ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Arthur Benjamin - Mathemagician
Using daring displays of algorithmic trickery, lightning calculator and number wizard Arthur Benjamin mesmerizes audiences with mathematical mystery and beauty.

Why you should listen

Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of math at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage in his tuxedo to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding math stunts. It's part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.

Benjamin is the co-author, with Michael Shermer, of Secrets of Mental Math (which shares his secrets for rapid mental calculation), as well as the co-author of the MAA award-winning Proofs That Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof. For a glimpse of his broad approach to math, see the list of research talks on his website, which seesaws between high-level math (such as his "Vandermonde's Determinant and Fibonacci SAWs," presented at MIT in 2004) and engaging math talks for the rest of us ("An Amazing Mathematical Card Trick").

There is something calledappelé the squarecarré of a numbernombre,
37
95000

01:49
whichlequel mostles plus of you know is takingprise a numbernombre
38
97000
2000
01:51
and multiplyingmultiplier it by itselfse.
39
99000
2000
et à le multiplier par lui-même.
01:53

2000
AB : 25.
01:58
let me demonstratedémontrer with this one --
43
106000
2000
laissez-moi démontrer avec celle-ci --
02:00
is by takingprise the numbernombre, suchtel as fivecinq,
44
108000
2000
02:02
hittingfrappe "timesfois" and then "equalséquivaut à,"
45
110000
3000
02:05
and on mostles plus calculatorscalculatrices that will give you the squarecarré.
46
113000
3000
02:08
On some of these ancientancien RPNRPN calculatorscalculatrices,
47
116000
2000
Sur les anciennes calculatrices de type NPI,
02:10
you've got an "x squaredau carré" buttonbouton on it,

02:15
What I'm going to try and do now is to squarecarré, in my headtête,
50
123000
3000
02:18
fourquatre two-digità deux chiffres numbersNombres
51
126000
2000
quatre nombres à deux chiffres
02:20
fasterPlus vite than they can do on theirleur calculatorscalculatrices, even usingen utilisant the shortcutraccourci methodméthode.
52
128000
4000
02:24
What I'll use is the secondseconde rowrangée this time, and I'll get fourquatre of you --
53
132000
2000
02:26
one, two, threeTrois, fourquatre -- to eachchaque yellhurler out a two-digità deux chiffres numbernombre,
54
134000
3000
02:29
and if you would squarecarré the first numbernombre,
55
137000
4000
02:33
and if you would squarecarré the secondseconde, the thirdtroisième and the fourthQuatrième,
56
141000
2000
02:35
I will try and racecourse you to the answerrépondre. OK?
57
143000
3000

13:47
because this is my biggros finishterminer, OK.
330
815000
3000
13:50
So, withoutsans pour autant any more stallingau point mort,
331
818000
3000
Alors, sans aucun autre délai,
13:53
here we go.
332
821000
3000
allons-y.
13:56
I'll startdébut the problemproblème in the middlemilieu, with 57 timesfois 683.
333
824000
2000
13:58
Now, 57 timesfois 68 is 3,400, plusplus 476 is 3876,
334
826000
3000
Donc, 57 fois 68 donne 3400, plus 476 donne 3876,
14:01
that's 38,760 plusplus 171,
335
829000
3000
ça fait 38 760 plus 171,
14:04
38,760 plusplus 171 is 38,931.
336
832000
3000
38 760 plus 171 donne 38 931.
14:07
38,931; doubledouble that to get 77,862.
337
835000
4000
38 931; je double, 77 862.
14:11
77,862 becomesdevient cookiecookie fissionfission,
338
839000
2000
77 862 devient biscuit fission,
14:13
cookiecookie fissionfission is 77,822.
339
841000
4000
biscuit fission est 77 822.
14:17
That seemssemble right, I'll go on. CookieCookie fissionfission, OK.
340
845000
2000
Ça me semble bon, je continue. Biscuit fission, OK.
14:19
NextProchaine, I do 57 squaredau carré, whichlequel is 3,249, so I can say,
341
847000
4000
14:23
threeTrois billionmilliard. Take the 249, addajouter that to cookiecookie, 249,
342
851000
5000
3 milliards. Je prends 249, j'ajoute à biscuit, 249,
14:28
oopsOups, but I see a carryporter comingvenir --
343
856000
2000
14:30
249 --
344
858000
2000
249 --
14:32
addajouter that to cookiecookie, 250 plusplus 77,
345
860000
2000
j'additionne à biscuit, 250 plus 77,
14:34
is 327 millionmillion --
346
862000
4000
donne 327 millions --
14:38
fissionfission, fissionfission, OK, finallyenfin, we do 683 squaredau carré,
347
866000
2000
14:41
that's 700 timesfois 666, plusplus 17 squaredau carré
348
869000
2000
donc 700 fois 666, plus 17 au carré
14:43
is 466,489, revRev up if I need it,
349
871000
3000
donne 466 489, on vérifie si j'en ai besoin,
14:46
revRev up, take the 466,
350
874000
2000
vérifie, on prend le 466,
14:48
addajouter that to fissionfission, to get,
351
876000
2000
on l'ajoute à fission, pour obtenir,
14:50
oh geeGee --
352
878000
2000
ouf --
14:54
328,489.
