ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Andrew Bird - Musician
Andrew Bird is a virtual one-man band -- he’s a singer and songwriter and plays the violin, guitar, glockenspiel.

Why you should listen

Andrew Bird began to play the violin at age 4, learning to play Bach and Mozart by ear as if they were folk tunes. Though raised on classical repertoire, he still has little use for the written note and spins melody and words out of his cumulative experience, mixing elements of many genres without confining itself to any one in particular. While his early work with his band Bowl of Fire was influenced by pre-war jazz and showcased his violin skills, his sound began to evolve in an indie-folk direction after he went solo. But indie-folk -- or any single genre -- is just a backbone for a swirl of loops, samples and gorgeously rich instrumentation underpinning lyrics of mysterious import.

In 2002, Bird flew his Chicago coop for rural Illinois to live the rural life (yes, he had chickens) and set up his studio in a converted barn. This new environment inspired his 2003 solo album, Weather Systems, which has a surreal quality and poetic, thought-provoking lyrics. His sound progressed further with his 2005 album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, which used multitrack recorders and loop pedals to layer samples, and featured more guitar, whistling and glockenspiel. Bird released his fifth solo album, Noble Beast, in early 2009 to acclaim; he's now working on a film score and an art installation.

06:13
And so this is basicallyeigenlijk a songlied
29
358000
2000
Dit liedje gaat eigenlijk
06:15
about loopslussen,
30

over loops,
06:17
but not the kindsoort of loopslussen that I make up here.

07:17
And I've been thinkinghet denken about
51
422000
2000
Ik heb er over nagedacht
07:19
how that appliesis van toepassing acrossaan de overkant a wholegeheel spectrumspectrum of realmsrijken,
52
424000
4000
07:23
from, say, the ecologicalecologisch, okay.
53
428000
3000
bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van ecologie.
07:26
There seemslijkt to be a ruleregel in naturenatuur
54
431000
3000
07:29
that if you get too closedichtbij to where you camekwam from,
55
434000

07:32
it getskrijgt uglylelijk.
56
437000
2000
het slecht afloopt.
07:34
So like, you can't feedeten geven cowskoeien theirhun owneigen brainshersenen
57
439000
3000
07:37
or you get madboos cowkoe diseaseziekte,
58
442000
2000
want dan krijg je gekke-koeienziekte,
07:39
and inbreedinginteelt and incestincest
59
444000
2000
en inteelt en incest
07:41
and, let's see,
60
446000
2000
en, eens kijken,
07:43
what's the other one?
61
448000
2000
wat is een ander voorbeeld?
07:45
BiologicalBiologische -- there's autoimmuneauto-immuunziekten diseasesziekten,
62
450000
2000
Biologisch -- je hebt auto-immuunziektes,
07:47
where the bodylichaam attacksaanvallen itselfzelf
63
452000
2000
als het lichaam zichzelf aanvalt
07:49
a little too overzealouslyoverzealously
64
454000
2000
met iets teveel kracht
07:51
and destroysvernietigt the hostgastheer,
65
456000
2000
en zo de gast vernietigt,
07:53
or the personpersoon.
66
458000
2000
of de persoon.
07:58
And then -- okay, this is where we get to the songlied --
67
463000
3000
08:01
kindsoort of bridgesbruggen the gapkloof to the emotionalemotioneel.
68
466000
3000
08:04
Because althoughhoewel I've used scientificwetenschappelijk termstermen
69
469000
3000
Ik gebruik wel eens wetenschappelijke termen
08:07
in songssongs,
70
472000
2000
in liedjes,
08:09
it's very difficultmoeilijk sometimessoms to make them lyricallyrische.
71
474000
3000
08:12
And there's some things
72
477000
2000
En sommige dingen
08:14
you just don't need to have in songssongs.
73
479000
3000
kun je gewoon niet gebruiken in liedjes.
08:18
So I'm tryingproberen to bridgebrug this gapkloof
74
483000
2000
Ik probeer dus een brug te slaan
08:20
betweentussen this ideaidee and this melodymelodie.
75
485000
3000
tussen een idee en een melodie.
08:23
And so, I don't know if you've ever had this,
76
488000
3000
08:26
but when I closedichtbij my eyesogen sometimessoms
77
491000
3000
08:29
and try to sleepslaap,
78
494000
2000
en probeer te slapen
08:31
I can't stop thinkinghet denken about my owneigen eyesogen.
79
496000
3000
08:34
And it's like your eyesogen
80
499000
2000
Het is alsof je ogen
08:36
startbegin strainingoverbelasting to see themselveszich.
81
501000
2000
proberen zichzelf te zien.
08:38
That's what it feelsvoelt like to me.
82
503000
2000
Zo voelt het bij mij.
08:40
It's not pleasantaangenaam.
83
505000
2000
Geen fijn gevoel.
08:42
I'm sorry if I put that ideaidee in your headhoofd.
84
507000
2000
08:44
(LaughterGelach)
85
509000
2000
(Gelach)
08:46
It's impossibleonmogelijk, of courseCursus, for your eyesogen to see themselveszich,
86
511000
2000
08:48
but they seemlijken to be tryingproberen.
87
513000
3000
maar het lijkt of ze het proberen.
08:51
So that's gettingkrijgen a little more closerdichterbij to a personalpersoonlijk experienceervaring.
88
516000
3000
08:55
Or earsoren beingwezen ablein staat to hearhoren themselveszich --
89
520000
2000
Of oren die zichzelf kunnen horen --
08:57
it's just impossibleonmogelijk.
90
522000
2000
dat is gewoon onmogelijk;
08:59
That's the thing.
91
524000
2000
daar gaat het om.
09:01
So, I've been workingwerkend on this songlied
92
526000
3000
Ik heb gewerkt aan een liedje
09:04
that mentionsvermeldingen these things
93
529000
3000
dat over deze dingen gaat
09:07
and then alsoook imaginesverbeeldt
94
532000
2000
en tegelijk iemand voorstelt
09:09
a personpersoon who'swie is been so successfulgeslaagd
95
534000
2000
die zich zo goed heeft kunnen
09:11
at defendingverdedigen themselveszich from heartbreakHeartbreak
96
536000
3000

09:14
that they're left to do the deeddaad themselveszich,
97
539000
3000
dat hij het zichzelf moet aandoen,
09:17
if that's possiblemogelijk.
98
542000
2000
als dat mogelijk is.
09:19
And that's what the songlied is askingvragen.
99
544000
2000
Dat is wat dit liedje vraagt.
09:23
All right.
100
