ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rob Legato - Visual Effects Guru
Rob Legato creates surprising and creative visual illusions for movies.

Why you should listen

Did we really see what we thought we saw? Rob Legato creates visual illusions for movies -- thinking deeply both about vfx's expanding tech power and the truly new creative processes that can result. Legato won his first Oscar in 1998 for his work on James Cameron's Titanic, after several years in television supervising effects on two Star Trek series. His 2012 Oscar win for Hugo, the 3D film about a boy who lives alone in a Paris train station, underscores his fascinating partnership with Martin Scorsese -- doing digital effects on documentaries and new classics like The Departed.

He's worked with the big effects houses like Sony Imageworks and Digital Domain, but is now fascinated with the nimble new workflows made possible with digital tools. He designed the "virtual cinematography pipeline" that let James Cameron shoot Avatar like a feature film, not a software project. We know that fx can create new worlds -- but how can these tools unlock new creativity?

I worked on a film called "Apollo 13,"
0
613
2028
Eu trabalhei em um filme chamado "Apolo 13",
00:18
and when I worked on this film, I discovered something
1
2641
1880
e quando trabalhei neste filme, descobri algo
00:20
about how our brains work, and how our brains work
2
4521
2463
00:22
is that, when we're sort of infused with
3
6984
2279
quando estamos tomados pelo
00:25
either enthusiasm or awe or fondness or whatever,
4
9263
4246
00:29
it changes and alters our perception of things.
5
13509
2408
ele muda e altera nossa percepção das coisas.
00:31
It changes what we see. It changes what we remember.
6
15917
2177
Muda o que vemos. Muda o que lembramos.
00:33
And as an experiment, because I dauntingly create
7
18094
3508
Como experiência, pois eu impus a mim
00:37
a task for myself of recreating a Saturn V launch
8
21602
3920
a desafiadora tarefa de recriar o lançamento do Saturno V
00:41
for this particular movie, because I put it out there,
9
25522
3422
para este filme, por ser algo arriscado,
00:44
I felt a little nervous about it, so I need to do an experiment
10
28944
2057
senti-me um pouco nervoso, daí eu precisava testar
00:46
and bring a group of people like this in a projection room
11
31001
3608
00:50
and play this stock footage, and when I played this
12
34609
2680
00:53
stock footage, I simply wanted to find out
13
37289
2801
trecho, queria apenas descobrir
00:55
what people remembered, what was memorable about it?
14
40090
3415
do que as pessoas se lembravam, o que fora marcante?
00:59
What should I actually try to replicate?
15
43505
2003
O que eu deveria tentar reproduzir?
01:01
What should I try to emulate to some degree?
16
45508
3771
O que eu deveria tentar imitar?
01:05
So this is the footage that I was showing everybody.
17
49279
3089
01:08
And what I discovered is, because of the nature
18
52368
2682
01:10
of the footage and the fact that we're doing this film,
19
55050
2198
01:13
there was an emotion that was built into it
20
57248
1953
havia uma emoção intrínseca
01:15
and our collective memories of what this launch meant to us
21
59201
3078
01:18
and all these various things.
22
62279
1674
e todo o resto.
01:19
When I showed it, and I asked, immediately after
23
63953
2032
Quando mostrei, e perguntei, logo depois
01:21
the screening was over, what they thought of it,
24
65985
2791
da projeção, o que achavam disso,
01:24
what was your memorable shots, they changed them.
25
68776
2466
01:27
They were -- had camera moves on them.
26
71242
2378
Eles estavam --tivesse a câmara se dirigido a eles.
01:29
They had all kinds of things. Shots were combined,
27
73620
2676
Eles tiveram todo o tipo de reação. As tomadas foram associadas,
01:32
and I was just really curious, I mean, what the hell
28
76296
2982
01:35
were you looking at just a few minutes ago
29
79278
1367
vocês estavam vendo há poucos minutos
01:36
and how come, how'd you come up with this sort of description?
30
80645
3844
e como chegaram a esta descrição?
01:40
And what I discovered is, what I should do is not actually
31
84489
3848
01:44
replicate what they saw, is replicate what they remembered.
32
88337
3690
01:47
So this is our footage of the launch, based on, basically,
33
92027
3982
Aí está o nosso trecho do lançamento, baseado,
01:51
taking notes, asking people what they thought, and then
34
96009
2708
01:54
the combination of all the different shots and all
35
98717
2442
01:57
the different things put together created their sort of
36
101159
1928
todas as coisas colocadas juntas criaram para elas algo como
01:58
collective consciousness of what they remembered
37
103087
2039
uma consciência coletiva do que lembraram
02:01
it looked like, but not what it really looked like.
38
105126
1650
02:02
So this is what we created for "Apollo 13."
39
106776
2998
02:05
(Launch noises)
40
109774
4467
(Barulho do lançamento)
02:10
So literally what you're seeing now is the confluence
41
114241
2766
02:12
of a bunch of different people, a bunch of different memories,
42
117007
2061
02:14
including my own, of taking a little bit of liberty
43
119068
3298
02:18
with the subject matter.
44
122366
1724
em relação ao assunto.
02:19
I basically shot everything with short lenses,
45
124090
2637
Basicamente filmei tudo em close,
02:22
which means that you're very close to the action,
46
126727
1917
ou seja, bem perto da ação,
02:24
but framed it very similarly to the long lens shots
47
128644
2290
02:26
which gives you a sense of distance, so I was basically
48
130934
2640
02:29
was setting up something that would remind you
49
133574
1984
montando algo que pudesse fazê-los relembrar
02:31
of something you haven't really quite seen before. (Music)
50
135558
3472
02:34
And then I'm going to show you exactly what it is
51
139030
2531
Agora vou mostrar exatamente a que
02:37
that you were reacting to when you were reacting to it.
52
141561
3601
02:41
(Music)
53
145162
12895
(Música)
02:53
Tom Hanks: Hello, Houston, this is Odyssey.
54
158072
2115
Tom Hanks: Alô, Houston, aqui é Odisséia.
02:56
It's good to see you again. (Cheers) (Music)
55
160187
2791
É bom vê-los novamente. (Vivas) (Música)
02:58
Rob Legato: I pretend they're clapping for me.
56
162978
2440
Rob Legato: Finjo que eles estão me aplaudindo.
03:01
(Laughter)
57
165418
2158
(Risos)
03:03
So now I'm in a parking lot. Basically it's a tin can,
58
167576
3405
Agora estou em um estacionamento. Basicamente, é uma lata,
03:06
and I'm basically recreating the launch with
59
170981
1825
e eu estou recriando o lançamento com
03:08
fire extinguishers, fire, I have wax that I threw
60
172806
4339
extintores de incêncio, fogo, atirei cera
03:13
in front of the lens to look like ice, and so basically
61
177145
3345
03:16
if you believed any of the stuff that I just showed you,
62
180490
2817
03:19
what you were reacting to, what you're emoting to,
63
183307
3181
você estava reagindo, estava se emocionando,
03:22
is something that's a total falsehood, and I found that
64
186488
2435
com algo totalmente falso, e descobri que
03:24
really kind of fascinating.
65
188923
1394
isto é muito fascinante.
03:26
And in this particular case, this is the climax of the movie,
66
190317
2976
03:29
and, you know, the weight of achieving it was simply
67
193293
3209
03:32
take a model, throw it out of a helicopter, and shoot it.
68
196502
3570
pegar um modelo, atirá-lo de um helicóptero, e filmá-lo.
03:35
And that's simply what I did.
69
200072
2003
Foi simplesmente o que fiz.
03:37
That's me shooting, and I'm a fairly mediocre operator,
70
202075
2477
Aqui estou filmando, e sou um fotógrafo um tanto medíocre,
03:40
so I got that nice sense of verisimilitude, of a kind of,
71
204552
3539
03:43
you know, following the rocket all the way down,
72
208091
2832
você sabe, seguindo o foguete durante toda a queda,
03:46
and giving that little sort of edge, I was desperately
73
210923
1679
e deixando uma pequena moldura, estava desesperadamente
03:48
trying to keep it in frame. So then I come up to the next thing.
74
212602
3500
tentando manter o enquadramento. Daí passei para o próximo ponto.
03:52
We had a NASA consultant who was actually an astronaut,
75
216102
2597
03:54
who was actually on some of the missions, of Apollo 15,
76
218699
3005
03:57
and he was there to basically double check my science.
77
221704
3519
e ele estava lá basicamente para verificar minha ciência.
04:01
And, I guess somebody thought they needed to do that.
78
225223
3521
04:04
(Laughter)
79
228744
1732
(Risos)
04:06
I don't know why, but they thought they did.
80
230476
2588
04:08
So we were, he's a hero, he's an astronaut, and
81
233064
4142
Nós estávamos, ele é um herói, é um astronauta, e
04:13
we're all sort of excited, and, you know, I gave myself
82
237206
2806
estávamos meio empolgados, e você sabe, eu tenho
04:15
the liberty of saying, you know, some of the shots I did
83
240012
2471
04:18
didn't really suck that bad.
84
242483
2409
não estavam assim tão ruins.
04:20
And so maybe, you know, we were feeling kind of a little
85
244892
3260
Então talvez, estávamos nos sentindo um tanto
04:24
good about it, so I brought him in here, and he needed
86
248152
2457
bem, daí eu o trouxe até aqui, e ele precisava
04:26
to really check and see what we were doing,
87
250609
2537
verificar e ver o que eu estava fazendo,
04:29
and basically give us our A plus report card,
88
253146
2986
e nos dar nota 10 no boletim,
04:32
and so I showed him some shots we were working on,
89
256132
1965
e mostrei a ele algumas tomadas que estávamos fazendo,
04:33
and waiting for the reaction that you hope for,
90
258097
3110
04:37
which is what I got. (Music) (Launch noises)
91
261207
3089
e foi isto que consegui. (Música) (Barulho do lançamento)
04:40
So I showed him these two shots,
92
264296
2039
Mostrei a ele estas duas cenas,
04:42
and then he basically told me what he thought.
93
266335
3417
e ele basicamente me disse o que pensava.
04:45
("That's wrong") (Laughter)
94
269752
2537
('Está errado") (Risos)
04:48
Okay. (Laughter)
95
272289
2959
Certo. (Risos)
04:51
It's what you dream about.
96
275248
1924
É o que você sonha.
04:53
(Laughter)
97
277172
3000
(Risos)
04:56
So what I got from him is, he turned to me and said,
98
280172
3507
04:59
"You would never, ever design a rocket like that.
99
283679
3454
"Você nunca projetaria um foguete como este.
05:03
You would never have a rocket go up
100
287133
1249
Seu foguete nunca sairia do chão
05:04
while the gantry arms are going out. Can you imagine
101
288382
2061
05:06
the tragedy that could possibly happen with that?
102
290443
2055
a tragédia que poderia acontecer?
05:08
You would never, ever design a rocket like that."
103
292498
2842
Você nunca projetaria um foguete como este."
05:11
And he was looking at me. It's like, Yeah, I don't know
104
295340
2147
05:13
if you noticed, but I'm the guy out in the parking lot
105
297487
2010
05:15
recreating one of America's finest moments with
106
299497
1928
05:17
fire extinguishers.
107
301425
1659
com extintores de incêndio.
05:18
(Laughter)
108
303084
2359
(Risos)
05:21
And I'm not going to argue with you. You're an astronaut,
109
305443
2928
Não vou discutir com você. Você é um astronauta,
05:24
a hero, and I'm from New Jersey, so --
110
308371
2277
05:26
(Laughter)
111
310648
1699
(Risos)
05:28
I'm just going to show you some footage.
112
312347
2037
05:30
I'm just going to show you some footage, and tell me what you think.
113
314384
2610
05:32
And then I did kind of get the reaction I was hoping for.
114
316994
2423
05:35
So I showed him this, and this is actual footage
115
319417
2039
05:37
that he was on. This is Apollo 15. This was his mission.
116
321456
3545
que ele participou. Esta é a Apolo 15. Era a sua missão.
05:40
So I showed him this, and the reaction I got was interesting.
117
325001
5276
05:46
("That's wrong too.") (Laughter)
118
330277
2784
("Também está errada") (Risos)
05:48
So, and what happened was, I mean, what I sort of intuned
119
333061
3234
05:52
in that is that he remembered it differently.
120
336295
2482
que sua lembrança era diferente.
05:54
He remembered that was a perfectly safe sort of gantry
121
338777
2344
05:57
system, perfectly safe rocket launch, because he's sitting
122
341121
2703
05:59
in a rocket that has, like, a hundred thousand pounds
123
343824
2223
num foguete que tem, aproximadamente, 50.000kg
06:01
of thrust, built by the lowest bidder.
124
346047
2274
de empuxo, criado pelo menor preço.
06:04
He was hoping it was going to work out okay.
125
348321
2255
Ele tinha esperanças que fosse funcionar bem.
06:06
(Laughter) (Applause)
126
350576
2769
(Risos) (Aplausos)
06:09
So he twisted his memory around.
127
353345
2144
Ele divagou.
06:11
Now, Ron Howard ran into Buzz Aldrin, who was not
128
355489
3074
06:14
on the movie, so he had no idea that we were faking
129
358563
2315
06:16
any of this footage, and he just responded
130
360878
2226
todas os trechos, ele só reagiu
06:19
as he would respond, and I'll run this.
131
363104
2830
06:21
Ron Howard: Buzz Aldrin came up to me
132
365934
2434
Ron Howard: Buzz Aldrin, veio até mim
06:24
and said, "Hey, that launch footage, I saw some shots
133
368368
4438
e disse: "Oi, aquele trecho do lançamento, vi algumas tomadas
06:28
I'd never seen before. Did you guys, what vault did you find
134
372806
4998
06:33
that stuff in?" And I said, "Well, no vault, Buzz,
135
377804
2461
estas cenas? E eu disse: Bem, em cofre nenhum, Buzz,
06:36
we generated all that from scratch."
136
380265
3418
nós fizemos isto do zero."
06:39
And he said, "Huh, that's pretty good. Can we use it?"
137
383683
3904
E ele disse: Hum, está muito bom. Podemos usá-lo?
06:43
(Explosion) ("Sure") (Laughter)
138
387587
3456
(Explosão) ("Claro") (Risos)
06:46
RL: I think he's a great American.
139
391043
1927
06:48
(Laughter)
140
392970
3781
(Risos)
06:52
So, "Titanic" was, if you don't know the story,
141
396751
3303
06:55
doesn't end well.
142
400054
1740
ela não termina bem.
06:57
(Laughter)
143
401794
2781
(Risos)
07:00
Jim Cameron actually photographed the real Titanic.
144
404575
3151
Jim Cameron filmou o verdadeiro Titanic.
07:03
So he basically set up, or basically shattered
145
407726
2281
Daí ele basicamente arranjou, ou quebrou
07:05
the suspension of disbelief, because what he photographed
146
410007
2403
07:08
was the real thing, a Mir sub going down, or actually
147
412410
3427
07:11
two Mir subs going down to the real wreck,
148
415837
2343
07:14
and he created this very haunting footage.
149
418180
2037
e ele criou esta tomada inesquecível.
07:16
It's really beautiful, and it conjures up all these
150
420217
2873
É muito bonita, e conjuga todas estas
07:18
various different emotions, but he couldn't photograph
151
423090
2194
diferentes emoções, mas ele não podia filmar
07:21
everything, and to tell the story,
152
425284
2729
tudo, e para contar a história,
07:23
I had to fill in the gaps, which is now rather daunting,
153
428013
1850
07:25
because now I have to recreate back to back
154
429863
2561
07:28
what really happened and I had, I'm the only one
155
432424
3055
o que realmente aconteceu e assim fiz, sou o único
07:31
who could really blow it at that point.
156
435479
4275
que poderia estragar tudo àquela altura.
07:35
So this is the footage he photographed,
157
439754
2040
Aqui está a tomada que ele filmou,
07:37
and it was pretty moving and pretty awe-inspiring.
158
441794
4644
era comovente e muito inspiradora.
07:42
So I'm going to just let it run, so you kind of absorb
159
446438
2497
Deixarei a tomada toda, assim vocês podem absorver
07:44
this sort of thing, and I'll describe my sort of reactions
160
448935
3201
07:48
when I was looking at it for the very first time.
161
452136
2677
quando assisti a tomada pela primeira vez.
07:50
I got the feeling that my brain wanted to basically
162
454813
4566
Tive o sentimento que meu cérebro queria apenas
07:55
see it come back to life.
163
459379
1385
ver isto voltando a ter vida.
07:56
I automatically wanted to see this ship,
164
460764
2721
Automaticamente queria ver este navio,
07:59
this magnificent ship, basically in all its glory,
165
463485
2663
08:02
and conversely, I wanted to see it not in all its glory,
166
466148
3076
08:05
basically go back to what it looks like.
167
469224
2448
voltando à sua aparência atual.
08:07
So I conjured up an effect that I'm later going to show you
168
471672
3460
08:11
what I tried to do, which is kind of the heart of the movie,
169
475132
2405
o que tentei fazer, algo que no fundo é o coração do filme,
08:13
for me, and so that's why I wanted to do the movie,
170
477537
3599
08:17
that's why I wanted to create the sort of things I created.
171
481136
3596
08:20
And I'll show you, you know, another thing that I found
172
484732
1981
E mostrarei outra coisa que achei
08:22
interesting is what we really were emoting to
173
486713
2287
interessante é o que realmente nos emocionava
08:24
when you take a look at it.
174
489000
1418
quando você assiste a isso.
08:26
So here's the behind the scenes, a couple of little shots here.
175
490418
2906
Aqui estão os bastidores, algumas pequenas tomadas.
08:29
So, when you saw my footage,
176
493324
1963
Daí quando virem a minha cena,
08:31
you were seeing this: basically, a bunch of guys
177
495287
2643
verão basicamente isso: um grupo de pessoas
08:33
flipping a ship upside down, and the little Mir subs
178
497930
2997
08:36
are actually about the size of small footballs,
179
500927
2605
08:39
and shot in smoke.
180
503532
2033
e filmei com fumaça.
08:41
Jim went three miles went down, and I went about
181
505565
2210
Jim desceu 4,8km, e eu fui
08:43
three miles away from the studio
182
507775
1598
a 4,8km dos estúdios
08:45
and photographed this in a garage.
183
509373
2600
e fotografei isto em uma garagem.
08:47
And so, but what you're emoting to, or what you're looking
184
511973
2231
08:50
at, had the same feeling, the same haunting quality,
185
514204
3112
08:53
that Jim's footage had, so I found it so fascinating
186
517316
3241
08:56
that our brains sort of, once you believe something's real,
187
520557
4492
09:00
you transfer everything that you feel about it,
188
525049
2807
transferimos tudo que sentimos sobre isso,
09:03
this quality you have, and it's totally artificial.
189
527856
2392
temos essa qualidade, e é totalmente artificial.
09:06
It's totally make-believe, yet it's not to you,
190
530248
3732
É totalmente faz-de-conta, mas não para vocês,
09:09
and I found that that was a very interesting thing
191
533980
2000
e eu achei extremamente interessante
09:11
to explore and use, and it caused me to create the next
192
535980
2795
09:14
effect that I'll show you, which is
193
538775
1795
efeito que mostrarei agora, que é
09:16
this sort of magic transition, and all I was really attempting
194
540570
3215
09:19
to do is basically have the audience cue the effect,
195
543785
3953
foi fazer a platéia sentir o efeito,
09:23
so it became a seamless experience for them,
196
547738
2652
e tornou-se uma experiência diferente para eles,
09:26
that I wasn't showing you my sort of interpretation,
197
550390
2330
09:28
I was showing you what you wanted to see.
198
552720
2921
estava mostrando o que vocês queriam assistir.
09:31
And the very next shot, right after this --
199
555641
6783
E a próxima tomada, logo depois desta --
09:38
So you can see what I was doing.
200
562424
1565
09:39
So basically, if there's two subs in the same shot,
201
563989
1794
09:41
I shot it, because where's the camera coming from?
202
565783
2908
09:44
And when Jim shot it, it was only one sub,
203
568691
1561
09:46
because he was photographing from the other,
204
570252
1271
pois ele estava filmando do outro,
09:47
and I don't remember if I did this or Jim did this.
205
571523
1704
09:49
I'll give it to Jim, because he could use the pat on the back.
206
573227
3370
09:52
(Laughter)
207
576597
6318
(Risos)
09:58
Okay. So now the Titanic transition.
208
582915
2339
Bem. Agora a transição do Titanic.
10:01
So this is what I was referring to where I wanted to basically
209
585254
3151
10:04
magically transplant from one state of the Titanic
210
588405
2917
magicamente transpor de um estado do Titanic
10:07
to the other. So I'll just play the shot once. (Music)
211
591322
3948
para o outro. Vou passar a tomada uma vez. (Música)
10:11
(Music)
212
595270
3440
(Música)
10:14
And what I was hoping for is that it just melts in front of you.
213
598710
5752
10:25
Gloria Stuart: That was the last time Titanic ever saw daylight.
214
609754
4541
10:30
RL: So, what I did is basically I had another
215
614295
2789
RL: Daí, basicamente projetei a cena
10:32
screening room experience where I was basically tracking
216
617084
2838
10:35
where I was looking, or where we were looking,
217
619922
2302
10:38
and of course you're looking at the two people on the bow
218
622224
2418
10:40
of the ship, and then at some point,
219
624642
2193
do navio, e daí em algum momento,
10:42
I'm changing the periphery of the shot,
220
626835
2018
eu estou modificando a periferia da cena,
10:44
I'm changing, it's becoming the rusted wreck,
221
628853
2322
10:47
and then I would run it every day, and then I would find
222
631175
3009
10:50
exactly the moment that I stopped looking at them
223
634184
3067
10:53
and start noticing the rest of it, and the moment
224
637251
2190
e comecei a notar o resto da cena, e o momento
10:55
my eye shifted, we just marked it to the frame.
225
639441
2558
10:57
The moment my eye shifted, I immediately started
226
641999
2376
Quando meus olhos se moveram, imediatamente comecei
11:00
to change them, so now somehow you missed
227
644375
2339
a mudança, de algum modo agora sinto falta
11:02
where it started and where it stopped.
228
646714
2340
do ponto que começou e do ponto que parou.
11:04
And so I'll just show it one more time.
229
649054
2153
Então vou mostrar mais uma vez.
11:07
(Music) And it's literally done by using what our brains
230
651207
3197
11:10
naturally do for us, which is, as soon as you shift
231
654404
3735
11:14
your attention, something changes, and then I left
232
658139
1952
nossa atenção, algo muda, e então eu deixo
11:15
the little scarf going, because it really wanted to be
233
660091
2143
um pequeno prolongamento, pois realmente queria
11:18
a ghostly shot, really wanted to feel like they were still
234
662234
3853
11:21
on the wreck, essentially. That's where they were buried forever.
235
666087
3330
11:25
Or something like that. I just made that up.
236
669417
2009
Ou algo assim. Inventei isso agora.
11:27
(Laughter)
237
671426
2469
(Risos)
11:29
It was, incidentally, the last time I ever saw daylight.
238
673895
1884
11:31
It was a long film to work on. (Laughter)
239
675779
3471
11:35
Now, "Hugo" was another interesting movie, because
240
679250
2282
Agora, "Hugo" foi outro filme interessante, pois
11:37
the movie itself is about film illusions.
241
681532
2110
11:39
It's about how our brain is tricked into seeing a persistence
242
683642
2865
11:42
of vision that creates a motion picture,
243
686507
2818
da visão que cria um movimento,
11:45
and one of the things I had to do is, we —
244
689325
3674
11:48
Sasha Baron Cohen is a very clever, very smart guy,
245
692999
3327
11:52
comedian, wanted to basically do an homage to the kind of
246
696326
2151
11:54
the Buster Keaton sort of slapstick things, and he wanted
247
698477
2228
pastelão de Buster Keaton , e ele queria
11:56
his leg brace to get caught on a moving train.
248
700705
3308
11:59
Very dangerous, very impossible to do, and particularly
249
704013
2121
12:02
on our stage, because there literally is no way to actually
250
706134
3325
12:05
move this train, because it fits so snugly into our set.
251
709459
4864
12:10
So let me show you the scene, and then I basically
252
714323
2463
Deixe-me mostrar a cena, e então eu basicamente
12:12
used the trick that was identified by Sergei Eisenstein,
253
716786
3683
12:16
which is, if you have a camera that's moving with a moving
254
720469
3174
12:19
object, what is not moving appears to be moving,
255
723643
2769
12:22
and what is moving appears to be stopped,
256
726412
2599
12:24
so what you're actually seeing now is the train is not
257
729011
2915
12:27
moving at all, and what is actually moving is the floor.
258
731926
5080
se movendo, o que se move é o chão.
12:32
So this is the shot. That's a little video of
259
737006
3031
Esta é a tomada. Este é um pequeno vídeo do
12:35
what you're looking at there, which is our little test,
260
740037
3282
12:39
so that's actually what you're seeing, and I thought it was
261
743319
2579
12:41
sort of an interesting thing, because it was, part
262
745898
2157
12:43
of the homage of the movie itself is coming up with this
263
748055
3325
da homenagem do próprio filme surge
12:47
sort of genius trick which I can't take credit for.
264
751380
2518
12:49
I'd love to but I can't, because it was invented
265
753898
2665
12:52
like in 1910 or something like that, is I told Marty,
266
756563
4645
12:57
and it's kind of one of those mind things that it's
267
761208
1656
é uma daquelas coisas significativas que
12:58
really hard to really get until you actually see it work,
268
762864
2381
13:01
and I said, you know, what I was going to do, and he said,
269
765245
2880
e eu digo, você sabe, o que eu farei, e ele disse:
13:04
"So, let me see if I can get this straight. The thing with the wheels?
270
768125
2222
"Então, deixe-me ver se entendi. A coisa com rodas?
13:06
That doesn't move."
271
770347
1953
Ela não se move."
13:08
(Laughter) (Applause)
272
772300
3418
(Risos) (Aplausos)
13:11
"And the thing without the wheels, that moves."
273
775718
3976
"E a coisa sem rodas, que se move."
13:15
Precisely. (Laughter)
274
779694
2475
Precisamente. (Risos)
13:18
Brings me to the next, and final --
275
782169
2795
Vamos ao próximo, e último --
13:20
Marty's not going to see this, is he? (Laughter)
276
784964
4069
Marty não vai assistir isto, vai? (Risos)
13:24
This isn't viewed outside of -- (Laughter)
277
789033
3790
Isto não é visto fora do -- (Risos)
13:28
The next illustration is something that, there's like
278
792823
4427
13:33
all one shot theory. It's a very elegant way of telling a story,
279
797250
3062
13:36
especially if you're following somebody on a journey,
280
800312
2057
13:38
and that journey basically tells something about
281
802369
2308
e esta viagem conta algo sobre
13:40
their personality in a very concise way,
282
804677
2241
a personalidade deles de forma bem concisa,
13:42
and what we wanted to do based on the shot in "Goodfellas,"
283
806918
2383
13:45
which is one of the great shots ever,
284
809301
1884
13:47
a Martin Scorsese film, of basically following Henry Hill
285
811185
3377
13:50
through what it feels like to be a gangster walk
286
814562
2136
13:52
going through the Copacabana and being treated in a special way.
287
816698
2563
13:55
He was the master of his universe, and we wanted Hugo
288
819261
3507
13:58
to feel the same way, so we created this shot.
289
822768
2656
14:01
(Music)
290
825424
3317
(Música)
14:04
That's Hugo. (Music)
291
828741
5026
Esse é Hugo. (Música)
14:09
And we felt that if we could basically move the camera
292
833767
3077
14:12
with him, we would feel what it feels like to be this boy
293
836844
2690
14:15
who is basically the master of his universe,
294
839534
2791
14:18
and his universe is, you know, behind the scenes
295
842325
2459
14:20
in the bowels of this particular train station
296
844784
2641
no interior desta estação de trem
14:23
that only he can actually navigate through
297
847425
2304
onde apenas ele consegue passear
14:25
and do it this way, and we had to make it feel that
298
849729
2299
14:27
this is his normal, everyday sort of life,
299
852028
2307
14:30
so the idea of doing it as one shot was very important,
300
854335
2566
14:32
and of course, in shooting in 3D, which is basically
301
856901
2616
e claro, filmado em 3D, que é basicamente
14:35
it's a huge camera that's hanging off of a giant stick,
302
859517
4011
14:39
so to recreate a steadycam shot was the task,
303
863528
3522
14:42
and make it feel kind of like what the reaction you got
304
867050
3266
14:46
when you saw the "Goodfellas" shot.
305
870316
1562
14:47
So what you're now going to see is how we actually did it.
306
871878
3801
14:51
It's actually five separate sets shot at five different times
307
875679
3185
14:54
with two different boys.
308
878864
1187
com dois garotos.
14:55
The one on the left is where the shot ends,
309
880051
2162
O da esquerda é onde a tomada termina,
14:58
and the shot on the right is where it takes over,
310
882213
5426
e a tomada à direita é onde continua,
15:03
and now we switch boys, so it went from Asa Butterfield,
311
887639
3505
e agora trocamos o garoto, e passou de Asa Butterfield,
15:07
who's the star of the show, to his stand-in. (Music)
312
891144
3874
15:10
I wouldn't say his stunt double. There's a crazy rig
313
895018
1849
Não diria que ele é um dublê. Há um equipamento louco
15:12
that we built for this. (Music)
314
896867
2464
que construímos para isso. (Música)
15:15
And so this is, and now this is set number three
315
899331
3551
Ai está, e agora entramos no cenário número três,
15:18
we're into, and then we're going to go into, basically
316
902882
4380
e a seguir nós entramos, basicamente
15:23
the very last moment of the shot is actually
317
907262
2664
no último minuto da tomada é realmente
15:25
the steadycam shot. Everything else was shot on cranes
318
909926
2282
a tomada com a câmara parada. Tudo foi filmado com grua
15:28
and various things like that, and it literally was done
319
912208
2045
15:30
over five different sets, two different boys, different times,
320
914253
3297
15:33
and it all had to feel like it was all one shot, and what was
321
917550
2830
15:36
sort of great for me was it was probably
322
920380
4695
15:40
the best-reviewed shot I've ever worked on,
323
925075
2517
a melhor tomada que trabalhei
15:43
and, you know, I was kind of proud of it when I was done,
324
927592
2588
e vocês sabem, estava orgulhoso ao terminar
15:46
which is, you should never really be proud of stuff, I guess.
325
930180
4898
15:50
So I was kind of proud of it, and I went to a friend of mine,
326
935078
2810
15:53
and said, "You know, this is, you know, kind of
327
937888
1924
15:55
the best-reviewed shot I've ever worked on.
328
939812
1872
a tomada que recebeu as melhores críticas.
15:57
What do you think was the reason?"
329
941684
2911
Qual você acha que foi o motivo?"
16:00
And he said, "Because no one knows
330
944595
1410
e ele falou: Porque ninguém sabe
16:01
you had anything to do with it."
331
946005
1966
16:03
(Laughter)
332
947971
2806
(Risos)
16:06
So, all I can say is, thank you,
333
950777
3914
Então, tudo que posso dizer é, obrigado,
16:10
and that's my presentation for you. (Applause)
334
954691
5200
essa foi minha apresentação para vocês. (Aplausos)
16:15
(Applause)
335
959891
5344
(Aplausos)
