ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jimmy Nelson - Last tribes photographer
Jimmy Nelson’s photographs of vanishing tribes illuminate the indigenous cultures of our shared world.

Why you should listen
In his quest to photograph endangered cultures, Jimmy Nelson has endured Kalishnikov-toting Banna tribesmen, subzero reindeer attacks, and thousands of miles of hard travel. With a blend of humility and humor, Nelson won the trust of each of his subjects, using an antique plate camera to create stunning portraits of 35 indigenous tribes.

The result is Before They Pass Away, a photo treasury that Nelson hopes will not only help preserve the lifestyles of people the world over, but also perhaps inspire readers in the developed world to ponder their own connections with their ancestral environments.

Venho fotografando há tempos,
00:12
Now, I've been making pictures
for quite a long time,
0
599
2647
00:15
and normally speaking,
a picture like this, for me,
1
3246
2392
e normalmente, uma foto como esta,
para mim, deveria ser fácil de tirar.
00:17
should be straightforward.
2
5638
1927
00:19
I'm in southern Ethiopia.
I'm with the Daasanach.
3
7565
2856
Estou no sul da Etiópia, com os Daasanach.
00:22
There's a big family,
there's a very beautiful tree,
4
10421
3111
E aqui estão uma família grande
e uma árvore muito linda,
00:25
and I make these pictures
with this very large,
5
13532
2578
e eu tiro estas fotos
com uma câmera de placa técnica
00:28
extremely cumbersome, very awkward
technical plate film camera.
6
16110
3761
enorme, extremamente pesada,
e muito complicada.
00:31
Does anybody know
4x5 and 10x8 sheets of film,
7
19871
3460
Alguém conhece 4x5 e 10x8 folhas de filme?
00:35
and you're setting it up,
putting it on the tripod.
8
23331
3529
E estou preparando tudo,
colocando no tripé.
00:38
I've got the family, spent the better part
of a day talking with them.
9
26860
3855
Tenho a família, passei quase um dia
inteiro conversando com eles.
00:42
They sort of understand what I'm on about.
10
30715
2016
Eles parecem entender o que quero.
00:44
They think I'm a bit crazy,
but that's another story.
11
32731
2508
Pensam que sou meio louco,
mas isto é outra história.
00:47
And what's most important for me
is the beauty and the aesthetic,
12
35239
3370
E, o mais importante para mim
é a beleza e a estética,
00:50
and that's based on the light.
13
38609
2252
e isto é baseado na luz.
00:52
So the light's setting
on my left-hand side,
14
40861
2601
A luz está baixando
no meu lado esquerdo,
00:55
and there's a balance
in the communication with the Daasanach,
15
43462
3634
e a comunicação
com os Daasanach está balançada,
trinta pessoas de todas as idades.
00:59
the family of 30, all ages.
16
47096
1544
01:00
There's babies and there's grandparents,
17
48640
1937
Têm bebês e avós,
01:02
I'm getting them in the tree
and waiting for the light to set,
18
50577
2966
eu os arrumo na árvore
e fico aguardando a luz baixando,
01:05
and it's going, going,
and I've got one sheet of film left,
19
53543
3089
indo, indo, e só tenho uma folha de filme,
e penso: "Estou bem, tudo sob controle."
01:08
and I think, I'm okay,
I'm in control, I'm in control.
20
56632
2541
Estou montando isto,
a luz está prestes a desaparecer,
01:11
I'm setting it up and I'm setting up,
and the light's just about to go,
21
59173
3572
e quero que seja dourada, linda.
01:14
and I want it to be golden,
I want it to be beautiful.
22
62745
2681
Quero a luz suspensa no horizonte
para iluminar essas pessoas,
01:17
I want it to be hanging on the horizon
so it lights these people,
23
65426
3046
em toda glória potencial
que puderem ser apresentadas.
01:20
in all the potential glory
that they could be presented.
24
68472
2630
A luz quase desaparecendo, quase,
e coloco minha folha na câmera,
01:23
And it's about to go
and it's about to go,
25
71102
2049
01:25
and I put my sheet in the camera,
26
73151
1625
tudo está em foco,
01:26
it's all focused,
27
74776
852
e de repente há uma enorme "pancada".
01:27
and all of a sudden
there's a massive "whack,"
28
75628
2285
01:29
and I'm looking around,
and in the top corner of the tree,
29
77913
2774
Olho em volta,
e no canto superior da árvore,
uma das meninas bate na outra ao lado,
(Risos)
01:32
one of the girls slaps
the girl next to her,
30
80687
2079
01:34
and the girl next to her pulls her hair,
and all hell breaks loose,
31
82766
3790
e a menina do lado puxa seu cabelo,
e vira um pandemônio.
01:38
and I'm standing there going,
"But the light, the light.
32
86556
2734
E estou lá dizendo: "Mas a luz, a luz.
Esperem, preciso da luz. Não se movam!"
01:41
Wait, I need the light.
Stay still! Stay still!"
33
89290
2290
E elas começam a gritar,
um homem se vira e começa a berrar.
01:43
And they start screaming,
34
91580
1200
01:44
and then one of the men turns around
and starts screaming, shouting,
35
92780
3184
A árvore toda desmorona,
quero dizer, as pessoas na árvore.
01:47
and the whole tree collapses,
not the tree, but the people in the tree.
36
95964
3433
Elas correm berrando, voltam para a aldeia
numa nuvem de fumaça,
01:51
They're all running around screaming,
and they run back off into the village
37
99397
3620
e me deixam ali, atrás do meu tripé.
01:55
in this sort of cloud of smoke, and I'm
left there standing behind my tripod.
38
103017
3782
Tenho minha folha mas a luz se foi,
e não posso tirar a foto.
01:58
I've got my sheet, and the light's gone,
and I can't make the picture.
39
106799
3347
Para onde foram todos? Não tinha ideia.
02:02
Where have they all gone? I had no idea.
40
110146
2024
Levei uma semana para tirar a foto
que estão vendo aqui hoje,
02:04
It took me a week, it took me a week to
make the picture which you see here today,
41
112170
3862
02:08
and I'll tell you why. (Applause)
42
116032
3039
e vou contar por quê. (Aplausos)
É muito, muito simples.
02:11
It's very, very, very simple --
I spent a week going around the village,
43
119071
3663
Passei uma semana na aldeia, procurando
cada um: "Pode me encontrar na árvore?
02:14
and I went to every single one:
"Hello, can you meet at the tree?
44
122734
3069
Qual a sua história? Quem é você?"
02:17
What's your story? Who are you?"
45
125803
1789
E, no final, foi por um namorado,
uma besteira.
02:19
And it all turned out to be
about a boyfriend, for crying out loud.
46
127592
3245
Tenho filhos adolescentes, devia entender.
02:22
I mean, I have teenage kids.
I should know.
47
130837
2083
02:24
It was about a boyfriend. The girl
on the top, she'd kissed the wrong boy,
48
132920
3673
A menina no topo beijou o garoto errado,
e elas começaram a brigar.
02:28
and they'd started having a fight.
49
136593
1638
Aprendi uma lição muito linda:
02:30
And there was a very, very beautiful
lesson for me in that:
50
138231
2797
se quisesse fotografar essas pessoas
02:33
If I was going to photograph these people
51
141028
2212
de forma digna, respeitosa,
como queria fazer,
02:35
in the dignified, respectful way
that I had intended,
52
143240
2544
02:37
and put them on a pedestal,
I had to understand them.
53
145784
2513
colocando-os num pedestal,
teria que entendê-los.
Não era só chegar, dar um aperto de mão,
ou dizer: "Sou Jimmy, sou fotógrafo."
02:40
It wasn't just about turning up.
It wasn't just about shaking a hand.
54
148297
3290
02:43
It wasn't about just saying,
"I'm Jimmy, I'm a photographer."
55
151587
3055
Eu tinha que conhecer um por um,
02:46
I had to get to know
every single one of them,
56
154642
2170
até saber quem namorava quem,
e quem podia beijar quem.
02:48
right down to whose boyfriend is who
and who is allowed to kiss who.
57
156812
3273
Afinal, uma semana depois,
02:52
So in the end, a week later,
58
160085
1886
02:53
and I was absolutely exhausted,
59
161971
1501
eu estava exausto, pedindo de joelhos:
02:55
I mean on my knees going,
"Please get back up in that tree.
60
163472
2771
"Voltem para árvore, por favor.
Eu preciso tirar esta foto."
02:58
It's a picture I need to make."
61
166243
1523
02:59
They all came back.
I put them all back up in the tree.
62
167766
2689
Todos voltaram, os coloquei na árvore.
03:02
I made sure the girls
were in the right position,
63
170455
2310
Arrumei as meninas na posição correta,
e as que tinham brigado bem distantes.
03:04
and the ones that slapped,
one was over there.
64
172765
2165
03:06
They did look at each other.
If you look at it later,
65
174930
2558
Elas ficaram se olhando com raiva.
Prestem atenção depois.
03:09
they're staring
at each other very angrily,
66
177488
2464
Arrumei a árvore e tudo mais,
e aí, me dei conta: "As cabras!
03:11
and I've got the tree and everything,
67
179952
1991
03:13
and then at the last minute, I go,
"The goat, the goat!
68
181943
2655
Preciso de algo para focar o olho;
de uma cabra branca no meio."
03:16
I need something for the eye to look at.
I need a white goat in the middle."
69
184598
3709
Posicionei as cabras e a coloquei ali.
03:20
So I swapped all the goats around.
I put the goats in.
70
188307
2589
Mesmo assim cometi um erro,
pois se repararem no lado esquerdo,
03:22
But even then I got it wrong, because
if you can see on the left-hand side,
71
190896
3611
verão um menininho vai embora bravo
porque não escolhi a sua cabra. (Risos)
03:26
another little boy storms off
because I didn't choose his goat.
72
194507
3087
Moral: tenho de aprender a falar
a língua das cabras e a dos Daasanachs.
03:29
So the moral being I have to learn
to speak Goat as well as Daasanach.
73
197594
3354
O esforço para tirar esta foto
e a história que acabei de contar,
03:32
But anyway, the effort
that goes into that picture
74
200948
2513
03:35
and the story that I've
just related to you,
75
203461
2094
como podem imaginar,
existem muitas outras
histórias bizarras e excêntricas
03:37
as you can imagine,
76
205555
1008
03:38
there are hundreds of other
bizarre, eccentric stories
77
206563
2536
de centenas de outras pessoas no mundo.
03:41
of hundreds of other people
around the world.
78
209099
2142
03:43
And this was about four years ago,
and I set off on a journey,
79
211241
3482
Isto foi há uns quatro anos,
quando embarquei numa jornada,
03:46
to be honest, a very indulgent journey.
80
214723
2021
uma jornada bem indulgente.
03:48
I'm a real romantic. I'm an idealist,
perhaps in some ways naive.
81
216744
5215
Eu sou um romântico de verdade.
Sou um idealista e, às vezes, ingênuo.
03:53
But I truly believe that there are people
on the planet that are beautiful.
82
221959
3793
Mas creio muito que existem pessoas
neste planeta que são muito lindas.
03:57
It's very, very simple.
It's not rocket science.
83
225752
2748
É muito simples. Não é complicado.
Eu queria pôr essas pessoas num pedestal,
04:00
I wanted to put
these people on a pedestal.
84
228500
2012
04:02
I wanted to put them on a pedestal
like they'd never been seen before.
85
230512
3483
como elas nunca tinham sido vistas antes.
04:05
So, I chose about 35 different groups,
86
233995
4027
Escolhi 35 grupos diferentes,
tribos e culturas indígenas.
04:10
tribes, indigenous cultures.
87
238022
1879
Eles foram escolhidos puramente pela
sua estética, da qual falarei mais tarde.
04:11
They were chosen purely
because of their aesthetic,
88
239901
2616
04:14
and I'll talk more about that later.
89
242517
1857
Não sou antropólogo,
não sou técnico no assunto,
04:16
I'm not an anthropologist, I have
no technical study with the subject,
90
244374
3576
04:19
but I do have a very,
very, very deep passion,
91
247950
2902
mas tenho uma paixão muito profunda,
04:22
and I believe that I had to choose
the most beautiful people on the planet
92
250852
3472
e creio que escolhi as pessoas
mais lindas deste planeta,
no ambiente mais lindo no qual elas vivem,
e juntei os dois e os apresento a vocês.
04:26
in the most beautiful
environment that they lived in,
93
254324
2586
04:28
and put the two together
and present them to you.
94
256910
2305
Cerca de um ano atrás,
publiquei as primeiras fotos,
04:31
95
259825
1464
04:33
I published the first pictures,
96
261289
2113
e algo extraordinariamente
emocionante aconteceu.
04:35
and something extraordinarily
exciting happened.
97
263402
4017
04:39
The whole world came running,
98
267419
1554
O mundo todo quis saber.
04:40
and it was a bizarre experience,
because everybody, from everywhere:
99
268973
3325
Foi uma experiência bizarra,
pois todo mundo perguntava:
"Quem são eles? O que são?
Quantos são? Onde os encontrou?
04:44
"Who are they? What are they?
How many are they?
100
272298
2331
04:46
Where did you find them?
Are they real? You faked it.
101
274629
2560
Eles existem mesmo? Você forjou isto?
Me conta, conta."
04:49
Tell me. Tell me. Tell me. Tell me."
Millions of questions for which,
102
277189
3430
Milhões de perguntas para as quais,
para ser franco, não tenho respostas.
04:52
to be honest, I don't have the answers.
103
280619
2124
Realmente não tinha respostas.
04:54
I really didn't have the answers,
104
282743
1680
Eu entendia que eram fotos bonitas,
esta era minha intenção,
04:56
and I could sort of understand, okay,
they're beautiful, that was my intention,
105
284423
3823
mas as perguntas que me faziam,
eu não conseguia responder.
05:00
but the questions that I
was being fired at,
106
288246
2067
05:02
I could not answer them.
107
290313
2043
Até que, foi bem engraçado,
cerca de um ano atrás alguém disse:
05:04
Until, it was quite amusing,
108
292356
2833
05:07
somebody said, "You've been
invited to do a TED Talk."
109
295189
2651
"Você foi convidado para falar no TED."
05:09
And I said, "Ted? Ted? Who's Ted?
I haven't met Ted before."
110
297840
3624
Eu disse: "Quem é Ted? Não o conheço."
Ele: "Não, uma palestra TED."
Eu: "Mas quem é Ted?
05:13
He said, "No, a TED Talk."
I said, "But who's Ted?
111
301464
2557
05:16
Do I have to talk to him or do we
sit with each other on the stage?"
112
304021
3322
Devo falar com ele ou nos sentamos
juntos no palco?" (Risos)
05:19
And, "No, no, the TED group.
You must know about it."
113
307343
3137
"Não, o grupo TED. Você deve conhecer."
05:22
And I said, "I've been in a teepee
and in a yurt for the last five years.
114
310480
3615
Eu: "Passei os últimos cinco anos
em um 'tipi' ou um 'yurt'.
Como vou saber quem é Ted?
Apresente-me a ele."
05:26
How do I know who Ted is?
Introduce me to him."
115
314095
2333
Resumindo, ele disse:
"Vamos dar uma palestra no TED."
05:28
Anyway, to cut a long story short,
he said, "We have to do a TED Talk."
116
316428
3339
05:31
Researched. Oh, exciting. That's great!
117
319767
1899
Pesquisei. Ah, incrível. Isso é ótimo!
05:33
And then eventually you're going
to go to TEDGlobal.
118
321666
2474
"E depois, você vai ao TEDGlobal.
Mais incrível ainda.
05:36
Even more exciting.
119
324140
1134
05:37
But what you need to do, you need
to teach the people lessons,
120
325274
3024
Mas vai ter que ensinar as pessoas,
05:40
lessons that you've learned
on your travels around the world
121
328298
3052
lições do que aprendeu em suas viagens
pelo mundo com as tribos."
05:43
with these tribes.
122
331350
930
05:44
I thought, lessons, okay, well,
what did I learn? Good question.
123
332280
3300
Pensei: "Lições, bem,
o que foi que aprendi? Boa pergunta.
05:47
Three. You need three lessons,
and they need to be terribly profound.
124
335580
3306
Três lições e elas têm que ser
incrivelmente profundas."
05:50
(Laughter)
125
338886
1918
(Risos)
05:52
And I thought, three lessons, well,
I'm going to think about it.
126
340804
3143
"Três lições, vou pensar sobre isso."
05:55
(Applause)
127
343947
4146
(Aplausos)
E pensei muito
e estive nesse palco dois dias atrás:
06:01
So I thought long and hard,
and I stood here two days ago,
128
349193
3347
fiz o teste e ensaiei com meus cartões,
o clicker na mão, minhas fotos na tela,
06:04
and I had my test run,
and I had my cards
129
352540
1965
06:06
and my clicker in my hands
and my pictures were on the screen,
130
354505
2944
tinha as três lições
e comecei a apresentação.
06:09
and I had my three lessons,
and I started presenting them,
131
357449
2720
06:12
and I had this very odd
out-of-body experience.
132
360169
2394
E tive uma experiência extracorpórea.
06:14
I sort of looked at myself
standing there, going, "Oh, Jimmy,
133
362563
2854
Eu me vi ali, de pé, dizendo:
"Ah, Jimmy, isto é um monte de asneira.
06:17
this is complete loads of codswallop.
134
365417
1816
06:19
All these people sitting here,
they've had more of these talks,
135
367233
3184
Essas pessoas aqui já foram a muitas
palestras, ouviram muitas lições...
06:22
they've heard more lessons in their life.
136
370417
2004
Quem é você pra contar o que aprendeu?
06:24
Who are you to tell them
what you've learned?
137
372421
2152
Quem é você pra guiar e mostrar a eles
06:26
Who are you to guide them
and who are you to show them
138
374573
2643
o que é certo, errado
o que as pessoas têm a dizer?"
06:29
what is right, what is wrong,
what these people have to say?"
139
377216
2955
E tive uma pequena crise,
coisa muito pessoal.
06:32
And I had a little bit of a,
it was very private,
140
380171
2281
06:34
a little bit of a meltdown.
141
382452
1318
E me senti como o menino afastando-se
da árvore com sua cabra, muito magoado,
06:35
I went back, and a little bit like the boy
walking away from the tree with his goats,
142
383770
4137
06:39
very disgruntled, going, that didn't work,
143
387907
3251
pensando que não tinha funcionado,
não era o que queria comunicar.
06:43
It wasn't what I wanted to communicate.
144
391158
2275
06:45
And I thought long and hard about it,
and I thought, well, the only thing
145
393433
3602
Refleti muito, e pensei:
"Bom, a única coisa
que posso comunicar é muito básica.
06:49
I can communicate is very, very basic.
146
397035
1853
Tenho que fazer um redirecionamento.
06:50
You have to turn it all the way around.
147
398888
1887
06:52
There's only one person
I know here, and that's me.
148
400775
3378
Existe só uma pessoa que conheço aqui: eu.
06:56
I'm still getting to know myself,
149
404153
1742
Ainda estou aprendendo a me conhecer,
06:57
and it's a lifelong journey, and I
probably won't have all the answers,
150
405895
3435
e isto é uma eterna jornada,
e não terei respostas para tudo,
07:01
but I did learn some extraordinary
things on this journey.
151
409330
4110
mas aprendi coisas extraordinárias
nesta viagem.
07:05
So what I'm going to do
is share with you my lessons.
152
413440
3157
E compartilharei minhas lições com vocês.
07:08
It's a very, as I explained at the
beginning, very indulgent, very personal,
153
416597
3726
Como disse no início,
é muito indulgente e pessoal,
07:12
how and why I made these pictures,
154
420323
2331
como e por que criei estas fotografias,
07:14
and I leave it to you as the audience
to interpret what these lessons
155
422654
3235
e vou deixar vocês na audiência
interpretarem o que estas lições
07:17
have meant to me, what they could
perhaps mean to you.
156
425889
3648
significaram para mim,
e o que poderiam significar para vocês.
Eu viajei muito quando criança.
07:22
I traveled enormously as a child.
157
430377
2715
Era um nômade e era muito empolgante,
viajava pelo mundo todo.
07:25
I was very nomadic.
It was actually very exciting.
158
433092
2521
07:27
All around the world,
159
435613
1811
07:29
and I had this feeling that I
was pushed off at great speed
160
437424
3876
Tinha a sensação de ter sido forçado,
aceleradamente, a tornar-me alguém:
07:33
to become somebody,
become that individual, Jimmy.
161
441300
2463
"Seja essa pessoa, Jimmy.
Percorra o planeta!"
07:35
Go off into the planet,
and so I ran, and I ran,
162
443763
2398
Então corria, e minha esposa,
às vezes, zomba de mim:
07:38
and my wife sometimes kids me,
"Jimmy, you look a bit like Forrest Gump,"
163
446161
3510
"Você parece o Forrest Gump,"
e eu: "Não, tudo tem sentido, pode crer."
07:41
but I'm, "No, it's all
about something, trust me."
164
449671
2337
Segui correndo, e, de certo modo,
cheguei a algum lugar
07:44
So I kept running and I kept running,
and I sort of got somewhere
165
452008
3163
olhei à minha volta e pensei:
"Onde é o meu lugar? Onde me encaixo?
07:47
and I sort of stood there and looked
around me and I thought, well,
166
455171
3171
07:50
where do I belong? Where do I fit?
167
458342
1859
O que eu sou? De onde vim?
Não tenho a menor ideia."
07:52
What am I? Where am I from? I had no idea.
168
460201
3312
07:55
So I hope there aren't too many
psychologists in this audience.
169
463513
3077
Espero que não haja
muitos psicólogos na audiência.
Talvez parte desta jornada
07:58
Perhaps part of this journey
170
466590
1390
07:59
is about me trying to find out
where I belonged.
171
467980
3123
seja sobre eu tentando saber
a que lugar pertencia.
08:03
So whilst going, and don't worry, I didn't
when I arrived with these tribes,
172
471103
4097
E não se preocupem,
não fiz isto quando cheguei nas tribos,
nem me pintei de amarelo
e fui por ai com lanças e tangas.
08:07
I didn't paint myself yellow and run
around with these spears and loincloths.
173
475200
3774
08:10
But what I did find were people
that belonged themselves,
174
478974
2926
Mas o que vi foram pessoas
que pertenciam a si mesmas,
08:13
and they inspired me,
some extraordinary people,
175
481900
2670
e essas pessoas extraordinárias
me inspiraram,
08:16
and I'd like to introduce you
to some heroes of mine.
176
484570
2810
e quero lhes apresentar
alguns dos meus heróis.
08:19
They're the Huli.
177
487380
1892
Eles são os Huli.
08:21
Now, the Huli are some of the most
extraordinarily beautiful people
178
489272
4110
Os Huli são um dos povos
mais bonitos no planeta.
08:25
on the planet.
179
493382
1277
Eles têm orgulho e vivem
nos planaltos da Papua Nova Guiné.
08:26
They're proud. They live in
the Papua New Guinean highlands.
180
494659
3972
08:30
There's not many of them left,
and they're called the Huli wigmen.
181
498631
3099
Não há muito deles, e são chamados
de "Os Homens-Peruca".
08:33
And images like this, I mean,
this is what it's all about for me.
182
501730
3078
O que está nestas imagens
é o que me interessa.
Você passa semanas, meses,
conversando com eles,
08:36
And you've spent weeks and months there
talking with them, getting there,
183
504808
3490
e queria colocá-los num pedestal.
08:40
and I want to put them on a pedestal,
and I said, "You have something
184
508298
3249
Eu disse: "Vocês possuem algo
que muitas pessoas jamais viram.
08:43
that many people have not seen.
185
511547
1533
Vocês estão nessa natureza esplêndida."
É realmente assim. Isto é autêntico.
08:45
You sit in this stunning nature."
186
513080
1655
08:46
And it really does look like this,
and they really do look like this.
187
514735
3281
08:50
This is the real thing.
188
518016
1201
E sabem por que se orgulham,
por que se parecem assim,
08:51
And you know why they're proud?
You know why they look like this,
189
519217
3054
e por que me esforcei para fotografá-los
e apresentá-los a vocês?
08:54
and why I broke my back literally
190
522271
1793
08:56
to photograph them
and present them to you?
191
524064
2174
Porque eles têm rituais extraordinários.
08:58
It's because they have
these extraordinary rituals.
192
526238
2502
Os Huli têm um ritual:
09:00
And the Huli have this ritual:
When they're teenagers,
193
528740
2523
na adolescência, quando viram homens,
eles têm que raspar a cabeça,
09:03
becoming a man,
they have to shave their heads,
194
531263
2877
09:06
and they spend the rest of their life
shaving their heads every single day,
195
534140
4122
e passam o resto de suas vidas
raspando-a todos os dias.
09:10
and what they do with that hair,
196
538262
1964
E o que fazem com o cabelo?
Eles fazem uma criação muito pessoal.
09:12
they make it into a creation,
197
540226
1904
09:14
a creation that's
a very personal creation.
198
542130
1996
É a criação deles, a criação Huli.
09:16
It's their creation.
It's their Huli creation.
199
544126
2253
Por isso são chamados de homens-peruca.
09:18
So they're called the Huli wigmen.
200
546379
2043
09:20
That's a wig on his head.
201
548422
1857
Isto é uma peruca na cabeça dele,
feita de cabelo humano,
09:22
It's all made out of his human hair.
202
550279
1756
09:24
And then they decorate that wig with
the feathers of the birds of paradise,
203
552035
3538
e eles enfeitam a peruca
com penas de aves-do-paraíso.
09:27
and don't worry,
there are many birds there.
204
555573
2248
Não se preocupem, há muitas aves lá.
É um povo pequeno, não fiquem chateados.
09:29
There's very few people living,
so nothing to get too upset about,
205
557821
3212
Eles passam o resto da vida recriando
esses chapéus e é extraordinário.
09:33
and they spend the rest of their life
recreating these hats
206
561033
2907
09:35
and getting further
and further,
207
563940
1554
09:37
and it's extraordinary,
and there's another group,
208
565494
2404
Há um outro grupo chamado Kalang
que vive no próximo vale,
09:39
they're called the Kalang,
and they live in the next valley,
209
567898
3032
mas sua língua e aparência
são totalmente diferentes,
09:42
but they speak a completely
different language,
210
570930
2218
e eles usam chapéus feito de escaravelhos.
09:45
they look completely different,
and they wear a hat,
211
573148
2472
Uns pequenos escaravelhos
verde esmeralda,
09:47
and it's built out of scarabs,
212
575620
1597
09:49
these fantastic emerald green
little scarabs,
213
577217
2313
e, às vezes, usam cinco ou seis mil deles
em um chapéu.
09:51
and sometimes there are 5,000
or 6,000 scarabs in this hat,
214
579530
3107
Eles passam a vida coletando
esses escaravelhos para fazer chapéus.
09:54
and they spend the whole of their life
collecting these scarabs
215
582637
3043
09:57
to build these hats.
216
585680
1018
Os Huli me inspiraram
porque pertencem ao lugar.
09:58
So the Huli inspired me
in that they belong.
217
586698
3924
10:02
Perhaps I have to work harder
at finding a ritual which matters for me
218
590622
3576
Talvez precise me esforçar mais
e achar um ritual significante para mim,
10:06
and going back into my past
to see where I actually fit.
219
594198
4481
voltar ao passado
para ver
onde realmente me encaixo.
10:10
An extremely important part
of this project
220
598679
2670
Uma parte muito importante do projeto
10:13
was about how I photograph
these extraordinary people.
221
601349
5921
foi o modo de fotografar
esse povo extraordinário.
É basicamente a beleza.
10:19
And it's basically beauty.
I think beauty matters.
222
607270
3390
Acho a beleza importante.
10:22
We spend the whole of our existence
revolving around beauty:
223
610660
3460
Passamos toda nossa existência
girando em torno da beleza:
10:26
beautiful places, beautiful things,
and ultimately, beautiful people.
224
614120
3668
lugares e coisas bonitas,

e, fundamentalmente, pessoas bonitas.
10:29
It's very, very, very significant.
225
617788
2020
Isto é muito significante.
10:31
I've spent all of my life analyzing
what do I look like?
226
619808
2787
Passei a vida analisando como
me pareço.
10:34
Am I perceived as beautiful?
227
622595
1737
Sou visto como um homem bonito?
10:36
Does it matter if I'm
a beautiful person or not,
228
624332
2373
Faz diferença se a pessoa é bonita ou não,
ou é puramente baseado na minha estética?
10:38
or is it purely based on my aesthetic?
229
626705
1973
10:40
And then when I went off,
I came to a very narrow conclusion.
230
628678
2926
E quando me fui,
cheguei à uma conclusão muito estreita.
10:43
Do I have to go around the world
photographing, excuse me,
231
631604
3552
Será que tenho que sair mundo afora

tirando fotos, me perdoem,
10:47
women between the age of 25 and 30?
Is that what beauty is going to be?
232
635156
3798
de mulheres de 25 a 30 anos?

A beleza é isto?
10:50
Is everything before and after that
utterly irrelevant?
233
638954
3455
Tudo antes e depois
é totalmente irrelevante?
10:54
And it was only until I went on a journey,
234
642409
2244
E isso foi até ter embarcado
numa jornada tão extrema
10:56
a journey that was so extreme,
235
644653
2787
10:59
I still get shivers when I think about it.
236
647440
2608
que me arrepio ao pensar nela.
Fui a uma parte do mundo,
não sei se conhecem...
11:02
I went to a part of the world,
and I don't know whether any of you
237
650048
3149
11:05
have ever heard of Chukotka.
Has anybody ever heard of Chukotka?
238
653197
3205
já ouviram falar de Chukotka?
11:08
Chukotka probably is, technically,
as far as one can go
239
656402
4527
Chukotka, tecnicamente falando,

é o lugar mais remoto onde pode-se ir
11:12
and still be on the living planet.
240
660929
3762
e ainda estar neste planeta.
Fica a 13 horas de voo de Moscou.
11:16
It's 13 hours' flight from Moscow.
241
664691
2066
11:18
First you've got to get to Moscow, and
then 13 hours' flight nonstop from Moscow.
242
666757
3848
Você vai para Moscou e de lá

pega um voo direto de 13 horas.
11:22
And that's if you get there.
243
670605
2721
Isso se chegar lá.
Como veem, tem gente
que pousa fora da pista. (Risos)
11:25
As you can see, some people
sort of miss the runway.
244
673326
2525
E quando aterrizamos em Chukotka,
encontramos os Chukchis.
11:27
And then when you land there,
in Chukotka are the Chukchis.
245
675851
3009
Os Chukchis são
os últimos inuits indígenas da Sibéria,
11:30
Now, the Chukchis are the last
indigenous Inuits of Siberia,
246
678860
3291
11:34
and they're people I'd heard about,
I'd hardly seen any images of,
247
682151
3193
de quem ouvi falar,

e vi pouquíssimas imagens,
mas eu sabia que existiam.
11:37
but I knew they were there,
248
685344
1396
11:38
and I'd been in touch with this guide,
249
686740
1994
Entrei em contato com um guia,
que me disse:
11:40
and this guide said,
250
688734
1039
11:41
"There's this fantastic tribe.
There's only about 40 of them.
251
689773
3037
“Existe uma tribo fantástica
de apenas 40 pessoas.
Vamos conseguir encontrá-los."
E começamos a nossa jornada.
11:44
You'll be okay. We'll find them."
So off we went on this journey.
252
692810
3190
Chegamos lá após um mês de viagem,
atravessando gelo,
11:48
When we arrived there, after a month
of traveling across the ice,
253
696000
3062
e fomos até eles,
mas não me deixaram fotografá-los.
11:51
and we'd got to them, but then
I was not allowed to photograph them.
254
699062
3324
Disseram: “Não pode tirar nossas fotos.
11:54
They said, "You cannot photograph us.
You have to wait.
255
702386
2569
Terá que esperar até que nos conheça,
11:56
You have to wait until you get to know us.
You have to wait until you understand us.
256
704955
4183
nos entenda e veja como
interagimos uns com os outros."
12:01
You have to wait until you see
how we interact with one another."
257
709138
3126
E só depois de muitas semanas,
vi um respeito.
12:04
And only then, it was many,
many weeks later, I saw a respect.
258
712264
2938
Eles não faziam nenhum julgamento.
12:07
They had zero judgment.
259
715202
1534
12:08
They observed one another, from the youth,
from the middle aged to the old.
260
716736
3598
Eles se cuidam, da juventude à velhice.
Eles precisam um do outro.
12:12
They need each other.
261
720334
2266
As crianças mastigam carne o dia todo
porque os adultos não têm dentes,
12:14
The children need to chew the meat all day
262
722600
2030
12:16
because the adults don't have any teeth,
263
724630
2149
e são as crianças que levam os idosos
ao banheiro porque estão enfermos.
12:18
but at the same time, the children
take the old aged people out
264
726779
2958
12:21
to the toilet because they're infirm,
265
729737
1970
O respeito comunitário entre eles
é fantástico.
12:23
so there's this fantastic
community of respect.
266
731707
2285
Eles adoram e admiram uns aos outros,
12:25
And they adore and admire one another,
and they truly taught me
267
733992
3758
e me ensinaram sobre a beleza.
12:29
what beauty was.
268
737750
1763
12:31
(Applause)
269
739513
2600
(Aplausos)
Agora peço um pouco
de interação na audiência.
12:34
Now I'm going to ask for a little bit
of audience interaction.
270
742113
2948
Isto é muito importante

para finalizar a palestra.
12:37
This is extremely important
for the end of my talk.
271
745061
2557
Quero que olhem para alguém
à sua esquerda ou direita,
12:39
If you could look at somebody
left to the right of you,
272
747618
2631
e o observe e faça um elogio.

Isto é muito importante.
12:42
and I want you to observe them,
273
750249
1984
12:44
and I want you to give them a compliment.
This is very important.
274
752233
3178
Podem elogiar o nariz, ou o cabelo,
ou mesmo sua aura, não importa,
12:47
Now, it may be their nose or their hair
or even their aura, I don't mind,
275
755411
4023
12:51
but please look at each other,
give them a compliment.
276
759434
3043
mas olhem um para o outro,
e façam um elogio.
Precisam ser rápidos,
pois não temos muito tempo.
12:54
You have to be quick,
because I'm running out of time.
277
762477
2693
12:57
And you have to remember it.
278
765170
2970
E vocês têm que lembrar disto.
13:01
Okay, thank you, thank you, thank you,
you've given each other compliments.
279
769768
4202
Ótimo, obrigado,
vocês elogiaram um ao outro.
Guardem este elogio para mais tarde.
13:05
Hold that compliment very, very tightly.
Hold it for later.
280
773970
3576
13:09
And the last thing, it was
extraordinarily profound,
281
777546
4434
E a última coisa, muito profunda
que aconteceu apenas há duas semanas:
13:13
and it happened only two weeks ago.
Two weeks ago I went back to the Himba.
282
781980
3679
eu voltei para os Himbas
que vivem no norte da Namíbia,
13:17
Now, the Himba live in northern Namibia
on the border of Angola,
283
785659
3104
na fronteira com Angola,
onde estive algumas vezes.
13:20
and I'd been there a few times before,
284
788763
1927
Voltei lá para apresentar o meu livro,
13:22
and I'd gone back
to present this book I'd made,
285
790690
2349
13:25
to show them the pictures,
to get into a discussion with them,
286
793039
2921
para mostrar as fotos,
e falar sobre elas com eles,
e dizer: "É assim que vi e amo vocês.
É assim que os respeito.
13:27
to say, "This is how I saw you.
This is how I love you.
287
795960
2870
13:30
This is how I respect you. What
do you think? Am I right? Am I wrong?"
288
798830
3313
O que acham?
Estou certo ou errado?"
Eu queria este debate, foi bem comovente.
13:34
So I wanted this debate.
It was very, very, very emotional,
289
802143
3073
Uma noite sentados em volta da fogueira,
13:37
and one night we were sitting
around the campfire,
290
805216
2441
e, na verdade,
eu tinha bebido demais,
e ali sob as estrelas pensei:
13:39
and I have to be honest, I think I'd had
a little bit too much to drink,
291
807657
3622
"Isso é ótimo, vocês viram minhas fotos,

nós nos amamos...” (Risos)
13:43
and I was sort of sitting under the stars
going, "This is great,
292
811279
3547
E eu estava meio lento,
e olhei à minha volta e disse:
13:46
you've seen my pictures,
we love each other." (Laughter)
293
814826
2624
13:49
And I'm a little bit slow,
294
817450
3142
"Acho, talvez, que a cerca sumiu.
13:52
and I looked around me, and I said,
295
820592
1911
13:54
I thought, maybe, the fence is missing.
296
822503
2302
Não tinha uma cerca aqui antes?"
13:56
Wasn't there a fence here
last time I came?
297
824805
2095
Uma cerca de proteção em volta da aldeia.
13:58
You know, this big
protective fence around the village,
298
826900
3058
Eles me fitaram e disseram:
“É, chefe morre.”
14:01
and they sort of looked at me
and go, "Yeah, chief die."
299
829958
2714
E pensei: "Tudo bem, chefe morrendo...",
olho as estrelas, a fogueira.
14:04
And I thought, okay,
chief dying, right, you know,
300
832672
2466
14:07
look up at the stars again,
look at the campfire.
301
835138
2391
"Chefe morre." Que diabos tem a ver
chefe morre com a cerca?
14:09
Chief die. What on Earth does
chief die have to do with the fence?
302
837529
3870
“Chefe morre. Primeiro destruímos,
depois refletimos.
14:13
"Chief die.
303
841399
3017
14:16
First we destroy, yeah?
Then we reflect.
304
844416
2438
E então reconstruímos. E aí respeitamos."
14:18
Then we rebuild. Then we respect."
305
846854
3854
Não consegui conter minhas lágrimas.
14:22
And I burst out in tears, because
my father had only just died
306
850708
3948
Meu pai tinha falecido antes de eu viajar,
e nunca o tinha aceitado.
14:26
prior to this journey,
307
854656
1834
14:28
and I didn't ever acknowledge him,
308
856490
1671
14:30
I didn't ever appreciate him for the fact
that I'm probably standing here today
309
858161
3959
Eu nunca o valorizei, e, provavelmente
não estaria aqui hoje senão fosse por ele.
14:34
because of him.
310
862120
2113
Esse povo me ensinou que somos

o que somos por causa dos nossos pais,
14:36
These people taught me that we are only
who we are because of our parents
311
864233
5026
nossos avós e antepassados
e o que ocorreu antes deles,
14:41
and our grandparents
and our forefathers
312
869259
2276
14:43
going on and on and on before that,
313
871535
1811
e, não importa o quão romântico
ou idealista eu seja nesta jornada,
14:45
and I, no matter how romantic
or how idealistic I am on this journey,
314
873346
4086
14:49
I did not know that until two weeks ago.
315
877432
2357
isto eu não sabia duas semanas atrás,
14:51
I did not know that until two weeks ago.
316
879789
2949
não estava ciente disto.
14:54
So what's this all about?
317
882738
2781
Então, o que significa tudo isso?
14:57
Well, there's an image
I'd like to show you,
318
885519
2257
Bem, há uma imagem
que quero lhes mostrar,
14:59
quite a special image, and it wasn't
essentially the image I wanted to choose.
319
887776
3729
muito especial, que aliás,
não era bem a imagem que iria mostrar.
15:03
I was sitting there the other day,
and I have to finish on a strong image.
320
891505
3798
Pensei comigo: "Quero encerrar
com uma foto marcante."
Alguém disse: "Mostre a foto do Nanev."
"Mas não é a minha foto favorita."
15:07
And somebody said, "You have to show
them the picture of the Nanev. The Nanev."
321
895303
3859
15:11
I was like, yeah, but that's not
my favorite picture.
322
899162
2668
Ela insistiu: “Não! Ela é fenomenal.
Você nos olhos dele.”
15:13
She went, "No no no no no no no.
It's an amazing picture.
323
901830
2698
"Como assim, 'eu nos olhos dele'?
É a foto do Nanev.”
15:16
You're in his eyes."
324
904528
1053
15:17
I said, "What do you mean I'm in his eyes?
It's a picture of the Nanev."
325
905581
3539
Ela: “Olha de perto,
você está nos olhos dele!”
15:21
She said, "No, look, look closely,
you're in his eyes."
326
909120
2589
E quando você olha de perto,
estou refletido nos olhos dele.
15:23
And when you look closely at this picture,
there is a reflection of me in his eyes,
327
911709
4162
Talvez ele possua minha alma,

e eu estou na alma dele.
15:27
so I think perhaps he has my soul,
and I'm in his soul,
328
915871
3389
Enquanto as fotos olham para vocês,

peço-lhes que olhem para elas.
15:31
and whilst these pictures look at you,
I ask you to look at them.
329
919260
3178
15:34
You may not be reflected in his eyes,
330
922438
2688
Talvez não estejam
refletidos nos olhos dele,
15:37
but there is something extraordinarily
important about these people.
331
925126
3376
mas há algo de extraordinária
importância a respeito dessas pessoas.
15:40
I don't ultimately have the answers,
as I've just shared with you,
332
928502
4068
Como compartilhei com vocês, não sei
as respostas, mas vocês devem saber.
15:44
but you must do.
There must be something there.
333
932570
2248
Tem que haver algo.
15:46
So if you can briefly reflect
on what I was discussing
334
934818
3622
Então, reflitam bem rápido
sobre o que estive falando:
15:50
about beauty and about belonging
and about our ancestors and our roots,
335
938440
5201
a beleza, o pertencer,

sobre nossos antepassados e nossas raízes,
15:55
and I need you all
to stand for me, please.
336
943641
3482
e quero que todos se levantem, por favor.
15:59
(Laughter)
337
947123
1945
(Risos)
Não tem desculpa, é quase hora do almoço
16:01
Now you have no excuse.
It's almost lunchtime,
338
949068
2300
e não se preocupem, não quero
aplausos em pé, nem elogios. (Risos)
16:03
and this is not a standing ovation,
so don't worry,
339
951368
2534
16:05
I'm not fishing for compliments.
340
953902
1882
16:07
But you were given a compliment
a few minutes ago.
341
955784
2600
Mas vocês receberam um elogio
uns minutos atrás.
16:10
Now I want you to stand tall.
342
958384
2327
Agora quero que fiquem eretos.
Quero que respirem fundo, é o que digo.
16:12
I want you to breathe in.
This is what I say.
343
960711
2184
16:14
I'm not going to get
on my knees for two weeks.
344
962895
2341
Não vou ficar de joelhos por duas semanas.
Não vou pedir que carreguem uma cabra,
e sei que não possuem nenhum camelo.
16:17
I'm not going to ask you
to carry a goat,
345
965236
2088
16:19
and I know you don't have any camels.
346
967324
2021
O poder da fotografia é extraordinário.
16:21
Photography's extraordinarily powerful.
347
969345
1874
É uma linguagem que nós todos entendemos
16:23
It's this language which
we now all understand.
348
971219
2188
16:25
We truly do all understand it,
349
973407
1857
e nós temos esta lareira digital global.
16:27
and we have this global
digital fireplace, don't we,
350
975264
2485
16:29
but I want to share you with the world,
351
977749
1971
Quero compartilhar vocês com o mundo,
pois também são uma tribo.
16:31
because you are also a tribe.
352
979720
1465
Da tribo TED, certo?
Mas precisam lembrar daquele elogio.
16:33
You are the TED tribe, yeah?
But you have to remember that compliment.
353
981185
3308
16:36
You have to stand tall,
breathe in through your nose,
354
984493
3241
Fiquem eretos, respirem pelo nariz,
e eu vou fotografá-los.
16:39
and I'm going to photograph you. Okay?
355
987734
1968
16:41
I need to do a panoramic shot,
so it's going to take a minute,
356
989702
2944
A foto é panorâmica,
vai demorar um pouquinho,
então concentrem-se, certo?
16:44
so you have to concentrate, okay?
357
992646
1581
Respirem, eretos, não riam.
Respirem pelo nariz.
16:46
Breathe in, stand tall, no laughing.
Shh, breathe through your nose.
358
994227
3269
Vou tirar a foto.
16:49
I'm going to photograph.
