ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Simon Berrow - Marine biologist
Simon Berrow is a marine biologist dedicated to studying and preserving the basking shark.

Why you should listen

Born in Ireland, Simon Berrow has travelled the world's oceans studying albatrosses, seals, penguins, sharks, and more. A passionate scientist and lover of Ireland's natural heritage, he founded the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Irish Basking Shark Study Group.

He is also the inventor of "Simon's shark slime sampling system" -- a mop handle and oven cleaner -- which has proved to be the most effective way of collecting shark DNA for analysis.

The TEDxTalk was filmed at the Science Gallery in Dublin.

Simon Berrow: How do you save a shark you know nothing about?

Filmed:

is just how low낮은 the genetic유전적인 diversity상이 of sharks상어 are.
183

I've been working on whales고래 and dolphins돌고래 in Ireland아일랜드 for 20 years연령 now,

and they're kind종류 of a bit비트 more dramatic극적인.
362

14:45
You probably아마 saw the humpback곱사등 whale고래 footage피트 길이

And you always think you might have some legacy유산 you can leave휴가 the world세계 behind뒤에.
365

So this is possibly혹시 going to be my legacy유산 --

15:04
So we got more money this year
372

15:06
to carry나르다 on collecting수집 more and more samples견본.

15:09
And one thing that is kind종류 of very useful유능한
374
894000
2000

is that we use a pole cameras카메라 -- this is my colleague동료 Joanne조앤 with a pole camera카메라 --

15:14
where you can actually사실은 look underneath아래에 the shark상어.
376

15:16
And what you're trying견딜 수 없는 to look at is the males수컷 have claspersClaspers,
377
901000
3000

15:22
So you can quite아주 easily용이하게 tell the gender성별 of the shark상어.
379
907000
2000
15:24
So if we can tell the gender성별 of the shark상어
380
909000
2000
15:26
before we sample견본 it,
381
911000
2000
15:28
we can tell the geneticist유전 학자 this was taken취한 from a male남성 or a female여자.
382
913000
3000
15:31
Because at the moment순간, they actually사실은 have no way genetically유 전적으로
383
916000

15:33
of telling말함 the difference between중에서 a male남성 and a female여자,
384
918000

15:35
which어느 I found녹이다 absolutely전혀 staggering비틀 거리는,
385
920000
2000
15:37
because they don't know what primers프라이머 to look for.
386
922000
3000
15:40
And being존재 able할 수 있는 to tell the gender성별 of a shark상어
387
925000
2000
15:42
has got very important중대한
388
927000
2000
15:44
for things like policing치안 the trade무역
389
929000
3000
15:47
in baskingbasking shark상어 and other species through...을 통하여 societies사회,
390

because it is illegal불법 to trade무역 any sharks상어.
391
936000

15:53
And they are caught잡힌 and they are on the market시장.
392
938000
2000
15:55
So as a field biologist
393
940000
2000
15:57
you just want to get encounters만남 with these animals동물.
394
942000

15:59
You want to learn배우다 as much as you can.
395
944000

16:01
They're often자주 quite아주 brief간결한. They're often자주 very seasonally계절적으로 constrained제한된.
396
946000
3000
16:04
And you just want to learn배우다 as much as you can as soon as you can.
397
949000
3000
16:07
But isn't it fantastic
398
952000
2000
16:09
that you can then offer제공 these samples견본
399
954000
3000
16:12
and opportunities기회 to other disciplines분야, such이러한 as geneticists유전 학자,

401

3000
16:18
So as I said,
402
963000

these things are sent보낸 to you in strange이상한 ways. Grab그랩 them while you can.

16:23
I'll take that as my scientific과학적 legacy유산.

16:28
But for the time being존재, thank you for that.
406
973000
3000
16:31
And keep an eye out for sharks
