"Yo napot, pacak!" Which, as somebody here must surely know,
0
0
6000
"Yo napot, pacak!" que alguém aqui deve saber que
00:24
means "What's up, guys?" in Magyar,
1
6000
3000
00:27
that peculiar non-Indo-European language spoken by Hungarians
2
9000
3000
peculiar língua não-Indo-Européia falada por Húngaros --
00:30
for which, given the fact that cognitive diversity is
3
12000
3000
00:33
at least as threatened as biodiversity on this planet,
4
15000
3000
tão ameaçada quando a biodiversidade neste planeta,
00:36
few would have imagined much of a future even a century or two ago.
5
18000
4000
00:40
But there it is: "Yo napot, pacak!"
6
22000
2000
Mas aí está: "Yo napot, pacak!"
00:42
I said somebody here must surely know, because
7
24000
4000
00:46
despite the fact that there aren't that many Hungarians to begin with,
8
28000
3000
apesar de não existirem tantos Húngaros assim,
00:49
and the further fact that, so far as I know, there's not a drop
9
31000
3000
00:52
of Hungarian blood in my veins, at every critical juncture of my life
10
34000
4000
00:56
there has been a Hungarian friend or mentor there beside me.
11
38000
4000
01:00
I even have dreams that take place in landscapes
12
42000
2000
01:02
I recognize as the landscapes of Hungarian films,
13
44000
4000
que reconheço de filmes Húngaros,
01:06
especially the early movies of Miklos Jancso.
14
48000
3000
especialmente dos primeiros filmes de Miklos Jancso.
01:09
So, how do I explain this mysterious affinity?
15
51000
4000
Então, como posso explicar esta misteriosa conexão?
01:13
Maybe it's because my native state of South Carolina,
16
55000
5000
Talvez seja porque a minha terra natal, a Carolina do Sul,
01:18
which is not much smaller than present-day Hungary,
17
60000
3000
01:21
once imagined a future for itself as an independent country.
18
63000
3000
01:24
And as a consequence of that presumption,
19
66000
2000
E como consequência desta presunção,
01:26
my hometown was burned to the ground by an invading army,
20
68000
4000
01:30
an experience that has befallen many a Hungarian town and village
21
72000
4000
01:34
throughout its long and troubled history.
22
76000
3000
através de sua longa e problemática história.
01:37
Or maybe it's because when I was a teenager back in the '50s,
23
79000
3000
01:40
my uncle Henry -- having denounced the Ku Klux Klan
24
82000
3000
meu tio Henry, que denunciara a Ku Klux Klan --
01:43
and been bombed for his trouble and had crosses burned in his yard,
25
85000
4000
01:47
living under death threat -- took his wife and children to Massachusetts for safety
26
89000
4000
01:51
and went back to South Carolina to face down the Klan alone.
27
93000
3000
e voltou a Carolina do Sul para encarar a KKK sozinho.
01:54
That was a very Hungarian thing to do,
28
96000
3000
01:57
as anyone will attest who remembers 1956.
29
99000
4000
02:01
And of course, from time to time Hungarians
30
103000
3000
E é claro, o tempo passou e Húngaros
02:04
have invented their own equivalent of the Klan.
31
106000
2000
inventaram a sua própria Klan.
02:06
Well, it seems to me that this Hungarian presence in my life
32
108000
7000
02:13
is difficult to account for, but ultimately I ascribe it to an admiration
33
115000
6000
02:19
for people with a complex moral awareness,
34
121000
3000
por pessoas de profunda consciência moral --
02:22
with a heritage of guilt and defeat matched by defiance and bravado.
35
124000
5000
02:27
It's not a typical mindset for most Americans,
36
129000
3000
02:30
but it is perforce typical of virtually all Hungarians.
37
132000
4000
02:34
So, "Yo napot, pacak!"
38
136000
2000
Então, "Yo napot, pacak!"
02:36
I went back to South Carolina after some 15 years amid the alien corn
39
138000
5000
02:41
at the tail end of the 1960s,
40
143000
3000
no final dos anos 60,
02:44
with the reckless condescension of that era
41
146000
3000
com aquele impulsivo desdém daquela era,
02:47
thinking I would save my people.
42
149000
2000
achando que poderia salvar meu povo.
02:49
Never mind the fact that they were slow to acknowledge they needed saving.
43
151000
4000
02:53
I labored in that vineyard for a quarter century before
44
155000
3000
Trabalhei naqueles vinhedos por 1/4 de século antes
02:56
making my way to a little kingdom of the just in upstate South Carolina,
45
158000
4000
03:00
a Methodist-affiliated institution of higher learning called Wofford College.
46
162000
4000
03:04
I knew nothing about Wofford
47
166000
2000
Não sabia nada sobre Wofford,
03:06
and even less about Methodism,
48
168000
2000
e menos ainda sobre Metodismo,
03:08
but I was reassured on the first day that I taught at Wofford College
49
170000
4000
03:12
to find, among the auditors in my classroom,
50
174000
2000
03:14
a 90-year-old Hungarian, surrounded by a bevy of middle-aged European women
51
176000
7000
03:21
who seemed to function as an entourage of Rhinemaidens.
52
183000
2000
que pareciam servir como as "Ninfas do Rio Reno".
03:23
His name was Sandor Teszler.
53
185000
3000
O nome dele era Sandor Teszler.
03:26
He was a puckish widower whose wife and children were dead
54
188000
4000
03:30
and whose grandchildren lived far away.
55
192000
3000
e com netos que moravam longe.
03:33
In appearance, he resembled Mahatma Gandhi,
56
195000
3000
Sua aparência lembrava Mahatma Gandhi
03:36
minus the loincloth, plus orthopedic boots.
57
198000
3000
03:39
He had been born in 1903 in the provinces
58
201000
4000
Ele nasceu em 1903 nas províncias
03:43
of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire,
59
205000
2000
do antigo Império Austro-Húngaro,
03:45
in what later would become Yugoslavia.
60
207000
3000
que posteriormente virou a Yugoslávia.
03:48
He was ostracized as a child, not because he was a Jew --
61
210000
3000
03:51
his parents weren't very religious anyhow --
62
213000
1000
seus pais não era muito religiosos --
03:52
but because he had been born with two club feet,
63
214000
3000
mas porque nascera com os pés tortos,
03:55
a condition which, in those days, required institutionalization
64
217000
5000
condição médica que na época requeriu internação
04:00
and a succession of painful operations between the ages of one and 11.
65
222000
4000
04:04
He went to the commercial business high school as a young man
66
226000
3000
04:07
in Budapest, and there he was as smart as he was modest
67
229000
5000
em Budapeste. E lá estava ele, inteligente e humilde,
04:12
and he enjoyed a considerable success. And after graduation
68
234000
3000
04:15
when he went into textile engineering, the success continued.
69
237000
3000
entrou no campo de Engenharia têxtil, e o sucesso continuara.
04:18
He built one plant after another.
70
240000
2000
Construiu várias fábricas.
04:20
He married and had two sons. He had friends in high places who
71
242000
3000
Ele casou e teve 2 filhos. Tinha amigos em posição privilegiada que
04:23
assured him that he was of great value to the economy.
72
245000
3000
04:26
Once, as he had left instructions to have done,
73
248000
5000
Certa vez, e como tinha instruido-o
04:31
he was summoned in the middle of the night by the night watchman at one of his plants.
74
253000
3000
04:34
The night watchman had caught an employee who was stealing socks --
75
256000
5000
04:39
it was a hosiery mill, and he simply backed a truck up to the loading dock
76
261000
3000
04:42
and was shoveling in mountains of socks.
77
264000
1000
e estava enchendo-o com montanhas de meias.
04:43
Mr. Teszler went down to the plant and confronted the thief and said,
78
265000
4000
Sr. Teszler foi lá e confrontou o ladrão e disse,
04:47
"But why do you steal from me? If you need money you have only to ask."
79
269000
5000
" Por que roubas de mim? Se precisasse de dinheiro era só pedir."
04:52
The night watchman, seeing how things were going and waxing indignant,
80
274000
4000
O vigia, vendo o desenrolar da trama e ficando indignado,
04:56
said, "Well, we're going to call the police, aren't we?"
81
278000
2000
disse " Vamos chamar a polícia, nao é?"
04:58
But Mr. Teszler answered, "No, that will not be necessary.
82
280000
3000
05:01
He will not steal from us again."
83
283000
2000
Ele não roubará de nós novamente."
05:03
Well, maybe he was too trusting, because he stayed where he was
84
285000
5000
05:08
long after the Nazi Anschluss in Austria
85
290000
2000
05:10
and even after the arrests and deportations began in Budapest.
86
292000
5000
05:15
He took the simple precaution of having cyanide capsules placed in lockets
87
297000
4000
05:19
that could be worn about the necks of himself and his family.
88
301000
3000
05:22
And then one day, it happened: he and his family were arrested
89
304000
4000
05:26
and they were taken to a death house on the Danube.
90
308000
3000
05:29
In those early days of the Final Solution, it was handcrafted brutality;
91
311000
4000
05:33
people were beaten to death and their bodies tossed into the river.
92
315000
4000
pessoas espancadas até a morte e jogadas no rio --
05:37
But none who entered that death house had ever come out alive.
93
319000
4000
e nunca ninguém havia saído dali com vida.
05:41
And in a twist you would not believe in a Steven Spielberg film --
94
323000
4000
05:45
the Gauleiter who was overseeing this brutal beating was the very same thief
95
327000
5000
05:50
who had stolen socks from Mr. Teszler's hosiery mill.
96
332000
4000
05:54
It was a brutal beating. And midway through that brutality,
97
336000
5000
Era um espancamento brutal. E no meio da brutalidade toda,
05:59
one of Mr. Teszler's sons, Andrew, looked up and said,
98
341000
3000
06:02
"Is it time to take the capsule now, Papa?"
99
344000
3000
" Agora podemos tomar a cápsula, papai?"
06:05
And the Gauleiter, who afterwards vanishes from this story,
100
347000
4000
E osupervisor, que depois desaparece da história,
06:09
leaned down and whispered into Mr. Teszler's ear,
101
351000
3000
abaixou e sussurrou no ouvido do Sr. Teszler,
06:12
"No, do not take the capsule. Help is on the way."
102
354000
3000
"Não tome o cianeto. Ajuda está vindo"
06:15
And then resumed the beating.
103
357000
2000
E continuaram os espancamentos.
06:17
But help was on the way, and shortly afterwards
104
359000
2000
06:19
a car arrived from the Swiss Embassy.
105
361000
3000
um carro chegou da Embaixada Suiça.
06:22
They were spirited to safety. They were reclassified as Yugoslav citizens
106
364000
4000
Eles foram levados para uma região segura. Foram reclassificados como cidadãos Yugoslavos
06:26
and they managed to stay one step ahead of their pursuers
107
368000
3000
06:29
for the duration of the War, surviving burnings and bombings
108
371000
4000
durante a guerra inteira, sobrevivendo fogo e bombardeios,
06:33
and, at the end of the War, arrest by the Soviets.
109
375000
2000
06:35
Probably, Mr. Teszler had gotten some money into Swiss bank accounts
110
377000
4000
Provavelmente o Sr. Teszler tinha algum dinheiro na Suiça,
06:39
because he managed to take his family first to Great Britain,
111
381000
4000
06:43
then to Long Island and then to the center of the textile industry in the American South.
112
385000
4000
06:47
Which, as chance would have it, was Spartanburg, South Carolina,
113
389000
4000
06:51
the location of Wofford College.
114
393000
2000
onde fica a Faculdade de Wofford.
06:53
And there, Mr. Teszler began all over again and once again achieved immense success,
115
395000
6000
E lá o Sr. Teszler começou tudo de novo, e novamente obteve sucesso tremendo,
06:59
especially after he invented the process
116
401000
2000
especialmente depois de inventar um processo
07:01
for manufacturing a new fabric called double-knit.
117
403000
3000
07:04
And then in the late 1950s, in the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education,
118
406000
7000
07:11
when the Klan was resurgent all over the South,
119
413000
3000
07:14
Mr. Teszler said, "I have heard this talk before."
120
416000
4000
07:18
And he called his top assistant to him and asked,
121
420000
5000
E ele chamou seu principal conselheiro e perguntou,
07:23
"Where would you say, in this region, racism is most virulent?"
122
425000
3000
"Onde você considera, nesta região, o lugar onde o racisco mais contamina?"
07:26
"Well, I don't rightly know, Mr. Teszler. I reckon that would be Kings Mountain."
123
428000
5000
" Bem, não sei exatamente, Sr. Teszler. Mas penso que seja Kings Mountain."
07:31
"Good. Buy us some land in Kings Mountain
124
433000
4000
"Bom. Compre terras naquela região,
07:35
and announce we are going to build a major plant there."
125
437000
2000
07:37
The man did as he was told, and shortly afterwards,
126
439000
3000
07:40
Mr. Teszler received a visit from the white mayor of Kings Mountain.
127
442000
4000
07:44
Now, you should know that at that time,
128
446000
3000
Agora, saiba que naquela época
07:47
the textile industry in the South was notoriously segregated.
129
449000
3000
a indústria têxtil no Sul era notoriamente segregada.
07:50
The white mayor visited Mr. Teszler and said,
130
452000
4000
O prefeito branco disse ao Sr. Teszler,
07:54
"Mr. Teszler, I trust you’re going to be hiring a lot of white workers."
131
456000
3000
" Sr.Teszler, acredito que o senhor irá contratar muitos funcionários brancos."
07:57
Mr. Teszler told him, "You bring me the best workers that you can find,
132
459000
4000
08:01
and if they are good enough, I will hire them."
133
463000
2000
08:03
He also received a visit from the leader of the black community,
134
465000
5000
08:08
a minister, who said, "Mr. Teszler, I sure hope you're going to
135
470000
2000
08:10
hire some black workers for this new plant of yours."
136
472000
2000
alguns negros para sua nova fábrica."
08:12
He got the same answer: "You bring the best workers that you can find,
137
474000
4000
Ele recebeu a mesma resposta. "Me traga seus melhores trabalhadores,
08:16
and if they are good enough, I will hire them."
138
478000
3000
08:19
As it happens, the black minister did his job better than the white mayor,
139
481000
3000
08:22
but that's neither here or there.
140
484000
1000
Mas isso não fez a diferença.
08:23
Mr. Teszler hired 16 men: eight white, eight black.
141
485000
4000
O Sr. Teszler contratou 16 homens, 8 brancos e 8 negros.
08:27
They were to be his seed group, his future foremen.
142
489000
3000
08:30
He had installed the heavy equipment for his new process
143
492000
3000
08:33
in an abandoned store in the vicinity of Kings Mountain,
144
495000
3000
08:36
and for two months these 16 men would live and work together,
145
498000
3000
e por 2 meses estes 16 homens viveriam e trabalhariam juntos,
08:39
mastering the new process.
146
501000
1000
especializando-se nos novos processos.
08:40
He gathered them together after an initial tour of that facility
147
502000
4000
Ele reuniu a turma após o tour inicial
08:44
and he asked if there were any questions.
148
506000
2000
08:46
There was hemming and hawing and shuffling of feet,
149
508000
2000
E começaram murmúrios hesitantes, pés inquietos,
08:48
and then one of the white workers stepped forward and said,
150
510000
3000
08:53
"Well, yeah. We’ve looked at this place and there's only one place to sleep,
151
515000
3000
"Pois bem, sim. Olhamos pra todo lado -- e há só um lugar pra dormir,
08:56
there's only one place to eat, there's only one bathroom,
152
518000
3000
08:59
there's only one water fountain. Is this plant going to be integrated or what?"
153
521000
4000
e só um bebedouro. Esta fábrica será integrada ou o que?"
09:05
Mr. Teszler said, "You are being paid twice the wages of any other textile workers in this region
154
527000
5000
09:10
and this is how we do business. Do you have any other questions?"
155
532000
4000
09:14
"No, I reckon I don't."
156
536000
1000
"Nao tenho não."
09:15
And two months later when the main plant opened
157
537000
4000
E 2 meses depois, quando a fábrica abriu
09:19
and hundreds of new workers, white and black,
158
541000
2000
e centenas de funcionários, brancos e negros,
09:21
poured in to see the facility for the first time,
159
543000
2000
entraram para vê-la pela primeira vez,
09:23
they were met by the 16 foremen, white and black, standing shoulder to shoulder.
160
545000
6000
09:29
They toured the facility and were asked if there were any questions, and
161
551000
4000
09:33
inevitably the same question arose:
162
555000
1000
inevitavelmente, a mesma pergunta fora levantada:
09:34
"Is this plant integrated or what?"
163
556000
2000
"Esta fábrica é integrada, ou o que?"
09:36
And one of the white foremen stepped forward and said,
164
558000
3000
09:39
"You are being paid twice the wages of any other workers
165
561000
4000
" Vocês estão sendo pagos o dobro de qualquer um
09:43
in this industry in this region and this is how we do business.
166
565000
4000
09:47
Do you have any other questions?"
167
569000
2000
Tem mais alguma pergunta?"
09:49
And there were none. In one fell swoop,
168
571000
4000
E não tiveram mais perguntas. De uma só vez,
09:53
Mr. Teszler had integrated the textile industry in that part of the South.
169
575000
4000
Sr. teszler integrou a indústria têxtil naquela região do Sul.
09:57
It was an achievement worthy of Mahatma Gandhi,
170
579000
3000
Era um feito digno de Mahatma Gandhi,
10:00
conducted with the shrewdness of a lawyer and the idealism of a saint.
171
582000
4000
10:04
In his eighties, Mr. Teszler, having retired from the textile industry,
172
586000
6000
10:10
adopted Wofford College,
173
592000
2000
adotou a Faculdade de Wofford --
10:12
auditing courses every semester,
174
594000
2000
fazendo auditorias em aulas todo semestre.
10:14
and because he had a tendency to kiss anything that moved,
175
596000
4000
10:18
becoming affectionately known as "Opi" -- which is Magyar for grandfather --
176
600000
4000
10:22
by all and sundry. Before I got there, the library of the college
177
604000
4000
por todos e mais alguns. Quando cheguei lá, a biblioteca da universidade
10:26
had been named for Mr. Teszler, and after I arrived in 1993,
178
608000
5000
10:31
the faculty decided to honor itself by naming Mr. Teszler Professor of the College --
179
613000
5000
10:36
partly because at that point he had already taken
180
618000
3000
10:39
all of the courses in the catalog, but mainly because
181
621000
3000
10:42
he was so conspicuously wiser than any one of us.
182
624000
5000
10:47
To me, it was immensely reassuring that the presiding spirit
183
629000
4000
10:51
of this little Methodist college in upstate South Carolina
184
633000
4000
desta pequena faculdade Metodista no norte da Carolina do Sul
10:55
was a Holocaust survivor from Central Europe.
185
637000
4000
10:59
Wise he was, indeed, but he also had a wonderful sense of humor.
186
641000
4000
11:03
And once for an interdisciplinary class,
187
645000
3000
Uma vez, para um curso interdisciplinar,
11:06
I was screening the opening segment of Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal."
188
648000
4000
11:10
As the medieval knight Antonius Block returns from the wild goose chase
189
652000
4000
11:14
of the Crusades and arrives on the rocky shore of Sweden,
190
656000
3000
eram as cruzadas, e chegou a rochosa costa Sueca,
11:17
only to find the specter of death waiting for him,
191
659000
3000
11:20
Mr. Teszler sat in the dark with his fellow students. And
192
662000
4000
11:24
as death opened his cloak to embrace the knight
193
666000
4000
11:28
in a ghastly embrace, I heard Mr. Teszler's tremulous voice:
194
670000
4000
11:32
"Uh oh," he said, "This doesn't look so good." (Laughter)
195
674000
4000
"Oh, oh," ele disse, "isso não é muito bom não."
11:36
But it was music that was his greatest passion, especially opera.
196
678000
7000
11:43
And on the first occasion that I visited his house, he gave me
197
685000
3000
11:46
honor of deciding what piece of music we would listen to.
198
688000
4000
a honra de escolher qual música escutaríamos.
11:50
And I delighted him by rejecting "Cavalleria Rusticana"
199
692000
4000
E eu o elegrei quando rejeitei "Cavalerria Rusticana"
11:54
in favor of Bela Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle."
200
696000
3000
a favor de "Bluebeard´s Castle" de Bela Bartok.
11:57
I love Bartok's music, as did Mr. Teszler,
201
699000
3000
12:00
and he had virtually every recording of Bartok's music ever issued.
202
702000
4000
e ele tinha virtualmente todas gravações existentes de Bartok.
12:04
And it was at his house that I heard for the first time
203
706000
2000
12:06
Bartok's Third Piano Concerto and learned from
204
708000
3000
o terceiro concerto de piano de Bartok, e aprendi de
12:09
Mr. Teszler that it had been composed in nearby Asheville, North Carolina
205
711000
5000
12:14
in the last year of the composer's life.
206
716000
2000
no último ano da vida do compositor.
12:16
He was dying of leukemia and he knew it,
207
718000
3000
Ele estava morrendo de leucemia e sabia disso,
12:19
and he dedicated this concerto to his wife,
208
721000
3000
e dedicou o concerto a sua esposa,
12:22
Dita, who was herself a concert pianist.
209
724000
3000
Dita, que era uma pianista de concerto.
12:25
And into the slow, second movement, marked "adagio religioso,"
210
727000
4000
E no segundo e lento movimento musical, chamado de "adagio religioso,"
12:29
he incorporated the sounds of birdsong that he heard
211
731000
4000
12:33
outside his window in what he knew would be his last spring;
212
735000
3000
12:36
he was imagining a future for her in which he would play no part.
213
738000
6000
12:42
And clearly this composition is his final statement to her --
214
744000
6000
12:48
it was first performed after his death --
215
750000
2000
12:50
and through her to the world.
216
752000
2000
por ela, para o mundo.
12:52
And just as clearly, it is saying, "It's okay. It was all so beautiful.
217
754000
7000
12:59
Whenever you hear this, I will be there."
218
761000
4000
Quando você escutar isso, eu estarei lá."
13:03
It was only after Mr. Teszler's death that I learned
219
765000
5000
13:08
that the marker on the grave of Bela Bartok in Hartsdale, New York
220
770000
4000
13:12
was paid for by Sandor Teszler. "Yo napot, Bela!"
221
774000
5000
fora paga por Sandor Teszler. "Yo napot, Bela!"
13:17
Not long before Mr. Teszler’s own death at the age of 97,
222
779000
5000
Não muito antes dele morrer aos 97 anos,
13:22
he heard me hold forth on human iniquity.
223
784000
4000
ele me escutou discorrer sobre a perversidade humana.
13:26
I delivered a lecture in which I described history
224
788000
2000
13:28
as, on the whole, a tidal wave of human suffering and brutality,
225
790000
4000
13:32
and Mr. Teszler came up to me afterwards with gentle reproach and said,
226
794000
5000
e o Sr. Teszler veio a mim depois, repreendendo-me gentilmente:
13:37
"You know, Doctor, human beings are fundamentally good."
227
799000
6000
"Sabe doutor, seres humanos são bons em sua essência."
13:43
And I made a vow to myself, then and there,
228
805000
4000
13:47
that if this man who had such cause to think otherwise
229
809000
4000
13:51
had reached that conclusion,
230
813000
1000
ainda chegou a esta conclusão,
13:53
I would not presume to differ until he released me from my vow.
231
815000
4000
13:57
And now he's dead, so I'm stuck with my vow.
232
819000
4000
14:01
"Yo napot, Sandor!"
233
823000
2000
"Yo napot, Sandor!"
14:03
I thought my skein of Hungarian mentors had come to an end,
234
825000
4000
14:07
but almost immediately I met Francis Robicsek, a Hungarian doctor --
235
829000
7000
14:14
actually a heart surgeon in Charlotte, North Carolina, then in his late seventies --
236
836000
4000
14:18
who had been a pioneer in open-heart surgery,
237
840000
2000
14:20
and, tinkering away in his garage behind his house,
238
842000
4000
14:24
had invented many of the devices that are standard parts of those procedures.
239
846000
5000
havia inventado muitos dos aparatos hoje padrão nestes procedimentos.
14:29
He's also a prodigious art collector, beginning as an intern in Budapest
240
851000
5000
14:34
by collecting 16th- and 17th-century Dutch art and Hungarian painting,
241
856000
4000
colecionando arte holandesa e pinturas Húngaras dos séculos 16 e 17,
14:38
and when he came to this country moving on to Spanish colonial art,
242
860000
5000
14:43
Russian icons and finally Mayan ceramics.
243
865000
3000
imagens Russas e no final, cerâmicas Maias.
14:46
He's the author of seven books, six of them on Mayan ceramics.
244
868000
3000
14:49
It was he who broke the Mayan codex, enabling scholars to relate
245
871000
4000
14:53
the pictographs on Mayan ceramics to the hieroglyphs of the Mayan script.
246
875000
4000
14:57
On the occasion of my first visit, we toured his house
247
879000
3000
15:00
and we saw hundreds of works of museum quality,
248
882000
3000
e observamos centenas de trabalhos de qualidade de museu,
15:03
and then we paused in front of a closed door and Dr. Robicsek said,
249
885000
5000
e daí paramos defronte uma porta fechada e o Dr. Robicsek disse,
15:08
with obvious pride, "Now for the piece de resistance."
250
890000
3000
orgulhosamente, "Agora vamos ao prato principal."
15:11
And he opened the door and we walked into a
251
893000
3000
E ele abriu a porta, e entramos num
15:14
windowless 20-by-20-foot room with shelves from floor to ceiling, and
252
896000
6000
15:20
crammed on every shelf his collection of Mayan ceramics.
253
902000
2000
lotada com sua coleção de cerâmicas Maia.
15:22
Now, I know absolutely nothing about Mayan ceramics,
254
904000
2000
15:24
but I wanted to be as ingratiating as possible so I said,
255
906000
3000
mas queria se o mais agradável possível. Então disse,
15:27
"But Dr. Robicsek, this is absolutely dazzling."
256
909000
4000
"Dr. Robicsek, isso é simplesmente fantástico."
15:31
"Yes," he said. "That is what the Louvre said.
257
913000
3000
"Sim," ele disse. "Foi isso que o Louvre disse.
15:34
They would not leave me alone until I let them have a piece,
258
916000
4000
15:38
but it was not a good one." (Laughter)
259
920000
2000
mas não foi uma das boas."
15:40
Well, it occurred to me that I should invite Dr. Robicsek
260
922000
4000
Bem, passou por minha mente convidar Dr. Robicsek
15:44
to lecture at Wofford College on -- what else?
261
926000
3000
15:47
-- Leonardo da Vinci. And further, I should invite him to meet
262
929000
4000
-- Leonardo da Vinci. Além disso, pensei em apresentá-lo
15:51
my oldest trustee, who had majored in French history at Yale
263
933000
4000
15:55
some 70-odd years before and, at 89, still ruled the world's
264
937000
5000
uns 70 e poucos anos antes, e aos 89 anos, ainda liderava a maior
16:00
largest privately owned textile empire with an iron hand.
265
942000
5000
16:05
His name is Roger Milliken. And Mr. Milliken agreed,
266
947000
4000
Ele se chama Roger Milliken. E Sr. Milliken concordou,
16:09
and Dr. Robicsek agreed. And Dr. Robicsek visited
267
951000
3000
e Dr. Robicsek concordou. E Dr. Robicsek veio e
16:12
and delivered the lecture and it was a dazzling success.

16:15
And afterwards we convened at the President's House with Dr. Robicsek
269
957000
4000
16:19
on one hand, Mr. Milliken on the other.
270
961000
1000
16:20
And it was only at that moment, as we were sitting down to dinner,
271
962000
3000
16:24
that I recognized the enormity of the risk I had created,
272
966000
2000
que percebi a imensidão do risco que havia criado.
16:26
because to bring these two titans, these two masters of the universe
273
968000
4000
Pois colocar estes dois titãs, estes dois mestres do universo
16:30
together -- it was like introducing Mothra to Godzilla over the skyline of Tokyo.
274
972000
5000
16:35
If they didn't like each other, we could all get trampled to death.
275
977000
3000
16:38
But they did, they did like each other.
276
980000
2000
Mas sim. Eles acabaram gostando um do outro.
16:40
They got along famously until the very end of the meal,
277
982000
3000
16:43
and then they got into a furious argument.
278
985000
2000
e eles se engajaram numa furiosa discussão.
16:45
And what they were arguing about was this:
279
987000
2000
16:47
whether the second Harry Potter movie was as good as the first. (Laughter)
280
989000
5000
16:52
Mr. Milliken said it was not. Dr. Robicsek disagreed.
281
994000
5000
Sr. Milliken dizia que não era. Dr. Robicsek descordava.
16:57
I was still trying to take in the notion that these titans,
282
999000
4000
Eu ainda estava tentando entender o que levava estes titãs e
17:01
these masters of the universe, in their spare time watch Harry Potter movies,
283
1003000
3000
17:04
when Mr. Milliken thought he would win the argument by saying,
284
1006000
4000
17:08
"You just think it's so good because you didn't read the book."
285
1010000
3000
"Você acha que o segundo é melhor porque não lera o livro."
17:11
And Dr. Robicsek reeled back in his chair, but quickly gathered his wits,
286
1013000
4000
A o Dr. Robicsek sentou-se, pensou sagazmente,
17:15
leaned forward and said, "Well, that is true, but I'll bet you went
287
1017000
3000
recurvou-se e disse, "É verdade, mas aposto que assistiu-o
17:18
to the movie with a grandchild." "Well, yes, I did," conceded Mr. Milliken.
288
1020000
5000
acompanhado de um netinho." "Sim, verdade," concedeu Mr. Milliken.
17:23
"Aha!" said Dr. Robicsek. "I went to the movie all by myself." (Laughter) (Applause)
289
1025000
5000
"A rá!" disse Sr, Robicsek. " Eu fui ao cinema sozinho."
17:28
And I realized, in this moment of revelation,
290
1030000
5000
E percebi, neste momento de revelação,
17:33
that what these two men were revealing was the secret
291
1035000
4000
17:37
of their extraordinary success, each in his own right.
292
1039000
3000
17:40
And it lay precisely in that insatiable curiosity,
293
1042000
4000
E está precisamente nesta curiosidade insaciável,
17:44
that irrepressible desire to know, no matter what the subject,
294
1046000
4000
aquele irrepreensível desejo pelo saber - seja qual for o assunto,
17:48
no matter what the cost,
295
1050000
2000
não importando o custo,
17:50
even at a time when the keepers of the Doomsday Clock
296
1052000
3000
17:53
are willing to bet even money that the human race won't be around
297
1055000
3000
17:56
to imagine anything in the year 2100, a scant 93 years from now.
298
1058000
5000
para imaginar algo sequer no ano 2100, a curtos 93 anos do agora.

"Live each day as if it is your last," said Mahatma Gandhi.

"Viva cada dia como se fosse seu último," disse Mahatma Ghandi.
18:05
"Learn as if you'll live forever."
300
1067000

"Aprenda como se fosse viver eternamente."
18:07
This is what I'm passionate about. It is precisely this.
301
1069000
5000
Esta é minha paixão. Precisamente.
18:12
It is this inextinguishable, undaunted appetite for learning and experience,
302
1074000
9000
18:21
no matter how risible, no matter how esoteric,
303
1083000
2000
sem importar o quão ridículo, ou esotérico,
18:23
no matter how seditious it might seem.
304
1085000
3000
ou quão sedutor pareça ser.
18:26
This defines the imagined futures of our fellow Hungarians --
305
1088000
6000
18:32
Robicsek, Teszler and Bartok -- as it does my own.
306
1094000
5000
Robicsek, Teszler e Bartok, assim como define o meu.
18:37
As it does, I suspect, that of everybody here.
307
1099000
4000

To which I need only add, "Ez a mi munkank; es nem is keves."
308
1103000

18:47
This is our task; we know it will be hard.
309
1109000
5000

Yo napot, pacak!" (Applause)
