ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Thurman - Buddhist scholar
The first American to be ordained a Tibetan Monk by the Dalai Lama, Robert A.F. Thurman is a scholar, author and tireless proponent of peace.

Why you should listen

Tenzin Robert Thurman became a Tibetan monk at age 24. He's a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies at Columbia University, and co-founder of Tibet House US, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization.

Thurman's focus is on the balance between inner insight and cultural harmony. In interpreting the teachings of Buddha, he argues that happiness can be reliable and satisfying in an enduring way without depriving others.

He has translated many Buddhist Sutras, or teachings, and written many books, recently taking on the topic of Anger for the recent Oxford series on the seven deadly sins. He maintains a podcast on Buddhist topics. And yes, he is Uma's dad.

And you think of your enemiesnemici, and you think of the neutralneutro onesquelli.

E poi pensi ai tuoi nemici, e poi pensi a quelli "neutrali".
09:22
And then you try to say, "Well, the lovedamato onesquelli I love.

09:28
I had fightscombatte with them. SometimesA volte they were unfriendlyscortese.

09:33
So, in a way, I like them so much because they're nicesimpatico to me.
170
561000
4000
Cosi, per dire, mi piacciono così tanto perché mi vogliono bene.

565000

09:41
And then the enemiesnemici I don't like because they're mean to me.

And then the BuddhistsBuddisti, of coursecorso, think that, because we'venoi abbiamo all had infiniteinfinito previousprecedente livesvite,

10:07
And alsoanche, actuallyin realtà, I've been your mothermadre.
179
595000
3000
10:10
I've been femalefemmina, and I've been everyogni singlesingolo one of yours'Yours' mothermadre in a previousprecedente life,
180
598000
3000
10:13
the way the BuddhistsBuddisti reflectriflettere.
181
601000

10:15
So, my mothermadre in this life is really great. But all of you in a way
182
603000
3000
Mia madre in questa vita è davvero grande. Ma tutti in qualche modo
10:18
are partparte of the eternaleterna mothermadre.
183
606000
3000
siete parte della madre eterna.
10:21
You gaveha dato me that expressionespressione; "the eternaleterna mamaMama," you said. That's wonderfulmeraviglioso.
184
609000
4000
10:25
So, that's the way the BuddhistsBuddisti do it.
185
613000
2000
10:27
A theistteista ChristianCristiana can think that all beingsesseri, even my enemiesnemici, are God'sDi Dio childrenbambini.
186
615000
5000
10:32
So, in that sensesenso, we're relatedrelazionato.
187
620000
2000
Quindi in qualche modo siamo imparentati.
10:34
So, they first createcreare this foundationfondazione of equalityuguaglianza.
188
622000
3000
10:37
So, we sortordinare of reduceridurre a little of the clingingaderente to the onesquelli we love --
189
625000
4000
10:41
just in the meditationmeditazione -- and we openAperto our mindmente to those we don't know.
190
629000
4000
10:45
And we definitelydecisamente reduceridurre the hostilityostilità and the "I don't want to be compassionatecompassionevole to them"
191
633000
4000
10:49
to the onesquelli we think of as the badcattivo guys, the onesquelli we hateodiare and we don't like.
192
637000
5000
10:54
And we don't hateodiare anyonechiunque, thereforeperciò. So we equalizepareggiare. That's very importantimportante.
193
642000
3000
E quindi non odiamo più nessuno. Rendiamo tutti uguali. Questo è molto importante.
10:57
And then the nextIl prossimo thing we do is what is calledchiamato "mothermadre recognitionriconoscimento."
194
645000
4000
11:01
And that is, we think of everyogni beingessere as familiarfamiliare, as familyfamiglia.
195
649000
5000
11:06
We expandespandere. We take the feelingsensazione about rememberingricordare a mamaMama,
196
654000
5000
Ci espandiamo.
11:11
and we defusedisinnescare that to all beingsesseri in this meditationmeditazione.
197
659000
4000
11:15
And we see the mothermadre in everyogni beingessere.
198
663000
2000
11:17
We see that look that the mothermadre has on her faceviso,
199
665000
3000
11:20
looking at this childbambino that is a miraclemiracolo

11:29
OftenSpesso the life of that other will be more importantimportante to her than her ownproprio life.
203
677000
4000
11:33
And that's why it's the mostmaggior parte powerfulpotente formmodulo of altruismaltruismo.
204
681000
3000
11:36
The mothermadre is the modelmodello of all altruismaltruismo for humanumano beingsesseri,

And so, we reflectriflettere untilfino a we can sortordinare of see that motherlymaterna expressionespressione in all beingsesseri.
207
691000

Quindi, noi riflettiamo finché riusciamo a vedere quell'espressione materna in tutti gli esseri viventi.

12:26
You can feel the familiarityfamiliarità of all beingsesseri.

13:10
And then the fourthil quarto steppasso, you go to what is calledchiamato "lovelybello love."
232
778000
4000
E poi, quarto step, passi a quello che è chiamato amabile amore.
13:14
In eachogni one of these you can take some weekssettimane, or monthsmesi, or daysgiorni
233
782000
2000
13:16
dependingdipendente on how you do it, or you can do them in a runcorrere, this meditationmeditazione.
234
784000
4000
13:20
And then you think of how lovelybello beingsesseri are when they are happycontento,
235
788000
5000
13:25
when they are satisfiedsoddisfatto.
236
793000
2000
quando sono soddisfatti
13:27
And everyogni beingessere lookssembra beautifulbellissimo when they are internallyinternamente feelingsensazione a happinessfelicità.
237
795000
4000
13:31
TheirLoro faceviso doesn't look like this. When they're angryarrabbiato, they look uglybrutta, everyogni beingessere,
238
799000
4000
13:35
but when they're happycontento they look beautifulbellissimo.
239
803000
2000
ma quando sono felici sono bellissimi.
13:37
And so you see beingsesseri in theirloro potentialpotenziale happinessfelicità.
240
805000
3000
13:40
And you feel a love towardverso them and you want them to be happycontento, even the enemynemico.
241
808000
3000
13:43
We think JesusGesù is beingessere unrealisticirrealistico
242
811000
2000
E, per l'appunto, è molto logico desiderarlo -
13:45
when he saysdice, "Love thinethine enemynemico."
243
813000
4000
13:49
He does say that, and we think he's beingessere unrealisticirrealistico
244
817000
3000
Nel sentirglielo dire pensiamo che sia irrealistico
13:52
and sortordinare of spiritualspirituale and highfalutinhighfalutin. "NiceBello for him to say it, but I can't do that."
245
820000
3000
13:55
But, actuallyin realtà, that's practicalpratico.
246
823000
2000
Ma in realtà è molto pratico.
13:57
If you love your enemynemico that meanssi intende you want your enemynemico to be happycontento.
247
825000
3000
14:00
If your enemynemico was really happycontento, why would they botherperdete tempo to be your enemynemico?
248
828000
4000
14:04
How boringnoioso to runcorrere around chasingcaccia you.
249
832000
2000
Quanto sarebbe noioso stare a rincorrervi.
14:06
They would be relaxingrilassante somewhereda qualche parte havingavendo a good time.
250
834000
3000
14:09
So it makesfa sensesenso to want your enemynemico to be happycontento,
251
837000
2000
14:11
because they'llfaranno stop beingessere your enemynemico because that's too much troubleguaio.
252
839000
3000
14:14
But anywaycomunque, that's the "lovelybello love. "
253
842000
2000
E comunque questo è l'amabile amore.
14:16
And then finallyfinalmente, the fifthquinto steppasso is compassioncompassione, "universaluniversale compassioncompassione."
254
844000
4000
14:20
And that is where you then look at the realityla realtà of all the beingsesseri you can think of.
255
848000
6000
14:26
And you look at them, and you see how they are.
256
854000
2000
14:28
And you realizerendersi conto how unhappyinfelice they are actuallyin realtà, mostlysoprattutto, mostmaggior parte of the time.
257
856000
4000
14:32
You see that furrowedsolcato browsopracciglia in people.
258
860000
2000
Noti quel sopracciglio corrucciato.
14:34
And then you realizerendersi conto they don't even have compassioncompassione on themselvesloro stessi.
259
862000
3000
14:37
They're drivenguidato by this dutydovere and this obligationobbligo.
260
865000
2000
14:39
"I have to get that. I need more. I'm not worthydegno. And I should do something."
261
867000
4000
"Devo fare questo. Ho bisogno di quest'altro. Non valgo abbastanza. Devo fare qualcosa."
14:43
And they're rushingcorrere around all stressedha sottolineato out.
262
871000
2000
E li vedi correre tutti stressati.
14:45
And they think of it as somehowin qualche modo machomacho, harddifficile disciplinedisciplina on themselvesloro stessi.
263
873000
4000
14:49
But actuallyin realtà they are cruelcrudele to themselvesloro stessi.
264
877000
3000
14:52
And, of coursecorso, they are cruelcrudele and ruthlessspietato towardverso othersaltri.
265
880000
2000
14:54
And they, then, never get any positivepositivo feedbackrisposta.
266
882000
2000
E quindi non riceveranno mai feedback positivi.
14:56
And the more they succeedavere successo and the more powerenergia they have,
267
884000
2000
14:58
the more unhappyinfelice they are.
268
886000
2000
e più sono infelici.
15:00
And this is where you feel realvero compassioncompassione for them.
269
888000
3000
15:03
And you then feel you mustdovere actatto.
270
891000
3000
Senti che devi fare qualcosa.
15:06
And the choicescelta of the actionazione, of coursecorso,
271
894000
2000
Ed è una motivazione -
15:08
hopefullyfiduciosamente will be more practicalpratico
272
896000
4000
15:12
than poorpovero AsangaAsanga, who was fixingfissaggio the maggotslarve on the dogcane
273
900000
4000
15:16
because he had that motivationmotivazione, and whoeverchiunque was in frontdavanti of him,
274
904000
3000
perché lui aveva questa motivazione, e chiunque avesse davanti,
15:19
he wanted to help.
275
907000
2000
voleva essere d'aiuto.
15:21
But, of coursecorso, that is impracticalnon pratico. He should have foundedfondato the ASPCAASPCA in the towncittadina
276
909000
4000
15:25
and gottenottenuto some scientificscientifico help for dogscani and maggotslarve.
277
913000
3000
15:28
And I'm sure he did that laterdopo. (LaughterRisate) But that just indicatesindica the statestato of mindmente, you know.
278
916000
6000
15:34
And so the nextIl prossimo steppasso -- the sixthsesto steppasso beyondal di là "universaluniversale compassioncompassione" --
279
922000
4000
15:38
is this thing where you're linkedconnesso with the needsesigenze of othersaltri in a truevero way,
280
926000

15:42
and you have compassioncompassione for yourselfte stesso alsoanche,
281
930000

15:45
and it isn't sentimentalsentimentale only. You mightpotrebbe be in fearpaura of something.

15:59
Of coursecorso in theisticteistica religionreligione they're punishedpunito by God or whateverqualunque cosa.

16:02
And materialismmaterialismo, they think they get out of it just by not existingesistente,
288
950000

16:04

289
952000

con la morte, ma non è così.
16:07
And so they get rebornrinato as whateverqualunque cosa, you know.
290

16:10
Never mindmente. I won'tnon lo farà get into that.
291
958000

Lasciamo perdere. Non mi addentrerò in questo.
16:12
But the nextIl prossimo steppasso is calledchiamato "universaluniversale responsibilityresponsabilità."
292
960000
3000
16:15
And that is very importantimportante -- the CharterCarta of CompassionCompassione

295
969000

quella che è chiamata responsabilità universale.
16:23
In the great teachinginsegnamento of his HolinessSantità the DalaiDalai LamaLama

16:27
that he always teachesinsegna everywhereovunque, he saysdice

298
977000

16:32
But "kindnessgentilezza" meanssi intende "universaluniversale responsibilityresponsabilità."
299
980000
2000
Ma la benignità comporta una responsabilità unviersale.
16:34
And that meanssi intende whateverqualunque cosa happensaccade to other beingsesseri is happeningavvenimento to us:
300
982000
4000
