ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Bertrand Piccard - Solar adventurer
Bertrand Piccard circumnavigated the Earth in a hot-air balloon. Now he wants to circle it in an airplane powered only by solar energy.

Why you should listen

Bertrand Piccard was born in a family of firsts. His father, Jacques, together with Dan Walsh of the US, was the first man to reach the deepest point of the world's oceans, the Mariana Trench, in 1960. Almost 30 years earlier, his grandfather, Auguste, first ballooned into the stratosphere. While they went up and down, Bertrand went horizontal and in 1999, together with Brian Jones of Britain, completed the first-ever nonstop balloon circumnavigation of the globe, flying more than 45,000 km in 20 days.

Now, in a hangar near Zurich, a team of scientists and engineers around Piccard and co-pilot André Borschberg is building Solar Impulse, an unconventional aircraft designed to circumnavigate the Earth powered by solar energy, flying day and night (yes, when the Sun is "off"). The prototype has the weight of a car but the wingspan of an Airbus. Solar Impulse has successfully flown from Spain to Morocco and across the United States. The next trip: circumnavigation.

Piccard is also the founder of Winds of Hope, an organization to combat neglected diseases in children, and a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Population Fund.

Well, I learned a lot of things about ballooning,
0
0
4000
00:19
especially at the end of these balloon flights
1
4000
4000
00:23
around the world I did with Brian Jones.
2
8000
2000
00:25
When I took this picture,
3
10000
2000
Quand j'ai pris cette photo,
00:27
the window was frozen because of the moisture of the night.
4
12000
4000
00:31
And on the other side there was a rising sun.
5
16000
2000
00:33
So, you see that on the other side of ice
6
18000
4000
00:37
you have the unknown,
7
22000
2000
vous avez l'inconnu,
00:39
you have the non-obvious,
8
24000
3000
00:42
you have the non-seen,
9
27000
2000
vous avez l'invisible,
00:44
for the people who don't dare
10
29000
2000
pour les personnes qui n'osent pas
00:46
to go through the ice.
11
31000
2000
passer à travers la glace.
00:48
There are so many people
12
33000
2000
Il y a tant de gens
00:50
who prefer to suffer in the ice they know
13
35000
3000
00:53
instead of taking the risk of going through the ice
14
38000
3000
00:56
to see what there is on the other side.
15
41000
3000
pour regarder ce qu'il y a de l'autre côté.
00:59
And I think that's one of the main problems of our society.
16
44000
4000
01:03
We learn, maybe not the famous TED audience,
17
48000
3000
01:06
but so many other people learn,
18
51000
3000
mais tellement d'autres personnes apprennent
01:09
that the unknown, the doubts,
19
54000
2000
que l'inconnu, les doutes,
01:11
the question marks are dangerous.
20
56000
2000
les points d'interrogation sont dangereux.
01:13
And we have to resist to the changes.
21
58000
3000
Et que nous devons résister aux changements.
01:16
We have to keep everything under control.
22
61000
4000
Nous devons garder tout sous contrôle.
01:20
Well, the unknown is part of life.
23
65000
3000
01:23
And in that sense, ballooning is a beautiful metaphor.
24
68000
4000
01:27
Because in the balloon, like in life,
25
72000
3000
01:30
we go very well in unforeseen directions.
26
75000
3000
01:33
We want to go in a direction,
27
78000
2000
Nous voulons aller dans une direction,
01:35
but the winds push us in another direction, like in life.
28
80000
3000
01:38
And as long as we fight horizontally,
29
83000
3000
01:41
against life, against the winds,
30
86000
3000
contre la vie, contre les vents,
01:44
against what's happening to us,
31
89000
2000
contre ce qui nous arrive,
01:46
life is a nightmare.
32
91000
3000
la vie est un cauchermar.
01:49
How do we steer a balloon?
33
94000
2000
Comment dirigeons-nous une montgolfière?
01:51
By understanding that the atmosphere
34
96000
2000
En comprenant que l'atmosphère
01:53
is made out of several different layers of wind
35
98000
3000
01:56
which all have different direction.
36
101000
3000
qui vont dans toutes les directions.
01:59
So, then, we understand that if we want to change our trajectory,
37
104000
3000
02:02
in life, or in the balloon,
38
107000
3000
dans la vie, ou en ballon,
02:05
we have to change altitude.
39
110000
2000
nous devons changer d'altitude.
02:07
Changing altitude, in life,
40
112000
2000
Changer d'altitude, dans la vie,
02:09
that means raising to another psychological, philosophical,
41
114000
4000
ça veut dire s'élever à une autre niveau psychologique, philosophique
02:13
spiritual level.
42
118000
2000
et spirituel.
02:15
But how do we do that?
43
120000
2000
Mais comment peut-on faire?
02:17
In ballooning, or in life,
44
122000
2000
En montgolfière, ou dans la vie,
02:19
how do we change altitude?
45
124000
2000
comment peut-on changer d'altitude?
02:21
How do we go from the metaphor
46
126000
2000
Comment passer de la métaphore
02:23
to something more practical that we can really
47
128000
2000
02:25
use every day?
48
130000
2000
utiliser tous les jours?
02:27
Well, in a balloon it's easy, we have ballast.
49
132000
2000
02:29
And when we drop the ballast overboard we climb.
50
134000
5000
02:34
Sand, water, all the equipment we don't need anymore.
51
139000
4000
02:38
And I think in life it should be exactly like this.
52
143000
3000
02:41
You know, when people speak about pioneering spirit,
53
146000
3000
02:44
very often they believe that pioneers
54
149000
2000
très souvent, ils croient que les pionniers
02:46
are the ones who have new ideas.
55
151000
2000
sont ceux qui ont de nouvelles idées.
02:48
It's not true.
56
153000
2000
Ce n'est pas vrai.
02:50
The pioneers are not the ones who have new ideas,
57
155000
2000
02:52
because new ideas are so easy to have.
58
157000
2000
02:54
We just close our eyes for a minute we all come back
59
159000
2000
02:56
with a lot of new ideas.
60
161000
2000
avec plein de nouvelles idées.
02:58
No, the pioneer is the one who
61
163000
2000
Non, le pionnier est celui qui
03:00
allows himself to throw overboard a lot of ballast.
62
165000
3000
03:03
Habits, certainties,
63
168000
3000
Des habitudes, des certitudes,
03:06
convictions, exclamation marks,
64
171000
5000
des convictions, des points d'exclamation,
03:11
paradigms, dogmas.
65
176000
2000
des paradigmes, des dogmes.
03:13
And when we are able to do that,
66
178000
2000
03:15
what happens?
67
180000
2000
qu'est-ce qui arrive?
03:17
Life is not anymore
68
182000
2000
La vie n'est plus
03:19
just one line going in one direction
69
184000
4000
seulement une ligne allant dans une direction,
03:23
in one dimension. No.
70
188000
2000
dans une seule dimension. Non.
03:25
Life is going to be made out of all the possible lines
71
190000
4000
03:29
that go in all the possible directions
72
194000
2000
qui vont dans toutes les directions possibles
03:31
in three dimensions.
73
196000
4000
dans les trois dimensions.
03:35
And pioneering spirit will be each time we allow ourselves
74
200000
2000
03:37
to explore this vertical axis.
75
202000
3000
d'explorer cet axe vertical.
03:40
Of course not just like the atmosphere in the balloon,
76
205000
2000
03:42
but in life itself.
77
207000
2000
mais dans la vie elle-même.
03:44
Explore this vertical axis, that means
78
209000
3000
Explorer cet axe vertical, cela veut dire
03:47
explore all the different ways to do,
79
212000
2000
explorer toutes les différentes façons de faire,
03:49
all the different ways to behave, all the different ways to think,
80
214000
4000
03:53
before we find the one that goes in the direction we wish.
81
218000
5000
03:58
This is very practical.
82
223000
2000
Ceci est vraiment pratique.
04:00
This can be in politics.
83
225000
2000
Cela peut être en politique.
04:02
This can be in spirituality.
84
227000
2000
Cela peut être en spiritualité.
04:04
This can be in environment,
85
229000
2000
Cela peut être en environnement,
04:06
in finance, in education of children.
86
231000
3000
en finance , en éducation pour les enfants.
04:09
I deeply believe
87
234000
2000
Je crois sincèrement
04:11
that life is a much greater adventure
88
236000
3000
04:14
if we manage to do politics
89
239000
2000
si nous gérons la politique
04:16
without the trench between the left and the right wing.
90
241000
4000
04:20
Because we will throw away these political dogmas.
91
245000
4000
04:24
I deeply believe that we can make much more protection of the environment
92
249000
4000
04:28
if we get rid -- if we throw overboard
93
253000
3000
si nous nous débarrassons -- si nous jetons par-dessus bord
04:31
this fundamentalism that some of the greens have showed in the past.
94
256000
4000
04:35
And that we can aim for much higher spirituality
95
260000
3000
04:38
if we get rid of the religious dogmas.
96
263000
2000
si nous nous débarrassons des dogmes religieux.
04:40
Throwing overboard, as ballast, to change our direction.
97
265000
4000
04:44
Well, these basically are things I believed in such a long time.
98
269000
3000
04:47
But actually I had to go around the world in a balloon
99
272000
2000
04:49
to be invited to talk about it.
100
274000
2000
04:51
(Laughter)
101
276000
3000
(rires)
04:54
(Applause)
102
279000
6000
(applaudissements)
05:00
It's clear that it's not easy to know which ballast to drop
103
285000
4000
05:04
and which altitude to take. Sometime we need
104
289000
2000
et quelle altitude adopter. Des fois nous avons besoin
05:06
friends, family members or a psychiatrist.
105
291000
3000
05:09
Well, in balloons we need weather men,
106
294000
3000
05:12
the one who calculate the direction of each layer of wind,
107
297000
4000
05:16
at which altitude, in order to help the balloonist.
108
301000
3000
à quelle altitude, pour aider l'aéronaute.
05:19
But sometimes it's very paradoxical.
109
304000
3000
Mais des fois c'est très paradoxal.
05:22
When Brian Jones and I were flying around the world,
110
307000
3000
05:25
the weather man asked us, one day, to fly
111
310000
2000
05:27
quite low, and very slow.
112
312000
3000
très bas, et très lentement.
05:30
And when we calculated we thought we're never going to make it
113
315000
2000
05:32
around the world at that speed.
114
317000
3000
notre tour du monde à cette vitesse.
05:35
So, we disobeyed. We flew much higher, and double the speed.
115
320000
4000
05:39
And I was so proud to have found that jetstream
116
324000
3000
05:42
that I called the weather man,
117
327000
2000
que nous avons appelé le météorologue,
05:44
and I told him, "Hey, guy, don't you think we're good pilots up there?
118
329000
3000
05:47
We fly twice the speed you predicted."
119
332000
3000
05:50
And he told me, "Don't do that. Go down immediately
120
335000
2000
Et il m'a dit: " Ne faites pas ça. Descendez immédiatement
05:52
in order to slow down."
121
337000
2000
afin de vous ralentir."
05:54
And I started to argue. I said, "I'm not going to do that.
122
339000
2000
Et j'ai commencé à discuter. J'ai dit:" Je ne ferai pas ça.
05:56
We don't have enough gas to fly so slow."
123
341000
3000
05:59
And he told me, "Yes, but with the low pressure you have on your left
124
344000
3000
06:02
if you fly too fast, in a couple of hours
125
347000
3000
06:05
you will turn left and end up at the North Pole.
126
350000
2000
06:07
(Laughter)
127
352000
2000
(rires)
06:09
And then he asked me --
128
354000
2000
Et il m'a demandé --
06:11
and this is something I will never forget in my life --
129
356000
3000
06:14
he just asked me, "You're the good pilot up there.
130
359000
3000
06:17
What do you really want? You want to go very fast
131
362000
2000
Qu'est-ce que vous voulez vraiment? Est-ce que vous voulez aller très vite
06:19
in the wrong direction, or slowly in the good direction?
132
364000
3000
06:22
(Laughter)
133
367000
3000
(rires)
06:25
(Applause)
134
370000
2000
(applaudissements)
06:27
And this is why you need weathermen.
135
372000
2000
06:29
This is why you need people with long-term vision.
136
374000
3000
06:32
And this is precisely what fails
137
377000
3000
06:35
in the political visions we have now,
138
380000
3000
06:38
in the political governments.
139
383000
2000
avec nos gouvernements politiques.
06:40
We are burning, as you heard,
140
385000
2000
Nous brûlons, comme vous avez entendu,
06:42
so much energy,
141
387000
2000
tellement d'énergie,
06:44
not understanding that such an unsustainable
142
389000
4000
06:48
way of life cannot last for long.
143
393000
3000
ne peut pas durer plus longtemps.
06:51
So, we went down actually.
144
396000
3000
Donc, nous sommes descendus.
06:54
We slowed down. And we went through moments of fears
145
399000
4000
06:58
because we had no idea how the little amount of gas
146
403000
2000
07:00
we had in the balloon
147
405000
2000
à bord de notre ballon
07:02
could allow us to travel 45,000 kilometers.
148
407000
4000
pouvait nous faire voyager 45 000 kilomètres.
07:06
But we were expected to have doubts; we're expected to have fears.
149
411000
3000
07:09
And actually this is where the adventure really started.
150
414000
3000
07:12
When we were flying over the Sahara and India
151
417000
2000
07:14
it was nice holidays.
152
419000
2000
c'était de belles vacances.
07:16
We could land anytime and fly back home with an airplane.
153
421000
3000
07:19
In the middle of the Pacific,
154
424000
2000
Dans le milieu du Pacifique,
07:21
when you don't have the good winds, you cannot land,
155
426000
2000
07:23
you cannot go back.
156
428000
2000
vous ne pouvez pas faire demi-tour.
07:25
That's a crisis.
157
430000
2000
C'est la crise.
07:27
That's the moment when you have to wake up
158
432000
2000
07:29
from the automatic way of thinking.
159
434000
2000
de cette façon automatique de penser.
07:31
That's the moment when you have to motivate
160
436000
2000
07:33
your inner potential,
161
438000
2000
votre potentiel intérieur,
07:35
your creativity.
162
440000
2000
votre créativité.
07:37
That's when you throw out all the ballast,
163
442000
2000
07:39
all the certainties,
164
444000
2000
toutes les certitudes,
07:41
in order to adapt to the new situation.
165
446000
2000
pour vous adapter à la nouvelle situation.
07:43
And actually, we changed completely our flight plan.
166
448000
3000
07:46
We changed completely our strategy.
167
451000
2000
Nous avons changé complètement de stratégie.
07:48
And after 20 days we landed successfully in Egypt.
168
453000
3000
07:51
But if I show you this picture
169
456000
2000
Mais si je vous montre cette photo
07:53
it's not to tell you how happy we were.
170
458000
3000
07:56
It's to show you how much gas was left
171
461000
2000
07:58
in the last bottles.
172
463000
2000
dans nos dernières bouteilles.
08:00
We took off with 3.7 tons of liquid propane.
173
465000
5000
08:05
We landed with 40 kilos.
174
470000
4000
Nous avons atterri avec 40 kilos.
08:09
When I saw that, I made a promise to myself.
175
474000
3000
08:12
I made a promise that the next time I would fly around the world,
176
477000
3000
08:15
it would be with no fuel,
177
480000
3000
ça serait sans carburant,
08:18
independent from fossil energies,
178
483000
3000
indépendamment des énergies fossiles,
08:21
in order to be safe,
179
486000
3000
afin d'être sûr
08:24
not to be threatened by the fuel gauge.
180
489000
2000
08:26
I had no idea how it was possible.
181
491000
3000
Je n'avais aucune idée si c'était possible.
08:29
I just thought it's a dream and I want to do it.
182
494000
4000
08:33
And when the capsule of my balloon was introduced
183
498000
3000
08:36
officially in the Air and Space Museum in Washington,
184
501000
2000
offciellement au Air and Space Museum à Washington,
08:38
together with the airplane of Charles Lindbergh,
185
503000
2000
08:40
with Apollo 11, with the Wright Brothers' Flyer,
186
505000
2000
d'Apollo 11, du "Flier" des frères Wright,
08:42
with Chuck Yeager's 61,
187
507000
3000
du 61 de Chuck Yeager,
08:45
I had really a thought then.
188
510000
2000
08:47
I thought, well, the 20th century, that was brilliant.
189
512000
2000
08:49
It allowed to do all those things there.
190
514000
3000
08:52
But it will not be possible in the future any more.
191
517000
3000
08:55
It takes too much energy. It will cost too much.
192
520000
3000
Cela prend trop d'énergie. Cela coûte trop cher.
08:58
It will be prohibited
193
523000
2000
Cela sera interdit
09:00
because we'll have to save our natural resources
194
525000
2000
09:02
in a few decades from now.
195
527000
2000
d'ici quelques décennies.
09:04
So how can we perpetuate
196
529000
2000
Donc comment pouvons-nous perpétuer
09:06
this pioneering spirit
197
531000
3000
cet esprit pionnier
09:09
with something that will be independent from fossil energy?
198
534000
4000
09:13
And this is when the project Solar Impulse
199
538000
2000
09:15
really started to
200
540000
3000
a commencé
09:18
turn in my head.
201
543000
2000
à cogiter dans ma tête.
09:20
And I think it's a nice metaphor also
202
545000
2000
09:22
for the 21st century.
203
547000
2000
pour le 21ième siècle.
09:24
Pioneering spirit should continue, but on another level.
204
549000
4000
09:28
Not to conquer the planet or space,
205
553000
3000
09:31
not anymore, it has been done,
206
556000
2000
plus maintenant, cela a été accompli,
09:33
but rather to improve the quality of life.
207
558000
3000
09:36
How can we go through the ice of certainty
208
561000
3000
Comment pouvons-nous traverser cette glace de certitude
09:39
in order to make the most incredible a possible thing?
209
564000
4000
09:43
What is today completely impossible --
210
568000
4000
Ce qui est impossible de nos jours --
09:47
get rid of our dependency on fossil energy.
211
572000
3000
09:50
If you tell to people, we want to be independent
212
575000
2000
09:52
from fossil energy in our world,
213
577000
2000
de l'énergie fossile sur notre planète,
09:54
people will laugh at you, except here,
214
579000
2000
09:56
where crazy people are invited to speak.
215
581000
3000
09:59
(Laughter)
216
584000
2000
(rires)
10:01
So, the idea is that if we fly around the world
217
586000
4000
10:05
in a solar powered airplane,
218
590000
2000
10:07
using absolutely no fuel,
219
592000
2000
sans utiliser de carburant,
10:09
nobody ever could say in the future
220
594000
3000
10:12
that it's impossible to do it
221
597000
2000
que c'est impossible de la faire
10:14
for cars, for heating systems,
222
599000
2000
10:16
for computers, and so on and so on.
223
601000
3000
pour les ordinateurs, et ainsi de suite.
10:19
Well, solar power airplanes are not new.
224
604000
3000
10:22
They have flown in the past, but without
225
607000
2000
10:24
saving capabilities, without batteries.
226
609000
3000
des capacités d'accumulation, sans batteries.
10:27
Which means that they have more proven
227
612000
2000
10:29
the limits of renewable energies
228
614000
2000
les limites des énergies renouvelables
10:31
than the potential of it.
229
616000
2000
que leur potentiel.
10:33
If we want to show the potential,
230
618000
2000
Si nous voulons démontrer leur potentiel,
10:35
we have to fly day and night.
231
620000
3000
nous devons voler jour et nuit.
10:38
That means to load the batteries during the flight,
232
623000
3000
10:41
in order to spend the night on the batteries,
233
626000
3000
10:44
and fly the next day again.
234
629000
2000
et de voler à nouveau le lendemain.
10:46
It has been made, already, on remote controlled
235
631000
4000
Cela a déjà été accompli, contrôlé à distance,
10:50
little airplane models, without pilots.
236
635000
3000
10:53
But it stays an anecdote
237
638000
2000
Mais cela demeure anecdotique
10:55
because the public couldn't identify to it.
238
640000
3000
10:58
I think you need a pilot in the plane
239
643000
2000
11:00
that can talk to the universities,
240
645000
2000
qui peut parler aux universités,
11:02
that can talk to students,
241
647000
2000
qui peut discuter avec les étudiants,
11:04
talk to politicians during the flight,
242
649000
2000
11:06
and really make it a human adventure.
243
651000
2000
et vraiment en faire une aventure humaine.
11:08
For that, unfortunately,
244
653000
2000
Pour ça, malheureusement,
11:10
four meters wingspan is not enough.
245
655000
3000
11:13
You need 64 meter wingspan.
246
658000
3000
Il faut 64 mètres d'envergure.
11:16
64 meter wingspan to carry one pilot, the batteries,
247
661000
4000
11:20
flies slowly enough with the aerodynamic efficiency.
248
665000
4000
voler suffisamment lentement avec l'efficacité aérodynamique.
11:24
Why that? Because fuel is not easy to replace.
249
669000
4000
11:28
That's for sure.
250
673000
2000
C'est certain.
11:30
And with 200 square meters of solar power on our plane,
251
675000
5000
11:35
we can produce the same energy
252
680000
3000
nous pouvons produire l'énergie équivalente
11:38
than 200 little lightbulbs.
253
683000
2000
que 200 petites ampoules.
11:40
That means a Christmas tree, a big Christmas tree.
254
685000
4000
11:44
So the question is, how can you carry a pilot around the world
255
689000
4000
11:48
with an airplane that uses
256
693000
2000
avec un avion qui utilise
11:50
the same amount of energy as a big Christmas tree?
257
695000
3000
11:53
People will tell you it's impossible,
258
698000
2000
Certains vous diront que c'est impossible,
11:55
and that's exactly why we try to do it.
259
700000
3000
11:58
We launched the project with my colleague Andre Borschberg
260
703000
3000
12:01
six years ago.
261
706000
2000
il y a 6 ans.
12:03
We have now 70 people in the team working on it.
262
708000
3000
12:06
We have gone through the stages of simulation, design,
263
711000
4000
12:10
computing, preparing the construction
264
715000
3000
de calculs, de préparation de la construction
12:13
of the first prototype.
265
718000
2000
du premier prototype.
12:15
That has been achieved after two years of work.
266
720000
3000
12:18
Cockpit, propeller, engine.
267
723000
2000
La cabine, l'hélice, le moteur.
12:20
Just the fuselage here, it's so light.
268
725000
2000
12:22
It's not designed by an artist, but it could be.
269
727000
3000
12:25
50 kilos for the entire fuselage.
270
730000
2000
50 kilos pour tout le fuselage
12:27
Couple of kilos more for the wing spars.
271
732000
4000
12:31
This is the complete structure of the airplane.
272
736000
3000
Voici la structure complète de l'avion.
12:34
And one month ago we have unveiled it.
273
739000
3000
Et nous l'avons dévoilé il y a un mois.
12:37
You cannot imagine how it is for a team
274
742000
2000
12:39
who has been working six years on it
275
744000
2000
qui y a travaillé six ans
12:41
to show that it's not only a dream and a vision,
276
746000
3000
12:44
it's a real airplane.
277
749000
2000
mais un véritable avion.
12:46
A real airplane that we could finally present.
278
751000
3000
12:49
And what's the goal now?
279
754000
2000
Et c'est quoi le but maintenant?
12:51
The goal is to take off,
280
756000
4000
Le but c'est de s'envoler,
12:55
end of this year for the first test,
281
760000
2000
12:57
but mainly next year, spring or summer,
282
762000
4000
13:01
take off, on our own power,
283
766000
2000
de s'envoler, sur notre propre énergie,
13:03
without additional help, without being towed,
284
768000
3000
sans aide additionnelle, sans être remorqué,
13:06
climb to 9,000 meters altitude.
285
771000
3000
atteindre 9 000 mètres d'altitude,
13:09
The same time we load the batteries,
286
774000
2000
au même moment, recharger nos batteries,
13:11
we run the engines, and when we get at the maximum height,
287
776000
5000
13:16
we arrive at the beginning of the night.
288
781000
2000
nous arrivons au début de la nuit.
13:18
And there, there will be just one goal, just one:
289
783000
5000
et il n'y aura qu'un seul but, juste un,
13:23
reach the next sunrise before the batteries are empty.
290
788000
3000
13:26
(Laughter)
291
791000
3000
(rires)
13:29
And this is exactly the symbol of our world.
292
794000
3000
13:32
If our airplane is too heavy,
293
797000
2000
si notre avion est trop lourd,
13:34
if the pilot wastes energy,
294
799000
2000
si le pilote gaspille trop d'énergie,
13:36
we'll never make it through the night.
295
801000
2000
13:38
And in our world, if we keep on spoiling,
296
803000
3000
13:41
wasting our energy resources,
297
806000
2000
à gaspiller nos ressources naturelles,
13:43
if we keep on building things that consume so much energy
298
808000
3000
13:46
that most of the companies now go bankrupt,
299
811000
5000
13:51
it's clear that we'll never give the planet to the next generation
300
816000
2000
13:53
without a major problem.
301
818000
2000
sans un problème majeur.
13:55
So, you see that this airplane is more a symbol.
302
820000
3000
13:58
I don't think it will transport 200 people
303
823000
2000
14:00
in the next years.
304
825000
2000
dans les prochaines années.
14:02
But when Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic,
305
827000
2000
Mais quand Lindbergh a traversé l'Atlantique
14:04
the payload was also just sufficient
306
829000
2000
la charge utile était à peine suffisante
14:06
for one person and some fuel.
307
831000
4000
pour une personne et le carburant.
14:10
And 20 years later there were 200 people
308
835000
2000
Et 20 ans plus tard, il avait 200 personnes
14:12
in every airplane crossing the Atlantic.
309
837000
2000
dans chaque avion qui traversait l'Atlantique.
14:14
So, we have to start,
310
839000
2000
Donc, nous devons débuter,
14:16
and show the example.
311
841000
2000
et montrer l'exemple.
14:18
A little bit like on this picture here.
312
843000
2000
14:20
This is a painting from Magritte,
313
845000
2000
C'est une peinture de Magritte,
14:22
in the museum in Holland that I love so much.
314
847000
3000
14:25
It's a pipe, and it's written, "This is not a pipe."
315
850000
3000
C'est une pipe et c'est écrit: " Ceci n'est pas une pipe.".
14:28
This is not an airplane.
316
853000
3000
Ceci n'est pas un avion.
14:31
This is a symbol of what we can achieve
317
856000
3000
14:34
when we believe in the impossible,
318
859000
2000
quand nous avons foi en l'impossible,
14:36
when we have a team,
319
861000
2000
quand vous avez une équipe,
14:38
when we have pioneering spirit,
320
863000
3000
quand vous avez l'esprit de pionnier,
14:41
and especially when we understand
321
866000
2000
et spécialement quand vous comprenez
14:43
that all the certainties we have
322
868000
2000
que toutes les certitudes que nous avons
14:45
should be thrown overboard.
323
870000
3000
doivent être lancées par-dessus bord.
14:48
What pleases me very much
324
873000
2000
Ce qui me plaît le plus
14:50
is that in the beginning I thought that we would have to fly
325
875000
2000
14:52
around the world with no fuel
326
877000
3000
le tour du monde sans carburant
14:55
in order to have our message been understood.
327
880000
3000
afin que notre message soit compris.
14:58
And more and more, we're invited around the world with Andre
328
883000
3000
15:01
to talk about that project, to talk about the symbol of it,
329
886000
3000
15:04
invited by politicians, invited in energy forums,
330
889000
3000
15:07
in order to show that it's not anymore
331
892000
3000
15:10
completely stupid
332
895000
2000
complètement stupide
15:12
to think about getting rid of the dependency
333
897000
2000
de penser se débarrasser de la dépendance
15:14
on fossil energies.
334
899000
2000
aux énergies fossiles.
15:16
So, through speeches like this one today,
335
901000
3000
15:19
through interviews, through meetings,
336
904000
3000
grâce à des entrevues, grâce à des conférences,
15:22
our goal is to get as many people possible on the team.
337
907000
5000
15:27
The success will not come
338
912000
2000
Le succès ne viendra pas
15:29
if we "just," quote, unquote,
339
914000
2000
si nous volons "juste" entre guillemets
15:31
fly around the world in a solar-powered airplane.
340
916000
2000
15:33
No, the success will come
341
918000
3000
Non, le succès viendra
15:36
if enough people are motivated
342
921000
2000
si assez de gens sont motivés
15:38
to do exactly the same in their daily life,
343
923000
3000
15:41
save energy, go to renewables.
344
926000
3000
15:44
And this is possible. You know, with the technologies we have today,
345
929000
3000
15:47
we can save between 30 and 50 percent
346
932000
3000
nous pouvons économiser entre 30 et 50 pourcent
15:50
of the energy of a country in Europe,
347
935000
4000
15:54
and we can solve half of the rest with renewables.
348
939000
3000
15:57
It leaves 25 or 30 percent for
349
942000
3000
Cela nous laisse 25 ou 30 pourcent pour
16:00
oil, gas, coal, nuclear, or whatever.
350
945000
4000
16:04
This is acceptable.
351
949000
2000
Ceci est acceptable.
16:06
This is why all the people who believe
352
951000
4000
16:10
in this type of spirit
353
955000
2000
en cette vue de l''esprit
16:12
are welcome to be on that team.
354
957000
2000
sont la bienvenue dans cette équipe.
16:14
You can just go on SolarImpulse.com, subscribe
355
959000
3000
16:17
to just be informed of what we're doing.
356
962000
2000
16:19
But much more, to get advices,
357
964000
2000
Mais aussi beaucoup plus, recevoir des conseils,
16:21
to give your comments, to spread the word
358
966000
2000
partager vos commentaires, propager l'idée
16:23
that if it's possible in the air,
359
968000
3000
que si c'est possible en l'air
16:26
of course it's possible in the ground.
360
971000
3000
16:29
And each time we have some ice in the future,
361
974000
4000
16:33
we have to know that life will be great,
362
978000
3000
16:36
and the success will be brilliant
363
981000
3000
et que le succès sera brillant
16:39
if we dare to overcome our fear of the ice,
364
984000
3000
16:42
to go through the obstacle,
365
987000
2000
passer à travers l'obstacle
16:44
to go through the problem, in order to see what there is on the other side.
366
989000
4000
16:48
So, you see, this is what we're doing on our side.
367
993000
4000
16:52
Everyone has his goal, has his dreams,
368
997000
3000
Chacun a un but, a des rêves,
16:55
has his visions.
369
1000000
3000
a des visions.
16:58
The question I leave you with now
370
1003000
2000
17:00
is which is the ballast
371
1005000
2000
est quel ballast
17:02
you would like to throw overboard?
372
1007000
4000
allez-vous jeter par-dessus bord?
17:06
Which will be the altitude at which
373
1011000
2000
Quelle sera l'altitude à laquelle
17:08
you would like to fly in your life,
374
1013000
3000
vous voudrez voler durant votre vie,
17:11
to get to the success that you wish to have,
375
1016000
3000
pour atteindre le succès que vous désirez,
17:14
to get to the point that really belongs to you,
376
1019000
4000
pour atteindre un endroit qui vous appartient,
17:18
with the potential you have,
377
1023000
2000
avec le potentiel que vous possédez,
17:20
and the one you can really fulfill?
378
1025000
3000
et celui qui sera satisfaisant?
17:23
Because the most renewable energy we have
379
1028000
3000
17:26
is our own potential, and our own passion.
380
1031000
3000
est notre propre potentiel, and notre propre passion.
17:29
So, let's go for it, and I wish you an excellent adventure
381
1034000
2000
17:31
in the wings of the future. Thank you.
382
1036000
2000
sur les ailes du futur. Merci.
17:33
(Applause)
