ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sheena Iyengar - Psycho-economist
Sheena Iyengar studies how people choose (and what makes us think we're good at it).

Why you should listen

We all think we're good at making choices; many of us even enjoy making them. Sheena Iyengar looks deeply at choosing and has discovered many surprising things about it. For instance, her famous "jam study," done while she was a grad student, quantified a counterintuitive truth about decisionmaking -- that when we're presented with too many choices, like 24 varieties of jam, we tend not to choose anything at all. (This and subsequent, equally ingenious experiments have provided rich material for Malcolm Gladwell and other pop chroniclers of business and the human psyche.)

Iyengar's research has been informing business and consumer-goods marketing since the 1990s. But she and her team at the Columbia Business School throw a much broader net. Her analysis touches, for example, on the medical decisionmaking that might lead up to choosing physician-assisted suicide, on the drawbacks of providing too many choices and options in social-welfare programs, and on the cultural and geographical underpinning of choice. Her book The Art of Choosing shares her research in an accessible and charming story that draws examples from her own life.

Minha base de operação é nos E.U.A.

Mas vamos começar na outra ponta do mapa
00:31
in Kyoto, Japan,

em Kyoto, Japão,
00:33
where I was living with a Japanese family

00:41
I knew even then that I would encounter
8
26000
2000
Eu sabia mesmo antes que iria encontrar
00:43
cultural differences and misunderstandings,
9
28000
2000
diferenças culturais e mal-entendidos,
00:45
but they popped up when I least expected it.
10
30000
3000
mas eles surgiam quando eu menos esperava.
00:48
On my first day,
11
33000
2000
No meu primeiro dia,
00:50
I went to a restaurant,
12
35000
2000
eu fui a um restaurante,
00:52
and I ordered a cup of green tea with sugar.
13
37000
2000
e pedi uma xícara de chá verde com açúcar.
00:54
After a pause, the waiter said,
14
39000
2000
Depois de uma pausa, o garçom disse,
00:56
"One does not put sugar in green tea."
15
41000
3000
"Não se coloca açúcar no chá verde."
01:00
"I know," I said. "I'm aware of this custom.
16
45000
2000
"Eu sei". Respondi. "Estou ciente deste costume.
01:02
But I really like my tea sweet."
17
47000
3000
Mas eu realmente gosto do meu chá doce."
01:05
In response, he gave me an even more courteous version
18
50000
3000
Em resposta, ele me deu uma versão ainda mais cortês
01:08
of the same explanation.
19
53000
2000
da mesma explicação.
01:10
"One does not put sugar
20
55000
2000
"Não se coloca açúcar
01:12
in green tea."
21
57000
3000
no chá verde."
01:15
"I understand," I said,
22
60000
2000
"Eu entendo," eu disse,
01:17
"that the Japanese do not put sugar in their green tea,
23
62000
2000
"que os japoneses não colocam açúcar em seu chá verde.
01:19
but I'd like to put some sugar
24
64000
2000
Mas eu gostaria de colocar açúcar
01:21
in my green tea."
25
66000
2000
no meu chá verde."
01:23
(Laughter)
26
68000
2000
(Risadas)
01:25
Surprised by my insistence,
27
70000
2000
Surpreso pela minha insistência,
01:27
the waiter took up the issue with the manager.
28
72000
2000
o garçom levou o problema ao gerente.
01:29
Pretty soon,
29
74000
2000
Logo,
01:31
a lengthy discussion ensued,
30
76000
2000
uma longa discussão se seguiu,
01:33
and finally the manager came over to me and said,
31
78000
3000
e finalmente o gerente veio até mim e disse,
01:36
"I am very sorry. We do not have sugar."
32
81000
3000
"Eu sinto muito. Nós não temos açúcar."
01:39
(Laughter)
33
84000
2000
(Risadas)
01:41
Well, since I couldn't have my tea the way I wanted it,
34
86000
3000
Bem, como não podia tomar meu chá da forma que queria,
01:44
I ordered a cup of coffee,
35
89000
2000
Eu pedi uma xícara de café,
01:46
which the waiter brought over promptly.
36
91000
2000
que o garçom trouxe prontamente.
01:48
Resting on the saucer
37
93000
2000
E no pires
01:50
were two packets of sugar.
38
95000
3000
estavam 2 pacotinhos de açúcar.
01:53
My failure to procure myself
39
98000
3000
Minha falha em obter
01:56
a cup of sweet, green tea
40
101000
2000
uma xícara de chá verde doce
01:58
was not due to a simple misunderstanding.
41
103000
3000
não é devida a um simples mal-entendido.
02:01
This was due to a fundamental difference
42
106000
2000
Foi devido a uma diferença fundamental
02:03
in our ideas about choice.
43
108000
3000
em nossas ideias sobre escolha.
02:06
From my American perspective,
44
111000
2000
Da minha perspectiva americana,
02:08
when a paying customer makes a reasonable request
45
113000
2000
quando uma cliente pagante faz um pedido razoável
02:10
based on her preferences,
46
115000
2000
baseado em suas preferências,
02:12
she has every right to have that request met.
47
117000
3000
ela tem todo direito de ter seu pedido atendido.
02:15
The American way, to quote Burger King,
48
120000
2000
O jeito americano, para citar Burger King,
02:17
is to "have it your way,"
49
122000
2000
é "ter do seu jeito",
02:19
because, as Starbucks says,
50
124000
2000
porque, como Starbucks diz,
02:21
"happiness is in your choices."
51
126000
2000
"a felicidade está nas suas escolhas".
02:23
(Laughter)
52
128000
2000
(Risadas)
02:25
But from the Japanese perspective,
53
130000
3000
Mas pela perspectiva japonesa,
02:28
it's their duty to protect those who don't know any better --
54
133000
3000
é dever deles proteger aqueles que não sabem --
02:31
(Laughter)
55
136000
2000
(Risadas)
02:33
in this case, the ignorant gaijin --
56
138000
2000
neste caso, a gaijin ignorante --
02:35
from making the wrong choice.
57
140000
3000
de fazer a escolha errada.
02:38
Let's face it: the way I wanted my tea
58
143000
2000
Vamos encarar: a forma como eu queria meu chá
02:40
was inappropriate according to cultural standards,
59
145000
3000
era inapropriada de acordo com os padrões culturais,
02:43
and they were doing their best to help me save face.
60
148000
3000
e eles estavam fazendo o melhor para me ajudar a não quebrar a cara.
02:46
Americans tend to believe
61
151000
2000
Americanos tendem a acreditar
02:48
that they've reached some sort of pinnacle
62
153000
2000
que eles atingiram algum tipo de pico
02:50
in the way they practice choice.
63
155000
2000
na forma como praticam a escolha.
02:52
They think that choice, as seen through the American lens
64
157000
3000
Eles acham que a escolha vista através das lentes americanas
02:55
best fulfills an innate and universal
65
160000
2000
melhor preenche um inato e universal
02:57
desire for choice in all humans.
66
162000
3000
desejo de escolha em todos os seres humanos.
03:00
Unfortunately,
67
165000
2000
Infelizmente,
03:02
these beliefs are based on assumptions
68
167000
2000
essas crenças são baseadas em suposições
03:04
that don't always hold true
69
169000
2000
que nem sempre são verdadeiras
03:06
in many countries, in many cultures.
70
171000
3000
em muitos países, em muitas culturas.
03:09
At times they don't even hold true
71
174000
2000
Às vezes elas não são verdadeiras
03:11
at America's own borders.
72
176000
2000
nem dentro das próprias fronteiras da América.
03:13
I'd like to discuss some of these assumptions
73
178000
2000
Eu gostaria de discutir algumas dessas suposições
03:15
and the problems associated with them.
74
180000
3000
e os problemas associados a elas.
03:18
As I do so, I hope you'll start thinking
75
183000
2000
E enquanto faço isso, espero que vocês comecem a pensar
03:20
about some of your own assumptions
76
185000
2000
sobre algumas de suas próprias suposições
03:22
and how they were shaped by your backgrounds.
77
187000
3000
e em como elas são moldadas pela sua própria experiência.
03:25
First assumption:
78
190000
2000
Primeira suposição:
03:27
if a choice affects you,
79
192000
2000
se uma escolha te afeta,
03:29
then you should be the one to make it.
80
194000
2000
então é você que deve tomá-la.
03:31
This is the only way to ensure
81
196000
2000
Esta é a única forma de garantir
03:33
that your preferences and interests
82
198000
2000
que suas preferências e interesses
03:35
will be most fully accounted for.
83
200000
3000
serão atingidos.
03:38
It is essential for success.
84
203000
3000
Isto é essencial para o sucesso.
03:41
In America, the primary locus of choice
85
206000
3000
Na América, o primeiro local da escolha
03:44
is the individual.
86
209000
2000
é o indivíduo.
03:46
People must choose for themselves, sometimes sticking to their guns,
87
211000
3000
As pessoas devem escolher por si mesmas, algumas vezes mantendo sua posição,
03:49
regardless of what other people want or recommend.
88
214000
3000
independente do que outras pessoas querem ou recomendam.
03:52
It's called "being true to yourself."
89
217000
3000
Chama-se "ser verdadeiro consigo mesmo".
03:55
But do all individuals benefit
90
220000
2000
Mas todos indivíduos se beneficiarão
03:57
from taking such an approach to choice?
91
222000
3000
ao acatar esta abordagem da escolha?
04:00
Mark Lepper and I did a series of studies
92
225000
2000
Mark Lipper e eu fizemos uma série de estudos
04:02
in which we sought the answer to this very question.
93
227000
3000
em que nós procuramos a resposta para esta mesma questão.
04:05
In one study,
94
230000
2000
Em um estudo,
04:07
which we ran in Japantown, San Francisco,
95
232000
3000
que fizemos em Japantown, São Francisco,
04:10
we brought seven- to nine-year-old Anglo- and Asian-American children
96
235000
3000
trouxemos crianças anglo- e asiático-americanas de 7 a 9 anos
04:13
into the laboratory,
97
238000
2000
para o laboratório,
04:15
and we divided them up into three groups.
98
240000
2000
e nós as dividimos em três grupos.
04:17
The first group came in,
99
242000
2000
O primeiro grupo entrou,
04:19
and they were greeted by Miss Smith,
100
244000
2000
e foram saudados pela Srta. Smith,
04:21
who showed them six big piles of anagram puzzles.
101
246000
3000
que lhes mostrou seis grandes pilhas de jogos de anagramas.
04:24
The kids got to choose which pile of anagrams they would like to do,
102
249000
3000
As crianças podiam escolher qual pilha de anagramas gostariam de fazer.
04:27
and they even got to choose which marker
103
252000
2000
E eles podiam até escolher com qual caneta
04:29
they would write their answers with.
104
254000
2000
gostariam de escrever suas respostas.
04:31
When the second group of children came in,
105
256000
2000
Quando o segundo grupo de crianças entrou,
04:33
they were brought to the same room, shown the same anagrams,
106
258000
3000
foram levadas para a mesma sala, mostrados os mesmos anagramas,
04:36
but this time Miss Smith told them
107
261000
2000
mas desta vez a Srta. Smith disse a eles
04:38
which anagrams to do
108
263000
2000
quais anagramas fazer
04:40
and which markers to write their answers with.
109
265000
3000
e quais canetas deveriam usar para escrever suas respostas.
04:43
Now when the third group came in,
110
268000
3000
Agora quando o terceiro grupo entrou,
04:46
they were told that their anagrams and their markers
111
271000
3000
foi-lhes dito que seus anagramas e canetas
04:49
had been chosen by their mothers.
112
274000
2000
foram escolhidos pelas suas mães.
04:51
(Laughter)
113
276000
2000
(Risadas)
04:53
In reality,
114
278000
2000
Na realidade,
04:55
the kids who were told what to do,
115
280000
2000
às crianças às quais foi dito o que fazer,
04:57
whether by Miss Smith or their mothers,
116
282000
2000
seja pela Srta. Smith ou pelas suas mães,
04:59
were actually given the very same activity,
117
284000
2000
foi-lhes dada a mesma atividade,
05:01
which their counterparts in the first group
118
286000
2000
que as crianças do primeiro grupo
05:03
had freely chosen.
119
288000
2000
escolheram livremente.
05:05
With this procedure, we were able to ensure
120
290000
2000
Com este procedimento, fomos capazes de garantir
05:07
that the kids across the three groups
121
292000
2000
que as crianças nos três grupos
05:09
all did the same activity,
122
294000
2000
todas fizeram a mesma atividade,
05:11
making it easier for us to compare performance.
123
296000
3000
tornando mais fácil para nós comparar as performances.
05:14
Such small differences in the way we administered the activity
124
299000
3000
Estas pequenas diferenças na forma como conduzimos a atividade
05:17
yielded striking differences
125
302000
2000
resultaram em enormes diferenças
05:19
in how well they performed.
126
304000
2000
em quão bem elas atuaram.
05:21
Anglo-Americans,
127
306000
2000
Anglo-americanos,
05:23
they did two and a half times more anagrams
128
308000
3000
fizeram duas vezes e meia mais anagramas
05:26
when they got to choose them,
129
311000
2000
quando foram eles que os escolheram,
05:28
as compared to when it was
130
313000
2000
comparado a quando os mesmos foram
05:30
chosen for them by Miss Smith or their mothers.
131
315000
3000
escolhidos para eles pela Srta. Smith ou suas mães.
05:33
It didn't matter who did the choosing,
132
318000
3000
Não importa quem fez a escolha,
05:36
if the task was dictated by another,
133
321000
2000
se a tarefa era ditada por outra pessoa,
05:38
their performance suffered.
134
323000
2000
a performance deles sofria.
05:40
In fact, some of the kids were visibly embarrassed
135
325000
3000
Na verdade, algumas das crianças estavam visivelmente envergonhadas
05:43
when they were told that their mothers had been consulted.
136
328000
3000
quando foram informadas que sua mãe foi consultada.
05:46
(Laughter)
137
331000
2000
(Risadas)
05:48
One girl named Mary said,
138
333000
2000
Uma garota chamada Mary disse,
05:50
"You asked my mother?"
139
335000
3000
"Você perguntou para minha mãe?"
05:53
(Laughter)
140
338000
2000
(Risadas)
05:55
In contrast,
141
340000
2000
Em contraste,
05:57
Asian-American children
142
342000
2000
Crianças Asiático-americanas
05:59
performed best when they believed
143
344000
2000
tiveram uma melhor performance quando acreditavam
06:01
their mothers had made the choice,
144
346000
3000
que suas mães haviam feito a escolha,
06:04
second best when they chose for themselves,
145
349000
3000
a segunda melhor performance foi quando escolheram por si mesmos,
06:07
and least well when it had been chosen by Miss Smith.
146
352000
3000
e a menos boa quando havia sido escolhido pela Srta. Smith.
06:10
A girl named Natsumi
147
355000
2000
Uma garota chamada Natsumi
06:12
even approached Miss Smith as she was leaving the room
148
357000
2000
aproximou-se da Srta. Smith enquanto ela saía da sala
06:14
and tugged on her skirt and asked,
149
359000
2000
e puxando sua saia perguntou,
06:16
"Could you please tell my mommy
150
361000
2000
"Por favor você poderia dizer à minha mãe
06:18
I did it just like she said?"
151
363000
3000
que eu fiz exatamente como ela disse?"
06:22
The first-generation children were strongly influenced

e pela abordagem que fazem da escolha.
06:29
For them, choice was not just a way
155

of defining and asserting

de definir e afirmar

378000
2000
sua individualidade,
06:35
but a way to create community and harmony
158
380000
2000
mas uma forma de criar comunhão e harmonia
06:37
by deferring to the choices
159
382000
2000
por diferenciar as escolhas
06:39
of people whom they trusted and respected.
160
384000
3000
das pessoas as quais eles confiam e respeitam.
06:42
If they had a concept of being true to one's self,
161
387000
3000
Se eles têm um conceito de ser verdadeiro a um princípio,
06:45
then that self, most likely,
162
390000
2000
então esse princípio, muito provavelmente,
06:47
[was] composed, not of an individual,
163
392000
2000
foi composto, não por um indivíduo,
06:49
but of a collective.
164
394000
2000
mas por um coletivo.
06:51
Success was just as much about pleasing key figures
165
396000
3000
Sucesso era tanto sobre agradar figuras chave
06:54
as it was about satisfying
166
399000
2000
quanto era sobre satisfazer
06:56
one's own preferences.
167
401000
2000
as preferências de alguém.
06:58
Or, you could say that
168
403000
2000
Ou, você poderia dizer que
07:00
the individual's preferences were shaped
169
405000
2000
as preferências individuais foram formadas
07:02
by the preferences of specific others.
170
407000
3000
pelas preferências específicas de outros.
07:06
The assumption then that we do best
171
411000
2000
Então, a suposição de que fazemos melhor
07:08
when the individual self chooses
172
413000
2000
quando escolhemos individualmente
07:10
only holds
173
415000
2000
apenas se mantém
07:12
when that self
174
417000
2000
quando este princípio
07:14
is clearly divided from others.
175
419000
3000
é claramente dividido por outros.
07:17
When, in contrast,
176
422000
2000
Quando, em contraste,
07:19
two or more individuals
177
424000
2000
dois ou mais indivíduos
07:21
see their choices and their outcomes
178
426000
2000
vêem suas escolhas e suas conclusões
07:23
as intimately connected,
179
428000
2000
como intimamente conectadas,
07:25
then they may amplify one another's success
180
430000
3000
então eles podem ampliar o sucesso de uns
07:28
by turning choosing
181
433000
2000
tornando a escolha
07:30
into a collective act.
182
435000
2000
em um ato coletivo.
07:32
To insist that they choose independently
183
437000
3000
Insistir que eles escolham independentemente,
07:35
might actually compromise
184
440000
2000
pode de fato comprometer
07:37
both their performance
185
442000
2000
ambos, sua performance
07:39
and their relationships.
186
444000
2000
e suas relações.
07:41
Yet that is exactly what
187
446000
2000
Ainda assim isto é exatamente o que
07:43
the American paradigm demands.
188
448000
2000
pede o paradigma americano.
07:45
It leaves little room for interdependence
189
450000
3000
Ele deixa pouco espaço para a interdependência
07:48
or an acknowledgment of individual fallibility.
190
453000
3000
ou um reconhecimento da falibilidade do indíviduo.
07:51
It requires that everyone treat choice
191
456000
3000
Isto requer que todos tratem a escolha
07:54
as a private and self-defining act.
192
459000
3000
como um ato privado e auto-definidor.
07:58
People that have grown up in such a paradigm
193
463000
2000
Pessoas que cresceram neste paradigma
08:00
might find it motivating,
194
465000
2000
podem achá-lo motivador.
08:02
but it is a mistake to assume
195
467000
2000
Mas é um erro assumir
08:04
that everyone thrives under the pressure
196
469000
2000
que todos se desenvolvem sob a pressão
08:06
of choosing alone.
197
471000
3000
de escolher sozinho.
08:09
The second assumption which informs the American view of choice
198
474000
3000
A segunda suposição que informa que a visão americana de escolha
08:12
goes something like this.
199
477000
2000
é algo mais ou menos assim.
08:14
The more choices you have,
200
479000
2000
Quanto mais escolhas você tem,
08:16
the more likely you are
201
481000
2000
mais propenso você está
08:18
to make the best choice.
202
483000
2000
de fazer a melhor escolha.
08:20
So bring it on, Walmart, with 100,000 different products,
203
485000
3000
Então que venha o Walmart com 100.000 produtos diferentes,
08:23
and Amazon, with 27 million books
204
488000
3000
a Amazon com 27 milhões de livros
08:26
and Match.com with -- what is it? --
205
491000
2000
e Match.com com -- o que é isto? --
08:28
15 million date possibilities now.
206
493000
3000
15 milhões de possibilidades de encontros agora.
08:32
You will surely find the perfect match.
207
497000
3000
Com certeza você encontrará o par perfeito.
08:35
Let's test this assumption
208
500000
2000
Vamos testar essa suposição
08:37
by heading over to Eastern Europe.
209
502000
2000
nos direcionando para a Europa Oriental.
08:39
Here, I interviewed people
210
504000
2000
Aqui, eu entrevistei pessoas
08:41
who were residents of formerly communist countries,
211
506000
3000
que eram residentes de antigos países comunistas,
08:44
who had all faced the challenge
212
509000
2000
e todas enfrentaram o desafio
08:46
of transitioning to a more
213
511000
2000
da transição para uma mais
08:48
democratic and capitalistic society.
214
513000
3000
sociedade mais democrática e capitalista.
08:51
One of the most interesting revelations
215
516000
2000
Uma das mais interessantes revelações
08:53
came not from an answer to a question,
216
518000
2000
veio não da resposta a uma questão,
08:55
but from a simple gesture of hospitality.
217
520000
3000
mas de um simples gesto de hospitalidade.
08:58
When the participants arrived for their interview,
218
523000
3000
Quando os participantes chegaram para suas entrevistas
09:01
I offered them a set of drinks:
219
526000
2000
eu lhes ofereci um conjunto de bebidas,
09:03
Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite --
220
528000
2000
Coca, Coca Diet, Sprite --
09:05
seven, to be exact.
221
530000
2000
sete, para ser exata.
09:07
During the very first session,
222
532000
2000
Durante a primeira sessão,
09:09
which was run in Russia,
223
534000
2000
que aconteceu na Rússia,
09:11
one of the participants made a comment
224
536000
2000
um dos participantes fez um comentário
09:13
that really caught me off guard.
225
538000
3000
que realmente me pegou desprevenida.
09:16
"Oh, but it doesn't matter.
226
541000
2000
"Oh, não importa.
09:18
It's all just soda. That's just one choice."
227
543000
3000
São todos refrigerantes. Sendo apenas uma escolha."
09:21
(Murmuring)
228
546000
2000
(Murmúrios)
09:23
I was so struck by this comment that from then on,
229
548000
2000
Eu fiquei tão arrasada por este comentário que a partir de então
09:25
I started to offer all the participants
230
550000
2000
eu comecei a oferecer a todos os participantes
09:27
those seven sodas,
231
552000
2000
aqueles sete refrigerantes.
09:29
and I asked them, "How many choices are these?"
232
554000
3000
E eu perguntava a eles, "Quantas escolhas são essas?"
09:32
Again and again,
233
557000
2000
De novo e de novo,
09:34
they perceived these seven different sodas,
234
559000
3000
eles percebiam estes sete diferentes refrigerantes,
09:37
not as seven choices, but as one choice:
235
562000
3000
não como sete escolhas, mas apenas uma:
09:40
soda or no soda.
236
565000
2000
refrigerante ou não refrigerante.
09:42
When I put out juice and water
237
567000
2000
Quando adicionei suco e água
09:44
in addition to these seven sodas,
238
569000
2000
a estes sete refrigerantes,
09:46
now they perceived it as only three choices --
239
571000
2000
agora eles percebiam como apenas três escolhas --
09:48
juice, water and soda.
240
573000
3000
suco, água e refrigerante.
09:51
Compare this to the die-hard devotion of many Americans,
241
576000
3000
Compare isto com a devoção obsessiva de muito americanos,
09:54
not just to a particular flavor of soda,
242
579000
3000
não apenas a um sabor específico de refrigerante,
09:57
but to a particular brand.
243
582000
2000
mas a uma marca em particular.
09:59
You know, research shows repeatedly
244
584000
3000
Vocês sabem, pesquisas mostram repetidamente
10:02
that we can't actually tell the difference
245
587000
2000
que nós não podemos realmente dizer a diferença
10:04
between Coke and Pepsi.
246
589000
2000
entre Coca e Pepsi.
10:06
Of course, you and I know
247
591000
2000
É claro, você e eu sabemos
10:08
that Coke is the better choice.
248
593000
2000
que Coca é a melhor opção.
10:10
(Laughter)
249
595000
6000
(Risadas)
10:16
For modern Americans who are exposed
250
601000
2000
Para americanos modernos que são expostos
10:18
to more options and more ads associated with options
251
603000
3000
a mais opções e mais anúncios associados com opções
10:21
than anyone else in the world,
252
606000
2000
que qualquer um no mundo,
10:23
choice is just as much about who they are
253
608000
2000
escolha é sobre praticamente sobre quem eles são
10:25
as it is about what the product is.
254
610000
3000
tanto quanto é sobre qual produto.
10:28
Combine this with the assumption that more choices are always better,
255
613000
3000
Combine isso com a suposição de que mais opções é sempre melhor,
10:31
and you have a group of people for whom every little difference matters
256
616000
3000
e você tem um grupo de pessoas para quem cada pequena diferença importa
10:34
and so every choice matters.
257
619000
2000
e portanto cada escolha importa.
10:36
But for Eastern Europeans,
258
621000
3000
Mas para os europeus orientais,
10:39
the sudden availability of all these
259
624000
2000
a súbita disponibilidade de todos esses
10:41
consumer products on the marketplace was a deluge.
260
626000
3000
produtos de consumo do mercado foi um dilúvio.
10:44
They were flooded with choice
261
629000
2000
Eles foram inundados com escolhas
10:46
before they could protest that they didn't know how to swim.
262
631000
3000
antes que pudessem protestar dizendo que não sabia como nadar.
10:50
When asked, "What words and images
263
635000
2000
Quando perguntados, "Que palavras e imagens
10:52
do you associate with choice?"
264
637000
2000
você associa com escolha?"
10:54
Grzegorz from Warsaw said,
265
639000
3000
Gregors de Varsóvia disse,
10:57
"Ah, for me it is fear.
266
642000
2000
"Ah, para mim é medo.
10:59
There are some dilemmas you see.
267
644000
2000
Existem alguns dilemas como você pode ver.
11:01
I am used to no choice."
268
646000
2000
Estou acostumado a não fazer escolhas."
11:03
Bohdan from Kiev said,
269
648000
2000
Boudin de Kiev disse,
11:05
in response to how he felt about
270
650000
2000
em resposta sobre como se sentiu sobre
11:07
the new consumer marketplace,
271
652000
2000
o novo mercado consumidor,
11:09
"It is too much.
272
654000
2000
"É muito.
11:11
We do not need everything that is there."
273
656000
2000
Nós não precisamos de tudo que está lá.
11:13
A sociologist from
274
658000
2000
Um sociologista da
11:15
the Warsaw Survey Agency explained,
275
660000
3000
Agência de Pesquisa de Varsóvia explicou,
11:18
"The older generation jumped from nothing
276
663000
3000
"A geração mais velha pulou de nada
11:21
to choice all around them.
277
666000
2000
para ter escolhas em toda parte.
11:23
They were never given a chance to learn
278
668000
2000
Nunca lhes foi dado uma chance para aprender
11:25
how to react."
279
670000
2000
como reagir."
11:27
And Tomasz, a young Polish man said,
280
672000
3000
E Thomas, um jovem polonês disse,
11:30
"I don't need twenty kinds of chewing gum.
281
675000
3000
"Eu não preciso de vinte tipos de goma de mascar.
11:33
I don't mean to say that I want no choice,
282
678000
3000
Eu não quero dizer que não quero escolha alguma,
11:36
but many of these choices are quite artificial."
283
681000
3000
mas muitas dessas escolhas são bem artificiais."
11:40
In reality, many choices are between things
284
685000
3000
Na realidade, muitas das escolhas são entre coisas
11:43
that are not that much different.
285
688000
3000
que não são assim tão diferentes.
11:47
The value of choice
286
692000
2000
O valor da escolha
11:49
depends on our ability
287
694000
2000
depende de nossa habilidade
11:51
to perceive differences
288
696000
2000
em perceber as diferenças
11:53
between the options.
289
698000
2000
entre as opções.
11:55
Americans train their whole lives
290
700000
2000
Americanos treinam suas vidas inteiras
11:57
to play "spot the difference."
291
702000
3000
brincar "aponte a diferença".
12:00
They practice this from such an early age
292
705000
2000
A prática disto desde tenra idade
12:02
that they've come to believe that everyone
293
707000
2000
os leva a acreditar que todo mundo
12:04
must be born with this ability.
294
709000
2000
deve ter nascido com esta habilidade.
12:06
In fact, though all humans share
295
711000
2000
Na verdade, ainda que todos os humanos partilhem
12:08
a basic need and desire for choice,
296
713000
3000
de uma necessidade básica e desejo pela escolha,
12:11
we don't all see choice in the same places
297
716000
3000
nós todos não vemos a escolha nos mesmos lugares
12:14
or to the same extent.
298
719000
2000
ou com a mesma extensão.
12:16
When someone can't see how one choice
299
721000
2000
Quando alguém não consegue ver como uma escolha
12:18
is unlike another,
300
723000
2000
é diferente de outra,
12:20
or when there are too many choices to compare and contrast,
301
725000
3000
ou quando existem muitas escolhas para comparar e contrastar,
12:23
the process of choosing can be
302
728000
2000
o processo de escolher pode ser
12:25
confusing and frustrating.
303
730000
3000
confuso e frustrante.
12:28
Instead of making better choices,
304
733000
2000
Ao invés de se fazer melhores escolhas,
12:30
we become overwhelmed by choice,
305
735000
2000
nos somos abalados pela escolha,
12:32
sometimes even afraid of it.
306
737000
3000
algumas vezes até com medo dela.
12:35
Choice no longer offers opportunities,
307
740000
2000
Escolha não mais oferece oportunidades,
12:37
but imposes constraints.
308
742000
2000
mas impõe restrições.
12:39
It's not a marker of liberation,
309
744000
2000
Não é uma marca de liberação,
12:41
but of suffocation
310
746000
2000
mas de sufocação
12:43
by meaningless minutiae.
311
748000
2000
por detalhes sem sentido.
12:45
In other words,
312
750000
2000
Em outras palavras,
12:47
choice can develop into the very opposite
313
752000
2000
escolha pode desenvolver-se no extremo oposto
12:49
of everything it represents
314
754000
2000
de tudo aquilo que representa
12:51
in America
315
756000
2000
na América
12:53
when it is thrust upon those
316
758000
2000
quando é empurrada em cima daqueles
12:55
who are insufficiently prepared for it.
317
760000
3000
que estão insuficientemente preparados para ela.
12:58
But it is not only other people
318
763000
2000
Mas não são apenas outras pessoas
13:00
in other places
319
765000
2000
em outros lugares
13:02
that are feeling the pressure
320
767000
2000
que estão sentindo a pressão
13:04
of ever-increasing choice.
321
769000
2000
do crescimento contínuo da escolha.
13:06
Americans themselves are discovering
322
771000
2000
Americanos mesmos estão descobrindo
13:08
that unlimited choice
323
773000
2000
que escolha ilimitada
13:10
seems more attractive in theory
324
775000
2000
parece ser mais atraente na teoria
13:12
than in practice.
325
777000
2000
do que na prática.
13:14
We all have physical, mental
326
779000
3000
Nós todos temos limitações físicas,
13:17
and emotional (Laughter) limitations
327
782000
2000
mentais e emocionais
13:19
that make it impossible for us
328
784000
2000
que tornam impossível para nós
13:21
to process every single choice we encounter,
329
786000
3000
processar cada uma das escolhas que encontramos,
13:24
even in the grocery store,
330
789000
2000
até mesmo na mercearia,
13:26
let alone over the course of our entire lives.
331
791000
3000
no curso de toda nossa vida.
13:29
A number of my studies have shown
332
794000
3000
Certo número de meus estudos mostraram
13:32
that when you give people 10 or more options
333
797000
2000
que quando você dá para as pessoas 10 ou mais opções
13:34
when they're making a choice, they make poorer decisions,
334
799000
3000
quando estão fazendo uma escolha, elas tomam decisões pobres,
13:37
whether it be health care, investment,
335
802000
2000
seja em planos de saúde, investimentos,
13:39
other critical areas.
336
804000
2000
ou outras áreas críticas.
13:41
Yet still, many of us believe
337
806000
2000
Ainda assim, muitos de nós acreditam
13:43
that we should make all our own choices
338
808000
3000
que deveríamos fazer todas as nossas próprias escolhas
13:46
and seek out even more of them.
339
811000
3000
e procurar ainda mais delas.
13:49
This brings me to the third,
340
814000
3000
Isto me leva a terceira,
13:52
and perhaps most problematic, assumption:
341
817000
3000
e talvez a mais problemática suposição:
13:55
"You must never
342
820000
2000
"Você não deve nunca
13:57
say no to choice."
343
822000
3000
dizer não a uma escolha."
14:00
To examine this, let's go back to the U.S.
344
825000
2000
Para examinar isso vamos voltar aos E.U.A.
14:02
and then hop across the pond to France.
345
827000
3000
e então pular o lago em direção à França.
14:05
Right outside Chicago,
346
830000
3000
Em Chicago,
14:08
a young couple, Susan and Daniel Mitchell,
347
833000
2000
um jovem casal, Susan e Daniel Mitchell,
14:10
were about to have their first baby.
348
835000
3000
estavam prestes a ter seu primeiro bebê.
14:13
They'd already picked out a name for her,
349
838000
2000
Eles já até tinham escolhido um nome para ela,
14:15
Barbara, after her grandmother.
350
840000
3000
Barbara, em homenagem a sua avó.
14:18
One night, when Susan was seven months pregnant,
351
843000
3000
Uma noite, quando Susan estava com 7 meses de gravidez,
14:21
she started to experience contractions
352
846000
2000
ela começou a ter contrações
14:23
and was rushed to the emergency room.
353
848000
3000
e foi levada às pressas para a sala de emergência.
14:26
The baby was delivered through a C-section,
354
851000
3000
O bebê nasceu de cesariana,
14:29
but Barbara suffered cerebral anoxia,
355
854000
2000
mas Barbara sofreu anoxia cerebral,
14:31
a loss of oxygen to the brain.
356
856000
3000
perda de oxigênio no cérebro.
14:34
Unable to breathe on her own,
357
859000
2000
Incapaz de respirar sozinha,
14:36
she was put on a ventilator.
358
861000
2000
ela foi colocada em um respirador.
14:38
Two days later,
359
863000
2000
Dois dias depois,
14:40
the doctors gave the Mitchells
360
865000
2000
os médicos deram aos Mitchells
14:42
a choice:
361
867000
2000
uma escolha.
14:44
They could either remove Barbara
362
869000
2000
Eles poderiam ou remover Barbara
14:46
off the life support,
363
871000
2000
do respirador artificial,
14:48
in which case she would die within a matter of hours,
364
873000
3000
e neste caso ela morreria em algumas horas,
14:51
or they could keep her on life support,
365
876000
3000
ou eles poderiam mantê-la no respirador artificial,
14:54
in which case she might still die
366
879000
2000
e neste caso ela ainda morreria
14:56
within a matter of days.
367
881000
2000
em alguns dias.
14:58
If she survived, she would remain
368
883000
2000
Se ela sobrevivesse, ela ficaria
15:00
in a permanent vegetative state,
369
885000
3000
em estado vegetativo permanente,
15:03
never able to walk, talk
370
888000
3000
nunca poderia andar, falar
15:06
or interact with others.
371
891000
3000
ou interagir com os outros.
15:09
What do they do?
372
894000
2000
O que eles fizeram?
15:11
What do any parent do?
373
896000
3000
O que qualquer pai faria?
15:17
In a study I conducted
374
902000
2000
Em um estudo que conduzi
15:19
with Simona Botti and Kristina Orfali,
375
904000
2000
com Simona Botti e Kristina Orfali,
15:21
American and French parents
376
906000
2000
pais americanos e franceses
15:23
were interviewed.
377
908000
2000
foram entrevistados.
15:25
They had all suffered
378
910000
2000
Todos eles sofreram
15:27
the same tragedy.
379
912000
2000
a mesma tragédia.
15:29
In all cases, the life support was removed,
380
914000
3000
Em todos os casos o respirador artificial foi removido,
15:32
and the infants had died.
381
917000
2000
e as crianças morreram.
15:34
But there was a big difference.
382
919000
2000
Mas havia uma grande diferença.
15:36
In France, the doctors decided whether and when
383
921000
3000
Na França, os médicos decidiram como e quando
15:39
the life support would be removed,
384
924000
3000
o respirador artificial deveria ser removido,
15:42
while in the United States,
385
927000
2000
enquanto nos Estados Unidos,
15:44
the final decision rested with the parents.
386
929000
3000
a decisão final era dos pais.
15:48
We wondered:
387
933000
2000
Nós pensamos:
15:50
does this have an effect on how the parents
388
935000
2000
isto influencia na maneira como os pais
15:52
cope with the loss of their loved one?
389
937000
3000
lidam com a perda de seus amados filhos?
15:55
We found that it did.
390
940000
3000
E descobrimos que sim.
15:58
Even up to a year later,
391
943000
2000
Mesmo um ano depois,
16:00
American parents
392
945000
2000
os pais americanos
16:02
were more likely to express negative emotions,
393
947000
2000
tendiam a expressar mais emoções negativas,
16:04
as compared to their French counterparts.
394
949000
3000
quando comparados com os franceses.
16:07
French parents were more likely to say things like,
395
952000
3000
Os pais franceses estavam mais propensos a dizer coisas do tipo,
16:10
"Noah was here for so little time,
396
955000
3000
"Noah esteve conosco por tão pouco tempo,
16:13
but he taught us so much.
397
958000
2000
mas ele nos ensinou tanto.
16:15
He gave us a new perspective on life."
398
960000
3000
Ele nos deu uma nova perspectiva na vida."
16:19
American parents were more likely to say things like,
399
964000
3000
Os pais americanos tendiam mais a dizer coisas do tipo,
16:22
"What if? What if?"
400
967000
3000
"E se? E se?"
16:25
Another parent complained,
401
970000
2000
Outro pai reclamou,
16:27
"I feel as if they purposefully tortured me.
402
972000
3000
"Eu sinto como se eles propositadamente tivessem me torturado.
16:30
How did they get me to do that?"
403
975000
3000
Como eles me levaram a fazer isso?"
16:33
And another parent said,
404
978000
2000
Outro pai disse,
16:35
"I feel as if I've played a role
405
980000
2000
"Eu sinto como se eu tivesse tomado parte
16:37
in an execution."
406
982000
3000
em uma execução."
16:40
But when the American parents were asked
407
985000
2000
Mas quando os pais americanos eram perguntados
16:42
if they would rather have had
408
987000
2000
se eles teriam preferido que
16:44
the doctors make the decision,
409
989000
3000
os médicos tivessem tomado a decisão,
16:47
they all said, "No."
410
992000
2000
todos eles disseram "não".
16:49
They could not imagine
411
994000
2000
Eles não podiam imaginar
16:51
turning that choice over to another,
412
996000
2000
entregar esta escolha para outro,
16:53
even though having made that choice
413
998000
3000
ainda que ter feito essa escolha
16:56
made them feel trapped,
414
1001000
2000
os fez sentir encurralados,
16:58
guilty, angry.
415
1003000
2000
culpados, com raiva.
17:00
In a number of cases
416
1005000
2000
Em certos casos
17:02
they were even clinically depressed.
417
1007000
3000
eles estavam até clinicamente deprimidos.
17:05
These parents could not contemplate
418
1010000
2000
Esses pais não conseguiam contemplar a possibilidade
17:07
giving up the choice,
419
1012000
2000
de abrir mão da escolha,
17:09
because to do so would have gone contrary
420
1014000
2000
porque fazer isso iria contra
17:11
to everything they had been taught
421
1016000
3000
tudo aquilo que eles foram ensinados
17:14
and everything they had come to believe
422
1019000
2000
e tudo aquilo que eles passaram a acreditar
17:16
about the power
423
1021000
2000
sobre poder
17:18
and purpose of choice.
424
1023000
3000
e propósito da escolha.
17:21
In her essay, "The White Album,"
425
1026000
3000
Em seu ensaio, "O Album Branco",
17:24
Joan Didion writes,
426
1029000
3000
Joan Didion escreve,
17:27
"We tell ourselves stories
427
1032000
2000
"Contamos a nós mesmos histórias
17:29
in order to live.
428
1034000
2000
para conseguir viver.
17:31
We interpret what we see,
429
1036000
2000
Interpretamos o que vemos,
17:33
select the most workable
430
1038000
2000
selecionamos a mais viável
17:35
of the multiple choices.
431
1040000
2000
das múltiplas escolhas.
17:37
We live entirely by the imposition
432
1042000
2000
Vivemos inteiramente pela imposição
17:39
of a narrative line
433
1044000
2000
da linha narrativa
17:41
upon disparate images,
434
1046000
2000
sobre imagens disparatadas,
17:43
by the idea with which we have learned to freeze
435
1048000
3000
pela ideia com a qual aprendemos a congelar
17:46
the shifting phantasmagoria,
436
1051000
2000
a fantasmagoria mutante
17:48
which is our actual experience."
437
1053000
3000
que é a nossa real experiência."
17:53
The story Americans tell,
438
1058000
2000
A história que os americanos contam,
17:55
the story upon which
439
1060000
2000
a história sob a qual
17:57
the American dream depends,
440
1062000
2000
o sonho americano depende
17:59
is the story of limitless choice.
441
1064000
3000
é a história da escolha ilimitada.
18:02
This narrative
442
1067000
2000
Esta narrativa
18:04
promises so much:
443
1069000
2000
promete muito:
18:06
freedom, happiness,
444
1071000
2000
liberdade, felicidade,
18:08
success.
445
1073000
2000
sucesso.
18:10
It lays the world at your feet and says,
446
1075000
3000
Ela coloca o mundo a seus pés e diz,
18:13
"You can have anything, everything."
447
1078000
3000
"Você pode ter qualquer coisa, tudo".
18:17
It's a great story,
448
1082000
2000
É uma ótima história,
18:19
and it's understandable why they would be reluctant
449
1084000
2000
e é compreensível o por que deles serem relutantes
18:21
to revise it.
450
1086000
3000
em revisar isto.
18:24
But when you take a close look,
451
1089000
2000
Mas quando você olha de perto,
18:26
you start to see the holes,
452
1091000
2000
você começa a ver os buracos,
18:28
and you start to see that the story
453
1093000
2000
e você começa a ver que a história
18:30
can be told in many other ways.
454
1095000
3000
pode ser contada de muitas outras maneiras.
18:33
Americans have so often tried to
455
1098000
2000
Americanos tentam frequentemente
18:35
disseminate their ideas of choice,
456
1100000
3000
disseminar suas ideias sobre escolha,
18:38
believing that they will be, or ought to be,
457
1103000
3000
acreditando que serão, ou têm que ser,
18:41
welcomed with open hearts and minds.
458
1106000
3000
saudadas com coração e mente abertos.
18:44
But the history books and the daily news tell us
459
1109000
3000
Mas os livros de história e as notícias diárias nos dizem
18:47
it doesn't always work out that way.
460
1112000
3000
que nem sempre funciona desta forma.
18:50
The phantasmagoria,
461
1115000
2000
A fantasmagoria,
18:52
the actual experience that we try to understand
462
1117000
2000
a real experiência que tentamos entender
18:54
and organize through narrative,
463
1119000
3000
e organizar através da narrativa,
18:57
varies from place to place.
464
1122000
3000
varia de lugar para lugar.
19:00
No single narrative serves the needs
465
1125000
2000
Nenhuma narrativa sozinha atende a necessidade
19:02
of everyone everywhere.
466
1127000
3000
de todos em todo lugar.
19:06
Moreover, Americans themselves
467
1131000
3000
Além disso, americanos mesmos
19:09
could benefit from incorporating
468
1134000
3000
podem se beneficiar incorporando
19:12
new perspectives into their own narrative,
469
1137000
3000
novas perspectivas em suas próprias narrativas,
19:15
which has been driving their choices
470
1140000
2000
que tem guiado suas escolhas
19:17
for so long.
471
1142000
3000
por tanto tempo.
19:20
Robert Frost once said that,
472
1145000
3000
Robert Frost uma vez disse,
19:23
"It is poetry that is lost in translation."
473
1148000
3000
"É a poesia que se perde na tradução".
19:27
This suggests that
474
1152000
2000
Isto sugere que
19:29
whatever is beautiful and moving,
475
1154000
2000
o que quer que seja belo e tocante,
19:31
whatever gives us a new way to see,
476
1156000
3000
o que quer que nos dê uma nova forma de ver,
19:34
cannot be communicated to those
477
1159000
2000
não pode ser comunicado àqueles
19:36
who speak a different language.
478
1161000
3000
que falam uma língua diferente.
19:39
But Joseph Brodsky said that,
479
1164000
2000
Mas Joseph Brodsky disse que,
19:41
"It is poetry
480
1166000
2000
"É a poesia
19:43
that is gained in translation,"
481
1168000
2000
que se ganha na tradução",
19:45
suggesting that translation
482
1170000
2000
sugerindo que esta tradução
19:47
can be a creative,
483
1172000
2000
pode ser criativo,
19:49
transformative act.
484
1174000
3000
um ato transformador.
19:52
When it comes to choice,
485
1177000
2000
Quando se trata de escolha,
19:54
we have far more to gain than to lose
486
1179000
3000
temos muito mais a ganhar que a perder
19:57
by engaging in the many
487
1182000
3000
nos envolvendo nas muitas
20:00
translations of the narratives.
488
1185000
3000
traduções das narrativas.
20:03
Instead of replacing
489
1188000
2000
Ao invés de substituir
20:05
one story with another,
490
1190000
2000
uma história pela outra,
20:07
we can learn from and revel in
491
1192000
2000
podemos aprender com e celebrar
20:09
the many versions that exist
492
1194000
3000
as muitas versões que existem
20:12
and the many that have yet to be written.
493
1197000
3000
e as muitas que ainda podem vir a serem escritas.
20:15
No matter where we're from
494
1200000
3000
Não importa de onde somos
20:18
and what your narrative is,
495
1203000
2000
e qual é sua narrativa,
20:20
we all have a responsibility
496
1205000
2000
todos temos a responsabilidade
20:22
to open ourselves up to a wider array
497
1207000
2000
de nos abrir para uma gama mais ampla
20:24
of what choice can do,
498
1209000
3000
do que a escolha pode fazer,
20:27
and what it can represent.
499
1212000
3000
e o que ela pode representar.
20:30
And this does not lead to
500
1215000
2000
E isto não leva a
20:32
a paralyzing moral relativism.
501
1217000
3000
um relativismo moral paralisante.
20:35
Rather, it teaches us when
502
1220000
2000
Ao invés, isto nos mostra quando
20:37
and how to act.
503
1222000
2000
e como agir.
20:39
It brings us that much closer
504
1224000
2000
Isto nos torna mais próximos
20:41
to realizing the full potential of choice,
505
1226000
3000
de perceber todo o potencial da escolha,
20:44
to inspiring the hope
506
1229000
2000
para inspirar a esperança
20:46
and achieving the freedom
507
1231000
2000
e atingir a liberdade
20:48
that choice promises
508
1233000
2000
que a escolha promete
20:50
but doesn't always deliver.
509
1235000
2000
mas nem sempre cumpre.
20:52
If we learn to speak to one another,
510
1237000
3000
Se aprendermos a falar uns com os outros,
20:55
albeit through translation,
511
1240000
3000
ainda que através da tradução,
20:58
then we can begin to see choice
512
1243000
2000
então nós poderemos ver a escolha
21:00
in all its strangeness,
513
1245000
2000
em toda a sua estranheza,
21:02
complexity
514
1247000
3000
complexidade
21:05
and compelling beauty.
515
1250000
2000
e fascinante beleza.
21:07
Thank you.
516
1252000
2000
Obrigada.
21:09
(Applause)
517
1254000
11000
(Aplausos)
21:20
Bruno Giussani: Thank you.
518
1265000
3000
Bruno Giussani: Obrigado.
21:23
Sheena, there is a detail about your biography
519
1268000
3000
Sheena, existe um detalhe sobre a sua biografia
21:26
that we have not written in the program book.
520
1271000
2000
que nós não escrevemos na programação.
21:28
But by now it's evident to everyone in this room. You're blind.
521
1273000
3000
Mas que agora é evidente a todos nesta sala. Você é cega.
21:31
And I guess one of the questions on everybody's mind is:
522
1276000
3000
E acredito que uma das questões na mente de todos seja:
21:34
How does that influence your study of choosing
523
1279000
3000
Como isto influencia seu estudo sobre escolha,
21:37
because that's an activity
524
1282000
2000
porque esta é uma atividade
21:39
that for most people is associated with visual inputs
525
1284000
3000
que para a maioria das pessoas é associada com estímulos visuais
21:42
like aesthetics and color and so on?
526
1287000
3000
como estética e cor e assim vai?
21:46
Sheena Iyengar: Well, it's funny that you should ask that
527
1291000
2000
Sheena Iyengar: Bem, é engraçado você perguntar isto,
21:48
because one of the things that's interesting about being blind
528
1293000
3000
porque uma das coisas que é interessante em ser cega
21:51
is you actually get a different vantage point
529
1296000
2000
é que você de fato tem um ponto de vantagem
21:53
when you observe the way
530
1298000
2000
quando observa a forma
21:55
sighted people make choices.
531
1300000
2000
como pessoas com visão fazem escolhas.
21:57
And as you just mentioned, there's lots of choices out there
532
1302000
2000
E como você mesmo mencionou, existem muitas opções por aí
21:59
that are very visual these days.
533
1304000
2000
que são bem visuais hoje em dia.
22:01
Yeah, I -- as you would expect --
534
1306000
2000
Sim, eu -- como vocês esperariam --
22:03
get pretty frustrated by choices
535
1308000
2000
fico muito frustrada por escolhas
22:05
like what nail polish to put on
536
1310000
2000
como qual esmalte usar,
22:07
because I have to rely on what other people suggest.
537
1312000
2000
porque preciso confiar no que outra pessoa sugere.
22:09
And I can't decide.
538
1314000
2000
E eu não posso decidir.
22:11
And so one time I was in a beauty salon,
539
1316000
2000
E certa vez eu estava em um salão de beleza,
22:13
and I was trying to decide between two very light shades of pink.
540
1318000
3000
e eu estava tentando decidir entre duas leves tonalidades de rosa.
22:16
And one was called "Ballet Slippers."
541
1321000
2000
E uma se chamava "Sapatilhas de Ballet".
22:18
And the other one was called "Adorable."
542
1323000
3000
E a outra era "Adorável".
22:21
(Laughter)
543
1326000
2000
(Risadas)
22:23
And so I asked these two ladies,
544
1328000
2000
Então perguntei a duas senhoras.
22:25
and the one lady told me, "Well, you should definitely wear 'Ballet Slippers.'"
545
1330000
2000
E uma senhora me disse, "Bem, você deve definitivamente usar 'Sapatilhas de Ballet'".
22:27
"Well, what does it look like?"
546
1332000
2000
"Bem, e como ele se parece?"
22:29
"Well, it's a very elegant shade of pink."
547
1334000
2000
"Bem, é um tom bem elegante de rosa".
22:31
"Okay, great."
548
1336000
2000
"Ok, ótimo"
22:33
The other lady tells me to wear "Adorable."
549
1338000
2000
A outra senhora me disse para usar "Adorável".
22:35
"What does it look like?"
550
1340000
2000
"Como se parece?"
22:37
"It's a glamorous shade of pink."
551
1342000
3000
"É um glamouroso tom de rosa."
22:41
And so I asked them, "Well, how do I tell them apart?
552
1346000
2000
E então perguntei a elas, "Bem, como eu as diferencio?
22:43
What's different about them?"
553
1348000
2000
O que existe de diferente entre eles?"
22:45
And they said, "Well, one is elegant, the other one's glamorous."
554
1350000
2000
E elas disseram, "Bem, um é elegante e o outro é glamouroso".
22:47
Okay, we got that.
555
1352000
2000
Ok, entendemos isso.
22:49
And the only thing they had consensus on:
556
1354000
2000
E a única coisa que elas chegaram a um consenso foi:
22:51
well, if I could see them, I would
557
1356000
2000
bem, se eu pudesse vê-las, eu poderia
22:53
clearly be able to tell them apart.
558
1358000
2000
claramente ser capaz de diferenciá-las.
22:55
(Laughter)
559
1360000
2000
(Risadas)
22:57
And what I wondered was whether they were being affected
560
1362000
3000
E então o que imaginei foi que elas estavam sendo afetadas
23:00
by the name or the content of the color,
561
1365000
2000
pelo nome ou pelo conteúdo da cor.
23:02
so I decided to do a little experiment.
562
1367000
3000
Então decidi fazer um pequeno experimento.
23:05
So I brought these two bottles of nail polish into the laboratory,
563
1370000
3000
Trouxe os dois frascos de esmalte para o laboratório,
23:08
and I stripped the labels off.
564
1373000
2000
e arranquei seus rótulos.
23:10
And I brought women into the laboratory,
565
1375000
2000
E eu trouxe mulheres ao laboratório,
23:12
and I asked them, "Which one would you pick?"
566
1377000
2000
e perguntei a elas, "Qual você escolheria?"
23:14
50 percent of the women accused me of playing a trick,
567
1379000
3000
50 percento das mulheres me acusou de estar pregando uma peça,
23:17
of putting the same color nail polish
568
1382000
2000
ao colocar a mesma cor de esmalte
23:19
in both those bottles.
569
1384000
2000
em ambos os frascos.
23:21
(Laughter)
570
1386000
2000
(Risadas)
23:23
(Applause)
571
1388000
4000
(Aplausos)
23:27
At which point you start to wonder who the trick's really played on.
572
1392000
3000
Ponto em que você começa a pensar em quem a peça realmente foi pregada.
23:30
Now, of the women that could tell them apart,
573
1395000
3000
Das mulheres que puderam diferenciá-los,
23:33
when the labels were off, they picked "Adorable,"
574
1398000
3000
quado os rótulos foram arrancados, escolheram "Adorável",
23:36
and when the labels were on,
575
1401000
2000
e quando os rótulos estavam presentes
23:38
they picked "Ballet Slippers."
576
1403000
3000
elas escolheram "Sapatilhas de Ballet".
23:41
So as far as I can tell,
577
1406000
2000
Então até onde posso dizer,
23:43
a rose by any other name
578
1408000
2000
uma rosa com qualquer outro nome
23:45
probably does look different
579
1410000
2000
provavelmente parece diferente
23:47
and maybe even smells different.
580
1412000
3000
e pode até cheirar diferente.
23:50
BG: Thank you. Sheena Iyengar. Thank you Sheena.
581
1415000
3000
BG: Obrigado. Sheena Iyengar. Obrigado Sheena.
23:53
(Applause)
582
1418000
8000
(Aplausos)
