ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Erik Schlangen - Experimental micromechanics pioneer
Erik Schlangen is a civil engineer and pioneer of experimental micromechanics, who focuses on making industrial materials more durable.

Why you should listen

Erik Schlangen is a Civil Engineering professor at Delft University of Technology and the Chair of Experimental Micromechanics. His areas of research include durability mechanics and "self-healing" materials, like the asphalt and concrete he and his team have developed that can be repaired with induction. This special asphalt is made with tiny steel wool fibers, which, when heated with induction, extends the life of the material. Currently Schlangen and his team are testing the asphalt on the A58 road near Vilssingen in the Netherlands, with the hope that it can be used in future roads all over the country.

Erik Schlangen: A "self-healing" asphalt

Erik Schlangen: L'asfalto auto-rigenerante

Filmed:

01:33
that this is a very nicesimpatico roadstrada.
4

che questa strada è molto bella.
01:36
It's madefatto of asphaltasfalto,

2159
È fatta di asfalto,
01:38
and asphaltasfalto is a very nicesimpatico materialMateriale to driveguidare on,
6

3234
01:41
but not always, especiallyparticolarmente not on these daysgiorni as todayoggi,

01:45

01:47
Then you can have a lot of splashspruzzo wateracqua in the asphaltasfalto.
9
91874
2948
Sull'asfalto si possono formare tante pozzanghere.
01:50
And especiallyparticolarmente if you then ridecavalcata with your bicyclebicicletta,
10

Specialmente se poi andate in bicicletta
01:53

11

3945
01:56
AlsoAnche, asphaltasfalto can createcreare a lot of noiserumore.
12
101061
3110
Inoltre, l'asfalto può produrre molto rumore.
02:00
It's a noisyrumoroso materialMateriale,
13
104171
1614
È un materiale rumoroso,
02:01
and if we produceprodurre roadsstrade like in the NetherlandsPaesi Bassi,
14
105785
2444
02:04
very closevicino to citiescittà, then we would like a silentsilenzioso roadstrada.
15
108229
4132
02:08
The solutionsoluzione for that is to make roadsstrade
16
112361
3269
La soluzione è realizzare strade
02:11
out of porousporoso asphaltasfalto.
17
115630
2177
utilizzando asfalto poroso.
02:13
PorousPoroso asphaltasfalto, a materialMateriale that we use now
18

1991
L'asfalto poroso, un materiale ora impiegato
02:15
in mostmaggior parte of the highwaysautostrade in the NetherlandsPaesi Bassi,
19
119798
2959
02:18
it has porespori and wateracqua can just rainpioggia throughattraverso it,
20
122757
3444
02:22
so all the rainwateracqua piovana will flowflusso away to the sideslati,
21
126201
2901
così tutta l'acqua scorre verso i lati della strada
02:25
and you have a roadstrada that's easyfacile to driveguidare on,
22
129102
2089
e questa risulta più facilmente percorribile
02:27
so no splashspruzzo wateracqua anymorepiù.
23
131191
1930
e non si creano pozzanghere.
02:29
AlsoAnche the noiserumore will disappearscomparire in these porespori.
24
133121
3162
02:32
Because it's very hollowCava, all the noiserumore will disappearscomparire,
25
136283
3023
02:35
so it's a very silentsilenzioso roadstrada.
26
139306
2588
rendendo la strada silenziosa.
02:37
It alsoanche has disadvantagessvantaggi, of coursecorso,
27
141894
3545
Ovviamente ci sono anche svantaggi,
02:41
and the disadvantagesvantaggio of this roadstrada is that ravelingsfilacciatura can occursi verificano.
28
145439
4162
02:45
What is ravelingsfilacciatura? You see that in this roadstrada
29
149601
2925
Di che si tratta? Vedete come in questa strada
02:48
that the stonespietre at the surfacesuperficie come off.
30
152526
2621
i ciottoli superficiali tendano a staccarsi.
02:51

Prima un ciottolo, poi molti altri,
02:56
and more and more and more and more,
32

e poi via via sempre di più,
02:58
and then they -- well, I will not do that. (LaughterRisate)
33

(Risate)
03:01

Ma possono danneggiare il parabrezza,
03:04
so you're not happycontento with that.
35

e questo non va bene.
03:06
And finallyfinalmente, this ravelingsfilacciatura can alsoanche leadcondurre to more and more damagedanno.
36
170438
3990
E infine queste fessurazioni possono sfociare in problemi maggiori.
03:10
SometimesA volte you can createcreare potholesmarmitte with that.

Talvolta si possono creare delle buche.

Ah. È pronto.
03:17
PotholesMarmitte, of coursecorso, that can becomediventare a problemproblema,
39
181105
3185
Buche che, ovviamente, possono diventare un problema,
03:20
but we have a solutionsoluzione.
40
184290
1543
ma abbiamo una soluzione.
03:21
Here you see actuallyin realtà how the damagedanno appearsappare in this materialMateriale.
41
185833
3258
Qui vedete come appaiono i danni sul materiale.
03:24
It's a porousporoso asphaltasfalto, like I said, so you have only
42
189091
2000
03:26
a smallpiccolo amountquantità of binderlegante betweenfra the stonespietre.
43
191091
2772

03:33
this binderlegante, this bitumenbitume,
45
197182
2728
questo legante, questo bitume,
03:35
the gluecolla betweenfra the aggregatesaggregati is going to shrinkcontrarsi,
46
199910
2673
03:38
and if it shrinksstrizzacervelli, it getsprende micro-cracksmicro-fessure,
47
202583
1945
e in questo modo si generano micro-fessure
03:40
and it delaminatesdelaminates from the aggregatesaggregati.
48
204528
1722
e si sfalda, staccandosi dagli aggregati.
03:42
Then if you driveguidare over the roadstrada, you take out the aggregatesaggregati --
49
206250
2560
03:44
what we just saw here.
50
208810
2996
come abbiamo appena visto.
03:47
To solverisolvere this problemproblema, we thought of self-healingauto-guarigione materialsmateriale.
51
211806
3814
03:51
If we can make this materialMateriale self-healingauto-guarigione,
52
215620
2661
03:54
then probablyprobabilmente we have a solutionsoluzione.
53
218281
3193
forse abbiamo la soluzione.
03:57
So what we can do is use steelacciaio woollana just to cleanpulito panspadelle,
54
221474
4594
04:01
and the steelacciaio woollana we can cuttagliare in very smallpiccolo piecespezzi,
55
226068
3485
e la tagliamo in tanti pezzettini,
04:05
and these very smallpiccolo piecespezzi we can mixmescolare to the bitumenbitume.
56
229553
3904
04:09
So then you have asphaltasfalto
57
233457
1745
Otterremo dunque un asfalto
04:11
with very smallpiccolo piecespezzi of steelacciaio woollana in it.
58
235202
3067
04:14
Then you need a machinemacchina, like you see here,
59
238269
2791
04:16
that you can use for cookingcucinando -- an inductioninduzione machinemacchina.
60
241060
3139
04:20
InductionInduzione can heatcalore, especiallyparticolarmente steelacciaio; it's very good at that.
61
244199
4049
L'induzione genera calore, e scalda molto bene l'acciaio.
04:24
Then what you do is you heatcalore up the steelacciaio,
62
248248
2682
Dunque riscaldiamo l'acciaio,
04:26
you meltdella fusione the bitumenbitume,
63
250930
1491
facciamo fondere il bitume,
04:28
and the bitumenbitume will flowflusso into these micro-cracksmicro-fessure,
64
252421
2566
e il bitume penetrerà in queste micro-fessure
04:30
and the stonespietre are again fixedfisso to the surfacesuperficie.
65
254987
3207
fissando nuovamente i ciottoli tra di loro.
04:34
TodayOggi I use a microwaveforno a microonde because I cannotnon può take
66
258194
3962
04:38
the biggrande inductioninduzione machinemacchina here onstagesul palco.
67
262156
2237
sul palco la grossa macchina ad induzione.
04:40
So a microwaveforno a microonde is a similarsimile systemsistema.
68
264393
2880
Le microonde funzionano in modo analogo.
04:43
So I put the specimenesemplare in, whichquale I'm now going to take out
69
267273
3645
04:46
to see what happenedè accaduto.
70
270918
3252
e vedremo cosa succede.
04:50
So this is the specimenesemplare comingvenuta out now.
71
274170
2493
Ecco qui il campione.
04:52
So I said we have suchcome an industrialindustriale machinemacchina in the lablaboratorio
72
276663
4393
04:56
to heatcalore up the specimenscampioni.
73
281056
2272
per scaldare i campioni.
04:59
We testedtestato a lot of specimenscampioni there,
74
283328
2090
Abbiamo testato molti campioni,
05:01
and then the governmentgoverno, they actuallyin realtà saw our resultsrisultati,
75
285418
3175
05:04
and they thought, "Well, that's very interestinginteressante. We have to try that."
76
288593
3950
Hanno pensato, "Beh, è molto interessante. Lo dobbiamo provare."
05:08
So they donatedDonato to us a piecepezzo of highwayautostrada,
77
292543
2316
05:10
400 metersmetri of the A58, where we had to make
78
294859
3487
400 metri sulla A58, dove abbiamo dovuto creare
05:14
a testTest tracktraccia to testTest this materialMateriale.
79
298346
2510
05:16
So that's what we did here. You see where we were makingfabbricazione the testTest roadstrada,
80
300856
3532
05:20
and then of coursecorso this roadstrada will last severalparecchi yearsanni
81
304388
4498
e naturalmente questa strada durerà molti anni
05:24
withoutsenza any damagedanno. That's what we know from practicepratica.
82
308886
3288
senza alcun danno. E' ciò che emerge dalla sperimentazione.
05:28
So we tookha preso a lot of samplescampioni from this roadstrada
83
312174
2779
Abbiamo prelevato molti campioni di manto stradale
05:30
and we testedtestato them in the lablaboratorio.
84
314953
2269
e li abbiamo testati in laboratorio.
05:33
So we did aginginvecchiamento on the samplescampioni,
85
317222
2917
Li abbiamo invecchiati,
05:36
did a lot of loadingcaricamento on it, healedguarito them with our inductioninduzione machinemacchina,

e infine li abbiamo testati nuovamente.
05:42
SeveralDiversi timesvolte we can repeatripetere that.
88

05:44
So actuallyin realtà, the conclusionconclusione from this researchricerca is that
