ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anas Aremeyaw Anas - Undercover journalist
Anas Aremeyaw Anas is a Ghanaian undercover journalist and private eye who gathers hard evidence of crime and corruption, putting the perpetrators behind bars.

Why you should listen

Working in Ghana and across the African continent, Anas Aremeyaw Anas is an undercover journalist and private eye. In disguise, he finds his way into asylums, brothels and villages, where he methodically gathers evidence for hard-hitting stories -- then presents the evidence to authorities to see criminals prosecuted.

His work on human trafficking won him the US State Department Hero Award in 2008. In President Barack Obama's 2009 policy address in Ghana, he singled out Anas and commended him as "a courageous journalist who risked his life to report the truth.” His investigation in “Mad House” of a Ghanaian psychiatric ward led to a widespread awareness of mental health issues in Ghana and the passage of the 2012 Ghana Mental Health Act. His exposé of a trafficking ring in “Chinese Sex Mafia” led to three human traffickers receiving a 41-year jail sentence, while "Spell of the Albino," produced as part of Al-Jazeera's Africa Investigates series, led to widespread awareness of a sinister trade in body parts. “Enemies of the Nation,” which uncovered corruption at Ghana’s Tema Harbor, led to the recovery of $200 million in state funds.

Anas was honored as one of Foreign Policy's 2015 Global Thinkers.

Desculpem-me por não mostrar meu rosto,
00:17
because if I do, the bad guys will come for me.
1
5119

00:22
My journey started 14 years ago.
2
10205
4088
Minha jornada começou há 14 anos.
00:26
I was a young reporter. I had just come out of college.
3
14293
4412
Eu era um repórter jovem. Tinha acabado de sair da faculdade.
00:30
Then I got a scoop.
4
18705
2702
Então tive um furo jornalístico.
00:33
The scoop was quite a very simple story.
5
21407
3419
A matéria era uma história bem simples.
00:36
Police officers were taking bribes
6
24826
2604
Policiais estavam recebendo suborno
00:39
from hawkers who were hawking on the streets.
7
27430
3536
de ambulantes que vendiam nas ruas.
00:42
As a young reporter, I thought that I should do it
8
30966
2802
00:45
in a different way, so that it has a maximum impact,
9
33768
4169
00:49
since everybody knew that it was happening,
10
37937
1888
00:51
and yet there was nothing that was keeping it out of the system.
11
39825
3569
00:55
So I decided to go there
12
43394
2235
Então decidi ir até lá
00:57
and act as a seller.
13
45629
3965
e agir como um vendedor.
01:01
As part of selling, I was able to document
14
49594
3253
Como parte da venda, eu pude documentar
01:04
the hard core evidence.
15
52847
2792
as evidências consistentes.
01:07
The impact was great.
16
55639
2522
O impacto foi enorme.
01:10
It was fantastic.
17
58161
2561
Foi fantástico.
01:12
This was what many call immersion journalism,
18
60722
3730
01:16
or undercover journalism.
19
64452
2569
ou jornalismo infiltrado.
01:19
I am an undercover journalist.
20
67021
4248
Agora eu sou um jornalista infiltrado.
01:23
My journalism is hinged on three basic principles:
21
71269
4721
Meu jornalismo é baseado em três princípios:
01:27
naming, shaming and jailing.
22
75990
4800
identificar, denunciar e prender.
01:32
Journalism is about results.
23
80790
1870
Jornalismo baseia-se em resultados.
01:34
It's about affecting your community or your society
24
82660
3739
01:38
in the most progressive way.
25
86399
2637
de um modo progressista.
01:41
I have worked on this for over 14 years,
26
89036
4558
Trabalho nisso por mais de 14 anos,
01:45
and I can tell you, the results are very good.
27
93594
3232
01:48
One story that comes to mind
28
96826
2231
Uma história que me ocorre
01:51
in my undercover pieces
29
99057
2144
das minhas reportagens disfarçadas
01:53
is "Spirit Child."
30
101201
2211
é o "Filho Espiritual".
01:55
It was about children who were born with deformities,
31
103412
4076
Foi sobre crianças nascidas com deformidades,
01:59
and their parents felt that once they were born
32
107488
2745
02:02
with those deformities,
33
110233
1689
com aquelas deformidades,
02:03
they were not good enough to live in the society,
34
111922
2123
02:06
so they were given some concoction to take
35
114045
3108
02:09
and as a result they died.
36
117153
2577
e com isso elas morriam.
02:11
So I built a prosthetic baby,
37
119730
2817
Então construí um bebê protético,
02:14
and I went into the village,
38
122547
2150
e entrei no vilarejo,
02:16
pretended as though this baby had been born
39
124697
4148
fingindo que este bebê tinha nascido
02:20
with a deformity, and here was the guys who do the killing.
40
128845
4087
02:24
They got themselves ready.
41
132932
2575
Eles se prepararam.
02:27
In their bids to kill, I got the police on standby,
42
135507
3586
02:31
and they came that fateful morning
43
139093
2540
e eles vieram naquela manhã fatídica
02:33
to come and kill the child.
44
141633
2836
para matar a criança.
02:36
I recall how they were seriously boiling the concoction.
45
144469
4019
Lembro como eles seriamente ferveram o preparado
02:40
They put it on fire. It was boiling hot,
46
148488
2920
Colocaram-no no fogo. Estava fervendo,
02:43
getting ready to give to the kids.
47
151408
2472
e pronto para ser dado às crianças.
02:45
Whilst this was going on, the police I had alerted,
48
153880
1975
Durante isso, a polícia estava alerta,
02:47
they were on standby,
49
155855
2673
e em prontidão,
02:50
and just as the concoction was ready,
50
158528
3236
e assim que o preparado estava pronto,
02:53
and they were about to give it to the kids,
51
161764
3100
e estavam quase dando às crianças,
02:56
I phoned the police,
52
164864
1949
liguei para polícia,
02:58
and fortunately they came and busted them.
53
166813
4169
e felizmente vieram e prenderam os caras.
03:02
As I speak now, they are before the courts.
54
170982
2952
03:05
Don't forget the key principles:
55
173934
1814
Não esqueçam dos princípios chaves:
03:07
naming, shaming and jailing.
56
175748
2826
identificar, denunciar e prender.
03:10
The court process is taking place,
57
178574
2013
O processo judicial está correndo,
03:12
and I'm very sure at the end of the day
58
180587
2083
e tenho certeza que no fim
03:14
we will find them, and we will put them
59
182670
2449
nós os encontraremos, e os colocaremos
03:17
where they belong too.
60
185119
2743
onde eles devem estar.
03:19
Another key story that comes to mind,
61
187862
2688
Outra história que me ocorre,
03:22
which relates to this spirit child phenomenon,
62
190550
4347
relacionada com o fenômeno "filho espiritual",
03:26
is "The Spell of the Albinos."
63
194897
5476
é "O Feitiço dos Albinos".
03:32
I'm sure most of you may have heard, in Tanzania,
64
200373
3491
03:35
children who are born with albinism
65
203864
2376
as crianças nascidas com albinismo
03:38
are sometimes considered as being unfit
66
206240
4053
são às vezes consideradas inaptas
03:42
to live in society.
67
210293
2699
para viver em sociedade.
03:44
Their bodies are chopped up with machetes
68
212992
3888
Seus corpos são cortados com facões
03:48
and are supposed to be used for some concoctions
69
216880
3328
e supostamente usados para preparados
03:52
or some potions for people to get money --
70
220208
2882
e poções para as pessoas ganharem dinheiro,
03:55
or so many, many stories people would tell about it.
71
223090
3795
e muitas e muitas histórias contadas a respeito disso.
03:58
It was time to go undercover again.
72
226885
2556
Tinha chegado o momento de me infiltrar novamente.
04:01
So I went undercover as a man who was interested
73
229441
3449
Então fui disfarçado como um homem interessado
04:04
in this particular business, of course.
74
232890
2133
neste negócio específico, claro.
04:07
Again, a prosthetic arm was built.
75
235023
2570
De novo, um braço protético foi feito.
04:09
For the first time, I filmed on hidden camera
76
237593
3579
04:13
the guys who do this, and they were ready to buy the arm
77
241172
4744
04:17
and they were ready to use it to prepare
78
245916
2150
e usá-lo no preparo
04:20
those potions for people.
79
248066
3664
dessas poções para as pessoas.
04:23
I am glad today the Tanzanian government has taken action,
80
251730
3576
04:27
but the key issue is that the Tanzanian government
81
255306
3142
04:30
could only take action because the evidence was available.
82
258448
4189
só fez algo porque havia evidências.
04:34
My journalism is about hard core evidence.
83
262637
3895
Meu jornalismo é trazer evidências reais e consistentes.
04:38
If I say you have stolen, I show you the evidence
84
266532
2399
Se digo que você roubou, eu mostro as evidências
04:40
that you have stolen.
85
268931
1503
que você roubou.
04:42
I show you how you stole it
86
270434
2317
Mostro como você roubou,
04:44
and when, or what you used
87
272751
1720
quando, o que usou,
04:46
what you had stolen to do.
88
274471
2268
o que você fez com o roubo.
04:48
What is the essence of journalism if it doesn't benefit society?
89
276739
4570
04:53
My kind of journalism is a product
90
281309
2444
04:55
of my society.
91
283753
3417
da minha sociedade.
04:59
I know that sometimes
92
287170
3178
Eu sei que algumas vezes
05:02
people have their own criticisms
93
290348
3672
as pessoas têm suas críticas
05:06
about undercover journalism.
94
294020
3488
em relação ao jornalismo infiltrado.
05:09
(Video) Official: He brought out some money from his pockets
95
297508
4178
05:13
and put it on the table,
96
301686
2954
e o colocou na mesa,
05:16
so that we should not be afraid.
97
304640
3315
então não temos que ter medo.
05:19
He wants to bring the cocoa and send it to Cote d'Ivoire.
98
307955
5783
05:25
So with my hidden intention, I kept quiet.
99
313738
3688
Então com minha intenção oculta, fiquei quieto.
05:29
I didn't utter a word.
100
317426
2390
Não disse uma palavra.
05:31
But my colleagues didn't know.
101
319816
1858
Mas meus colegas não sabiam.
05:33
So after collecting the money,
102

3221
Então depois de coletar o dinheiro,
05:36
when he left, we were waiting for him to bring the goods.
103
324895
3128
05:40
Immediately after he left, I told my colleagues that
104
328023
3435
05:43
since I was the leader of the group,
105
331458
1517
como eu era o líder do grupo,
05:44
I told my colleagues that if they come,
106
332975
2997
disse a eles que se eles voltassem,
05:47
we will arrest them.
107
335972
1301
nós os prenderíamos.
05:49
Second official: I don't even know the place called [unclear].

05:53
I've never stepped there before.
109
341500
1584
Nunca estive lá antes.
05:55
So I'm surprised.
110
343084
967
Então estou surpreso.
05:56
You see a hand counting money just in front of me.
111
344051

06:01
The next moment, you see the money in my hands,

No próximo momento, você vê o dinheiro nas minhas mãos,
06:05
counting, whereas I have not come into contact with anybody.

06:08

Não fiz negócio com ninguém.

without giving you something special.
149
463546
2480
sem algo especial para dar a vocês.
07:58
I have a piece, and I'm excited that
150
466026
3491
08:01
I'm sharing it for the first time with you here.
151
469517
4082
08:05
I have been undercover in the prisons.
152
473599
4106
Eu estive disfarçado na prisão.
08:09
I have been there for a long time.
153
477705
4186
Estive lá por muito tempo.
08:13
And I can tell you, what I saw is not nice.
154
481891
5029
E posso dizer-lhes, o que vi não é bonito.
08:18
But again, I can only affect society
155
486920
2901
08:21
and affect government if I bring out the hard core evidence.
156
489821
3576
e o governo se eu trouxer evidências consistentes.
08:25
Many times, the prison authorities have denied
157
493397
3372
Por muitas vezes, as autoridades prisionais negaram
08:28
ever having issues of drug abuse,
158
496769
2548
ter problemas com abuso de drogas,
08:31
issues of sodomy, so many issues they would deny
159
499317
3980
08:35
that it ever happens.
160
503297
1450
que aconteceram.
08:36
How can you obtain the hard core evidence?
161
504747
3364
Como pode se conseguir evidências consistentes?
08:40
So I was in the prison. ["Nsawan Prison"]
162
508111
3900
Então eu estava na prisão. "Prisão Nsawan"
08:44
Now, what you are seeing is a pile of dead bodies.
163
512011
4186
08:48
Now, I happen to have followed one of my inmates,
164
516197
3070
Bem, eu segui um dos prisioneiros,
08:51
one of my friends, from his sick bed till death,
165
519267
4556
08:55
and I can tell you it was not a nice thing at all.
166
523823
3641
e posso dizer-lhes não foi nada agradável.
08:59
There were issues of bad food being served
167
527464
3082
Havia problemas de comida ruim ser servida
09:02
as I recall that some of the food I ate
168
530546
4910
e lembro-me que alguns alimentos que comi
09:07
is just not good for a human being.
169
535456
4261
não eram bons para o ser humano.
09:11
Toilet facilities: very bad.
170
539717
4151
Os banheiros: muito ruins.
09:15
I mean, you had to queue to get proper toilets to attend --
171
543868
4393
09:20
and that's what I call proper,
172
548292
2716
09:23
when four of us are on a manhole.
173
551008
3409
09:26
It is something that if you narrate it to somebody,
174
554417
3740
09:30
the person wouldn't believe it.
175
558157
1834
a pessoa não vai acreditar.
09:31
The only way that you can let the person believe
176
559991
2206
A única maneira de fazer a pessoa acreditar
09:34
is when you show hard core evidence.
177
562197
2112
é mostrar uma evidência consistente.
09:36
Of course, drugs were abundant.
178
564309
3128
Claro, drogas eram abundantes.
09:39
It was easier to get cannabis, heroin and cocaine,
179
567437
2745
Era fácil conseguir maconha, heroína e cocaína,
09:42
faster even, in the prison than outside the prison.
180
570182
3703
09:45
Evil in the society is an extreme disease.
181
573885
4711
09:50
If you have extreme diseases,
182
578596
1922
Se você tem uma doença muito grave,
09:52
you need to get extreme remedies.
183
580518
2927
você precisa de remédios muito fortes.
09:55
My kind of journalism might not fit in other continents
184
583445
2734
09:58
or other countries,
185
586179
1682
ou outros países,
09:59
but I can tell you, it works in my part of the continent
186
587861
3448
mas posso dizer, funciona na minha
parte do continente
10:03
of Africa, because usually, when people talk
187
591309
2208
10:05
about corruption, they ask, "Where is the evidence?
188
593517
2725
10:08
Show me the evidence."
189
596242
1181
Mostre-me evidência."
10:09
I say, "This is the evidence."
190
597423
1905
Eu respondo: "Aqui está a evidência."
10:11
And that has aided in me putting a lot of people behind bars.
191
599328
4881
10:16
You see, we on the continent are able
192
604209
3520
Sabe, nós do continente somos capazes
10:19
to tell the story better because we face the conditions
193
607729
2584
10:22
and we see the conditions.
194
610313
2400
e as vemos.
10:24
That is why I was particularly excited
195
612713
1787
10:26
when we launched our "Africa Investigates" series
196
614500
2380
quando lançamos a série "A África Investiga"
10:28
where we investigated a lot of African countries.
197
616880
3201
em que investigamos muitos países africanos.
10:32
As a result of the success of the "Africa Investigates" series,
198
620081
3651
10:35
we are moving on to World Investigates.
199
623732
2538
estamos mudando para "O Mundo Investiga".
10:38
By the end of it, a lot more bad guys
200
626270
2643
Por fim, muito mais caras malvados
10:40
on our continent will be put behind bars.
201
628913
3630
10:44
This will not stop.
202
632543
1627
Isso não vai parar.
10:46
I'm going to carry on with this kind of journalism,
203
634170
2927
Eu continuarei com este tipo de jornalismo,
10:49
because I know that when evil men destroy,
204
637097
3428
pois sei que quando homens malignos destroem,
10:52
good men must build and bind.
205
640525
1988
homens bons devem construir e se unir.
10:54
Thank you very much.
206
642513
1273
Muito obrigado.
10:55
(Applause)
207
643786
8908
(Aplausos)
11:05
Chris Anderson: Thank you. Thank you.
208
653323
1698
Chris Anderson: Obrigado. Obrigado.
11:07
I have some questions for you.
209
655021
2248
Tenho algumas perguntas para você.
11:09
How did you end up in jail? This was just a few weeks ago, I believe, yeah?
210
657269
4230
11:13
AAA: Sure. You know, undercover is all about
211
661499
2215
AAA: Isso mesmo. Sabe, o disfarce tem a ver
11:15
setting the priorities right, so we got people
212
663714
2866
11:18
to take me to court.
213
666580
1838
que me levaram à justiça.
11:20
So I went through the very legal process,
214
668418
2216
Então passei pelo processo legal,
11:22
because at the end of the day, the prison authorities
215
670634
2224
porque no fim, as autoridades prisionais
11:24
want to check whether indeed you have been there or not,
216
672858
2616
11:27
and that's how I got in there.
217
675474
2014
e foi assim que eu entrei lá.
11:29
CA: So someone sued you in court,
218
677488
1778
CA: Então alguém o processou na justiça,
11:31
and they took you there, and you were in remand custody
219
679266
2807
11:34
for part of it, and you did that deliberately.
220
682073
2441
11:36
AAA: Yes, yes.
221
684514
1691
AAA: Sim, sim.
11:38
CA: Talk to me just about fear
222
686205
3163
CA: Fale-me sobre o medo
11:41
and how you manage that,
223
689368
1809
e como você se controla,
11:43
because you're regularly putting your life at risk.
224
691177
2633
11:45
How do you do that?
225
693810
1563
Como você faz isso?
11:47
AAA: You see, undercover is always a last resort.
226
695373
3190
AAA: Veja, o disfarce é sempre o último recurso.
11:50
Before we go undercover, we follow the rules.
227
698563
2214
Antes de me disfarçar, eu sigo as regras.
11:52
And I'm only comfortable and I'm purged of fear
228
700777
3070
E eu apenas estou confortável e livre do medo
11:55
whenever I am sure that all the steps
229
703847
2480
11:58
have been taken. I don't do it alone. I have a backup team
230
706327
3193
foram seguidos. Eu não faço isso sozinho.
Tenho uma equipe de apoio
12:01
who help ensure that the safety and all the systems
231
709535
3365
12:04
are put in place, but you've got to take
232
712900
1945
estão implementados, mas você tem que tomar
12:06
very intelligent decisions whenever they are happening.
233
714845
2751
decisões muito inteligentes quando algo acontece,
12:09
If you don't, you will end up losing your life.
234
717596
2616
12:12
So yes, when the backup systems are put in place,
235
720212
2504
12:14
I'm okay, I go in. Risky, yes,
236
722716
2088
estou bem e eu entro. É arriscado sim,
12:16
but it's a hazard of a profession.
237
724804
2656
mas é o risco da profissão.
12:19
I mean, everybody has their hazard.
238
727460
1553
Quero dizer, todo mundo corre risco.
12:21
And once you say that is yours,
239
729013
1933
12:22
you've got to take it, as and when it comes.
240
730946
2308
você tem que assumir, quando acontece.
12:25
CA: Well, you're an amazing human and you've done amazing work
241
733254
2691
12:27
and you've taught us a story
242
735945
1270
e contou-nos uma história
12:29
like no story I think any of us have heard before.
243
737215
3247
12:32
And we're appreciative. We salute you. Thank you so much, Anas.
244
740462
3844
E estamos agradecidos. Saudações. Muito obrigado, Anas.
12:36
AAA: Thank you.
245
744306
1124
AAA: Obrigado.
12:37
CA: Thank you. Stay safe. (Applause)
246
745430
4272
CA: Obrigado. Mantenha-se seguro. (Aplausos)
