ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Bono - Musician, activist
Bono, the lead singer of U2, uses his celebrity to fight for social justice worldwide: to end hunger, poverty and disease, especially in Africa. His nonprofit ONE raises awareness via media, policy and calls to action.

Why you should listen

Irreverent, funny, iconoclastic and relentless, Bono has proven himself stunningly effective in encouraging and cajoling the world's most powerful leaders to take seriously the challenge of disease and hunger and seize the historic opportunity we now have to beat extreme poverty, especially in Africa, through technological innovation, smart aid, transparency and investments which put citizens in charge.

As lead singer of U2, Bono performed at Live Aid in 1985, which inspired him to travel to Ethiopia with his wife, Ali. There they spent several weeks helping with a famine relief project. The experience shocked him and ignited a determination to work for change. In Bono's own words, "What are the blind spots of our age? It might be something as simple as our deep-down refusal to believe that every human life has equal worth". In 2005, the year of Make Poverty History, Bono became one of the inaugural winners of the TED Prize; he used his wish to raise awareness and inspire activism.

In 2002, he co-founded DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), which later became the advocacy and campaign organization, ONE. Today ONE has more than 3 million members who pressure politicians around the world to improve policies to empower the poorest. Thanks to these efforts, along with those of partners and grassroots leaders in Africa, these policies have delivered results. For example, eight million people are now on life preserving antiretoviral medications, malarial death rates have been halved in eight target countries, 50 million more children are in school and 5.4 million lives have been saved through vaccines.

In 2006, Bono and Bobby Shriver launched (RED) to engage the private sector in the fight against AIDS in Africa. (RED) Partners direct a portion of their profits from (RED)-branded products, services and events directly to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In just six years, (RED) has contributed more than $200 million - every penny of which goes directly to HIV/AIDS programs with the goal of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV. To date, (RED) dollars have helped the lives of more than 14 million people in Africa through education, testing, counseling, and treatment programs.

Bono also co-founded EDUN with his wife Ali. EDUN is a global fashion brand which does business in an number of countries in Africa and beyond, sourcing materials and manufacturing clothing. In Uganda, EDUN is supporting over 8,000 farmers in their move from subsistence to sustainable business practices.

Granted knighthood in 2007 and dubbed a "Man of Peace" in 2008, Bono mobilized in 2010 following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, performing the song "Stranded" with bandmate The Edge -- and Rihanna and Jay-z -- during the for Hope for Haiti Now telethon. The event was watched by 83 million people in the United States alone and raised a reported $58 million for relief.

Bono’s journey in activism spans a generation and where he is coming from, and above all where he is going, is something we should all pay close attention to.

03:51
Since the year 2000, since the turn of the millennium,

Desde o ano 2000, a virada do milênio,

04:09
it's down by 2.65 million a year.
70
233238
3420
baixou para 2.65 milhões ao ano.
04:12
That's a rate of 7,256 children's lives saved each day.
71
236658
6613
04:19
Wow. Wow. (Applause)
72
243271
5250
Uau. Uau. (Aplausos)
04:24
Let's just stop for a second, actually, and think about that.
73

04:26
Have you read anything anywhere in the last week

Já leram alguma coisa esta semana
04:30
that is remotely as important as that number? Wow.
75
254639
4320
Uau.
04:34
Great news. It drives me nuts
76
258959
3988
Grande notícia. Acho uma loucura
04:38
that most people don't seem to know this news.
77
262947

04:41

Estes são Michael e Benedicta,
04:47
and they're alive thanks in large part
80
271372

e eles estão vivos graças, principalmente,
04:49
to Dr. Patricia Asamoah -- she's amazing --
81

à Dra Patricia Asamoah -- ela é fantástica --
04:53

04:56
whether you know it or not.
83

04:58
And the Global Fund provides antiretroviral drugs
84
282430
2918
E o Global Fund fornece drogas antiretrovirais
05:01
that stop mothers from passing HIV to their kids.
85
285348
3638
05:04
This fantastic news didn't happen by itself.
86
288986
3175
05:08
It was fought for, it was campaigned for,
87
292161
1875
Ela foi batalhada, houve uma campanha,
05:09
it was innovated for.
88
294036
1671
houve inovação.
05:11
And this great news gives birth to even more great news,
89
295707
5229
E esta grande notícia gera notícias ainda maiores,
05:16
because the historic trend is this.
90
300936
2880
pois a tendência histórica é esta.
05:19
The number of people living in back-breaking,
91
303816
2608
O número de pessoas vivendo nessa extrema
05:22
soul-crushing extreme poverty has declined
92
306424
2587
e devastadora pobreza declinou
05:24
from 43 percent of the world's population in 1990
93
309011
5090
de 43 por cento da população mundial em 1990
05:30
to 33 percent by 2000
94
314101
2904
a 33 por cento em 2000
05:32
and then to 21 percent by 2010.
95
317005
4771
e a 21 por cento em 2010.
05:37
Give it up for that. (Applause)
96
321776
4263
(Aplausos)
05:41
Halved. Halved.
97
326039
3138
Metade. Metade.
05:45
Now, the rate is still too high -- still too many people
98
329177
4300
Bem, o índice ainda é altíssimo -- gente demais
05:49
unnecessarily losing their lives.
99
333477
1978
morrendo inutilmente.
05:51
There's still work to do.
100
335455
1121
Ainda há trabalho pela frente.
05:52
But it's heart-stopping. It's mind-blowing stuff.
101
336576
5652
Mas é surpreendente. É fascinante.
05:58
And if you live on less than $1.25 a day,
102
342228
4480
06:02
if you live in that kind of poverty,
103
346708
2148
se você vive nesse tipo de pobreza,
06:04
this is not just data.
104
348856
1902
isto não são só dados.
06:06
This is everything.
105
350758
1879
Isto é tudo.
06:08
If you're a parent who wants the best for your kids -- and I am --
106
352637
5799
Se você é um pai que quer o melhor para os filhos -- e eu sou --
06:14
this rapid transition is a route out of despair and into hope.
107
358436
5330
06:19
And guess what? If the trajectory continues,
108
363766
2869
E adivinhem? Se a trajetória continua,
06:22
look where the amount of people living on $1.25 a day
109
366635
4537
06:27
gets to by 2030.
110
371172
3632
chega em 2030.
06:30
Can't be true, can it?
111
374804
3312
Não pode ser verdade, pode?
06:34
That's what the data is telling us. If the trajectory continues,
112
378116
4388
É o que os dados nos dizem. Se a trajetória continua,
06:38
we get to, wow, the zero zone.
113
382504
5141
nós vamos a, uau, zona zero.
06:43
For number-crunchers like us,
114
387645
1475
Para fãs de números como nós,
06:45
that is the erogenous zone,
115
389120
3509
essa é a zona erógena,
06:48
and it's fair to say that I am, by now,
116
392629
3191
e é justo dizer que eu estou, agora,
06:51
sexually aroused by the collating of data.
117
395820
5049
sexualmente excitado pelo resultado dos dados.
06:56
So virtual elimination of extreme poverty,
118
400869
5261
Então a eliminação da extrema pobreza,
07:02
as defined by people living on less than $1.25 a day,
119
406130
3600
07:05
adjusted, of course, for inflation from a 1990 baseline.
120
409730
4397
07:10
We do love a good baseline.
121
414127
3017
Adoramos uma boa base de dados.
07:13
That's amazing.
122
417144
1721
É incrível.
07:14
Now I know that some of you think this progress
123
418865
3900
07:18
is all in Asia or Latin America or
124
422765
2691
está todo na Ásia, América Latina ou
07:21
model countries like Brazil --
125
425456
1332
países modelos como o Brasil --
07:22
and who doesn't love a Brazilian model? --
126
426788
2892
07:25
but look at sub-Saharan Africa.
127
429680
4110
mas veja a África Sub-Saariana.
07:29
There's a collection of 10 countries, some call them the lions,
128
433790
3675
07:33
who in the last decade have had a combination
129
437465
2728
07:36
of 100 percent debt cancellation,
130
440193
1544
de 100 por cento de cancelamento de dívida,
07:37

07:48
cut childhood mortality by a third,
135
452519
2270
reduz mortalidade infantil em um terço,
07:50
doubled education completion rates,
136
454789
1707
dobra taxas de conclusão de educação,
07:52
and they, too, halved extreme poverty,
137
456496
3104
e elas, também reduzem à metade a extrema pobreza,
07:55
and at this rate, these 10 get to zero too.
138
459600
4429
e neste ritmo, estes 10 chegam a 0 também.
07:59
So the pride of lions
139
464029
2253
Então o orgulho dos leões
08:02
is the proof of concept.
140
466282
2716
é a prova do conceito.
08:04
There are all kinds of benefits to this.
141
468998
3431
08:08
For a start, you won't have to listen
142
472429
3188
Para começar, você não terá que ouvir
08:11
to an insufferable little jumped-up Jesus like myself.
143
475617
4352
um insuportável pequeno Jesus saltitante como eu.
08:15
How about that? (Applause)
144
479969
5208
Que tal? (Aplausos)
08:21
And 2028, 2030? It's just around the corner.
145
485177
4038
E 2028, 2030? Estão quase aí.
08:25
I mean, it's about three Rolling Stones farewell concerts away.
146
489215
4281
08:29
(Laughter) I hope. I'm hoping.
147
493496
5327
(Risos) Eu espero. Estou esperando.
08:34
Makes us look really young.
148
498823
3687
Faz a gente se sentir muito jovem.
08:38
So why aren't we jumping up and down about this?
149
502510
3026
08:41
Well, the opportunity is real, but so is the jeopardy.
150
505536
3711
08:45
We can't get this done until we really accept
151
509247
3814
Não podemos fazer isso até que aceitemos
08:48
that we can get this done.
152
513061
2475
que podemos fazê-lo.
08:51
Look at this graph.
153
515536
2253
Vejam o gráfico.
08:53
It's called inertia. It's how we screw it up.
154
517789
4818
Chama-se inércia. É como arruinamos tudo.
08:58
And the next one is really beautiful.
155
522607
1874
E o próximo é mesmo lindo.
09:00
It's called momentum.
156
524481
3533
Chama-se momentum.
09:03
And it's how we can bend the arc of history
157
528014
4556
09:08
down towards zero,
158
532570
1628
em direção ao zero,
09:10
just doing the things that we know work.
159
534198
2399
fazendo o que sabemos que dá certo.
09:12
So inertia versus momentum.
160
536597
2045
Portanto, inércia versus momentum.
09:14
There is jeopardy, and of course,
161
538642
2541
Há perigo, e claro,
09:17
the closer you get, it gets harder.
162
541183
2372
quanto mais perto chegamos, mais difícil fica.
09:19
We know the obstacles that are in our way
163
543555
1944
09:21
right now, in difficult times.
164
545499
2025
agora, em tempos difíceis.
09:23
In fact, today in your capital, in difficult times,
165
547524
5141
09:28
some who mind the nation's purse want to cut
166
552665
2575
09:31
life-saving programs like the Global Fund.
167
555240
2405
09:33
But you can do something about that.
168
557645
1813
Mas vocês podem fazer algo a respeito.
09:35
You can tell politicians
169
559458
1984
Podem dizer aos políticos
09:37
that these cuts [can cost] lives.
170
561442
2906
que esses cortes podem custar vidas.
09:40
Right now today, in Oslo as it happens,
171
564348

Hoje mesmo, em Oslo,
09:43
oil companies are fighting to keep secret
172
567925

09:46
their payments to governments

174

09:51
You can do something about that too.
175
575487
1719
09:53
You can join the One Campaign,
176
577206
1860
Podem juntar-se ao One Campaign,
09:54
and leaders like Mo Ibrahim, the telecom entrepreneur.
177
579066
4353
09:59
We're pushing for laws that make sure that at least some
178
583419
3823
10:03
of the wealth under the ground
179
587242
2472
da riqueza sob o solo
10:05
ends up in the hands of the people living above it.
180
589714
3571
10:09
And right now, we know
181
593285
3767
E agora, sabemos
10:12
that the biggest disease of all
182
597052
3712
que a maior doença de todas
10:16
is not a disease. It's corruption.
183
600764
2963
não é uma doença. É a corrupção.
10:19
But there's a vaccine for that too.
184
603727
1824
Mas há uma vacina para isso também.
10:21
It's called transparency, open data sets,
185
605551
3491
Chama-se transparência, conjuntos de dados abertos,
10:24
something the TED community is really on it.
186
609042
5011
algo que a comunidade TED conhece bem.
10:29
Daylight, you could call it, transparency.
187
614053
3612
Claridade, poderíamos chamá-la, transparência.
10:33
And technology is really turbocharging this.
188
617665
2562
E a tecnologia está turbinando isso.
10:36
It's getting harder to hide if you're doing bad stuff.
189
620227
4751
10:40
So let me tell you about the U-report,
190

Vou contar sobre o U-report,
10:43
which I'm really excited about. It's 150,000 millennials
191
627960

que me entusiasma muito. São 150.000 jovens
10:47
all across Uganda, young people
192

por toda a Uganda, jovens
10:49
armed with 2G phones, an SMS social network

armados com fones 2G, uma rede social SMS
10:54
exposing government corruption
194

expondo a corrupção do governo
10:57
and demanding to know what's in the budget
195

e exigindo saber sobre o dinheiro público
10:59
and how their money is being spent.
196
643940
2863
e a forma como ele é gasto.
11:02
This is exciting stuff.
197
646803
2675
Isso é emocionante.
11:05
Look, once you have these tools,
198
649478
3363
Vejam, ao ter essas ferramentas,
11:08
you can't not use them.
199
652841
1724
não há como não usá-las.
11:10
Once you have this knowledge, you can't un-know it.
200
654565
2526
11:12
You can't delete this data from your brain,
201
657091
3275
11:16
but you can delete the cliched image
202
660366
2823
mas você consegue deletar a imagem clichê
11:19
of supplicant, impoverished peoples
203
663189
2238
do povo suplicante, empobrecido
11:21
not taking control of their own lives.
204
665427
2072
sem controle de suas próprias vidas.
11:23
You can erase that, you really can,
205
667499
2382
Você consegue apagar isso, consegue sim,
11:25
because it's not true anymore. (Applause)
206
669881
5477
porque não é mais verdade. (Aplausos)
11:31
It's transformational.
207
675358
2852
É transformador.
11:34
2030? By 2030, robots,
208
678210
3873
2030? Até 2030, robôs,
11:37
not just serving us Guinness, but drinking it.
209
682083
2794
11:40
By the time we get there,
210
684877
2134
Quando chegarmos lá,
11:42
every place with a rough semblance of governance
211
687011
3129
11:46
might actually be on their way.
212
690140
4030
podem realmente estar a caminho de ser.
11:50
So I'm here to -- I guess we're here
213
694170
3805
11:53
to try and infect you with this virtuous, data-based virus,
214
697975
5508
11:59
the one we call factivism.
215
703483
2050
denominada fativismo.
12:01
It's not going to kill you.
216
705533
1644
Ela não vai matá-los.
12:03
In fact, it could save countless lives.
217
707177
4093
Na verdade, poderia salvar inúmeras vidas.
12:07
I guess we in the One Campaign would love you
218
711270
2679
Acho que nós da One Campaign adoraríamos
12:09
to be contagious, spread it, share it, pass it on.
219
713949
5037
12:14
By doing so, you will join us and countless others
220
718986
5210
12:20
in what I truly believe is the greatest adventure ever taken,
221
724196
4963
12:25
the ever-demanding journey of equality.
222
729159
4238
12:29
Could we really be the great generation
223
733397
3237
Poderíamos de fato ser a grande geração
12:32
that Mandela asked us to be?
224
736634
1961
que Mandela nos pediu para ser?
12:34
Might we answer that clarion call with science,
225
738595
3980
Deveríamos responder a esse clamor com ciência,
12:38
with reason, with facts,
226
742575
2659
com razão, com fatos,
12:41
and, dare I say it, emotions?
227
745234
4038
e, ouso dizer, emoções?
12:45
Because as is obvious, factivists have feelings too.
228
749272
6132
12:51
I'm thinking of Wael Ghonim, though.
229
755404
2487
Estou pensando em Wael Ghonim.
12:53
Some of you know him. He set up one of the Facebook groups
230
757891
2275
Alguns o conhecem. Ele criou um grupo no Facebook,
12:56
behind the Tahrir Square in Cairo.
231

sobre a Praça Tahrir, no Cairo.
13:00
He got thrown in jail for it,
232
764269

Ele foi posto na cadeia por isso,
13:01
but I have his words tattooed on my brain.
233
765819

13:06
"We are going to win because we don't understand politics.

"Nós vamos vencer porque não entendemos de política.
13:10
We are going to win because we don't play their dirty games.
235

Nós vamos vencer porque não fazemos jogos sujos.
13:14
We are going to win because we don't have a party political agenda.
236
778154
3288
13:17
We are going to win because the tears
237
781442
1971
Nós vamos vencer porque as lágrimas
13:19
that come from our eyes actually come from our hearts.
238
783413
3106
13:22
We are going to win because we have dreams,
239
786519
2864
Nós vamos vencer porque temos sonhos,
13:25
and we're willing to stand up for those dreams."
240
789383

e estamos dispostos a lutar por esses sonhos."
13:28
Wael is right.
241
792893
2313
Wael está certo.
13:31
We're going to win
242
795206
1862
Nós vamos vencer
13:32
if we work together as one,
243
797068
2232
se trabalharmos juntos como um só,
13:35
because the power of the people
