ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Danny Hillis - Computer theorist
Inventor, scientist, author, engineer -- over his broad career, Danny Hillis has turned his ever-searching brain on an array of subjects, with surprising results.

Why you should listen

Danny Hillis is an inventor, scientist, author and engineer. While completing his doctorate at MIT, he pioneered the concept of parallel computers that is now the basis for graphics processors and cloud computing. He holds more than 300 US patents, covering parallel computers, disk arrays, forgery prevention methods, various electronic and mechanical devices, and the pinch-to-zoom display interface. He has recently been working on problems in medicine as well. He is also the designer of a 10,000-year mechanical clock, and he gave a TED Talk in 1994 that is practically prophetic. Throughout his career, Hillis has worked at places like Disney, and now MIT and Applied Invention, always looking for the next fascinating problem.

Danny Hillis: Internet potrebbe andare in crash.

01:30
So I pickedraccolto think.comcom, but then I thought,

01:50
That attitudeatteggiamento of only takingpresa what you need

Quell'atteggiamento di prendere

01:54
was really what everybodytutti had on the networkRete in those daysgiorni,
31

4044
01:58
and in factfatto, it wasn'tnon era just the people on the networkRete,
32

02:06
So the basicdi base ideaidea of I.P., or InternetInternet protocolprotocollo,

02:09

02:19
And so, if you had some extraextra bandwidthla larghezza di banda,
39

02:22
you'dfaresti deliverconsegnare a messagemessaggio for someonequalcuno.

02:27
You'dSi farebbe kindgenere of dependdipendere on people to do that,

Dipendevi dalle persone per farlo,
02:29
and that was the buildingcostruzione blockbloccare.
43
133525
2664
e questa era la cosa basilare.
02:32
It was actuallyin realtà interestinginteressante that suchcome a communistcomunista principleprincipio
44
136189

Era davvero interessante che un principio
così comunista
02:34

02:39
but it obviouslyovviamente workedlavorato really well,
47
143683
3070
ma ovviamente ha funzionato davvero bene,
02:42
and we all saw what happenedè accaduto with the InternetInternet.
48
146753
3443
e tutti abbiamo visto cosa è successo con Internet.
02:46
It was incrediblyincredibilmente successfulriuscito.
49
150196
2272
Ha avuto un successo incredibile.
02:48
In factfatto, it was so successfulriuscito that there's no way
50
152468
3297
In realtà, ha avuto talmente tanto successo
che non c'è modo
02:51
that these daysgiorni you could make a booklibro like this.
51
155765
3588
oggi di creare un libro come questo.
02:55
My roughruvido calculationcalcolo is it would be about 25 milesmiglia thickdenso.
52
159353
6166
Secondo il mio calcolo approssimativo sarebbe
spesso circa 40 chilometri.
03:01
But, of coursecorso, you couldn'tnon poteva do it,
53
165519
1174
Ma di certo non si può fare,
03:02
because we don't know the namesnomi of all the people
54
166693
1790
03:04
with InternetInternet or emaile-mail addressesindirizzi,
55
168483
3074
con Internet o indirizzi email,
03:07
and even if we did know theirloro namesnomi,
56
171557
1532
e anche se li conoscessimo,
03:08
I'm prettybella sure that they would not want theirloro namenome,
57
173089

addressindirizzo and telephonetelefono numbernumero publishedpubblicato to everyonetutti.
58

03:15
So the factfatto is that there's a lot of badcattivo guys on the InternetInternet these daysgiorni,
59
179818
3702
03:19
and so we dealtaffrontato with that by makingfabbricazione

piccole cose che non sono davvero Internet
03:31
but are madefatto out of the samestesso buildingcostruzione blocksblocchi,
64
195923
1971
ma che sono costruite sulle stesse basi,
03:33
but we're still basicallyfondamentalmente buildingcostruzione it out of those
65
197894
2240
ma in sostanza stiamo ancora costruendo usando
03:36
samestesso buildingcostruzione blocksblocchi with those samestesso assumptionsassunzioni of trustfiducia.
66
200134

03:40
And that meanssi intende that it's vulnerablevulnerabile
67
204401
2722
E ciò significa che è vulnerabile
03:43
to certaincerto kindstipi of mistakeserrori that can happenaccadere,

03:47
but even the mistakeserrori can be badcattivo.
70

04:04
They didn't intendavere intenzione to screwvite up AsiaAsia, but they did
76
228835
3094
Non intendevano incasinare l'Asia,
ma lo hanno fatto
04:07
because of the way that the protocolsprotocolli work.
77
231929

04:10

dovreste ricordarlo un paio di anni fa,

82
246353
2362

04:24
Now, you don't really think
83
248715
2273
Ora, non pensate davvero che
04:26
that our airplaneaereo systemsistema dependsdipende on the InternetInternet,
84

04:29

85
254014

04:30
I'll come back to that laterdopo.
86
255020

Ritornerò su questo discorso dopo.
04:32
But the factfatto is that people couldn'tnon poteva take off
87
256636
2250
04:34
because something was going wrongsbagliato on the InternetInternet,

perché qualcosa stava andando storto su Internet,
04:37

04:39

06:48
And the way the InternetInternet workslavori is

06:56
and this one processorprocessore, because of a brokenrotto cardcarta,

So of coursecorso, the fastestpiù veloce way to get a messagemessaggio anywheredovunque

Certo, il modo più veloce per

07:27
The interestinginteressante thing was, thoughanche se,

La cosa interessante era che gli

that the sysadminsamministratori di sistema were ablecapace to fixfissare it,
149

07:36

07:37
I mean, everything off, it's like

07:47
One of the reasonsmotivi is a lot of theirloro telephonestelefoni

that go throughattraverso the InternetInternet right now,
158

che adesso passano attraverso Internet,
07:55
and so in factfatto we're becomingdiventando dependentdipendente on it
159
459693
3282
e ne stiamo diventando dipendenti
07:58
for more and more differentdiverso things,
160
462975
1792
per molte cose diverse,
08:00
like when you take off from LAXLAX,
161
464767

quando state per decollare da Los Angeles,
08:03
you're really not thinkingpensiero you're usingutilizzando the InternetInternet.

per funzioni amministrative,
08:21
and so if you take something like the cellcellula phoneTelefono systemsistema,

they're repeatedripetuto, and so on.
175
503925

08:57
So we'venoi abbiamo builtcostruito this systemsistema

Quindi abbiamo costruito questo sistema

09:17
It's turningsvolta into one of these biggrande emergentemergente systemssistemi

09:31
And so if you hearsentire an expertesperto talkingparlando about the InternetInternet

09:53
So if you see one of these mapsmappe of the InternetInternet,

09:56
it's just somebody'sdi qualcuno guessindovina.

NobodyNessuno really knowsconosce what the InternetInternet is right now

10:05
And the problemproblema with it is,

I think we are settingambientazione ourselvesnoi stessi up for a kindgenere of disasterdisastro

come quello del sistema finanziario,
10:13
where we take a systemsistema that's basicallyfondamentalmente builtcostruito on trustfiducia,

10:26
And so right now, I think it's literallyletteralmente truevero
215
610403

E adesso, credo sia vero
10:29
that we don't know what the consequencesconseguenze

220

e peggio quello dopo, e così via.
10:40
But so what we need is a planPiano B.
221
624665

Quindi abbiamo bisogno di un piano B.
10:43
There is no planPiano B right now.

Adesso non c'è un piano B.
10:44
There's no clearchiaro backupdi riserva systemsistema that we'venoi abbiamo very carefullyaccuratamente kepttenere
223

10:53
So what we need is something that doesn't necessarilynecessariamente

10:56

231
649713

Questo non deve essere un progetto

11:10
It's actuallyin realtà relativelyrelativamente simplesemplice to do, technicallytecnicamente,
232
654327

In realtà è tecnicamente semplice da fare,
11:12
because it can use existingesistente fibersfibre that are in the groundterra,

It's basicallyfondamentalmente a matterimporta of decidingdecidere to do it.
235
662836

È solo questione di decidere di farlo.
11:21
But people won'tnon lo farà decidedecidere to do it

238
670464

11:27
So there's been plentyabbondanza of people,
239

che dovremmo avere questo sistema indipendente,
11:36
but it's very harddifficile to get people focusedfocalizzata on planPiano B
242
