ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Christien Meindertsma - Artist
Christien Meindertsma uses art (and craft) to expose the hidden processes and connections of our modern life.

Why you should listen

Dutch artist Christien Meindertsma explores raw materials in thoughtful ways, making simple books and products that lay bare complex and once-hidden processes. For her first book, Checked Baggage, she purchased a container filled with a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after 9/11. She meticulously categorized all 3,267 items and photographed them on a white seamless background. Her second book, PIG 05049, documents the astounding array of products that different parts of a pig named 05049 could support -- revealing the lines that link raw materials with producers, products and consumers that have become so invisible in an increasingly globalized world. PIG 05049 was acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art this winter.

With her product designs, Meindertsma plays with ancient, natural materials and processes. In a project for the Nature Conservancy last year, she made the sensuous Idaho rug, knitted from inch-thick felted wool yarn from the fleece of sheep at Lava Lake Ranch in Idaho. Each panel of the massive rug was knitted (on giant wooden needles) from the fleece of one sheep, using a different stitch per animal to display the personalities that make up a flock.

HelloCiao. I would like to startinizio my talk

1000
2000
Buongiorno. Vorrei cominciare il mio intervento
00:18
with actuallyin realtà two questionsle domande, and the first one is:
1
3000
2000
00:20
How manymolti people here actuallyin realtà eatmangiare pigmaiale meatcarne?
2
5000
3000
quante persone qui mangiano carne di maiale?
00:23
Please raiseaumentare your handmano --
3
8000
2000
Alzate la mano, per favore.
00:25
oh, that's a lot.
4
10000
2000
Ah, siete in molti.
00:27
And how manymolti people have actuallyin realtà seenvisto
5
12000
2000
E quante persone hanno visto effettivamente
00:29
a livevivere pigmaiale producingproduzione this meatcarne?
6
14000
2000
un maiale vivo produrre questa carne?
00:31
In the last yearanno?
7
16000
2000
Nell'ultimo anno?
00:34
In the NetherlandsPaesi Bassi -- where I come from --
8
19000
2000
Nei Paesi Bassi, da cui provengo,
00:36
you actuallyin realtà never see a pigmaiale, whichquale is really strangestrano,
9
21000
3000
00:39
because, on a populationpopolazione of 16 millionmilione people,
10
24000
2000
00:41
we have 12 millionmilione pigsmaiali.
11
26000
3000
abbiamo 12 milioni di maiali.
00:44
And well, of coursecorso, the DutchOlandese can't eatmangiare all these pigsmaiali.
12
29000
2000
00:46
They eatmangiare about one-thirdun terzo, and the restriposo is exportedesportati
13
31000
3000
00:49
to all kindstipi of countriespaesi in EuropeEuropa and the restriposo of the worldmondo.
14
34000
3000
00:52
A lot goesva to the U.K., GermanyGermania.
15
37000
2000
Molti vanno in Gran Bretagna e Germania.
00:54
And what I was curiouscurioso about --
16
39000
2000
Quel che mi ha incuriosito -
00:56
because historicallystoricamente, the wholetotale pigmaiale would be used up untilfino a the last bitpo
17
41000
3000
00:59
so nothing would be wastedsprecato --
18
44000
2000
e si usa tutto, fino all'ultimo...
01:01
and I was curiouscurioso to find out
19
46000
2000
ed ero curiosa di scoprire
01:03
if this was actuallyin realtà still the casecaso.
20
48000
2000
se fosse ancora così.
01:05
And I spentspeso about threetre yearsanni researchingricerca.
21
50000
2000
Ho passato tre anni a fare ricerche e
01:07
And I followedseguita this one pigmaiale
22
52000
2000
ho seguito questo maiale,
01:09
with numbernumero "05049,"
23
54000
2000
il maiale numero 05049,
01:11
all the way up untilfino a the endfine
24
56000
2000
dall'inizio alla fine,
01:13
and to what productsprodotti it's madefatto of.
25
58000
2000
fino ai prodotti in cui è finito.
01:15
And in these yearsanni, I metincontrato all kindstipi people
26
60000
2000
In questi anni, ho incontrato vari tipi di persone,
01:17
like, for instanceesempio, farmersagricoltori and butchersmacellai, whichquale seemssembra logicallogico.
27
62000
3000
01:20
But I alsoanche metincontrato aluminumalluminio moldmuffa makersmaker,
28
65000
3000
01:23
ammunitionmunizioni producersproduttori
29
68000
2000
produttori di munizioni,
01:25
and all kindstipi of people.
30
70000
2000
ogni sorta di gente.
01:27
And what was strikingsuggestivo to me
31
72000
2000
Quel che mi ha colpito è che
01:29
is that the farmersagricoltori actuallyin realtà had no cluetraccia
32
74000
2000
gli agricoltori non avevano idea
01:31
what was madefatto of theirloro pigsmaiali,
33
76000
2000
di che fine facessero i loro animali,
01:33
but the consumersconsumatori -- as in us --
34
78000
3000
e neanche i consumatori - cioè noi --
01:36
had alsoanche no ideaidea
35
81000
2000
avevano idea
01:38
of the pigsmaiali beingessere in all these productsprodotti.
36
83000
2000
che i maiali fossero in tutti questi prodotti.
01:40
So what I did is,
37
85000
2000
Quindi cosa ho fatto:
01:42
I tookha preso all this researchricerca
38
87000
2000
ho preso le mie ricerche, e
01:44
and I madefatto it into a -- well, basicallyfondamentalmente it's a productprodotto catalogCatalogare of this one pigmaiale,
39
89000
3000

02:37
Then, so, before breakfastcolazione,
61
142000
2000
Così, ancora prima della colazione,
02:39
you've alreadygià metincontrato the pigmaiale so manymolti timesvolte.
62
144000
2000
02:42
Then, at breakfastcolazione, the pigmaiale that I followedseguita,
63
147000

02:50
(LaughterRisate)
66
155000
2000
(Risate)
02:52
Well, that's what the producerproduttore saysdice: it's "improvingmiglioramento the doughpasta,
67
157000
2000
02:54
of coursecorso."
68
159000
3000
Sapete, ovviamente..
02:57
In low-fatbasso contenuto di grassi butterburro, or actuallyin realtà in manymolti low-fatbasso contenuto di grassi productsprodotti,
69
162000
2000
02:59
when you take the fatGrasso out, you actuallyin realtà take the tastegusto and the texturestruttura out.
70
164000
3000
03:02
So what they do is they put gelatingelatina back in,
71

3000
Quindi, cosa fanno, inseriscono della gelatina
03:05
in orderordine to retainconservare the texturestruttura.
72
170000
3000
per mantenere almeno la struttura.
03:09
Well, when you're off to work, undersotto the roadstrada or undersotto the buildingsedifici that you see,

un tipo di cemento molto leggero
03:16
that's actuallyin realtà got proteinsproteine from bonesossatura insidedentro

che contiene proteine ossee,
03:19
and it's alsoanche fullycompletamente reusableriutilizzabile.

there's this partparte of the brakefreno

there's gelatingelatina to make it look good.

03:38
Fine boneosso chinaCina -- this is a realvero classicclassico.

03:40
Of coursecorso, the boneosso in fine-bonebelle-osso chinaCina
86
205000
2000
Ovviamente, le ossa usate nella ceramica
03:42
gives it its translucencytraslucenza
87
207000
2000
le danno un aspetto traslucido
03:44

88

2000
e le danno forza,
03:46
in orderordine to make these really fine shapesforme,
89
211000

per poter creare forme molto fini,
03:48
like this deercervi.
90
213000
2000
come questo cervo.
03:51
In interiorinterno decoratingdecorazione, the pig'smaiale di actuallyin realtà quiteabbastanza there.
91
216000
3000
03:54
It's used in paintdipingere for the texturestruttura,
92
219000
3000
03:57
but alsoanche for the glossinesslucentezza.
93
222000
2000
ma anche per la sua lucentezza.
03:59
In sandpapercarta vetrata, boneosso gluecolla
94
224000
2000
Nella carta vetrata, la colla ossea
04:01
is actuallyin realtà the gluecolla betweenfra the sandsabbia and the papercarta.
95
226000
3000
tiene unite la sabbia e la carta.
04:05
And then in paintbrushespennelli,
96
230000
2000
Nei pennelli, si usano i peli perché
04:07
hairspeli are used because, apparentlyapparentemente, they're very suitableadatto for makingfabbricazione paintbrushespennelli
97
232000
3000
sono molto adatti ai pennelli da pittura,
04:10
because of theirloro hard-wearingresistente all'usura naturenatura.
98
235000
2000
perché sono durevoli.
04:13
I was not planningpianificazione on showingmostrando you any meatcarne
99
238000
2000
Non volevo mostrarvi carne,
04:15
because, of coursecorso, halfmetà the book'sdi libro meatcarne
100
240000
2000
perché ovviamente, metà del libro è carne, e
04:17
and you probablyprobabilmente all know what meatscarni they are.
101
242000
2000
probabilmente sapete già tutto al riguardo.
04:19
But I didn't want you to missPerdere out on this one,
102
244000
2000
Ma non volevo che vi perdeste questo:
04:21
because this, well, it's calledchiamato "portion-controlledporzione-controllato meatcarne cutstagli."
103
246000
3000
i tagli di carne "porzionati."
04:24
And this is actuallyin realtà soldvenduto
104
249000
2000
Sono venduti nella zona
04:26
in the frozencongelato areala zona of the supermarketsupermercato.
105
251000
2000
dei surgelati, al supermercato.
04:28
And what it is -- it's actuallyin realtà steakbistecca.
106
253000
2000
E in effetti... è una bistecca.
04:30
So, this is soldvenduto as cowmucca,
107
255000
2000
Questa è venduta come bistecca di vacca,
04:32
but what happensaccade when you slaughtermacellazione a cowmucca --
108
257000
2000
04:34
at leastmeno in industrialindustriale factoryfabbrica farmingagricoltura --
109
259000
3000
almeno negli allevamenti industriali -
04:37
they have all these little bitsbit of steakbistecca left
110
262000
2000
04:39
that they can't actuallyin realtà sellvendere as steakbistecca,
111
264000
2000
che non possono vendere come bistecca,
04:41
so what they do is they gluecolla them all togetherinsieme
112
266000
3000
quindi cosa fanno: li incollano tutti insieme
04:44
with fibrinfibrina from pigmaiale bloodsangue
113
269000
2000
con della fibrina [proteina] di sangue porcino,
04:46
into this really largegrande sausagesalsiccia,
114
271000
2000
ne fanno questa salsiccia gigante
04:48
then freezecongelare the sausagesalsiccia, cuttagliare it in little slicesfette
115
273000
3000
che poi congelano e tagliano a fettine,
04:51
and sellvendere those as steakbistecca again.
116
276000
2000
le quali vengono poi vendute come bistecche.
04:54
And this alsoanche actuallyin realtà happensaccade with tunatonno and scallopscapesante.
117
279000
3000
05:00
So, with the steakbistecca, you mightpotrebbe drinkbere a beerbirra.
118
285000
2000
05:02
In the brewingproduzione di birra processprocesso, there's lots of cloudynuvoloso elementselementi in the beerbirra,
119
287000
3000
05:05
so to get ridliberare of these cloudynuvoloso elementselementi,
120
290000
2000
e per liberarsi di questi elementi opacizzanti,
05:07
what some companiesaziende do
121
292000
2000
alcuni produttori
05:09
is they pourversare the beerbirra throughattraverso a sortordinare of gelatingelatina sievesetaccio
122
294000
2000
versano la birra in un setaccio gelatinoso,
05:11
in orderordine to get ridliberare of that cloudinessnuvolosità.
123
296000
3000
per liberarsi dell'opacità.
05:14
This actuallyin realtà alsoanche goesva for winevino as well as fruitfrutta juicesucco.
124
299000
3000
05:19
There's actuallyin realtà a companyazienda in GreeceGrecia
125
304000
2000
C'è un'azienda, in Grecia,
05:21
that producesproduce these cigarettessigarette
126
306000

che produce queste sigarette che contengono
05:23
that actuallyin realtà containcontenere hemoglobinemoglobina from pigsmaiali in the filterfiltro.
127

05:26
And accordingsecondo to them,

Secondo loro,

05:42
And the reasonragionare for this is that pigsmaiali are actuallyin realtà quiteabbastanza closevicino to humanumano beingsesseri,
135
327000
3000
05:45
so the collagencollagene is as well.
136
330000
2000
quindi lo è anche il collagene.
05:49
Well, this mustdovere be the strangestpiù strane thing I foundtrovato.
137
334000
3000
05:52
This is a bulletproiettile comingvenuta from

06:24
I thought that was really weirdstrano,
152
369000
2000

06:33
So, the mostmaggior parte beautifulbellissimo thing I foundtrovato --
155
378000
3000
06:36
at leastmeno what I think is the mostmaggior parte beautifulbellissimo -- in the booklibro, is this heartcuore valvevalvola.
156
381000
3000
06:39
It's actuallyin realtà a very low-techlow-tech
157
384000
2000
E' uno strumento a bassa ed alta tecnologia,
06:41

158
386000
2000
allo stesso tempo, secondo me.
06:43
The low-techlow-tech bitpo is that it's literallyletteralmente a pig'smaiale di heartcuore valvevalvola
159
388000
3000
06:46

160
391000
2000
maiale, montata nella parte supertecnologica, che è

si rimuove il rivestimento esterno e
06:59
and the heartcuore valvevalvola, well, it getsprende this shapeforma
166
404000
2000
la valvola cardiaca prende questa forma,
07:01
and at that momentmomento it startsinizia beatingbattito, instantlyimmediatamente.
167

e inizia a battere subito, immediatamente.
07:04
It's really a sortordinare of magicalmagico momentmomento.
168
409000
2000
E' davvero una sorta di momento magico.
07:07
So this is actuallyin realtà a DutchOlandese companyazienda,
169
412000
2000
E' un'azienda olandese.
07:09
so I calledchiamato them up, and I askedchiesto,
170
414000
2000
Li ho chiamati, e gli ho chiesto
07:11
"Can I borrowprendere in prestito a heartcuore valvevalvola from you?"
171
416000
3000
"Posso prendere in prestito una valvola cardiaca?"
07:14
And the makersmaker of this thing were really enthusiasticentusiasta.
172
419000
2000
I produttori erano molto entusiasti.
07:16
So they were like, "Okay, we'llbene put it in a jarvaso for you with formalinformalina,
173
421000
3000
07:19
and you can borrowprendere in prestito it."
174
424000
2000
e la puoi prendere in prestito."
07:21
Great -- and then I didn't hearsentire from them for weekssettimane,
175
426000
3000
Grandioso. Poi sono spariti per settimane e
07:24
so I calledchiamato,
176
429000
2000
li ho chiamati, e gli ho chiesto,
07:26
and I askedchiesto, "What's going on with the heartcuore valvevalvola?"
177
431000
2000
"Ma la mia valvola...?"
07:28
And they said, "Well the directordirettore of the companyazienda
178
433000
3000
07:31
decideddeciso not to let you borrowprendere in prestito this heartcuore valvevalvola,
179
436000
2000
di non prestarti la valvola perché
07:33
because want his productprodotto
180
438000

non vuole che il prodotto

07:41
Well, the last productprodotto from the booklibro that I'm showingmostrando you is renewablerinnovabile energyenergia --
183
446000
3000
L'ultimo prodotto del libro è relativo all'energia rinnovabile -
07:44
actuallyin realtà, to showmostrare that my first questiondomanda,
184
449000
2000
07:46
if pigsmaiali are still used up untilfino a the last bitpo, was still truevero.
185
451000
3000
07:49
Well it is, because everything that can't be used for anything elsealtro
186
454000
3000
07:52
is madefatto into a fuelcarburante
187

viene riciclato in forma di carburante,
07:54
that can be used as renewablerinnovabile energyenergia sourcefonte.
188

07:58
In totaltotale, I foundtrovato 185 productsprodotti.
189
463000
3000
In totale, ho trovato 185 prodotti.
08:01
And what they showedha mostrato me
190
466000
2000
Quel che mi han mostrato è
08:03
is that, well, firstlyin primo luogo,
191
468000
2000
che, in primo luogo,
08:05
it's at leastmeno to say odddispari
192
470000
2000
è quantomeno strano che
08:07
that we don't treattrattare these pigsmaiali
193
472000
2000
non trattiamo questi maiali
08:09
as absoluteassoluto kingsre and queensregine.
194
474000
3000
come re e regine.
08:12
And the secondsecondo, is that we actuallyin realtà don't have a cluetraccia
195
477000
3000
08:15
of what all these productsprodotti that surroundcircondare us are madefatto of.
196
480000

della provenienza degli oggetti che ci circondano.

Potreste pensare che ami molto i maiali,
08:21
but actuallyin realtà -- well, I am a little bitpo --
