ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Esther Perel - Relationship therapist
Psychotherapist Esther Perel is changing the conversation on what it means to be in love and have a fulfilling sex life.

Why you should listen

For the first time in human history, couples aren’t having sex just to have kids; there’s room for sustained desire and long-term sexual relationships. But how? Perel, a licensed marriage and family therapist with a practice in New York, travels the world to help people answer this question. For her research she works across cultures and is fluent in nine languages. She coaches, consults and speaks regularly on erotic intelligence, trauma, sexual honesty and conflict resolution. She is the author of Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic. Her latest work focuses on infidelity: what it is, why happy people do it and how couples can recover from it. She aims to locate this very personal experience within a larger cultural context.

A infidelidade é a traição máxima.

00:12
Why do we cheat?

E por que pessoas felizes traem?
00:16
And why do happy people cheat?
1
4420
2508
E quando dizemos “infidelidade”,
o que exatamente queremos dizer?
00:20
And when we say "infidelity,"
what exactly do we mean?
2
8641
4806
É um caso, uma história de amor,
sexo pago, sala de bate-papo,
00:26
Is it a hookup, a love story,
paid sex, a chat room,
3
14207
6379
uma massagem com final feliz?
00:32
a massage with a happy ending?
4
20586
2039
Por que pensamos que os homens
traem por tédio e medo de intimidade,
00:36
Why do we think that men cheat
out of boredom and fear of intimacy,
5
24356
5138
00:41
but women cheat out of loneliness
and hunger for intimacy?
6
29494
4762
mas as mulheres traem por solidão
e anseio de intimidade?
00:47
And is an affair always
the end of a relationship?
7
35769
4230
E ter um caso extraconjugal sempre causa
o fim de um relacionamento?
Nos últimos dez anos,
tenho viajado pelo mundo
00:53
For the past 10 years,
I have traveled the globe
8
41294
3196
00:56
and worked extensively
with hundreds of couples
9
44490
3045
e trabalhado extensamente
com centenas de casais
abalados pela infidelidade.
00:59
who have been shattered by infidelity.
10
47535
2187
Há um simples ato de transgressão
01:02
There is one simple act of transgression
11
50999
3603
que pode roubar um casal
do seu relacionamento,
01:06
that can rob a couple
of their relationship,
12
54641
4349
da sua felicidade e da sua verdadeira
identidade: um caso extraconjugal.
01:11
their happiness and their
very identity: an affair.
13
59015
4230
E ainda assim, esse ato extremamente comum
é tão pouco compreendido.
01:15
And yet, this extremely common
act is so poorly understood.
14
63903
5214
01:22
So this talk is for anyone
who has ever loved.
15
70593
4631
Portanto, essa palestra
é para quem já amou.
O adultério existe
desde que o casamento foi inventado,
01:29
Adultery has existed
since marriage was invented,
16
77681
3844
assim também como o tabu ao seu redor.
01:33
and so, too, the taboo against it.
17
81525
2545
Na verdade, infidelidade tem a tenacidade
que o casamento consegue apenas invejar,
01:37
In fact, infidelity has a tenacity
that marriage can only envy,
18
85094
5733
01:42
so much so, that this is
the only commandment
19
90827
3458
tanto é que ela é o único mandamento
01:46
that is repeated twice in the Bible:
20
94289
3932
repetido duas vezes na Bíblia:
01:50
once for doing it, and once
just for thinking about it.
21
98221
4104
uma vez por praticá-la,
e outra por pensar sobre ela.
01:54
(Laughter)
22
102349
2246
(Risos)
01:56
So how do we reconcile
what is universally forbidden,
23
104619
4303
Então como reconciliar
o que é universalmente proibido,
02:00
yet universally practiced?
24
108922
2445
ainda que universalmente praticado?
02:05
Now, throughout history, men
practically had a license to cheat
25
113058
4978
Ao longo da história, os homens
praticamente tiveram licença para trair
02:10
with little consequence,
26
118036
2295
com poucas consequências
02:12
and supported by a host
of biological and evolutionary theories
27
120331
4408
e amparada por uma série de teorias
biológicas e evolucionistas
02:16
that justified their need to roam,
28
124739
2576
que justificavam sua necessidade
de sair por aí.
02:19
so the double standard
is as old as adultery itself.
29
127315
3977
Portanto, o duplo padrão é tão antigo
quanto o próprio adultério.
02:24
But who knows what's really going on
under the sheets there, right?
30
132403
5313
Mas quem realmente sabe o que acontece
debaixo dos lençóis, certo?
Porque quando se trata de sexo,
02:29
Because when it comes to sex,
31
137920
1832
o homem é pressionado
a se gabar e exagerar,
02:31
the pressure for men
is to boast and to exaggerate,
32
139776
4163
02:35
but the pressure for women
is to hide, minimize and deny,
33
143939
5545
mas a mulher é pressionada
a esconder, minimizar e negar,
02:41
which isn't surprising when you consider
that there are still nine countries
34
149484
4226
o que não é surpresa se considerarmos
que ainda há nove países
02:45
where women can be killed for straying.
35
153710
2524
onde mulheres podem ser mortas
por ter um caso extraconjugal.
Monogamia costumava ser
ter uma pessoa por toda a vida.
02:49
Now, monogamy used to be
one person for life.
36
157825
4595
Agora, monogamia é ter uma pessoa por vez.
02:54
Today, monogamy is one person at a time.
37
162912
2603
(Risos)
02:58
(Laughter)
38
166268
1865
(Aplausos)
03:00
(Applause)
39
168158
1865
Quero dizer, muitos aqui já disseram:
03:04
I mean, many of you probably have said,
40
172364
1936
03:06
"I am monogamous in all my relationships."
41
174300
2588
“Sou monogâmico
em todos os meus relacionamentos.”
(Risos)
03:09
(Laughter)
42
177460
2403
03:12
We used to marry,
43
180617
1643
Costumávamos casar
03:14
and had sex for the first time.
44
182260
1909
e fazer sexo pela primeira vez,
mas agora nós casamos,
03:16
But now we marry,
45
184614
1462
03:18
and we stop having sex with others.
46
186076
1927
e paramos de ter sexo com outras pessoas.
O fato é que monogamia
nada tem a ver com amor.
03:21
The fact is that monogamy
had nothing to do with love.
47
189455
4222
Os homens confiavam
na fidelidade das mulheres
03:26
Men relied on women's fidelity
48
194332
2563
03:28
in order to know whose children these are,
49
196919
3040
para saber a origem dos filhos,
03:31
and who gets the cows when I die.
50
199959
2341
e quem herdaria seus bens ao morrer.
03:36
Now, everyone wants to know
51
204205
2450
Agora, todo mundo quer saber
qual o percentual que trai.
03:38
what percentage of people cheat.
52
206655
1748
As pessoas têm me perguntado isso
desde que cheguei na conferência.
03:40
I've been asked that question
since I arrived at this conference.
53
208403
3231
03:43
(Laughter)
54
211658
2578
(Risos)
03:46
It applies to you.
55
214260
1380
Isso se aplica a vocês.
Mas a definição de infidelidade
continua se expandindo:
03:48
But the definition of infidelity
keeps on expanding:
56
216466
4493
03:52
sexting, watching porn, staying
secretly active on dating apps.
57
220959
5062
"sexting", assistir pornografia, ser ativo
em aplicativos de namoro secretamente.
Então por não haver uma definição
universalmente consensual
03:58
So because there is no
universally agreed-upon definition
58
226332
4485
04:02
of what even constitutes an infidelity,
59
230817
3139
do que constitui uma infidelidade,
04:05
estimates vary widely,
from 26 percent to 75 percent.
60
233956
5630
a estimativa varia amplamente,
de 26% a 75%.
Mas além disso,
somos contradições ambulantes.
04:12
But on top of it, we are
walking contradictions.
61
240728
3231
E 95% de nós dirão
que é terrivelmente errado
04:16
So 95 percent of us will say
that it is terribly wrong
62
244173
3619
04:19
for our partner to lie
about having an affair,
63
247792
3177
nossos parceiros mentirem
sobre ter um caso extraconjugal,
04:22
but just about the same
amount of us will say
64
250969
2221
mas quase o mesmo tanto de nós dirá
04:25
that that's exactly what we
would do if we were having one.
65
253214
3134
que isso é exatamente o que faríamos
se estivéssemos tendo um caso.
04:28
(Laughter)
66
256372
2436
(Risos)
04:31
Now, I like this definition
of an affair --
67
259872
3705
Eu gosto dessa definição de ter um caso,
04:35
it brings together the three key elements:
68
263577
3749
ela junta os três elementos-chave:
04:39
a secretive relationship,
which is the core structure of an affair;
69
267326
5706
uma relação secreta, que é o centro
estrutural de um caso extraconjugal;
04:45
an emotional connection
to one degree or another;
70
273032
4794
uma conexão emocional em qualquer grau;
04:49
and a sexual alchemy.
71
277826
1640
e uma alquimia sexual.
E alquimia é a palavra-chave aqui,
04:52
And alchemy is the key word here,
72
280355
2982
04:55
because the erotic frisson is such that
the kiss that you only imagine giving,
73
283337
6928
porque o frisson erótico é tal
que o beijo que você apenas imagina dar,
05:02
can be as powerful and as enchanting
74
290265
3084
pode ser tão poderoso e encantador
05:05
as hours of actual lovemaking.
75
293349
2490
quanto horas de relação sexual real.
Como Marcel Proust disse:
05:09
As Marcel Proust said,
76
297759
1556
"Nossa imaginação é a responsável
pelo amor, não a outra pessoa."
05:11
it's our imagination that is responsible
for love, not the other person.
77
299340
5300
Então nunca foi tão fácil trair,
05:17
So it's never been easier to cheat,
78
305902
3856
05:21
and it's never been more
difficult to keep a secret.
79
309762
3473
e nunca foi tão difícil manter um segredo.
E nunca a infidelidade demandou
um custo psicológico tão alto.
05:25
And never has infidelity exacted
such a psychological toll.
80
313999
4460
05:31
When marriage was an economic enterprise,
81
319975
3367
Quando o casamento
era um empreendimento econômico,
05:35
infidelity threatened
our economic security.
82
323342
2966
a infidelidade ameaçava
nossa segurança econômica.
Mas agora que o casamento
é um acordo romântico,
05:39
But now that marriage
is a romantic arrangement,
83
327083
2876
05:41
infidelity threatens
our emotional security.
84
329959
3820
a infidelidade ameaça
nossa segurança emocional.
Ironicamente, costumávamos
nos voltar para o adultério.
05:45
Ironically, we used to turn to adultery --
85
333779
4261
05:50
that was the space where
we sought pure love.
86
338040
3229
Aquele era o espaço
em que procurávamos o amor puro.
Mas agora que procuramos
amor no casamento,
05:53
But now that we seek love in marriage,
87
341293
2189
05:55
adultery destroys it.
88
343482
1660
o adultério o destrói.
05:58
Now, there are three ways that I think
infidelity hurts differently today.
89
346943
4404
Existem três maneiras que a infidelidade
machuca de modo diferente atualmente.
06:05
We have a romantic ideal
in which we turn to one person
90
353800
5813
Temos um ideal romântico
no qual contamos com uma pessoa
06:11
to fulfill an endless list of needs:
91
359613
3197
para preencher uma lista
infindável de necessidades:
06:14
to be my greatest lover, my best friend,
92
362810
3600
de ser o melhor amante, o melhor amigo,
06:18
the best parent, my trusted confidant,
93
366410
3153
o melhor pai ou mãe, o confidente fiel,
06:21
my emotional companion,
my intellectual equal.
94
369563
3094
companheiro emocional, par intelectual.
06:25
And I am it: I'm chosen, I'm unique,
95
373625
4304
E eu sou isso: sou a escolhida, a única,
06:29
I'm indispensable, I'm irreplaceable,
96
377929
3316
indispensável, insubstituível,
06:33
I'm the one.
97
381245
1190
eu sou a pessoa certa.
E a infidelidade me diz que não sou.
06:35
And infidelity tells me I'm not.
98
383356
3158
Ela é a traição máxima.
06:39
It is the ultimate betrayal.
99
387308
1889
06:41
Infidelity shatters
the grand ambition of love.
100
389999
3126
A infidelidade destrói
a grande ambição do amor.
06:46
But if throughout history,
infidelity has always been painful,
101
394680
4881
Mas se ao longo da história,
a infidelidade sempre foi dolorosa,
06:51
today it is often traumatic,
102
399561
2358
hoje ela é quase sempre traumática,
06:53
because it threatens our sense of self.
103
401919
2801
porque ameaça nossa autoestima.
Fernando, meu paciente, está atormentado.
06:57
So my patient Fernando, he's plagued.
104
405054
2769
06:59
He goes on: "I thought I knew my life.
105
407847
2748
Ele diz: “Pensei que conhecia minha vida.
07:02
I thought I knew who you were,
who we were as a couple, who I was.
106
410595
4206
Pensei que sabia quem você era,
quem éramos como casal, quem eu era.
07:06
Now, I question everything."
107
414801
2221
Agora questiono tudo.”
A infidelidade, uma violação de confiança,
uma crise de identidade.
07:09
Infidelity -- a violation of trust,
a crisis of identity.
108
417632
5187
07:14
"Can I ever trust you again?" he asks.
109
422819
2305
“Poderei confiar em você de novo?”,
ele pergunta.
“Poderei confiar em alguém novamente?”
07:17
"Can I ever trust anyone again?"
110
425148
2302
07:20
And this is also what my patient
Heather is telling me,
111
428824
3081
E é isso que minha paciente Heather me diz
07:23
when she's talking to me
about her story with Nick.
112
431905
2627
quando conversamos
sobre sua história com Nick.
07:26
Married, two kids.
113
434532
1450
Casada, dois filhos.
07:27
Nick just left on a business trip,
114
435982
2677
Nick acabou de viajar a trabalho,
07:30
and Heather is playing
on his iPad with the boys,
115
438659
3531
e Heather está brincando com o iPad dele
junto com os meninos,
07:34
when she sees a message
appear on the screen:
116
442190
2937
quando vê uma mensagem surgir na tela:
“Mal posso esperar para te ver.”
07:37
"Can't wait to see you."
117
445127
1538
Ela pensa: "Estranho,
acabamos de nos ver."
07:39
Strange, she thinks,
we just saw each other.
118
447625
2429
E então outra mensagem:
07:42
And then another message:
119
450863
1516
"Mal posso esperar para abraçá-la.”
07:44
"Can't wait to hold you in my arms."
120
452903
2237
E Heather entende
07:47
And Heather realizes
121
455999
2244
que as mensagens não são para ela.
07:50
these are not for her.
122
458243
1368
Ela também me diz que seu pai teve casos,
07:52
She also tells me
that her father had affairs,
123
460435
3373
07:55
but her mother, she found
one little receipt in the pocket,
124
463812
3941
mas a mãe dela encontrou
um pequeno recibo no bolso,
07:59
and a little bit of lipstick
on the collar.
125
467777
2158
e um pouco de batom no colarinho.
08:03
Heather, she goes digging,
126
471221
3389
Heather vai remexendo,
08:06
and she finds hundreds of messages,
127
474610
3063
e encontra centenas de mensagens,
08:09
and photos exchanged
and desires expressed.
128
477673
3413
e troca de fotos e desejos explícitos.
Detalhes vívidos do caso extraconjugal
de dois anos de Nick
08:13
The vivid details
of Nick's two-year affair
129
481420
2698
08:16
unfold in front of her in real time,
130
484118
3182
desvendam-se a sua frente, em tempo real.
E isso me fez pensar:
08:19
And it made me think:
131
487999
1273
08:21
Affairs in the digital age
are death by a thousand cuts.
132
489272
5046
caso extraconjugal na era digital
é a morte por milhares de cortes.
08:27
But then we have another paradox
that we're dealing with these days.
133
495854
3259
Mas então há outro paradoxo
que lidamos atualmente.
08:31
Because of this romantic ideal,
134
499113
2304
Por causa desse ideal romântico,
08:33
we are relying on our partner's
fidelity with a unique fervor.
135
501417
5058
confiamos na fidelidade
do nosso companheiro com um fervor único.
Mas também nunca estivemos
tão inclinados a ter casos,
08:38
But we also have never
been more inclined to stray,
136
506999
3545
08:42
and not because we have new desires today,
137
510544
2711
e não é por termos novos desejos agora,
08:45
but because we live in an era
138
513255
1746
mas porque vivemos em uma era
08:47
where we feel that we are
entitled to pursue our desires,
139
515001
3681
em que nos sentimos no direito
de ir em busca dos nossos desejos,
08:50
because this is the culture
where I deserve to be happy.
140
518682
3456
pois essa é a cultura
em que mereço ser feliz.
E se costumávamos nos divorciar
por estarmos infelizes,
08:55
And if we used to divorce
because we were unhappy,
141
523268
3763
08:59
today we divorce
because we could be happier.
142
527035
2829
hoje nos divorciamos
porque poderíamos estar mais felizes.
E se o divórcio carregava toda a vergonha,
09:03
And if divorce carried all the shame,
143
531562
3285
09:06
today, choosing to stay when you can leave
144
534847
3891
hoje, escolher ficar quando você
pode partir é a nova vergonha.
09:10
is the new shame.
145
538738
1364
Então Heather não consegue
contar para os amigos
09:12
So Heather, she can't talk to her friends
146
540657
2511
09:15
because she's afraid that they
will judge her for still loving Nick,
147
543168
3261
porque tem medo de que a julguem
por ainda amar Nick,
09:18
and everywhere she turns,
she gets the same advice:
148
546429
3548
e em qualquer lugar que vá,
ela recebe o mesmo conselho:
09:21
Leave him. Throw the dog on the curb.
149
549977
2625
"Deixe-o", “Dê o fora nele”.
09:25
And if the situation were reversed,
Nick would be in the same situation.
150
553744
4993
E se a situação fosse inversa,
Nick estaria na mesma situação.
Ficar é a nova vergonha.
09:31
Staying is the new shame.
151
559070
2294
Então se podemos nos divorciar,
09:35
So if we can divorce,
152
563395
2964
09:38
why do we still have affairs?
153
566359
2096
porque ainda temos casos amorosos?
09:41
Now, the typical assumption
is that if someone cheats,
154
569999
4564
A suposição típica é que se alguém trai,
09:46
either there's something wrong
in your relationship or wrong with you.
155
574563
3845
é porque há algo de errado
em seu relacionamento ou com você.
09:51
But millions of people
can't all be pathological.
156
579440
3246
Mas não há como milhões de pessoas
serem todas casos patológicos.
09:56
The logic goes like this: If you
have everything you need at home,
157
584383
3908
A lógica segue assim:
se você tem tudo que precisa em casa,
10:00
then there is no need
to go looking elsewhere,
158
588291
3424
então não há necessidade
de procurar em outro lugar,
10:03
assuming that there is such
a thing as a perfect marriage
159
591715
3467
supondo que existe algo
como um casamento perfeito
10:07
that will inoculate us against wanderlust.
160
595187
2851
que irá nos imunizar
contra o desejo de aventuras.
10:11
But what if passion
has a finite shelf life?
161
599165
3334
Mas e se a paixão tem prazo de validade?
10:15
What if there are things
that even a good relationship
162
603624
3714
E se há coisas que mesmo
um bom relacionamento
10:19
can never provide?
163
607338
1405
não consegue suprir?
10:22
If even happy people cheat,
164
610187
3015
Se até pessoas felizes traem,
então, de que se trata isso?
10:25
what is it about?
165
613202
1596
10:28
The vast majority of people
that I actually work with
166
616765
2876
A grande maioria das pessoas
com quem eu trabalho
10:31
are not at all chronic philanderers.
167
619641
2784
não é de paqueradores crônicos.
10:34
They are often people who are
deeply monogamous in their beliefs,
168
622429
4046
São quase sempre pessoas
profundamente monogâmicas em suas crenças,
10:38
and at least for their partner.
169
626475
1573
ao menos para seus parceiros.
10:40
But they find themselves in a conflict
170
628865
2636
Mas encontram-se em conflito
10:43
between their values and their behavior.
171
631501
3039
entre seus valores e comportamentos.
10:47
They often are people who have
actually been faithful for decades,
172
635572
4363
Geralmente são pessoas fiéis por décadas,
10:51
but one day they cross a line
173
639935
2639
mas um dia elas cruzam a linha
10:54
that they never thought they would cross,
174
642574
2473
que nunca imaginaram que iriam cruzar,
10:57
and at the risk of losing everything.
175
645047
2747
correndo o risco de perder tudo.
11:00
But for a glimmer of what?
176
648730
1905
Mas por uma faísca de quê?
11:03
Affairs are an act of betrayal,
177
651969
2640
Ter um caso extraconjugal
é um ato de traição,
11:06
and they are also an expression
of longing and loss.
178
654609
3096
e também uma expressão de desejo e perda.
11:10
At the heart of an affair,
you will often find
179
658610
3918
No centro de um caso extraconjugal
geralmente encontramos
11:14
a longing and a yearning
for an emotional connection,
180
662528
4261
um desejo e um anseio
por uma conexão emocional,
11:18
for novelty, for freedom,
for autonomy, for sexual intensity,
181
666789
5770
por novidade, liberdade,
autonomia, intensidade sexual,
11:24
a wish to recapture
lost parts of ourselves
182
672559
3667
um desejo de recapturar
partes perdidas de nós mesmos,
11:28
or an attempt to bring back
vitality in the face of loss and tragedy.
183
676226
5314
ou uma tentativa de resgatar a vitalidade
em face da perda e da tragédia.
Estou pensando em outra paciente, Priya,
11:34
I'm thinking about
another patient of mine, Priya,
184
682849
2917
11:37
who is blissfully married,
185
685766
2616
que é feliz no casamento,
11:40
loves her husband,
186
688382
1465
ama o marido,
11:41
and would never want to hurt the man.
187
689847
2383
e jamais iria querer magoá-lo.
Mas ela também me disse
11:44
But she also tells me
188
692713
2118
11:46
that she's always done
what was expected of her:
189
694831
3174
que sempre fez o que esperavam dela:
11:50
good girl, good wife, good mother,
190
698005
3680
boa menina, boa esposa, boa mãe,
11:53
taking care of her immigrant parents.
191
701685
2992
cuidando dos pais imigrantes.
11:56
Priya, she fell for the arborist
who removed the tree from her yard
192
704677
4512
Priya se apaixonou pelo jardineiro
que retirou a árvore do seu jardim
12:01
after Hurricane Sandy.
193
709214
1461
depois do furacão Sandy.
12:03
And with his truck and his tattoos,
he's quite the opposite of her.
194
711524
4563
E com seu caminhão e tatuagens,
ele é o oposto dela.
Mas aos 47 anos, o caso de Priya tem a ver
com a adolescência que ela não teve.
12:09
But at 47, Priya's affair is about
the adolescence that she never had.
195
717547
5222
12:15
And her story highlights for me
that when we seek the gaze of another,
196
723753
5277
Acho que a história dela ressalta
que quando buscamos o olhar do outro,
12:21
it isn't always our partner
that we are turning away from,
197
729030
4718
nem sempre estamos virando
as costas ao companheiro,
12:25
but the person that
we have ourselves become.
198
733748
2837
mas sim à pessoa que nos tornamos.
12:29
And it isn't so much that we're
looking for another person,
199
737728
3546
E nem estamos buscando uma outra pessoa,
12:33
as much as we are
looking for another self.
200
741274
3542
tanto quanto buscamos
um outro de nós mesmos.
12:39
Now, all over the world,
201
747045
1557
Em todo o mundo,
12:40
there is one word that people
who have affairs always tell me.
202
748602
3856
há uma palavra que as pessoas
que tem casos sempre me dizem.
Elas se sentem vivas.
12:45
They feel alive.
203
753030
1881
12:48
And they often will tell me
stories of recent losses --
204
756046
4240
E geralmente me contam histórias
de perdas recentes,
12:52
of a parent who died,
205
760286
1855
da morte de um dos pais,
12:54
and a friend that went too soon,
206
762141
2200
e de um amigo que morreu antes do tempo,
12:56
and bad news at the doctor.
207
764341
1800
e más notícias de saúde.
12:59
Death and mortality often live
in the shadow of an affair,
208
767482
4656
Morte e mortalidade geralmente vivem
à sombra de uma traição,
13:04
because they raise these questions.
209
772138
2470
porque suscitam essas questões.
É só isso? Existe algo além?
13:06
Is this it? Is there more?
210
774632
2904
Vou viver mais 25 anos assim?
13:09
Am I going on for another
25 years like this?
211
777901
3056
13:13
Will I ever feel that thing again?
212
781870
2492
Será que sentirei aquilo outra vez?
13:18
And it has led me to think
that perhaps these questions
213
786377
4411
E isso me levou a pensar
que talvez essas questões
13:22
are the ones that propel
people to cross the line,
214
790788
3159
sejam as que impulsionam
as pessoas a cruzar a linha,
13:25
and that some affairs are
an attempt to beat back deadness,
215
793947
3992
e também que alguns casos sejam
uma tentativa de driblar a mortalidade,
13:29
in an antidote to death.
216
797939
1796
como um antídoto para a morte.
13:33
And contrary to what you may think,
217
801999
2868
E contrário ao que possam pensar,
13:36
affairs are way less about sex,
and a lot more about desire:
218
804867
5036
ter um caso tem a ver menos com sexo,
e bem mais com desejo:
13:41
desire for attention,
desire to feel special,
219
809903
3489
desejo de atenção,
desejo de se sentir especial,
13:45
desire to feel important.
220
813392
1916
de se sentir importante.
E a própria estrutura
de um caso extraconjugal,
13:48
And the very structure of an affair,
221
816237
3010
13:51
the fact that you can
never have your lover,
222
819247
2252
o fato de você não poder ter o seu amante,
13:53
keeps you wanting.
223
821503
1435
mantém o desejo.
13:54
That in itself is a desire machine,
224
822938
3021
É uma máquina de desejo,
13:57
because the incompleteness, the ambiguity,
225
825959
2788
porque a incompletude, a ambiguidade,
14:00
keeps you wanting
that which you can't have.
226
828747
2775
te mantém querendo o que não pode ter.
14:05
Now some of you probably think
227
833641
1536
Alguns de vocês devem pensar
14:07
that affairs don't happen
in open relationships,
228
835177
3630
que traições não acontecem
em relações abertas,
14:10
but they do.
229
838807
1191
mas acontecem sim.
Primeiramente, a conversa
sobre monogamia não é a mesma
14:12
First of all, the conversation
about monogamy is not the same
230
840432
3130
14:15
as the conversation about infidelity.
231
843562
2181
que a conversa sobre infidelidade.
14:18
But the fact is that it seems
that even when we have
232
846468
3491
Mas o fato é que parece
que mesmo quando temos
14:21
the freedom to have other sexual partners,
233
849959
2673
a liberdade de ter
outros parceiros sexuais,
14:24
we still seem to be lured
by the power of the forbidden,
234
852632
4088
ainda parece que somos atraídos
pelo poder do proibido,
de que se fazemos o que não deveríamos,
14:28
that if we do that which
we are not supposed to do,
235
856720
3487
14:32
then we feel like we are really
doing what we want to.
236
860207
2799
então nos sentimos fazendo
o que realmente queremos.
14:37
And I've also told
quite a few of my patients
237
865331
3604
Eu também disse a muitos pacientes
que se eles pudessem trazer
para seus relacionamentos
14:40
that if they could bring
into their relationships
238
868935
4601
um décimo da ousadia,
imaginação e vivacidade
14:45
one tenth of the boldness,
the imagination and the verve
239
873536
3631
que colocam em seus casos extraconjugais,
14:49
that they put into their affairs,
240
877167
1712
14:50
they probably would never need to see me.
241
878879
2245
eles provavelmente jamais
precisariam de mim.
14:53
(Laughter)
242
881148
2000
(Risos)
14:56
So how do we heal from an affair?
243
884362
2285
Então como nos curamos de uma traição?
O desejo é algo profundo.
15:00
Desire runs deep.
244
888428
1919
A traição é algo profundo.
15:02
Betrayal runs deep.
245
890371
1871
15:05
But it can be healed.
246
893266
1555
Mas pode ser curada.
15:07
And some affairs are death knells
247
895999
2921
E algumas traições
são uma sentença de morte
15:10
for relationships that were
already dying on the vine.
248
898944
2738
para relacionamentos
que já estavam morrendo aos poucos.
15:14
But others will jolt us
into new possibilities.
249
902753
3016
Mas outras nos levarão
a novas possibilidades.
O fato é que a maioria dos casais
15:17
The fact is, the majority of couples
250
905953
1983
15:19
who have experienced
affairs stay together.
251
907936
2214
que vivenciam traições continuam juntos.
Mas alguns irão apenas sobreviver,
15:22
But some of them will merely survive,
252
910766
2633
15:25
and others will actually be able
to turn a crisis into an opportunity.
253
913399
4704
e outros serão realmente capazes
de fazer da crise uma oportunidade.
Eles serão capazes de fazer disso
uma experiência criadora.
15:30
They'll be able to turn this
into a generative experience.
254
918817
3643
E penso que mais ainda
para o parceiro traído,
15:34
And I'm actually thinking even
more so for the deceived partner,
255
922484
3714
que geralmente diz:
15:38
who will often say,
256
926222
1336
15:39
"You think I didn't want more?
257
927558
1807
“Pensa que eu não queria mais?
Mas não sou o que traiu.”
15:41
But I'm not the one who did it."
258
929365
1842
Agora que o caso foi descoberto,
15:43
But now that the affair is exposed,
259
931968
2142
15:46
they, too, get to claim more,
260
934110
2134
eles também começam a exigir mais,
15:48
and they no longer have
to uphold the status quo
261
936244
2642
e não precisam mais sustentar a condição
que também não funcionava bem para eles.
15:50
that may not have been working
for them that well, either.
262
938886
2914
Reparo que muitos casais,
15:56
I've noticed that a lot of couples,
263
944221
2889
15:59
in the immediate aftermath of an affair,
264
947110
2141
logo após o acerto de contas
de uma traição,
16:01
because of this new disorder
that may actually lead to a new order,
265
949251
4336
por causa dessa nova desordem
que talvez leve a uma nova ordem,
16:05
will have depths of conversations
with honesty and openness
266
953587
3582
terão conversas profundas
com honestidade e abertura
16:09
that they haven't had in decades.
267
957169
1655
que não tinham há décadas.
E parceiros que estavam
sexualmente indiferentes
16:11
And, partners who were
sexually indifferent
268
959743
2937
16:14
find themselves suddenly
so lustfully voracious,
269
962680
2599
se veem subitamente tão vorazes de luxúria
16:17
they don't know where it's coming from.
270
965279
2535
que não sabem de onde ela vem.
16:20
Something about the fear
of loss will rekindle desire,
271
968568
3953
Algo sobre o medo da perda
reacende o desejo,
16:24
and make way for an entirely
new kind of truth.
272
972521
3319
e abre caminho para um tipo de verdade
inteiramente novo.
16:30
So when an affair is exposed,
273
978133
2871
Então quando uma traição é descoberta,
16:33
what are some of the specific things
that couples can do?
274
981004
3161
quais são algumas das coisas específicas
que os casais podem fazer?
16:38
We know from trauma that healing begins
275
986133
4071
Através do trauma
sabemos que a cura começa
16:42
when the perpetrator
acknowledges their wrongdoing.
276
990204
3992
quando o traidor admite seus erros.
16:47
So for the partner who had the affair,
277
995339
3711
Então para o parceiro que teve o caso,
16:51
for Nick,
278
999050
1532
para Nick,
16:52
one thing is to end the affair,
279
1000582
1805
uma coisa é terminar o caso,
16:54
but the other is the essential,
important act of expressing
280
1002387
4722
mas a outra é o ato importante
e essencial de expressar
culpa e remorso por magoar sua esposa.
16:59
guilt and remorse for hurting his wife.
281
1007109
3206
Mas a verdade
17:02
But the truth is
282
1010889
1375
17:04
that I have noticed that quite a lot
of people who have affairs
283
1012264
3101
é que noto que muitas pessoas
que tem casos extraconjugais
17:07
may feel terribly guilty
for hurting their partner,
284
1015365
3098
podem se sentir terrivelmente culpadas
por magoar seus parceiros,
17:10
but they don't feel guilty
for the experience of the affair itself.
285
1018463
3213
mas não se sentem culpadas
pela experiência em si.
E essa distinção é importante.
17:14
And that distinction is important.
286
1022135
1841
17:17
And Nick, he needs to hold
vigil for the relationship.
287
1025230
3626
E Nick precisa ficar vigilante
em seu relacionamento.
Ele precisa se tornar, por um tempo,
o protetor dos limites.
17:21
He needs to become, for a while,
the protector of the boundaries.
288
1029253
3073
17:24
It's his responsibility to bring it up,
289
1032326
2623
É sua responsabilidade fazê-lo,
17:26
because if he thinks about it,
290
1034949
1980
porque se ele pensa sobre isso,
17:28
he can relieve Heather from the obsession,
291
1036929
3010
pode aliviar Heather da obsessão,
17:31
and from having to make sure
that the affair isn't forgotten,
292
1039939
3210
e de ter que assegurar
que o caso não foi esquecido,
17:35
and that in itself
begins to restore trust.
293
1043149
3183
e isso por si só,
começa a restaurar a confiança.
17:39
But for Heather,
294
1047570
1859
Mas para Heather,
17:41
or deceived partners,
295
1049429
1745
ou companheiros traídos,
17:43
it is essential to do things
that bring back a sense of self-worth,
296
1051174
5338
é essencial fazer coisas que resgatem
um senso de autovalorização,
17:48
to surround oneself with love
and with friends and activities
297
1056512
3733
cercando-se de amor, amigos e atividades
17:52
that give back joy
and meaning and identity.
298
1060249
3403
que resgatem a alegria,
o significado e a identidade.
Mas mais importante ainda,
17:55
But even more important,
299
1063936
1933
17:57
is to curb the curiosity
to mine for the sordid details --
300
1065869
4903
é frear a curiosidade
por detalhes sórdidos.
18:02
Where were you? Where did you do it?
301
1070772
2197
Onde você estava? Onde você fez isso?
18:04
How often? Is she better
than me in bed? --
302
1072969
3022
Com que frequência?
Ela é melhor do que eu na cama?
18:07
questions that only inflict more pain,
303
1075991
2484
Perguntas que apenas causam mais dor,
e te mantêm acordado à noite.
18:10
and keep you awake at night.
304
1078475
1484
Em vez disso, mude para o que chamo
de perguntas investigativas,
18:12
And instead, switch to what I call
the investigative questions,
305
1080674
4676
18:17
the ones that mine
the meaning and the motives --
306
1085350
3300
as que minam o significado e motivos.
18:20
What did this affair mean for you?
307
1088654
2473
"O que esse caso significou para você?"
18:23
What were you able to express
or experience there
308
1091127
2772
"O que você era capaz de expressar
ou vivenciar lá
18:25
that you could no longer do with me?
309
1093899
2255
que não podia mais comigo?"
18:28
What was it like for you
when you came home?
310
1096154
3032
"Como você se sentia ao voltar para casa?"
18:31
What is it about us that you value?
311
1099186
3399
"O que você valoriza a nosso respeito?"
18:34
Are you pleased this is over?
312
1102585
2152
"Está contente que isso terminou?"
18:38
Every affair will redefine a relationship,
313
1106404
4321
Cada caso extraconjugal
redefinirá uma relação,
18:42
and every couple will determine
314
1110725
2882
e cada casal determinará
18:45
what the legacy of the affair will be.
315
1113607
2535
qual será o legado da traição.
18:49
But affairs are here to stay,
and they're not going away.
316
1117649
3762
Mas as traições chegaram para ficar,
e não irão embora.
18:54
And the dilemmas of love and desire,
317
1122316
2643
E os dilemas do amor e desejo
18:56
they don't yield just simple answers
of black and white and good and bad,
318
1124959
5970
não suscitam apenas simples perguntas
de preto no branco, bom e mau,
19:02
and victim and perpetrator.
319
1130929
1974
e vítima e traidor.
19:06
Betrayal in a relationship
comes in many forms.
320
1134221
4075
A traição em um relacionamento
vem de várias formas.
19:10
There are many ways
that we betray our partner:
321
1138296
2354
Há muitos modos de trair o parceiro:
19:12
with contempt, with neglect,
322
1140650
2169
com desprezo, com negligência,
19:14
with indifference, with violence.
323
1142819
2473
com indiferença, com violência.
19:17
Sexual betrayal is only
one way to hurt a partner.
324
1145999
3438
Traição sexual é apenas um modo
de magoar um parceiro.
19:21
In other words, the victim of an affair
325
1149437
2604
Em outras palavras, a vítima da traição
19:24
is not always the victim of the marriage.
326
1152041
2942
nem sempre é a vítima no casamento.
19:29
Now, you've listened to me,
327
1157840
2208
Agora, vocês já me escutaram,
19:32
and I know what you're thinking:
328
1160048
2375
e eu sei o que estão pensando:
19:34
She has a French accent,
she must be pro-affair.
329
1162423
3774
ela tem sotaque francês,
deve ser a favor da traição.
(Risos)
19:38
(Laughter)
330
1166697
3302
19:43
So, you're wrong.
331
1171761
1504
Vocês se equivocaram.
19:45
I am not French.
332
1173619
1555
Não sou francesa.
(Risos)
19:47
(Laughter)
333
1175666
2453
(Aplausos)
19:50
(Applause)
334
1178143
2880
19:53
And I'm not pro-affair.
335
1181602
1667
E não sou a favor da traição.
19:56
But because I think that good
can come out of an affair,
336
1184674
4384
Mas por pensar que o bem
pode surgir de uma traição,
20:01
I have often been asked
this very strange question:
337
1189058
3331
sempre me fazem essa estranha pergunta:
"Você a recomendaria?"
20:04
Would I ever recommend it?
338
1192413
1737
20:07
Now, I would no more
recommend you have an affair
339
1195514
2991
Bem, não recomendaria
que você tivesse um caso
20:10
than I would recommend you have cancer,
340
1198505
2544
assim como não recomendaria
que tivesse câncer,
20:13
and yet we know that people
who have been ill
341
1201049
2703
e ainda assim sabemos
que as pessoas que ficam doentes
20:15
often talk about how their illness
has yielded them a new perspective.
342
1203752
4198
geralmente falam como a doença
lhes dá uma nova perspectiva.
20:20
The main question that I've been asked
since I arrived at this conference
343
1208569
3337
A principal pergunta que me fizeram
desde que cheguei na conferência
20:23
when I said I would talk
about infidelity is, for or against?
344
1211906
3511
e disse que falaria
sobre infidelidade é: a favor ou contra?
20:28
I said, "Yes."
345
1216488
1261
Eu digo: "Sim."
(Risos)
20:30
(Laughter)
346
1218162
2421
20:33
I look at affairs from a dual perspective:
347
1221868
3637
Vejo as traições de uma dupla perspectiva:
20:37
hurt and betrayal on one side,
348
1225505
3648
mágoa e traição de um lado,
20:41
growth and self-discovery on the other --
349
1229153
3356
crescimento e autodescobrimento de outro.
20:44
what it did to you,
and what it meant for me.
350
1232509
3096
O que ela fez a você,
e o que ela significou para mim.
Então quando um casal vem me ver
para acertar as contas após uma traição
20:48
And so when a couple comes to me
in the aftermath of an affair
351
1236621
4668
20:53
that has been revealed,
352
1241289
1803
que foi descoberta,
20:55
I will often tell them this:
353
1243092
2328
costumo dizer-lhes:
20:57
Today in the West,
354
1245420
2405
Atualmente, no Ocidente,
20:59
most of us are going to have
two or three relationships
355
1247825
4879
a maioria de nós terá
dois ou três relacionamentos
21:04
or marriages,
356
1252704
1699
ou casamentos,
21:06
and some of us are going
to do it with the same person.
357
1254403
3135
e alguns serão com a mesma pessoa.
O primeiro casamento de vocês acabou.
21:10
Your first marriage is over.
358
1258666
2245
Gostariam de criar
um segundo casamento juntos?
21:13
Would you like to create
a second one together?
359
1261633
2841
Obrigada.
21:17
Thank you.
