ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Maz Jobrani - Comedian
A founding member of the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, Iranian-American comedian Maz Jobrani is now touring with his second solo comedy show, Browner and Friendlier.

Why you should listen

Maz Jobrani is an actor and comedian who starred on the Axis of Evil Middle East Comedy Tour, a groundbreaking tour of the US and Middle Eastern countries, where it sold out 27 shows in Dubai, Beirut, Cairo, Kuwait and Amman. The Axis of Evil Comedy Central Special premiered in 2007 as, arguably, the first show on American TV with an all-Middle Eastern/American cast. In 2009 Jobrani performed in his first solo world tour, called Maz Jobrani: Brown and Friendly, and is currently following up this tour with a second, titled Browner and Friendlier.

Jobrani's comedy pulls from his background as an Iran-born kid raised in Northern California. He pokes fun at cultural stereotypes of all kinds -- starting with the stereotype that Middle Eastern actors can only play a few kinds of roles in Hollywood. He's been working to develop rich characters in a variety of TV shows and films. His next project: Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero, described as a cross between a Middle Eastern Pink Panther and Bend It Like Beckham.

I was one of the founding members
0
0
2000
J'étais l'un des membres fondateurs
00:17
of the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour.
1
2000
2000
00:19
The other founding members included Ahmed Ahmed,
2
4000
3000
Les autres membres fondateurs étaient Ahmed Ahmed,
00:22
who is an Egyptian-American,
3
7000
2000
qui est Egypto-américain,
00:24
who actually had the idea to go to the Middle East and try it out.
4
9000
2000
00:26
Before we went out as a tour,
5
11000
2000
Avant que nous partions en tournée,
00:28
he went out solo and did it first.
6
13000
2000
il est parti en solo et l'a d'abord fait.
00:30
Then there was Aron Kader, who was the Palestinian-American.
7
15000
3000
00:33
And then there was me, the Iranian-American of the group.
8
18000
3000
00:36
Now, being Iranian-American
9
21000
2000
Maintenant, être Irano-américain
00:38
presents its own set of problems, as you know.
10
23000
2000
00:40
Those two countries aren't getting along these days.
11
25000
2000
00:42
So it causes a lot of inner conflict, you know,
12
27000
3000
00:45
like part of me likes me, part of me hates me.
13
30000
3000
00:48
Part of me thinks I should have a nuclear program,
14
33000
2000
00:50
the other part thinks I can't be trusted with one.
15
35000
3000
00:53
These are dilemmas I have every day.
16
38000
3000
00:56
But I was born in Iran; I'm now an American citizen,
17
41000
2000
00:58
which means I have the American passport,
18
43000
2000
01:00
which means I can travel.
19
45000
3000
et que donc je peux voyager.
01:03
Because if you only have the Iranian passport,
20
48000
2000
01:05
you're kind of limited to the countries you can go to
21
50000
2000
01:07
with open arms, you know --
22
52000
2000
les bras ouverts, vous savez --
01:09
Syria, Venezuela, North Korea.
23
54000
2000
01:11
(Laughter)
24
56000
3000
(Rires)
01:14
So anyone who's gotten their passport in America
25
59000
2000
01:16
will tell you, when you get your passport,
26
61000
2000
vous diront, quand vous obtenez le passeport,
01:18
it still says what country you were born in.
27
63000
2000
01:20
So I remember getting my American passport.
28
65000
2000
Et je me rappelle quand j'ai obtenu mon passeport américain.
01:22
I was like, "Woohoo! I'm going to travel."
29
67000
2000
Je me disais, "Youpie! Je vais voyager."
01:24
And I opened it up, it said, "Born in Iran." I'm like, "Oh, come on, man."
30
69000
3000
Et je l'ai ouvert, il y avait écrit, "Né en Iran." Je me suis dit, " Ah, c'est pas vrai."
01:27
(Laughter)
31
72000
2000
(Rires)
01:29
"I'm trying to go places."
32
74000
2000
"J'essaye de voyager."
01:31
But what's interesting is, I've never had trouble
33
76000
2000
01:33
traveling in any other Western countries with my American passport,
34
78000
3000
01:36
even though it says, "Born in Iran." No problems.
35
81000
2000
même s'il mentionnait, "Né en Iran." Aucun problème.
01:38
Where I've had some problems is some of the Arab countries,
36
83000
3000
01:41
because I guess some of the Arab countries aren't getting along with Iran either.
37
86000
3000
01:44
And so I was in Kuwait recently,
38
89000
2000
Et donc j'étais au Koweit récemment,
01:46
doing a comedy show with some other American comedians.
39
91000
2000
01:48
They all went through, and then the border patrol saw my American passport.
40
93000
3000
01:51
"Ah ha! American, great."
41
96000
2000
"Ah ha! Américain, super."
01:53
Then he opened it up. "Born in Iran? Wait."
42
98000
2000
Puis il l'a ouvert. "Né en Iran ? Attendez."
01:55
(Laughter)
43
100000
2000
(Rires)
01:57
And he started asking me questions.
44
102000
2000
01:59
He said, "What is your father's name?"
45
104000
2000
Il a dit, " Quel est le nom de votre père ?"
02:01
I said, "Well, he's passed away, but his name was Khosro."
46
106000
3000
02:04
He goes, "What is your grandfather's name?"
47
109000
2000
02:06
I said, "He passed away a long time ago.
48
111000
2000
J'ai dit, "Il est mort il y a longtemps.
02:08
His name was Jabbar."
49
113000
2000
Il s'appelait Jabbar."
02:10
He says, "You wait. I'll be back," and he walked away.
50
115000
2000
02:12
And I started freaking out,
51
117000
2000
Et j'ai commencé à capoter,
02:14
because I don't know what kind of crap my grandfather was into.
52
119000
2000
02:16
(Laughter)
53
121000
3000
(Rires)
02:19
Thought the guy was going to come back and be like,
54
124000
2000
02:21
"We've been looking for you for 200 years."
55
126000
2000
"ça fait 200 ans qu'on vous recherche."
02:23
(Laughter)
56
128000
4000
(Rires)
02:27
"Your grandfather has a parking violation. It's way overdue.
57
132000
3000
"Votre grand-père a un ticket pour stationnement illégal. Le paiement est en retard.
02:30
You owe us two billion dollars."
58
135000
3000
Vous nous devez 2 milliards de dollars."
02:34
But as you can see, when I talk,
59
139000
2000
02:36
I speak with an American accent, which you would think
60
141000
2000
02:38
as an Iranian-American actor,
61
143000
2000
qu'en tant qu'acteur irano-américain,
02:40
I should be able to play any part, good, bad, what have you.
62
145000
3000
02:43
But a lot of times in Hollywood,
63
148000
2000
Mais souvent à Hollywood,
02:45
when casting directors find out you're of Middle Eastern descent,
64
150000
2000
02:47
they go, "Oh, you're Iranian. Great.
65
152000
2000
il disent, "Oh, vous êtes Iranien, super.
02:49
Can you say 'I will kill you in the name of Allah?'"
66
154000
3000
02:52
"I could say that, but what if I were to say,
67
157000
2000
"Je pourrais le dire, mais si je disais plutôt,
02:54
'Hello. I'm your doctor?'"
68
159000
2000
'Bonjour, je suis votre médecin' ?"
02:56
They go, "Great. And then you hijack the hospital."
69
161000
3000
02:59
(Laughter)
70
164000
5000
(Rires)
03:04
Like I think you're missing the point here.
71
169000
3000
03:07
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind playing bad guys.
72
172000
2000
03:09
I want to play a bad guy. I want to rob a bank.
73
174000
2000
Je veux jouer un méchant. Je veux cambrioler une banque.
03:11
I want to rob a bank in a film. I want to rob a bank in a film,
74
176000
2000
03:13
but do it with a gun, with a gun, not with a bomb strapped around me, right.
75
178000
3000
03:16
(Laughter)
76
181000
2000
(Rires)
03:18
Because I imagine the director: "Maz, I think your character
77
183000
2000
03:20
would rob the bank with a bomb around him."
78
185000
3000
03:23
"Why would I do that?
79
188000
2000
"Pourquoi je ferais cela ?
03:25
If I want the money, why would I kill myself?"
80
190000
3000
Si je veux l'argent, pourquoi me suicider ?"
03:28
(Laughter)
81
193000
2000
(Rires)
03:30
Right.
82
195000
2000
N'est-ce pas ?
03:32
(Applause)
83
197000
3000
(Applaudissements)
03:35
"Gimme all your money, or I'll blow myself up."
84
200000
3000
"Donnez-moi tout votre argent, ou je me fais sauter."
03:38
(Laughter)
85
203000
4000
(Rires)
03:42
"Well, then blow yourself up.
86
207000
2000
"Et bien fais-toi sauter.
03:44
Just do it outside, please."
87
209000
2000
Mais fais-le dehors, s'il te plait."
03:46
(Laughter)
88
211000
4000
(Rires)
03:50
But the fact is, there's good people everywhere.
89
215000
2000
03:52
That's what I try and show in my stand-up. There's good people everywhere.
90
217000
2000
03:54
All it takes in one person to mess it up.
91
219000
2000
03:56
Like a couple months ago in Times Square in New York,
92
221000
3000
03:59
there was this Pakistani Muslim guy who tried to blow up a car bomb.
93
224000
3000
04:02
Now, I happened to be in Times Square that night
94
227000
2000
04:04
doing a comedy show.
95
229000
2000
et je faisais un spectacle.
04:06
And a few months before that, there was a white American guy in Austin, Texas
96
231000
3000
04:09
who flew his airplane into the IRS building,
97
234000
3000
04:12
and I happened to be in Austin that day
98
237000
3000
et il se trouve que j'étais à Austin ce jour-là
04:15
doing a stand-up comedy show.
99
240000
2000
pour faire un spectacle.
04:17
Now I'll tell you, as a Middle Eastern male,
100
242000
2000
04:19
when you show up around a lot of these activities,
101
244000
3000
04:22
you start feeling guilty at one point.
102
247000
2000
04:24
I was watching the news. I'm like, "Am I involved in this crap?"
103
249000
3000
04:27
(Laughter)
104
252000
6000
(Rires)
04:33
"I didn't get the memo. What's going on?"
105
258000
2000
"On ne m'a pas informé. Qu'est-ce qui se passe ?"
04:35
(Laughter)
106
260000
2000
(Rires)
04:37
But what was interesting was, the Pakistani Muslim guy --
107
262000
2000
04:39
see he gives a bad name to Muslims
108
264000
2000
04:41
and Middle Easterners and Pakistanis from all over the world.
109
266000
3000
04:44
And one thing that happened there was also the Pakistani Taliban
110
269000
3000
04:47
took credit for that failed car bombing.
111
272000
3000
ont revendiqué cet attentat manqué.
04:50
My question is: why would you take credit
112
275000
2000
Ma question est : pourquoi revendiquer
04:52
for a failed car bombing?
113
277000
2000
un attentat manqué ?
04:54
"We just wanted to say
114
279000
2000
"On voulait juste dire :
04:56
we tried."
115
281000
2000
on a essayé."
04:58
(Laughter)
116
283000
4000
(Rires)
05:02
"And furthermore,
117
287000
2000
"Et de plus,
05:04
it is the thought that counts."
118
289000
2000
c'est l'intention qui compte."
05:06
(Laughter)
119
291000
2000
(Rires)
05:08
(Applause)
120
293000
7000
(Applaudissements)
05:15
"And in conclusion, win some, lose some."
121
300000
2000
"Et donc, un coup on gagne, un coup on perd."
05:17
(Laughter)
122
302000
2000
(Rires)
05:19
But what happened was, when the white guy flew his plane into the building,
123
304000
3000
05:22
I know all my Middle Eastern and Muslim friends in the States
124
307000
2000
05:24
were watching TV, going, "Please, don't be Middle Eastern.
125
309000
2000
05:26
Don't be Hassan. Don't be Hussein."
126
311000
3000
Ne t'appelle pas Hassan. Ou Hussein."
05:29
And the name came out Jack. I'm like, "Woooo!
127
314000
3000
Et il ont donné le nom de Jack. Et j'ai fait, "Youpie !
05:32
That's not one of us."
128
317000
2000
Ce n'est pas l'un d'entre nous."
05:34
But I kept watching the news in case they came back,
129
319000
2000
05:36
they were like, "Before he did it, he converted to Islam."
130
321000
2000
05:38
"Damn it! Why Jack? Why?"
131
323000
3000
"Bon sang ! Pourquoi Jack ? Pourquoi ?"
05:43
But the fact is, I've been lucky
132
328000
2000
Mais le fait est que j'ai eu de la chance
05:45
to get a chance to perform all over the world,
133
330000
2000
05:47
and I did a lot of shows in the Middle East.
134
332000
2000
05:49
I just did a seven-country solo tour.
135
334000
2000
05:51
I was in Oman, and I was in Saudi Arabia.
136
336000
2000
05:53
I was in Dubai.
137
338000
2000
J'ai été à Dubai.
05:55
And it's great, there's good people everywhere.
138
340000
2000
05:57
And you learn great things about these places.
139
342000
2000
05:59
I encourage people always to go visit these places.
140
344000
2000
06:01
For example, Dubai -- cool place.
141
346000
2000
par exemple, Dubai -- un endroit cool.
06:03
They're obsessed with having the biggest, tallest, longest, as we all know.
142
348000
3000
06:06
They have a mall there, the Dubai Mall.
143
351000
2000
06:08
It is so big, they have taxis in the mall.
144
353000
3000
06:11
I was walking. I heard "Beep, beep."
145
356000
2000
J'étais en train de marcher. J'ai entendu "Bip, bip."
06:13
I'm like, "What are you doing here?"
146
358000
2000
J'ai dit "Qu'est-ce que vous faites ici ?"
06:15
He goes, "I'm going to the Zara store. It's three miles away.
147
360000
2000
06:17
Out of my way. Out of my way. Out of my way."
148
362000
3000
Dégage. Dégage. Dégage."
06:22
And what's crazy -- there's a recession going on, even in Dubai,
149
367000
2000
06:24
but you wouldn't know by the prices.
150
369000
2000
06:26
Like in the Dubai Mall,
151
371000
2000
Par exemple, au Dubai Mall,
06:28
they sell frozen yogurt by the gram.
152
373000
2000
ils vendent le yaourt glacé au gramme.
06:31
It's like a drug deal.
153
376000
2000
C'est comme un deal de drogue.
06:33
I was walking by. The guy goes, "Psst. Habibi, my friend."
154
378000
3000
J'étais en train de marcher. Le type me fait, "Psst. Habibi, mon ami."
06:36
(Laughter)
155
381000
2000
(Rires)
06:38
"You want some frozen yogurt?
156
383000
3000
"Tu veux du yaourt glacé ?
06:41
Come here. Come here. Come here.
157
386000
2000
Viens ici. Viens ici. Viens ici.
06:43
I have one gram, five gram, 10 gram. How many gram do you want?"
158
388000
3000
J'ai un gramme, 5 grammes, 10 grammes. Combien de grammes tu veux ?"
06:46
(Laughter)
159
391000
2000
(Rires)
06:48
I bought five grams. 10 dollars. 10 dollars! I said, "What's in this?"
160
393000
3000
J'en ai acheté 5 grammes. 10 dollars. 10 dollars ! j'ai dit, "Y a quoi là dedans ?"
06:51
He's like, "Good stuff, man. Columbian. Top of the line. Top of the line."
161
396000
3000
Il me fait " C'est de la bonne, mec. Colombienne. La meilleure. La meilleure. "
06:54
The other thing you learn sometimes
162
399000
2000
L'autre chose qu'on apprend parfois
06:56
when you travel to these countries in the Middle East,
163
401000
2000
06:58
sometimes in Latin American countries, South American countries --
164
403000
2000
07:00
a lot of times when they build stuff,
165
405000
2000
souvent quand ils construisent,
07:02
there's no rules and regulations.
166
407000
2000
il n'y a ni règles ni régulations.
07:04
For example, I took my two year-old son to the playground at the Dubai Mall.
167
409000
3000
07:07
And I've taken my two year-old son to playgrounds all over the United States.
168
412000
3000
07:10
And when you put your two year-old on a slide in the United States,
169
415000
3000
07:13
they put something on the slide
170
418000
3000
07:16
to slow the kid down as he comes down the slide.
171
421000
3000
pour ralentir la descente du petit.
07:19
Not in the Middle East.
172
424000
2000
Pas au Moyen-Orient.
07:21
(Laughter)
173
426000
2000
(Rires)
07:23
I put my two year-old on the slide; he went frrmrmm! He took off.
174
428000
3000
07:26
I went down. I go, "Where's my son?"
175
431000
2000
07:28
"On the third floor, sir. On the third floor."
176
433000
2000
"Au troisième étage, Monsieur. Au troisième étage."
07:30
(Laughter)
177
435000
3000
(Rires)
07:33
"You take a taxi. You go to Zara. Make a left."
178
438000
2000
"Vous prenez un taxi. Vous allez à Zara. Prenez à gauche."
07:35
(Laughter)
179
440000
3000
(Rires)
07:38
"Try the yogurt. It's very good. Little expensive."
180
443000
3000
"Essayez le yaourt. Il est très bon. Un peu cher."
07:42
But one of the things I try to do with my stand-up is to break stereotypes.
181
447000
3000
07:45
And I've been guilty of stereotyping as well.
182
450000
2000
07:47
I was in Dubai. And there's a lot of Indians who work in Dubai.
183
452000
3000
07:50
And they don't get paid that well.
184
455000
2000
07:52
And I got it in my head that all the Indians there must be workers.
185
457000
2000
07:54
And I forgot there's obviously successful Indians in Dubai as well.
186
459000
3000
07:57
I was doing a show,
187
462000
2000
Je faisais un spectacle,
07:59
and they said, "We're going to send a driver to pick you up."
188
464000
2000
08:01
So I went down to the lobby, and I saw this Indian guy.
189
466000
2000
08:03
I go, "He's got to be my driver."
190
468000
2000
J'ai pensé, "Ce doit être mon chauffeur."
08:05
Because he was standing there in like a cheap suit, thin mustache, staring at me.
191
470000
3000
08:08
So I went over, "Excuse me, sir, are you my driver?"
192
473000
2000
Alors je me suis avancé vers lui, "Excusez-moi, monsieur, êtes-vous mon chauffeur ?"
08:10
He goes, "No, sir. I own the hotel."
193
475000
2000
Il a dit, "Non, monsieur. Cet hôtel m'appartient."
08:12
(Laughter)
194
477000
5000
(Rires)
08:17
I go, "I'm sorry. Then why were you staring at me?"
195
482000
2000
J'ai dit, "Désolé. Alors, pourquoi me regardiez-vous fixement ?"
08:19
He goes, "I thought you were my driver."
196
484000
2000
08:21
(Applause)
197
486000
11000
(Applaudissements)
08:32
(Laughter)
198
497000
3000
(Rires)
08:35
I'll leave you guys with this: I try, with my stand-up, to break stereotypes,
199
500000
3000
08:38
present Middle Easterners in a positive light -- Muslims in a positive light --
200
503000
2000
08:40
and I hope that in the coming years,
201
505000
3000
08:43
more film and television programs come out of Hollywood
202
508000
2000
08:45
presenting us in a positive light.
203
510000
3000
qui nous présenteront sous un jour positif.
08:48
Who knows, maybe one day we'll even have our own James Bond, right.
204
513000
3000
08:51
"My name is Bond, Jamal Bond."
205
516000
2000
"Mon nom est Bond, Jamal Bond."
08:53
(Laughter)
206
518000
2000
(Rires)
08:55
Til then, I'll keep telling jokes. I hope you keep laughing.
207
520000
2000
08:57
Have a good day. Thank you.
208
522000
2000
Bonne journée. Merci
08:59
(Applause)
