ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Elon Musk - Serial entrepreneur
Elon Musk is the CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and the CEO/CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX).

Why you should listen

At SpaceX, Musk oversees the development of rockets and spacecraft for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to other planets. In 2008, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft won the NASA contract to provide cargo transport to space. In 2012, SpaceX became the first commercial company to dock with the International Space Station and return cargo to Earth with the Dragon.

At Tesla, Musk has overseen product development and design from the beginning, including the all-electric Tesla Roadster, Model S and Model X, and the rollout of Supercharger stations to keep the cars juiced up. (Some of the charging stations use solar energy systems from SolarCity, of which Musk is the non-executive chair.) Transitioning to a sustainable energy economy, in which electric vehicles play a pivotal role, has been one of his central interests for almost two decades. He co-founded PayPal and served as the company's chair and CEO.

01:22
So a coupleカップル of keyキー things
that are important重要
25
70760
2136
01:24
in having持つ a 3D tunnelトンネル networkネットワーク.
26
72920
3896
01:28
First of all, you have to be ableできる
27
76840
1616
01:30
to integrate統合する the entranceエントランス
and exit出口 of the tunnelトンネル
28
78480
2256
01:32

29
80760
2056
01:34
So by having持つ an elevatorエレベーター,
30
82840
3656

01:38
sortソート of a car skateスケート,
that's on an elevatorエレベーター,
31
86520
4776
01:43
you can integrate統合する the entranceエントランス

32
91320
3936

01:50
And then the car gets取得 on a skateスケート.
34
98840
2096
01:52
There's no speed速度 limit限界 here,
35
100960
1376
01:54
so we're designing設計 this to be ableできる
to operate操作する at 200 kilometersキロメートル an hour時間.
36
102360
5016
01:59
CACA: How much?
37
107400
1216
or about 130 milesマイル per〜ごと hour時間.
38
108640
3320
02:04
So you should be ableできる
to get from, say, Westwoodウェストウッド to LAXLAX
39
112800
6216
02:11
in six6 minutes -- five, six6 minutes.

119040
2256
02:13
(Applause
41
121320
4336
02:17
02:19
it's like on a sortソート
43
127280
2296
02:21
EMEM: Yeah.
44
129600
1216
02:22
CACA: Whichどの, I guess推測,
02:24
from the surface表面 streets通り as well.
46
132920
1696
02:26
EMEM: So, I don't know
if people noticed気づいた it in the videoビデオ,
47
134640
2616
02:29
but there's no realリアル limit限界
to how manyたくさんの levelsレベル of tunnelトンネル you can have.
48
137280
5136
02:34
You can go much furtherさらに deep深い
than you can go up.
49
142440
2816
02:37
The deepest最も深い mines鉱山 are much deeperもっと深く
than the tallest最も高い buildings建物 are tall背の高い,
50
145280
4176
02:41
so you can alleviate緩和する any arbitrary任意
02:46
with a 3D tunnelトンネル networkネットワーク.
52
154760
1296
02:48
This is a very important重要 pointポイント.
53
156080
1536
02:49
So a keyキー rebuttal反論 to the tunnelsトンネル
is that if you add追加する one layer of tunnelsトンネル,
54
157640
6376
02:56
that will simply単に alleviate緩和する congestion混雑,
it will get used up,
55
164040
2776
02:58
and then you'llあなたは be back where you started開始した,
back with congestion混雑.
56
166840
3296
03:02
But you can go to any
arbitrary任意 number of tunnelsトンネル,
57
170160
2416
03:04
any number of levelsレベル.
58
172600
1336
03:05
CACA: But people -- seen見た traditionally伝統的に,
it's incredibly信じられないほど expensive高価な to dig掘る,
59
173960
3536
03:09
and that would blockブロック this ideaアイディア.
60
177520
1776
03:11
EMEM: Yeah.
61
179320
1696
03:13
Well, they're right.
62
181040
1216
03:14
To give you an example,
the LALA subway地下鉄 extension拡張,
63
182280
3776
03:18
whichどの is -- I think it's
03:21
that was just completed完成した
for two billion dollarsドル.
65
189760
2239
03:24
So it's roughly大まかに a billion dollarsドル a mileマイル
to do the subway地下鉄 extension拡張 in LALA.
66
192023
5393
03:29
And this is not the highest最高
utilityユーティリティー subway地下鉄 in the world世界.
67
197440
3976
03:33
So yeah, it's quiteかなり difficult難しい
03:37
I think we need to have
at least少なくとも a tenfold10倍 improvement改善
69
205960
3176
03:41
in the costコスト per〜ごと mileマイル of tunnelingトンネリング.
70
209160
2320
03:44
CACA: And how could you achieve達成する that?
71
212160
1680
03:48
EMEM: Actually実際に, if you just do two things,
72
216240
2056
03:50
you can get to approximately
an order注文 of magnitudeマグニチュード improvement改善,
73
218320
3336
03:53
and I think you can go beyond超えて that.
74
221680
2176
03:55
So the first thing to do
is to cutカット the tunnelトンネル diameter直径
75
223880
4256
04:00
by a factor因子 of two or more.
76
228160
1616
04:01
So a singleシングル road道路 laneLANE tunnelトンネル
accordingに従って to regulations規則
77
229800
3976
04:05
has to be 26 feetフィート,
maybe 28 feetフィート in diameter直径
78
233800
2856
04:08
to allow許す for crashesクラッシュ
04:11
and sufficient十分 ventilation換気
for combustion燃焼 engineエンジン cars.
80
239880
4256
04:16
But if you shrinkシュリンク that diameter直径
to what we're attempting試みる,
81
244160
3576
04:19
whichどの is 12 feetフィート, whichどの is plentyたくさん
to get an electric電気の skateスケート throughを通して,
82
247760
3656
04:23
you dropドロップ the diameter直径 by a factor因子 of two
83
251440
3216
04:26
and the cross-sectional断面 areaエリア
by a factor因子 of four4つの,
84
254680
3896
04:30
and the tunnelingトンネリング costコスト scalesスケール
with the cross-sectional断面 areaエリア.
85
258600
2856
04:33
So that's roughly大まかに a half-order半順序
of magnitudeマグニチュード improvement改善 right there.
86
261480
3216
for halfハーフ the time, then they stop,
87
264720
4896
04:41
and then the rest残り of the time
is puttingパッティング in reinforcements増援
88
269640
3176
04:44
for the tunnelトンネル wall.
89
272840
1296
04:46
So if you design設計 the machine機械 instead代わりに
90
274160
2216
04:48
to do continuous連続
04:50
that will give you
a factor因子 of two improvement改善.
92
278760
2216
04:53
Combine結合する that and that's a factor因子 of eight8.
93
281000
2216
04:55
Alsoまた、 these machines機械 are far遠い from beingであること
at their彼らの powerパワー or thermalサーマル limits限界,
94
283240
4656
04:59
so you can jackジャック up the powerパワー
to the machine機械 substantially実質的に.
95
287920
3056
05:03
I think you can get
at least少なくとも a factor因子 of two,
96
291000
2136
05:05
maybe a factor因子 of four4つの or five
improvement改善 on top of that.
97
293160
4176
05:09
So I think there's a fairly
05:13
to get somewhereどこかで in excess過剰
of an order注文 of magnitudeマグニチュード improvement改善
99
301600
2976
05:16
in the costコスト per〜ごと mileマイル,
100
304600
1736
05:18
and our targetターゲット actually実際に is --

And looking at tunnelingトンネリング technology技術,
162

08:30
it turnsターン out that
in order注文 to make a tunnelトンネル,
163
498840

08:33
you have to --
164
501400

In order注文 to sealシール againstに対して the water table,
165
504320

you've got to typically典型的には design設計

166
506720
4656
08:43

172

2416
09:02
CACA: Huh.
173

09:04
EMEM: So, yeah.
174
532160
1536
09:05
CACA: And so you could actually実際に picture画像,

11:38
A lot of people think
that when you make cars autonomous自律的,
226
686040
4296

14:43
CACA: Right. Manyたくさんの other people
are going the LIDARライダール routeルート.
282
871400
2616
14:46
You want camerasカメラ plusプラス radarレーダー is most最も of it.
283
874040
2856
14:48
EMEM: You can absolutely
be superhuman超人 with just camerasカメラ.
284
876920
3376
14:52

CACA: So the new新しい cars beingであること sold売った right now

15:50
CACA: Amazing
15:52
But part of that is possible可能
303
940080
1416
15:53
because you've already既に got a fleet艦隊
of Teslasテスラ driving運転 all these roads道路.
304
941520
3416

15:56
You're accumulating累積する a huge巨大 amount

305
944960

16:03
EMEM: Yes, but the thing
that will be interesting面白い
306
951440
2656
16:06
is that I'm actually実際に fairlyかなり confident自信を持って
it will be ableできる to do that routeルート
307
954120

16:12
even if you change変化する the routeルート dynamically動的に.

16:16
So, it's fairlyかなり easy簡単 --
309
964840

16:20
If you say I'm going to be really good
at one specific特定 routeルート, that's one thing,
310
968040
3736
16:23
but it should be ableできる to go,
really be very good,
311
971800
5136
16:28
certainly確かに once一度 you enter入る a highwayハイウェイ,

976960

So it's not sortソート of limited限られた

We could change変化する it

16:41
that day, in realリアル time.
317
989840
2536
16:44
So you were going from LALA to New新しい Yorkヨーク.
318
992400
2136
16:46
Now go from LALA to Toronto

16:50
CACA: So leaving去る aside脇に

16:53
in terms条項 of the technology技術 alone単独で,

how far遠い away is that, to do that safely安全に?
325
1013640

17:07
EMEM: I think that's about two years.
326
1015600
2256
17:09
So the realリアル trickトリック of it
is not how do you make it work
327
1017880

17:13
say 99.9 percentパーセント of the time,

1021280

because, like, if a car crashesクラッシュ

329
1024240

I would still most最も likelyおそらく

17:54
CACA: To sleep
341
1062400
1216

I guess推測 the big大きい concern懸念 of yoursあなたの

is this is probabilistic確率的.
348
1084600
3400
18:20
I mean, there's some chanceチャンス that any time
a human人間 driverドライバ gets取得 in a car,
349
1088920
3456
18:24

350
1092400

18:27
It's never zero
351
1095360

18:29
So really the keyキー threshold閾値 for autonomy自律性
352
1097440
4376

18:33
is how much better does autonomy自律性

EMEM: So this is a heavyヘビー duty義務,

The thing is to consider検討する

But eventually

25:30
to say 15 years from now,
491
1518120

it will be unusual珍しい to have a roofルーフ
