ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ivan Coyote - Writer, performer
Ivan Coyote believes that a good story can help inspire us to invent a better future.

Why you should listen

Ivan Coyote was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. An award-winning author of eight collections of short stories, one novel, three CD’s, four short films and a renowned performer, Ivan’s first love is live storytelling. Over the last nineteen years, they have become an audience favorite at music, poetry, spoken word and writer’s festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam.

Ivan began performing in 1992, and in 1996 co-founded Taste This, a four person performance troupe that combined live music, storytelling and performance poetry to create a text-driven genre-busting collaborative exchange. Taste This toured North America extensively and in 1998 the four artists published Boys Like Her, a critically acclaimed book that took the stage show to the printed page. Boys Like Her sold out three editions and continues to be considered a notable Canadian contribution to the dialogue around gender identity and sexuality.

Ivan teamed up with Arsenal Pulp Press in 2000, and has since released nine more books. Close to Spiderman (2000), One Man’s Trash (2002), Loose End (2005), Bow Grip (2006), The Slow Fix (2008), Missed Her (2010), Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme (2011), One In Every Crowd (2012) and Gender Failure (2014).

Ivan is still fascinated by the intersection of storytelling and music, and works with a number of well-established Canadian musicians, including pianist and composer Veda Hille, songwriter Dan Mangan, folk artist Rae Spoon, cellist Cris Derksen, and violinist Lyndell Montgomery. Ivan has released three CDs of storytelling with music, You’re A Nation (2003) and You Are Here (2007) and Only Two Reasons (2010).

In 2001 Ivan landed a little gig teaching short fiction at Capilano University in North Vancouver. This little night school class led to an accidental discovery: Ivan loves to teach creative writing. Coyote continued to teach short fiction and classes and workshops, and in 2007 was invited to become Carleton University’s writer-in-residence. While in Ottawa, Coyote taught a third year fiction class, and three memoir-writing classes for senior citizens. It was while teaching seniors that Ivan realized their true calling. Ivan strongly believes in listening to the stories of our elders, and encouraging them to write down their lives.

Coyote has since been honoured to be the writer-in-residence at the Vancouver Public Library (2009), The Carol Shield’s writer-in-residence at the University of Winnipeg (2011) and the writer-in-residence at The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario (2012).

In addition to these literary and teaching accomplishments, Ivan continues to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe, telling stories not only to festival audiences but to high school students, social justice activists, adult literacy students and senior citizens all across the continent. Ivan believes in the transformative power of storytelling, and that collecting and remembering oral history not only preserves a vital part of our families and where we come from, but that a good story can help inspire us to invent a better future.

Ivan Coyote: Why we need gender-neutral bathrooms

Public bathrooms.

01:49
They've been a problem for me

predominantly estrogen-based organism.
31
105440
5696
02:03
(Laughter)
32
111160
1056
02:04
Now, today as a trans person,
public bathrooms and change rooms
33
112240
4896
02:09
are where I am most likely
to be questioned or harassed.
34
117160
4360
02:14
I've often been verbally
attacked behind their doors.
35
122080
3496
02:17
I've been hauled out by security guards
with my pants still halfway pulled up.
36
125600
4736
02:22
I've been stared at,
screamed at, whispered about,
37
130360
2376
02:24
and one time I got smacked in the face
by a little old lady's purse
38
132760
4736
02:29
that from the looks of the shiner
I took home that day
39
137520
2576
02:32
I am pretty certain contained at least
70 dollars of rolled up small change
40
140120
3776
02:35
and a large hard candy collection.
41
143920
1976
02:37
(Laughter)
42
145920
1640
02:40
And I know what some of you are thinking,
43
148800
2160
02:44
and you're mostly right.
44
152800
1520
02:47
I can and do just use the men's room
most of the time these days.
45
155600
5040
02:54
But that doesn't solve
my change room dilemmas, does it?
46
162840
4000
02:59
And I shouldn't have to use the men's room
because I'm not a man.
47
167520
5320
03:05
I'm a trans person.
48
173960
1440
03:08
And now we've got
these fearmongering politicians
49
176200
3856
03:12
that keep trying to pass
these bathroom bills.
50
180080
2176
03:14
Have you heard about these?
51
182280
1336
03:15
They try to legislate
to try and force people like myself
52
183640
2776
03:18
to use the bathroom
that they deem most appropriate
53
186440
4696
03:23
according to the gender
I was assigned at birth.
54
191160
2536
03:25
And if these politicians
ever get their way,
55
193720
3496
03:29
in Arizona or California or Florida
56
197240
3496
03:32
or just last week in Houston, Texas,
57
200760
2376
03:35
or Ottawa,
58
203160
1200
03:36
well then, using the men's room
will not be a legal option for me either.
59
204880
5800
03:43
And every time one of these politicians
brings one of these bills to the table,
60
211880
3715
03:47
I can't help but wonder, you know,
61
215619
2037
03:49
just who will and exactly how would we
go about enforcing laws like these. Right?
62
217680
6536
03:56
Panty checks?
63
224240
1656
03:57
Really.
64
225920
1656
03:59
Genital inspections outside
of bath change rooms at public pools?
65
227600
5920
04:06
There's no legal
or ethical or plausible way
66
234200
3976
04:10
to enforce laws like these anyway.
67
238200
3720
04:14
They exist only to foster fear
68
242600
2536
04:17
and promote transphobia.
69
245160
2280
04:21
They don't make anyone safer.
70
249320
2040
04:24
But they do for sure make the world
more dangerous for some of us.
71
252400
3520
04:28
And meanwhile, our trans children suffer.
72
256480
3376
04:31
They drop out of school,
or they opt out of life altogether.
73
259880
4536
04:36
Trans people, especially trans
and gender-nonconforming youth
74
264440
4936
04:41
face additional challenges
when accessing pools and gyms,
75
269400
4456
04:45
but also universities,
76
273880
2696
04:48
hospitals, libraries.
77
276600
2760
04:52
Don't even get me started
on how they treat us in airports.
78
280160
4080
04:57
If we don't move now
79
285920
1760
05:00
to make sure that these places
80
288800
2616
05:03
are truly open and accessible to everyone,
81
291440
3056
05:06
then we just need to get honest
82
294520
2280
05:09
and quit calling them public places.
83
297640
2520
05:13
We need to just admit
84
301800
1720
05:16
that they are really only open for people
85
304680
2816
05:19
who fit neatly
into one of two gender boxes,
86
307520
4120
05:25
which I do not.
87
313600
1200
05:28
I never have.
88
316720
1280
05:32
And this starts very early.
89
320240
2040
05:35
I know a little girl.
She's the daughter of a friend of mine.
90
323400
3160
05:39
She's a self-identified tomboy.
91
327440
3376
05:42
I'm talking about cowboy boots
92
330840
2096
05:44
and Caterpillar yellow toy trucks
and bug jars, the whole nine yards.
93
332960
4776
05:49
One time I asked her
what her favorite color was.
94
337760
2456
05:52
She told me, "Camouflage."

340240

05:54
(Laughter)
96
342560
2360
05:57
So that awesome little kid,
97
345680
2136
05:59
she came home from school last October
98
347840
2816
06:02
from her half day of preschool
99
350680
2256
06:04
with soggy pants on because the other kids
at school were harassing her
100
352960
4056
06:09
when she tried to use the girls' bathroom.
101
357040
2400
06:12
And the teacher had already instructed her
to stay out of the boys' bathroom.
102
360000
5296
06:17
And she had drank two glasses
of that red juice
103
365320
3536
06:20
at the Halloween party,
104
368880
1456
06:22
and I mean, who can resist
that red juice, right? It's so good.
105
370360
4440
06:27
And she couldn't hold her pee any longer.
106
375680
2320
06:31
Her and her classmates
were four years old.
107
379400
2600
06:34
They already felt empowered enough
108
382640
3056
06:37
to police her use
of the so-called public bathrooms.
109
385720
6200
06:44
She was four years old.
110
392440
1296
06:45
She had already been taught
the brutal lesson
111
393760
3096
06:48
that there was
no bathroom door at preschool
112
396880
4336
06:53
with a sign on it
that welcomed people like her.
113
401240
4200
06:58
She'd already learned that bathrooms
were going to be a problem,
114
406400
3240
07:02
and that problem started with her
115
410760
2880
07:06
and was hers alone.
116
414560
1480
07:10
So my friend asked me
to talk to her little daughter,
117
418840
2880
07:14
and I did.
118
422520
1240
07:16
I wanted to tell her
119
424560
1640
07:19
that me and her mom
were going to march on down
120
427080
2186
07:21
and talk to that school,
and the problem was going to go away,
121
429290
2926
07:24
but I knew that wasn't true.
122
432240
1376
07:25
I wanted to tell her that it was all
going to get better when she got older,
123
433640
3816
07:29
but I couldn't.
124
437480
1200
07:32
So I asked her to tell me
the story of what had happened,
125
440240
3680
07:37
asked her to tell me how it made her feel.
126
445600
2760
07:41
"Mad and sad,"
127
449400
2520
07:44
she told me.
128
452760
1200
07:46
So I told her
129
454880
1240
07:48
that she wasn't alone
130
456760
1480
07:51
and that it wasn't right
what had happened to her,
131
459000
2376
07:53
and then she asked me
if I had ever peed in my pants before.
132
461400
5616
07:59
I said yes, I had,
133
467040
2000
08:01
but not for a really long time.
134
469760
1656
08:03
(Laughter)
135
471440
1216
08:04
Which of course was a lie,
136
472680
2336
08:07
because you know
how you hit, like, 42 or 43,
137
475040
2736
08:09
and sometimes you just,
I don't know, you pee a little bit
138
477800
2976
08:12
when you cough or sneeze,
139
480800
1256
08:14
when you're running upstairs,
or you're stretching.
140
482080
3176
08:17
Don't lie.
141
485280
1536
08:18
It happens. Right?
142
486840
1736
არა?
08:20
She doesn't need to know that, I figure.
143
488600
2176
08:22
(Laughter)
144
490800
2896
08:25
I told her, when you get older,
your bladder is going to grow bigger, too.
145
493720
4560
08:31
When you get old like me,
146
499160
1256
08:32
you're going to be able
to hold your pee for way longer,
147
500440
3936
08:36
I promised her.
148
504400
1200
08:39
"Until you can get home?"
149
507160
1640
08:42
she asked me.
150
510200
1200
08:44
I said, "Yes,
151
512720
1240
08:48
until you can get home."
152
516240
1439
08:52
She seemed to take some comfort in that.
153
520280
4560
08:58
So let's just build some single stall,
gender-neutral bathrooms
154
526800
5776
09:04
with a little bench for getting changed
into your gym clothes.
155
532600
3680
09:08
We can't change the world overnight
156
536880
2560
09:12
for our children,
157
540400
1216
09:13
but we can give them
a safe and private place
158
541640
2456
09:16
to escape that world,
159
544120
1456
09:17
if only for just a minute.
160
545600
3200
09:22
This we can do.
161
550200
1440
09:25
So let's just do it.
162
553280
1520
09:27
And if you are one of those people
who is sitting out there right now
163
555840
3296
09:31
already coming up with a list of reasons
in your head why this is not a priority,
164
559160
4016
09:35
or it's too expensive,
165
563200
2136
09:37
or telling yourself that giving
a trans person a safe place to pee
166
565360
3616
09:41
or get changed in
167
569000
1656
09:42
supports a lifestyle choice
that you feel offends your morality,
168
570680
5896
09:48
or your masculinity,
169
576600
1600
09:50
or your religious beliefs,
170
578800
1456
09:52
then let me just appeal
171
580280
2256
09:54
to the part of your heart
that probably, hopefully,
172
582560
4416
09:59
does care about
the rest of the population.
173
587000
2680
10:03
If you can't bring yourself
to care enough about people like me,
174
591760
5040
10:09
then what about women and girls
175
597920
2296
10:12
with body image issues?
176
600240
2536
10:14
What about anyone
with body image stuff going on?
177
602800
3600
10:19
What about that boy at school
who is a foot shorter than his classmates,
178
607360
5616
10:25
whose voice still hasn't dropped yet? Hey?
179
613000
3856
10:28
Oh, grade eight,
180
616880
1936
10:30
what a cruel master you can be.
181
618840
3176
10:34
Right?
182
622040
1200
არა?
10:35
What about people with anxiety issues?
183
623800
3200
10:39
What about people with disabilities
or who need assistance in there?
184
627960
3576
10:43
What about folks with bodies
who, for whatever reason,
185
631560
3496
10:47
don't fit into the mainstream idea
of what a body should look like?
186
635080
4416
10:51
How many of us still feel shy
187
639520
3096
10:54
or afraid to disrobe
in front of our peers,
188
642640
3536
10:58
and how many of us allow that fear
189
646200
2576
11:00
to keep us from something as important
190
648800
3256
11:04
as physical exercise?
191
652080
3120
11:09
Would all those people not benefit
192
657200
2440
11:12
from these single stall facilities?
193
660720
2960

We can't change
