ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sergey Brin - Computer scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist
Sergey Brin is half of the team that founded Google.

Why you should listen

Sergey Brin and Larry Page met in grad school at Stanford in the mid-'90s, and in 1996 started working on a search technology based around a new idea: that relevant results come from context. Their technology analyzed the number of times a given website was linked to by other sites — assuming that the more links, the more relevant the site — and ranked sites accordingly. Despite being a late entrant to the search game, it now rules the web.

Brin and Page's innovation-friendly office culture has spun out lucrative new products including AdSense/AdWords, Google News, Google Maps, Google Earth, and Gmail, as well as the Android mobile operating system. Now, led by Brin, Google is pursuing problems beyond the page, like the driverless car and the digital eyewear known as Google Glass .

Sergey Brin: Why Google Glass?

Sergey Brin: Por que Google Glass?

Filmed:

02:42
I like to pay attention to these
26
150028
1250
Eu gosto de prestar atenção a elas
02:43
because that's how we originally funded the company,
27
151278
2668
porque foi como nós originalmente
fundamos a empresa,
02:45
and it's gone pretty well.
28
153946
4121
e foi muito bom.
02:50
Though in all seriousness,
29
158067
1726
Mas falando sério,
02:51
this position that you just saw me in,
30
159793
3192
essa posição em que vocês me viram,
02:54
looking down at my phone,
31
162985
2432
olhando para o meu telefone,
02:57
that's one of the reasons behind this project, Project Glass.
32
165417
4192
é uma das razões por trás
desse projeto, o Projeto Glass.
03:01
Because we ultimately questioned
33
169609
2582
Porque nós finalmente questionamos
03:04
whether this is the ultimate future
34
172191
2516
se esse é o destino final
03:06
of how you want to connect to other people in your life,
35
174707
2990
de como queremos nos conectar
a outras pessoas em sua vida,
03:09
how you want to connect to information.
36
177697
2354
como queremos nos conectar à informação.
03:12
Should it be by just walking around looking down?
37
180051
3694
Deveria ser apenas andando por aí,
olhando para baixo?
03:15
But that was the vision behind Glass,
38
183745
2888
03:18
and that's why we've created this form factor.
39
186633
6629
03:27
Okay. And I don't want to go through all the things it does and whatnot,
40
195223
6732
Ok.
03:33
but I want to tell you a little bit more
41
201955
1368
mas eu quero falar um pouco mais
03:35
about the motivation behind what led to it.
42
203323
3698
03:39
In addition to potentially socially isolating yourself
43
207021
4261
03:43
when you're out and about looking at your phone,
44
211282
2557
03:45
it's kind of, is this what you're meant to do with your body?
45
213839
4858
meio que, é isso que você deveria
fazer com o seu corpo?
03:50
You're standing around there
46
218697
1633
Você está ali em pé
03:52
and you're just rubbing
47
220330
1368
e só está esfregando
03:53
this featureless piece of glass.
48
221698
1833
essa peça inexpressiva de vidro.
03:55
You're just kind of moving around.
49
223531
2724
03:58
So when we developed Glass, we thought really about,
50
226255
3469
Então quando nós desenvolvemos o Glass,
pensamos realmente,
04:01
can we make something that frees your hands?
51
229724
3197
04:04
You saw all of the things people are doing
52
232921
1483
Vocês viram todas as coisas
que as pessoas estão fazendo
04:06
in the video back there.
53
234404
1543
no vídeo lá.
04:07
They were all wearing Glass,
54
235947
1085
Todos estão usando o Glass,
04:09
and that's how we got that footage.
55
237032
3055
04:12
And also you want something that frees your eyes.
56
240087
3099
04:15
That's why we put the display up high,
57
243186
2722
04:17
out of your line of sight,
58
245908
1449
fora de sua linha de visão,
04:19
so it wouldn't be where you're looking
59
247357
2727
para que não a atrapalhasse
04:22
and it wouldn't be where you're making
60
250084
1100
e não impedisse você de fazer
04:23
eye contact with people.
61
251184
2121
contato visual com as pessoas.
04:25
And also we wanted to free up the ears,
62
253305
2878
E também queríamos liberar os ouvidos,
04:28
so the sound actually goes through,
63
256183
4006
para que o som realmente passe,
04:32
conducts straight to the bones in your cranium,
64
260189
3497
04:35
which is a little bit freaky at first, but you get used to it.
65
263686
3544
que fica um pouco estranho no começo,
mas você se acostuma.
04:39
And ironically, if you want to hear it better,
66
267230
2463
E ironicamente, se você quer ouvir melhor,
04:41
you actually just cover your ear,
67
269693
2641
basta cobrir o ouvido,
04:44
which is kind of surprising, but that's how it works.
68
272334
5112
04:49
My vision when we started Google 15 years ago
69
277446
3041
Minha visão quando começamos
com o Google há 15 anos
04:52
was that eventually you wouldn't
70
280487
1317
era que um dia você não
04:53
have to have a search query at all.
71
281804
3473
precisaria fazer uma consulta
de pesquisa de modo algum.
04:57
You'd just have information come to you as you needed it.
72
285277
3290
A informação seria apenas levada
até você quando você precisasse.
05:00
And this is now, 15 years later,
73
288567
2398
E isso é agora, 15 anos depois,
05:02
sort of the first form factor
74
290965
2440
meio que o primeiro design
05:05
that I think can deliver that vision
75
293405
1665
05:07
when you're out and about on the street
76
295070
1675
quando você está fora e na rua
05:08
talking to people and so forth.
77
296745
3756
05:12
This project has lasted now, been just over two years.
78
300501
3546
Esse projeto durou até agora,
foram pouco mais de dois anos.
05:16
We've learned an amazing amount.
79
304047
2510
Nós aprendemos uma quantidade incrível.
05:18
It's been really important to make it comfortable.
80
306557
3016
Tem sido muito importante fazê-lo confortável.
05:21
So our first prototypes we built were huge.
81
309573
4079
Assim, nossos primeiros modelos eram enormes.
05:25
It was like cell phones strapped to your head.
82
313652
2209
Eram como celulares amarrados à sua cabeça.
05:27
It was very heavy, pretty uncomfortable.
83
315861
3059
Era muito pesado, bastante desconfortável.
05:30
We had to keep it secret from our industrial designer
84
318920
3201
Tivemos que manter segredo
da nossa designer industrial
05:34
until she actually accepted the job,
85
322121
1804
até que ela realmente aceitou o trabalho,
05:35
and then she almost ran away screaming.
86
323925
3284
e então ela quase fugiu gritando.
05:39
But we've come a long way.
87
327209
2572
Mas nós percorremos um longo caminho.
05:41
And the other really unexpected surprise was the camera.
88
329781
3088
E a outra surpresa realmente inesperada foi a câmera.
05:44
Our original prototypes didn't have cameras at all,
89
332869
2497
Nossos modelos originais não tinham câmera alguma,
05:47
but it's been really magical to be able to capture moments
90
335366
3165
mas tem sido mágico de verdade
poder capturar momentos
05:50
spent with my family, my kids.
91
338531
2562
dedicados à minha família, meus filhos.
05:53
I just never would have dug out a camera
92
341093
2633
Eu nunca teria pego uma câmera
05:55
or a phone or something else to take that moment.
93
343726
2559
ou um celular ou alguma outra coisa
para registrar aquele momento.
05:58
And lastly I've realized, in experimenting with this device,
94
346285
5049
E finalmente eu percebi, experimentando esse aparelho
06:03
that I also kind of have a nervous tic.
95
351334
4065
06:07
The cell phone is -- yeah, you have to look down on it and all that,
96
355399
4044
06:11
but it's also kind of a nervous habit.
97
359443
2497
06:13
Like if I smoked, I'd probably just smoke instead.
98
361940
2947
06:16
I would just light up a cigarette. It would look cooler.
99
364887
2418
Eu iria acender um cigarro.
Pareceria mais legal fazer isso.
06:19
You know, I'd be like --
100
367305
3421
Sabem, eu faria...
06:22
But in this case, you know, I whip this out
101
370726
2075
Mas nesse caso, eu pego o celular
06:24
and I sit there and look as if I have something
102
372801
2028
06:26
very important to do or attend to.
103
374829
2813
muito importante para fazer ou tratar.
06:29
But it really opened my eyes to how much of my life
104
377642
3224
Mas isso realmente abriu os meus olhos
para quanto da minha vida
06:32
I spent just secluding away,
105
380866
4405
eu gastei me afastando do contato físico,
06:37
be it email or social posts or whatnot,
106
385271
3212
seja por mensagens de email
ou redes sociais ou sei lá o quê,
06:40
even though it wasn't really --
107
388483
1447
mesmo que não fosse realmente --
06:41
there's nothing really that important or that pressing.
108
389930
2981
não tinha nada realmente importante ou urgente.
06:44
And with this, I know I will get certain messages
109
392911
2703
06:47
if I really need them,
110
395614
1502
se eu realmente precisar delas,
06:49
but I don't have to be checking them all the time.
111
397116
4095
06:53
Yeah, I've really enjoyed actually exploring the world more,
112
401211
2980
Sim, eu me diverti de verdade
explorando mais o mundo,
06:56
doing more of the crazy things like you saw in the video.
113
404191
4721
fazendo mais coisas malucas
como as que vocês viram no vídeo.
07:00
Thank you all very much.
114
408912
2028
Muito obrigado a todos vocês.
