Dan Bricklin - Software pioneer
Dan Bricklin helped fuel the rapid growth of the personal computer industry.

Why you should listen

Dan Bricklin is best known for codeveloping VisiCalc, the pioneering electronic spreadsheet, while he was a student at the Harvard Business School. VisiCalc, codeveloped with his friend Bob Frankston whom he met at MIT, is widely credited for fueling the rapid growth of the personal computer industry.

Bricklin helps create products that make it easier for business people to build mobile applications in his current role as CTO of Alpha Software Corporation. He is also president of Software Garden, Inc., a small consulting firm and developer of software applications that he founded in 1985. Its most popular products are Note Taker HD for the Apple iPad and before that Dan Bricklin's Demo Program for IBM PCs. In the past, Bricklin was cofounder of pen computer application developer Slate Corporation and founder of website builder developer Trellix Corporation.

How many of you have used
an electronic spreadsheet,
0
760
2975
Quantos de vocês já usaram
uma planilha eletrônica,
00:15
like Microsoft Excel?
1
3760
1480
como o Microsoft Excel?
00:18
Very good.
2
6240
1256
Muito bem.
00:19
Now, how many of you have run a business
with a spreadsheet by hand,
3
7520
4576
E quantos de vocês já controlaram
um negócio com uma planilha manual,
00:24
like my dad did for his small
printing business in Philadelphia?
4
12120
3080
como meu pai fazia
em sua pequena gráfica na Filadélfia?
00:28
A lot less.
5
16160
1160
Bem menos.
00:29
Well, that's the way it was done
for hundreds of years.
6
17920
2600
Bem, foi feito assim por centenas de anos.
00:33
In early 1978,
I started working on an idea
7
21480
3016
No início de 1978,
comecei a trabalhar em uma ideia
00:36
that eventually became VisiCalc.
8
24520
2400
que por fim se tornou o VisiCalc.
00:39
And the next year it shipped
9
27480
1656
E no ano seguinte ele foi lançado
00:41
running on something new
called an Apple II personal computer.
10
29160
3279
executando em algo novo chamado
computador pessoal Apple II.
00:45
You could tell that things
had really changed when, six years later,
11
33240
4056
Podemos dizer que as coisas realmente
mudaram, quando, seis anos depois,
00:49
the Wall Street Journal ran an editorial
12
37320
2176
o Wall Street Journal
publicou um editorial
00:51
that assumed you knew what VisiCalc was
and maybe even were using it.
13
39520
3280
presumindo que você sabia o que era
o VisiCalc e talvez até já o usasse.
00:55
Steve Jobs back in 1990
14
43760
2960
Em 1990, Steve Jobs disse:
00:59
said that "spreadsheets
propelled the industry forward."
15
47160
3240
"As planilhas impulsionaram a indústria".
01:02
"VisiCalc propelled the success of Apple
more than any other single event."
16
50880
3920
"O VisiCalc impulsionou o sucesso da Apple
mais do que qualquer outra coisa."
01:07
On a more personal note,
17
55440
1160
Em uma nota mais pessoal, Steve disse:
01:09
Steve said, "If VisiCalc had been written
for some other computer,
18
57600
3136
"Se o VisiCalc tivesse sido escrito
para outro computador,
01:12
you'd be interviewing
somebody else right now."
19
60760
2200
vocês estariam entrevistando
outra pessoa agora".
01:15
So, VisiCalc was instrumental in getting
personal computers on business desks.
20
63360
6376
Então, o VisiCalc foi fundamental
para levar computadores pessoais
às mesas trabalho.
01:21
How did it come about?
21
69760
1160
Como isso aconteceu?
01:23
What was it? What did I go through
to make it be what it was?
22
71680
2920
O que ele era? Pelo que eu passei
para fazê-lo ser o que era?
01:27
Well, I first learned to program
back in 1966, when I was 15 --
23
75920
5336
Bem, eu aprendi a programar
em 1966, quando tinha 15 anos,
01:33
just a couple months
after this photo was taken.
24
81280
2240
apenas alguns meses antes
desta foto ser tirada.
01:36
Few high schoolers had access
to computers in those days.
25
84200
2960
Poucos alunos do ensino médio
tinham acesso a computadores na época.
01:39
But through luck
and an awful lot of perseverance,
26
87560
3496
Mas com sorte e muita perseverança,
01:43
I was able to get
computer time around the city.
27
91080
2240
eu conseguia tempo
em computadores pela cidade.
01:46
After sleeping in the mud at Woodstock,
I went off to MIT to go to college,
28
94200
4880
Depois de dormir na lama em Woodstock,
fui fazer faculdade no MIT,
01:51
where to make money,
I worked on the Multics Project.
29
99520
3080
onde, para ganhar dinheiro,
trabalhei no projeto Multics.
01:55
Multics was a trailblazing
interactive time-sharing system.
30
103320
5016
Multics era um sistema pioneiro
e interativo de tempo compartilhado.
02:00
Have you heard of the Linux
and Unix operating systems?
31
108360
3176
Já ouviram falar nos sistemas
operacionais Linux e Unix?
02:03
They came from Multics.
32
111560
1240
Eles vieram do Multics.
Eu trabalhei nas versões do Multics
02:05
I worked on the Multics versions
33
113320
2296
02:07
of what are known
as interpreted computer languages,
34
115640
3816
conhecidas como linguagens
de computador interpretadas,
02:11
that are used by people
in noncomputer fields
35
119480
2456
usadas por pessoas
em áreas não computacionais
02:13
to do their calculations
while seated at a computer terminal.
36
121960
3000
para fazer cálculos
em um terminal de computador.
02:17
After I graduated from MIT,
37
125560
2256
Depois de me formar no MIT,
02:19
I went to work for
Digital Equipment Corporation.
38
127840
2840
fui trabalhar na Digital
Equipment Corporation.
02:23
At DEC, I worked on software
39
131320
3176
Na Digital, trabalhei em software
02:26
for the new area
of computerized typesetting.
40
134520
2840
para a nova área de composição
tipográfica computadorizada.
02:29
I helped newspapers
replace their reporters' typewriters
41
137800
4336
Ajudei os jornais a substituírem
as máquinas de escrever dos repórteres
02:34
with computer terminals.
42
142160
1200
por terminais de computador.
02:35
I'd write software
43
143880
1216
Eu escrevia programas
02:37
and then I'd go out in the field
to places like the Kansas City Star,
44
145120
3696
e depois ia para o campo,
em jornais como o Kansas City Star,
02:40
where I would train users
and get feedback.
45
148840
2416
para treinar usuários e receber feedback.
02:43
This was real-world experience
46
151280
1856
Eram experiências do mundo real,
02:45
that is quite different
than what I saw in the lab at MIT.
47
153160
3240
bem diferente do que eu tinha visto
no laboratório do MIT.
02:49
After that, I was project leader
48
157880
2616
Depois disso, fui líder de projeto
02:52
of the software for DEC's first
word processor, again a new field.
49
160520
4800
do primeiro processador de textos
da Digital, mais uma vez um campo novo.
02:57
Like with typesetting, the important thing
was crafting a user interface
50
165720
5496
Assim como na composição tipográfica,
o importante era criar
uma interface de usuário
03:03
that was both natural and efficient
for noncomputer people to use.
51
171240
4080
que fosse natural e eficiente para
ser usada por pessoas de outras áreas.
03:08
After I was at DEC, I went
to work for a small company
52
176360
3976
Depois da Digital, fui trabalhar
em uma pequena empresa
03:12
that made microprocessor-based electronic
cash registers for the fast-food industry.
53
180360
6120
que produzia caixas-registradoras,
baseadas em microprocessores eletrônicos,
para a indústria de fast-food.
03:19
But I had always wanted to start
a company with my friend Bob Frankston
54
187360
3696
Mas eu sempre quis iniciar uma empresa
com meu amigo Bob Frankston,
03:23
that I met on the Multics project at MIT.
55
191080
2376
que conheci no projeto Multics no MIT.
03:25
So I decided to go back to school to learn
as much as I could about business.
56
193480
3696
Então decidi voltar à escola e aprender
tudo que pudesse sobre negócios.
Em meados de 1977,
03:29
And in the fall of 1977,
57
197200
2776
03:32
I entered the MBA program
at Harvard Business School.
58
200000
3000
entrei em um programa de MBA
na Harvard Business School.
03:35
I was one of the few
percentage of students
59
203840
2496
Eu era um dos poucos alunos
03:38
who had a background
in computer programming.
60
206360
2840
com alguma experiência em programação.
03:42
There's a picture of me from the yearbook
sitting in the front row.
61
210080
3176
Esta é uma foto minha, do livro do ano,
sentado na primeira fila.
(Risos)
03:45
(Laughter)
62
213280
1016
Em Harvard, aprendemos
com estudo de casos.
03:46
Now, at Harvard,
we learned by the case method.
63
214320
2616
03:48
We'd do about three cases a day.
64
216960
1936
Estudávamos em torno
de três casos por dia.
03:50
Cases consist of up to a few dozen pages
describing particular business situations.
65
218920
5720
Cada caso consistia em dezenas de páginas
que descreviam situações
específicas de negócios.
03:57
They often have exhibits,
and exhibits often have words and numbers
66
225600
4576
Em geral eles apresentam exemplos,
que contêm palavras e números
04:02
laid out in ways that make sense
for the particular situation.
67
230200
3160
colocados de forma a fazerem sentido
na situação específica.
04:05
They're usually all somewhat different.
68
233840
1936
Geralmente são um pouco diferentes.
04:07
Here's my homework.
69
235800
1216
Esta é minha tarefa de casa.
04:09
Again, numbers, words,
laid out in ways that made sense.
70
237040
3176
De novo, números, palavras,
colocadas de forma a fazerem sentido.
04:12
Lots of calculations --
we got really close to our calculators.
71
240240
4080
Muitos cálculos; nós ficávamos
realmente íntimos de nossas calculadoras.
04:16
In fact, here's my calculator.
72
244720
1880
De fato, aqui está minha calculadora.
04:20
For Halloween, I went
dressed up as a calculator.
73
248200
2776
No Halloween, saí vestido de calculadora.
04:23
(Laughter)
74
251000
1440
(Risos)
04:25
At the beginning of each class,
the professor would call on somebody
75
253785
3191
No início de cada aula, o professor
chamava alguém para apresentar o caso.
04:29
to present the case.
76
257000
1279
04:31
What they would do is
they would explain what was going on
77
259079
2777
O aluno explicava o que estava acontecendo
04:33
and then dictate information
that the professor would transcribe
78
261880
3736
e ditava informações
que o professor transcrevia
04:37
onto the many motorized blackboards
in the front of the class,
79
265640
2905
nos vários quadros motorizados
na frente da sala,
e então tínhamos uma discussão.
04:40
and then we'd have a discussion.
80
268569
1527
04:42
One of the really frustrating things
is when you've done all your homework,
81
270120
4456
Era realmente frustrante quando você
tinha feito toda a tarefa de casa
04:46
you come in the next day
only to find out that you made an error
82
274600
3016
só para descobrir no dia seguinte
que tinha cometido um erro
04:49
and all of the other numbers
you did were wrong.
83
277640
2536
e todos os outros números estavam errados.
04:52
And you couldn't participate as well.
84
280200
1776
Você não podia participar.
04:54
And we were marked by class participation.
85
282000
2240
E éramos avaliados
pela participação na aula.
04:57
So, sitting there with 87 other people
in the class, I got to daydream a lot.
86
285320
4920
Então, sentado na sala de aula
com outras 87 pessoas, eu devaneava muito.
05:03
Most programmers in those days
worked on mainframes,
87
291280
3856
A maioria dos programadores na época
trabalhava com computador de grande porte,
05:07
building things like inventory systems,
payroll systems and bill-paying systems.
88
295160
6336
construindo sistemas de inventário,
de folhas de pagamento e de cobranças.
Mas eu tinha trabalhado
em processamento interativo de texto
05:13
But I had worked
on interactive word processing
89
301520
2496
05:16
and on-demand personal computation.
90
304040
2096
e computação pessoal sob demanda.
05:18
Instead of thinking
about paper printouts and punch cards,
91
306160
4280
Em vez de pensar em listagens
e cartões perfurados,
05:22
I imagined a magic blackboard
92
310880
2776
eu imaginava um quadro mágico
05:25
that if you erased one number
and wrote a new thing in,
93
313680
3376
no qual, se você apagasse um número
e escrevesse outra coisa no lugar,
05:29
all of the other numbers
would automatically change,
94
317080
2856
todos os outros números
trocariam automaticamente,
05:31
like word processing with numbers.
95
319960
1760
como processamento de texto com números.
Imaginei minha calculadora
com um mouse embaixo
05:34
I imagined that my calculator
had mouse hardware on the bottom of it
96
322600
4240
05:39
and a head-up display,
like in a fighter plane.
97
327240
2960
e uma tela em um painel,
como em um avião de guerra.
05:42
And I could type some numbers in,
and circle it, and press the sum button.
98
330720
4136
Eu poderia digitar alguns números,
circulá-los, e pressionar o botão de soma.
05:46
And right in the middle of a negotiation
I'd be able to get the answer.
99
334880
3736
E durante uma negociação
eu poderia ter a resposta.
05:50
Now I just had to take my fantasy
and turn it into reality.
100
338640
3000
Agora eu só precisava transformar
minha fantasia em realidade.
05:54
My father taught me about prototyping.
101
342640
2440
Meu pai me ensinou sobre prototipação.
05:57
He showed me mock-ups
102
345560
1616
Ele me mostrou protótipos
05:59
that he'd make to figure out
the placement on the page
103
347200
3336
que tinha feito para visualizar
o posicionamento na página
06:02
for the things for brochures
that he was printing.
104
350560
2536
para as brochuras
que ele estava imprimindo.
06:05
And he'd use it
to get feedback from customers
105
353120
2936
Ele usava isso para receber
feedback dos clientes
06:08
and OKs before he sent the job
off to the presses.
106
356080
3600
e confirmações antes de mandar
o trabalho para a impressão.
06:12
The act of making a simple, working
version of what you're trying to build
107
360440
5096
Fazer uma versão simples e funcional
do que você está tentando construir
06:17
forces you to uncover key problems.
108
365560
2320
te obriga a descobrir problemas chave.
06:20
And it lets you find solutions
to those problems much less expensively.
109
368720
4400
E permite que você encontre soluções
para esses problemas com menos custo.
06:25
So I decided to build a prototype.
110
373720
2240
Então eu decidi construir um protótipo.
06:28
I went to a video terminal connected to
Harvard's time-sharing system
111
376760
4576
Fui para um terminal de vídeo conectado
ao sistema de "time-sharing" da Harvard,
06:33
and got to work.
112
381360
1496
e comecei a trabalhar.
06:34
One of the first problems
that I ran into was:
113
382880
3256
Um dos primeiros problemas
que encontrei foi:
06:38
How do you represent values in formulas?
114
386160
2680
como representar valores em fórmulas?
06:41
Let me show you what I mean.
115
389280
1360
Vou mostrar o que quero dizer.
06:44
I thought that you would point somewhere,
116
392000
2176
Pensei que você poderia
apontar para algum lugar,
06:46
type in some words,
then type in some somewhere else,
117
394200
3096
digitar algumas palavras,
depois digitar outras em outro lugar,
06:49
put in some numbers and some more numbers,
point where you want the answer.
118
397320
3524
colocar alguns números, e outros,
apontar onde quer a resposta.
Então apontar para o primeiro,
pressionar menos, apontar para o segundo,
06:53
And then point to the first, press minus,
point to the second,
119
401240
3216
06:56
and get the result.
120
404480
1200
e obter o resultado.
06:58
The problem was:
What should I put in the formula?
121
406360
3416
O problema era: o que colocar na fórmula?
07:01
It had to be something
the computer knew what to put in.
122
409800
2620
Tinha que ser algo
que o computador entendesse,
07:04
And if you looked at the formula,
123
412444
1692
e se você olhasse para a fórmula,
07:06
you needed to know
where on the screen it referred to.
124
414160
3000
precisava saber a que parte
da tela ela se referia.
07:09
The first thing I thought was
the programmer way of doing it.
125
417840
2896
A primeira coisa que pensei
foi a forma de programar isso.
A primeira vez que você
apontasse para algum lugar,
07:12
The first time you pointed to somewhere,
126
420760
1905
07:14
the computer would ask you
to type in a unique name.
127
422689
2680
o computador pediria que você
digitasse um nome único.
07:18
It became pretty clear pretty fast that
that was going to be too tedious.
128
426760
3776
Rapidamente ficou muito claro
que isso seria muito tedioso.
07:22
The computer had to automatically
make up the name and put it inside.
129
430560
3240
O computador tinha
que dar o nome automaticamente.
07:26
So I thought, why not make it be
the order in which you create them?
130
434600
4360
Então pensei: por que não usar
a ordem em que eles são criados?
07:31
I tried that. Value 1, value 2.
131
439480
2496
Tentei isso: valor 1, valor 2...
Logo vi que se houvesse mais
do que alguns poucos valores,
07:34
Pretty quickly I saw
that if you had more than a few values
132
442000
2762
você nunca se lembraria
onde as coisas estavam em sua tela.
07:36
you'd never remember
on the screen where things were.
133
444786
2510
07:39
Then I said, why not instead of
allowing you to put values anywhere,
134
447320
5296
Então pensei: por que, em vez de permitir
que se coloque valores em qualquer lugar,
07:44
I'll restrict you to a grid?
135
452640
1600
não restringi-los a uma grade?
07:46
Then when you pointed to a cell,
136
454720
2216
Então você aponta para uma célula,
07:48
the computer could put
the row and column in as a name.
137
456960
2720
e o computador pode colocar
a linha e a coluna como nome.
07:52
And, if I did it like a map and put ABC
across the top and numbers along the side,
138
460640
6176
E se eu fizesse como um mapa
e colocasse ABC em cima e números ao lado,
07:58
if you saw B7 in a formula,
139
466840
2896
se você visse B7 numa fórmula,
08:01
you'd know exactly
where it was on the screen.
140
469760
2200
saberia exatamente
onde ela estava na tela.
08:04
And if you had to type the formula
in yourself, you'd know what to do.
141
472640
4240
E se você mesmo tivesse que digitar
a fórmula, saberia o que fazer.
08:09
Restricting you to a grid
helped solve my problem.
142
477440
3080
Restringir a uma grade
me ajudou a resolver o problema.
08:13
It also opened up new capabilities,
like the ability to have ranges of cells.
143
481200
5600
E também permitiu outras possibilidades,
como a capacidade
de ter um intervalo de células.
08:19
But it wasn't too restrictive --
144
487360
1576
Mas isso não era muito restritivo.
08:20
you could still put any value,
any formula, in any cell.
145
488960
4320
Você ainda podia colocar qualquer valor,
qualquer fórmula, em qualquer célula.
08:26
And that's the way we do it to this day,
almost 40 years later.
146
494120
3840
E é dessa forma que fazemos
até hoje, quase 40 anos depois.
08:31
My friend Bob and I decided that we were
going to build this product together.
147
499109
3667
Meu amigo Bob e eu decidimos
construir esse produto juntos.
08:34
I did more work figuring out exactly
how the program was supposed to behave.
148
502800
4416
Eu trabalhei mais imaginando exatamente
como o programa deveria se comportar.
08:39
I wrote a reference card
to act as documentation.
149
507240
3256
Escrevi um cartão de referência
para servir de documentação.
08:42
It also helped me ensure
that the user interface I was defining
150
510520
4776
Ele também me ajudou a garantir
que a interface do usuário
que eu estava definindo
08:47
could be explained concisely
and clearly to regular people.
151
515320
3479
poderia ser explicada de forma clara
e concisa para pessoas comuns.
08:51
Bob worked in the attic of the apartment
he rented in Arlington, Massachusetts.
152
519520
5416
Bob trabalhou no sótão do apartamento
que ele alugou
em Arlington, Massachusetts.
08:56
This is the inside of the attic.
153
524960
1720
Este é o interior do sótão.
09:00
Bob bought time on the MIT Multics System
154
528240
2776
Bob comprou tempo
no sistema Multics da MIT
09:03
to write computer code
on a terminal like this.
155
531040
2720
para escrever código de computador
em um terminal como este.
09:06
And then he would download test versions
to a borrowed Apple II
156
534400
3496
Depois ele baixava versões de teste
em um Apple II emprestado
09:09
over a phone line
using an acoustic coupler,
157
537920
3256
através de uma linha telefônica
usando um acoplador acústico,
09:13
and then we would test.
158
541200
1160
e então ele testava.
09:14
For one of these tests I prepared
for this case about the Pepsi Challenge.
159
542920
4720
Para um desses testes preparei
este caso, sobre o Desafio da Pepsi.
09:20
Print wasn't working yet,
so I had to copy everything down.
160
548720
2920
A impressão ainda não estava funcionando,
então tive que copiar tudo.
09:24
Save wasn't working,
so every time it crashed,
161
552480
2416
Não estava salvando,
então sempre que o sistema caía,
09:26
I had to type in all of the formulas
again, over and over again.
162
554920
3000
eu tinha que digitar
todas as fórmulas novamente.
09:30
The next day in class, I raised my hand;
I got called on, and I presented the case.
163
558240
3976
No dia seguinte na aula, levantei a mão;
fui chamado e apresentei o caso.
Fiz projeções de cinco anos.
Fiz todo tipo de cenários diferentes.
09:34
I did five-year projections.
I did all sorts of different scenarios.
164
562240
3576
09:37
I aced the case.
VisiCalc was already useful.
165
565840
3680
Gabaritei o caso.
O VisiCalc já podia ser usado.
09:42
The professor said, "How did you do it?"
166
570160
2600
O professor disse: "Como você fez isso?"
09:45
Well, I didn't want to tell him
about our secret program.
167
573469
2667
Bem, eu não queria contar a ele
sobre nosso programa secreto.
09:48
(Laughter)
168
576160
1520
(Risos)
09:50
So I said, "I took this and added this
169
578200
1856
Eu disse: "Peguei isso, somei aquilo,
multipliquei por este, subtraí aquele".
09:52
and multiplied by this
and subtracted that."
170
580080
2096
Ele disse: "Bem, por que você
não fez uma proporção?"
09:54
He said, "Well,
why didn't you use a ratio?"
171
582200
2096
09:56
I said, "Hah! A ratio --
that wouldn't have been as exact!"
172
584320
3016
Eu disse: "Ah! Uma proporção...
isso não teria dado tão exato!"
O que eu não disse foi: "A divisão
ainda não está funcionando".
09:59
What I didn't say was,
"Divide isn't working yet."
173
587360
2576
10:01
(Laughter)
174
589960
3096
(Risos)
10:05
Eventually, though,
we did finish enough of VisiCalc
175
593080
3856
Mas, finalmente, o VisiCalc
ficou pronto o suficiente
10:08
to be able to show it to the public.
176
596960
1840
para poder ser mostrado ao público.
10:11
My dad printed up a sample reference card
177
599440
1976
Meu pai imprimiu uma amostra
do cartão de referência
10:13
that we could use as marketing material.
178

que poderia ser usado
como material promocional.

10:47
(Laughter)
188
635120
1496
(Risos)
10:48
That was the last mention
of the electronic spreadsheet
189
636640
4256
Essa foi a última menção

10:52
in the popular business press
for about two years.

na imprensa popular de negócios

10:56
Most people didn't get it yet.
191
644840

A maior parte das pessoas ainda
não o tinha adquirido, mas algumas sim.
10:59
But some did.
192
647000
1200
11:00
In October of 1979, we shipped VisiCalc.
193
648920
4200
Em outubro de 1979, lançamos o VisiCalc.
11:05
It came in packaging
that looked like this.
194
653880
2816
Ele vinha em embalagens como esta.
11:08
And it looked like this
running on the Apple II.
195
656720
2480
E se parecia com isso,
executando no Apple II.
11:12
And the rest, as they say, is history.
196
660000
1960
E o resto, como dizem, é história.
11:14
Now, there's an awful lot
more to this story,
197
662360
2096
Bem, tem muito mais nessa história,
11:16
but that'll have to wait for another day.
198
664480
2056
mas vamos deixar para outro dia.

One thing, though, Harvard remembers.

But it also serves as a reminder

Mas isso também serve como um lembrete

that you, too, should take
