ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stephen Wolfram - Scientist, inventor
Stephen Wolfram is the creator of Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha, the author of A New Kind of Science, and the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research.

Why you should listen

Stephen Wolfram published his first scientific paper at the age of 15, and received his PhD in theoretical physics from Caltech by the age of 20. Having started to use computers in 1973, Wolfram rapidly became a leader in the emerging field of scientific computing.

In 1981 Wolfram became the youngest recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship. He then set out on an ambitious new direction in science aimed at understanding the origins of complexity in nature. Wolfram's first key idea was to use computer experiments to study the behavior of simple computer programs known as cellular automata. This allowed him to make a series of startling discoveries about the origins of complexity.

Wolfram founded the first research center and the first journal in the field, Complex Systems, and began the development of Mathematica. Wolfram Research soon became a world leader in the software industry -- widely recognized for excellence in both technology and business.

Following the release of Mathematica Version 2 in 1991, Wolfram began to divide his time between Mathematica development and scientific research. Building on his work from the mid-1980s, and now with Mathematica as a tool, Wolfram made a rapid succession of major new discoveries, which he described in his book, A New Kind of Science.

Building on Mathematica, A New Kind of Science, and the success of Wolfram Research, Wolfram recently launched Wolfram|Alpha -- an ambitious, long-term project to make as much of the world's knowledge as possible computable, and accessible to everyone.

So I want to talk today오늘 about an idea생각. It's a big idea생각.

00:19
Actually사실은, I think it'll그것은 eventually결국

2000
00:21
be seen as probably아마 the single단일 biggest가장 큰 idea생각
2

2000
00:23
that's emerged출현 한 in the past과거 century세기.
3
8000
2000
00:25
It's the idea생각 of computation계산.
4
10000
2000
00:27
Now, of course코스, that idea생각 has brought가져온 us
5
12000
2000
00:29
all of the computer컴퓨터 technology과학 기술 we have today오늘 and so on.
6
14000
3000
00:32
But there's actually사실은 a lot more to computation계산 than that.
7
17000
3000
00:35
It's really a very deep깊은, very powerful강한, very fundamental기본적인 idea생각,
8
20000
3000
00:38
whose누구의 effects효과 we've우리는 only just begun시작된 to see.
9
23000
3000
00:41
Well, I myself자기 have spent지출하다 the past과거 30 years연령 of my life

3000

00:46
that really try to take the idea생각 of computation계산 seriously진지하게.
12
31000
3000
00:50
So I started시작한 off at a young어린 age나이 as a physicist물리학 자

00:55
Then, I started시작한 drilling교련 down,
15

00:57
thinking생각 about the computations계산 I might want to do,

01:05
Eventually결국, I created만들어진 a whole완전한 structure구조

20
52000
2000
01:09
that let me build짓다 Mathematica매쓰 매 티카.
21
54000
2000
01:11
And for the past과거 23 years연령, at an increasing증가하는 rate,
22

01:17
and I'm happy행복 to say that that's led to many많은 good things
25
62000
3000
01:20
in R & D and education교육,
26
65000

01:22
lots of other areas지역.
27
67000
2000
01:24
Well, I have to admit들이다, actually사실은,
28
69000
2000
01:26
that I also또한 had a very selfish이기적인 reason이유 for building건물 Mathematica매쓰 매 티카:
29
71000
3000
01:29
I wanted to use it myself자기,
30
74000
2000
01:31
a bit비트 like Galileo갈릴레오 got to use his telescope망원경
31
76000
2000
01:33
400 years연령 ago...전에.
32
78000
2000
01:35
But I wanted to look not at the astronomical천문학의 universe우주,
33
80000
3000
01:38
but at the computational전산의 universe우주.
34
83000
3000
01:41
So we normally정상적으로 think of programs프로그램들 as being존재
35
86000
2000
01:43
complicated복잡한 things that we build짓다
36
88000
2000
01:45
for very specific특유한 purposes목적.
37
90000
2000
01:47
But what about the space공간 of all possible가능한 programs프로그램들?
38
92000
3000
01:50
Here's여기에 a representation대표 of a really simple단순한 program프로그램.
39
95000
3000
01:53
So, if we run운영 this program프로그램,
40
98000
2000
01:55
this is what we get.
41
100000
2000
01:57
Very simple
42
102000
2000
01:59
So let's try changing작고 보기 흉한 사람 the rule규칙
43
104000
2000
02:01
for this program프로그램 a little bit비트.
44
106000
2000
02:03
Now we get another다른 result결과,
45
108000
2000
02:05
still very simple단순한.
46
110000
2000
02:07
Try changing작고 보기 흉한 사람 it again.
47
112000
3000
02:10
You get something a little bit비트 more complicated복잡한.
48
115000
2000
02:12
But if we keep running달리는 this for a while,
49
117000
2000
02:14
we find out that although이기는 하지만 the pattern무늬 we get is very intricate뒤얽힌,
50
119000
3000
02:17
it has a very regular정규병 structure구조.
51
122000
3000
02:20
So the question문제 is: Can anything else그밖에 happen우연히 있다?
52
125000
3000
02:23
Well, we can do a little experiment실험.
53
128000
2000
02:25
Let's just do a little mathematical매우 정확한 experiment실험, try and find out.
54
130000
3000
02:29
Let's just run운영 all possible가능한 programs프로그램들
55
134000
3000
02:32
of the particular특별한 type유형 that we're looking at.
56
137000
2000
02:34
They're called전화 한 cellular세포질의 automata오토 마타.
57
139000
2000
02:36
You can see a lot of diversity상이 in the behavior행동 here.
58
141000
2000
02:38
Most가장 of them do very simple단순한 things,
59
143000
2000
02:40
but if you look along...을 따라서 all these different다른 pictures영화,
60
145000
2000
02:42

61

02:44
you start스타트 to see something interesting재미있는 going on.
62
149000
2000
02:46
So let's take a closer더 가까운 look
63

02:48

02:50
So here it is.
65

02:52
We're just following수행원 this very simple단순한 rule규칙 at the bottom바닥 here,

02:57
It's not at all what we're used to,
68
162000
2000
02:59
and I must절대로 필요한 것 say that, when I first saw this,

05:22
So I decided결정적인 to just try to see
127
307000

05:24
how much of the systematic체계적인 knowledge지식 that's out there in the world세계
128

05:27
we could make computable계산할 수 있는.
129
312000
2000
05:29
So, it's been a big, very complex복잡한 project계획,
130
314000
2000
05:31
which어느 I was not sure was going to work at all.
131
316000
3000
05:34
But I'm happy행복 to say it's actually사실은 going really well.
132
319000
3000
05:37
And last year we were able

135
326000
2000
05:43
Its purpose목적 is to be a serious진지한 knowledge지식 engine엔진
136
328000
3000

that computes계산하다 answers답변 to questions질문들.
137
331000
3000
05:49
So let's give it a try.
138
334000
2000
05:51
Let's start스타트 off with something really easy쉬운.

05:55
Very good. Okay.
141
340000
2000
05:57
So far멀리 so good.
142
342000
2000
05:59
(Laughter
143
344000
3000
06:02
Let's try something a little bit비트 harder열심히.
144
347000
3000
06:05
Let's do
145
350000
2000
자...
06:07
some mathy매시 thing,
146
352000
3000
06:10
and with luck it'll그것은 work out the answer대답
147
355000
3000
06:13
and try and tell us some interesting재미있는 things
148
358000
2000

06:17
We could ask청하다 it something about the real레알 world세계.
150
362000
3000
06:20
Let's say -- I don't know --
151
365000
2000
06:22
what's the GDPGDP of Spain스페인?
152
367000
3000
06:25
And it should be able할 수 있는 to tell us that.
153
370000
2000
06:27
Now we could compute계산하다 something related관련 to this,
154
372000
2000
06:29
let's say ... the GDPGDP of Spain스페인
155
374000
2000
06:31
divided각기 다른 by, I don't know,
156
376000
2000
06:33
the -- hmmm ...
157
378000
2000
06:35
let's say the revenue수익 of Microsoft마이크로 소프트.
158
380000
2000
06:37
(Laughter
159
382000
2000
06:39
The idea생각 is that we can just type유형 this in,
160
384000
2000

this kind종류 of question문제 in, however하나 we think of it.
161
386000
3000

06:44
So let's try asking질문 a question문제,
162
389000
2000
06:46
like a health건강 related관련 question문제.
163
391000
2000
06:48
So let's say we have a lab finding발견 that ...
164
393000
3000
06:51
you know, we have an LDLLDL level수평 of 140
165
396000

06:53

166
398000
3000
06:56
So let's type유형 that in, and now Wolfram볼프람 Alpha알파
167
401000
2000
06:58
will go and use available유효한 public공공의 health건강 data데이터
168
403000
2000

170
407000
3000
07:05
Or let's try asking질문 about, I don't know,
171
410000
3000
Station.
172
413000

07:10
And what's happening사고 here is that
173
415000

07:12
Wolfram볼프람 Alpha알파 is not just looking up something;

07:24
So Wolfram볼프람 Alpha알파 knows알고있다 about lots and lots of kinds종류 of things.
178
429000
3000

11:51
Let's try this here.
286
696000

11:53
But actually사실은 I think the most가장 exciting흥미 진진한 thing about this
287
698000

11:56

There's an inexhaustible지칠줄 모르는 supply공급 of programs프로그램들 out there.

14:05
Well, so, that leads리드 to kind종류 of an ultimate최고의 question문제:
339
830000
3000
14:08
Could it be that someplace어딘가 out there in the computational전산의 universe우주
340
833000
3000
14:11
we might find our physical물리적 인 universe우주?
341
836000
3000
14:14
Perhaps혹시 there's even some quite아주 simple단순한 rule규칙,
342
839000
2000
14:16
some simple단순한 program프로그램 for our universe우주.
343
841000
3000
14:19
Well, the history역사 of physics물리학 would have us believe
344
844000
2000
14:21
that the rule규칙 for the universe우주 must절대로 필요한 것 be pretty예쁜 complicated복잡한.
345
846000
3000
14:24
But in the computational전산의 universe우주,
346
849000
2000
14:26
we've우리는 now seen how rules규칙들 that are incredibly엄청나게 simple단순한
347

348
854000
3000
14:32
So could that be what's going on with our whole완전한 universe우주?
349
857000
3000
14:36
If the rules규칙들 for the universe우주 are simple단순한,
350
861000
2000
14:38
it's kind종류 of inevitable피할 수 없는 that they have to be

14:48
But in at least가장 작은 a large class수업 of cases사례,
356
873000
2000
14:50
one can think of the universe우주 as being존재
357
875000
2000
14:52
