ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Shereen El Feki - Arab sexuality expert
Shereen El Feki works and writes on sexuality and social change in the Arab world.

Why you should listen

Dividing her time between London and Cairo, TED Fellow Shereen El Feki works on issues related to health and social welfare in the Arab region -- including intimate attitudes toward sexual (and political) freedoms, as explored in her new book, Sex and the Citadel.

Half-Egyptian and half-Welsh, El Feki was brought up in Canada. She started her professional life in medical science, with a PhD in molecular immunology from the University of Cambridge, and later worked as healthcare correspondent at The Economist. She also is a former vice chair of the United Nations' Global Commission on HIV and Law. While she has worked in regional media as a presenter with the Al Jazeera Network, and continues to write on social issues in the Arab world, her passion lies in projects that aim to better understand, and surmount, the social challenges facing Arabs, particularly young people.

Shereen El Feki: Cultura pop no mundo árabe

Filmed:

In the world of 4Shbab, it's not about bump and grind.
47

No mundo do 4Shbab, não há danças erotizadas.

But it's not about fire and brimstone either.

Nem tampouco trata-se de fundamentalismo religioso.
02:59
Its videos are intended to show
49
164000
2000
Os vídeos têm a intenção de mostrar
03:01
a kinder, gentler face of Islam,
50
166000
3000
um lado melhor, mais gentil do Islã,
03:04
for young people to deal with life's challenges.
51
169000
3000
03:07
Now, my second example is for a slightly younger crowd.
52
172000
3000
03:10
And it's called "The 99."
53
175000
3000
É chamado "Os 99" (os noventa e nove).
03:13
Now, these are the world's first Islamic superheroes.
54
178000
3000
Eles são os primeiros super-heróis islâmicos.
03:16
They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist
55

Eles foram criados por um psicólogo kuwaitiano
03:18
called Naif Al Mutawa.
56
183000
2000
chamado Nayef Al Mutawa.
03:20
And his desire is to rescue Islam
57
185000
2000
E o que ele deseja é desassociar o Islã
03:22
from images of intolerance,
58
187000
2000
de imagens de intolerância,
03:24
all in a child-friendly format.
59
189000
4000
tudo num formato acessível às crianças.
03:28
"The 99." The characters are meant to embody
60
193000
2000
"Os 99", os personagens destinam-se a incorporar
03:30
the 99 attributes of Allah:
61
195000
3000
os 99 atributos de Alá,
03:33
justice, wisdom, mercy, among others.
62
198000
3000
justiça, sabedoria, compaixão, entre outros.
03:36
So, for example, there is the character of Noora.
63
201000
4000
Então, por exemplo, há a personagem Noora.
03:40
She is meant to have the power
64
205000
2000
Ela é destinada a ter o poder
03:42
to look inside people
65
207000
2000
de olhar para o interior das pessoas
03:44
and see the good and bad in everyone.
66
209000
3000
03:47
Another character called Jami
67
212000
2000
Outro personagem chamado Jami
03:49
has the ability to create fantastic inventions.
68
214000
4000
tem a habilidade de criar invenções fantásticas.
03:53
Now, "The 99" is not just a comic book.
69
218000
2000
03:55
It's now a theme park.
70
220000
2000
Agora é também um parque temático.
03:57
There is an animated series in the works.
71
222000
2000
03:59
And by this time next year,
72
224000
2000
E ano que vem
04:01
the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman
73
226000
2000
04:03
will have joined forces with "The 99"
74
228000
2000
unirão suas forças a "Os 99"
04:05
to beat injustice wherever they find it.
75
230000
6000
04:11
"The 99" and 4Shbab are just two of many examples
76
236000
3000
"Os 99" e o 4Shbab são somente dois de muitos exemplos
04:14
of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization.
77
239000
4000
desse tipo de hibridização cultural islâmica.
04:18
We're not talking here about a clash of civilizations.
78
243000
3000
04:21
Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash.
79
246000
3000
04:24
I like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations,
80
249000
3000
04:27
in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.
81
252000
4000
04:31
Now, while 4Shbab and "The 99" may look new and shiny,
82
256000
3000
Embora o 4Shbab e "Os 99" pareçam ser novos e reluzentes,
04:34
there is actually a very long tradition of this.
83
259000
3000
há neles, na verdade, uma longa tradição.
04:37
Throughout its history, Islam has borrowed and adapted from other civilizations
84
262000
5000
04:42
both ancient and modern.
85
267000
2000
tanto antigas quanto modernas.
04:44
After all, it's the Quran which encourages us to do this:
86
269000
3000
04:49
"We made you into nations and tribes
87
274000
2000
"Nós os fizemos em nações e tribos
04:51
so that you could learn from one another."
88
276000
2000
04:53
And to my mind, those are pretty wise words,
89
278000
3000
04:56
no matter what your creed. Thank you.
90
281000
3000
Obrigada.
04:59
