ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Thurman - Buddhist scholar
The first American to be ordained a Tibetan Monk by the Dalai Lama, Robert A.F. Thurman is a scholar, author and tireless proponent of peace.

Why you should listen

Tenzin Robert Thurman became a Tibetan monk at age 24. He's a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies at Columbia University, and co-founder of Tibet House US, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization.

Thurman's focus is on the balance between inner insight and cultural harmony. In interpreting the teachings of Buddha, he argues that happiness can be reliable and satisfying in an enduring way without depriving others.

He has translated many Buddhist Sutras, or teachings, and written many books, recently taking on the topic of Anger for the recent Oxford series on the seven deadly sins. He maintains a podcast on Buddhist topics. And yes, he is Uma's dad.

06:15
So he thought, "I will take the maggots구더기 and put them on this piece조각 of flesh육체,
111

06:24
So he starts시작하다 to do that. He can't grab그랩 the maggots구더기.
114
372000
2000

06:30
So he says말한다, "Well, I'll put my tongue on the dog's flesh육체.

06:41
So he goes간다 down, and he's sticking고집하는 his tongue out like this.

09:00
And it begins시작하다 first by one meditating명상하는 and visualizing시각화하는 that all beings존재들 are with one --

09:07
even animals동물 too, but everyone각자 모두 is in human인간의 form형태.
162
535000

09:11
The animals동물 are in one of their그들의 human인간의 lives. The humans인간 are human인간의.
163
539000
3000
09:14
And then, among사이에 them, you think of your friends친구 and loved사랑하는 ones그들, the circle at the table.

09:22
And then you try to say, "Well, the loved사랑하는 ones그들 I love.

09:26
But, you know, after all, they're nice좋은 to me.
167
554000
2000
09:28
I had fights싸움 with them. Sometimes때때로 they were unfriendly해로운.

169
558000

09:33
So, in a way, I like them so much because they're nice좋은 to me.
170
561000

And then the Buddhists불교도, of course코스, think that, because we've우리는 all had infinite무한의 previous너무 이른 lives,

10:07
And also또한, actually사실은, I've been your mother어머니.
179

3000
10:10
I've been female여자, and I've been every...마다 single단일 one of yours'당신 것' mother어머니 in a previous너무 이른 life,

10:13
the way the Buddhists불교도 reflect비추다.
181
601000
2000
10:15
So, my mother어머니 in this life is really great. But all of you in a way
182
603000
3000
10:18
are part부품 of the eternal영원한 mother어머니.
183
606000
3000
10:21
You gave me that expression표현; "the eternal영원한 mama엄마," you said. That's wonderful훌륭한.
184
609000
4000
10:25
So, that's the way the Buddhists불교도 do it.
185
613000
2000
10:27
A theist유신론자 Christian신자 can think that all beings존재들, even my enemies적들, are God's하나님의 children어린이.
186
615000
5000
10:32
So, in that sense감각, we're related관련.
187
620000
2000
10:34
So, they first create몹시 떠들어 대다 this foundation기초 of equality평등.
188
622000
3000
10:37
So, we sort종류 of reduce줄이다 a little of the clinging달라 붙는 to the ones그들 we love --
189

4000

190
629000
4000

10:45
And we definitely명확히 reduce줄이다 the hostility적의 and the "I don't want to be compassionate인정 많은 to them"
191
633000
4000

10:54
And we don't hate미움 anyone누군가, therefore따라서. So we equalize같게 하다. That's very important중대한.
193
642000
3000
10:57
And then the next다음 것 thing we do is what is called전화 한 "mother어머니 recognition인식."
194
645000
4000
11:01
And that is, we think of every...마다 being존재 as familiar익숙한, as family가족.
195
649000
5000
11:06
We expand넓히다. We take the feeling감각 about remembering기억하는 a mama엄마,
196
654000

11:15
And we see the mother어머니 in every...마다 being존재.
198
663000
2000
11:17
We see that look that the mother어머니 has on her face얼굴,

Often자주 the life of that other will be more important중대한 to her than her own개인적인 life.
203
677000

11:33
And that's why it's the most가장 powerful강한 form형태 of altruism애타 주의.
204
