ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dennis Hong - Roboticist
Dennis Hong is the founder and director of RoMeLa -- a Virginia Tech robotics lab that has pioneered several breakthroughs in robot design and engineering.

Why you should listen

As director of a groundbreaking robotics lab, Dennis Hong guides his team of students through projects on robot locomotion and mechanism design, creating award-winning humanoid robots like DARwIn (Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence). His team is known as RoMeLa (Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory) and operates at Virginia Tech.

Hong has also pioneered various innovations in soft-body robots, using a “whole-skin locomotion” as inspired by amoebae. Marrying robotics with biochemistry, he has been able to generate new types of motion with these ingenious forms. For his contributions to the field, Hong was selected as a NASA Summer Faculty Fellow in 2005, given the CAREER award by the National Science Foundation in 2007 and in 2009, named as one of Popular Science's Brilliant 10. He is also a gourmet chef and a magician, performing shows for charity and lecturing on the science of magic.

2000

00:57
I'm just going to showदिखाना you how the robotरोबोट worksकाम करता है.
17
42000
2000
00:59
It flipsFlips its bodyतन 180 degreesडिग्री

01:05
So, that's how it walksसैर. But when you look at us
20

01:14
What you're doing is you really swingझूला your legपैर and catchपकड़ the fallगिरना,

01:25
We call that the conceptसंकल्पना of passiveनिष्क्रिय dynamicगतिशील locomotionगतिवान.
28
70000
4000
01:29
What you're doing is, when you standखड़ा up,

So, even thoughहालांकि there is nothing in natureप्रकृति that looksदिखता है like this,
33

01:40
really, we were inspiredप्रेरित by biologyजीवविज्ञान

01:47
What you see over here, this is what we want to do next
37
92000
2000
01:49
We want to foldतह up the legsपैर and shootगोली मार it up for long-rangeलंबी दूरी motionप्रस्ताव.
38
94000
4000
01:53
And it deploysDeploys legsपैर -- it looksदिखता है almostलगभग like "Starस्टार Warsयुद्धों" --
39
98000
3000
01:56
when it landsभूमि, it absorbsअवशोषण the shockझटका and startsशुरू होता है walkingघूमना.
40
101000
3000
01:59
What you see over here, this yellowपीला thing, this is not a deathमौत rayरे. (Laughterहँसी)
41
104000
3000
02:02
This is just to showदिखाना you that if you have camerasकैमरों
42
107000
2000
02:04
or differentविभिन्न typesप्रकार of sensorsसेंसर --
43
109000
2000
02:06
because it is tallलंबा, it's 1.8 metersमीटर की दूरी पर tallलंबा --
44
111000
2000
02:08
you can see over obstaclesबाधाओं like bushesझाड़ियाँ and those kindsप्रकार of things.
45
113000
3000
02:11
So we have two prototypes
46
116000
2000
02:13
The first versionसंस्करण, in the back, that's STriDERSTriDER I.
47
118000
3000
02:16
The one in frontसामने, the smallerछोटे, is STriDERSTriDER IIद्वितीय.
48
121000
2000
02:18
The problemमुसीबत that we had with STriDERSTriDER I is
49
123000
2000
02:20
it was just too heavyभारी in the bodyतन. We had so manyअनेक motorsमोटर्स,
50
125000
3000
02:23
you know, aligningAligning the jointsजोड़ों, and those kindsप्रकार of things.
51
128000
2000
02:25
So, we decidedनिर्णय लिया to synthesizeसंश्लेषण a mechanicalयांत्रिक mechanismतंत्र
52
130000
4000
02:29
so we could get ridछुटकारा of all the motorsमोटर्स, and with a singleएक motorमोटर
53
134000
3000
02:32
we can coordinateसमन्वय all the motionsगति.
54
137000
2000
02:34
It's a mechanicalयांत्रिक solutionउपाय to a problemमुसीबत, insteadबजाय of usingका उपयोग करते हुए mechatronicsमेक्ट्रोनिक्स.
55
139000
3000
02:37
So, with this now the topचोटी bodyतन is lightरोशनी enoughपर्याप्त. So, it's walkingघूमना in our labप्रयोगशाला;
56
142000
3000
02:40
this was the very first successfulसफल stepकदम.
57
145000
3000
02:43
It's still not perfectedसिद्ध -- its coffeeकॉफ़ी fallsफॉल्स down --
58
148000
2000
02:45
so we still have a lot of work to do.
59
150000
3000
02:48
The secondदूसरा robotरोबोट I want to talk about is calledबुलाया IMPASSगतिरोध.
60
153000
3000

61
156000

इसका पूरा नाम Intelligent Mobility Platform with Actuated Spoke System है |
02:55
So, it's a wheel-legव्हील-लेग hybridसंकर robotरोबोट.
62
160000
3000
02:58
So, think of a rimlessrimless wheel
63
163000
2000
03:00
or a spokeबोला wheelपहिया,
64
165000
2000
03:02
but the spokesप्रवक्ता individuallyव्यक्तिगत moveचाल in and out of the hubहब;
65
167000
3000
03:05
so, it's a wheel-legव्हील-लेग hybridसंकर.
66
170000
2000
03:07
We are literallyसचमुच re-inventingपुनः आविष्कार the wheelपहिया here.
67
172000
2000
03:09
Let me demonstrateप्रदर्शन how it worksकाम करता है.
68
174000
3000
03:12
So, in this videoवीडियो we're usingका उपयोग करते हुए an approachपहुंच
69
177000
2000
03:14

03:24
And just by the tactileस्पर्श informationजानकारी,
74
189000
2000
03:26
it successfullyसफलतापूर्वक crossesपार over these typeप्रकार of terrainइलाके.
75
191000
3000
03:29
But, when it encountersमुठभेड़ों a very extremeचरम terrainइलाके,
76
194000
4000
03:33
in this caseमामला, this obstacleबाधा is more than threeतीन timesटाइम्स
77
198000

12:21
So, really, we have fiveपंज secretsरहस्य.
283
726000
2000
12:23
First is: Where do we get inspiration
284
728000
2000
12:25
Where do we get this sparkचिंगारी of imaginationकल्पना?
285
730000
2000
12:27
This is a trueसच storyकहानी, my personalनिजी storyकहानी.
286
732000
3000
12:30
At night when I go to bedबिस्तर, 3 - 4 a.m. in the morningसुबह,
287
735000

12:40
And then I think, "Ahआह this is coolठंडा."
291
745000

12:42
So, right nextआगामी to my bedबिस्तर I keep a notebookनोटबुक,
292

12:44
a journalपत्रिका, with a specialविशेष penकलम that has a lightरोशनी on it, LED lightरोशनी,
293

12:49
So, I see this, scribbleघसीटना everything down, drawखींचना things,

303
771000

13:09
So, I need to decipherसमझने what I wroteलिखा था.
304
774000

13:11
But sometimesकभी कभी I see this ingeniousसरल ideaविचार in there,
305

3000
13:14
and I have this eurekaयूरेका momentपल.

309
785000

13:23
So, when we have these callsकॉल for proposalsप्रस्तावों,
310
788000
2000
13:25
I try to find a matchमैच betweenके बीच my

But just a sparkचिंगारी of imaginationकल्पना is not good enoughपर्याप्त.

3000
13:38
How do we developविकसित करना these kindsप्रकार of ideasविचारों?

we have these fantasticबहुत खुबस brainstormingबुद्धिशीलता sessionsसत्र.
318

13:46
So, we gatherइकट्ठा around, we discussचर्चा कर about problemsसमस्याएँ

But before we startप्रारंभ we setसेट this goldenस्वर्ण ruleनियम.

13:53
