évaluez l'exactitude
de votre réponse.
01:13
How'd you do? Show of hands. Did we get it?
24
61969
3997
Avez-vous réussi? Levez votre main. L'avez-vous eu?
01:17
Now that you're done looking at those, close them down,
25
65966
2155
Maintenant que vous avez terminé,
vous pouvez les fermer,
01:20
because every phone has something in common.
26
68121
1757
01:21
No matter how you organize the icons,
27
69878
2065
Peu importe comment on met les icônes,
01:23
you still have a clock on the front.
28
71943
1760
01:25
So, without looking at your phone, what time was it?
29
73703
3687
Alors, sans regarder votre cellulaire,
quelle heure indiquait-il?
01:29
You just looked at your clock, right?
30
77390
2083
01:31
It's an interesting idea. Now, I'll ask you to take that a step further with a game of trust.
31
79473
3436
01:34
Close your eyes.
32
82909
1808
Fermez vos yeux.
01:36
I realize I'm asking you to do that while you just heard
33
84717
2648
Je suis conscient que je vous demande
de le faire en sachant
01:39
there's a pickpocket in the room, but close your eyes.
34
87365
3290
01:42
Now, you've been watching me for about 30 seconds.
35
90655
3274
Bon, vous me regardez depuis 30 secondes environ.
01:45
With your eyes closed, what am I wearing?
36
93929
3813
01:49
Make your best guess.
37
97742
1421
Estimez de votre mieux.
01:51
What color is my shirt? What color is my tie?
38
99163
3365
De quelle couleur est ma chemise? Et ma cravate?
01:54
Now open your eyes.
39
102528
1518
Maintenant, ouvrez les yeux.
01:56
By a show of hands, were you right?
40
104046
2620
En levant la main: qui a deviné?
01:58
It's interesting, isn't it? Some of us are a little bit
41
106666
2219
C'est intéressant n'est-ce pas?
Certains d'entre nous ont plus
02:00
more perceptive than others. It seems that way.
42
108885
2003
de perceptions que les autres. C'est comme ça.
02:02
But I have a different theory about that, that model of attention.
43
110888
3014
02:05
They have fancy models of attention, Posner's trinity model of attention.
44
113902
3712
02:09
For me, I like to think of it very simple, like a surveillance system.
45
117614
3187
02:12
It's kind of like you have all these fancy sensors,
46
120801
2962
senseurs complexes,
02:15
and inside your brain is a little security guard.
47
123763
2253
02:18
For me, I like to call him Frank.
48
126016
2266
Pour ma part, j'aime l'appeler Frank.
02:20
So Frank is sitting at a desk.
49
128282
2230
Alors Frank est assis à son bureau.
02:22
He's got all sorts of cool information in front of him,
50
130512
2218
Il a plein d'information trippantes à trier devant lui,
02:24
high-tech equipment, he's got cameras,
51
132730
2019
02:26
he's got a little phone that he can pick up, listen to the ears,
52
134749
3130
02:29
all these senses, all these perceptions.
53
137879
2475
tous ces sens, toutes ces perceptions.
02:32
But attention is what steers your perceptions,
54
140354
2569
02:34
is what controls your reality. It's the gateway to the mind.
55
142923
3653
c'est ce qui contrôle votre réalité.
C'est la porte vers l'esprit.
02:38
If you don't attend to something, you can't be aware of it.
56
146576
2835
02:41
But ironically, you can attend to something without being aware of it.
57
149411
3511
Mais ironiquement, vous pouvez porter votre
attention à quelque chose sans le savoir.
02:44
That's why there's the cocktail effect:
58
152922
1487
02:46
When you're in a party, you're having conversations with someone,
59
154409
2494
Vous êtes dans une soirée, vous avez
une conversation avec quelqu'un
02:48
and yet you can recognize your name
60
156903
1431
02:50
and you didn't even realize you were listening to that.
61
158334
2581
02:52
Now, for my job, I have to play with techniques to exploit this,
62
160915
2943
Bon, pour mon travail, il me faut jouer à des techniques qui me permette d'exploiter ça,
02:55
to play with your attention as a limited resource.
63
163858
3061
de jouer avec votre attention telle
une ressource limitée.
02:58
So if I could control how you spend your attention,
64
166919
3135
Alors si je peux contrôler votre façon
d'utiliser votre attention,
03:02
if I could maybe steal your attention through a distraction.
65
170054
3033
03:05
Now, instead of doing it like misdirection
66
173087
2784
03:07
and throwing it off to the side,
67
175871
1452
03:09
instead, what I choose to focus on is Frank,
68
177323
2580
en remplacement, pourquoi ne pas attirer
l'attention sur Frank,
03:11
to be able to play with the Frank inside your head,
69
179903
2600
03:14
your little security guard,
70
182503
940
votre petit gardien de sécurité,
03:15
and get you, instead of focusing on your external senses,
71
183443
3037
03:18
just to go internal for a second.
72
186480
2885
03:21
So if I ask you to access a memory, like, what is that?
73
189365
3210
03:24
What just happened? Do you have a wallet?
74
192575
1612
Que vient-il d'arriver?
Avez-vous votre porte-monnaie?
03:26
Do you have an American Express in your wallet?
75
194187
1891
Avec vous une carte American Express
dans votre porte-monnaie?
03:28
And when I do that, your Frank turns around.
76
196078
3772
03:31
He accesses the file. He has to rewind the tape.
77
199850
2255
Il accède à la fiche. Il doit revenir en arrière.
03:34
And what's interesting is, he can't rewind the tape
78
202105
2163
03:36
at the same time that he's trying to process new data.
79
204268
2930
03:39
Now, I mean, this sounds like a good theory,
80
207198
1355
03:40
but I could talk for a long time and tell you lots of things,
81
208553
2718
mais je pourrais en parler longtemps et
vous raconter plein de choses,
03:43
and they may be true, a portion of them,
82
211271
1986
et elles seraient vraies,
du moins certaines d'entre elles,
03:45
but I think it's better if I tried to show that to you here live.
83
213257
2730
03:47
So if I come down, I'm going to do a little bit of shopping.
84
215987
2427
Bon, si je descends,
je vais faire un peu de magasinage.
03:50
Just hold still where you are.
85
218414
3509
Prière de rester où vous êtes.
03:55
Hello, how are you? It's lovely to see you.
86
223345
2866
Bonjour, comment allez-vous?
Enchanté de vous voir.
03:58
You did a wonderful job onstage.
87
226211
1418
03:59
You have a lovely watch that doesn't come off very well.
88
227629
1710
Vous avez une jolie montre
qui ne s'enlève pas facilement.
04:01
Do you have your ring as well?
89
229339
1327
Avez-vous une bague aussi?
04:02
Good. Just taking inventory. You're like a buffet.
90
230666
2244
Parfait. Je fais juste l'inventaire.
On dirait un buffet.
04:04
It's hard to tell where to start, there's so many great things.
91
232910
2582
04:07
Hi, how are you? Good to see you.
92
235492
2133
Bonjour, comment allez-vous?
C'est bon de vous voir.
04:09
Hi, sir, could you stand up for me, please? Just right where you are.
93
237625
2849
Bonjour monsieur, pourriez-vous vous lever
s'il-vous-plait? Juste là où vous êtes.
04:12
Oh, you're married. You follow directions well.
94
240474
1669
Ah, vous êtes marié. Vous suivez bien les consignes.
04:14
That's nice to meet you, sir.
95
242143
1183
Enchanté de vous rencontré monsieur.
04:15
You don't have a whole lot inside your pockets. Anything down by the pocket over here?
96
243326
3850
04:19
Hopefully so. Have a seat. There you go. You're doing well.
97
247176
2544
Je l'espère. Asseyez-vous. Voilà.
Vous vous débrouillez bien.
04:21
Hi, sir, how are you?
98
249720
1908
Bonjour monsieur, comment ça va?
04:23
Good to see you, sir. You have a ring, a watch.
99
251628
2030
Enchanté monsieur.
Vous avez une bague, une montre.
04:25
Do you have a wallet on you?
Joe: I don't.
100
253658
2181
Avez vous un porte-monnaie sur vous?
Joe: je n'en ai pas.
04:27
Apollo Robbins: Well, we'll find one for you.
101
255839
1328
Appollo Robbins:
Bon, nous allons vous en trouver un.
04:29
Come on up this way, Joe.
102
257167
1241
Par ici Joe, s'il-vous-plait.
04:30
Give Joe a round of applause.
103
258408
1312
Une bonne ronde d'applaudissements pour Joe.
04:31
Come on up Joe. Let's play a game.
104
259720
1680
Montez ici Joe. Jouons à un jeu.
04:33
(Applause)
105
261400
5037
(Applaudissements)
04:38
Pardon me.
106
266437
2098
Excusez-moi.
04:40
I don't think I need this clicker anymore. You can have that.
107
268535
2116
Je ne pense pas avoir encore besoin
de ce bouton. Je vous le laisse.
04:42
Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
108
270651
1952
Merci beaucoup, c'est très apprécié.
04:44
Come on up to the stage, Joe. Let's play a little game now.
109
272603
1959
Montez sur la scène, Joe.
Jouons à ce petit jeu maintenant.
04:46
Do you have anything in your front pockets?
Joe: Money.
110
274562
3713
04:50
AR: Money. All right, let's try that.
111
278275
2070
AR: De l'argent. D'accord, allons-y avec ça.
04:52
Can you stand right over this way for me?
112
280345
2714
04:55
Turn around and, let's see,
113
283059
1398
Tournez vous et, bon, voyons,
04:56
if I give you something that belongs to me,
114
284457
1645
04:58
this is just something I have, a poker chip.
115
286102
3925
05:02
Hold out your hand for me. Watch it kind of closely.
116
290027
2759
Tendez la main pour moi. Regardez-le d'assez près.
05:04
Now this is a task for you to focus on.
117
292786
2534
Maintenant je vous demande
de vous concentrer sur cette tâche.
05:07
Now you have your money in your front pocket here?
Joe: Yup.
118
295320
2832
Bon vous avez votre argent dans votre
poche de devant ?
Joe: Ouaip.
05:10
AR: Good. I'm not going to actually put my hand in your pocket.
119
298152
2151
AR: Bon. Je ne vais pas aller mettre
mes mains dans votre poche.
05:12
I'm not ready for that kind of commitment.
120
300303
1870
05:14
One time a guy had a hole in his pocket,
121
302173
1405
05:15
and that was rather traumatizing for me.
122
303578
2077
05:17
I was looking for his wallet and he gave me his phone number.
123
305655
1564
05:19
It was a big miscommunication.
124
307219
1600
C'était un énorme malentendu.
05:20
So let's do this simply. Squeeze your hand.
125
308819
3339
Alors allons y simplement. Serrez votre main.
05:24
Squeeze it tight. Do you feel the poker chip in your hand?
Joe: I do.
126
312158
2986
Serrez-la fermement. Sentez-vous le
jeton de poker dans votre main?
Joe: Je le sens.
05:27
AR: Would you be surprised if I could take it out of your hand? Say yes.
127
315144
2482
AR: Seriez-vous surpris si je pouvais
l'enlever de votre main?        Dites oui.
05:29
Joe: Very.
AR: Good.
128
317641
1188
Joe: Extrêmement.
AR: Parfait.
05:30
Open your hand. Thank you very much.
129
318829
2205
Ouvrez votre main,. Merci beaucoup.
05:33
I'll cheat if you give me a chance.
130
321034
1645
05:34
Make it harder for me. Just use your hand.
131
322679
2167
Rendez-ça plus difficile. Utilisez votre main.
05:36
Grab my wrist, but squeeze, squeeze firm.
132
324846
1969
Prenez mon poignet, mais serrez-le, bien fermement.
05:38
Did you see it go?
133
326815
1522
Vous l'avez vu partir?
05:40
Joe: No.
AR: No, it's not here. Open your hand.
134
328337
1984
Joe: Non.
AR: Non, il n'y est pas. Ouvrez votre main.
05:42
See, while we're focused on the hand,
135
330321
1416
Voyez, en vous concentrant sur la main,
05:43
it's sitting on your shoulder right now.
136
331737
3196
ça s'est déplacé vers votre épaule juste là.
05:46
Go ahead and take it off.
137
334933
1633
Allez-y et enlevez-le.
05:48
Now, let's try that again.
138
336566
1472
Bon, on essaie encore.
05:50
Hold your hand out flat. Open it up all the way.
139
338038
1876
Tendez votre main là devant.
Ouvrez-la complètement.
05:51
Put your hand up a little bit higher, but watch it close there, Joe.
140
339914
2512
Tenez-la un peu plus haut,
mais faites-y bien attention, Joe.
05:54
See, if I did it slowly, it'd be back on your shoulder.
141
342426
3557
Voyez, si j'y allais lentement,
il retournerait sur votre épaule.
05:57
(Laughter)
142
345983
1440
(Rires)
05:59
Joe, we're going to keep doing this till you catch it.
143
347423
2327
06:01
You're going to get it eventually. I have faith in you.
144
349750
1538
Vous allez comprendre éventuellement.
J'ai foi en vous.
06:03
Squeeze firm. You're human, you're not slow.
145
351288
2742
Serrez fermement. Vous êtes humain,
vous n'êtes pas lent.
06:06
It's back on your shoulder.
146
354030
2370
C'est de retour sur votre épaule.
06:08
You were focused on your hand. That's why you were distracted.
147
356400
1879
Votre attention se portait sur votre main.
Voilà pourquoi vous étiez distrait.
06:10
While you were watching this, I couldn't quite get your watch off. It was difficult.
148
358279
3074
06:13
Yet you had something inside your front pocket.
149
361353
1778
Pourtant vous aviez quelque chose dans
votre poche de devant.
06:15
Do you remember what it was?
150
363131
2138
06:17
Joe: Money.
151
365269
977
Joe: de l'argent.
06:18
AR: Check your pocket. See if it's still there. Is it still there? (Laughter)
152
366246
3440
AR: Vérifiez votre poche. Voyez si il y en a encore.
C'est encore là ? (Rires)
06:21
Oh, that's where it was. Go ahead and put it away.
153
369686
1969
Ah, voici où c'était rendu. Allez-y et jetez-le.
06:23
We're just shopping. This trick's more about the timing, really.
154
371655
2588
06:26
I'm going to try to push it inside your hand.
155
374243
1472
06:27
Put your other hand on top for me, would you?
156
375715
3033
Mettez votre autre main par dessus-moi, d'accord?
06:30
It's amazingly obvious now, isn't it?
157
378748
1620
06:32
It looks a lot like the watch I was wearing, doesn't it?
158
380368
2122
06:34
(Laughter) (Applause)
159
382490
2060
(Rires) (Applaudissements)
06:36
Joe: That's pretty good. That's pretty good.
AR: Oh, thanks.
160
384550
4724
Joe: C'est vraiment bon. C'est vraiment bon.
AR: Ah, merci.
06:41
But it's only a start. Let's try it again, a little bit differently.
161
389274
2856
Mais ce n'est qu'un début.
Essayons encore, un peu différemment.
06:44
Hold your hands together. Put your other hand on top.
162
392130
2296
Joignez vos mains ensemble.
Mettez votre autre main sur le dessus.
06:46
Now if you're watching this little token,
163
394426
1911
Bon, si vous regardez ce petit jeton,
06:48
this obviously has become a little target. It's like a red herring.
164
396337
2883
06:51
If we watch this kind of close, it looks like it goes away.
165
399220
2353
Si on le regarde d'assez près, on dirait qu'il s'éloigne.
06:53
It's not back on your shoulder.
166
401573
2100
06:55
It falls out of the air, lands right back in the hand.
167
403673
2327
06:58
Did you see it go?
168
406000
2213
Vous l'avez vu aller?
07:00
Yeah, it's funny. We've got a little guy. He's union. He works up there all day.
169
408213
3353
Oui, c'est drôle. On a un petit bonhomme.
Syndiqué. Il travaille là-haut toute la journée.
07:03
If I did it slowly, if it goes straightaway,
170
411566
1836
Si j'y allais lentement, si ça y va directement,
07:05
it lands down by your pocket. I believe is it in this pocket, sir?
171
413402
2744
07:08
No, don't reach in your pocket. That's a different show.
172
416146
2225
Non, ne fouillez pas votre poche.
C'est pour un autre spectacle.
07:10
So -- (Squeaking noise) -- that's rather strange. They have shots for that.
173
418371
3105
Bon -- (Couic couic) -- c'est plûtot bizarre.
Ils sont des piqûres pour soigner ça.
07:13
Can I show them what that is? That's rather bizarre. Is this yours, sir?
174
421476
3124
07:16
I have no idea how that works. We'll just send that over there.
175
424600
2278
Je sais pas commenat ça fonctionne. On va juste l'envoyer là-bas.
07:18
That's great. I need help with this one.
176
426878
1932
07:20
Step over this way for me.
177
428810
1582
Placez-vous par ici s'il-vous-plait.
07:22
Now don't run away. You had something down by your pants pocket.
178
430392
2846
07:25
I was checking mine. I couldn't find everything,
179
433238
2216
Je fouillais les miennes. J'ai pas pu rien trouver,
07:27
but I noticed you had something here.
180
435454
1305
07:28
Can I feel the outside of your pocket for a moment?
181
436759
2372
07:31
Down here I noticed this. Is this something of yours, sir?
182
439131
2258
En bas ici, j'ai remarqué. C'est à vous monsieur?
07:33
Is this? I have no idea. That's a shrimp.
183
441389
2645
C'est quoi? Aucune idée. C'est une crevette.
07:36
Joe: Yeah. I'm saving it for later.
184
444034
2126
07:38
AR: You've entertained all of these people in a wonderful way,
185
446160
3048
07:41
better than you know.
186
449208
1165
mieux que vous ne le croyez.
07:42
So we'd love to give you this lovely watch as a gift. (Laughter)
187
450373
3761
Alors on aimerait vous offrir cette
belle montre en cadeau.       (Rires)
07:46
Hopefully it matches his taste.
188
454134
1388
Souhaitons qu'elle soit à son goût.
07:47
But also, we have a couple of other things,
189
455522
1723
07:49
a little bit of cash, and then we have a few other things.
190
457245
3243
07:52
These all belong to you,
191
460488
1433
Ils vous appartiennent tous,
07:53
along with a big round of applause from all your friends. (Applause)
192
461921
2959
(Applaudissements)
07:56
Joe, thank you very much.
193
464880
1587
Joe, merci beaucoup.
07:58
(Applause)
194
466467
7396
(Applaudissements)
08:05
So, same question I asked you before,
195
473863
2524
Bon, voici la même question qu'avant,
08:08
but this time you don't have to close your eyes.
196
476387
3016
08:11
What am I wearing?
197
479403
2445
Qu'est-ce que je porte?
08:13
(Laughter)
198
481848
2891
(Rires)
08:16
(Applause)
199
484739
5811
(Applaudissements)
08:22
Attention is a powerful thing.
200
490550
2349
L'attention est une force puissante.
08:24
Like I said, it shapes your reality.
201
492899
2799
08:27
So, I guess I'd like to pose that question to you.
202
495698
2621
08:30
If you could control somebody's attention,
203
498319
1871
08:32
what would you do with it?
204
500190
2219
qu'en feriez-vous?
08:34
Thank you.
205
502409
1302
Merci.
08:35
(Applause)
206
503711
6477
(Applaudissements)
