ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Gregory Heyworth - Textual scientist
Gregory Heyworth uses spectral imaging technology to uncover lost classics that could rewrite history.

Why you should listen

Gregory Heyworth is associate professor of English at the University of Mississippi. He is a medievalist and founder of the discipline of textual science.

Professor Heyworth directs the Lazarus Project, a not-for-profit initiative to restore damaged and illegible cultural heritage objects, especially manuscripts and maps, using spectral imaging technology. He has helped recover numerous important objects including the Vercelli Book and the 1491 Martellus Map.

Currently he is working on a project to recover the manuscript fragments of the lost Cathedral Library of Chartres, France, bombed in WWII.

Gregory Heyworth: How I'm discovering the secrets of ancient texts

02:22
of previously unknown texts

de textos anteriormente desconhecidos
02:25
could radically transform
our knowledge of the past.
43
133200

poderia transformar radicalmente
nosso conhecimento do passado.
02:30
Imagine what unknown classics
we would discover
44
138280
4016
Imagine os clássicos desconhecidos
que poderíamos descobrir
02:34
which would rewrite the canons
of literature, history,
45
142320
3336
e que poderiam reescrever os cânones
da literatura, da história,
02:37
philosophy, music --
46
145680
1440
da filosofia, da música,
02:39
or, more provocatively, that could
rewrite our cultural identities,
47
147840
3536
ou, ouso provocar, que poderiam
reescrever nossas identidades culturais,
02:43
building new bridges
between people and culture.
48
151400
3360
construir mais pontes
entre pessoas e culturas.
02:47
These are the questions
that transformed me
49
155520
2536
Essas perguntas me transformaram
02:50
from a medieval scholar,
a reader of texts,
50
158080
2816
de um acadêmico medieval,
leitor de textos,
02:52
into a textual scientist.
51
160920
1800
em um cientista de textos.
02:56
What an unsatisfying word "reader" is.
52
164120
2296
A palavra "leitor" não era suficiente.
02:58
For me, it conjures up
images of passivity,
53
166440
2576
Para mim, evoca uma imagem de passividade,
03:01
of someone sitting idly in an armchair
54
169040
2416
de alguém sentado, ocioso, numa poltrona,
03:03
waiting for knowledge to come to him
55
171480
2296
esperando que o conhecimento
chegue até ele,
03:05
in a neat little parcel.
56
173800
1696
embrulhado para presente.
03:07
How much better to be
a participant in the past,
57
175520
3016
Muito melhor é participar do passado,
03:10
an adventurer in an undiscovered country,
58
178560
3176
ser um aventureiro
em lugares desconhecidos,
03:13
searching for the hidden text.
59
181760
2400
procurando um texto escondido.
03:17
As an academic, I was a mere reader.
60
185360
2440
Enquanto acadêmico, eu era um mero leitor.
03:20
I read and taught the same classics
61
188560
2416
Lia e ensinava os mesmos clássicos
03:23
that people had been reading
and teaching for hundreds of years --
62
191000
3136
que as pessoas vinham lendo
e ensinando há centenas de anos:
03:26
Virgil, Ovid, Chaucer, Petrarch --
63
194160
3016
Virgílio, Ovídio, Chaucer, Petrarca.
03:29
and with every scholarly article
that I published
64
197200
2336
Com cada artigo científico que publicava,
03:31
I added to human knowledge
in ever-diminishing slivers of insight.
65
199560
3200
contribuía para o conhecimento humano,
com cada vez menos sacadas brilhantes.
03:36
What I wanted to be
66
204760
1576
O que eu queria ser
03:38
was an archaeologist of the past,
67
206360
2096
era um arqueólogo do passado,
03:40
a discoverer of literature,
68
208480
1576
um descobridor de literaturas,
03:42
an Indiana Jones without the whip --
69
210080
1896
o Indiana Jones sem o chicote.
03:44
or, actually, with the whip.
70
212000
1496
Ou, melhor, com o chicote.
03:45
(Laughter)
71
213520
1216
(Risos)
03:46
And I wanted it not just for myself
but I wanted it for my students as well.
72
214760
3696
Não queria isso só para mim,
queria para meus alunos também.
03:50
And so six years ago,
I changed the direction of my career.
73
218480
3896
Então, seis anos atrás,
mudei minha carreira de direção.
03:54
At the time, I was working
on "The Chess of Love,"
74
222400
3016
Na época, estava trabalhando
em "O xadrez do amor",
03:57
the last important long poem
of the European Middle Ages
75
225440
2856
o último longo poema
europeu da Idade Média
04:00
never to have been edited.
76
228320
1616
a ser editado.
04:01
And it wasn't edited because
it existed in only one manuscript
77
229960
3016
Não foi editado porque
só existia um manuscrito
04:05
which was so badly damaged
during the firebombing of Dresden
78
233000
3256
o qual fora tão danificado
no bombardeio de Dresden,
04:08
in World War II
79
236280
1216
durante a Segunda Grande Guerra,
04:09
that generations of scholars
had pronounced it lost.
80
237520
2880
que gerações de estudiosos
o consideraram perdido.
04:13
For five years, I had been working
with an ultraviolet lamp
81
241400
3456
Por cinco anos, eu trabalhei
com uma lâmpada ultravioleta
04:16
trying to recover traces of the writing
82
244880
1896
tentando recuperar traços da escrita
04:18
and I'd gone about as far
as technology at the time
83
246800
2416
e tinha ido tão longe quanto
a tecnologia da época
04:21
could actually take me.
84
249240
1376
podia me levar.
04:22
And so I did what many people do.
85
250640
2096
Fiz o que muita gente faz.
04:24
I went online,
86
252760
2016
Fui à internet
04:26
and there I learned about
87
254800
1736
e aprendi
04:28
how multispectral imaging had been used
to recover two lost treatises
88
256560
4576
sobre como imagens multiespectrais
foram usadas para recuperar dois tratados
04:33
of the famed Greek
mathematician Archimedes
89
261160
2896
do famoso matemático grego Arquimedes
04:36
from a 13th-century palimpsest.
90
264080
1536
em um palimpsesto do século 13.
04:37
A palimpsest is a manuscript
which has been erased and overwritten.
91
265640
3280
Palimpsesto é um manuscrito
que foi apagado e reescrito.
04:42
And so, out of the blue,
92
270200
1256
Então, de repente,
04:43
I decided to write
to the lead imaging scientist
93
271480
3056
decidi escrever para o principal
cientista dessas imagens
04:46
on the Archimedes palimpsest project,
94
274560
2216
no projeto do palimpsesto de Arquimedes,
04:48
Professor Roger Easton,
95
276800
1496
o professor Roger Easton,
04:50
with a plan and a plea.
96
278320
1816
com um plano e um apelo.
04:52
And to my surprise,
he actually wrote back.
97
280160
2040
Para minha surpresa, ele respondeu.
04:56
With his help, I was able
to win a grant from the US government
98
284000
3656
Com sua ajuda, pude ganhar
um prêmio do governo norte-americano
04:59
to build a transportable,
multispectral imaging lab,
99
287680
4016
para construir um laboratório portátil
de imagens multiespectrais.
05:03
And with this lab, I transformed
what was a charred and faded mess
100
291720
4816
Com esse laboratório, transformei
uma bagunça chamuscada e desgastada
05:08
into a new medieval classic.
101
296560
2000
em um clássico medieval.
05:11
So how does multispectral
imaging actually work?
102
299360
2776
Como funcionam
as imagens multiespectrais?
05:14
Well, the idea
behind multispectral imaging
103
302160
2456
A ideia por trás
das imagens multiespectrais
05:16
is something that anyone who is familiar
with infrared night vision goggles
104
304640
4296
é algo que qualquer um que conheça
óculos noturnos com infravermelho
poderá entender imediatamente:
05:20
will immediately appreciate:
105
308960
1376
05:22
that what we can see
in the visible spectrum of light
106
310360
2496
o que podemos ver
no espectro de luz visível
05:24
is only a tiny fraction
of what's actually there.
107
312880
2320
é só uma pequena fração do que está lá.
05:27
The same is true with invisible writing.
108
315720
2200
O mesmo se aplica à escrita invisível.
05:31
Our system uses 12 wavelengths of light
109
319280
4176
Nosso sistema usa
12 comprimentos de onda de luz
05:35
between the ultraviolet and the infrared,
110
323480
2496
entre ultravioleta e infravermelho.
05:38
and these are shown down
onto the manuscript from above
111
326000
3056
Os manuscritos são
expostos a eles, vindos de cima,
05:41
from banks of LEDs,
112
329080
1616
de um conjunto de luzes de LED,
05:42
and another multispectral light source
113
330720
1856
e outra fonte de luz multiespectral
05:44
which comes up through
the individual leaves of the manuscript.
114
332600
2953
que passa por cada folha do manuscrito.
05:47
Up to 35 images per sequence
per leaf are imaged this way
115
335577
4519
Até 35 imagens por sequência
por página são registradas assim,
05:52
using a high-powered digital camera
equipped with a lens
116
340120
2620
usando uma câmera digital poderosa

05:54
which is made out of quartz.
117

feitas de quartzo.
05:56
There are about five
of these in the world.
118
344760
2096
Há cerca de cinco dessas no mundo.
05:58
And once we capture these images,
119
346880
1816
Quando capturamos essas imagens,
06:00
we feed them through
statistical algorithms
120
348720
2056
elas são fornecidas
a algoritmos estatísticos
06:02
to further enhance and clarify them,
121

2496
para melhorar sua definição e clareza.
06:05

06:14
The results can be spectacular.
125
362040
2296
Os resultados são espetaculares.
06:16
You may already have heard
of what's been done
126
364360
2176
Talvez já tenham ouvido falar
do que foi feito
06:18
for the Dead Sea Scrolls,
127
366560
1376
pelos Manuscritos do Mar Morto
06:19
which are slowly gelatinizing.
128

06:26
of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
130

dos Manuscritos do Mar Morto.
06:28
You may not be aware, however,
131
376880
1456
Talvez vocês não saibam, porém,
06:30
of other Biblical texts
that are in jeopardy.
132
378360
2736
de outros textos bíblicos
que estão em perigo.
06:33
Here, for example,
is a leaf from a manuscript
133
381120
3416
Por exemplo, essa folha de um manuscrito
06:36
that we imaged,
134
384560
1776
que registramos
06:38
which is perhaps the most valuable
Christian Bible in the world.
135
386360
3880
e que é talvez a bíblia cristã
mais valiosa do mundo.
06:42
The Codex Vercellensis is the oldest
translation of the Gospels into Latin,
136
390880
5776
O Codex Vercellensis é a mais antiga
tradução dos evangelhos para o latim
06:48
and it dates from the first half
of the fourth century.
137
396680
2600
e data da primeira metade do século 4.
06:52
This is the closest we can come
138
400560
2256
É o mais próximo que conseguimos chegar
06:54
to the Bible at the time
of the foundation of Christendom
139
402840
3936
da bíblia no período
da fundação do reino cristão
06:58
under Emperor Constantine,

sob o imperador Constantino.
07:00
and at the time also
of the Council of Nicaea,
141

when the basic creed of Christianity
was being agreed upon.
142

quando entrou-se em acordo
sobre o credo básico do cristianismo.
07:06
This manuscript, unfortunately,
has been very badly damaged,
143
414520
3256
Esse manuscrito, infelizmente,
encontra-se muito danificado.
07:09
and it's damaged because for centuries
144
417800
2216
Danificado graças a séculos
07:12
it had been used and handled
145
420040

In fact, that purple splotch

Having a lab that can travel

153
447800

Levar um laboratório portátil

07:43
is only part of the solution.
154
451280

é só parte da solução.
07:45
The technology is expensive and very rare,
155
453480
2856
A tecnologia é cara e muito rara,
07:48
and the imaging and image
processing skills are esoteric.
156
456360
3216
as habilidades para registrar e processar
as imagens são complexas.
Isso signifia que montar
objetos recuperados
07:51
That means that mounting recoveries
157
459600
1696
07:53
is beyond the reach of most researchers
and all but the wealthiest institutions.
158
461320
4896
está fora do alcance
da maioria dos pesquisadores,
exceto aqueles
nas instituições mais ricas.
07:58
That's why I founded the Lazarus Project,
159

Por isso fundei o "Lazarus Project",
08:01
a not-for-profit initiative
160
469040
1656
uma organização sem fins lucrativos
08:02
to bring multispectral imaging
to individual researchers
161
470720
3976
para levar imagens multiespectrais
para pesquisadores individuais
08:06
and smaller institutions
at little or no cost whatsoever.

Over the past five years,
163
479560
1616
No curso dos últimos cinco anos,
08:13
our team of imaging scientists,
scholars and students
164
481200
3856
nosso time de cientistas da imagem,
estudiosos e estudantes
08:17
has travelled to seven different countries
165
485080
2176
viajaram para sete países diferentes
08:19
and have recovered some of the world's
most valuable damaged manuscripts,
166
487280
3856
e recuperaram alguns dos manuscritos
mais valiosos do mundo,
inclusive o Livro Vercelli,
o livro mais antigo escrito em inglês,
08:23
included the Vercelli Book,
which is the oldest book of English,
167
491160
3000
08:26
the Black Book of Carmarthen,
the oldest book of Welsh,
168
494184
2616
o Livro Negro de Carmarthen,
o livro mais antigo em gaulês,
08:28
and some of the most valuable
earliest Gospels

08:36
So, spectral imaging
can recover lost texts.
171
504600
2960
O registro de imagens espectral
pode recuperar textos perdidos,
08:40
More subtly, though, it can recover
a second story behind every object,
172
508360
5096
ou, digamos, recuperar uma segunda
história por trás de todo objeto,
08:45
the story of how, when
and by whom a text was created,
173
513480
4696
a história de como, quando
e por quem o texto foi criado.
08:50
and, sometimes, what the author
was thinking at the time he wrote.
174
518200
3400
Algumas vezes, o que o autor
pensava quando o escreveu.
08:54
Take, for example, a draft
of the Declaration of Independence
175
522600
3096
Um exemplo é um esboço
da Declaração de Independência,
08:57
written in Thomas Jefferson's own hand,
176
525720
2416
escrito à mão por Thomas Jefferson,
09:00
which some colleagues of mine
imaged a few years ago
177
528160
2429
que alguns colegas registraram
há alguns anos
09:02
at the Library of Congress.
178
530613
1320
na biblioteca do Congresso.
Os curadores tinham percebido
que uma palavra por todo o documento
09:04
Curators had noticed
that one word throughout
179
532360
2696
09:07
had been scratched out and overwritten.
180
535080
2376
havia sido riscada e sobrescrita.
09:09
The word overwritten was "citizens."
181
537480
2080
A palavra sobrescrita era "cidadãos".
09:12
Perhaps you can guess
what the word underneath was.
182
540240
2600
Talvez vocês consigam adivinhar
a palavra que estava por baixo.
09:15
"Subjects."
183
543960
1416
"Súditos".
09:17
There, ladies and gentlemen,
is American democracy
184
545400
2816
Aí está, senhoras e senhores,
a democracia norte-americana
09:20
evolving under the hand
of Thomas Jefferson.
185
548240
2080
evoluindo sob a mão de Thomas Jefferson.
09:23
Or consider the 1491 Martellus Map,
186
551360
3856
Ou considerem o mapa Martellus, de 1491,
09:27
which we imaged
at Yale's Beinecke Library.
187
555240
2336
que registramos
na Biblioteca Beinecke de Yale.
09:29
This was the map
that Columbus likely consulted
188
557600
2456
Esse era o mapa que Colombo
provavelmente consultou
09:32
before he traveled to the New World
189
560080
1696
antes de viajar para o Novo Mundo
09:33
and which gave him his idea
of what Asia looked like
190
561800
2736
e que lhe deu a ideia
de como seria a Ásia
09:36
and where Japan was located.
191
564560
1600
e onde o Japão estava localizado.
09:39
The problem with this map
is that its inks and pigments
192
567640
3016
O problema com esse mapa
é que suas tintas e pigmentos
09:42
had so degraded over time
193
570680
2096
tinham se desgastado tanto
09:44
that this large, nearly seven-foot map,
194
572800
2136
que esse mapa grande, de dois metros,
09:46
made the world look like a giant desert.
195
574960
2080
fazia o mundo parecer um grande deserto.
09:49
Until now, we had very little idea,
detailed idea, that is,
196
577520
3616
Até agora, sabíamos pouco,
poucos detalhes,
09:53
of what Columbus knew of the world
197
581160
1656
do que Colombo sabia do mundo
09:54
and how world cultures were represented.
198
582840
1920
e como as culturas do mundo
eram representadas.
09:57
The main legend of the map
was entirely illegible under normal light.
199
585240
4136
A principal legenda do mapa era totalmente
ilegível sob luz normal.
10:01
Ultraviolet did very little for it.
200
589400
2256
Luz ultravioleta ajudava muito pouco.
10:03
Multispectral gave us everything.
201
591680
2000
A multiespectral nos possibilitou tudo.
10:06
In Asia, we learned of monsters
with ears so long
202
594640
3576
Na Ásia, conhecemos monstros
com orelhas tão longas
10:10
that they could cover
the creature's entire body.
203
598240
2320
que poderiam cobrir
todo o corpo da criatura.
10:13
In Africa, about a snake
who could cause the ground to smoke.
204
601040
4400
Na África, havia uma cobra
que poderia fazer o chão soltar fumaça.
Como a luz das estrelas,
que pode nos mostrar imagens
10:18
Like starlight, which can convey images
205
606680
2256
10:20
of the way the Universe
looked in the distant past,
206
608960
2576
de como o universo
parecia ser num passado distante,
10:23
so multispectral light can take us back
to the first stuttering moments
207
611560
3896
a luz multiespectral pode nos levar
aos primeiros momentos
10:27
of an object's creation.
208
615480
1280
da criação de um objeto.
10:29
Through this lens, we witness
the mistakes, the changes of mind,
209
617480
3936
Através dessas lentes, testemunhamos
os erros, as mudanças de ideia,
10:33
the naïvetés, the uncensored thoughts,
210
621440
2896
as ingenuidades,
os pensamentos sem censura,
10:36
the imperfections of the human imagination
211
624360
2216
as imperfeições da imaginação humana
10:38
that allow these hallowed objects
and their authors
212
626600
2816
que permitem que esses objetos
consagrados e seus autores
10:41
to become more real,
213
629440
1656
tornem-se mais reais,
10:43
that make history closer to us.
214
631120
2520
que tornam a história mais próxima de nós.
10:46
What about the future?
215
634760
1280
E o futuro?
10:48
There's so much of the past,
216
636480
2176
Há tanto do passado,
10:50
and so few people
with the skills to rescue it
217
638680
3216
e tão poucas pessoas
têm as habilidades para recuperá-lo
10:53
before these objects disappear forever.
218
641920
3880
antes que esses objetos
desapareçam pra sempre.
10:58
That's why I have begun to teach
this new hybrid discipline
219
646480
3296
Por isso comecei a ensinar
essa nova disciplina híbrida
11:01
that I call "textual science."
220
649800
1896
que chamo de "ciência do texto".
11:03
Textual science is a marriage
221
651720
1616
A ciência do texto é um casamento
11:05
of the traditional skills
of a literary scholar --
222
653360
2376
entre habilidades tradicionais
de um estudioso literato,
11:07
the ability to read old languages
and old handwriting,
223
655760
2536
a habilidade de ler línguas antigas

11:10
the knowledge of how texts are made

11:12
in order to be able
to place and date them --
225

2136
para podermos localizar e datá-los,
11:14
with new techniques like imaging science,
226

com novas técnicas
como a ciência da imagem,
