Imagine you're in a bar, or a club,
0
1370
5750
Imagine que você está em um bar...
Ou em uma boate.
00:19
and you start talking, and after a while,
the question comes up,
1
7120
3010
Você começa a conversar e, então,
surge esta pergunta:
"Com o que você trabalha?"
00:22
"So, what do you do for work?"
2
10130
1870
00:24
And since you think
your job is interesting,
3
12015
2935
Como acha seu trabalho interessante,
00:26
you say, "I'm a mathematician."
(Laughter)
4
14950
4280
responde: "Sou matemático."
(Risos)
Quando a conversa segue, inevitavelmente,
00:31
And inevitably, during that conversation
5
19690
2390
00:34
one of these two phrases come up:
6
22080
3670
aparece uma destas duas frases:
A) "Eu era péssimo em matemática,
mas não era minha culpa.
00:37
A) "I was terrible at math,
but it wasn't my fault.
7
25750
3445
O professor é que era péssimo."
(Risos)
00:41
It's because the teacher
was awful." (Laughter)
8
29195
3418
B) "Mas pra que serve matemática?"
00:44
Or B) "But what is math really for?"
9
32613
2969
(Risos)
00:47
(Laughter)
10
35582
1028
Vou tratar do Caso B.
00:48
I'll now address Case B.
11
36610
2345
00:50
(Laughter)
12
38955
1555
(Risos)
Quando alguém pergunta para que serve
a matemática, ele não quer saber
00:52
When someone asks you what math is for,
they're not asking you
13
40510
4844
quais são as aplicações
das ciências matemáticas.
00:57
about applications
of mathematical science.
14
45354
2849
Ele está perguntando:
01:00
They're asking you,
15
48203
1351
"Por que tive que estudar esta droga
que nunca mais usei na vida?" (Risos)
01:01
why did I have to study that bullshit
I never used in my life again? (Laughter)
16
49554
3931
É isso que está perguntando realmente.
01:05
That's what they're actually asking.
17
53485
2439
Por isto,
01:07
So when mathematicians are asked
what math is for,
18
55924
4200
quando os matemáticos são questionados
para que serve a matemática,
costumamos nos dividir em grupos:
01:12
they tend to fall into two groups:
19
60124
2280
cerca de 54,51% dos matemáticos
vão tomar uma posição de ataque,
01:14
54.51 percent of mathematicians
will assume an attacking position,
20
62404
5335
e 44,77% deles ficarão na defensiva.
01:20
and 44.77 percent of mathematicians
will take a defensive position.
21
68609
4950
Há uma exceção de 0,8%,
na qual eu me incluo.
01:25
There's a strange 0.8 percent,
among which I include myself.
22
73559
3509
Quem são os que atacam?
01:29
Who are the ones that attack?
23
77068
2087
São aqueles matemáticos
que irão te dizer:
01:31
The attacking ones are mathematicians
who would tell you
24
79155
2747
"Esta pergunta não faz sentido,
01:33
this question makes no sense,
25
81902
1947
porque a matemática
tem um significado próprio.
01:35
because mathematics
have a meaning all their own --
26
83849
2748
É um belo edifício que se constrói
com a sua lógica própria,
01:38
a beautiful edifice with its own logic --
27
86597
2547
01:41
and that there's no point
28
89144
1867
e que não precisa que estejam sempre
buscando todas as aplicações possíveis.
01:43
in constantly searching
for all possible applications.
29
91011
2547
Para que serve a poesia?
Para que serve o amor?
01:45
What's the use of poetry?
What's the use of love?
30
93558
2289
Para que serve a própria vida?
Que tipo de pergunta é esta?"
01:47
What's the use of life itself?
What kind of question is that?
31
95847
3061
(Risos)
01:50
(Laughter)
32
98908
1621
Hardy, por exemplo, era um expoente
deste tipo de ataque.
01:52
Hardy, for instance, was a model
of this type of attack.
33
100529
3767
E os que ficam na defensiva vão dizer:
01:56
And those who stand in defense tell you,
34
104296
1946
"Mesmo que você não perceba, amigo,
a matemática está por trás de tudo."
01:58
"Even if you don't realize it, friend,
math is behind everything."
35
106242
4840
(Risos)
02:03
(Laughter)
36
111082
1258
Estes caras sempre vão citar
pontes e computadores.
02:04
Those guys,
37
112340
1878
02:06
they always bring up
bridges and computers.
38
114218
4028
"Se você não sabe matemática,
sua ponte vai desabar."
02:10
"If you don't know math,
your bridge will collapse."
39
118246
2595
(Risos)
02:12
(Laughter)
40
120841
1445
02:14
It's true, computers are all about math.
41
122286
3237
Realmente os computadores
são matemática pura.
E esses caras também
vão dizer que por trás
02:17
And now these guys
have also started saying
42
125523
2485
02:20
that behind information security
and credit cards are prime numbers.
43
128013
5037
da segurança da informação e dos cartões
de créditos estão os números primos.
Estas são as respostas que o seu professor
vai lhe dar se você perguntar.
02:25
These are the answers your math teacher
would give you if you asked him.
44
133710
3669
Ele é do time dos defensivos.
02:29
He's one of the defensive ones.
45
137379
2165
Tudo bem, mas quem está certo então?
02:31
Okay, but who's right then?
46
139544
1840
Os que dizem que a matemática
não precisa ter um propósito,
02:33
Those who say that math
doesn't need to have a purpose,
47
141384
2606
ou os que afirmam que a matemática
está por trás de tudo?
02:35
or those who say that math
is behind everything we do?
48
143990
2859
Na verdade, ambos estão certos.
02:38
Actually, both are right.
49
146849
1671
02:40
But remember I told you
50
148520
1663
Mas lembra que eu disse que pertenço
aos 0,8% que alegam outra coisa?
02:42
I belong to that strange 0.8 percent
claiming something else?
51
150183
3543
Então vá em frente e me pergunte
para que serve a matemática.
02:45
So, go ahead, ask me what math is for.
52
153726
3203
Plateia: "Pra que serve a matemática?"
02:48
Audience: What is math for?
53
156929
2929
Eduardo: Certo, 76,34% perguntaram
para que serve,
02:51
Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón: Okay,
76.34 percent of you asked the question,
54
159858
4815
02:56
23.41 percent didn't say anything,
55
164673
2927
23,41% não falaram nada
e 0,8% que não sei o que está fazendo.
02:59
and the 0.8 percent --
56
167600
1227
03:00
I'm not sure what those guys are doing.
57
168827
2848
Bem, aos meus queridos 76,34%...
03:03
Well, to my dear 76.31 percent --
58
171675
3500
03:07
it's true that math doesn't need
to serve a purpose,
59
175175
4640
É verdade que a matemática
não precisa servir a um propósito.
Realmente ela é
uma estrutura bela, lógica,
03:11
it's true that it's
a beautiful structure, a logical one,
60
179815
2870
03:14
probably one
of the greatest collective efforts
61
182685
2852
provavelmente um dos maiores
esforços coletivos
já realizados na história da humanidade.
03:17
ever achieved in human history.
62
185537
2096
Mas também é verdade que lá,
03:19
But it's also true that there,
63
187633
2099
onde cientistas e técnicos estão à procura
de teorias matemáticas
03:21
where scientists and technicians
are looking for mathematical theories
64
189732
4599
03:26
that allow them to advance,
65
194331
2310
que os permitam avançar, está a estrutura
da matemática que permeia tudo.
03:28
they're within the structure of math,
which permeates everything.
66
196641
3797
É verdade que devemos nos aprofundar
para ver o que está por trás da ciência.
03:32
It's true that we have to go
somewhat deeper,
67
200438
3147
03:35
to see what's behind science.
68
203585
1723
A ciência funciona
através da intuição, da criatividade.
03:37
Science operates on intuition, creativity.
69
205308
3550
E a matemática controla a intuição
e comanda a criatividade.
03:41
Math controls intuition
and tames creativity.
70
209348
3424
Quase todo mundo
que nunca ouviu isto antes
03:45
Almost everyone
who hasn't heard this before
71
213747
2190
se surpreende ao saber
que se você pegar
03:47
is surprised when they hear
that if you take
72
215937
2710
uma folha de papel de 0,1 milímetro
de espessura, das que usamos normalmente,
03:50
a 0.1 millimeter thick sheet of paper,
the size we normally use,
73
218647
4540
e se ela for grande o suficiente
para ser dobrada 50 vezes,
03:55
and, if it were big enough,
fold it 50 times,
74
223187
3318
03:58
its thickness would extend almost
the distance from the Earth to the sun.
75
226505
5700
a sua espessura ocuparia
a distância da Terra até o Sol.
A sua intuição diz que é impossível.
04:04
Your intuition tells you it's impossible.
76
232600
2601
Faça os cálculos
e verá que ela está certa.
04:07
Do the math and you'll see it's right.
77
235201
2421
A matemática serve para isso.
04:09
That's what math is for.
78
237622
2513
É verdade que a ciência, todos os tipos
de ciência, só faz sentido
04:12
It's true that science, all types
of science, only makes sense
79
240135
3782
porque nos ajuda a entender melhor
o belo mundo em que vivemos.
04:15
because it makes us better understand
this beautiful world we live in.
80
243917
3371
E ao fazer isto,
04:19
And in doing that,
81
247288
1381
ela nos ajuda a escapar das armadilhas
deste mundo doloroso em que vivemos.
04:20
it helps us avoid the pitfalls
of this painful world we live in.
82
248669
3510
Há ciências que nos ajudam
nesta direção claramente.
04:24
There are sciences that help us
in this way quite directly.
83
252179
3478
As ciências oncológicas, por exemplo.
04:27
Oncological science, for example.
84
255657
1756
E há outras que olhamos de longe,
com inveja às vezes,
04:29
And there are others we look at from afar,
with envy sometimes,
85
257413
3491
04:32
but knowing that we are
what supports them.
86
260904
2560
mas sabendo que somos o seu suporte.
Todas as ciências básicas
são a base daquelas,
04:35
All the basic sciences
support them,
87
263464
2749
incluindo a matemática.
04:38
including math.
88
266213
2436
Tudo o que faz a ciência
ser ciência é o rigor da matemática.
04:40
All that makes science, science
is the rigor of math.
89
268649
3717
04:44
And that rigor factors in
because its results are eternal.
90
272366
4876
E este rigor existe
porque seus resultados são eternos.
04:49
You probably said or were told
at some point
91
277242
2515
Você já disse ou ouviu dizer,
em algum momento,
que um diamante é eterno, não é?
04:51
that diamonds are forever, right?
92
279757
2951
Isto depende da sua definição de eterno.
04:56
That depends on
your definition of forever!
93
284178
2214
Um teorema, isso sim, é eterno.
04:58
A theorem -- that really is forever.
94
286392
2491
(Risos)
05:00
(Laughter)
95
288883
1251
O teorema de Pitágoras
continua verdadeiro,
05:02
The Pythagorean theorem is still true
96
290134
3352
eu garanto isto, apesar de Pitágoras
estar morto. (Risos)
05:05
even though Pythagoras is dead,
I assure you it's true. (Laughter)
97
293486
3115
Mesmo se o mundo desabasse,
05:08
Even if the world collapsed
98
296601
1345
05:09
the Pythagorean theorem
would still be true.
99
297946
2445
o teorema de Pitágoras
ainda seria verdadeiro.
Onde quer que um par de catetos
e uma boa hipotenusa se reúnam,
05:12
Wherever any two triangle sides
and a good hypotenuse get together
100
300391
4061
(Risos)
05:16
(Laughter)
101
304452
1221
05:17
the Pythagorean theorem goes all out.
It works like crazy.
102
305673
2861
o teorema de Pitágoras estará la,
funcionando como um louco.
(Aplausos)
05:20
(Applause)
103
308534
2821
Bem, nós, matemáticos,
nos dedicamos a fazer teoremas,
05:27
Well, we mathematicians devote ourselves
to come up with theorems.
104
315535
3872
verdades eternas.
05:31
Eternal truths.
105
319407
1736
Mas nem sempre é fácil saber
a diferença entre uma verdade eterna,
05:33
But it isn't always easy to know
the difference between
106
321143
2766
05:35
an eternal truth, or theorem,
and a mere conjecture.
107
323909
2906
um teorema e uma simples hipótese.
05:38
You need proof.
108
326815
3014
Você precisa de uma demonstração.
Por exemplo,
05:41
For example,
109
329829
1767
imagine que eu tenho aqui
um campo grande, enorme, infinito.
05:43
let's say I have a big,
enormous, infinite field.
110
331596
4827
Eu quero cobri-lo com peças iguais
sem deixar espaços.
05:48
I want to cover it with equal pieces,
without leaving any gaps.
111
336423
3709
Eu poderia usar quadrados, não é?
05:52
I could use squares, right?
112
340132
2124
Eu poderia usar triângulos;
círculos não, eles deixam lacunas.
05:54
I could use triangles.
Not circles, those leave little gaps.
113
342256
3966
05:58
Which is the best shape to use?
114
346777
2357
Qual é o melhor formato para usar?
Um que cubra a mesma superfície,
mas com uma borda menor.
06:01
One that covers the same surface,
but has a smaller border.
115
349134
4553
Pappus de Alexandria, no ano 300,
disse que o melhor era usar hexágonos,
06:05
In the year 300, Pappus of Alexandria
said the best is to use hexagons,
116
353687
4709
assim como as abelhas.
06:10
just like bees do.
117
358396
1847
Mas ele não provou.
06:12
But he didn't prove it.
118
360243
1747
O cara disse: "Hexágonos, ótimo!
Vamos com hexágonos!"
06:13
The guy said, "Hexagons, great!
Let's go with hexagons!"
119
361990
2698
06:16
He didn't prove it,
it remained a conjecture.
120
364688
2968
Ele não provou, permaneceu uma hipótese.
"Hexágonos!"
06:19
"Hexagons!"
121
367656
1678
06:21
And the world, as you know,
split into Pappists and anti-Pappists,
122
369334
3630
E o mundo, como você sabe, se dividiu
entre Pappistas e anti-Pappistas,
até que, 1.700 anos depois,
06:24
until 1700 years later
123
372964
5289
06:30
when in 1999, Thomas Hales proved
124
378253
5454
em 1999, Thomas Hales provou
que Pappus e as abelhas estavam certos:
o melhor é usar hexágonos.
06:35
that Pappus and the bees were right --
the best shape to use was the hexagon.
125
383707
4934
E isto se tornou um teorema,
o "teorema da colmeia",
06:40
And that became a theorem,
the honeycomb theorem,
126
388641
2482
que será verdadeiro para todo o sempre.
06:43
that will be true forever and ever,
127
391123
2060
Mais que qualquer diamante
que você tenha. (Risos)
06:45
for longer than any diamond
you may have. (Laughter)
128
393183
3041
06:48
But what happens if we go
to three dimensions?
129
396229
2804
Mas o que acontece se formos
para a terceira dimensão?
Se eu quiser preencher
o espaço com peças iguais,
06:51
If I want to fill the space
with equal pieces,
130
399033
3911
sem deixar lacunas,
06:55
without leaving any gaps,
131
403464
1341
eu posso usar cubos, certo?
06:56
I can use cubes, right?
132
404805
1833
06:58
Not spheres, those leave little gaps.
(Laughter)
133
406638
3356
Esferas não, elas deixam espaços.
(Risos)
07:01
What is the best shape to use?
134
409994
2963
Qual é o melhor formato para usar?
07:04
Lord Kelvin, of the famous
Kelvin degrees and all,
135
412957
4060
Lord Kelvin, do famoso
"graus Kelvin" e tudo mais,
disse que o melhor era usar
um octaedro truncado.
07:09
said that the best was to use
a truncated octahedron
136
417607
5514
(Risos)
07:16
which, as you all know --
137
424791
2716
Que, como todo mundo sabe...
(Risos)
07:19
(Laughter) --
138
427507
1528
07:21
is this thing here!
139
429035
1779
É esta coisa aqui.
07:22
(Applause)
140
430814

(Aplausos)
07:27
Come on.
141
435778
1447
Qual é?
07:30
Who doesn't have a truncated
octahedron at home? (Laughter)
142
438025
2837
Quem não tem um octaedro
truncado em casa? (Risos)
Mesmo de plástico. "Querida, traga
o octaedro truncado, temos visitas!"
07:32
Even a plastic one.
143
440862
1227
07:34
"Honey, get the truncated octahedron,
we're having guests."
144
442089
2757
Todo mundo tem.
(Risos)
07:36
Everybody has one!
(Laughter)
145
444846
1394
Mas Kelvin não provou.
07:38
But Kelvin didn't prove it.
146
446240
2374
Permaneceu uma hipótese,
a "conjectura de Kelvin".
07:40
It remained a conjecture --
Kelvin's conjecture.
147
448614
4041
E o mundo, como você sabe, se dividiu
entre Kelvinistas e anti-Kelvinistas.
07:44
The world, as you know, then split into
Kelvinists and anti-Kelvinists
148
452655
5522
(Risos)
07:50
(Laughter)
149
458177
1422
Até que cento e poucos anos depois...
07:51
until a hundred or so years later,
150
459599
3897
Cento e poucos anos depois,
alguém descobriu uma estrutura melhor.
07:58
someone found a better structure.
151
466203
3869
Weaire e Phelan...
08:02
Weaire and Phelan
found this little thing over here --
152
470917
5109
Weaire e Phelan descobriram
esta coisinha aqui.
(Risos)
08:08
(Laughter) --
153
476026
1639
Esta estrutura, à qual deram
o criativo nome de:
08:09
this structure to which they gave
the very clever name
154
477665
3544
"estrutura de Weaire-Phelan".
08:13
"the Weaire-€“Phelan structure."
155
481209
2166
(Risos)
08:15
(Laughter)
156
483375
2536
Parece uma coisa rara, mas não é tão rara.
08:17
It looks like a strange object,
but it isn't so strange,
157
485911
2657
Também está presente na natureza.
08:20
it also exists in nature.
158
488568
1671
É bem curioso que esta estrutura,
08:22
It's very interesting that this structure,
159
490239
2605
devido a suas propriedades geométricas,
08:24
because of its geometric properties,
160
492844
2193
foi usada para construir o Centro Aquático
para os Jogos Olímpicos de Pequim.
08:27
was used to build the Aquatics Center
for the Beijing Olympic Games.
161
495037
5192
Lá, Michael Phelps ganhou
oito medalhas de ouro
08:32
There, Michael Phelps
won eight gold medals,
162
500969
2745
e se tornou o melhor nadador
de todos os tempos.
08:35
and became the best swimmer of all time.
163
503714
3161
Bom, de todos os tempos
até que apareça alguém melhor, não é?
08:38
Well, until someone better
comes along, right?
164
506875
3741
Assim como a estrutura de Weaire-Phelan
é a melhor até que apareça outra melhor.
08:42
As may happen
with the Weaire-€“Phelan structure.
165
510616
2399
08:45
It's the best
until something better shows up.
166
513015
2618
Mas cuidado! Pois esta tem
uma chance real,
08:47
But be careful, because this one
really stands a chance
167
515633
4592
mesmo que passem cento e poucos anos,
ou mesmo 1.700 anos,
08:52
that in a hundred or so years,
or even if it's in 1700 years,
168
520225
4980
de alguém provar que ela é
o melhor formato possível.
08:57
that someone proves
it's the best possible shape for the job.
169
525205
5398
Então ela se tornará um teorema,
uma verdade para todo o sempre.
09:02
It will then become a theorem,
a truth, forever and ever.
170
530978
4370
Mais que qualquer diamante.
09:07
For longer than any diamond.
171
535348
2954
Então, se você quiser dizer para alguém
09:10
So, if you want to tell someone
172
538837
3730
que o amará por toda a vida,
(Risos)
09:15
that you will love them forever
173
543777
3046
dê-lhe um diamante.
09:18
you can give them a diamond.
174
546823
2067
Mas se você quiser dizer
que o amará para todo o sempre,
09:20
But if you want to tell them
that you'll love them forever and ever,
175
548890
3531
dê-lhe um teorema!
(Risos)
09:24
give them a theorem!
176
552421
1751
09:26
(Laughter)
177
554172
1091
Mas espere um pouco!
09:27
But hang on a minute!
178
555263
2590
Você terá que provar
09:30
You'll have to prove it,
179
558783
1400
que o seu amor não é
apenas uma hipótese.
09:32
so your love doesn't remain
180
560183
2283
09:34
a conjecture.
