Why you should listen

Anthony "Van" Jones is founder of the Ella Baker Center for human rights, based in Oakland, California, and of Green for All, an NGO dedicated to "building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty." His work points to the connection between green energy and job creation. He's the author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems. In 2009, US President Obama appointed Jones his Special Advisor on Green Jobs; Jones resigned the position later that year.

Jones is a senior fellow at the Center For American Progress and a senior policy advisor at Green For All. He holds a joint appointment at Princeton as a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and in the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

01:08
What people don't think about
22
53000
2000
Waar mensen niet aan denken
01:10
is: what if the oilolie- had madegemaakt it safelyveilig to shoreoever?
23
55000

What if the oilolie- actuallywerkelijk got where it was tryingproberen to go?

3000
01:16
Not only would it have been burnedverbrand in enginesmotoren

01:21
but there's a placeplaats calledriep "CancerKanker AlleyAlley,"
27
66000
3000
01:24
and the reasonreden it's calledriep "CancerKanker AlleyAlley"
28
69000
2000
en die heet "kankersteeg"
01:26
is because the petrochemicalpetrochemisch industryindustrie
29
71000
3000
omdat de petrochemische industrie
01:29
takes that oilolie- and turnsbochten it into plasticplastic
30
74000
2000
die olie omzet in plastic
01:31
and, in the processwerkwijze, killskills people.
31
76000
3000
en mensen doodt bij dat proces.
01:34
It shortensverkort the liveslevens of the people who liveleven there in the GulfGolf.
32
79000
3000
01:37
So oilolie- and petrochemicalspetrochemie are not just a problemprobleem where there's a spillmorsen;
33
82000
3000
01:40
they're a problemprobleem where there's not.
34
85000
2000
01:42
And what we don't oftenvaak appreciateop prijs stellen

is dat arme mensen de prijs betalen
01:46
for us to have these disposablewegwerp productsproducten.

2000
voor onze wegwerpproducten.
01:48
The other thing that we don't oftenvaak appreciateop prijs stellen
38
93000
2000
Een andere foute inschatting van ons is
01:50
is it's not just at the pointpunt of productionproductie that poorarm people sufferlijden.
39
95000
3000
01:53
PoorArme people alsoook sufferlijden
40
98000
2000
Arme mensen lijden ook
01:55
at the pointpunt of use.
41

2000
waar het gebruikt wordt.
01:57
Those of us who earnverdienen a certainzeker incomeinkomen levelniveau,
42
102000
2000
Wie van ons een bepaald inkomensniveau heeft,
01:59
we have something calledriep choicekeuze.
43
104000
2000
kan keuzes maken.
02:01
The reasonreden why you want to work hardhard and have a jobbaan
44

2000
02:03
and not be poorarm and brokekapot gegaan
45
108000

en niet arm en blut wilt zijn,
02:05
is so you can have choiceskeuzes, economiceconomisch choiceskeuzes.
46
110000
3000
is om keuzevrijheid te hebben, economische keuzes.
02:08
We actuallywerkelijk get a chancekans to chooseKiezen
47
113000
2000
We hebben de kans om te kiezen
02:10
not to use productsproducten
48
115000

geen producten te gebruiken
02:12
that have dangerousgevaarlijk, poisonousgiftig plasticplastic in them.
49
117000
2000
die gevaarlijk, giftig plastic bevatten.
02:14
Other people who are poorarm don't have those choiceskeuzes.
50
119000
3000
02:17
So low-incomelaag inkomen people oftenvaak are the onesdegenen
51
122000
2000
02:19
who are buyingbuying the productsproducten
52

02:24
Those are the people who windwind up
54
129000
2000
Dat zijn de mensen die
02:26
actuallywerkelijk ingestinginname van a disproportionateonevenredige amountbedrag

02:28

56
133000
3000
van dit giftig plastic binnenkrijgen en gebruiken.
02:31
And people say, "Well, they should just buykopen a differentverschillend productartikel."
57
136000
3000
02:34
Well, the problemprobleem with beingwezen poorarm is you don't have those choiceskeuzes.
58
139000
3000
02:37
You oftenvaak have to buykopen the cheapestgoedkoopste productsproducten.
59
142000
2000
02:39
The cheapestgoedkoopste productsproducten are oftenvaak the mostmeest dangerousgevaarlijk.
60
144000
3000
De goedkoopste producten zijn vaak het gevaarlijkst.
02:42
And if that weren'twaren niet badslecht enoughgenoeg,
61
147000

En alsof dat niet erg genoeg is,
02:44
if it wasn'twas niet just the productionproductie of plasticplastic
62
149000

02:58
OftenVaak, we think we're doing a good thing.
68
163000
2000
Vaak denken we dat we iets goeds doen.
03:00
You're in your officekantoor,
69

Je zit op kantoor,
03:02

03:04
and you think to yourselfjezelf, "Hey, I'm going to throwGooi this away.
71

03:07
No, I'm going to be virtuousdeugdzaam.
72

Nee, ik zal netjes zijn.

03:11
You think, "I put minede mijne in the blueblauw binbak,"
74
176000
2000
03:13
and then you look at your colleaguecollega and say,
75
178000
3000
03:16
"Why, you cretinCretin.
76

03:20
And we use that as a moralMoreel ticklekietelen.
78
185000
2000
En daarmee strelen we ons geweten.
03:22
We feel so good about ourselvesonszelf.
79

2000
We voelen ons er zo goed bij.
03:25
Maybe I'll feel good myselfmezelf.
80

Misschien vergeef ik het mezelf.
03:27
Not you, but I feel this way.
81
192000
3000
03:31
And so we kindsoort of have this kindsoort of moralMoreel feel-goodfeel good momentmoment.
82
196000
3000
03:34
But if we were to be ablein staat to followvolgen that little bottlefles

Maar als we dat flesje konden volgen

03:39
we would be shockedgeschokt to discoverontdekken that, all too oftenvaak,

05:56
We're back where we were in the 1970s.
141
341000
2000
05:58
And so we're on one planetplaneet,
142
343000
2000
We leven op één planeet,
06:00
and we have to be ablein staat to get to the rootwortel of these problemsproblemen.
143
345000
3000
06:03
Well the rootwortel of this problemprobleem, in my viewuitzicht,
144
348000
3000
06:06
is the ideaidee of disposabilityijzerbeschikbaarheid itselfzelf.
145
351000
3000
het idee van wegwerpen zelf.
06:09
You see, if you understandbegrijpen the linklink
146
354000
3000
Want als je het verband begrijpt
06:12
betweentussen what we're doing
147
357000
2000
tussen wat hoe wij bijdragen
06:14
to poisonvergiftigen and polluteverontreinigen the planetplaneet
148
359000
2000
06:16
and what we're doing to poorarm people,
149
361000
3000
en wat we arme mensen aandoen,
06:19
you arriveaankomen at a very troublingverontrustend,
150
364000
2000
kom je tot een verontrustend,
06:21
but alsoook very helpfulnuttig, insightin zicht:
151
366000
3000
maar ook erg nuttig inzicht:
06:24
In orderbestellen to trashuitschot the planetplaneet,
152
369000
2000
06:26
you have to trashuitschot people.
153
371000
2000
06:28
But if you createcreëren a worldwereld- where you don't trashuitschot people,
154
373000
3000
06:31
you can't trashuitschot the planetplaneet.
155
376000
2000
gooi je ook de planeet niet weg.
06:33
So now we are at a momentmoment
156
378000
2000
06:35
where the comingkomt eraan togethersamen of socialsociaal justicegerechtigheid as an ideaidee
157
380000
3000
06:38
and ecologyecologie as an ideaidee,
158
383000
2000
van ecologie samenkomen,
06:40
we finallyTenslotte can now see
159
385000
2000
we kunnen nu eindelijk inzien
06:42
that they are really, at the endeinde of the day, one ideaidee.
160
387000
3000
06:45
And it's the ideaidee that we don't have disposablewegwerp anything.
161
390000
3000
06:48
We don't have disposablewegwerp resourcesmiddelen.
162
393000
3000
We hebben geen wegwerpgrondstoffen.
06:51
We don't have disposablewegwerp speciessoorten.
163
396000
2000
We hebben geen wegwerpdiersoorten.
06:53
And we don't have disposablewegwerp people eithereen van beide.
164
398000
3000
En we hebben ook geen wegwerpmensen.
06:56
We don't have a throwawayweggooien planetplaneet,
165
401000
2000
We hebben geen wegwerpplaneet,
06:58
and we don't have throwawayweggooien childrenkinderen -- it's all preciouskostbaar.
166
403000
3000
en geen wegwerpkinderen -- het is allemaal kostbaar.
07:01
And as we all beginbeginnen to come back to that basicbasis- understandingbegrip,
167
406000
3000
07:04
newnieuwe opportunitieskansen for actionactie beginbeginnen to emergeopduiken.
168
409000
3000

07:22
DemocracyDemocratie, by the way,
176
427000
2000
Democratie betekent overigens,
07:24
meansmiddelen respectingmet inachtneming van the wisdomwijsheid of all people -- and we'llgoed get to that.
177
429000
2000
07:26
But biomimicrybiomimicry meansmiddelen respectingmet inachtneming van the wisdomwijsheid of all speciessoorten.
178
431000
3000
07:29
It turnsbochten out we're a prettymooi cleverknap speciessoorten.
179
434000
3000
07:32
This biggroot cortexschors, or whateverwat dan ook, we're prettymooi proudtrots of ourselvesonszelf.
180
437000
3000
07:35
But if we want to make something hardhard,
181
440000
3000
Maar als we iets hards willen maken,
07:38
we come up, "I know, I'm going to make a hardhard substancestof.
182
443000
3000
07:41
I know, I'm going to get vacuumsstofzuigers and furnacesovens

185
451000
3000
07:49
but I got this hardhard thing.
186
454000
3000
07:52
I'm so cleverknap,"
187

Ik ben zo slim."
07:54
and you look behindachter you, and there's destructionverwoesting all around you.
188
459000
3000
07:57
But guessraden what? You're so cleverknap,
189
462000
2000
Maar raad eens? Jij bent zo slim,
07:59
but you're not as cleverknap as a clamClam.
190
464000
2000
08:01
A clamshell'sde clamshell hardhard.
191
466000

Een venusschelp is hard.
08:03
There's no vacuumsstofzuigers. There's no biggroot furnacesovens.
192
468000
3000
Zonder vacuüms, zonder ovens,
08:06
There's no poisonvergiftigen. There's no pollutionverontreiniging.
193
471000
2000
zonder vergif, zonder vervuiling.
08:08
It turnsbochten out that our other speciessoorten

08:18
Well that insightin zicht of biomimicrybiomimicry,

08:24
I don't mean takingnemen a mousemuis

08:48
Well that ideaidee of biomimicrybiomimicry,
212
513000
3000
Dat concept van biomimicry,
08:51

respectingmet inachtneming van the wisdomwijsheid and the worthwaard of all people,
216
522000
3000
09:00
would give us a differentverschillend societymaatschappij.
217
525000

zou ons een andere maatschappij opleveren.
09:02
We would have a differentverschillend economyeconomie.
218

We zouden een andere economie hebben.
09:04
We would have a greengroen societymaatschappij

We zouden een groene maatschappij hebben

waar Dr. King trots op zou zijn.
09:08
That should be the goaldoel.
221
533000
2000
Dat zou het doel moeten zijn.
09:10
And the way that we get there is to first of all recognizeherken
222
535000
3000
09:13
that the ideaidee of disposabilityijzerbeschikbaarheid

Dus dat is consistent met het idee
10:28
that disposabilityijzerbeschikbaarheid is something we believe in.
252

3000
dat we in een wegwerpmaatschappij geloven.
10:31

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Van Jones - Social justice and green energy activist
Van Jones sees a clear link between social justice and green energy -- and works for both.
