Barat Ali Batoor: My desperate journey with a human smuggler

Once a peaceful haven for the Hazaras,
39
135614
2553
Antes, um paraíso tranquilo
para os hazaras,
02:30
it had now turned into the most
dangerous city in Pakistan.
40

agora tinha se tornado
a cidade mais perigosa do Paquistão.
02:35
Hazaras are confined into two small areas,

3575
Os hazaras estão confinados
em duas pequenas áreas,
02:39
and they are marginalized socially,
educationally, and financially.
42
147176

e são marginalizados socialmente,
na educação e financeiramente.
Este é Nadir.

I had known him since my childhood.

02:51
He later died of his injuries.
46

Mais tarde ele morreu
devido aos ferimentos.
02:55
Around 1,600 Hazara members
47
163221
3785
Cerca de 1.600 membros do grupo hazara
02:59
had been killed in various attacks,
48
167006
3623
foram mortos em vários ataques,
03:02
and around 3,000 of them were injured,
49
170629
4898
cerca de 3 mil foram feridos,
03:07
and many of them permanently disabled.
50
175527
3251
e muitos ficaram incapacitados
permanentemente.
03:10
The attacks on the Hazara community
would only get worse,
51
178778
3298
Os ataques à comunidade hazara
só pioravam,
03:14
so it was not surprising
that many wanted to flee.
52
182076
2832
logo, não é de se estranhar
que muitos queriam escapar.
03:16
After Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan,
53
184908
4760
Depois do Afeganistão, Irã, Paquistão,
03:21
Australia is home to the fourth largest
population of Hazaras in the world.
54
189668
6664
a Austrália é a quarta maior
concentração de hazaras no mundo.
Quando veio a hora de deixar o Paquistão,
03:28
When it came time to leave Pakistan,
55
196332
2809
a Austrália parecia ser a melhor escolha.
03:31
Australia seemed the obvious choice.
56
199141
1950
Financeiramente, só um de nós poderia ir,
03:33
Financially, only one of us could leave,
57
201091
1997
03:35
and it was decided that I would go,
58
203088
1858
e ficou decidido que seria eu,
na esperança que, se eu chegasse
ao meu destino, com segurança,
03:36
in the hope that if I arrived
at my destination safely,
59
204946
3353
03:40
I could work to get the rest
of my family to join me later.
60
208299
4992
poderia trabalhar e então trazer
o resto da família para ficarmos juntos.
03:45
We all knew about the risks,
61
213291
1579
Todos nós sabíamos dos riscos
03:46
and how terrifying the journey is,
62
214870
2972
e o quão aterrorizante seria a viagem,
03:49
and I met many people
who lost loved ones at sea.
63
217842
4574
e eu conhecia muita gente
que tinha perdido entes queridos no mar.
03:54
It was a desperate decision to take,
to leave everything behind,
64
222416
4389
Era uma decisão desesperada,
deixar tudo para trás,
03:58
and no one makes this decision easily.
65
226805
2875
e não é fácil tomar esta decisão.
04:01
If I had been able
to simply fly to Australia,
66
229680
2186
Se fosse possível
ir de avião para a Austrália,
04:03
it would have taken me
less than 24 hours.
67
231866
2624
em menos de 24 horas eu chegaria lá.
04:06
But getting a visa was impossible.
68
234490
4086
Mas era impossível conseguir o visto.
04:10
My journey was much longer,
69
238576
2113
Minha viagem foi muito mais longa,
04:12
much more complicated,
70
240689
2254
muito mais complicada,
04:14
and certainly more dangerous,
71
242943
3046
e, certamente, mais perigosa.
04:17
traveling to Thailand by air,
72
245989
2642
Indo para a Tailândia de avião,
04:20
and then by road and boat
to Malaysia and into Indonesia,
73
248631
4798
e depois por estrada e barco
para a Malásia e a Indonésia.
Pagando as pessoas
e os traficantess a viagem toda,
04:25
paying people and smugglers all the way
74
253429
2415
04:27
and spending a lot of time hiding
75
255844
2740
me escondendo a maior parte do tempo
04:30
and a lot of time in fear of being caught.
76
258584
3716
e com medo de ser pego.
04:34
In Indonesia, I joined a group
of seven asylum seekers.
77
262300
4387
Na Indonésia, me juntei a um grupo
de sete pessoas buscando asilo.
04:38
We all shared a bedroom
78
266687
2554
Nós compartilhamos um quarto
04:41
in a town outside of Jakarta called Bogor.
79
269241
3878
numa cidade na periferia
de Jacarta chamada Bogor.
04:45
After spending a week in Bogor,
80
273119
2300
Passada uma semana em Bogor,
04:47
three of my roommates
left for the perilous journey,
81
275419
3449
três dos meus companheiros
partiram para a viagem perigosa,
04:50
and we got the news two days later
82
278868
3832
e, dois dias depois, tivemos notícias
04:54
that a distressed boat sank
in the sea en route to Christmas Island.
83
282700
4806
de que um barco tinha afundado
a caminho da Ilha do Natal.
04:59
We found out that our three roommates --
Nawroz, Jaffar and Shabbir --
84
287506
3761
Ficamos sabendo que nossos companheiros,
Nawroz, Jaffar e Shabbir,
05:03
were also among those.
85
291267
1951
estavam neste barco.
05:05
Only Jaffar was rescued.
86
293218
2438
Só Jaffar se salvou.
05:07
Shabbir and Nawroz were never seen again.
87
295656
3593
Nunca mais vimos Shabbir e Nawroz.
05:11
It made me think,
88
299249
1649
Isto me fez pensar,
05:12
am I doing the right thing?
89
300898
2670
estou agindo certo?
05:15
I concluded I really had
no other choice but to go on.
90
303568
3947
Cheguei à conclusão que não tinha
outra escolha senão ir.
05:19
A few weeks later, we got the call
from the people smuggler
91
307515
3855
Umas semanas mais tarde, recebemos
um telefonema do traficante de pessoas
05:23
to alert us that the boat is ready for us
to commence our sea journey.
92
311370
4690
avisando-nos que um barco estava pronto
para começar nossa viagem.
05:28
Taken in the night towards the main vessel
93
316060
2880
Fomos levados, de noite,
para o nosso barco, em uma lancha.
05:30
on a motorboat,
94
318940
1648
Nós embarcamos em um barco
de pesca velho já lotado.
05:32
we boarded an old fishing boat
that was already overloaded.
95
320588
5015
05:37
There were 93 of us,
96
325603
2090
Éramos 93 pessoas
e ficamos todos abaixo do convés.
05:39
and we were all below deck.
97
327693
1973
Ninguém tinha autorização de subir.
05:41
No one was allowed up on the top.
98
329666
2253
05:43
We all paid 6,000 dollars each
99
331919
3158
Cada um pagou US$ 6 mil
por este trecho da viagem.
05:47
for this part of the trip.
100
335077
2089
A primeira noite e dia
correram sem problemas,
05:49
The first night and day went smoothly,
101
337166
2229
05:51
but by the second night,
the weather turned.
102
339395
3228
mas na segunda noite, o clima mudou.
05:54
Waves tossed the boat around,
and the timbers groaned.
103
342623
4945
As ondas jogavam o barco
e as tábuas gemiam.
05:59
People below deck were crying,
praying, recalling their loved ones.
104
347568
4342
Todos abaixo do convés choravam, rezavam,
lembrando seus entes queridos.
06:03
They were screaming.
105
351910
1742
Eles gritavam.
06:05
It was a terrible moment.
106
353652
2159
Foi um momento terrível.
06:07
It was like a scene from doomsday,
107
355811
3947
Era como uma cena apocalíptica,
06:11
or maybe like one of those scenes
from those Hollywood movies
108
359758
4825
ou, uma dessas cenas
de um filme hollywoodiano,
06:16
that shows that everything
is breaking apart
109
364583
3205
que mostram que tudo
está sendo destruído
06:19
and the world is just ending.
110
367788
2437
e o mundo está acabando.
06:22
It was happening to us for real.
111
370225
2624
Por certo isto aconteceu conosco.
06:24
We didn't have any hope.
112
372849
4343
Tínhamos perdido a esperança.
06:29
Our boat was floating
like a matchbox on the water
113
377192
3528
Nosso barco flutuava
como uma caixa de fósforos na água
06:32
without any control.
114
380720
2136
sem nenhum controle.
06:34
The waves were much higher than our boat,
115
382856
3762
As ondas eram mais altas do que o barco,
06:38
and the water poured in faster
than the motor pumps could take it out.
116
386618
6037
e a água entrava com maior rapidez
do que as bombas conseguiam esvaziar.
06:44
We all lost hope.
117
392655
2856
Perdemos qualquer esperança.
06:47
We thought, this is the end.
118
395511
2439
Pensávamos que era o fim.
Víamos nossas mortes
e eu estava documentando.
06:49
We were watching our deaths,
119
397950
1926
06:51
and I was documenting it.
120
399876
2392
O capitão nos disse
06:54
The captain told us
121
402268
1951
06:56
that we are not going to make it,
122
404219
2367
que não podíamos continuar,
que o barco tinha que retornar.
06:58
we have to turn back the boat.
123
406586
3181
07:01
We went on the deck
124
409767
2067
Fomos para o convés
07:03
and turned our torches on and off
125
411834
2532
e ligamos e desligamos nossas lanternas
para atrair a atenção
de qualquer barco que passasse.
07:06
to attract the attention
of any passing boat.
126
414366
4899
07:11
We kept trying to attract their attention
by waving our life jackets and whistling.
127
419265
7384
Tentávamos atrair atenção abanando
nossos coletes salva-vidas e assobiando.
07:18
Eventually, we made it to a small island.
128
426649
3435
Por fim, chegamos em uma pequena ilha.
07:22
Our boat crashing onto the rocks,
129
430084
3251
Nosso barco bateu nos rochedos,
07:25
I slipped into the water
130
433335
2043
eu caí no mar,
07:27
and destroyed my camera,
whatever I had documented.
131
435378
3647
minha câmera ficou danificada.
07:31
But luckily, the memory card survived.
132
439025
5766
Mas, felizmente,
o cartão de memória sobreviveu.
Era uma floresta densa.
07:36
It was a thick forest.
133
444791
2415
07:39
We all split up into many groups
as we argued over what to do next.
134
447206
5759
Nos dividimos em grupos
para discutir o que fazer.
07:44
We were all scared and confused.
135
452965
2368
Estávamos confusos e com muito medo.
07:47
Then, after spending
the night on the beach,
136
455333
3297
Após uma noite na praia,
07:50
we found a jetty and coconuts.
137
458630
2623
encontramos um cais e cocos.
07:53
We hailed a boat from a nearby resort,
138
461253
2996
Fizemos sinal a um barco
de um parque ali perto,
07:56
and then were quickly handed over
to Indonesian water police.
139
464249
4249
e, logo em seguida, fomos entregues
à polícia marítima da Indonésia.
08:00
At Serang Detention Center,
140
468498
3602
No Centro de Detenção de Serang
08:04
an immigration officer came
and furtively strip-searched us.
141
472100
5058
um oficial de imigração veio
e, furtivamente, nos revistou despidos.
Ele levou nossos celulares e meus US$ 300,
08:09
He took our mobile, my $300 cash,
142

our shoes that we should not
be able to escape,

nossos sapatos e assim
não poderíamos fugir,
08:15
but we kept watching the guards,
checking their movements,
144
483938

mas ficamos vigiando os guardas,
checando seus movimentos
08:21
and around 4 a.m.
when they sat around a fire,
145

eles sentavam em volta de uma fogueira,
08:25
we removed two glass layers
from an outside facing window
146
493842
3554
nós removemos duas vidraças
de uma janela que dava para o lado de fora
08:29
and slipped through.
147
497396

e escapamos.
08:30
We climbed a tree next to an outer wall
that was topped with the shards of glass.
148

Trepamos uma árvore junto ao muro externo
que tinha cacos de vidro no topo.
08:35
We put the pillow on that

Pusemos um travesseiro por cima,
08:38
and wrapped our forearms with bedsheets
150
506043
3530
cobrimos nossos braços com lençóis,
pulamos o muro
08:41
and climbed the wall,
151
509573
2098
e fugimos descalços.
08:43
and we ran away with bare feet.
152

Eu estava livre,

08:53
The only thing I had was the memory card
with the pictures and footage.
156

A única coisa que tinha era o cartão
de memória com as fotos e filmes.

I also decided to stay in Indonesia

Também decidi ficar na Indonésia

09:20
for many years doing nothing

I was lucky.

09:45
Not every asylum seeker is lucky like me.
169

Nem todos que requerem asilo
têm tanta sorte quanto eu tive.
09:49
It is really difficult to live a life

Realmente é difícil viver
com um destino incerto, no limbo.
