ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Emilie Wapnick - Writer, coach, artist ...
Career coach Emilie Wapnick celebrates the "multipotentialite" -- those of us with many interests, many jobs over a lifetime, and many interlocking potentials.

Why you should listen

Emilie Wapnick has been a musician/songwriter, a web designer, filmmaker, writer, law student and entrepreneur. "This is how I’ve always lived," she writes, "moving from interest to interest, building on my skills in different areas, and synthesizing the knowledge I acquire along the way."

As a career and life coach, she helps other people with wide and varied interests understand and appreciate who they are, in a society that asks us to pick a lane and stay in it. Her work with "multipotentialites" has resulted in the book Renaissance Business and the interesting website Puttylike.

Wapnick's new book, How to Be Everything: A Guide for Those Who (Still) Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up, is due out in May 2017.

I'm someone who's never
been able to answer the question
11
33342
2633
Eu nunca consegui
responder a essa pergunta:
"O que você quer ser quando crescer?"
00:47
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
12
35999
2290
Sabe, o problema não era
que eu não gostasse de nada;
00:50
See, the problem wasn't
that I didn't have any interests --
13
38313
3436
era que eu gostava de muitas coisas.
00:53
it's that I had too many.
14
41773
2202
No ensino médio, gostava de inglês,
matemática, artes, criava sites
00:55
In high school, I liked English
and math and art and I built websites
15
43999
4451
e tocava guitarra numa banda de punk
chamada Frustrated Telephone Operator.

(Risos)
01:06
(Laughter)
18
54999
2300
Isso continuou depois do ensino médio
01:09
This continued after high school,
19
57323
1905
e, em determinado momento,
comecei a notar um padrão em mim:
01:11
and at a certain point, I began
to notice this pattern in myself
20
59252
4408
eu ficava interessada numa área,
01:15
where I would become interested in an area
21
63684
2553
mergulhava nela,
me envolvia totalmente nela,
01:18
and I would dive in, become all-consumed,
22
66261
3159
e conseguia me sair muito bem nela,
independentemente do que fosse,
01:21
and I'd get to be pretty good
at whatever it was,
23
69444
3531
Mas aí, em determinado momento,
eu começava a ficar entediada.
01:24
and then I would hit this point
where I'd start to get bored.
24
72999
4602
01:30
And usually I would try
and persist anyway,
25
78046
2776
Normalmente, eu insistia em continuar
por já ter dedicado muito tempo, esforço
e, às vezes, dinheiro nessa área,
01:32
because I had already devoted
so much time and energy
26
80846
2897
01:35
and sometimes money into this field.
27
83767
2496
mas, no fim, esse tédio,
essa sensação, tipo:
01:38
But eventually this sense of boredom,
28
86287
2303
01:40
this feeling of, like, yeah, I got this,
this isn't challenging anymore --
29
88614
4780
"Tá, já consegui.
Agora não tem mais graça"
chegava a um limite
e eu tinha que desistir.
01:45
it would get to be too much.
30
93418
1635
01:47
And I would have to let it go.
31
95751
1659
Mas eu acabava
me interessando por outra coisa,
01:50
But then I would become interested
in something else,
32
98262
2501
algo totalmente diferente,
e eu mergulhava naquilo,
01:52
something totally unrelated,
and I would dive into that,
33
100787
3188
me envolvia totalmente naquilo,
e pensava: "Isso! Descobri minha vocação".
01:55
and become all-consumed,
and I'd be like, "Yes! I found my thing,"
34
103999
4262
Mas aí, chegava de novo um momento
em que eu começava a ficar entediada
02:00
and then I would hit this point again
where I'd start to get bored.
35
108285
4297
e eu acabava desistindo.
02:05
And eventually, I would let it go.
36
113352
2795
Mas aí, eu descobria algo novo
e totalmente diferente,
02:09
But then I would discover
something new and totally different,
37
117106
3068
e mergulhava naquilo.
02:12
and I would dive into that.
38
120198
1571
Esse padrão me causava muita ansiedade,
02:15
This pattern caused me a lot of anxiety,
39
123103
3739
por duas razões.
02:18
for two reasons.
40
126866
1182
A primeira é que eu não tinha certeza
02:20
The first was that I wasn't sure
41
128460
2832
de como eu transformaria qualquer
daquelas coisas numa carreira.
02:23
how I was going to turn
any of this into a career.
42
131316
3013
Eu achava que, por fim,
teria que escolher uma,
02:26
I thought that I would eventually
have to pick one thing,
43
134353
2798
negar todas as minhas outras paixões
e simplesmente aceitar o tédio.
02:29
deny all of my other passions,
44
137175
2214
02:31
and just resign myself to being bored.
45
139413
3396
A outra razão de tanta ansiedade
era um pouquinho mais pessoal.
02:35
The other reason it caused me
so much anxiety
46
143595
2319
02:37
was a little bit more personal.
47
145938
1634
Eu temia que houvesse
algo de errado nisso
02:40
I worried that there
was something wrong with this,
48
148230
2718
e algo de errado comigo
por estar sempre desistindo.
02:42
and something wrong with me
for being unable to stick with anything.
49
150972
4118
Eu temia que eu tivesse medo
de me comprometer,
02:47
I worried that I was afraid of commitment,
50
155677
2387
que eu fosse uma pessoa sem foco,
ou que estivesse me autossabotando,
02:50
or that I was scattered,
or that I was self-sabotaging,
51
158088
3461
com medo do meu próprio sucesso.
02:53
afraid of my own success.
52
161573
1666
Se você se identifica com minha história
e com essas sensações,
02:57
If you can relate to my story
and to these feelings,
53
165261
3714
gostaria que você fizesse
a si mesmo uma pergunta
03:00
I'd like you to ask yourself a question
54
168999
2274
que gostaria de ter feito
a mim mesma na época.
03:03
that I wish I had asked myself back then.
55
171297
2586
Pergunte a si mesmo onde aprendeu
a associar "errado" ou "anormal"
03:06
Ask yourself where you learned to assign
the meaning of wrong or abnormal
56
174796
5426
a fazer coisas diversas.
03:12
to doing many things.
57
180246
1821
Vou dizer onde você aprendeu:
a cultura lhe ensinou isso.
03:15
I'll tell you where you learned it:
58
183741
1739
03:17
you learned it from the culture.
59
185504
2086
Na primeira vez em que ouvimos a pergunta
"O que você quer ser quando crescer?",
03:22
We are first asked the question
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
60
190074
3791
temos mais ou menos cinco anos,
03:25
when we're about five years old.
61
193889
1568
mas a verdade é que ninguém liga
realmente pra o que você diz nessa idade.
03:27
And the truth is that no one really cares
what you say when you're that age.
62
195481
3693
(Risos)
03:31
(Laughter)
63
199198
1001
É uma pergunta considerada comum,
03:32
It's considered an innocuous question,
64
200223
2375
feita para as crianças darem
respostas bonitinhas,
03:34
posed to little kids
to elicit cute replies,
65
202622
2360
tipo: "Quero ser astronauta",
ou: "Quero ser bailarina",
03:37
like, "I want to be an astronaut,"
or "I want to be a ballerina,"
66
205006
3673
ou: "Quero ser pirata".
03:40
or "I want to be a pirate."
67
208703
1883
Ponha a fantasia de Halloween aqui.
03:42
Insert Halloween costume here.
68
210610
1950
(Risos)
03:44
(Laughter)
69
212584
1511
Mas continuam nos fazendo essa pergunta
várias vezes conforme ficamos mais velhos,
03:46
But this question gets asked of us
again and again as we get older
70
214119
4412
de diversas formas: por exemplo,
perguntam a alunos do ensino médio
03:50
in various forms -- for instance,
high school students might get asked
71
218555
3877
que graduação vão cursar na faculdade.
03:54
what major they're going
to pick in college.
72
222456
2227
Em determinado momento,
03:57
And at some point,
73
225088
1882
essa pergunta deixa de ser
o exercício bonitinho de antes
03:58
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
74
226994
2028
04:01
goes from being
the cute exercise it once was
75
229046
3358
para se tornar algo que tira o nosso sono.
04:04
to the thing that keeps us up at night.
76
232428
2272
Por quê?
04:07
Why?
77
235137
1150
Sabe, embora essa pergunta inspire
as crianças a sonhar com o que podem ser,
04:09
See, while this question inspires kids
to dream about what they could be,
78
237049
5445
não as inspira a sonhar
com tudo aquilo que podem ser.
04:14
it does not inspire them to dream
about all that they could be.
79
242518
3412
Na verdade, o efeito
é exatamente o oposto
04:17
In fact, it does just the opposite,
80
245954
2398
04:20
because when someone asks you
what you want to be,
81
248376
3016
porque, quando alguém pergunta
o que você quer ser,
você não pode responder
dizendo 20 coisas diferentes,
04:23
you can't reply with 20 different things,
82
251416
2796
embora adultos bem-intencionados
provavelmente vão rir e dizer:
04:26
though well-meaning adults
will likely chuckle and be like,
83
254236
2895
"Ah, que lindo, mas não dá
pra fabricar violinos e ser psicólogo.
04:29
"Oh, how cute, but you can't be
a violin maker and a psychologist.
84
257155
4052
Você tem que escolher."
04:33
You have to choose."
85

Esse é o Dr. Bob Childs.
04:36

86

04:37

87

Ele fabrica violinos e é psicoterapeuta.
04:40
and he's a luthier and psychotherapist.
88

E essa é Amy Ng, editora de revista

04:44
And this is Amy Ng, a magazine editor

04:49

90
277148

Mas a maioria das crianças
não ouve falar de pessoas assim.
04:51
But most kids don't hear
about people like this.
91
279119
2706
Elas só ouvem que vão ter que escolher.
04:53
All they hear
92
281849
2126
04:55
is that they're going to have to choose.
93
283999
2300
Mas a coisa vai além disso.
04:59
But it's more than that.
94
287418
1961
Essa ideia de ter
um foco específico na vida
05:01
The notion of the narrowly focused life
95
289403
2992
é amplamente romantizada em nossa cultura,
05:04
is highly romanticized in our culture.
96
292419
2372
essa ideia de destino
ou de vocação específica,
05:07
It's this idea of destiny
or the one true calling,
97
295218
4180
a ideia de que cada um de nós
tem uma única coisa especial
05:11
the idea that we each have one great thing
98
299422
2757
que nascemos para fazer aqui na Terra,
05:14
we are meant to do
during our time on this earth,
99
302203
2333
e de que precisamos
descobrir que coisa é essa
05:16
and you need to figure out
what that thing is
100
304560
2883
e dedicar nossa vida a ela.
05:19
and devote your life to it.
101
307467
2485
Mas e se você não funcionar desse jeito?
05:23
But what if you're someone
who isn't wired this way?
102
311135
3111
E se você tiver curiosidade
por várias áreas diferentes
05:26
What if there are a lot of different
subjects that you're curious about,
103
314999
3405
e houver várias coisas diferentes
que você queira fazer?
05:30
and many different things you want to do?
104
318428
2025
Bem, não há espaço pra você
nesse tipo de cultura.
05:33
Well, there is no room for someone
like you in this framework.
105
321246
3877
Talvez, então, você se sinta sozinho,
05:37
And so you might feel alone.
106
325814
1971
como se não tivesse um propósito na vida
05:40
You might feel like you don't
have a purpose.
107
328412
2213
e como se houvesse algo
de errado com você.
05:43
And you might feel like
there's something wrong with you.

É uma palavra um pouco complicada.
06:07
It's a mouthful to say.
114
355852
1946
Fica mais fácil
se a dividirmos em duas partes:
06:09
It might help if you break it up
into three parts:
115
357822
2850
"multi" e "potencial".
06:12
multi, potential, and ite.
116
360696

como "polímata", uma pessoa renascentista.
06:19

Na verdade, no período renascentista,

It's easy to see your multipotentiality
126
393017
2397
É fácil ver sua multipotencialidade

que você tenha que superar,
06:47

Innovation happens at the intersections.

É dela que nascem as novas ideias.
07:48
That's where the new ideas come from.
143

E os multipotenciais,
com toda a sua bagagem,
07:51
And multipotentialites,
with all of their backgrounds,
144
459519

são capazes de acessar
muitos desses pontos de interseção.
07:54
are able to access a lot of these
points of intersection.

The second multipotentialite superpower
146
467999
3072
O segundo superpoder dos multipotenciais
é o aprendizado rápido.
08:03
is rapid learning.
147
471095
1491
Quando nós, multipotenciais,
nos interessamos por algo,
08:05
When multipotentialites
become interested in something,
148
473404
2862
nós nos dedicamos muito.
08:08
we go hard.
149
476290
2055
Observamos tudo
que esteja ao nosso alcance,
08:10
We observe everything
we can get our hands on.
150
478369
2771
e estamos acostumados a ser iniciantes
08:13
We're also used to being beginners,
151
481164
1743
por já termos sido
iniciantes muitas vezes,
08:14
because we've been beginners
so many times in the past,
152
482931
3122
08:18
and this means that we're less afraid
of trying new things
153
486077
3279
e isso significa que temos menos medo
de tentar coisas novas
e de sair da nossa zona de conforto.
08:21
and stepping out of our comfort zones.
154
489380
2382
Além disso, muitas habilidades
podem ser aplicadas em diversas áreas,
08:23
What's more, many skills
are transferable across disciplines,
155
491786
4029
e trazemos tudo que aprendemos
para cada nova área de interesse.
08:27
and we bring everything we've learned
to every new area we pursue,
156
495839
3855
Assim, raramente começamos do zero.
08:31
so we're rarely starting from scratch.

lives and careers

que estejam alinhadas

11:13
that are aligned with how we're wired.
205
661559

Infelizmente, os multipotenciais
têm sido amplamente incentivados
11:16
And sadly, multipotentialites
are largely being encouraged
206
664092
4418
simplesmente a serem mais especialistas.
11:20
simply to be more
like their specialist peers.
207

Então, depois do que eu disse,
11:24
So with that said,
208
672621

se há uma coisa que vocês podem
aproveitar dessa palestra,
11:27
if there is one thing
you take away from this talk,
209
675124
3071
espero que seja isto:
11:30
I hope that it is this:
210
678219
3098
abrace sua maneira de funcionar,
seja ela como for.
11:33
embrace your inner wiring,
whatever that may be.
211
681341
3362
Se for um especialista convicto,
então, seja como for, se especialize.
11:37
If you're a specialist at heart,
212
685687
2168
11:39
then by all means, specialize.
213
687879
1999
É assim que dará o melhor de si.
11:41
That is where you'll do your best work.
214
689902
2197
Mas, para os multipotenciais
aqui presentes,
11:44
But to the multipotentialites in the room,
215
692624
2980
inclusive os que perceberam que são assim
durante os últimos 12 minutos...
11:47
including those of you
who may have just realized
216
695628
2317
11:49
in the last 12 minutes that you are one --

218
700009

to you I say:
219
701638
2152
abracem suas múltiplas paixões.
11:55
embrace your many passions.
220
703814
2102
Sigam sua curiosidade,
dentro daquela toca do coelho.
11:58
Follow your curiosity
down those rabbit holes.
221
706614
3283
Explorem suas interseções.
12:02
Explore your intersections.
222
710643
2024
Abraçar nossa forma de funcionar nos leva
a ter uma vida mais feliz e autêntica.
12:06
Embracing our inner wiring leads
to a happier, more authentic life.
223
714264
4762
E, quem sabe, o mais importante
seja o seguinte:
12:12
And perhaps more importantly --
224
720028
2717
multipotenciais, o mundo precisa de nós.
12:14
multipotentialites, the world needs us.
