ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fabian Hemmert - Designer
Fabian Hemmert studies the theory and philosophy of embodiment, resistance and thinghood.

Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

I am a Ph.D. student
0
1000
3000
00:19
and that means I have a question:
1
4000
2000
00:21
how can we make digital content graspable?
2
6000
3000
00:24
Because you see,
3
9000
2000
00:26
on the one hand, there is the digital world
4
11000
2000
00:28
and no question, many things are happening there right now.
5
13000
3000
00:32
And for us humans, it's not quite material, it's not really there --
6
17000
2000
00:34
it's virtual.
7
19000
2000
00:36
On the other hand, we humans,
8
21000
2000
00:38
we live in a physical world.
9
23000
2000
00:40
It's rich, it tastes good, it feels good, it smells good.
10
25000
3000
00:43
So the question is: how do we get the stuff over
11
28000
2000
00:45
from the digital into the physical?
12
30000
2000
00:47
That's my question.
13
32000
2000
00:49
If you look at the iPhone with its touch
14
34000
2000
00:51
and the Wii with its bodily activity,
15
36000
2000
00:53
you can see the tendency; it's getting physical.
16
38000
3000
00:56
The question is: what's next?
17
41000
3000
00:59
Now, I have three options that I would like to show you.
18
44000
3000
01:02
The first one is mass.
19
47000
2000
01:04
As humans, we are sensitive
20
49000
2000
01:06
to where an object in our hand is heavy.
21
51000
2000
01:08
So, could we use that in mobile phones?
22
53000
3000
01:11
Let me show you the weight-shifting mobile.
23
56000
2000
01:13
It is a mobile phone-shaped box
24
58000
2000
01:15
that has an iron weight inside, which we can move around,
25
60000
3000
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavy.
26
63000
2000
01:20
We shift the gravitational center of it.
27
65000
3000
01:23
For example, we can augment digital content
28
68000
3000
01:26
with physical mass.
29
71000
2000
01:28
So you move around the content on a display,
30
73000
2000
01:30
but you can also feel where it is just from the weight of the device.
31
75000
3000
01:34
Another thing it's good for is navigation --
32
79000
3000
01:37
it can guide you around in a city.
33
82000
2000
01:39
It can tell you by its weight,
34
84000
2000
01:41
"Okay, move right. Walk ahead. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the device all the time;
36
89000
3000
01:47
you have your eyes free to see the city.
37
92000
2000
01:49
Now, mass is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
01:52
the second thing, that's shape.
39
97000
2000
01:54
We're also sensitive to the shape of objects we have in [our] hands.
40
99000
3000
01:57
So if I download an e-book and it has 20 pages --
41
102000
3000
02:00
well, they could be thin, right --
42
105000
2000
02:02
but if it has 500 pages, I want to feel that "Harry Potter" --
43
107000
3000
02:05
it's thick. (Laughter)
44
110000
2000
02:07
So let me show you the shape-changing mobile.
45
112000
3000
02:10
Again, it's a mobile phone-shaped box,
46
115000
2000
02:12
and this one can change its shape.
47
117000
2000
02:16
We can play with the shape itself.
48
121000
2000
02:18
For example, it can be thin in your pocket,
49
123000
2000
02:20
which we of course want it to be;
50
125000
2000
02:22
but then if you hold it in your hand, it can lean towards you, be thick.
51
127000
3000
02:25
It's like tapered to the downside.
52
130000
2000
02:27
If you change the grasp, it can adjust to that.
53
132000
3000
02:31
It's also useful if you want to put it down on your nightstand to watch a movie
54
136000
3000
02:34
or use as an alarm clock, it stands.
55
139000
3000
02:37
It's fairly simple.
56
142000
2000
02:39
Another thing is,
57
144000
2000
02:41
sometimes we watch things on a mobile phone,
58
146000
2000
02:43
they are bigger than the phone itself.
59
148000
2000
02:45
So in that case -- like here, there's an app that's bigger than the phone's screen --
60
150000
3000
02:48
the shape of the phone could tell you,
61
153000
2000
02:50
"Okay, off the screen right here, there is more content.
62
155000
2000
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thicker at that edge.
64
159000
3000
02:57
The shape is the second thing.
65
162000
3000
03:00
The third thing operates on a different level.
66
165000
3000
03:03
As humans, we are social, we are empathic,
67
168000
3000
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
03:08
Wouldn't that be a way to make mobile phones more intuitive?
69
173000
3000
03:11
Think of a hamster in the pocket.
70
176000
2000
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to check it.
71
178000
3000
03:16
Let me show you the living mobile phone.
72
181000
3000
03:19
So, once again, mobile phone-shaped box,
73
184000
3000
03:22
but this one, it has a breath and a heartbeat,
74
187000
3000
03:25
and it feels very organic.
75
190000
2000
03:27
(Laughter)
76
192000
2000
03:29
And you can tell, it's relaxed right now.
77
194000
2000
03:31
Oh now, missed call, a new call,
78
196000
2000
03:33
new girlfriend maybe --
79
198000
2000
03:35
very exciting. (Laughter)
80
200000
3000
03:38
How do we calm it down?
81
203000
2000
03:40
You give it a pat behind the ears,
82
205000
2000
03:42
and everything is all right again.
83
207000
3000
03:45
So, that's very intuitive, and that's what we want.
84
210000
2000
03:47
So, what we have seen are three ways
85
212000
2000
03:49
to make the digital graspable for us.
86
214000
2000
03:51
And I think making it physical
87
216000
2000
03:53
is a good way to do that.
88
218000
2000
03:55
What's behind that is a postulation,
89
220000
2000
03:57
namely that not
90
222000
2000
дека
03:59
humans should get much more technical in the future;
91
224000
3000
04:02
rather than that,
92
227000
2000
04:04
technology, a bit more human.
93
229000
2000
04:07
(Applause)
94
232000
2000
