ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Timothy Prestero - Designer
Timothy Prestero loves a flashy "concept car." But in his own work, he aims to design products for social impact, keeping users in mind.

Why you should listen

Timothy Prestero is the founder and CEO of Design that Matters, a nonprofit that collaborates with social entrepreneurs and volunteers to design products for the poor in developing countries. A former Peace Corps volunteer and MIT graduate, Tim has worked in West Africa, Latin America and Asia. He is a Martin Fellow at the MIT Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, a Draper Richards Kaplan Fellow, and was named an Ashoka Affiliate in 2004. His awards include the 2007 Social Venture Network Innovation Award, and the 2009 World Technology Award. This year, Design That Matters was named the winner of the National Design Award in Corporate and Institutional Achievement.

Tim and his team made a splash when they created the NeoNurture Infant Incubator, named one of TIME Magazine's "50 Best Inventions of 2010." However, the product wasn't a hit with manufacturers or with hospitals in developing countries and forever remained a prototype. Design That Matters learned an important lesson from the experience -- that good design must keep in mind who will procure equipment, who will be using it, as well as the myriad ways it could be used incorrectly. As Timothy says, "There's no such thing as a dumb user; there are only dumb products.

17
42182
3516
waarin je aan het uitzoeken bent
hoe de wereld in elkaar zit.
01:01
I'm going to startbegin with an examplevoorbeeld from some work that we did on newbornpasgeboren healthGezondheid.
18
45698
4117
Wij deden iets
voor de gezondheid van pasgeboren kinderen.
01:05
So here'shier is a problemprobleem:
19
49815
1984
Het probleem:
01:07
FourVier millionmiljoen babiesbabies around the worldwereld-,
20
51799
2534
vier miljoen baby's op de wereld,
01:10
mostlymeestal in developingontwikkelen countrieslanden,
21
54333
1199
meestal in ontwikkelingslanden,
01:11
diedood gaan everyelk yearjaar before theirhun first birthdayverjaardag,
22
55532
2966
sterven elk jaar voor hun eerste verjaardag,
01:14
even before theirhun first monthmaand of life.
23
58498
1852
zelfs voordat ze een maand oud zijn.
01:16
It turnsbochten out halfvoor de helft of those kidskinderen, or about 1.8 millionmiljoen newbornspasgeborenen around the worldwereld-,
24
60350
3479
De helft van die kinderen,
ongeveer 1,8 miljoen,
01:19
would make it if you could just keep them warmwarm
25
63829
2636
blijven leven als je ze warm houdt
01:22
for the first threedrie daysdagen, maybe the first weekweek.
26
66465
3100
tijdens de eerste drie dagen of de eerste week.
01:25
So this is a newbornpasgeboren intensiveintensief carezorg uniteenheid in KathmanduKathmandu, NepalNepal.
27

3650
Dit is een afdeling intensieve
voor pasgeborenen in Kathmandu, Nepal.
01:29
All of these kidskinderen in blanketsdekens belongbehoren in incubatorsincubators --
28
73215
3033
Al deze kinderen in dekens
horen thuis in couveuses -- zoiets.
01:32
something like this. So this is a donatedgedoneerd JapaneseJapans AtomAtoom incubatorIncubator
29
76248
4633
Atom uit Japan schonk deze.
01:36
that we foundgevonden in a NICUNICU in KathmanduKathmandu.
30
80881
2167
We vonden ze in Kathmandu.
01:38
This is what we want.
31
83048
2267
Dit is wat we willen.
01:41
ProbablyWaarschijnlijk what happenedgebeurd is a hospitalziekenhuis in JapanJapan upgradedupgrade theirhun equipmentuitrusting
32
85315
2617
Waarschijnlijk moderniseerde
een Japans ziekenhuis zijn apparatuur
01:43
and donatedgedoneerd theirhun oldoud stuffspul to NepalNepal.
33
87932
3600
en schonk zijn oud spul aan Nepal.
01:47
The problemprobleem is, withoutzonder technicianstechnici, withoutzonder spareReserve partsonderdelen,
34
91532
3683
Het probleem is, zonder technici,
zonder reserveonderdelen,
01:51
donationsdonaties like this very quicklysnel turnbeurt into junkrommel.
35
95215
3605
worden schenkingen zoals deze
heel snel rommel.
01:54
So this seemedscheen like a problemprobleem that we could do something about.
36
98820
3060
Een probleem dat we wel dachten aan te kunnen.
01:57
KeepingHouden van a babybaby warmwarm for a weekweek,
37
101880
2500
Een baby warmhouden voor een week:
02:00
that's not rocketraket sciencewetenschap.
38
104380
2000
hoe moeilijk kon het zijn.
02:02
So we got startedbegonnen.
39
106380
1783
We staken de handen uit de mouwen.
02:04
We partneredeen partnership with a leadingleidend medicalmedisch researchOnderzoek institutioninstelling here in BostonBoston.
40
108163
3118
We werden partners van een
belangrijke medische onderzoeksinstelling in Boston.
02:07
We conducteduitgevoerd monthsmaanden of usergebruiker researchOnderzoek overseasoverzee,
41
111281
3717
We voerden maandenlang onderzoek
op overzeese gebruikers en
02:10
tryingproberen to think like designersontwerpers, human-centeredmensgerichte designontwerp.
42
114998
2634
probeerden te denken als ontwerpers,
voor mensgerichte ontwerpen.
02:13
Let's figurefiguur out what people want.
43
117632
2943
Wat willen mensen?
02:16
We killedgedood thousandsduizenden of Post-itPost-it notesaantekeningen.
44
120575
1954
We gebruikten duizenden Post-it blaadjes.
02:18
We madegemaakt dozenstientallen of prototypesprototypes to get to this.
45
122529
2933
We maakten dozijnen prototypes
met dit als resultaat.
02:21
So this is the NeoNurtureNeoNurture InfantBaby IncubatorIncubator,
46
125462
3217
Dit is de 'NeoNurture Infant Incubator',
02:24
and this has a lot of smartssmarts builtgebouwd into it. And we feltvoelde great.
47
128679
4150
met veel ingebouwde intelligentie.
We voelden ons geweldig.
02:28
So the ideaidee here is, unlikeanders the conceptconcept carauto,
48
132829
2200
In tegenstelling tot de conceptauto,
02:30
we want to marrytrouwen something beautifulmooi
49
135029
2016
wilden we iets moois combineren
02:32
with something that actuallywerkelijk workswerken.
50
137045
2201
met iets dat écht werkte.
02:35
And our ideaidee is that this designontwerp
51
139246
1916
Ons ontwerp zou fabrikanten inspireren
en invloedrijke mensen zouden dit model bouwen.
02:37
would inspireinspireren manufacturersfabrikanten and other people of influenceinvloed
52
141162
3984
Ons ontwerp zou fabrikanten inspireren
en invloedrijke mensen zouden dit model bouwen.
02:41
to take this modelmodel- and runrennen with it.
53
145146
2533
Ons ontwerp zou fabrikanten inspireren
en invloedrijke mensen zouden dit model bouwen.
02:43
Here'sHier is the badslecht newsnieuws:
54
147679
3518
Het slechte nieuws:
02:47
The only babybaby ever actuallywerkelijk put insidebinnen the NeoNurtureNeoNurture IncubatorIncubator
55
151197
3348
de enige baby die ooit
in de NeoNurture Incubator lag,
02:50
was this kidkind duringgedurende a Time magazinetijdschrift photofoto shootschieten.
56
154545
3917
was dit kind tijdens een fotosessie
van Time magazine.
02:54
So recognitionerkenning is fantasticfantastisch.
57
158462
2432
Erkenning is fantastisch.
02:56
We want designontwerp to get out for people to see it.
58
160894
3100
Wij wilden onze ontwerpen naar buiten brengen.
02:59
It wonwon lots of awardsawards.
59
163994
1234
Ons ontwerp won vele prijzen.
03:01
But it feltvoelde like a boobybooby prizeprijs.
60
165228
2048
Het voelde echter aan als een poedelprijs.
03:03
We wanted to make beautifulmooi things that are going to make the worldwereld- a better placeplaats,
61
167276
6515
Wij wilden mooie dingen maken
die de wereld verbeterden.
03:09
and I don't think this kidkind was even in it long enoughgenoeg to get warmwarm.
62
173791
3377
Dit kind lag niet lang genoeg
in de couveuse om warm te worden.
03:13
So it turnsbochten out that designontwerp for inspirationinspiratie
63
177168
2899
Het komt erop neer dat ontwerpen voor inspiratie
03:15
doesn't really --
64
180067
2518
niet echt ...
03:18
I guessraden what I would say is, for us, for what I want to do,
65
182585
3549
Voor wat ik wilde doen,
03:22
it's eithereen van beide too slowlangzaam or it just doesn't work, it's ineffectiveineffectief.
66
186134
4050
was het of te langzaam of het werkte niet.
Het is ineffectief.
03:26
So really I want to designontwerp for outcomesuitkomsten.
67
190184
2800
Ik wil echter ontwerpen voor het resultaat.
03:28
I don't want to make beautifulmooi stuffspul.
68
192984
1500
Ik wil geen mooie dingen maken.
03:30
I want to make the worldwereld- a better placeplaats.
69
194484
1734
Ik wil de wereld verbeteren.
03:32
So when we were designingontwerpen NeoNurtureNeoNurture,
70
196218
2350
Bij het ontwerp van NeoNurture
03:34
we paidbetaald a lot of attentionaandacht to the people who are going to use this thing --
71
198568
2923
was onze focus gericht op de mensen
die het ontwerp zouden gebruiken:
03:37
for examplevoorbeeld, poorarm familiesgezinnen, rurallandelijk doctorsartsen,
72
201491
2560
arme families, plattelandsdokters,
03:39
overloadedoverbelast nursesverpleegkundigen, even repairreparatie technicianstechnici.
73
204051
3650
overbelaste verpleegsters, zelfs herstellers.
03:43
We thought we had all our basesbases coveredbedekt, we'dwij hadden donegedaan everything right.
74
207701
2649
We dachten dat we alles onder controle hadden.
03:46
Well it turnsbochten out there's this wholegeheel constellationsterrenbeeld of people
75
210350
2950
Het blijkt echter dat er een hoop mensen
03:49
who have to be involvedbetrokken in a productartikel for it to be successfulgeslaagd:
76
213300
3100
betrokken moeten worden bij een succesvol product:
03:52
manufacturingfabricage, financingfinanciering, distributiondistributie, regulationregulatie.
77
216400
2701
productie, financiën, distributie, regelgevers.
03:55
MichaelMichael FreeGratis at PATHPAD sayszegt you have to figurefiguur out who will "chooseKiezen, use and paybetalen the duescontributie"
78
219101
4994
Michael Free van PATH zegt dat je moet uitzoeken
wie zal '‘kiezen, gebruiken en betalen'
03:59
for a productartikel like this.
79
224095
1785
voor een product als dit.
04:01
And I have to askvragen the questionvraag --
80
225880
2184
Ik stel dezelfde vraag als de durfkapitalisten:
04:03
VC'sVC's always askvragen, "SirSir, what is your businessbedrijf, and who is your customerklant?"
81
228064
3021
"Wat is je bedrijf en wie zijn jouw klanten?"
04:06
Who is our customerklant? Well here'shier is an examplevoorbeeld.
82
231098
3022
Wie zijn onze klanten? Een voorbeeld.
04:10
This is a BangladeshiBangladesh hospitalziekenhuis directorregisseur outsidebuiten his facilityfaciliteit.
83
234120
3379
Dit is een Bangladese directeur
voor zijn ziekenhuis.
04:13
It turnsbochten out he doesn't buykopen any of his equipmentuitrusting.
84
237499
2265
Hij koopt geen enkel apparaat.
04:15
Those decisionsbeslissingen are madegemaakt by the MinistryMinisterie of HealthGezondheid
85
239764
2784
Dat beslist het Ministerie van Gezondheid
04:18
or by foreignbuitenlands donorsdonoren,
86
242548
2067
of buitenlandse schenkers
04:20
and it just kindsoort of showsshows up.
87
244615
1400
en het verschijnt gewoon.
04:21
SimilarlyOp dezelfde manier, here'shier is a multinationalmultinationaal medicalmedisch deviceapparaat manufacturerfabrikant.
88
246015
3300
Hier is een multinational,
fabrikant van medische apparaten.
04:25
It turnsbochten out they'veze hebben got to fishvis where the fishvis are.
89
249315
2766
Ze moeten vissen waar er vissen zijn.
04:27
So it turnsbochten out that in emergingopkomende marketsmarkten, where the fishvis are,
90
252081
3633
In opkomende markten zijn de vissen
04:31
are the emergingopkomende middlemidden- classklasse of these countrieslanden --
91
255714
3201
bij de opkomende middenklasse
04:34
diseasesziekten of affluencerijkdom: hearthart- diseaseziekte, infertilityonvruchtbaarheid.
92
258915
3501
met rijkeluisziekten zoals hartziekten
en onvruchtbaarheid.
04:38
So it turnsbochten out that designontwerp for outcomesuitkomsten in one aspectaspect
93
262416
4832
Ontwerpen voor resultaten
04:43
really meansmiddelen thinkinghet denken about designontwerp for manufacturevervaardiging and distributiondistributie.
94
267248
3117
is de productie en distributie in gedachten houden.
04:46
Okay, that was an importantbelangrijk lessonles.
95
270365
1883
Dat was een belangrijke les.
04:48
SecondTweede, we tooknam that lessonles and triedbeproefd to pushDuwen it into our nextvolgende projectproject.
96
272248
4883
We pasten deze les toe op ons volgend project.
04:53
So we startedbegonnen by findingbevinding a manufacturerfabrikant,
97
277131
2599
We zochten eerst een producent,
04:55
an organizationorganisatie calledriep MTTSMTT 'S in VietnamVietnam,
98
279730
1734
‘MTTS, een organisatie in Vietnam.
04:57
that manufacturesproduceert newbornpasgeboren carezorg technologiestechnologieën for SoutheastZuidoosten AsiaAsia.
99
281464
3467
Zij produceren zorgtechnologie
voor pasgeboren kinderen in Zuidoost Azië.
05:00
Our other partnerpartner is EastEast MeetsVoldoet aan WestWest.
100
284931
2033
Een andere partner is ‘East Meets West’:
05:02
This is an AmericanAmerikaanse foundationfundament that distributesdistribueert that technologytechnologie
101
286964
2883
een Amerikaanse stichting
die deze technologie distribueert
05:05
to poorarm hospitalsziekenhuizen around that regionregio.
102
289847
2667
naar arme ziekenhuizen in die regio.
05:08
So we startedbegonnen with them sayinggezegde, "Well what do you want?
103
292514
2769
We begonnen met hen te werken en vroegen:
"Wat willen jullie?
05:11
What's a problemprobleem you want to solveoplossen?"
104
295283
1465
Welk probleem willen jullie oplossen?"
05:12
And they said, "Well let's work on newbornpasgeboren jaundicegeelzucht."
105
296748
2432
Ze zeiden:
"Geelzucht bij pasgeborenen."
05:15
So this is anothereen ander one of these mind-bogglingverbijsterend globalglobaal problemsproblemen.
106
299180
3437
Dit is een van de
verbijsterende wereldwijde problemen.
05:18
So jaundicegeelzucht affectsbeïnvloedt two-thirdstweederde of newbornspasgeborenen around the worldwereld-.
107
302617
4164
Geelzucht beïnvloedt tweederde
van de pasgeborenen rondom de wereld.
05:22
Of those newbornspasgeborenen, one in 10 roughlyongeveer,
108
306781
4991
Van de onbehandelde pasgeborenen,
ongeveer 1 op 10,
05:27
if it's not treatedbehandelde, the jaundicegeelzucht getskrijgt so severeerge, ernstige
109
311772
2437
wordt de geelzucht zo ernstig
05:30
that it leadsleads to eithereen van beide a life-longlevenslang disabilityhandicap,
110
314209
3084
dat het leidt tot een levenslange handicap,
05:33
or the kidskinderen could even diedood gaan.
111
317293
1884
of de dood.
05:35
There's one way to treattraktatie jaundicegeelzucht,
112
319177
2334
Geelzucht kan behandeld worden
05:37
and that's what's calledriep an exchangeuitwisseling transfusiontransfusie.
113
321511
2549
met een wisseltransfusie.
05:39
So as you can imaginestel je voor, that's expensiveduur and a little bitbeetje dangerousgevaarlijk.
114
324060
3336
Dat is duur en soms gevaarlijk.
05:43
There is anothereen ander curegenezen.
115
327396
2364
Er is een andere oplossing.
05:45
It's very technologicaltechnologisch, it's very complexcomplex, a little dauntingontmoedigend.
116
329760
5400
Ze is technologisch, heel complex
en een beetje ontmoedigend.
05:51
You've got to shineschijnen blueblauw lightlicht on the kidkind --
117
335160
2967
Je moet blauw licht op het kind schijnen,
05:54
brighthelder blueblauw lightlicht on as much of the skinhuid as you can coverdeksel.
118
338127
4066
fel blauw licht op zoveel mogelijk huid.
05:58
How is this a hardhard problemprobleem?
119
342193
2500
Waarom is dit een moeilijk probleem?
06:00
So I wentgegaan to MITMIT,
120
344693
3480
Ik stapte naar MIT en
06:04
Okay, we'llgoed figurefiguur that out. (LaughterGelach)
121
348173
3237
we zochten het uit.
(Gelach)
06:07
So here'shier is an examplevoorbeeld. This is an overheadoverhead phototherapyFototherapie deviceapparaat
122
351410
2883
Dit is een overhangend apparaat voor fototherapie
06:10
that's designedontworpen for AmericanAmerikaanse hospitalsziekenhuizen.
123
354293
2816
ontworpen voor Amerikaanse ziekenhuizen.
06:13
And here'shier is how it's supposedvermeend to be used.
124
357109
2434
Zo moet het gebruikt worden.
06:15
So it's over the babybaby, illuminatingverlichtings- a singlesingle patientgeduldig.

06:23
here'shier is how it's actuallywerkelijk used.
128
367160
1866
Zo wordt het daar gebruikt.
06:24
The effectivenesseffectiviteit of phototherapyFototherapie is a functionfunctie of lightlicht intensityintensiteit.
129
369026
3151
De effectiviteit van fototherapie
is afhankelijk van de lichtintensiteit.
06:28
So these darkdonker blueblauw squarespleinen showtonen you where it's effectiveeffectief phototherapyFototherapie.
130
372177

De donkerblauwe vierkanten tonen

06:31
Here'sHier is what it lookslooks like underonder actualwerkelijk use.
131

Wat blijkt nu.
06:34
So those kidskinderen on the edgesranden

06:35
aren'tzijn niet actuallywerkelijk receivingontvangende effectiveeffectief phototherapyFototherapie.

06:37
But withoutzonder trainingopleiding, withoutzonder some kindsoort of lightlicht metermeter,
134
382076

Zonder opleiding en zonder de juiste lichtmeter,
06:40
how would you know?
135
384811
1965
hoe zou je het weten?
06:42
We see other examplesvoorbeelden of problemsproblemen like this.
136
386776

We zien nog gelijkaardige dingen.
06:44
So here'shier is a neonatalneonatale intensiveintensief carezorg uniteenheid
137

Dit is een neonatale intensive care afdeling

06:59
It's not uncommonongewoon for MomMoeder to put a blanketdeken over the babybaby.
144

Het gebeurt soms dat moeder

07:02
From a phototherapyFototherapie standpointstandpunt, maybe not the bestbeste behaviorgedrag.
145
407043

Vanuit een fototherapie-standpunt:
niet de beste handeling.
07:06
In factfeit that soundsklanken kindsoort of dumbstom.
146
411010
3000
Het lijkt nogal dom.
07:09
ExceptBehalve, what we'vewij hebben learnedgeleerd
147
414010
2166
Wij hebben geleerd
07:12
is that there's no suchzodanig thing as a dumbstom usergebruiker -- really is what we'vewij hebben learnedgeleerd.
148
416176
3668
dat er geen domme gebruikers bestaan.
07:15
There are only dumbstom productsproducten.
149
419844
1666
Er bestaan alleen maar domme producten.
07:17
We have to think like existentialistsexistentialisten.
150
421510
1683
We moeten als existentialisten denken.
07:19
It's not the paintingschilderij we would have paintedgeschilderd,
151
423193
1515
Het is niet het schilderij
dat we geschilderd zouden hebben,
07:20
it's the paintingschilderij that we actuallywerkelijk paintedgeschilderd.
152
424708
2000
het is het schilderij dat we echt schilderden.
07:22
It's the use -- designedontworpen for actualwerkelijk use.
153
426708
3325
Ontwerpen voor daadwerkelijk gebruik.
07:25
How are people actuallywerkelijk going to use this?
154
430033
1349
Hoe zullen mensen het in werkelijkheid gebruiken?
07:27
So similarlyevenzo, when we think about our partnerpartner MTTSMTT 'S,
155
431382
4199
Hetzelfde, als we denken aan onze partner MTTS.
07:31
they'veze hebben madegemaakt some amazingverbazingwekkend technologiestechnologieën for treatingbehandelen newbornpasgeboren illnessesziekten.

Dit is een overhangende verwarmer en een CPAP.
07:36
They're inexpensivegoedkoop, really ruggedruige.
158

Die zijn niet duur en heel robuust.
07:39
They'veZe hebben treatedbehandelde 50,000 kidskinderen in VietnamVietnam with this technologytechnologie.
159
443747
3116
Ze hebben 50.000 kinderen behandeld

07:42
But here'shier is the problemprobleem:
160
446863
1067
Maar het probleem:
07:43
EveryElke doctordoctor in the worldwereld-, everyelk hospitalziekenhuis administratorbeheerder,
161
447930
2568
elke dokter in de wereld,
iedere ziekenhuisbeheerder
07:46
has seengezien TVTV -- cursevloek those "E.R." rerunsherhalingen.
162
450498
4916
kijkt naar tv en vervloekt
de herhalingen van ‘E.R’.
07:51
TurnsBochten out they all know what a medicalmedisch deviceapparaat is supposedvermeend to look like.
163
455414
4365
We weten allemaal
hoe een medisch apparaat eruit moet zien.
07:55
They want BuckBuck RogersRogers, they don't want effectiveeffectief.
164
459779
3534
Ze willen Buck Rogers,
geen effectiviteit.
07:59
It soundsklanken crazygek, it soundsklanken dumbstom,
165
463313
2518
Het klinkt gekt, het klinkt dom,
08:01
but there are actuallywerkelijk hospitalsziekenhuizen who would ratherliever have no equipmentuitrusting
166
465831
2385
maar er zijn ziekenhuizen
die nog liever geen apparatuur hebben
08:04
than something that lookslooks cheapgoedkoop and crummyCrummy.
167
468216
2466
dan iets dat er goedkoop en waardeloos uitziet.
08:06
So again, if we want people to trustvertrouwen a deviceapparaat,
168
470682
3467
Als we willen dat mensen een apparaat vertrouwen,
08:10
it has to look trustworthybetrouwbaar.
169
474149
1703
moet het er betrouwbaar uitzien.
08:11
So thinkinghet denken about outcomesuitkomsten,
170
475852
1515
Denk aan de resultaten:
08:13
it turnsbochten out appearancesoptredens matterer toe doen.
171
477367
2401
uiterlijke eigenschappen zijn blijkbaar belangrijk.
08:15
So we tooknam all that informationinformatie togethersamen.
172
479768
2317
We namen al die informatie en
08:17
We triedbeproefd, this time, to get it right.
173
482085
2282
probeerden het deze keer goed te doen.
08:20
And here'shier is what we developedontwikkelde.
174
484367
1401
Dit is ons ontwerp:
08:21
So this is the FireflyFirefly PhototherapyFototherapie DeviceApparaat,
175
485768
2085
het fototherapie-apparaat ‘Firefly.
08:23
exceptbehalve this time we didn't stop at the conceptconcept carauto.
176
487853
3049
Deze keer gingen we verder dan de conceptauto.
08:26
So from the very beginningbegin we startedbegonnen by talkingpratend to manufacturersfabrikanten.
177
490902
3632
Vanaf het prille begin spraken we met producenten.
08:30
Our goaldoel is to make a state-of-the-arthet nieuwste van het nieuwste productartikel
178
494534
3068
We wilden een perfect product
08:33
that our partnerpartner MTTSMTT 'S can actuallywerkelijk manufacturevervaardiging.
179
497602
2833
dat onze partner MTTS kon produceren.
08:36
So our goaldoel is to studystudie how they work, the resourcesmiddelen they have accesstoegang to,
180
500435
3900
Wij bestudeerden hoe zij werken
en welke hulpbronnen zij beschikbaar hebben,
08:40
so that they can make this productartikel.
181
504335
2583
zodat ze dit product kunnen maken.
08:42
So that's the designontwerp for manufacturevervaardiging questionvraag.
182
506918
3102
Dat is ontwerpen voor het productievraagstuk.
08:45
When we think about actualwerkelijk use,
183
510020
1265
Als we denken aan het dagelijkse gebruik:
08:47
you'llje zult noticekennisgeving that FireflyFirefly has a singlesingle bassinetwandelwagen.
184
511285
2483
de Firefly heeft één wiegje,
08:49
It only fitspast bij a singlesingle babybaby.
185
513768
2066
geschikt voor maar één baby.
08:51
And the ideaidee here is it's obviousduidelijk how you oughtmoeten to use this deviceapparaat.
186
515834
4333
Het is onmiddellijk duidelijk
hoe je dit apparaat moet gebruiken.
08:56
If you try to put more than one kidkind in,
187
520167
1518
Als je er meer dan één kind probeert in te krijgen,
08:57
you're stackingstapelen them on toptop of eachelk other.
188
521685
1533
moet je ze op elkaar stapelen.
08:59
(LaughterGelach)
189
523218
1136
(Gelach)
09:00
So the ideaidee here is we say, you want to make it hardhard to use wrongfout.
190
524354
4214
Het moet moeite kosten
om het apparaat verkeerd te gebruiken.
09:04
In other wordstekst, you want to make the right way to use it
191
528568
1983
We wilden dat de juiste manier van gebruik
09:06
the easiestgemakkelijkst way to use it.
192
530551
2468
de gemakkelijkste manier was.
09:08
AnotherEen ander examplevoorbeeld: Again, sillydwaas mommam.
193
533019
2932
Nog een voorbeeld van een dwaze moeder.
09:11
SillyDom mommam thinksdenkt her babybaby lookslooks coldkoude, wants to put a blanketdeken over the babybaby.
194
535951
3000
Dwaze moeder denkt dat haar baby kou heeft,
en wil een deken over de baby leggen.
09:14
Well that's why we have lightslichten abovebovenstaand and belowbeneden the babybaby in FireflyFirefly.
195
538951
3067
De Firefly heeft lichten boven én onder de baby.
09:17
So if mommam does put a blanketdeken over the babybaby,
196
542018
2084
Als moeder een deken over de baby legt,
09:20
it's still receivingontvangende effectiveeffectief phototherapyFototherapie from belowbeneden.
197
544102
3184
krijgt de baby nog steeds
effectieve fototherapie onderaan.
09:23

Wat deden we met Firefly?
09:54
the problemprobleem is electronicselektronica get hotwarm
