ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Hannah Fry - Complexity theorist
Hannah Fry researches the trends in our civilization and ways we can forecast its future.

Why you should listen

Hannah Fry completed her PhD in fluid dynamics in early 2011 with an emphasis on how liquid droplets move. Then, after working as an aerodynamicist in the motorsport industry, she began work on an interdisciplinary project in complexity sciences at University College London. Hannah’s current research focusses on discovering new connections between mathematically described systems and human interaction at the largest scale.

Today I want to talk to you
about the mathematics of love.
0
303
4638
Hoje eu quero falar com vocês
sobre a matemática do amor.
00:16
Now, I think that we can all agree
1
4941
1740
Bem, acho que todos concordamos
00:18
that mathematicians
are famously excellent at finding love.
2
6681
4916
que os matemáticos são conhecidos
por sua excelência em encontrar amor.
00:23
But it's not just
because of our dashing personalities,
3
11597
3448
Mas não é só por causa
de nossa personalidade arrojada,
00:27
superior conversational skills
and excellent pencil cases.
4
15045
4499
habilidades superiores de conversa
e excelentes estojos de lápis.
00:31
It's also because we've actually done
an awful lot of work into the maths
5
19544
4526
É também porque já trabalhamos
extensamente na matemática
00:36
of how to find the perfect partner.
6
24070
2392
de como encontrar o parceiro perfeito.
00:38
Now, in my favorite paper
on the subject, which is entitled,
7
26462
3413
No meu artigo preferido
sobre o assunto, que se chama:
00:41
"Why I Don't Have a Girlfriend" --
(Laughter) --
8
29875
3496
"Por Que Eu Não Tenho Namorada"
(Risos)
00:45
Peter Backus tries to rate
his chances of finding love.
9
33371
3720
Peter Backus tenta avaliar
sua chance de encontrar amor.
00:49
Now, Peter's not a very greedy man.
10
37091
2366
Peter não é muito ganancioso.
De todas as mulheres
disponíveis no Reino Unido,
00:51
Of all of the available women in the U.K.,
11
39457
2085
00:53
all Peter's looking for
is somebody who lives near him,
12
41542
3413
tudo o que Peter quer é alguém
que more perto dele,
00:56
somebody in the right age range,
13
44955
1901
alguém na faixa de idade certa,
00:58
somebody with a university degree,
14
46856
2810
alguém com um diploma universitário,
alguém com quem
ele provavelmente vai se dar bem,
01:01
somebody he's likely to get on well with,
15
49666
2158
01:03
somebody who's likely to be attractive,
16
51824
2076
alguém que provavelmente seja atraente,
01:05
somebody who's likely
to find him attractive.
17
53900
2538
alguém que provavelmente
também o ache atraente.
01:08
(Laughter)
18
56438
3003
(Risos)
O que resulta numa estimativa
de 26 mulheres em todo o Reino Unido.
01:11
And comes up with an estimate
of 26 women in the whole of the UK.
19
59441
4986
01:17
It's not looking very good,
is it Peter?
20
65441
2161
Não parece muito bom, não é, Peter?
01:19
Now, just to put that into perspective,
21
67602
1867
Agora, só para colocar em perspectiva,
01:21
that's about 400 times fewer
than the best estimates
22
69469
3105
isso é 400 vezes menos
do que as melhores estimativas
01:24
of how many intelligent
extraterrestrial life forms there are.
23
72574
4225
de quantas formas inteligentes
de vida extraterrestre existem.
01:28
And it also gives Peter
a 1 in 285,000 chance
24
76799
4877
E também dá ao Peter
uma chance de 1 em 285 mil
de se esbarrar com qualquer
uma dessas moças especiais
01:33
of bumping into any one
of these special ladies
25
81676
2226
01:35
on a given night out.
26
83902
1386
em uma saída à noite.
01:37
I'd like to think
that's why mathematicians
27
85288
2203
Gosto de pensar que é por isso
que os matemáticos
01:39
don't really bother
going on nights out anymore.
28
87491
3424
não se preocupam mais em sair à noite.
01:42
The thing is that I personally
29
90915
1729
O fato é que eu, pessoalmente,
01:44
don't subscribe
to such a pessimistic view.
30
92644
2729
não aceito uma visão tão pessimista assim.
01:47
Because I know,
just as well as all of you do,
31
95373
2229
Porque eu sei, tão bem quanto todos vocês,
01:49
that love doesn't really work like that.
32
97602
2592
que o amor não funciona bem assim.
01:52
Human emotion isn't neatly ordered
and rational and easily predictable.
33
100194
5110
A emoção humana não é bem organizada,
racional e facilmente previsível.
01:57
But I also know that that doesn't mean
34
105304
2407
Mas também sei que isso não significa
01:59
that mathematics hasn't got something
that it can offer us
35
107711
3304
que a matemática não tem
nada para nos oferecer
02:03
because, love, as with most of life,
is full of patterns
36
111015
3951
porque o amor, assim como muito da vida,
está cheio de padrões
02:06
and mathematics is, ultimately,
all about the study of patterns.
37
114966
4076
e a matemática, fundamentalmente,
trata-se do estudo de padrões.
02:11
Patterns from predicting the weather
to the fluctuations in the stock market,
38
119042
4303
Padrões desde previsão do tempo
a variações do mercado de ações,
02:15
to the movement of the planets
or the growth of cities.
39
123345
3405
ao movimento dos planetas
ou ao crescimento das cidades.
02:18
And if we're being honest,
none of those things
40
126750
2704
E sendo sinceros, nenhuma dessas coisas
é bem organizada
e facilmente previsível também.
02:21
are exactly neatly ordered
and easily predictable, either.
41
129454
3396
02:24
Because I believe that mathematics
is so powerful that it has the potential
42
132850
5027
Porque eu acredito que a matemática
é muito poderosa e tem o potencial
02:29
to offer us a new way of looking
at almost anything.
43
137877
3754
de nos oferecer uma nova maneira
de encarar quase tudo.
02:33
Even something as mysterious as love.
44
141631
3556
Mesmo algo tão misterioso quanto o amor.
E assim, para tentar convencê-los
02:37
And so, to try to persuade you
45
145187
1488
02:38
of how totally amazing, excellent
and relevant mathematics is,
46
146675
4561
de como a matemática é totalmente
incrível, excelente e relevante,
02:43
I want to give you my top three
mathematically verifiable tips for love.
47
151236
7984
quero lhes dar minhas três melhores dicas
de amor matematicamente comprováveis.
02:51
Okay, so Top Tip #1:
48
159980
1959
Certo, então Dica #1:
02:53
How to win at online dating.
49
161939
2964
Como ser bem-sucedido
em encontros on-line.
02:58
So my favorite online dating
website is OkCupid,
50
166323
3836
Meu site de encontros on-line
preferido é o OkCupid,
03:02
not least because it was started
by a group of mathematicians.
51
170159
3415
sobretudo porque foi lançado
por um grupo de matemáticos.
03:05
Now, because they're mathematicians,
52
173574
1769
E, por serem matemáticos,
03:07
they have been collecting data
53
175343
1740
eles têm coletado dados
03:09
on everybody who uses their site
for almost a decade.
54
177083
2853
de todos que utilizam o site
por quase uma década.
03:11
And they've been trying
to search for patterns
55
179936
2264
E vêm tentando encontrar padrões
03:14
in the way that we talk about ourselves
56
182200
1867
na maneira como falamos de nós mesmos
03:16
and the way that we
interact with each other
57
184067
2117
e como interagimos uns com os outros
03:18
on an online dating website.
58
186184
1692
em um site de encontros on-line.
03:19
And they've come up with some
seriously interesting findings.
59
187876
2949
E eles fizeram algumas descobertas
muito interessantes.
Mas a minha preferida, pessoalmente,
03:22
But my particular favorite
60
190825
1622
03:24
is that it turns out
that on an online dating website,
61
192447
3380
é que parece que,
em um site de encontros on-line,
03:27
how attractive you are
does not dictate how popular you are,
62
195827
5845
ser atraente não define sua popularidade,
03:33
and actually, having people
think that you're ugly
63
201679
3712
e, na verdade, fazer as pessoas
pensarem que você é feio
03:37
can work to your advantage.
64
205391
2869
pode funcionar a seu favor.
03:40
Let me show you how this works.
65
208260
1806
Vou mostrar como funciona.
03:42
In a thankfully voluntary
section of OkCupid,
66
210066
4499
Em uma seção voluntária,
felizmente, do OkCupid,
03:46
you are allowed to rate
how attractive you think people are
67
214565
3000
você pode avaliar
o quão atraente as pessoas são
03:49
on a scale between 1 and 5.
68
217565
2457
em uma escala de 1 a 5.
03:52
Now, if we compare this score,
the average score,
69
220022
3340
E se compararmos essa pontuação,
a pontuação média,
03:55
to how many messages a
selection of people receive,
70
223362
2854
com quantas mensagens
um conjunto de pessoas recebe,
03:58
you can begin to get a sense
71
226216
1660
dá para começar a ter uma noção
03:59
of how attractiveness links to popularity
on an online dating website.
72
227876
3978
de como atração se relaciona
com popularidade em sites
de encontros on-line.
04:03
This is the graph that the OkCupid guys
have come up with.
73
231854
3323
Este é o gráfico que os caras
do OkCupid geraram.
04:07
And the important thing to notice
is that it's not totally true
74
235177
3053
E o importante a se notar é que
não é inteiramente verdade
que quanto mais atraente você for,
mais mensagens você recebe.
04:10
that the more attractive you are,
the more messages you get.
75
238230
2828
04:13
But the question arises then
of what is it about people up here
76
241058
3874
Mas então vem a pergunta:
por que as pessoas aqui em cima
04:16
who are so much more popular
than people down here,
77
244932
4634
são tão mais populares
que as aqui em baixo,
04:21
even though they have the
same score of attractiveness?
78
249566
2604
mesmo tendo a mesma pontuação em atração?
04:24
And the reason why is that it's not just
straightforward looks that are important.
79
252170
4529
A razão é que não é só puramente
a aparência que é importante.
04:28
So let me try to illustrate their
findings with an example.
80
256699
2778
Vou tentar ilustrar
suas descobertas com um exemplo.
04:31
So if you take someone like
Portia de Rossi, for example,
81
259477
4130
Se pegarmos alguém
como Portia de Rossi, por exemplo,
04:35
everybody agrees that Portia de Rossi
is a very beautiful woman.
82
263607
4672
todos concordam que Portia de Rossi
é uma mulher muito bonita.
04:40
Nobody thinks that she's ugly,
but she's not a supermodel, either.
83
268279
3661
Ninguém acha que ela é feia,
mas também não é uma top model.
04:43
If you compare Portia de Rossi
to someone like Sarah Jessica Parker,
84
271940
4621
Se comparar Portia de Rossi
a alguém como Sarah Jessica Parker,
04:48
now, a lot of people,
myself included, I should say,
85
276561
3285
bem, muita gente,
inclusive eu, devo dizer,
04:51
think that Sarah Jessica Parker
is seriously fabulous
86
279846
4474
acha que Sarah Jessica Parker
é realmente fabulosa
04:56
and possibly one of the
most beautiful creatures
87
284320
2670
e possivelmente
uma das criaturas mais lindas
04:58
to have ever have walked
on the face of the Earth.
88
286990
2649
que já caminhou na face da Terra.
05:01
But some other people,
i.e., most of the Internet,
89
289639
6021
Mas algumas outras pessoas,
ou seja, a maioria da Internet,
05:07
seem to think that she looks
a bit like a horse. (Laughter)
90
295660
6178
parecem achar que ela se parece
um pouco com um cavalo. (Risos)
05:13
Now, I think that if you ask people
how attractive they thought
91
301838
3260
Eu acho que se pedirmos a opinião
das pessoas sobre quão atraentes
05:17
Sarah Jessica Parker
or Portia de Rossi were,
92
305098
2162
Sarah Jessica Parker
e Portia de Rossi são,
05:19
and you ask them to give
them a score between 1 and 5,
93
307260
2953
e pedirmos para que lhes deem
uma pontuação de 1 a 5,
05:22
I reckon that they'd average out
to have roughly the same score.
94
310213
3005
estimo que as duas teriam,
em média, a mesma pontuação.
05:25
But the way that people would vote
would be very different.
95
313218
2761
Mas a forma como as pessoas
votariam seria diferente.
05:27
So Portia's scores would
all be clustered around the 4
96
315979
2543
As pontuações de Portia
se concentrariam em torno do 4
05:30
because everybody agrees
that she's very beautiful,
97
318522
2460
porque todo mundo concorda
que ela é muito bonita,
05:32
whereas Sarah Jessica Parker
completely divides opinion.
98
320982
2661
enquanto Sarah Jessica Parker
divide opiniões.
05:35
There'd be a huge spread in her scores.
99
323643
2424
Haveria uma grande dispersão
em suas pontuações.
05:38
And actually it's this spread that counts.
100
326067
2322
E, na verdade,
é essa dispersão que conta.
05:40
It's this spread
that makes you more popular
101
328389
2476
É essa dispersão
que a deixa mais popular
05:42
on an online Internet dating website.
102
330865
2200
em um site de encontros on-line.
05:45
So what that means then
103
333065
1171
E isso quer dizer então
05:46
is that if some people
think that you're attractive,
104
334236
2499
que se algumas pessoas
te acham atraente,
05:48
you're actually better off
105
336735
1948
é, na verdade, melhor para você
05:50
having some other people
think that you're a massive minger.
106
338683
5252
ter algumas pessoas que acham
que você é um grande tribufu.
05:55
That's much better
than everybody just thinking
107
343935
2238
É muito melhor do que todos pensarem
05:58
that you're the cute girl next door.
108
346173
1731
que você é a vizinha bonitinha.
05:59
Now, I think this begins
makes a bit more sense
109
347904
2249
Bem, eu acho que isso começa
a fazer mais sentido
06:02
when you think in terms of the people
who are sending these messages.
110
350153
3234
quando pensamos em termos
de quem manda as mensagens.
06:05
So let's say that you think
somebody's attractive,
111
353387
2351
Digamos que você acha alguém atraente,
06:07
but you suspect that other people
won't necessarily be that interested.
112
355738
4254
mas suspeita que outras pessoas
não necessariamente estariam interessadas.
06:11
That means there's
less competition for you
113
359992
2551
Significa que há
menos competição para você
06:14
and it's an extra incentive
for you to get in touch.
114
362543
2436
e é um incentivo extra
para entrar em contato.
06:16
Whereas compare that
to if you think somebody is attractive
115
364979
2824
Comparando, se você acha alguém atraente,
06:19
but you suspect that everybody
is going to think they're attractive.
116
367803
3257
mas suspeita que todos
vão achar que ela é atraente,
06:23
Well, why would you bother
humiliating yourself, let's be honest?
117
371060
3564
bem, por que você perderia tempo
se humilhando, sejamos sinceros?
06:26
Here's where the really
interesting part comes.
118
374628
2276
Aqui é onde entra a parte
realmente interessante.
06:28
Because when people choose the pictures
that they use on an online dating website,
119
376904
4474
Porque quando as pessoas escolhem as fotos
que usam em site de encontros on-line,
06:33
they often try to minimize the things
120
381378
2292
normalmente tentam minimizar as coisas
06:35
that they think some people
will find unattractive.
121
383670
3490
que acham que algumas pessoas
vão achar pouco atraente.
06:39
The classic example is people
who are, perhaps, a little bit overweight
122
387160
4297
O exemplo clássico são pessoas
que, talvez, estão um pouco acima do peso
06:43
deliberately choosing
a very cropped photo,
123
391457
3464
deliberadamente escolhendo fotos cortadas.
06:46
or bald men, for example,
124
394921
1757
Ou homens carecas, por exemplo,
06:48
deliberately choosing pictures
where they're wearing hats.
125
396678
2799
deliberadamente escolhendo fotos
onde estão usando chapéu.
06:51
But actually this is the opposite
of what you should do
126
399477
2665
Mas isso é exatamente
o oposto do que você deveria fazer
06:54
if you want to be successful.
127
402142
1394
se quiser ser bem-sucedido.
06:55
You should really, instead, play up to
whatever it is that makes you different,
128
403536
4811
Você deveria, de fato, enaltecer
qualquer coisa que o torne diferente,
07:00
even if you think that some people
will find it unattractive.
129
408356
3944
mesmo achando que algumas pessoas
vão achar pouco atraente.
Porque as pessoas que gostam de você
vão gostar de você de qualquer jeito,
07:04
Because the people who fancy you
are just going to fancy you anyway,
130
412300
3244
07:07
and the unimportant losers who don't,
well, they only play up to your advantage.
131
415544
4941
e os fracassados pouco importantes
que não gostam,
bem, eles só agem a seu favor.
Certo, Dica #2:
Como escolher o parceiro perfeito.
07:12
Okay, Top Tip #2:
How to pick the perfect partner.
132
420497
2400
07:14
So let's imagine then
that you're a roaring success
133
422897
2727
Então imaginemos que você
é um grande sucesso
07:17
on the dating scene.
134
425624
1468
no quesito namoro.
07:19
But the question arises
of how do you then convert that success
135
427092
4303
Mas surge a questão de como
você converte esse sucesso
07:23
into longer-term happiness
and in particular,
136
431395
3784
em felicidade a longo prazo
e, particularmente,
07:27
how do you decide
when is the right time to settle down?
137
435186
4251
como você decide
que é hora de se estabelecer?
07:31
Now generally,
it's not advisable to just cash in
138
439437
2832
Geralmente, não é aconselhável
recolher as fichas
e casar-se com a primeira
pessoa que aparecer
07:34
and marry the first person
who comes along
139
442269
2023
07:36
and shows you any interest at all.
140
444292
2213
e mostrar um mínimo de interesse em você.
07:38
But, equally, you don't really
want to leave it too long
141
446505
3154
Mas, do mesmo jeito, você não quer
deixar para esperar muito tempo
07:41
if you want to maximize your
chance of long-term happiness.
142
449659
3002
se quiser maximizar suas chances
de felicidade a longo prazo.
07:44
As my favorite author,
Jane Austen, puts it,
143
452661
3182
Como diz Jane Austen,
minha autora favorita,
07:47
"An unmarried woman of seven and twenty
144
455843
2218
"Uma mulher solteira de vinte e sete
07:50
can never hope to feel or
inspire affection again."
145
458061
3665
jamais poderia esperar sentir
ou inspirar afeição novamente."
07:53
(Laughter)
146
461726
1992
(Risos)
07:55
Thanks a lot, Jane.
What do you know about love?
147
463718
3554
Muito obrigada, Jane.
O que você sabe de amor?
07:59
So the question is then,
148
467836
1555
E a questão é a seguinte:
08:01
how do you know when
is the right time to settle down
149
469391
2605
como saber quando é
a hora certa de se estabelecer
considerando todas as pessoas
que você pode namorar em sua vida?
08:03
given all the people
that you can date in your lifetime?
150
471996
2679
08:06
Thankfully, there's a rather delicious bit
of mathematics that we can use
151
474675
3675
Por sorte, há uma coisinha deliciosa
na matemática que podemos usar
08:10
to help us out here, called
optimal stopping theory.
152
478350
2524
para nos ajudar aqui, chamada
teoria da parada ótima.
08:12
So let's imagine then,
153
480874
1900
Imaginemos então,
08:14
that you start dating when you're 15
154
482774
2270
que você começa a namorar com 15 anos
08:17
and ideally, you'd like to be married
by the time that you're 35.
155
485044
4084
e idealmente, você gostaria de estar
casado quando estiver com 35 anos.
08:21
And there's a number of people
156
489128
1540
E há um número de pessoas
08:22
that you could potentially
date across your lifetime,
157
490668
2486
que você poderia namorar
durante seu tempo de vida,
08:25
and they'll be at varying
levels of goodness.
158
493154
2154
e elas estariam
em vários níveis de qualidade.
08:27
Now the rules are that once
you cash in and get married,
159
495308
2891
E as regras são que uma vez que você
tenha decidido se casar,
08:30
you can't look ahead to see
what you could have had,
160
498199
2703
você não pode continuar vendo
o que poderia ter,
08:32
and equally, you can't go back
and change your mind.
161
500902
2610
e do mesmo modo, não pode
voltar e mudar de ideia.
Na minha experiência, pelo menos,
08:35
In my experience at least,
162
503512
1570
08:37
I find that typically people don't
much like being recalled
163
505082
2822
sei que tipicamente as pessoas
não gostam de serem relembradas
08:39
years after being passed up
for somebody else, or that's just me.
164
507904
5416
anos após terem sido trocadas
por outra, ou talvez seja só eu.
08:45
So the math says then
that what you should do
165
513320
3207
A matemática diz que
o que você deveria fazer
08:48
in the first 37 percent
of your dating window,
166
516527
3031
nos primeiros 37%
de sua janela de namoros
08:51
you should just reject everybody
as serious marriage potential.
167
519558
4441
seria rejeitar todo mundo
como sério potencial de casamento.
08:55
(Laughter)
168
523999
1514
(Risos)
08:57
And then, you should pick the
next person that comes along
169
525513
3806
E então, você deveria escolher
a primeira pessoa que aparecer
09:01
that is better than everybody
that you've seen before.
170
529319
2835
que for melhor que todas
as outras que você viu antes.
09:04
So here's the example.
171
532154
1322
Um exemplo.
09:05
Now if you do this, it can be
mathematically proven, in fact,
172
533476
2832
Se você fizer isso, pode ser provado
matematicamente, de fato,
09:08
that this is the best possible way
173
536308
2667
que essa é a melhor maneira
09:10
of maximizing your chances
of finding the perfect partner.
174
538975
4462
de maximizar suas chances
de encontrar o parceiro perfeito.
09:15
Now unfortunately, I have to tell you that
this method does come with some risks.
175
543437
4472
Infelizmente, devo dizer-lhes
que esse método tem seus riscos.
09:20
For instance, imagine if
your perfect partner appeared
176
548382
4690
Por exemplo, imaginem
que seu parceiro perfeito aparecesse
09:25
during your first 37 percent.
177
553072
3154
durante os primeiros 37%.
Assim infelizmente,
você teria que rejeitá-lo.
09:28
Now, unfortunately,
you'd have to reject them.
178
556226
2713
09:30
(Laughter)
179
558939
2713
(Risos)
09:33
Now, if you're following the maths,
180
561652
2345
E se estiverem acompanhando a matemática,
09:35
I'm afraid no one else comes along
181
563997
1666
receio que não vai aparecer ninguém
09:37
that's better than anyone
you've seen before,
182
565663
2127
que seja melhor do que os que você já viu.
09:39
so you have to go on
rejecting everyone and die alone.
183
567790
4303
Você teria que seguir rejeitando
todos e morrer sozinho.
09:44
(Laughter)
184
572093
1683
(Risos)
09:46
Probably surrounded by cats
nibbling at your remains.
185
574736
4881
Provavelmente rodeado de gatos
mordiscando seus restos.
09:51
Okay, another risk is,
let's imagine, instead,
186
579617
3805
Certo, outro risco é,
imaginemos, em vez disso,
09:55
that the first people that you dated
in your first 37 percent
187
583422
3245
que as primeiras pessoas que você
namorou em seus primeiros 37%
09:58
are just incredibly dull,
boring, terrible people.
188
586667
3840
são pessoas enfadonhas, chatas, terríveis.
10:02
Now, that's okay, because
you're in your rejection phase,
189
590507
2725
Está tudo bem, porque você está
na fase de rejeição,
10:05
so thats fine,
you can reject them.
190
593232
1841
está tudo bem, você pode rejeitá-las.
10:07
But then imagine, the next
person to come along
191
595073
3468
Mas imaginem que a próxima
pessoa que aparece
10:10
is just marginally less boring,
dull and terrible
192
598541
4338
é ligeiramente menos chata,
enfadonha e terrível
do que todos as outras
que você viu antes.
10:14
than everybody that you've seen before.
193
602879
1882
10:16
Now, if you are following the maths,
I'm afraid you have to marry them
194
604761
4202
Se estiverem acompanhando a matemática,
receio que teria que se casar com ela
10:20
and end up in a relationship
which is, frankly, suboptimal.
195
608963
3413
e acabar com um relacionamento
que está, francamente, abaixo do ideal.
10:24
Sorry about that.
196
612376
1083
Sinto muito por isso.
10:25
But I do think that there's
an opportunity here
197
613459
2200
Mas eu acho mesmo que há
uma oportunidade aqui
10:27
for Hallmark to cash in on
and really cater for this market.
198
615659
3150
de que a Hallmark possa aproveitar
e atender esse mercado.
Um cartão de dia dos namorados assim.
(Risos)
10:30
A Valentine's Day card like this.
(Laughter)
199
618809
2090
10:32
"My darling husband, you
are marginally less terrible
200
620899
4025
"Meu querido marido, você é
ligeiramente menos terrível
10:36
than the first 37 percent
of people I dated."
201
624924
3045
do que as primeiras 37%
pessoas que eu namorei."
10:39
It's actually more romantic
than I normally manage.
202
627969
5487
Realmente é mais romântico
do que eu normalmente consigo.
10:45
Okay, so this method doesn't give
you a 100 percent success rate,
203
633456
4682
Certo, esse método não garante
uma taxa de sucesso de 100%,
10:50
but there's no other possible
strategy that can do any better.
204
638138
3303
mas não há outra possível
estratégia que seja melhor.
10:53
And actually, in the wild,
there are certain types
205
641441
2663
E de fato, na natureza,
há certos tipos de peixes
10:56
of fish which follow and
employ this exact strategy.
206
644104
3713
que seguem e aplicam
essa mesma estratégia.
Eles rejeitam todos os possíveis
pretendentes que aparecem
10:59
So they reject every possible
suitor that turns up
207
647817
2639
11:02
in the first 37 percent
of the mating season,
208
650456
2957
nos primeiros 37%
da temporada de reprodução,
11:05
and then they pick the next fish
that comes along after that window
209
653413
3531
e escolhem o próximo peixe
que aparece depois dessa janela
11:08
that's, I don't know, bigger and burlier
210
656944
2056
que seja, sei lá, maior e mais corpulento
11:11
than all of the fish
that they've seen before.
211
659000
2518
que todos os outros peixes
que viram antes.
11:13
I also think that subconsciously,
humans, we do sort of do this anyway.
212
661518
4678
Também acho que, subconscientemente,
nós humanos meio que fazemos isso também.
11:18
We give ourselves a little bit of time
to play the field,
213
666196
3417
Nós esperamos um certo tempo
para conhecer o campo,
11:21
get a feel for the marketplace
or whatever when we're young.
214
669613
3502
entender o mercado ou o que seja
quando somos jovens.
11:25
And then we only start looking seriously
at potential marriage candidates
215
673115
4908
E só começamos a procurar seriamente
por candidatos ao casamento
11:30
once we hit our mid-to-late 20s.
216
678023
1890
quando nos aproximamos dos 30.
11:31
I think this is conclusive proof,
if ever it were needed,
217
679913
2803
Acho que isso é prova conclusiva,
se for necessário,
11:34
that everybody's brains are prewired
to be just a little bit mathematical.
218
682716
4506
que o cérebro de todos está pré-programado
para ser um pouquinho matemático.
11:39
Okay, so that was Top Tip #2.
219
687616
1861
Certo, essa foi a Dica #2.
11:41
Now, Top Tip #3: How to avoid divorce.
220
689477
3253
Agora, Dica #3: Como evitar o divórcio.
11:44
Okay, so let's imagine then
that you picked your perfect partner
221
692730
3138
Certo, imaginemos então
que você escolheu seu parceiro perfeito
11:47
and you're settling into
a lifelong relationship with them.
222
695868
4777
e está se estabelecendo em um
relacionamento vitalício com ele.
11:52
Now, I like to think that everybody
would ideally like to avoid divorce,
223
700645
4074
Eu gosto de pensar que todo mundo,
idealmente, gostaria de evitar o divórcio,
11:56
apart from, I don't know,
Piers Morgan's wife, maybe?
224
704719
4366
sem contar, sei lá,
a esposa de Piers Morgan, talvez?
12:02
But it's a sad fact of modern life
225
710185
2290
Mas é um fato triste da vida moderna
12:04
that 1 in 2 marriages in the
States ends in divorce,
226
712475
3809
que 1 a cada 2 casamentos
nos Estados Unidos acabe em divórcio,
12:08
with the rest of the world
not being far behind.
227
716284
3301
com o resto do mundo
não ficando muito longe.
12:11
Now, you can be forgiven, perhaps
228
719585
2099
Você pode ser perdoado, talvez,
12:13
for thinking that the arguments
that precede a marital breakup
229
721684
3660
por pensar que as discussões
que precedem um rompimento matrimonial
12:17
are not an ideal candidate
for mathematical investigation.
230
725344
3533
não são o candidato ideal
para investigação matemática.
12:20
For one thing, it's very hard to know
231
728877
1900
Por um lado, é muito difícil saber
12:22
what you should be measuring
or what you should be quantifying.
232
730777
3057
o que deveria ser medido
e o que deveria ser quantificado.
12:25
But this didn't stop a psychologist,
John Gottman, who did exactly that.
233
733834
6573
Mas isso não impediu um psicólogo,
John Gottman, que fez exatamente isso.
12:32
Gottman observed hundreds of couples
having a conversation
234
740407
5195
Gottman observou centenas
de casais conversando
12:37
and recorded, well,
everything you can think of.
235
745602
2462
e registrou, bem,
tudo o que podem imaginar.
12:40
So he recorded what was said
in the conversation,
236
748064
2487
Ele registrou o que era dito na conversa,
12:42
he recorded their skin conductivity,
237
750551
2063
registrou a condutividade da pele,
12:44
he recorded their facial expressions,
238
752614
1920
registrou suas expressões faciais,
12:46
their heart rates, their blood pressure,
239
754534
2340
sua frequência cardíaca,
sua pressão sanguínea,
12:48
basically everything apart from whether
or not the wife was actually always right,
240
756874
6450
basicamente tudo, exceto
se a esposa estava mesmo sempre certa,
12:55
which incidentally she totally is.
241
763324
3024
o que, aliás, ela sempre está.
12:58
But what Gottman and his team found
242
766348
2920
Mas o que Gottman e sua equipe descobriram
13:01
was that one of the
most important predictors
243
769268
2504
foi que um dos indicadores
mais importantes
13:03
for whether or not a couple
is going to get divorced
244
771772
2150
de que um casal vai se divorciar ou não
13:05
was how positive or negative each
partner was being in the conversation.
245
773922
5100
foi quão positivo ou negativo
cada parceiro estava sendo na conversa.
13:11
Now, couples that were very low-risk
246
779022
2612
Casais com baixo risco
13:13
scored a lot more positive points
on Gottman's scale than negative.
247
781634
4227
marcaram muito mais pontos positivos
na escala de Gottman do que negativos.
13:17
Whereas bad relationships,
248
785861
2140
Enquanto relacionamentos ruins,
13:20
by which I mean, probably
going to get divorced,
249
788001
2792
com o que quero dizer,
que provavelmente vão se divorciar,
13:22
they found themselves getting
into a spiral of negativity.
250
790793
4612
eles se encontravam entrando
em uma espiral de negatividade.
13:27
Now just by using these very simple ideas,
251
795405
2353
Simplesmente usando
essas ideias bem simples,
13:29
Gottman and his group were able to predict
252
797758
2502
Gottman e sua equipe conseguiram prever
13:32
whether a given couple
was going to get divorced
253
800260
2843
se um determinado casal iria se divorciar
13:35
with a 90 percent accuracy.
254
803103
2655
com uma precisão de 90%.
13:37
But it wasn't until he teamed up
with a mathematician, James Murray,
255
805758
3394
Mas foi só quando ele se juntou
com um matemático, James Murray,
13:41
that they really started to understand
256
809152
2139
que eles realmente começaram a entender
13:43
what causes these negativity spirals
and how they occur.
257
811291
4310
o que causa essas espirais
de negatividade e como elas acontecem.
13:47
And the results that they found
258
815601
1707
E os resultados que encontraram
13:49
I think are just incredibly
impressively simple and interesting.
259
817308
4359
eu acho que são incrivelmente
simples e interessantes.
13:53
So these equations, they predict how
the wife or husband is going to respond
260
821667
4338
Essas equações, elas preveem
como a esposa ou o marido vão reagir
13:58
in their next turn of the conversation,
261
826005
1966
em sua próxima vez na conversa,
13:59
how positive or negative
they're going to be.
262
827971
2128
quão positivos ou negativos eles vão ser.
14:02
And these equations, they depend on
263
830099
1797
E essas equações dependem
14:03
the mood of the person
when they're on their own,
264
831896
2346
do humor da pessoa quando está sozinha,
14:06
the mood of the person when
they're with their partner,
265
834242
2614
o humor da pessoa
quando está com o parceiro,
14:08
but most importantly, they depend on
266
836856
1989
mas mais importante, elas dependem
14:10
how much the husband and wife
influence one another.
267
838845
2979
de como a esposa e o marido
influenciam um ao outro.
14:13
Now, I think it's important
to point out at this stage,
268
841824
2708
Acho que é importante notar nesta etapa,
14:16
that these exact equations
have also been shown
269
844532
3320
que as mesmas equações
também foram provadas
14:19
to be perfectly able at describing
270
847852
2646
perfeitamente capazes de descrever
14:22
what happens between two
countries in an arms race.
271
850498
3758
o que acontece entre dois países
numa corrida armamentista.
14:26
(Laughter)
272
854256
2138
(Risos)
14:30
So that -- an arguing couple
spiraling into negativity
273
858194
3711
Então, um casal discutindo
entrando num funil de negatividade
14:33
and teetering on the brink of divorce --
274
861905
1914
e oscilando à beira do divórcio,
14:35
is actually mathematically equivalent to
the beginning of a nuclear war.
275
863819
4288
é matematicamente equivalente
ao início de uma guerra nuclear.
14:40
(Laughter)
276

(Risos)
14:42
But the really important term
in this equation
277
870606
2553
Mas o termo realmente
importante nessa equação
14:45
is the influence that people
have on one another,
278
873159
2718
é a influência que as pessoas
têm mutuamente,
14:47
and in particular, something called
the negativity threshold.
279
875877
3023
e particularmente, algo chamado de
limiar de negatividade.
14:50
Now, the negativity threshold,
280
878900
1679
O limiar de negatividade,
14:52
you can think of as
how annoying the husband can be
281
880579
4493
vocês podem imaginá-lo como
quão irritante o marido pode ser
14:57
before the wife starts to get
really pissed off, and vice versa.
282
885072
4182
antes de a esposa começar
a ficar irritadíssima, e vice-versa.
15:01
Now, I always thought that good marriages
were about compromise and understanding
283
889254
5154
Eu sempre imaginei que bons casamentos
tratavam-se de abrir mão e compreensão
e permitir que as pessoas tenham
o espaço para serem elas mesmas.
15:06
and allowing the person to
have the space to be themselves.
284
894408
2853
15:09
So I would have thought that perhaps
the most successful relationships
285
897261
3297
E eu teria imaginado que talvez
os relacionamentos mais bem-sucedidos
15:12
were ones where there was
a really high negativity threshold.
286
900558
3466
são os que têm um limiar
de negatividade bem alto.
Onde os casais deixam as coisas para lá
15:16
Where couples let things go
287
904024
1668
15:17
and only brought things up if
they really were a big deal.
288
905692
2795
e só mencionam o que for
realmente um grande problema.
15:20
But actually, the mathematics
and subsequent findings by the team
289
908487
3536
Mas, na verdade, a matemática
e as seguintes descobertas da equipe
15:24
have shown the exact opposite is true.
290
912023
3295
mostraram que exatamente
o oposto é verdade.
15:27
The best couples,
or the most successful couples,
291
915318
2389
Os melhores casais,
os mais bem-sucedidos,
15:29
are the ones with a really low
negativity threshold.
292
917707
3812
são aqueles com um limiar
de negatividade bem baixo.
15:33
These are the couples that don't
let anything go unnoticed
293
921519
3859
Esses são os casais que não deixam
nada passar despercebido
15:37
and allow each other
some room to complain.
294
925378
3021
e deixam ao outro um pouco
de espaço para reclamação.
15:40
These are the couples that are continually
trying to repair their own relationship,
295
928399
5334
São os casais que estão constantemente
tentando consertar seu relacionamento,
que têm uma perspectiva muita mais
positiva em seu casamento.
15:45
that have a much more positive
outlook on their marriage.
296
933733
2685
15:48
Couples that don't let things go
297
936418
2098
Casais que não deixam as coisas para lá
15:50
and couples that don't let trivial things
end up being a really big deal.
298
938516
5910
e casais que não deixam coisas triviais
se tornarem grandes problemas.
15:56
Now of course, it takes bit more than
just a low negativity threshold
299
944426
5597
Mas é claro, é preciso um pouco mais
do que um baixo limiar de negatividade
16:02
and not compromising to
have a successful relationship.
300
950023
4139
e não engolir sapos para ter
um relacionamento bem-sucedido.
16:06
But I think that it's quite interesting
301
954162
2488
Mas eu acho que é bem interessante
16:08
to know that there is really
mathematical evidence
302
956650
2403
saber que há realmente
evidência matemática
para dizer que você não deve
levar sua raiva para o dia seguinte.
16:11
to say that you should never
let the sun go down on your anger.
303
959053
3427
16:14
So those are my top three tips
304
962480
1708
Essas são minhas três melhores dicas
16:16
of how maths can help you
with love and relationships.
305
964188
3195
de como a matemática pode ajudá-lo
no amor e relacionamentos.
16:19
But I hope
that aside from their use as tips,
306
967383
2443
Mas eu espero que,
além de serem úteis como dicas,
16:21
they also give you a little bit of insight
into the power of mathematics.
307
969826
4102
elas também deem uma ideia
do poder da matemática.
Porque para mim, equações
e símbolos não são só uma coisa.
16:25
Because for me, equations
and symbols aren't just a thing.
308
973928
4365
16:30
They're a voice that speaks out
about the incredible richness of nature
309
978293
4826
São uma voz que representa
a incrível riqueza da natureza
16:35
and the startling simplicity
310
983119
1810
e a surpreendente simplicidade
16:36
in the patterns that twist and turn
and warp and evolve all around us,
311
984929
4455
nos padrões que se viram, torcem,
retorcem e evoluem ao nosso redor,
16:41
from how the world works to how we behave.
312
989384
2803
desde como funciona o mundo
até como nos comportamos.
16:44
So I hope that perhaps,
for just a couple of you,
313
992187
2298
Espero que talvez, para alguns de vocês,
16:46
a little bit of insight into
the mathematics of love
314
994485
2441
conhecer um pouco a matemática do amor
16:48
can persuade you to have
a little bit more love for mathematics.
315
996926
3208
possa persuadi-los a ter um pouco mais
de amor pela matemática.
16:52
Thank you.

1000134
1387
Obrigada.
