Why you should listen

Joe Kowan is a Boston-based musician and graphic designer who has been struggling with stage fright since he first started writing songs at age 27. Despite his adorably expressed fears, he charms audiences with his own style of quirky folk and acoustic hip-hop, by turns poignant, salacious and comical. In 2009 he released the gangsta' arts and crafts video for his original song “Crafty,” and in 2011 he was a finalist in the USA Songwriting Competition.

Kowan is a senior graphic designer on State Street Global Marketing’s Brand Strategy team. With a BFA in sculpture and design, his work explores diverse areas of design including scenic, print, environmental design and wayfinding.

Joe Kowan: How I beat stage fright

Joe Kowan: Joe Kowan: Comment j'ai vaincu mon trac

Filmed:

Joe Kowan: I have stage fright.

1497
J'ai le trac.
00:14
I've always had stage fright,
1
2074
1493
J'ai toujours eu le trac,
00:15
and not just a little bit,
2
3567
1828
et pas qu'un peu,
00:17
it's a big bit.
3
5395
1791
j'en ai même beaucoup.
00:19
And it didn't even matter until I was 27.
4
7186
2793
ça n'a jamais eu aucune importance
jusqu'à mes 27 ans.
00:21
That's when I started writing songs, and even then
5
9979
2558
00:24
I only played them for myself.
6
12537
1802
je jouais pour moi-même.
00:26
Just knowing my roommates were in the
same house made me uncomfortable.
7
14339
3745
simplement savoir que mes colocataires étaient à la maison me mettait mal à l'aise.
00:30
But after a couple of years,
just writing songs wasn't enough.
8
18084
2807
Après quelques années, écrire des chansons
n'était pas assez.
00:32
I had all these stories and ideas,
and I wanted to share them with people,
9
20891
3019
00:35
but physiologically, I couldn't do it.
10
23910
3306
mais physiologiquement, je n'y arrivais pas.
00:39
I had this irrational fear.
11
27216
2926
J'avais cette peur irrationnelle,
00:42
But the more I wrote, and the more I practiced,
12
30142
2159
00:44
the more I wanted to perform.
13
32301
1190
Et plus je voulais jouer sur scène.
00:45
So on the week of my 30th birthday,
14
33491
2057
Donc la semaine de mon trentième anniversaire.
00:47
I decided I was going to go to this local open mic,
15
35548
2953
00:50
and put this fear behind me.
16
38501
1715
et de jeter ailleurs cette peur.
00:52
Well, when I got there, it was packed.
17
40216
2857
00:55
There were like 20 people there.
18
43073
1974
Il y avait genre vingt personnes.
00:57
(Laughter)
19
45047
1883
(rires)
00:58
And they all looked angry.
20
46930
2607
et ils semblaient tous fâchés.
01:01
But I took a deep breath, and I signed up to play,
21
49537
3601
Mais j'ai respiré un grand coup
et je me suis inscrit pour jouer,
01:05
and I felt pretty good.
22
53138
1492
et je me sentais plutôt bien.
01:06
Pretty good, until about 10 minutes before my turn,
23
54630
3061
plutôt bien, jusqu'à dix minutes avant mon tour,
01:09
when my whole body rebelled, and
this wave of anxiety just washed over me.
24
57691
5464
01:15
Now, when you experience fear,
your sympathetic nervous system kicks in.
25
63155
3555
quand on a peur, le système nerveux
sympathique intervient.
01:18
So you have a rush of adrenaline,
your heart rate increases,
26
66710
2843
01:21
your breathing gets faster.
27
69553
1453
la respiration accélère.
01:23
Next your non-essential systems start
to shut down, like digestion. (Laughter)
28
71006
6172
01:29
So your mouth gets dry, and blood is routed
away from your extremities,
29
77178
3364
la bouche se sèche,
le sang n'arrive plus aux extrémités,
01:32
so your fingers don't work anymore.
30
80542
2600
et les doigts ne fonctionnent plus.
01:35
Your pupils dilate, your muscles contract,
your Spidey sense tingles,
31
83142
3132
01:38
basically your whole body is trigger-happy.
(Laughter)
32
86274
5174
(Rires)
01:43
That condition is not conducive
to performing folk music.
33
91448
4783
01:48
(Laughter)
34
96231
1569
(rires)
01:49
I mean, your nervous system is an idiot.
35
97800
2632
01:52
Really? Two hundred thousand years of human evolution, and it still can't tell the difference
36
100432
3810
Vraiment?
01:56
between a saber tooth tiger and 20 folksingers
37
104242
2372
01:58
on a Tuesday night open mic?
38
106614
2071
à une nuit avec micro libre?
02:00
(Laughter)
39
108685
1431
(Rires)
02:02
I have never been more terrified -- until now.
40
110116
4057
Je n'avais jamais été aussi terrorisé,
jusqu'à maintenant.
02:06
(Laughter and cheers)
41
114173
5831
(Rires et cris d'encouragement)
02:15
So then it was my turn,
42
123248
2509
quand mon tour arriva,
02:17
and somehow, I get myself onto
the stage, I start my song,
43
125757
3086
02:20
I open my mouth to sing the first line,
44
128843
2637
02:23
and this completely horrible vibrato --
45
131480
1963
02:25
you know, when your voice wavers --
comes streaming out.
46
133443
2487
vous savez, quand la voix tremble.
02:27
And this is not the good kind of vibrato,
like an opera singer has,
47
135930
2613
02:30
this is my whole body just convulsing with fear.
48
138543
2694
02:33
I mean, it's a nightmare.
49
141237
1651
je veux dire, c'est un cauchemar.
02:34
I'm embarrassed, the audience
is clearly uncomfortable,
50
142888
2468
02:37
they're focused on my discomfort.
51
145356
2353
et il concentré sur mon malaise.
02:39
It was so bad.
52
147709
3775
C'était terrible.
02:43
But that was my first real experience
as a solo singer-songwriter.
53
151484
3937
Celle là fut ma première expérience
en tant que chanteur-compositeur.
02:47
And something good did happen --
I had the tiniest little glimpse
54
155421
3015
02:50
of that audience connection that I was hoping for.
55
158436
2483
02:52
And I wanted more. But I knew
I had to get past this nervousness.
56
160919
4008
02:56
That night I promised myself:
I would go back every week
57
164927
3170
Cette nuit, je promis à moi-même
de revenir chaque semaine,
03:00
until I wasn't nervous anymore.
58
168097
1935
jusqu'à dominer mon trac.
03:02
And I did. I went back every single week,
59
170032
2883
et c'est ce que j'ai fait. Je retournai chaque semaine
03:04
and sure enough, week after week,
60
172915
3815
Et comme prévu, semaine après semaine,
03:08
it didn't get any better. The same
thing happened every week. (Laughter)
61
176730
4170
ça n'allait pas mieux. La même chose
arrivait toutes les semaines. (Rires)
03:12
I couldn't shake it.
62
180900
1948
03:14
And that's when I had an epiphany.
63
182848
1673
03:16
And I remember it really well, because I
don't have a lot of epiphanies. (Laughter)
64
184521
6011
(Rires)
03:22
All I had to do was write a song
that exploits my nervousness.
65
190532
3629
03:26
That only seems authentic when I have stage fright,
66
194161
2122
03:28
and the more nervous I was,
67
196283
1288
Plus j'avais le trac,
03:29
the better the song would be. Easy.
68
197571
2589
Meilleure aurait été la chanson.
Facile.
03:32
So I started writing a song about having stage fright.
69
200160
4829
donc je commençais à écrire une chanson
sur mon trac.
03:36
First, fessing up to the problem,
70
204989
2061
Avant tout en confessant le problème,
03:39
the physical manifestations, how I would feel,
71
207050
1828
les manifestations physiques, comment je me sentais,
03:40
how the listener might feel.
72
208878
1429
comment le spectateur aurait pu se sentir.
03:42
And then accounting for things like my shaky voice,
73
210307
2608
03:44
and I knew I would be singing about a
half-octave higher than normal,
74
212915
2932
je savais que j'aurais chanté
une octave plus haut que d'habitude,
03:47
because I was nervous.
75
215847
2114
parce que j'étais nerveux.
03:49
By having a song that explained
what was happening to me,
76
217961
3072
03:53
while it was happening,
77
221033
1487
pendant que ça se passait,
03:54
that gave the audience permission to think about it.
78
222520
1863
03:56
They didn't have to feel bad
for me because I was nervous,
79
224383
2761
03:59
they could experience that with me,
80
227144
1718
ils pouvaient l'avoir avec moi,
04:00
and we were all one big happy, nervous,
uncomfortable family. (Laughter)
81
228862
5249
04:06
By thinking about my audience,
by embracing and exploiting my problem,
82
234111
4809
04:10
I was able to take something
that was blocking my progress,
83
238920
2935
j'ai su transformer quelque chose qui
bloquait mon progrès
04:13
and turn it into something that
was essential for my success.
84
241855
3937
04:17
And having the stage fright song let
me get past that biggest issue
85
245792
3020
04:20
right in the beginning of a performance.
86
248812
1818
dès le début d'une interprétation.
04:22
And then I could move on,
and play the rest of my songs
87
250630
1544
Ensuite, je pouvais continuer à jouer
le reste des chansons
04:24
with just a little bit more ease.
88
252174
3254
un peu plus facilement.
04:27
And eventually, over time, I didn't
have to play the stage fright song at all.
89
255428
6276
Et à la fin. je n'eus même plus besoin
de chanter la chanson du trac.
04:33
Except for when I was really
nervous, like now. (Laughter)
90
261704
5720
(Rires)
04:40
Would it be okay if I played the
stage fright song for you?
91
268945
2725
ça vous dérange si je joue
la chanson du trac pour vous?
04:43
(Applause)
92
271670
4992
(Applaudissements)
04:52
Can I have a sip of water?
93
280753
2962
Est-ce-que je pourrais avoir de l'eau?
04:55
(Music)
94
283715
3951
(Musique)
05:00
Thank you.
95
288143
2377
Merci.
05:07
♫ I'm not joking, you know, ♫
96
295442
2921
♫ Je ne rigole pas, vous savez ♫
05:10
♫ this stage fright is real. ♫
97
298363
5628
♫ Cette peur est réelle ♫
05:15
♫ And if I'm up here trembling and singing, ♫
98
303991
3211
05:19
♫ well, you'll know how I feel. ♫
99
307202
4346
♫ Vous savez comment je me sens. ♫
05:23
♫ And the mistake I'd be making, ♫
100
311548
3920
♫ Et les erreurs que je vais faire, ♫
05:27
♫ the tremolo caused by my whole body shaking. ♫
101
315468
3928
♫ le vibrato de mon corps qui tremble. ♫
05:31
♫ As you sit there feeling embarrassed for me, ♫
102
319396
3467
05:34
♫ well, you don't have to be. ♫
103
322863
3046
♫ eh ben, vous ne devez pas.♫
05:37
♫ Well, maybe just a little bit. ♫
104
325909
2515
♫ Ok, peut-être un petit peu… ♫
05:40
(Laughter)
105
328424
1401
(Rires)
05:41
♫ And maybe I'll try to imagine
you all without clothes. ♫
106
329825
7879
05:49
♫ But singing in front of all naked strangers
scares me more than anyone knows. ♫
107
337704
7873
05:57
♫ Not to discuss this at length, ♫
108
345577
3953
06:01
♫ but my body image was never my strength. ♫
109
349530
5245
♫ mais l'image que j'ai de mon corps
n'a j'amais été ma spécialité. ♫
06:06
♫ So frankly, I wish that you all would get dressed, ♫
110
354775
3538
06:10
♫ I mean, you're not even really naked. ♫
111
358313
4890
06:15
♫ And I'm the one with the problem. ♫
112
363203
3343
06:18
♫ And you tell me, don't worry
so much, you'll be great. ♫
113
366546
7268
♫ Et vous me dites, ne t'en fais pas trop,
tu vas être génial. ♫
06:25
♫ But I'm the one living with me ♫
114
373814
2804
06:28
♫ and I know how I get. ♫
115
376618
2318
♫ et je sais ce que je ressens ♫
06:30
♫ Your advice is gentle but late. ♫
116
378936
4144
06:35
♫ If not just a bit patronizing. ♫
117
383080
3449
♫ Peut-être même un peu paternaliste. ♫
06:38
♫ And that sarcastic tone doesn't
help me when I sing. ♫
118
386529
4832
06:43
♫ But we shouldn't talk about
these things right now, ♫
119
391361
3888
06:47
♫ really, I'm up on stage, and
you're in the crowd. Hi. ♫
120
395249
6887
Salut. ♫
06:54
♫ And I'm not making fun of
unnurtured, irrrational fear, ♫
121
402136
9223
07:03
♫ and if I wasn't ready to face this, ♫
122
411359
2916
07:06
♫ I sure as hell wouldn't be here. ♫
123
414275
4532
♫ je ne serais certainement pas ici. ♫
07:10
♫ But if I belt one note out clearly, ♫
124
418807
5138
♫ Mais si je chantais une bonne note, ♫
07:15
♫ you'll know I'm recovering slowly but surely. ♫
125
423945
4286
07:20
♫ And maybe next week, I'll set my guitar ringin' ♫
126
428231
3963
07:24
♫ my voice clear as water, and everyone singin'. ♫
127
432194
4354
07:28
♫ But probably I'll just get up and start groovin', ♫
128
436548
3767
07:32
♫ my vocal cords movin', ♫
129
440315
3407
♫ Mes cordes vocales en mouvement, ♫
07:35
♫ at speeds slightly faster than sound. ♫
130
443722
8363
07:48
(Applause)
131
456024

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Joe Kowan - Musician and graphic designer
By day he's a graphic designer, and by night Joe Kowan is a quirky folk singer-songwriter.
