ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Matt Killingsworth - Happiness researcher
Researcher Matt Killingsworth designs studies that gather data on happiness. One takeaway? "A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind."

Why you should listen

While doing his PhD research with Dan Gilbert at Harvard, Matt Killingsworth invented a nifty tool for investigating happiness: an iPhone app called Track Your Happiness that captured feelings in real time. (Basically, it pings you at random times and asks: How are you feeling right now, and what are you doing?) Data captured from the study became the landmark paper "A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind" (PDF).

As an undergrad, Killingsworth studied economics and engineering, and worked for a few years as a software product manager -- an experience during which, he says, "I began to question my assumptions about what defined success for an individual, an organization, or a society." He's now a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar examining such topics as "the relationship between happiness and the content of everyday experiences, the percentage of everyday experiences that are intrinsically valuable, and the degree of congruence between the causes of momentary happiness and of one’s overall satisfaction with life."

Matt Killingsworth: Want to be happier? Stay in the moment

Bem, as pessoas querem
um monte de coisas na vida,

elas querem felicidade.

The paradox of happiness is that even though the

O paradoxo da felicidade é que apesar de
01:01
objective conditions of our lives have improved dramatically,
16
45285

as condições objetivas de nossas vidas
terem melhorado muito,
01:04
we haven't actually gotten any happier.

nós não nos tornamos mais felizes.

Maybe because these conventional notions of progress

Talvez porque essa noção
convencional de progresso
01:10
haven't delivered big benefits in terms of happiness,
19
54670
2476
não trouxe grandes benefícios
em termos de felicidade,
01:13
there's been an increased interest in recent years
20
57146
2130
ultimamente tem havido
um interesse crescente
01:15
in happiness itself.
21
59276
2522
na felicidade em si.
01:17
People have been debating the causes of happiness
22
61798
2035
As pessoas têm debatido
o significado de felicidade
01:19
for a really long time, in fact for thousands of years,
23
63833
2599
há muito tempo, na verdade há milhares de anos,
01:22
but it seems like many of those debates remain unresolved.
24
66432
3457
mas aparentemente muitos desses debates
permaneceram sem solução.
01:25
Well, as with many other domains in life, I think
25
69889
2059
Bem, como em muitos outros
campos da vida, eu acho
01:27
the scientific method has the potential to answer this question.
26
71948
3212
que o método científico tem
o poder de responder a essa questão.
01:31
In fact, in the last few years, there's been an explosion
27
75160
2534
De fato, nestes últimos anos,
houve uma explosão
01:33
in research on happiness. For example, we've learned a lot
28
77694
2801
de pesquisas sobre felicidade.
Por exemplo, aprendemos bastante
01:36
about its demographics, how things like income
29
80495
3112
sobre sua demografia, sobre como renda
01:39
and education, gender and marriage relate to it.
30
83607
3426
e educação, gênero e matrimônio
se relacionam com ela.
01:42
But one of the puzzles this has revealed is that
31
87033
2222
Mas uma das questões
que isto revelou foi que
01:45
factors like these don't seem to have a particularly strong effect.
32
89255
2939
fatores como estes parecem não ter
uma grande influência.
01:48
Yes, it's better to make more money rather than less,
33
92194
2437
Sim, é melhor ganhar
mais dinheiro do que menos,
01:50
or to graduate from college instead of dropping out,
34
94631
2712
ou se formar na universidade
em vez de desistir,
01:53
but the differences in happiness tend to be small.
35
97343
2761
mas a diferença na felicidade
tende a ser pequena.
01:56
Which leaves the question, what are the big causes of happiness?
36
100104
3835
O que nos deixa a pergunta:
quais são as principais causas da felicidade?
01:59
I think that's a question we haven't really answered yet,
37
103939
2697
Eu acho que ainda não respondemos
a essa questão,
02:02
but I think something that has the potential to be an answer
38
106636
2712
mas acho que algo com o potencial
de ser uma resposta
02:05
is that maybe happiness has an awful lot to do with
39
109348
2721
é que talvez felicidade tem muito a ver com
02:07
the contents of our moment-to-moment experiences.
40
112069
2444
o conteúdo de nossas experiências
a cada momento.
02:10
It certainly seems that we're going about our lives,
41
114513
1995
Certamente parece que
como conduzimos nossa vida,
02:12
that what we're doing, who we're with, what we're thinking about,
42
116508
3935
o que fazemos, com quem estamos,
sobre o que pensamos,
02:16
have a big influence on our happiness, and yet
43
120443
2352
tem uma grande influência
em nossa felicidade, e mesmo assim
02:18
these are the very factors that have been very difficult,
44
122795
2233
estes são exatamente
os fatores mais difíceis,
02:20
in fact almost impossible, for scientists to study.
45
125028
2387
na verdade quase impossíveis,
para os cientistas estudarem.
02:23
A few years ago, I came up with a way to study people's happiness
46
127415
3061
Há alguns anos, eu criei um
jeito de estudar a felicidade a cada momento
02:26
moment to moment as they're going about their daily lives
47
130476
2579
das pessoas no decorrer de seu dia-a-dia
02:28
on a massive scale all over the world, something we'd never
48
133055
2742
numa grande escala ao redor do mundo,
algo que nunca fomos
02:31
been able to do before. Called trackyourhappiness.org,
49
135797
2791
capazes de fazer até então.
Chamado trackyourhappiness.org,
02:34
it uses the iPhone to monitor people's happiness in real time.
50
138588
4286
ele usa o iPhone para monitorar
a felicidade das pessoas em tempo real.
02:38
How does this work? Basically, I send people signals
51
142874
2789
Como isso funciona? Basicamente,
eu mando sinais para as pessoas
02:41
at random points throughout the day, and then I ask them
52
145663
2440
aleatoriamente durante o dia, e as faço
02:44
a bunch of questions about their moment-to-moment experience
53
148103
2288
um monte de perguntas sobre
sua experiência de momento
02:46
at the instant just before the signal.
54
150391
2534
no instante logo antes do sinal.
02:48
The idea is that, if we can watch how people's happiness
55
152925
2807
A ideia é que, se pudermos observar
como a felicidade das pessoas
02:51
goes up and down over the course of the day,
56
155732
2624
varia durante o dia,
02:54
minute to minute in some cases,
57
158356
1728
minuto a minuto em alguns casos,
02:55
and try to understand how what people are doing,
58
160084
2142
e tentarmos entender
o que as pessoas estão fazendo,
02:58
who they're with, what they're thinking about, and all
59
162226
2843
com quem elas estão,
sobre o que estão pensando, e todos
03:00
the other factors that describe our day, how those might
60
165069
2176
os outros fatores que descrevem
nosso dia, como eles podem
03:03
relate to those changes in happiness, we might be able
61
167245
2711
se relacionar com as mudanças
na felicidade, talvez possamos
03:05
to discover some of the things that really have
62
169956
1546
descobrir algumas das coisas
que realmente têm
03:07
a big influence on happiness.
63
171502
2305
uma grande influência na felicidade.
03:09
We've been fortunate with this project to collect
64
173807
2306
Nós tivemos sorte
com este projeto em coletar
03:12
quite a lot of data, a lot more data of this kind than I think
65
176113
2858
muitos dados, muito mais deste tipo
do que eu acho
03:14
has ever been collected before,
66
178971
1859
que já foi coletado antes,
03:16
over 650,000 real-time reports
67
180830
3221
mais de 650 mil relatos em tempo real
03:19
from over 15,000 people.
68
184051
2879
de mais de 15 mil pessoas.
03:22
And it's not just a lot of people, it's a really diverse group,
69
186930
3109
E não é somente um monte de pessoas,
é realmente um grupo variado,
03:25
people from a wide range of ages, from 18 to late 80s,
70
190039
3487
pessoas de várias idades,
de 18 a mais de 80,
03:29
a wide range of incomes, education levels,
71
193526
2928
vários níveis de renda, de educação,
03:32
people who are married, divorced, widowed, etc.
72
196454
3063
pessoas casadas, divorciadas, viúvas, etc.
03:35
They collectively represent every one of
73

Coletivamente elas representam cada uma das
03:37
86 occupational categories and hail from over 80 countries.
74

86 categorias profissionais e
de mais de 80 países.
03:42
What I'd like to do with the rest of my time with you today
75
206642
2902
O que eu gostaria de fazer com
o resto do meu tempo com vocês hoje
03:45
is talk a little bit about one of the areas that we've been
76
209544
2129
é falar um pouco sobre
uma das áreas que estamos
03:47
investigating, and that's mind-wandering.
77
211673
3183
investigando: divagação mental.
03:50
As human beings, we have this unique ability
78
214856
2400
Como seres humanos, nós temos
esta habilidade única
03:53
to have our minds stray away from the present.
79
217256
2935
de fazer com que nossas mentes
percam-se do presente.
03:56
This guy is sitting here working on his computer,
80
220191
1925
Este cara aqui está sentado trabalhando
em seu computador,
03:58
and yet he could be thinking about
81
222116
1054
mas poderia estar pensando
03:59
the vacation he had last month,
82
223170
2689
nas férias que teve no mês passado,
04:01
wondering what he's going to have for dinner.
83
225859
1963
se perguntando o que ele vai comer na janta.
04:03
Maybe he's worried that he's going bald. (Laughter)
84
227822
3833
Talvez esteja preocupado
que está ficando careca. (Risos)
04:07
This ability to focus our attention on something other
85
231655
2785
Esta habilidade de focar
nossa atenção em algo diferente
04:10
than the present is really amazing. It allows us to learn
86
234440
3255
do presente é algo realmente incrível.
Nos permite aprender
04:13
and plan and reason in ways that no other species of animal can.
87
237695
4494
e planejar e raciocinar de maneiras
que nenhuma outra espécie animal pode.
04:18
And yet it's not clear what the relationship is
88
242189
2398
Contudo, não é claro qual é a relação
04:20
between our use of this ability and our happiness.
89
244587
3916
entre o uso desta habilidade
e nossa felicidade.
04:24
You've probably heard people suggest that you should
90
248503
1858
Vocês provavelmente já escutaram
sugestões que vocês deveriam
04:26
stay focused on the present. "Be here now,"
91
250361
2491
estar no presente. "Esteja aqui agora,"
04:28
you've probably heard a hundred times.
92
252852
1485
você provavelmente já escutou
milhares de vezes.
04:30
Maybe, to really be happy, we need to stay completely
93
254337
2681
Talvez, para ser realmente feliz,
precisamos nos manter completamente
04:32
immersed and focused on our experience in the moment.
94
257018
3511
imersos e focados em
nossas experiências do momento.
04:36
Maybe these people are right. Maybe mind-wandering
95
260529
1834
Talvez estas pessoas estejam certas.
Talvez divagação mental
04:38
is a bad thing.
96
262363
1730
seja ruim.
04:39
On the other hand, when our minds wander,
97
264093
2419
Por outro lado, quando nossa mente divaga,
04:42
they're unconstrained. We can't change the physical reality
98
266512
2661
ela está ilimitada.
Não podemos mudar a realidade física
04:45
in front of us, but we can go anywhere in our minds.
99
269173
3388
â nossa frente, mas podemos
ir a qualquer lugar em nossa mente.
04:48
Since we know people want to be happy, maybe
100
272561
1813
Já que sabemos que as pessoas
querem ser felizes, talvez
04:50
when our minds wander, they're going to someplace happier than the place
101
274374
2691
quando nossa mente divaga,
ela está indo a um lugar mais feliz que aquele
04:52
that they're leaving. It would make a lot of sense.
102
277065
2233
que está deixando. Faria muito sentido.
04:55
In other words, maybe the pleasures of the mind
103
279298
1498
Em outras palavras, talvez os prazeres da mente
04:56
allow us to increase our happiness with mind-wandering.
104
280796
4426
nos permitam aumentar nossa felicidade
com a divagação mental.
05:01
Well, since I'm a scientist, I'd like to try to
105
285222
2011
Bem, já que sou um cientista,
gostaria de tentar
05:03
resolve this debate with some data, and in particular
106
287233
2677
resolver esse debate com alguns dados,
e particularmente
05:05
I'd like to present some data to you from three questions
107
289910
2488
gostaria de apresentar a vocês
dados de três questões
05:08
that I ask with Track Your Happiness. Remember, this is from
108
292398
2210
que eu faço com o Track Your Happiness.
Lembrem-se, isto vem de
05:10
sort of moment-to-moment experience in people's real lives.
109
294608
2652
experiências de momentos
da vida real das pessoas.
05:13
There are three questions. The first one is a happiness question:
110
297260
3030
Há três questões.
A primeira é sobre felicidade:
05:16
How do you feel, on a scale ranging from very bad
111
300290
2875
Como você se sente,
numa escala que vai de "muito mal"
05:19
to very good? Second, an activity question:
112
303165
4139
a "muito bem"? Segunda,
uma questão sobre atividade:
05:23
What are you doing, on a list of 22 different activities
113
307304
2528
O que você está fazendo,
numa lista de 22 atividades diferentes
05:25
including things like eating and working and watching TV?
114
309832
3225
incluindo coisas como comendo,
trabalhando e assistindo TV?
05:28
And finally a mind-wandering question:
115
313057
3588
E finalmente uma questão sobre
divagação mental:
05:32
Are you thinking about something other
116
316645
2642
Você está pensando em algo diferente
05:35
than what you're currently doing?
117
319287
2623
do que está fazendo?
05:37
People could say no -- in other words, I'm focused only on my task --
118
321910
3442
As pessoas podiam dizer não --em outras
palavras, estou focado só na minha tarefa
05:41
or yes -- I am thinking about something else --
119
325352
2529
ou sim — estou pensando em algo diferente —
05:43
and the topic of those thoughts are pleasant,
120
327881
2456
e o tema desses pensamentos é agradável,
05:46
neutral or unpleasant.
121
330337
1426
neutro ou desagradável.
05:47
Any of those yes responses are what we called mind-wandering.
122
331763
5459
Qualquer uma destas respostas positivas
são chamadas de divagação mental.
05:53
So what did we find?
123
337222
2465
Então o que descobrimos?
05:55
This graph shows happiness on the vertical axis,
124
339687
2299
Esse gráfico mostra felicidade no eixo vertical,
05:57
and you can see that bar there representing how happy
125
341986
2240
e vocês podem ver que a barra
que representa quão felizes
06:00
people are when they're focused on the present,
126
344226
1333
as pessoas estão quando
focadas no presente,
06:01
when they're not mind-wandering.
127
345559
1923
quando não estão divagando.
06:03
As it turns out, people are substantially less happy
128
347482
3719
Acontece que as pessoas
são consideravelmente menos felizes
06:07
when their minds are wandering than when they're not.
129
351201
4736
quando estão divagando do que quando não.
06:11
Now you might look at this result and say, okay, sure,
130
355937
2602
Bem, você pode olhar para
este resultado e dizer, ok, certo,
06:14
on average people are less happy when they're mind-wandering,
131
358539
2422
na média as pessoas são menos felizes
quando estão divagando,
06:16
but surely when their minds are straying away
132
360961
1668
mas com certeza quando
sua mente está longe
06:18
from something that wasn't very enjoyable to begin with,
133
362629
2119
de algo que não era muito agradável
para começo de conversa,
06:20
at least then mind-wandering should be doing something good for us.
134
364748
3764
pelo menos divagação mental deve
estar fazendo algo bom para nós.
06:24
Nope. As it turns out,
135
368512
2699
Não. Como se vê,
06:27
people are less happy when they're mind-wandering
136
371211
1692
as pessoas são menos felizes
quando estão divagando
06:28
no matter what they're doing. For example,
137
372903
3026
independente do que estejam fazendo.
Por exemplo,
06:31
people don't really like commuting to work very much.
138
375929
2177
As pessoas não gostam muito de
se deslocar ao trabalho.
06:34
It's one of their least enjoyable activities, and yet
139
378106
2760
É uma das atividades
mais desagradáveis, e mesmo assim
06:36
they are substantially happier when they're focused
140
380866
2534
elas estão consideravelmente mais felizes
quando estão focadas
06:39
only on their commute than when their mind is going
141
383400
2362
somente no deslocamente do que
quando sua mente está
06:41
off to something else.
142
385762
3047
longe em outro lugar.
06:44
It's amazing.
143
388809
1782
É incrível.
06:46
So how could this be happening? I think part of the reason,
144
390591
3845
Então, como isto pode estar acontecendo?
Acho que parte da explicação,
06:50
a big part of the reason, is that when our minds wander,
145
394436
2398
grande parte da explicação, é que
quando nossas mentes divagam,
06:52
we often think about unpleasant things, and they are
146
396834
2856
frequentemente pensamos sobre
coisas desagradáveis, e elas ficam
06:55
enormously less happy when they do that,
147
399690
3607
extremamente menos felizes quando fazem isso,
06:59
our worries, our anxieties, our regrets,
148
403297
2665
Nossas preocupações, nossas aflições,
nossos remorsos,
07:01
and yet even when people are thinking about something
149
405962
2960
e ainda assim, mesmo quando as pessoas
estão pensando em algo
07:04
neutral, they're still considerably less happy
150
408922
2864
neutro, ainda estão
consideravelmente menos felizes
07:07
than when they're not mind-wandering at all.
151
411786
1977
do que quando não estão divagando.
07:09
Even when they're thinking about something they would describe as pleasant,
152
413763
2835
Mesmo quando estão pensando
em algo que elas descreveriam como agradável.
07:12
they're actually just slightly less happy
153
416598
2204
Elas estão na verdade levemente menos felizes
07:14
than when they aren't mind-wandering.
154
418802
3257
do que quando não estão divagando.
07:17
If mind-wandering were a slot machine, it would be like
155
422059
2062
Se divagação mental fosse
um caça-níqueis, seria como
07:20
having the chance to lose 50 dollars, 20 dollars
156
424121
3033
ter a chance de perder
50 dólares, 20 dólares
07:23
or one dollar. Right? You'd never want to play. (Laughter)
157
427154
6151
ou um dólar. Certo?
Você nunca iria querer jogar. (Risos)
07:29
So I've been talking about this, suggesting, perhaps,
158
433305
2673
Bem, eu falei sobre isto, sugeri, talvez
07:31
that mind-wandering causes unhappiness, but all
159
435978
2812
que divagação mental
causa infelicidade, mas tudo
07:34
I've really shown you is that these two things are correlated.
160
438790
2767
que eu realmente mostrei é que
estas duas coisas estão correlacionadas.
07:37
It's possible that's the case, but it might also be the case
161
441557
2785
É possível que esse seja o caso,
mas também pode ser o caso
07:40
that when people are unhappy, then they mind-wander.
162
444342
2454
de que quando as pessoas estão infelizes
elas divagam mentalmente.
07:42
Maybe that's what's really going on. How could we ever
163
446796
2369
Talvez seja isso que está realmente
acontecendo. Como poderíamos
07:45
disentangle these two possibilites?
164
449165
3089
diferenciar estas duas possibilidades?
07:48
Well, one fact that we can take advantage of, I think a fact
165
452254
2344
Bem, um fato do qual poderíamos
tirar vantagem, um fato com o qual acredito
07:50
you'll all agree is true, is that time goes forward, not
166
454598
2957
vocês todos vão concordar,
é que o tempo passa para frente
07:53
backward. Right? The cause has to come before the effect.
167
457555
3997
não para trás, certo?
A causa tem de vir antes do efeito.
07:57
We're lucky in this data we have many responses from each person,
168
461552
3430
Nós tivemos sorte de ter nestes dados
várias respostas de cada pessoa,
08:00
and so we can look and see, does mind-wandering
169
464982
3196
então podemos olhar e comparar,
se a divagação mental
08:04
tend to precede unhappiness, or does unhappiness
170
468178
2493
tende a preceder
a infelicidade, ou infelicidade
08:06
tend to precede mind-wandering, to get some insight
171
470671
2183
tende a preceder a divagação mental,
para ter alguma ideia
08:08
into the causal direction.
172
472854
2161
da direção de causa.
08:10
As it turns out, there is a strong relationship between
173
475015
3209
Como se vê, há uma forte relação entre
08:14
mind-wandering now and being unhappy a short time later,
174
478224
3685
divagar agora e estar infeliz
um pouco mais tarde,
08:17
consistent with the idea that mind-wandering is causing people to be unhappy.
175
481909
3719
consistente com a ideia de que divagação
é que causa a infelicidade nas pessoas.
08:21
In contrast, there's no relationship between being unhappy
176
485628
3160
Por outro lado, não há
qualquer relação entre estar infeliz
08:24
now and mind-wandering a short time later.
177
488788
3009
agora e divagar um pouco mais tarde.
08:27
In other words, mind-wandering very likely seems to be
178
491797
2322
Em outras palavras, divagação mental
muito provavelmente parece ser
08:30
an actual cause, and not merely a consequence, of unhappiness.
179
494119
5840
a verdadeira causa, e não somente
uma consequência da infelicidade.
Há alguns minutos,
eu comparei divagação mental
08:35
A few minutes ago, I likened mind-wandering
180
499959
2224
08:38
to a slot machine you'd never want to play.
181
502183
2263
com um caça-níqueis
que vocês nunca iriam querer jogar.
08:40
Well, how often do people's minds wander?
182
504446
2304
Bem, com que frequência a mente
das pessoas divaga?
08:42
Turns out, they wander a lot. In fact, really a lot.
183
506750
4457
Pelo jeito, ela divaga muito.
De fato, muito mesmo.
08:47
Forty-seven percent of the time, people are thinking
184
511207
2694
47% do tempo, as pessoas estão pensando
08:49
about something other than what they're currently doing.
185
513901
3407
em algo diferente do que
o que estão fazendo.
08:53
How does that depend on what people are doing?
186
517308
2438
Como isso depende do que
as pessoas estão fazendo?
08:55
This shows the rate of mind-wandering across 22 activities
187
519746
2753
Isso mostra a relação de
divagação mental nas 22 atividades
08:58
ranging from a high of 65 percent — (Laughter) —
188
522499
3999
variando de um máximo de 65% — (Risos) —
09:02
when people are taking a shower, brushing their teeth,
189
526498
2512
quando as pessoas estão tomando banho,
escovando os dentes,
09:04
to 50 percent when they're working,
190
529010
2901
a 50% quando estão trabalhando.
09:07
to 40 percent when they're exercising,
191
531911
3043
a 40% quando estão se exercitando,
09:10
all the way down to this one short bar on the right
192
534954
1919
até o mínimo nesta
pequena barra à direita
09:12
that I think some of you are probably laughing at.
193
536873
1988
de que penso que alguns que
vocês estão provavelmente rindo.
09:14
Ten percent of the time people's minds are wandering
194
538861
2390
10% do tempo que a mente
das pessoas está divagando
09:17
when they're having sex. (Laughter)
195
541251
4571
é quando estão fazendo sexo. (Risos)
Mas há uma coisa que penso ser
bastante interessante neste gráfico,
09:21
But there's something I think that's quite interesting in this graph,
196
545822
2933
09:24
and that is, basically with one exception,
197
548755
3048
e é, basicamente com uma exceção,
09:27
no matter what people are doing, they're mind-wandering
198
551803
2178
não importa o que as pessoas estejam fazendo,
elas estão divagando
09:29
at least 30 percent of the time, which suggests, I think,
199
553981
3678
pelo menos 30% do tempo,
o que sugere, acho,
09:33
that mind-wandering isn't just frequent, it's ubiquitous.
200
557659
2831
que divagação mental não é
somente frequente, é sempre presente
09:36
It pervades basically everything that we do.
201
560490
3733
Está presente basicamente
em tudo que fazemos.
09:40
In my talk today, I've told you a little bit about mind-wandering,

Na minha palestra hoje,
falei um pouco sobre divagação mental,
09:43
a variable that I think turns out to be fairly important
203
567419
2050
uma variável que eu penso ser
razoavelmente importante
09:45
in the equation for happiness.

na equação da felicidade.
09:47
My hope is that over time, by tracking people's

Minha esperança é que com o tempo,
rastreando a felicidade
09:49
moment-to-moment happiness and their experiences
206
573140
3048
a cada momento das pessoas
e suas experiências
09:52
in daily life, we'll be able to uncover a lot of important causes of happiness,
207
576188
3402
no dia a dia, seremos capazes de revelar
várias causas importantes da felicidade,
09:55
and then in the end, a scientific understanding of happiness

579590

e afinal, um entendimento
científico da felicidade

will help us create a future that's not only richer
